Spirit 46 Main

Like many self-professed adrenaline junkies, Tina Felix doesn’t look like one. A lawyer by profession as well as a mother of four, at first glance she seems the very essence of those solid, grounded pursuits. Her “other side” was revealed early last fall on Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay, where a crisp northerly gusting toward 25 knots was coursing down the East Passage. Aboard Bamboozle , the Spirit 46 she owns with her spouse, Kevin, I was tagging along with the couple for the short but lively beat from Newport to Portsmouth.

We were two or perhaps three tacks into it, spray flying, clawing to windward at nearly 7 knots, when Tina suggested we shake out the single reef. The pumping breeze ever so slightly overpowered us, and the boat gained only a 10th or two of a knot. Tina seemed satisfied, though, and I completely understood why. With Bamboozle ‘s slim beam, low profile and long overhangs, she appeared above the waterline to be from a different era, but she was a wolf in sheep’s clothing: Thanks to a tall Southern Spars carbon rig, high-tech Quantum sails, the deep fin keel and ballast bulb, and a spade rudder, she tracked to weather as if possessed.

“Spirit is a pretty well-known brand in Europe and the United Kingdom, but this is our first foray into the United States,” the company’s founder, Sean McMillan, said last September while exhibiting Bamboozle at the Newport International Boat Show. “We started 17 years ago with the intention of building very beautiful, modern, classic boats. … The most significant thing was getting away from the long keel/keel-hung rudder configuration that all classics had. If you start with a ‘narrowish’ boat — but not uncomfortably narrow — with a firm turn in the bilge so it’s got good form stability and shallow rocker, you’re making a small hole in the water, with very efficient foils and a very efficient rig. You can’t really miss, frankly.”

What also separates Spirit from almost every other builder of traditional-style series yachts is the boats’ wood/epoxy construction. Like all Spirits, the 46 is built on laminated ring frames usually fashioned from Brazilian cedar, a strong, dark hardwood that looks like mahogany but at half the weight; the keelson is Oregon pine. The first layer of planking on the 46 is also Brazilian cedar (on bigger boats that are less weight sensitive, the choice is Douglas fir), and it’s glued to the ring frames to form a monocoque structure that’s then faired before a series of double-diagonal veneers are applied. The builders add a layer of glass/epoxy to stabilize the surface prior to the Awlgrip finish.

The deck is swept teak; the brightwork is highly varnished Brazilian mahogany. The keel is an SG steel foil to which a torpedo-shape lead ballast bulb is bolted. The stainless-steel rudderstock supports a finely tuned foam-cored carbon rudder. Custom hardware abounds. The attention to detail is staggering. The end result is irresistible.

Like most Spirit owners, the Felixes visited the yard as their boat, the 10th 46 to be built, came into existence before their eyes, an experience that McMillan strongly encourages. “They’re virtually custom boats,” he said. “You can have any interior you want. It’s not like buying one off the shelf. The owners have to work with us for a year or 15 months or more to create this thing, and that’s a big commitment. The more they come to visit, the better we can keep coming together to stay on exactly the same track they want.”

While McMillan said he’d delivered prior 46s with a variety of interior arrangements — an open floor plan, one cabin and two cabins — the Felixes chose a rather standard layout with a V-berth and head forward, a pair of opposing settees and dining table in the central salon, and the galley and navigation station, to port and starboard respectively, at the foot of the companionway. The joinery work is remarkable; the 46 is literally a yacht where one “takes the furniture” sailing. The one and only thing the boat lacks down below is a place to stand up; headroom is about 5 feet 2 inches.

To underscore the fact that the Felixes’ 46 is optimized for sailing and that they spend the majority of their time aboard topside, Bamboozle ‘s cockpit is two feet longer than those on her sister ships. She’s also the only Spirit to be tricked out with Harken hardware, which Kevin specifically requested.

Though our destination was dead upwind, once we were past the Newport bridge, we couldn’t resist the urge to bear away and ease the sheets, if only for a few moments. While we didn’t record the 21 knots of boat speed that another 46 notched during a race the previous year — many owners enjoy competing in the ever-growing Spirit of Tradition divisions at classic-yacht regattas — the knotmeter immediately ascended into double figures, topping off at nearly 11 knots. Unfortunately, too soon we hardened up, back on the breeze.

