Boat Review: Viking 61

  • By By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: October 12, 2001

Viking has just wedged a 61-footer between its 58 and 65. It’s hard to believe that you’d find a significant difference between boats with just three or four feet defining them. But owners and captains alike agree that the 65 and the 61 sit on opposite sides of the big-boat/mid-size line. The 61’s cored fiberglass bottom enjoys some minor refinements, such as different chine angles and a deeper, finer entry. The bow has also been raked more severely. I found that these refinements conspired to make a drier ride on every point of sail, but especially in a head sea. The changes also carry over into the 61’s styling, where Viking continues to replace sharp corners with soft, radius turns.

Performance Despite a wide separation between the helm and companion seats and the aft flybridge rail, the helmsman’s view aft remains unobstructed. However, on such big boats, the distance to the forward end of the bridge is enough that no matter your height, you’ll appreciate the centerline cutout filled with Lucite allowing you to see the foredeck and bow. As with all recent-vintage Vikings, the steering responds instantly at speed for small course changes while a 180-degree turn takes about eight boat lengths. Surprisingly, the 1,480-horsepower DDC/MTU 2000 engines pushing the 61 represent a full 500 fewer horses each than the engines typically used in the 65. The lower horsepower didn’t hamper performance in the least. On the way back from the canyons on our day of fishing, I assure you that the 61 passed everyone – even the outboard-powered boats. Top speed according to two GPS units proved an impressive 38 knots. Cooking along at a 30-knot cruising speed still seemed very comfortable.

Fishability Unfortunately, my fishing luck held true for our 100-plus-mile trip out to the canyons off Ocean City, Maryland. We didn’t see a fish the entire day. Of course, the day after I left, the Viking 61 fished the Ocean City White Marlin Open and caught a blue marlin over 700 pounds to win the event. What I discovered working the cockpit was that I couldn’t tell the difference between the cockpits of the 61 and the 65. Both have more than enough room for a half-dozen anglers and crew to work without getting into each other’s way. In typical Viking fashion, the 61’s cockpit could be described as sterile. No coolers are needed and no pipes, latches, mops, shoreline cables or gaffs remain in view. Viking even makes use of the step up to the salon, turning it into a refrigerated drink box.

Viking has also incorporated its signature tapered salon cabin sides in the 61. This channels air down the side of the cabin into the cockpit, eliminating any “station wagon” effect from the exhaust and reducing the salt buildup on the salon’s cockpit window at the end of the day. At a 3- to 4-knot trolling speed (5 gph total), the wake features virtually no wash. At 8 knots, the prop wash becomes visible to the first wave, but still without chine turbulence.

In simulating the maneuvers involved in fighting fish, I found the 61 responsive and nimble. Anyone who believes boats over 40 feet long can’t fish worth a darn needs to revisit their theories on some of these new large boats. They can keep up with the wildest of fish surprisingly well. Viking handles passenger safety better than many by covering the entire foredeck with nonskid. Whoever goes to the bow to anchor or handle dock lines will greatly appreciate it. And there are better than average handholds throughout, but I’d still like to see more overhead handholds wherever a wide-open space exists without furniture or counters to brace against. I’d also like to see the bow rail extend farther aft to meet the cabin sides. As you can see from the running shot, there’s a long space where you’d be on your hands and knees if you had to go forward in a heaving sea.

Flybridge Once you stock the pantry on the flybridge, you’ll never have to leave. A full wet bar, refrigerated drink box and tons of dry storage will keep food and drink handy at all times. I also like the ergonomics of the helm. A three- or four-hour trip goes by fairly quickly when you can see and reach all your electronics and controls comfortably from the helm seat. The flybridge on the earliest hull sported a concession to styling that I found unsettling. While the prototype’s ladder from the cockpit provided an excellent angle and very secure handholds, once you reached the top, you faced a large hole between the down-curving end of the flybridge coaming and the tower leg.

Interior The Viking 61 comes in your choice of a three- or four-cabin layout: With three cabins, you’ll find the master stateroom to port with a queen-size berth. Opposite is an over/under bunk cabin with head. Finally, the forecastle has a low double berth to port and a higher single bunk to starboard, both along the curve of the hull. Each cabin has its own private head.

The four-cabin configuration features two fore-and-aft doubles in the bow to port, each with a private head, and two over/under cabins that share a head to starboard.

If you consider yourself a classic yachtsman, you’ll love the Viking 61’s interior. Teak varnished to a high gloss simply cannot be beat in my book. We managed to comfortably sleep five on the deeply carpeted floor and the great three-sided settee.

