With engineering excellence, performance prowess and luxury accommodations, the 93 Motor Yacht has solidified the Viking Yacht Company's position as the finest builder of luxury motor yachts in the marine industry. The recent world premiere of the 214,685-pound vessel marked the successful completion of a 2-1/2-year quest to build the largest-ever yacht since the company was founded in 1964.

"We have a history of building ground-breaking boats, and never has this been so true as with the 93 Motor Yacht," says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey.

The tri-deck motor yacht, powered with twin state-of-the-art 1,945-hp MTU diesels, combines the performance of a convertible sportfish with the luxury and accommodations of a motor yacht. She tops out from 26.5-27.5 knots and cruises from 21-24 knots. The 93 MY runs fast, but she also has the legs for long-distance destination cruises, with a range exceeding 400 nautical miles at cruising speeds.

With a 24-foot, 4-inch beam, the vessel holds five staterooms and seven heads, two expansive salons and after decks, a huge forward galley, 12 televisions, storage for a tender and crew quarters for three. "Everything from the engineroom to the staterooms to the showers to the galley to the salon is big, accommodating and comfortable," says Pat. "In the U.S. Ñ and in all of the Americas Ñ people like big, and that's what we're giving them."

You'll be hard-pressed to find this level of engineering in any other motor yacht. In our industry-leading engineroom, our custom exhaust system serves as an example of our experience and attention to detail. Painted with Awlgrip in bright Snow White for easier visibility and maintenance, the engineroom is equipped with technologically advanced but easy-to-maintain systems for engineroom ventilation, air conditioning, fire suppression, oil changing and centralized seawater and freshwater.

Enclosed Bridge The enclosed bridge, accessed from the salon and lower after deck, showcases an impressive center helm with a Stidd helm chair and flanking Stidd companion seats. Navigation and communication systems from the Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics assure turnkey delivery. Open the large powered sunroof to invite in the sunshine and sea breeze as you relax in the L-shaped sofa that faces a pop-up flat-screen HD TV. A day head adds to the overall convenience of this unique area.

Main Deck Enjoy the outdoors on the expansive forward and aft decks. The foredeck is loaded with comfortable padded seating and lounges that sit atop storage compartments, easily accessed with gas piston-assisted hatch lids. The aft deck dinette includes a U-shaped settee and twin solid teak leaf tables that allow you to create one single, large dining table. Forward, there's a bar with an L-shaped counter, three polished stainless steel bar stools, a fold-out television, refrigeration, an ice maker, a storage cabinet and a sink. Dual staircases on the port and starboard sides lead down to the hydraulically powered swim platform, which provides access to the garage that can house a dinghy or other small watercraft.

Enter the salon through polished stainless-steel framed sliding glass doors. The salon offers a U-shaped seating area with two end tables, a cocktail table, a home entertainment center with pop-up 65-inch flat-screen HD TV and a formal dining area for eight. Starboard-side hydraulic-powered sliding doors lead to a teak-covered sidedeck, and a powered balcony door that opens outboard with the touch of a button.

The galley, forward of the salon, has the pleasant atmosphere of a country kitchen. Four fixed bar stools with footrests rim an island Caesarstone-topped counter. Just aft of the windshield, there's also a forward banquette with a table. The latest appliances and conveniences are easily accessible and include a full-size 7-foot-tall Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, microwave/convection oven and a four-burner cooktop with a conventional oven below. A 32-inch flat-screen TV fixed outboard of the cabinetry on the port side can be viewed from both the bar and the banquette. A day head is just a few steps away on the starboard side.

Accommodations You'll find spaciousness and elegance throughout the five-stateroom layout below. The privately accessed full beam master suite is royally appointed with designer touches, including plush wall-to-wall premium carpeting, a king-size bed, a surround-sound entertainment system with 65-inch flat-screen HD TV, a walk-in closet, a port-side vanity and a starboard table with two chairs and an ensuite head. Generous amounts of natural light fill stateroom, accentuating the high-gloss walnut woodwork.

Four additional staterooms will ensure utmost comfort and privacy for family and guests. The forward VIP stateroom has a queen walk-around bed with decorative Channell glass ensconced in the headboard, an overhead skylight, a maple-lined hanging locker and an ensuite head. Crew quarters discreetly reached from the after deck include a pair of staterooms, a head with shower and a galley with a dinette.

Boarding OBSESSION is via either two port side boarding gates: one starboard side or via the swim platform from a floating dock.

The aft deck is very spacious with fixed and loose seating, a walk behind bar, full overhang and teak decks.   Open tread steps lead to the boat deck.

The salon is accessed via a sliding door.   Inside are interior steps to the Skylounge and cabinets to starboard and a C-shaped sectional to port.