At my suggestion — I was interested to see what difference it would make, if any — we tucked the first reef back in and were able to lock in the mainsheet and forgo easing it in the puffs to luff the sail. The boat seemed a bit happier, her rudder a tad less loaded, and we gained a few more 10ths of speed, up to almost 7½ knots and tacking through 60 degrees. Despite the rather sporty weather, she was nearly dry on deck. Thanks to her light ends and a bit of flare to her bow, rather than plowing through the chop, she rose ever so slightly and gracefully up and over each passing wave. It felt like a curtsy. She appeared to be enjoying the outing as much as we were.

The best part of all, of course, was driving. Like an old 6-Meter or 8-Meter, Bamboozle was devoid of lifelines; not only were the sight lines forward clear and unobstructed, but the absence of railings also heightened the sensation of speed and one’s proximity to the water rushing by. To command a boat this long, lean and nimble, with a feathery-light tiller, was nothing less than pure joy.

Much too soon, the marina hove into view, so we threw in one last tack, luffed up, dropped the main and motored in. The boat is no slouch under power either, registering a solid 7 knots at 2500 rpm. Tying up was a letdown. Things became too quiet. Evidently, my adrenaline had been flowing too.

ON TEST: Spirit 44e – the sustainable future of sailing?

  • Theo Stocker
  • November 1, 2020

A wooden boat that blazes a trail for modern technology and sustainability sounds too good to be true. Theo Stocker went to see if the Spirit 44e is as good as promised

Product Overview

Spirit yacht 44cr electric.

  • Most sustainable yacht available today
  • Sails beautifully
  • Stunning looks
  • Limited accommodation for length
  • Upkeep of wooden boat

Manufacturers:

Price as reviewed:.

Boats have been built out of wood since Noah first put axe to tree, but when it comes to cutting-edge yachts, timber is right back at the top.

Spirit Yachts have been building head-turningly pretty wooden yachts with stiff, lightweight laminated wooden hulls since 1993, including the largest wooden yacht built in the UK since the 1930s in the shape of the Spirit 111 , launched this year.

But away from all the fanfare, the Ipswich-based yard has also just launched Avvento , smaller sister to its 47 and 55 Cruising Range yachts.

Far from being a lesser vessel, however, the Spirit 44 Cruising Range Electric Boat (44e for short) hides advances in sustainable technology under its gleaming topsides that offer a glimpse into the future of boat building.

Unrecyclable fibreglass and sails, toxic antifoul, and fossil-fuel propulsion are replaced by sustainably sourced timber, self-sufficient electric propulsion and zero-carbon emissions.

The proud new owner is Vincent Argiro, a retired technology entrepreneur who lives and sails in British Columbia in Canada.

Explaining his motivation to go for such a radical concept, he said: ‘My first sailboat was also the first of its kind to be built all-electric. I have never owned anything else, nor will I.

‘To me, it is a terrible corruption of the beauty and simplicity of sailing to add internal-combustion propulsion to it.’

spirit yacht price

She is built, Spirit claims, to last a hundred years and to be largely recyclable when the time does come. In the intervening century, she will burn no hydro-carbons whatsoever with not even a backup generator on board, or, for that matter, any obvious renewable energy sources. I was curious to see how she worked.

THE TEST VERDICT

The Spirit 44e is a fabulously expensive boat given her limited accommodation and shorter than average waterline length, if you are going to judge her by volume.

As managing director Nigel Stuart says: ‘You need to think about her volume relative to her waterline rather than overall length.’ That’s a nice idea, if you have the luxury of not worrying about marina fees.

spirit yacht price

You can get a lot of boat for this kind of budget, so why would you buy the Spirit 44e? Firstly, she is drop dead gorgeous. From her sleek lines to her dovetail joints, there is no part of the boat that is not a pleasure to look at.

Then, she is utterly engaging to sail. Lightweight, powerful and responsive, helming her will put a smile on your face, while she should cope equally well with the rough stuff. Finally, she is light years ahead of most production yachts in terms of environmental impact.

spirit yacht price

I would opt for the smaller rig and higher boom, and I’d like narrower cockpit seats. Most owners would opt for a backup diesel generator for peace of mind, though with new battery tech on its way, unlimited range is within reach.

