The lake is jam packed in the summer season as everyone in the city flocks to Lake Michigan. This is a consequence of the small window of opportunity to enjoy warm days on the water. 

It’s not just on the lake where people gather but along the Chicago River running through the center of the city. Downtown dockage is available but tends to fill up fast so reservations are encouraged. Just like the lake, the boat traffic in the Chicago River gets congested during the season months and does require precautious boating. 

Safety Requirements:

Boating License/Education Rules: Valid Boating Safety Certificate issued by the Department of Natural Resources or an entity or organization recognized and approved by the Department is required.

Life Jacket Requirements: 13 and under must wear a PFD.

Will definitely be booking again! I celebrated my 24th birthday with some friends and it was an amazing experience. The owner responded quickly and answered ALL questions. The price was great for 4 hours on a BEAUTIFUL day and the Debonair was exactly as pictured! Captain Jim was amazing! We enjoyed talking and learning from him! Do not hesitate to book!!

First let me say how kind, funny and accommodating Captain Jim is. He explained everything we needed to know. He provided us with ice and water. He took an amazing route along the lake! The vessel itself is beautiful. Comfortably accommodating for 12 ppl. We had the 7p-11p sail and was able to catch the fireworks at the end of the night. 10/10! We’ll definitely be booking again!

Great boat and captain! We loved the experience. Overall, best trip yet. Just make a note that the captain "tip and fee" are not included in the quote and when we heard from the captain he was cool and explained why - but it was quite misleading to not read this in the quote or listing somewhere ahead of time. We were sent the "fine print" about the laws around this after the fact. Just be aware. Overall, great choice for a boat and captain and we'd book them again. Thanks!

CHICAGO — The Chicago Water Taxi will soon be back to ferrying people along the river seven days a week.

The water taxi — which has six routes — limited service in 2019 and again during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s bringing back daily rides starting Saturday, according to the Tribune’s Sarah Freishtat .

The boats will make three stops, and there will not be service at the previous Chicago Avenue and Goose Island stations for now, according to the Tribune.

The bright yellow boats are a regular sight Downtown on the Chicago River, allowing tourists, commuters and other types of travelers to skip traffic for a more scenic trip.

A one-way ticket is $6, a weekday 10-ride pass is $25 and an all-day pass is $10.

National news | what we know about the dali, the cargo vessel that crashed into baltimore’s key bridge.

A 948-foot-long cargo vessel pulling out of the Port of Baltimore struck a support column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, sending cars and eight people into the Patapsco River.

The Sri Lanka-bound ship, known as the Dali, was traveling at 8 knots, or about 9 mph, when it struck a support column at 1:27 a.m., collapsing the bridge and leading Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott to declare states of emergency.

Two people were rescued from the river, including one who was later released from the hospital after being treated for injuries. Six construction workers were still unaccounted for Tuesday night as authorities pledged to resume recovery efforts Wednesday morning . None of the men have been officially identified, though Moore said he had spoken to their families, and Scott said the city would “wrap our arms around them and our entire community.”

Darrell Wilson, a spokesperson representing Dali’s owner, Singaporean firm Grace Ocean Pte. Ltd., and manager, Synergy Marine Group, said the two firms were “fully cooperating” with federal and state government agencies.

Here’s what we know about the Dali:

Its shipper was cited last summer for violating maritime whistleblower protection law

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration ruled last summer that the Danish cargo company Maersk Line Limited had violated the Seaman Protection Act by firing an employee who had complained about safety violations to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Dali was carrying Maersk customers’ cargo at the time of the Tuesday collision, though no Maersk crew or personnel were onboard. The Seaman’s Protection Act ensures that employees are not punished or retaliated against for reporting maritime safety violations to the U.S. Coast Guard or other federal agencies.

In an 11-page letter dated July 20, 2023 , OSHA Assistant Regional Administrator Michael Mabee said Maersk had violated maritime law and ordered it to reinstate the unnamed employee and reimburse his legal fees, damages and back pay totaling $372,597.07. The employee had complained that the ship had a leak and needed repairs to its cargo hold bilge system before Maersk fired him in March 2021, according to OSHA.

In an emailed statement, Maersk spokesperson Kevin Doell said the company disagreed with the OSHA finding, which was first reported by investigative outlet The Lever, and intended to appeal “this flawed decision.”

“Maersk Line Limited is proud of its safety culture and its highest priority remains the safety and security of our mariners and shoreside colleagues,” Doell said.

The ship had docked in Baltimore since Friday

The Dali had landed in Baltimore on Friday, according to Andy Middleton, director of the Apostleship of the Sea.

