Marietta OH is an Ohio River cruise port and town in Ohio USA (Washington County), with a population of around 15,000. The town is located at the mouth of Muskingum River's confluence with Ohio River.

The town was founded in 1788 by Yankees (colonists from New England). The first church was opened in 1796, the first college - in 1835. Town's early economy was based mainly on cargo and passenger shipping (by steamboats). Since the mid-19th-century the economy was boosted with the opening of the Baltimore-Ohio Railroad (1828), Belpre-Cincinnati Railroad (1860), Ohio Valley Railroad (1873). Steamboats regularly transported passengers between Marietta and Parkersburg WV (West Virginia). Two oil booms (1875 and 1910) attracted large investments. The Pure Oil Company (now Unocal) was founded in 1914 by the Dawes brothers.

The current-day town's economy is largely based on ferromanganese with the French company Eramet operating a large refinery here. The town is served by several major highways (including I-77 linking to Cleveland OH and Charleston WV) and by Williamstown WV's Mid-Ohio Valley Airport (3 daily flights connecting to Charlotte NC). Among the best-known tourist attractions are the annual Ohio River Sternwheel Festival (held in September, with live music performances and fireworks), Riverfront Roar (powerboat races held in July), Civil War Reenactment (September), Goodfest (music festival at Goodfellows Park), rowing regattas (throughout Spring).

As a cruise port, Marietta OH is included in the schedule of USA's largest river cruise company - ACL-American Cruise Lines . The riverport is also regularly visited by ships of AQSC-American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company . The next tables show some of the Marietta-inclusive itineraries as port sequences and prices per person (double occupancy rates).

The Valley Gem Sternwheel was a little more than a two hour drive from my parents' house. I traveled with them and my sister on a Tuesday, and we boarded for the 1:30 PM, tour. Our ride took us out on the Ohio River. There was a short history lesson at the beginning of the ride over the speaker. We saw many bridges and several islands, lovely homes, and a few of Marietta's oldest riverfront buildings. Bonus, we saw a bald eagle;) We all enjoyed the ride. The staff were super friendly, and yes, there was a restroom onboard. There were many boating options, days and times. One of the options you could get off the boat and tore a historic home. But since my Mom can't walk for long periods of time, I opted for the stay on ride. Booking online was fast and easy. It was so cool watching the stern wheel! If relaxing boat rides are your thing, I highly suggest booking a tour.

The River Gem is a very modern rear paddle wheel boat that tours portions of the river below Marietta OH. It's very comfortable with excellent ADA access for people looking for a slow tour of the river. There is food (snacks mostly) and drinks on board, and the prices were fair. The seating areas provide lots of access to see both sides of the boat, and since the boat goes up and down the same stretch of river, it doesn't matter which side you sit on. We sat on the top deck under the awning, and it was great. The staff is really friendly and the trip went perfectly. Small kids won't be too bored as it isn't a long trip and there is plenty of space to move around. The narration of the "history of Marietta" was informative, but short lived. The captain only spoke for about 30 minutes, though it was interesting. Overall, a great trip and a nice way to see the area.

Nice, relaxing 2-hour boat tour on Muskingum and Ohio Rivers with 20-minute narration.

We just enjoyed Christmas with the Blennerhassetts. Our tour was for 1230-330pm. Boarding started 30 minutes prior to departure. The actors were super friendly and very knowledgeable. We enjoyed a nice meal on the way to the island. Toured the mansion then headed back and they provided hot chocolate on the way back. They have a bar on the stern wheeler. They do accept cards for drinks on the boat. Highly recommend taking one of their tours. We took our 3 year old and he had a blast as well.

LOVE this!!!! We've lived on all three U.S. coasts, and we love being on the water. Living in West Virginia we feel landlocked, so we made it a point to learn to about river life! The Valley Gem Sternwheeler docked in Marietta, Ohio was just the ticket. A tour hour ride with a nice Sunday Brunch, plus Bloody Marys made for a perfect day! I think the tickets were $32, which to me was a real steel. They offer other promotions besides brunch, so check them out in season!

Took the Willow Island Lock trip. Lunch was served - nice food and service. The trip to the lock was scenic and some commentary by the captain, regarding what we were seeing. The trip through the lock was really cool. Very informative and fun. The guy (can't remember his name) who was tying off and such, was really personable and answered a ton of questions I threw at him. Really fun and knowledgeable guy. In this world of poor customer service, I have zero negative things to say about our entire day trip!! Will definitely be visiting Valley Gem again.