The Spirit 44e goes a very long way to prove that yachts can be built and run in a sustainable way.

spirit yacht price

Would the Spirit 44e suit you and your crew?

This boat isn’t about mass-market appeal, but who wouldn’t fall in love given half a chance? In reality, for the kind of cruising most sailors really do, weekends and a few weeks here and there, she is luxuriously comfortable for a cruising couple with occasional guests. Liveaboard cruising is more of a stretch, but entirely feasible, while she’ll also do well racing round the cans.

There’s plenty of entertaining space, particularly on deck once you’re in harbour, and if you don’t mind the stares, she turns heads wherever she goes.

Very few boats out there could hold a hydrocarbon-free candle to the Spirit 44e. Even Noah might have been tempted to leave his animals for this boat.

Spirit Yachts 52D: This stripped-back racer is a wolf in sheep’s clothing

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 28, 2020

Oui Fling is a Spirit Yachts 52D, a stripped-out spirit of tradition racer custom built for Irvine Laidlaw for racing in the Solent

It may have been high season on the Solent, but among the eclectic mix of race boats both big and small, one yacht was turning more heads than any other. Spirit Yachts’ new 52D (D is for distilled), Oui Fling , is an out-and-out modern race boat concealed behind classic lines and a wooden structure, and takes the term ‘spirit of tradition’ to a whole new level.

Oui Fling belongs to Baron Laidlaw, a serial racing yacht owner with a fleet of yachts called Highland Fling , and a veteran of big boat and maxi events in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

Having bought a house on the Solent, however, Laidlaw decided that he wanted a yacht that he could campaign in both evening IRC racing out of Lymington and classic/spirit of tradition events. He was not interested in sailing a traditional classic, but an elegant yacht that his core pro crew could push hard around the course. He rang Spirit Yachts.

The foredeck is exceptionally clean. Note there are no stanchions or lifelines and no bow roller

After speaking with Spirit’s founder and designer Sean McMillan, Laidlaw flew to Ipswich last December to discuss ideas for a new race yacht. They settled on a 46-footer, which swiftly grew to 52ft (the same length as McMillan’s own Spirit, Flight of Ufford ).

An evening racer

Laidlaw’s current fleet includes 31ft, 52ft, 82ft and 115ft racing yachts. “I’ve got a lot of fast carbon boats so I thought it would be fun to do something different,” he told me as we headed out of the Lymington River on a particularly blustery Solent afternoon.

“I wanted to do the evening races, so I was limited by draught.” Laidlaw added that he wanted something pretty and had always considered Spirits attractive.

The result is this first flush-decked Spirit Yacht: a stripped-out wolf in sheep’s clothing. The Ipswich based yard has launched over 65 wood epoxy boats in 25 years, but Oui Fling is rather different than most.

“I enjoy the boatbuilding process,” said Laidlaw, candidly. “I enjoy the process of planning it, seeing it through – then how to make it go faster.”

The Spirit 52D was a fittingly bespoke project. Laidlaw specified a cockpit to suit his race-only crew, something much larger than the conventional keyhole shape used on most Spirit yachts.

Oui Fling also has separate cockpits for both the helmsman and tactician. Laidlaw only races his yachts and never spends the night on them; hence he didn’t require any home comforts or facilities below decks.

Oui Fling ’s build was fast-tracked. She launched just seven months after those initial discussions and, a week after arriving in her now homeport of Lymington, convincingly won her class in the Panerai British Classic Week.

“The drive was to make it the best racer within the spirit of tradition ethos,” said Spirit’s managing director, Nigel Stuart. Laidlaw’s initial plan for only racing her in the UK has now broadened to more spirit of tradition racing in the Med next year. Oui Fling is purposely small enough to be transported abroad by road.

Bespoke detailing

Oui Fling fascinates on many levels: the Spirit aesthetic is melded with the latest technology and modern influences. The closer you look, the more innovative the details that come into focus. And whereas the deck design is a study in racing ergonomics, below decks is a visual feast.

The joinery is compelling aboard any Spirit, but you can normally only see glimpses of the planking and frames – here the entire construction is left completely exposed.

McMillan drew the hull, using similar lines to his own Spirit 52, Flight , but with less buoyancy in the distinctly lighter new boat. The structure is still all in wood, using sapele ring frames and yellow cedar strip planking.