The galley resembles the cockpit with its stark cleanliness and lack of clutter. I particularly like the strategically hidden drawers containing the refrigerators and freezers. A recessed three-burner electric stove in the counter handles saute and poaching, while a microwave/convection oven handles roasts. Then the dishwasher takes care of the empties. All galley cabinets have sliding shelving or drawers that pull out for much easier access.

Engine Room The 61’s engine room doesn’t offer quite the standing headroom its big sister 65 does. However, getting in and out remains easy and everything you need to reach for both regular maintenance or emergency management has been placed close at hand. A pump room acts as a noise damper between the master stateroom and the engine compartment, and every surface of the engine space has been finished in gloss white for good looks and easy maintenance.

Used Viking 61 Convertible For Sale

Used Viking 61 Convertible For Sale

The Viking 61 Convertible introduced in 2001 represents decades of Viking’s state-of-the-art engineering, performance, and luxury. Like other Viking Convertibles of the new millennium, the 61C is built on the tremendous success of the Viking 55 Convertible (1998-2003). The 61C’s hull is fully cored, as are the Viking 65 and 72 Convertibles that preceded her. Though the 61 Convertible shares a resemblance to and features of other Viking Convertibles , she is her own boat. Designed with a deeper, sharper entry, and refined chine angles, the 61C offers a dryer ride and better head sea performance. Propeller pockets were introduced in 2003 to reduce the draft. The 61C’s styling continues the trend to rounded edges and curves for a powerful, sleek look. Low slung deck house and bridge, and long gently curving sheerline amplify the beautiful lines and agile look of the 61 Convertible.

DESCRIPTION

Viking’s outstanding engineering is especially evident in the meticulous, gleaming white engine room with standing headroom and space to maintain and service all of the well-arranged mechanical equipment and auxiliary systems. The air-conditioning compressors are in a separate pump room forward of engines which acts as a sound buffer between the engine room and master stateroom. Engines are mounted on steel I-beams set in special bulkheads to evenly distribute weight (center of gravity) and minimize vibration and sound transmission throughout the vessel’s living areas. The engine room is accessed via centerline section of forward cockpit console.

The 170 sq ft cockpit is arranged for tournament fishing with a full array of gear and amenities that are neatly stowed in compartments in deck or built into the cockpit’s molded-in console along the main cabin bulkhead. The console with preparation center, tackle storage (starboard side), bait freezer, and refrigerated step box, was standard until 2005 when the optional raised observation mezzanine became standard for the 61C. Other cockpit amenities include flush mounted rod holders, a large insulated in-deck fishbox, two storage boxes with the option to convert one into a livewell, walk-through transom door with lift gate, and Glendinning Cablemaster connections, gaff storage, and washdown connections hidden under gunwale. Nothing is laying around to clutter or obstruct in the “business end” of the boat. A built-in mounting plate in cockpit sole could support an optional pedestal mounted full-size fighting chair, rocket launcher rod holder array, or table. Owners could customize the cockpit to their liking, making the Viking 61 Convertible a semi-custom sportfishing yacht.

The 61C’s open flybridge with hardtop is accessed via a sturdy aluminum athwartship bridge ladder from cockpit mezzanine. Viking also offered an enclosed bridge version of the 61 Convertible with an optional spiral stairway to the salon below. The open flybridge features a huge peninsula style bridge console extending from portside with starboard walkaround to the forward and starboard guest seating. The helm console could easily accommodate an array of electronics displays, instruments and storage. Display screens are protected from the elements under clear acrylic covers. Viking offered an optional Palm Beach style helm pod control station with single lever controls flanked by top-opening compartments with electrical switches and other electronics. Viking added a plexiglass notch in the flybridge front for greater foredeck visibility from helm. Visibility all around is excellent. An optional Isinglass enclosure offered weather protection on the open bridge. The console features a large built-in chill box and could accommodate an optional top loading freezer for convenient access to refreshments (or bait storage) on the bridge. Wraparound guest seating is forward and portside of helm console and a long bench seat is on starboard side—both have storage underneath. Owners could have a custom tower installed, along with compartments under the hardtop for additional electronics and electric teaser reels.

The Viking 61 Convertible offers the versatility of a luxurious, comfortable family cruising yacht as well as a competitive tournament fishing boat. The Viking Yacht interiors are well known for beautiful high gloss (or satin) finished hand laid teak or walnut joinery and designer décor and furnishings that are elegantly traditional. The main cabin with open salon, galley, and dinette is accessed by an electronic sliding door from cockpit steps. The standard arrangement features a U-shaped sectional couch with cocktail table to port. There is storage beneath the seat sections for extra rods and gear. Some customized versions of the 61C feature an L-shaped couch to allow two bar stools at an overhang on the end of the galley’s peninsula counter. Directly across from the couch is the built-in credenza with entertainment system and storage. The dinette is forward on starboard side, flowing seamlessly from the credenza. The flatscreen TV is mounted on the bulkhead above the dinette for easy viewing throughout the salon. U-shaped open galley is across on portside. Undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawer units and concealed appliances create an uncluttered, open ambiance unifying the main salon area.