If you want an enjoyable 2 hour boat ride, this is the way to go. One suggestion if you want to be out of the sun is to get there early because there are limited shaded area on the upper deck. There is a lot room on the lower deck but I like the outside. It is a very scenic ride and a lot to see on a relaxing boat ride.

Photo of Ellen M.

We took the 2 hour dinner cruise and really enjoyed the ride. The weather was perfect and the boat in pristine shape. Lots of staff on hand and they were super efficient and friendly. The first hour is spent downstairs in the dining area where you get a full buffet of prime rib (cooked perfectly), chicken Marsala, and vegetarian lasagna. There were also some sides, salad, and dessert options. Alcohol is available for purchase, but only when we are on the Ohio River, which I thought interesting. Otherwise, there is tea and water. Once dinner was over, we went upstairs for the last hour to enjoy the cruise. The owner spoke of the history of the area and we were able to ask questions. All in all a wonderful evening. I was skeptical about the food before going as most of these types of events have subpar food, but they did great. Not surprising they have a restaurant as well. If you're in the area, or even if you want something fun to do, it's worth the drive.

We took the 1.5 hour sightseeing tour. We sat in the upper deck which is where we prefer to be. The staff were very friendly. The ride was pleasant. The price was a good value. Subs, chips, and pop were available to purchase if wanted. Having taken other boat tours, I thought there would be more narration, but what was said was informative and interesting. I would definitely take one of the other tours.

What a wonderful relaxing time on the Muskingum River. Lots of narrated historic information presented from the river, the same view of The Pioneers who founded the city in 1788.

2023 Riverboat Days to kick off in Marietta

14 stops are scheduled this year, with the American Countess kicking off the 2023 season on May 28th.

14 stops are scheduled this year, with the American Countess kicking off the 2023 season on...

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - The unofficial start of summer in Marietta is when the first riverboat docks at the Ohio River Levee on Front Street.

The American Heritage is scheduled be the final visit of the year on September 20th.

The American Queen, hailed as the largest steamboat ever built, will not be visiting the river city in 2023.

Emmy Strauss, with the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the riverboat season supports many local businesses throughout Marietta.

“With it being so close to downtown and front street, all of the local businesses see an increase of people. From people that are dining to come view the boat and the people on the boat that shop and want to bring back souvenirs from their time in Marietta.”

Visitors are not allowed to step on, tour, or ride any of the visiting boats. All dates and times are subject to change without notice.

It’s been two years, but this summer, the American Queen, American Duchess and Queen of the Mississippi will return to Marietta.

The riverboat tour season, which runs from June through September, will see nine stops at the Ohio River Levee.

Shannon Folts, visitor experience director with the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitor Bureau, said the boats last stopped in 2019,

“Marietta is typically always on the schedule for a tour of some kind,” she said. “The past few years at least.”

She explained when these large riverboats stop, visitors can experience the shops and restaurants in downtown Marietta. Folts said 100 to 150 people could disembark the American Queen, pre-COVID.

“They usually typically stay between four and eight hours during their visit,” she said. Times and dates are listed on the bureau’s Facebook page and website, mariettaohio.org.

Their Facebook page should be checked before visiting the levee, as docking times can change. Things like high water levels can also change whether or not the boat docks.

The website for the American Queen Steamboat Company notes the American Duchess is a boutique-style riverboat that has suites ranging from 180 to 550 square feet.

It will be in town June 12 and 16.

The site also states the American Queen is the largest steamboat ever built and is the company’s flagship paddlewheeler. It will be in town July 3 and 7.

The third boat to dock this summer at the levee is the Queen of the Mississippi, which cruises the Mississippi and Ohio rivers from New Orleans to Minneapolis or Cincinnati, notes the Civil War Cruises site.

It will dock at the levee five days this summer – Aug. 17 and 21, and Sept. 6, 26 and 30.

7 Reasons A Stay On The World’s Largest Steamboat Is My Favorite U.S. Cruise

riverboat tours marietta ohio

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • River Cruises
  • Types of Travel

I have been on several cruises and travel adventures around the world, but recently, I’ve felt the need to focus on discovering great destinations closer to home. The U.S. is filled with countless experiences that travelers can unlock, and a river cruise offers the chance to see so many things in an efficient, hassle-free, and fun way.

Our summer cruise on the Ohio River took us from Pittsburgh to Louisville, and the itinerary included stops in Marietta, Ohio; Huntington, West Virginia; Augusta, Kentucky; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Madison, Indiana, before reaching Louisville.

I had been on voyages on the Mighty Mississippi River and even a couple in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake rivers that traverse through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. These itineraries are fairly well known, but I was fascinated to see what an Ohio River cruise was all about. I was happy to accept an invite from American Queen Voyages to review this special itinerary.