Two layers of kaya double diagonals were laid over this, before the whole hull was glassed. But there is also carbon hidden in the structure and deck in localised patches to stiffen certain load-bearing areas.

“There was a lot of input from people we don’t work with normally,” said Nigel Stuart. Composite specialist Graham Eeles in Brightlingsea laminated the keel fin and rudder blade using one-off CNC-built moulds.

Hall Spars, which has worked with Laidlaw in the past, constructed the high modulus carbon mast, while Dutch company Smart Rigging did the composite standing rigging. “There’s no point in doing it in-house if it’s not our skill set,” is Spirit’s philosophy.

“This was one of the fastest built boats we’ve ever done,” says Stuart. A lot of input, particularly with regards to getting the hardware and deck layout right, also came from Oui Fling ’s South African skipper and ex- Volvo Ocean Race bowman Mike Pammenter.

Weight was minimised wherever possible. The structure is in yellow cedar rather than Douglas fir, the keel and rudder are made of carbon fibre. Super B Lithium-ion batteries were selected for their high power-to-weight ratio.

Even the teak used is thinner than normal to keep the ballast ratio as high as possible. Elsewhere, the designers have replaced many metal fittings with soft padeyes and loops piggy-backing from deck padeyes.

The result is that Oui Fling launched at 6,954kg (with 3,250kg of that in her lead bulb). McMillan’s well-tuned Spirit 52 is nearly two tonnes heavier.

The extra-large cockpit has a clever self-draining design. When racing, the drains are shut, bringing the through-hull fittings flush to the hull, with water then led to a pump. Below the waterline all is reportedly perfectly faired.

Electric winches avoid the need for a coffee grinder or crew weight having to move to leeward. In fact the primaries are to be switched for winches with free spinning bases so the sheets can be cross-led to keep the weight up. Laidlaw is adamant that what you lose in rating with electric winches you gain in speed and weight optimisation.

The sail inventory is also impressive. Laidlaw has previously been a North Sails client, but as Spirit Yachts has long worked with John Parker at One Sails, Laidlaw decided to commission a full set of sails from both lofts to compare.

spirit-yachts-52d-oui-fling-electric-winch-controls-credit-paul-wyeth

The electric winch controls on the mainsheet pedestal can be reached by foot from the rail. Photo: Paul Wyeth

The One Sails set uses the latest 4T ‘naked’ membrane, a grand prix racing sail that has no Mylar film or taffeta protection. It makes for a good comparison with North’s 3Di Raw. The 4T is also the first official ‘green’ sail, as it can be recycled, which is in keeping with Spirit’s proactive views on using sustainable materials.

A Oui blast on the water

Unsurprisingly, Oui Fling is a little wet to sail. The owner and crew were keen to try the One Sails mainsail for the first time, so we went out a couple of hours earlier than the evening race.

With full main (there are no reef points) and No.3 jib hoisted in 26 knots of true wind, we soon had the equivalent of a near gale blowing across the deck while heading upwind. I quickly reached for a hiking handle, more for security than from any desire to contribute to righting moment.

spirit-yachts-52d-oui-fling-running-shot-tall-credit-paul-wyeth

Oui Fling is a Solent-based boat, so is set up for running both symmetrical spinnakers and A-sails. Her owner has a preference for eight in the sail numbers as it is regarded as a prosperous number in Asia. Photo: Paul Wyeth

We then had a fast and furious downwind blast under spinnaker, rolling along with boat speed in the low teens. The water passing off the transom was notably smooth and quiet.

Laidlaw uses a core of professional crew who race on his big boats. It was a pleasure to watch them work the boat like it was a large dinghy, but also to note how much they enjoyed sailing her. “We all prefer sailing this,” said skipper Mike Pammenter. “There are only ten of us aboard, so there’s a lot more to do.”

I asked if they missed the planing speeds of the big carbon yachts? “Speed is relative, because we’re sailing at the same speed as those around us. But coming into the bottom mark, there’s a lot more going on. I do the bow on the 82 and 115, where you clip the tack on and that’s it, whereas here it’s full-on!”

Irvine Laidlaw kindly gave me the helm long enough for me to report that Oui Fling sails handsomely. She has the lines and length to sail properly through the waves upwind, yet she is light enough and sufficiently tuned for very direct and finger-light control of her carbon rudder blade.