The standard accommodations plan is a 3-stateroom, 3-head arrangement with an athwartship queen berth in portside master stateroom and ensuite head. Forward guest stateroom has over/under berths with double lower on portside and single upper on starboard. An optional centerline queen berth was available. The third stateroom features upper and lower bunks. Each has an ensuite head with shower stall and plenty of storage in cabinets and hanging lockers. The optional 4-stateroom plan has a fore and aft queen berth in master and two port staterooms with upper/lower bunks that share the guest/day head. A laundry center with stacked washer and dryer is on starboard side at bottom of companionway stairs.

Viking’s superb quality of build and style is reflected in the creative use of space and materials and attention to detail from bow to stern. Everything needed for an extended cruise to the islands or distant fishing spot is provided.

The Viking 61 Convertible length overall (LOA) is 61’9” and 65’11” with pulpit. The beam is 18’2” and draft is 5’4” (4’10” after 2003 when prop pockets were introduced). Displacement weight is about 82,000 lbs and deadrise at transom is 15.5 degrees. Fuel capacity is 1,700 gallons or an optional 1,843 gallons, water capacity is 316 gallons.

Standard power was twin 1,360 hp diesels. Power options included diesels up to 2,000 hp each; the Detroit Diesel DDC/MTU Series 2000-V12 turbodiesel engines were popular.

If you consider yourself a classic yachtsman, your family will love the Viking 61's interior. Teak varnished to a high gloss simply cannot be beat. As you enter through the cockpit automatic door you are welcomed by theu00a0spacious main saloon that features a C-shaped sofa in the aft port corner that will seat six to eight people in great comfort around a hilo table, a U-shaped galley to port forward, a dinette for four people to starboard (directly opposite the galley for ease of serving meals), and a stunning sweep of low lockers in the starboard aft corner.

The galley has multiple Sub-Zero refrigerators and freezers under granite countertops. Thereu2019s still loads of stowage left over below, some of which may be given over to Miele dishwasers, trash compactors, and stoves. Deep under-mount stainless steel sinks, perfect for stashing coffeemakers in a seaway or soaking a bouillabaisse pot after dinner, are standard, as is a microwave/convection oven and an electric range. Overhead lockers on the forward bulkhead are abundant.

Belowdecks, the 61's biggest gains in the master stateroom. It has a king-size berth and a cross-bulkhead hanging locker that's thoughtfully positioned to shield sound from the machinery space. The standard three stateroom/three head arrangement is the preferred choice.u00a0

While the 61's styling and exterior are groomed to tournament standards, her interior layout is generous compared with many custom offerings. This is in part because of the volume afforded by her 18-foot, 2-inch beam and her moderate forward sections. This is typical for Viking, whose design approach favors interior accommodations and respectable head-sea performance.

As is typical from Viking, the 61's engines are mounted on steel I-beams that span the engineroom and are fastened to the bulkheads, in an effort to transmit engine weight and thrust more evenly to the hull. Fiberglass tanks, molded separately from the hull, carry a total of 2,100 gallons of fuel.

Standing headroom in the 61's engineroom is a delight. Sea chests and auxiliary systems are segregated in an adjacent machinery compartment forward. To reduce clutter, bulky internal seawater strainers are replaced with wedge-style external strainers. Also, plenty of AC power from the upgraded twin ONAN generators.

There's a clear view of the cockpit from the tournament-style helm control pod, and a clever notched windscreen design improves visibility across the foredeck. Side-mounted, single-lever controls and power-assisted hydraulic steering deliver pinpoint accuracy to make charging through an inlet or backing down on a blue marlin a snap. Electronics are built into the curved console and protected by hinged, acrylic doors. Fore and aft bench seating is to starboard, and an L-shape settee is forward of the helm-both with space beneath for rod stowage. The bridge console also includes a built-in chill box and accommodates an optional top-loading freezer. A new hidden mounting system (no exposed screws) for sub-moldings, such as the console, enhances the bridge's clean appearance.