As it turns out, it’s filled with memorable experiences and a range of fun ways to spend your days. The best part about our trip, though, was how we got there. American Queen owns a special charm and an incredible river cruise program that makes it a favorite way to cruise within the U.S. Here’s why.

The American Queen in Madison, Indiana

1. An Itinerary With Small Towns And Big Cities

Pittsburg, pennsylvania.

American Queen Voyages offers a pre-cruise hotel stay in Pittsburgh, and it was nice to explore the City of Bridges for a day. We had lunch at the famous Primanti Brothers, diving into our hearty sandwiches — complete with fries stuffed onto the pastrami between slices of Italian bread. And we washed it down with a couple of Iron City beers.

The embarkation pier for the riverboat sits at the doorstep of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ football stadium, making for a scenic sail away from the confluence of the three rivers (Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela).

Cincinnati, Ohio

The cruise also features a stop in Cincinnati and wraps up in Louisville, so travelers have opportunities to explore these interesting big cities and all they have to offer. We went for a bike ride on the riverfront, explored the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, and had lunch and craft beers at Moerlein Lager House.

Louisville, Kentucky

In Louisville, cruisers can explore city highlights like the famed Churchill Downs (Kentucky Derby track) or the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory before catching flights back home.

These big cities are nice, but it’s the small towns that really make this trip shine. Residents gather along the banks of the river to cheer our arrival or give us a friendly sendoff each day. Each riverside destination, no matter how small, loves to show off its slice of American history and regional attractions, such as quirky museums, pretty churches, and, of course, its local shops and eateries.

Marietta, Ohio

In Marietta, Ohio, attractions included Mound Cemetery, one of the oldest in the original Northwest Territory, the Ohio River Museum, and the Childen’s Toy & Doll Museum.

Huntington, West Virginia

When I went ashore in Huntington, West Virginia, the hop-on, hop-off bus loop took us to the Touma Medical Museum, a delightful little open-air railroad museum (a yard filled with colorful old rail cars), Ritter Park Rose Garden, and the Marshall University Campus, which features a wonderful grounds filled with statues, sculptures, trees, and flowers.

Augusta, Kentucky

In Augusta, Kentucky, AQV passengers were able to walk just a few hundred steps from our spot on the river to explore the Rosemary Clooney Museum. This is the former home of actress, singer, and aunt to superstar George Clooney. Highlights of this charming town also include Bates Garden, the 1811 Jail, and Baker-Bird Winery.

Madison, Indiana

There was another railroad museum to see in Madison, Indiana, and the town also lists the Schroeder Saddletree Factory, the Broadway Fountain, and Lanier Mansion as top attractions for visitors to check out.

The Grand Ballroom of the American Queen

2. Enriching Entertainment

While each port stop features a variety of things for cruisers to explore, this fancy riverboat offers a daily program with a mix of musical performances, trivia competitions, movies, bingo, and variety shows.

Music, trivia, and enrichment talks are held in American Queen’s majestic Grand Saloon theater space. During our cruise, we saw Phil Westbrook several times, as the singer and piano man performed a tribute to Frank Sinatra as well as entertained passengers at the intimate Captain’s Bar just outside the main J.M. White Dining Room.

We also dropped by the theater for shows by guitarist Logan Reeves and a song and dance variety production on TV theme songs from the American Queen Ensemble and the Steamboat Syncopators house band. The shows draw on plenty of nostalgia but definitely favor an era more familiar to cruisers 70 and older. However, the overall mood is quite fun.

A hip vibe can be found nightly at the Engine Room Bar, where the ship’s musicians get the crowd dancing with a great mix of blues and rock tunes.

Fresh pastries on the American Queen

3. Regionally Inspired Cuisine

The American Queen chefs kept us well-fed. Meals are served in the main dining room and in the casual eatery called the Front Porch, which offers wonderful views as you cruise on the river. When the weather is nice, it’s worth having at least one dinner outside there to enjoy the sunset and sailing.

The menu includes items like chicken fried steak, frog legs, and a variety of steak and fish preparations. The cuisine is more hearty than healthy, but you can find some fresh fruits and salads in the mix at the lunch buffets. We were always tempted by the mouth-watering selection of homemade pies and slices of chocolate cake set out each day at lunch. There always is a delicious soup, gumbo, or chili available, too.

If you need a snack, you can swing by the Front Porch for a bag of fresh popcorn, a couple of cookies, or a soft-serve ice cream cone or dish.