The director of the Catholic ministry, which assists crew members while their ships are docked at the Port of Baltimore, had taken the Dali’s crew members shopping at Walmart. They were anticipating a 28-day sojourn to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and planned to sail around South Africa to avoid unrest in the Red Sea.

“We’re a friendly face when they come into the Port of Baltimore,” Middleton said of crew members whom Apostleship of the Sea assists. “I’m glad we were able to provide services for them before they sailed.”

The cause of the Baltimore collision is unknown

It’s not clear what exactly caused the ship to strike the bridge’s support column. The ship left the port around 1 a.m. and collided with the bridge at 1:27 a.m.

Clayton Diamond, executive director of the American Pilots Association, confirmed earlier news reports that the ship had a “complete blackout” and lost power to its engine and navigation equipment a few minutes before the collision. It never regained power, Diamond confirmed via email.

Crew members onboard issued a “mayday” alert before impact, allowing authorities to halt traffic from entering the bridge before it crumbled.

The Dali was cited for deficiencies with its propulsion and auxiliary machinery during a June 2023 inspection at the Port of San Antonio in Chile, according to the Electronic Quality Shipping Information System, a shipping information website.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the collision with assistance from the Coast Guard. The probe will examine problems with the ship’s power, its structure, and design, according to Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the safety board.

The Dali’s owners said all of its 22 crew members and two pilots were accounted for.

It had previously been in a port collision

The Dali, which was built in 2015, had previously been in an accident at a Belgian port.

In July 2016, the ship struck a quay while leaving the Port of Antwerp, according to Vessel Finder. The collision caused significant damage to its hull, requiring the vessel to be docked and detained at the port until it was operational again.

4 dead, 7 injured after stabbing attack in Rockford, Ill.; suspect in custody

ROCKFORD, Ill. – At least four people are dead and seven others were injured, including one in critical condition, after a man went on a stabbing rampage Wednesday in northern Illinois, authorities said.

Carla Redd, the police chief in Rockford, a city about 94 miles northwest of Chicago, said police received a medical call at 1:14 p.m. Authorities then received additional calls for paramedics and police, who responded to the area and discovered multiple crime scenes.

A suspect was taken into custody and questioned by police on Wednesday afternoon, Redd told reporters on Wednesday. The suspect was later identified as a 22-year-old man.

"This is a pretty painstaking event," Redd said. "My heart goes out to the families right now who are suffering a loss."

Redd noted that not all of the victims were stabbed and none had been shot. The motive behind the attacks remains unknown.

Rockford police later identified the four victims killed as a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man and a 22-year-old man. Their names were not released to the public.

Three of the four victims who were killed died at the scenes, according to Rockford Fire Department District Chief Will Pederson. The fourth victim was transported to a local hospital and later died.

Of those injured, one person was in critical condition and four were in stable condition, Rockford police said. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said two more victims were also injured in its jurisdiction, WIFR 23 and The Associated Press reported.

Wednesday's attack came just days after an 18-year-old Walmart employee in Rockford was stabbed and killed. A 28-year-old man was arrested and is facing a first-degree murder charge, according to police.

Police arrested suspect after home invasion report

The suspect was taken into custody by a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy after they received a report of a home invasion, Sheriff Gary Caruana said.

"The young lady ran from him," Caruana said, describing one of the victims who survived the attack. "She got some stab wounds (in her hands and her face). She is currently at a hospital... in serious condition."

A good Samaritan had stopped to help the woman and suffered some stab wounds, according to Caruana. "He's fine," the sheriff added. "He has been checked out."

Police confirmed that one of the victims killed in the attack was a mail carrier. Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said multiple jurisdictions are investigating the incident.

"Today, we are shocked by another horrific act of violence against innocent members of our community. We can report that the suspect is in custody and the threat has been neutralized," McNamara said in a statement Wednesday. "Now that he is in custody, our primary concern is ensuring that our community members directly impacted by this violence are supported throughout their healing and recovery."

'You never expect this here'

Eric Patterson walked through his neighborhood Wednesday afternoon trying to make sense of a rampage that had turned his quiet street into a crime scene.

Patterson saw two bloody young teenagers and a middle-aged woman with a wound to her neck taken by stretcher to ambulances. He saw what appeared to be evidence of a mailman being run over by a vehicle and attacked, his gear left strewn across a yard.

"It makes no sense," Patterson said. "It’s almost like playing a video game, but it's reality. It makes no sense. It’s like Grand Theft Auto. I'm going to run over the mailman here. I'm going to stab a couple people there. I am going to go in this house over here. It’s not making sense. You can’t rationalize this."