Her molded fiberglass hull is laminated with a blend of knitted multidirectional reinforcement, polyester resin and a modified epoxy skin coat. Balsa coring is hand applied in the topsides and vacuum-bagged in the bottom. Viking has had success coring the bottoms of its 65-foot and 72-foot convertibles and believes the weight savings found and stiffness gained are necessary for performance. Coring is substituted for additional reinforcement in way of the through-hulls, and at the keel and chines. The hull is supported with cored fiberglass bulkheads and a network of fiberglass stringers. The superstructure and deckhouse are molded in one piece, and coring stiffens the decks and house sides.

61' Viking 2005

Used Viking 61 Convertible Yacht For Sale

viking 61 convertible yacht for sale

ABOUT THE 61 Convertible

The Viking 61C is a 61-foot convertible sportfishing yacht with an open flybridge that was produced by New Jersey-based Viking Yachts between 1999 and 2009. This was the most popular large convertible yacht ever built, not just by Viking, but by any yacht-building firm, with over 150 of these models sold across a decade of production. The 61C is just as popular as ever on today’s used and charter markets thanks to its sharp and lean looks, high-caliber fishing prowess, sportscar-like handling and luxury accommodation. This iconic yacht has landed many a prize catch down the years and has proved its worth by winning such competitions as the 2015 Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Displacement 82,000 lbs.
  • Engine Manufacturer MTU
  • Fuel Capacity 1,800 gallons

Like other Viking sportfishing models , the 61C can come fitted with a custom tuna tower installed by either Pipewelders or Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers for a turnkey-ready vessel with elevated piloting. Should you forego a tower then the next best option is open-air piloting from the flybridge, where you will find a pair of leather-clad helm chairs facing a molded fiberglass helm station to port. The dashboard has been installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics and features equipment such as Furuno monitors and Simrad autopilot, while you will also find bow thrusters and a power-assisted steering wheel fixed to a teak helm pod here. The flybridge also hosts a side-sofa to starboard, an R-shaped forward sofa with views out across the bow, and a full wet-bar set-up with an icemaker.

The 61C’s 170-square foot aft-cockpit was something of a revelation when this boat first launched and is still one of the finest fish-catching spaces you will ever encounter. There is a transom door with a lift gate, a live-well, a pair of Glendinning Cablemasters, flush rod holders, fresh and raw-water hoses and fish boxes out here, as well as a bulkhead bait-prep console with a freezer, a tackle center, a drinks chiller and a sink. The cockpit also hosts a floor plate for the installation of a fighting chair or rocket launcher, for those who have their eyes set on bagging prize-winning marlin.

A Stanley electric door leads from cockpit to salon, where you will find high-gloss or satin-finished teak surrounds, plush carpeting, leather furnishings and panoramic windows providing a sedate and refined atmosphere quite a world away from the salt-water and scales of tournament fishing. To port there is a U-shaped sofa surrounding a coffee table, while to starboard there is curved cabinetry and space for an HD TV. Moving further inside you will find a walk-in galley with Corian counters, Amtico flooring, a three-zone hob, a combination oven and under-counter fridge-freezer units, sitting across from a U-shaped dining sofa and a Hi-Lo table. Below deck there is room for up to 8 overnight guests across an en-suite bunk berth, an en-suite double stateroom to the bow and a further bunk room that is ideal for children. The showstopper down here, however, is the owner’s stateroom to port, where you will find a queen-sized island bed with bedside cabinets, maple-lined hanging closets and a large bathroom with a shower stall.

High-performance is central to the Viking 61C’s decades-long success on the tournament circuit, and lucky owners of this yacht can expect top speeds of up to 38 knots and cruising speeds of 30 knots thanks to twin MTU 16V 2000 diesels or a pair of CAT C32 1675MHP engines. This yacht’s proprietary cored-fiberglass hull with a fine entry and a severely raked bow offers a dry and balanced ride in open water conditions, while a fuel tank holding up to 2000 gallons of diesel will keep you out at sea for days on end in search of the elusive bluefin tuna.

Sport Cruisers: Viking 61 Flybridge Yacht

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

In the mid-1990s, when Viking Yachts announced it intended to brand a British import for U.S. distribution, the industry took notice. I was one of the first aboard a Sport Cruisers product and was impressed with the boat, a curious blend of European styling, convertible-like performance and conservative British engineering.

The Sport Cruisers line now includes more than a dozen models from 40 to 84 feet LOA. The new 61 Flybridge Yacht is designed to fill a void in the line between 56 and 65 feet. She replaces the 60 Flybridge , one of the company’s most popular models, with an updated silhouette, a sleek, sweptback style, a reverse transom and a low-slung arch. Her superstructure’s soft-molded shapes are accented with polished stainless-steel hardware and a teak-covered swim platform and afterdeck. A major attraction is her exterior deck space.