The author and Colleen riding bikes in Cincinnati

4. Set Your Own Pace

As a person who loves his daily workouts, I’m happy that a river cruise on American Queen makes it easy. Not only is there a well-equipped gym, but the ship carries a fleet of bikes. Colleen and I started several days with a run along the riverside trails through small towns or by grabbing a couple of bikes to go exploring independently.

In general, river cruising allows travelers the chance to explore on their own in a hassle-free way. It’s so easy to stroll onto and off of the ship at your leisure, and the towns and cities are mere steps away. You can go set your own schedule for the day if you’re not interested in rigorously following the ship excursion program.

Pro Tip: Ask crew members for their insight on nice places to eat or go shopping — or for their favorite places to get a coffee or craft brew. We received great insight from lead butler Adam, who is a coffee connoisseur and loves to find and frequent local cafes along all the river towns he visits.

The author at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame

5. Hop-On, Hop-Off Tours

American Queen Voyages provides a wonderful service in its hop-on, hop-off bus routes in each city and on each river itinerary that it operates. Passengers walk off the ship and straight onto waiting buses with clear signage at each stop along the route at the attractions in town.

Cruisers love being able to have peace of mind that they will see a nice mix of highlights in each port without worrying about transportation. You can get off at each spot or pick and choose what you are interested in on the loop.

Deck chairs on the American Queen

6. Plenty Of Space Onboard

American Queen itself is an attraction. Built in 2012 and carrying up to 417 passengers, this is the largest steamship ever built. The décor takes you back in time to a golden era of steamship travel. The Grand Saloon resembles a 19th-century opera house with private boxes wrapped around the theater and hanging over the main level and the stage adorned with a large red curtain.

Chandeliers fill the main restaurant, rocking chairs line the railings on the front porch, and gingerbread ornamentation accents the staircases and stateroom patios of the bright white ship. The signature big red paddlewheel churns at the stern of the ship helping to power the voyage along the river.

American Queen features a large Mark Twain Gallery that serves as a reading room (with a small computer area). It’s outfitted with vintage lamps and antique chairs and all kinds of mementos of a bygone time, including river ship models, paintings, books, vases, and other collectibles.

There are two parlors at the very front of the ship ahead of the Main Twain Gallery, and these spots also are carefully decorated and ideal for working on puzzles, reading, or enjoying the river views while relaxing with friends.

The author on a steamboat cruise on the Ohio River

7. Scenic Sailing

I found the periods of sailing from town to town one of the most relaxing and satisfying parts of this river cruise. It was fabulous to watch the world floating by, with the pretty evening sunsets, flowing waters, and subtle bends in the river. We would pass under a variety of bridge styles and see trains on adjacent tracks and tugboats pushing coal barges.

Cruisers also enjoyed the process of watching our big riverboat pass through the locks along the way.

Pro Tip: Make sure to head up to the top deck for sail aways each day. Crowds gather along the banks of the river to wave you off and wish you well on the journey. And one of the musicians will come out to play some tunes on the boat’s steam calliope. It’s a fun spectacle!

Plan a Visit to Ohio River Museum

The Ohio River Museum and WP Snyder are currently closed.

Watch us grow!

Our new ohio river museum will be under construction soon..

The Ohio River Museum opened at its current location in 1973. This museum features exhibits recounting the history of the Ohio River and the many different types of boats that have been transporting people and cargo for hundreds of years. The Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen have provided many of the steamboat artifacts that are featured in the museum. Their pride in sharing the history of our inland waterways and with the public and their continued support of the museum is greatly appreciated.

Three buildings of exhibits focus on the history of the Ohio River and its importance relating to the expansion of our country. The Golden Age of the steamboat recalls the romance and luxury as many people traveled the river in style. The river’s natural history explores the stories of the beauty and the ugliness that the inland rivers sometimes tell.

WP Snyder Jr.

The pride of the museum is the W.P. Snyder, Jr., the last of the steam-powered, stern wheeled towboats in the United States and a National Historic Landmark. Docked on the Muskingum River and open for guided tours since 1955, the Snyder takes visitors back to a different era of work boats on the river. A “pool type” towboat, the Snyder boasts a steel hull AND hog chains. Steering levers were used on the Snyder but the pilot wheel is still present.

More Outdoor Exhibits

Outside is the Tell City Pilot House, a flat boat reproduction, a restored shanty boat, and a series of poles showing the heights of some on the worst floods in recorded history to hit this area.

Free Parking

Free parking is available in the museum parking lot. Ohio River Museum is also wheelchair accessible, except for W.P. Snyder. If you planning a visit to the Ohio River Museum, also make time to see Campus Martius Museum , just a three-minute walk from the Ohio River Museum.