Forward is an eight place dining table with cabinets outboard to port.   To starboard are full height sliding doors and a hydraulic opening balcony in the hull side.

Next forward are steps to the private Master suite and to port the large “Country Kitchen” with seating forward and a Day Head to starboard.

Further forward to starboard are steps to the guest cabin area including a large ensuite VIP forward, a starboard side upper/lower cabin, a port side queen berth ensuite cabin, a twin lower berth cabin and a head shared by the two starboard side twin cabins.   Also in the companionway is a laundry center.

The Skylounge is reached by nine open tread steps from the salon.   The centerline helm has companion Stidd double bench seats port and starboard.  

Also in the Skylounge is an L-shaped upholstered settee with a high low table, an entertainment center to starboard followed by a Day Head.

The Boat Deck has a walk behind bar with 4 stools, loose deck furniture and a table with steps to the Aft Deck.

The Crew area has steps behind the Flybridge stairs for access.   There is a starboard side bunk room, a centered shared head and shower and a port side extra wide single berth with a small seating area outside the cabin.

The engine room is aft with an emergency exit aft through to garage.

The Salon is very open with plenty of ambient lighting from the large side and aft windows.   The sliding Trend entry door has two panels that slide open to give an extra wide entryway.   Immediately to starboard upon entering are open steps to the Skylounge.

Next forward are a series of cabinets including dedicated stemware in Lucite cut-outs, three drawers and the yacht’s entertainment center including a ­­­­ Bose receiver, Samsung Blue Ray player, Direct TV HD DVR, a URC network controller and a Luxul router and wireless controller plus a Direct TV HD receiver.   For the Aft Deck.   The 65” Samsung TV and sound bar raises from the central cabinet behind the glass storage.   Furthest forward is a U-Line glass front wine cooler.

To port is a large light blue leather C-shaped sofa with storage below.   Each corner has a high gloss wooden table with storage within that lifts mechanically.   Electric Ocean Air blinds cover the side windows with sconce lights between each window.   Above is a decorative fabric valance with soffit style A/C delivery in the walnut joinery.   A stone and stainless end table and matching coffee table lie in front of the sofa.   A custom opaque shade is on the large aft sliding door area.

The sole of this area is Avalon Acacia Cocoa plank flooring.   Above are 18 LED lights and a smoke/fire alarm sensor.

Dining Salon

Forward and open to the salon is the dining area.   The high gloss table with inset stainless steel trim has a fixed wood base.   The low back upholstered chairs allow dining for eight persons.   Above the table is a slightly raised soffit with eight LED lights.   Forward is an upholstered section of the forward bulkhead with the owner’s artwork.   To port is a series of six cabinet doors containing the yacht’s dishes and cutlery.

To starboard is a very unique feature of this Viking 93.   Two DUAL panel floor to ceiling glass doors slide open to the side deck.    An Opacmare folding balcony opens to expand the area dramatically.

The wood sole of the salon continues forward through the dining area.   Above are 12 LED lights, two of which are dedicated to the aft work.  

Just forward to starboard are the steps to the private Master cabin.

Next forward to starboard is the main deck Day Head.   The Day Head has a two door vanity with a Ceasarstone top with a Kohler china sink mounted above.   A wood trimmed mirror is above the sink.

Large side windows are covered with electric Oceanair shades.

Accessed from nine lighted steps with a door at the bottom landing, the Master cabin is both private and elegant.   A full king island berth is off the aft bulkhead.   Each side has a three drawer nightstand and a two bulb sconce light mounted above the upholstered head board.   There are two drawers below the berth.   Aft to starboard is a large walk-in wardrobe with a digital safe, HD SAT TV DVR, a Samsung Blue Ray player and plenty of hanging space.

To starboard going forward is a two person desk/breakfast nook below a large hull side window with auto Oceanair shades.   Forward are three large storage drawers with a high gloss wood top.

To port is a series of four drawers and a cabinet with a high gloss wood top followed by a hinged top vanity with six drawers and an upholstered stool.   Above is a large matching hull side window with Oceanair electric shaded.

Inboard is access to the cabins ensuite head.

To starboard is a series of five walnut cabinets and five drawers.   From this area a Samsung 40” TV raises and lowers.   Within the cabinet is a Fusion AM/FM/CD/DVD player.   Next aft is the skylounge Day Head.

Opposite the Day Head is an aft facing bar with three fixed wood pedestal stools.   The aft window retracts to allow   the bar attendant on the boat deck bar to serve the inside bar.

The two pane door, bi-folds effectively opening up the entire aft bulkhead.

Crew Quarters

The crew quarters are located forward of the engine room with a separate access off the aft deck giving the area total privacy for the crew.