“At least 50 percent of our customers are migrating from express cruisers”, said Charlie Underwood, vice president of operations at Viking Sport Cruisers.

Our sea trial in sloppy 3- to 5-foot seas off Ft. Lauderdale proved the 61 Flybridge Yacht offers the kind of dry, comfortable ride cruising yachtsmen expect, particularly in the climate-controlled comfort of her interior helm station. In a 15-knot breeze, she delivered a top speed of 28.7 knots at 2250 rpm. At cruise, 2100 rpm yielded a speed of 25.5 knots, and she was responsive. The saloon measured a quiet 74 decibels.

Sport Cruisers are a product of Viking Yachts’ joint venture with Princess Yachts International of Plymouth, England.

“Viking’s expertise is primarily in the design and construction of convertibles”, Underwood said. “We sought out a European partner with similar strengths in performance cruising yachts.”

The 61’s flying bridge is essentially fashioned after the cockpit of a large express cruiser. Accessed from inside or out, the molded-in exterior steps are an improvement compared with the 60’s ladder. Helm and companion seating face a business-like control station, and an adjacent curved bench seat with a bolster is a likely spot for the captain’s mate. The afterdeck has a standard isinglass enclosure. I would add a bimini on the flying bridge.

Viking specifies a mast extension that improves the radar scanner’s line of sight and raises it above the skipper’s head. Provisions for mounting a satellite dome are a $3,275 option. A 12-foot tender can be carried on the transom platform, and an optional 770-pound davit is cleverly concealed in the transom.

Bulwarks forward make prowling the foredeck comfortable. European touches, including the aft warping windlasses, are worthwhile for cruising couples. While the hearty plow anchor has 131 feet of chain, I would get the additional 197 feet.

The 61 Flybridge Yacht’s arrangement is similar in layout and design to that of other sport cruisers in the line. Our test boat had well-executed, high-gloss cherry joinery with laminated maple trim. Several upgrade packages and custom décors are available.

The saloon has a built-in seating area with a cocktail table and a built-in entertainment area with a 24-inch television and DVD player. The galley is outfitted with a cooktop, a refrigerator, a freezer, a microwave-convection oven and a dishwasher. Custom cabinets accommodate the custom tableware. A teak-and-holly sole, and Avonite counters, complete the upscale feel.

A small utility room with washer/dryer is accessible from the galley. The dinette, opposite the helm, is useful for dining or lounging and has two stools that may be stowed under the forward berth when not in use.

Belowdecks, a midship master stateroom and a forward VIP have queen-size island berths and private heads with separate showers. A third stateroom has a twin berth and private access to a third head.

While Viking and Princess sport cruisers of similar size and complication, the companies’ approaches differ. Viking uses the production line format favored by American builders. Each boat evolves as it passes through specialized assembly stations. Princess uses a system common in Europe in which boats are essentially built in place by production teams.

The 61’s hull is built of handlaid fiberglass. The bottom and a network of fiberglass stringers and web frames support the sides. Structural bulkheads are bonded and mechanically fastened to the hull and superstructure, and fiberglass liners define the interior . Closed-cell foam coring is used in the superstructure and decks. The superstructure is built with fairly complicated tooling. Fit and finish are of the highest U.S. standards.

She has a fairly conventional, hard-chine planing form with a moderate entry and a relatively deep 20-degree transom deadrise. Shallow propeller pockets reduce shaft angle and draft to 4 feet, 4 inches, an advantage for those intending to cruise the Bahamas. At low speed, her bow thruster makes slipping in and out of the marina almost foolproof.

Her 800 hp MANs seem an ideal match and are accessible from a hatch in the afterdeck. As is typical of European designs for sport cruisers, space around the engines is limited, but access to service items is reasonably good. There are engine removal hatches in the saloon sole, as well as a soft patch in the sole of the flying bridge. Should major engine work be required, this forethought will be appreciated.

Additional machinery space abaft the engine compartment accommodates an Onan 21.5kW generator in a sound shield. A small machinery space beneath the galley houses Cruisair air conditioning. Ship’s power is the 60-cycle service common on U.S. shores, and our test boat had two Glendinning Cablemaster systems and two isolation transformers.

Systems design follows the recommendations of the American Boat and Yacht Council, the same guidelines Viking follows in its production of sport cruisers. Viking specifies mostly American-made components and stocks a few harder-to-find items at its New Jersey facility.

“Our goal is to eliminate any inconvenience related to the ownership of a foreign product”, Underwood said. “To achieve this, prompt customer service is critical.”

If you are teased by European styling but have never thought of venturing beyond American brands, the 61 should be on your short list.
