Review of Albin 57

Basic specs..

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

Albin 57 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.60 - 0.70 meter (1.97 - 2.27 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case the boat will typically require a power of 2 - 3 hp, alternatively 35 - 42 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

The Albin 57 is a Swedish trailerable sailboat that was designed by Rolf Magnusson as a coastal cruiser and first built in 1977. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The design was built by Albin Marine in Sweden between 1977 and 1981, with about 400 boats completed, but it is now out of production. [1] [3] [5] [6]

The Albin 57 is a recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fibreglass, with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig with aluminum spars, wire standing rigging and a single set of swept spreaders. The hull has a raked stem, a plumb transom , a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a swing keel. It displaces 1,764 lb (800 kg) and carries 562 lb (255 kg) of ballast. [1] [3]

The boat has a draft of 4.26 ft (1.30 m) with the swing keel extended and 1.97 ft (0.60 m) with it retracted, allowing ground transportation on a trailer . [1] [3]

The boat is normally fitted with a small outboard motor for docking and manoeuvring. [3]

The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and two straight settees in the main cabin. The galley is located at the companionway ladder. The galley is equipped with a two-burner stove. There are hull-mounted rectangular ports on both sides of the boat. [1] [3]

For sailing the design may be equipped with a symmetrical spinnaker of 269 sq ft (25.0 m 2 ). It has a hull speed of 5.43 kn (10.06 km/h). [3]

Operational history

At one time the boat was supported by a class club that organized racing events, Albin 57 Owners Association , but it seem to be no longer existent. [7]

The boat looks clean and well-maintained. Despite the small length (only 5.7 meters), the boat is rather wide (2.41 meters) and quite spacious.

Usually these models have a stove with two burners under the ladder, but I couldn’t find this in the photo. You can use a camping gas burner if there is no stove. Due to the lack of an entire galley, the salon seems very spacious. The cushions in the cabin have been recently resewn and look good.

A full set of sails: a mainsail with a cover and two staysails. All sails are in good working condition.

Albin 57 is a centerboard with a folding mast that can be folded even by one person. A small draft allows you to get into places that other boats cannot.

The boat has a 4.5 hp Mercury outboard motor and an additional electric motor. There is a separate transom for each motor.

Also, a trailer fitting into the road size is given with the boat. The weight of the boat with a trailer is only 1200 kg, which allows you to transport it even on a not very powerful car.