The common area has access to the two cabins and includes a double seat facing a 32” Samsung TV and a Fusion AM/FM/CD/DVD player.   A countertop below has two refrigerator drawers for extra cold storage.   Above is a Samsung microwave oven.   A table folds out from the bulkhead as needed.   The head is centerline forward.   The engine room access is centerline aft.   To port is the Captain’s cabin and to starboard a bunk cabin.

Inside Viking Yachts’ 93 Motor Yacht

In recent years, Viking Yachts has enjoyed nothing short of a coup in the semicustom sport-fisherman market. The New Jersey builder seems to know what its angling-focused customers desire even before the customers do. In fact, Viking says that it accounts for about 70 percent of the 110 or so large sport-fishermen built and sold each year. The builder is less known for its Motor Yacht line, which, until now, had two models: a 75 and an 82. That line’s new flagship, the 93 Motor Yacht, is the largest that Viking has offered since 2010, when its partnership with Princess Yachts in the U.K. produced the Viking Sport Cruisers 84. Though the 93 Motor Yacht is based on the 75’s design, the Westport 112 also helped it come to fruition. One Viking owner also has a Westport, and Viking’s designers and top brass spent a good amount of time on board that yacht learning how to nail down the needs of owners in that size range. What Viking developed from that experience is a boat built for socializing, one that lets hands-on owners feel at home while enjoying mega-yacht features.

The 93 can host a party of 50 without feeling crowded, yet it can also be driven by an owner, along with a crew as small as two people (though four or five might be the more common choice). And the yacht is designed to feel as open as possible, despite being enclosed. Features such as a flip-down, hydraulic terrace to starboard in the salon as well as low-slung seating that doesn’t obstruct views help create that sense of openness. A 4-by-8-foot teak table in the cockpit has a removable leaf in the middle that makes moving around the space easier, and the cockpit also has a bar with three stools, a sink, an Isotherm refrigerator and an ice-maker. A 40-inch TV (one of 11 on board) flips down from the overhead, transforming the space into an optimal place to watch the big game.

The salon has a markedly masculine feel, perhaps not surprising from a company with roots in sport fishing. Rich satin walnut with high-gloss walnut accents exudes a stately elegance and inviting warmth. Forward, a high-gloss walnut formal dining table for eight has a partition separating it from the country-kitchen-style galley, a sociable space with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and an island counter with stools. The 93’s formidable-looking lower visor hangs over a forward casual-dining table for six, and provides good lighting for the entire area. USB ports (a thoughtful detail) dot the galley, and a stainless-steel door to the port side deck is by Opacmare, the Italian components supplier to mega-yacht builders worldwide.

Another thoughtful design detail is on the side decks, where a toe kick allows for a foot of width below ankle level without reducing interior space in the salon.

The side decks lead to the foredeck, which has four stowage compartments and a recessed Lewmar windlass that’s accessible through a hatch, keeping the forward-most part of the bow open for entertaining. Though perhaps the key entertainment space on board is the semi-enclosed bridge deck, with a homey, man-cave-like forward portion dominated by a large, L-shaped couch to port.

Outside is a four-seat bar with a Kenyon grill and an Isotherm fridge. Lounge-style chairs can be set up on the after end of the deck for sunbathing.

My test boat was powered by twin 1,945 hp MTU diesels in a gleaming, cross-ventilated engine room with 7 feet of headroom, a Craftsman toolbox and twin 55 kW gensets. A centralized seawater system runs raw water throughout the boat, and access is excellent to the Side-Power hydraulic system for the bow and stern thrusters. The overall feel is one of efficiency, orderliness and, of course, power. Those big MTUs certainly aren’t fooling around.

Test day saw gray skies and confused 4-foot seas off the coast of South Jersey, thanks to the distant Hurricane José. They weren’t the best conditions for a leisurely cruise, but for a sea trial? Oh yes, very good indeed. The 93’s resin-infused, balsa-cored hull with a fine entry and 15.2 degrees of deadrise at the transom sliced right through the chopped-up whitecaps. I cruised her at 23 knots, and as I’ve come to expect from Vikings, she was as solid as she was quiet, landing all 214,685 pounds of her displacement in the troughs as softly as a mallard.

When I pushed the throttles all the way down, she got up to 26 knots, and I have to say, she may have run slightly better at full speed. It felt as if she got out over the tops of the waves even more — a pleasing, if not economically sound, endeavor. Her Viper fly-by-wire steering system with independently moving rudders lent a good deal of nimbleness too, as I slalomed through the Atlantic. I even took her hard over to port in a single boat length. As she completed her loop, I couldn’t help but think that for a yacht her size, she was ballerina-agile.

The Viking 93 Motor Yacht is lively and responsive, sleek on the outside while inviting on the inside. No surprise there: The combination is exactly how Viking climbed to the top of the sport-fish market, and it suits the brand in the motoryacht class too.