Given the choice, time and funds, I wonder how many of us would choose to race a wet boat in the Solent in our retirement years. Laidlaw is a real sailor and his latest yacht is perhaps the ultimate sailor’s toy for the UK.

“It’s something completely different to anything I’ve had before,” said Laidlaw. “I’m very pleased it’s very pretty, and I’m very pleased it’s fast.”

Highland flings

Sir Irvine Laidlaw (pictured above) took up sailing in his 30s as a distraction from building the first of his successful businesses, the conference service company IHR. He advertised in Yachting World for a boat share partner, and bought a Varne 27.

Five years later he became sole owner of a Westerly GK 29 called Gonna Katcha , which was swiftly followed by a new GK 34, the first Highland Fling , which Laidlaw sailed out of Hong Kong.

Invited to represent Hong Kong in the 1981 Admiral’s Cup, he was soon hooked by grand prix racing, and successfully campaigned a series of IOR yachts. Highland Fling 5 was his first of three Nautor Swans, followed by Farr 40s, IMS designs, a 12 metre, Wally 82 and a Reichel/Pugh 82, Highland Fling XII .

He also owns a variety of smaller boats, and a 98m motor superyacht .

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

spirit yacht price

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

spirit yacht price

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

spirit yacht price

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

spirit yacht price

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

spirit yacht price

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

SPIRIT YACHTS UNVEILS SPIRIT 111 SUPERYACHT

Water today.

This month, Spirit Yachts unveiled its highly anticipated 34m sailing yacht, the Spirit 111. With eco features throughout and a stand-out interior design, the sloop-rigged yacht is the largest single-masted wooden sailing yacht to be built in the UK since Shamrock V in the 1930s.

At the request of her overseas buyer, the Spirit 111 has been designed and built in-house by Spirit Yachts to be one of the most environmentally friendly sailing superyachts ever created.

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart commented, “Showcasing the Spirit 111 under sail and revealing her unique interior is a real milestone for the company. The yacht is incredibly complex in her design and engineering and we are very proud of what we have delivered. It’s been a challenging journey, which has given us the opportunity to innovate and gain insight for future superyacht and eco-focused builds.”

Spirit Yachts worked collaboratively with leading marine and automotive suppliers to deliver on the owner’s eco brief. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system using a 100kW motor will propel the yacht silently for up to 30nm at eight knots from battery power alone. Whilst sailing, the propulsion system will regenerate the four BMW lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft whilst the yacht is under sail. All power-consuming components have been carefully selected to be highly efficient and will use minimal energy without impacting performance or comfort.

Nigel Stuart explained: “It is important to the owner that he can spend the majority of his time away from marinas enjoying sailing and anchoring in bays. Using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days at anchor without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators. When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels.”

Nigel continued: “By partnering with suppliers and challenging ourselves to create customised solutions using the latest energy-saving technology, we have created one of the world’s most sustainable superyachts. From construction, using responsibly sourced timber to carbon-saving systems whilst in operation, the Spirit 111 sets a new standard for reducing the impact sailing has on our environment.”

The air conditioning uses variable speeds with eco options via battery or shore power and the galley has been designed with ultimate efficiency in mind. The fridge and freezer were built with Cryogel insulation to ensure minimal power consumption whilst holding low temperatures. Water is heated using a Webasto system, which only heats water on demand ensuring no wasted water or energy, and the heated water is stored within high density insulation and high efficiency transfer coils for rapid heat transfer and temperature retention.

The Spirit 111 is also one of few superyachts capable of cruising without professional crew. Energy efficient Lewmar hydraulic deck hardware and OneSails GBR (East) 4T FORTE™ sails made from materials that can be recycled are fitted to a Hall Spars carbon fibre mast and in-boom furling to facilitate short-handed sailing.

Spirit founder and head designer Sean McMillan commented: “A single-masted wooden yacht of this size that can be owner-driven is nothing less than a feat of engineering. The yacht’s impressive strength to weight ratio, a carbon rig and lightweight, performance sails will allow the owner to compete at regattas worldwide.”

The interior of the Spirit 111 was designed in partnership with Rhoades Young, which is Spirit Yachts’ first collaboration with an external design agency. Rhoades Young developed the initial concept for a unique, curved interior, which Spirit Yachts’ design team developed and brought to life in the final plans.

Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades commented: “It was a joy to work with a client with an absolute passion for design. The brief was a combination of his love for furniture and organic architecture. The client had recently visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and this was the catalyst for the idea of the warm soft flowing walls creating unique focal points within the room. Whilst appearing simple these twisting forms are co-ordinated perfectly with the beautiful skylights above creating a calm and tranquil ambiance. These elegant forms not only twist and peel to create counters but uniquely create the intimate back drops for the highly detailed ‘steam pieces’ which blur the line between furniture and sculpture. It has been an absolute privilege to work on this project with the client and the craftsmen and women who created it.”

Spirit Yachts head designer Sean McMillan commented: “The Spirit 111 has been completely customised throughout and as a result her interior is totally unique. The design is a never-ending swirl of organic shapes, encompassing the practicalities necessary in a yacht but in a highly imaginative way.”

The Spirit 111 owner’s representative, Marcus Wright, added: “It was a great privilege to represent the owner’s interests and ensure we delivered a yacht that surpassed his expectations. With the knowledge that Spirit Yachts can make absolutely anything in wood, it was a thoroughly enjoyable process to take Rhoades Young’s beautiful interpretation of an unusual brief and assist in the creation of such a work of art.”

Down below, walls and bulkheads flow in an ‘S’ shape through the interior, which has a natural look and feel thanks to the combination of the exposed Sipo, teak and American Walnut timbers on show. A bespoke, curved American Walnut seating arrangement takes centre stage in the open plan saloon-galley and C-shaped arrangements created from steamed timber curve over the beds in the owner’s and VIP cabins. Discreet doors with hidden, sensor-activated recesses, rather than visible door handles, ensure smooth lines and a contoured look throughout.

The smart lighting system onboard will complement the soft warmth of the wooden interior. Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart explained: “The interior has almost no light switches; motion sensors turn lights on and off during the day. At night, sensors under the beds detect if someone is up and light the way to the nearest ensuite. If a guest starts to go elsewhere within the interior, the system will deduce which way they are going and light the relevant areas in a very soft warm light.”

With no requirements for crew accommodation, guests have the choice of two double ensuite aft cabins or a starboard side double VIP cabin. The forward cabin holds the spacious master suite, complete with curved sofas built into the side of the hull, double bed and ensuite. All heads have rounded, solid timber sinks integrated into the worktop and power showers.

2 x 25kW DC generators as a back up to power. These operate at the peak efficiency and preferred load only.

Batteries charge by regeneration whilst sailing, via the generator or by shore power.

Lewmar hydraulic system

The Lewmar hydraulic system uses a Vortex reservoir to reduce the amount of oil in the system by 90%. By reducing the amount of oil, the Vortex delivers a weight saving of 53% compared to a traditional power pack, and saves the amount of oil required for servicing, lessening the impact on the environment.

The hydraulic power comes from a high voltage Torqeedo motor, and as a backup, a smaller low voltage DC Lewmar power pack.

The system has three modes, so that when sailing in Eco mode the yacht uses minimal battery power. The other two modes are Fast Cruise and Race.

Sails by OneSails GBR (East)

OneSails GBR (East) has supplied a wardrobe of high performance 4T FORTE™ three dimensional sails including a mainsail, jib, staysail, FFR flat furling reacher and a furling asymmetric.

OneSails’ 4T FORTE™ sails are currently the only EU certified recyclable sails on the market.

Air conditioning and hot water generation by Webasto

Air conditioning and air heating is managed by two Webasto variable speed units. These have been designed to operate in the most power efficient manner with three modes: Eco1, Eco 2 and Max.

The air conditioning is so efficient that the generators are not required to run overnight even in the tropical climates.

Hot water is provided by a Webasto 5kW boiler or using the residual heat from the generators and stored in a high density insulated tank fitted with finned tubing for rapid heat transfer.

Cryogel Refrigeration

Both fridge and freezer are custom units using CryoGel insulation along with super-efficient compressors.

Bespoke Furniture

The bespoke American Walnut seating and bed heads for the Spirit 111 were built by Will Fennell and Ben Jackson; both former employees of Spirit Yachts, who have teamed up with the company on this landmark project.

Designed and developed by Spirit Yachts, the two-part seating arrangement was made out of strips of 10mm x 10mm American Walnut and took over 2,000 man-hours to build by hand.