Cassandra Hernandez, another neighborhood resident, said she is friends with one of the victims and fears for the life of the mailman who neighbors believe was both hit by a vehicle and stabbed during the attack.

"You never expect this here," Hernandez said. "I just took my dog on a walk right here yesterday morning. ... Just to think that it happened here, and we have such great neighbors and the mailman. I just have a feeling he is gone, and he was a very good man. I am very sad."

The Motor Row District is a  historic district  in Chicago's South Loop. Motor Row includes historic buildings on  Michigan Avenue  just South of Cermak, directly west of  McCormick Place  convention center, and  The district was built between 1905 and 1936 by a number of notable architects.  At Chicago Motor Row's peak, as many as 116 different makes of automobiles were sold and repaired on the street.

The big day is finally here as Major League Baseball officially opens up its 2024 schedule with a lengthy list of games — including the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox , who face off in the Windy City on Thursday afternoon.

The Motor City Kitties come into the season following up on a 78-84 effort last summer that landed them in second place among their American League Central peers. Of course, the Tigers finished nine games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins, but there was finally a glimpse of progress in Detroit.

The ChiSox, on the other hand, struggled mightily with a 61-101 final tally which landed them fourth in the division 26 games behind Minnesota. Things do not bode well for this upcoming campaign either, so it could be a long summer for the Chicago boys.

Game 1 Pitching Matchup (2023)

Game 1 : LHP Tarik Skubal (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Garrett Crochet (0-0, 0.00)

Skubal embarks upon a 2024 campaign that carries high expectations for the highly-heralded southpaw. The 27-year-old hurler led all major league pitchers in fWAR during the second half of last season, collecting 2.9 fWAR over 72 1/3 innings pitched. Among pitchers who threw at least 80 innings, he ranked fifth in ERA, first in FIP, third in strikeout rate, first in WHIP, sixth in swinging-strike rate and fourth in CSW rate.

Crochet enters his fourth big league season still wet behind the ears at 24 years old and with just 73 total MLB innings pitched — all in relief — since 2020. The lefty earned the opening-day starter honor out of spring camp after a very strong spring training showing. He threw 12 2/3 innings during the preseason, in which he recorded 14 strikeouts and one walk while flashing a 100 mph fastball along with a newly-added cutter and a biting slider.

Game 2 : RHP Kenta Maeda (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Michael Soroka (0-0, 0.00)

Maeda comes to the Tigers after spending a couple of seasons with the Minnesota Twins ; prior to that, the right-hander had spent four years with the Los Angeles Dodgers . Now a member of the Motor City Kitties, it is hoped that he will bring stability to a rotation that features both new and young faces, and his career numbers suggest that he will. In his pair of campaigns in the American League, he threw 173.0 innings for a 3.90 ERA, 3.68 FIP and 1.09 WHIP — which includes his league-best 0.75 WHIP in 2022.

Soroka is also a newcomer to his 2024 team by way of the Atlanta Braves , where he had spent his entire MLB career prior. After showing a lot of promise in his first two-plus seasons in the big leagues, an Achilles injury derailed his ascent, followed by a forearm injury that in total kept him off the field for two years. He struggled last season in Atlanta, throwing 32.1 innings with a 6.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 6.56 FIP, but he comes into this summer with a clean slate.

Game 3 Pitching Matchup

Game 3 : RHP Jack Flaherty (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Erick Fedde (0-0, 0.00)

Flaherty comes to Detroit also looking to recapture the magic he brought into the league when he finished fifth on the Rookie of the Year ballot in 2018 while earning Cy Young and MVP votes in 2019. After six-plus years with the St. Louis Cardinals , the Baltimore Orioles acquired him via trade in 2023 but were ostensibly disappointed with his performance. The Tigers hope the 28-year-old can find enough mojo to keep the starting rotation afloat in 2024.

Fedde returns Stateside after spending a year with the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization, where he excelled as a starter. The 31-year-old’s numbers overseas were a stark contrast to what he put up against American competition, against whom the right-hander recorded a 5.41 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 5.17 FIP over 454.1 innings that stretched across six seasons — all with the Washington Nationals . The Sox are hoping that he found something extra while he was in Korea.

Series Outlook: Tigers should get off to a good start

The pitching matchups appear to favor the Tigers but playing on the road against a division rival is always a tough deal. Still, there is a lot of optimism going into the season and a series win (or dare I say, a sweep) by the Olde English D would really get the fanbase going early. And who knows, maybe a strong start will be the key to competing for the AL Central crown.
