A Parade Of Festive Illuminated Boats Will Set Sail On The SF Bay This Holiday Season

St. Francis Yacht Club's annual Lighted Boat Parade will take to the San Francisco Bay on December 15, 2023.

Dana Flynn

San Francisco’s annual Lighted Boat Parade returns this Friday, December 15th, at 6 pm. This beloved holiday event hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club dates back to 1994 and is a welcome sight along the waterfront every year.

A procession of about 2 dozen illuminated boats will set sail from Pier 39 around 6 pm and cruise along the waterfront to Crissy Field. Once they reach Crissy Field, the lighted boats will turn around and sail back to Pier 39. The lighted boat parade is a beloved tradition and great for enjoying holiday lights in a uniquely coastal way. The procession goes leisurely, taking about 2-3 hours. You can bring a picnic and watch the glowing boats for the evening. Just don’t forget some layers and a blanket to keep you warm.

st francis yacht club parking

The best viewing is along Pier 39, the parking lot east of St. Francis Yacht Club, the Marina Green, Crissy Field, and Aquatic Park. If you have a boat, then be sure to grab a front-row seat right on the water. The St. Francis Yacht Club is members-only, so the public has no viewing opportunities inside the yacht house.

If you miss the procession on the SF Bay, consider catching the San Mateo Holiday Lighted Boat Parade on Saturday, December 16, at 5 pm. The best viewing is along the berm in front of the Coyote Point Yacht Club. You can also check out Winter Fest in Sausalito, which hosts a boat parade on December 9 starting at 6 pm .\

About the St. Francis Yacht Club

The St. Francis Yacht Club began in 1927 as an offshoot of the San Francisco Yacht Club, which dates back to 1869 . In the 1920s, a debate emerged between its members about relocating the club to San Francisco from its original location in Sausalito. After all, this was pre-Golden Gate Bridge, and it was a long commute across the Bay.

The Marin County club members resisted the move, and the club eventually split into two groups : The San Francisco members started the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, and the Marin County members relocated the San Francisco Yacht Club to Belvedere. These days, the two clubs have a great relationship, and many members belong to both.

The St. Francis Yacht Club hosts the Rolex Big Boat Series every year, which is known as a premier regatta on the West Coast. The event happens every September, bringing hundreds of sailors to San Francisco.

Becoming St. Francis

St. Francis Yacht Club was founded in 1927 by a group of 21 San Francisco yachtsmen with a vision of a club in the City. It was an offshoot of the San Francisco Yacht Club, which was founded in 1856 and had its facility in Sausalito, across the Bay. That facility burned to the ground in the mid-twenties and a fierce debate raged after the fire between those who lived in Marin County and those who lived in San Francisco. The city-dwellers wanted to relocate to San Francisco—not surprising given that this was before the Golden Gate Bridge, so SF members had to travel by water to their club. Members from Marin found a suitable location in Belvedere against the wishes of their SF membership and pulled some fast and furious moves to secure the right number of votes to make it happen. This so offended the SF members that they chose to leave San Francisco Yacht Club and form their own club: the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Today, there is great camaraderie between the two clubs and many members belong to both.

Get Directions

Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and follow signs indicating Downtown San Francisco. Stay to the left and take the Marina exit; you’ll see the sign overhead. While you might be tempted to take a right at the first stop light (Lyon Street) and pull directly into the Palace of Fine Arts, pass the Lyon Street entrance and proceed straight on Marina Boulevard. Then:

  • Left on Jefferson Street
  • Left on Broderick Street
  • Left on Marina Boulevard, then immediately move into the right lane

  • Or continue on Marina onto Mason Street. The alternate parking lot will be on your left (see map). Please note that there is a walkway from this lot to the back of the main Theatre lot.

NOTE: Avoid bearing left on Marina Boulevard; that stretch of Marina Boulevard turns into an onramp for Highway 101 and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can then make your way back to the Palace of Fine Arts through the Presidio or retry the directions from above.

Cross the Bay Bridge. Follow the signs to the 9th Street exit. Stay in the right-hand lane. Go one block and turn right onto 9th Street. Stay in the left-hand lane. Immediately after Market Street, veer left onto Hayes Street. Then:

You can then make your way back to the Palace of Fine Arts through the Presidio, or use the directions “From the North Bay,” above.

St. Francis Sailing Foundation

October 12, 6 PM at the St. Francis Yacht Club

The importance of the Foundation’s mission comes to light when our grantees accomplish their own mission and goals. In 2023, the Foundation is supporting twenty-two Olympic hopefuls and we are excited to follow their progress throughout the year in important international events. Similarly, we are thrilled that many kids are continuing to have the opportunity to learn about sailing through the Treasure Island Sailing Center’s Set Sail Learn program, kids who most likely would not have had an opportunity to experience being in a boat on the San Francisco Bay, and other community programs that we support like Call of the Sea.

Events like our annual Auction go further than the important role of fund-raising; we want to inspire you to continue with your own sailing activities and get out on the water whenever you can. We hope you can join us on October 12!

If you are interested in becoming a larger supporter of this event, we have several sponsorship levels available. Click below for details:

The Pines Cocktails and Dinner for 12

Picture an intimate evening of food, wine and friends surrounded by the spectacular Pines Mansion in the scenic hills of Sausalito. This historic Victorian residence was built in 1888 by Major Orson C. Miller, who founded the Sausalito Land & Ferry Company. Current owners, Roxanne Sheridan and Gil Purcell, restored the 18-room Manor, preserving the classic Queen Anne architecture and stunning features such as the glass domed conservatory and sweeping, wooden spiral staircase. The dinner is preceded by a champagne tour of all four stories, rooms plus the exterior Widow’s Walk and its panoramic views of the San Francisco Skyline and Bay, revealing the myriad of mysteries and storied behind the Estate and its restoration. A 5-course gourmet meal, prepared on site by a professional chef, will be served at the fully appointed dining table of The Pines. Wines will be paired from the owner’s extensive private cellar to complement each course. The venue, the views, the food and wine all make for a most memorable evening, just ask anyone who has experienced The Pines Chef Dinner for 12. Priceless!

Pacific Seafaring Foundation Cruise and Lunch for 6

Following a lunch at the Yacht Club at Westpoint, the captain and crew await your party of six for a few hours of classic yachting as you tour the south bay on this 54’ Yawl, winner of the 2023 Stone Cup Trophy. In 1951 the OQV, a Philip Rhodes designed yawl, was built in Germany at Abeking & Rasmussen for Raymond M. Deméré. For over 60 years, she remained in the family and was used for ocean racing (the Buckner Race, the Light Ship Race, the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy Race, the Big Boat Series, etc.,), as well as many treasured family adventures. In 1954, she sailed from Savannah via the Panama Canal to the San Francisco Bay, which became her primary home. Over the years, the family shared many memorable OQV cruises in both the Sea of Cortez and British Columbia. When Mr. Raymond Deméré, Jr. passed away in 2012, OQV was sold to St. Francis Yacht Club Staff Commodore Dewey Hines, who had crewed on her in his teens! Dewey sailed and raced her regularly until his passing, when the Queen was donated and dedicated to charitable activities.

Ocean Queen V will set sail from the Westpoint Harbor in Redwood City on a mutually agreed date between December 2023 and June 2024. Enjoy a lovely lunch and a most unique and enjoyable sail in the South Bay.
