No compromise for the 55m M/Y Shinkai, Philippe Briand explains why

yacht shinkai owner name

The new 55m yacht Shinkai  is the eighth superyacht to be launched by Philippe Briand’s Vitruvius Yachts and the second designed for this owner. Shinkai was recently transferred from Feadship’s construction hallway in Aalsmeer to the builder’s outside dock for final outfitting ahead of her sea trials. As to the construction and co-naval architecture, these were carried out by Feadship De Vries, while Daniela Boutsen provided her interior design. Together, the eminent group has pushed the boundaries of what might be considered both a superyacht and an explorer at the same time. And herein lay the challenge for Briand and his team.

“This is a special project for us, as Shinkai is the second yacht that we have designed for her owner. In fact, he was the first yachtsman to embrace the benefits of Vitruvius’s efficient hulls,” says Philippe Briand. The result is a 55m, 974GT motor yacht demonstrating the following characteristics: high-tech, comfort, explorer layout, aesthetic, sustainability.

yacht shinkai owner name

Adventurous Shinkai can reach the most remote places on the planet. She is ice-classed and stabilized by a vast mono gyroscope, which has never been specified on a yacht of this scale before. The 23-tonne gyroscope is particularly important for operations of the submersible, which needs a perfectly stable launching platform. It is also beneficial when navigating through waters at high latitudes, replacing conventional fin stabilisers which are at risk of being damaged by ice and flotsam, and are inefficient at low speeds.

yacht shinkai owner name

A departure from the characteristic low-profile aesthetic of Vitruvius Yachts, Shinkai spans four decks plus an observatory setting, in order that the spaces inside meet the detailed requirements of the very experienced client. The owner’s cabin is positioned forward in the superstructure, with an exceptional area of 73sqm and a 135-degree view through full-height reinforced windows. There are four further guest suites, while seven cabins for 12 crew complete the accommodations.

Shinkai carries a wide variety serious toys, such as her 7,400kg U-Boat Worx submersible for three passengers. “I imagine it would have made Jean Jacques Cousteau jealous of such bright possibility to explore underwater!” adds Briand. The yacht’s design includes an extended aft deck to support the toys that make for a truly adventurous expedition, including 4×4 land vehicle, a large limousine tender, and multiple robust RIBs.

The Vitruvius “touch of design” assures the seamless integration of both “facets” of the project: an attractive superyacht and a powerful explorer. The high freeboard and superstructure are cut by a set of longitudinal lines, each having its own movement and raison d’être .

With Shinkai ’s far-reaching cruising plans to explore the planet comes the responsibility to be environmentally sensitive in her operations, which Philippe Briand took into account when designing her hull lines. Even with the yacht’s generous displacement of 974GT, her hull resistance has been optimised to deliver a reasonable fuel consumption of 19.5L per nautical mile at a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Once she is delivered, her owner plans to extensively cruise around the world, from the frigid polar regions to the warmer tropics on the equator. With the capabilities afforded by her submersible and other toys, Shinkai is primed to provide those onboard with the chance to explore the oceans in three dimensions, both at the surface and well beneath it, too.

Feadship 55m explorer yacht SHINKAI leaves Aalsmeer shed

By Editorial Team   4 October 2021

Previously known as Project 708, 55m superyacht SHINKAI has just been revealed for the first time. She's been moved from the iconic builder's shipyard in Aalsmeer to the outside dock for final outfitting before she begins sea trials. She is expected to be delivered to her owner later this year.

Boasting a sleek yet dynamic profile helmed by Vitruvius and interiors by Boutsen Design, superyacht SHINKAI is primed to be a launchpad for adventure for odyssey's near and far-flung (including taking on the North-West passage later this year) for an owner with considerable experience of grueling sea expeditions. She features an advanced sonar system for exploring deep below the ocean's surface, a steel ice-class hull and remains both fuel-efficient and self-sufficient during her voyages.

But that's not all. New additions to this bold vessel not seen before include a mast and a mammoth 7400kg tonne submarine, as requested by the owner. The latter will be retrievable by crane, which will be also used for the superyacht's tender, car and crate from the aft deck.

feadship-explorer-708-vitruvius-motor-yacht-philippe-briand

55m Feadship explorer Shinkai completes sea trials

Feadship’s 55 metre custom explorer Shinkai is now nearing delivery after completing sea trials in the North Sea.

Designer Philippe Briand of Vitruvius Yachts was on board during the rigorous tests, after which he reported back to the owner that, " Shinkai will be the perfect protective and comfortable cocoon from which to explore all the world’s oceans."

“The cold, grey November weather presenting itself to us on the day of Shinkai’s sea trials could not have been better to test her unique blend of rugged explorer meets comfortable superyacht.," he added.

Scheduled for delivery early next year, Shinkai is designed to embark upon gruelling adventures, such as the North West and North East passages and features a steel, ice-class hull and an advanced sonar system for exploring the ocean floor.

Previously known as Project 708, Shinkai was designed by the Vitruvius design studio with an interior penned by Danielle Boutsen of Boutsen Design.

Traditional stabiliser fins, which could be damaged by underwater ice, have been swapped for a gyroscope system that measures 3x3 metres and weighs 23 tones. Feadship estimates the system to be the largest built to date.

Elsewhere, Shinkai has a “striking mast” and a dedicated submarine – two features specifically requested by the owner who has “enormous experience” of ocean exploration, the yard said.

The 7400kg submarine is retrieved by a “massive crane”, which has a reach of eight metres and will also be used to launch Shinkai 's limousine tender and the owner’s car from the aft deck.

Described as both “self-sufficient and fuel-efficient”, Shinkai's first adventure will be to tackle the North West passage.

About Shinkai

A striking mast and the yacht’s very own submarine: these were just two of the specific requests by an owner who has enormous experience of discovering the world by sea. Like every genuinely custom superyacht, the design for Shinkai revolved around these specific choices of the client. In this case the key was how best to incorporate a 7.2-tonne submarine on the aft deck along with the giant crane required for launching and collection. Taking this as the starting point, designer Philippe Briand and the teams at Vitruvius and Feadship have developed a 55-metre explorer yacht which will be able to travel the world while remaining both self-sufficient and fuel-efficient.

Shinkai, A 55m True Superyacht Explorer With A No-Compromise Approach

Inspired by a childhood sailing in the yachting center of La Rochelle, France, Philippe Briand has dedicated his life to perfecting the art of conquering the sea. His designs stand out for their technical excellence and precision, combined with his strong artistic flair and ability to drive innovative design trends as he seeks perfection.  As one of the founders of the Water-Revolution Foundation, he contributes to the standards moving towards the neutralization of the ecological footprint of the yachting industry, and Vitruvius Yachts are 30% more efficient than other yachts of comparable size. The custom superyacht  Shinkai  was recently transferred from Feadship’s construction hallway in Aalsmeer. The designer’s eighth superyacht has the construction, and co-naval architecture carried out by Feadship De Vries, while Daniela Boutsen has provided her interior design.

Captain shoots down rumours over mega yacht anchored off Iqaluit

M/Y Shinkai passed through Nunavut’s capital over the weekend

yacht shinkai owner name

I was in the Rankin airport when a private jet flew in and dropped off 4-5 people dressed as explorers with wealthy equipment and bags. He made a call or two and in about another hour another private jet landed and picked them up. I overheard the older man telling the captain of the jet they have been far North on a super yacht the size of a football field. Sounds like this may be the yacht in question.

' src=

Last year one of these was parked in Arctic bay and rumors were that it was Betsy DeVos and her billionaire family

' src=

THANK YOU ????

' src=

Seems not very strict country after all. Not very professional as they seem to be from forighers but no as strict.

' src=

I wonder if they were drinking Mega pints of wine on this mega yacht? Lol….

' src=

To drop into Nunavut waters a $3-million, 3 person sub called the “Most versatile scientific research submersible”, begs the question, what are they researching, looking for?

Who’s funding the research?

' src=

Who said that was happening?

' src=

Whew. I sure am glad it wasn’t a Russian Oligarch in our Harbour. Western European oligarchs are so much better.

' src=

It’s more about. If it was a Russian oligarch involved in the war effort, this boat would be a Canadian boat by now 🙂

' src=

Definitely not Russian as she just pulled in to Honolulu harbor this morning

New yacht launch – introducing shinkai.

shinkai motoryacht by philippe briand

Shinkai – the Japanese for ‘Deep Sea’

A new addition to the Vitruvius Fleet. Shinkai has all the hallmarks of a world- cruising vessel – with its own modern, rugged profile.

The steel-hulled, ice-class yacht, has been commissioned by a highly experienced owner, who has extensive plans for touring the globe. These include an audacious, high-latitude expedition north of Japan through the North-East Passage, which requires various specialist equipment for safe cruising through the ice.

The yacht is equipped with the largest gyroscope built to date, weighing 21 tonnes, as conventional stabiliser fins would be damaged by the passing pack ice.

To enjoy adventures without limits, the yacht is kitted out with a submarine for underwater exploration, a rough terrain vehicle for off-road touring and a bespoke limousine tender for comfortable and protected trips ashore, even in the most challenging of conditions.

This is a special project for us, as the yacht is the second yacht we have designed for the owner. He was the first yachtsman to adhere to the principles of the efficient hulls We are thrilled with the progress that has been made on Shinkai in recent months and are enjoying watching the final stages of her construction at Feadship. As the second Vitruvius yacht to be built at the prestigious yard, this is another meeting of great minds and great names that will no doubt result in a landmark yacht to inspire many more adventurous owners of the future.

AN INCREDIBLE superyacht has docked in Scotland on its journey around the world - sparking excitement among locals.

The 180.4ft explorer superyacht Shinkai caught the eye after being docked in Western Harbour in Leith over the weekend.

An incredible superyacht with it's own submarine spotted in Leith over the weekend

The impressive vessel sat beside the Britannia as Scots flocked to admire it's massive size.

Snaps of the three tier yacht show off the impressive size.

The outside of the vessel is a dark grey colour with some silver on the top.

From the back, the boat has a hot tub which lies on the top deck - perfect for taking in gorgeous views.

On the deck below, stunning floor to ceiling windows which will help bring in natural light.

The room is complete with a sofa, a great spot to relax and watch the waves on board.

The superyacht even has its very own submarine.

It comes as Shinkai, which is Japanese for Deep Sea, embarks on its first mission to travel the world.

It is thought to be the first of what will be a lifetime of journeys of global exploration.

And according to ship builder Feadship, the owner of this monster boat has an "enormous" amount of experience of "discovering the world by sea".

The teams at Vitruvius and Feadship developed the massive explorer alongside designer Philippe Briand.

They built it to be able to travel the world whilst remaining self-sufficient and fuel-efficient.

It comes it's own striking mast which catches the eye of onlookers.

It also has its very own 7.2 tonne submarine, which comes with a huge crane which is used for launching and collecting it.

There are already many adventures lined up for the massive vessel in the coming years.

Some of these include taking on the North-West passage.
