Zanzibar Sailing - Zanzibar Yacht Cruise Itinerary

Zanzibar Sailing cruise itinerary. 3, 5 and 7 night yacht charter cruises. Charter the best yachts in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Sailing Cruise | 7 nights / 8 Days

Zanzibar Sailing Adventures

The mere mention of the word Zanzibar evokes a sense of mystery and excitement, of pristine white beaches and colourful markets redolent with the heady aroma of spices that made these islands famous.

Whilst being a popular beach resort destination Zanzibar also offers some wonderful sailing holidays and yacht charters. Beautiful beaches, gin clear water with an average temperature in the high twenties, year round reliable trade winds all tied together by the incredibly warm Swahili culture makes this a must see destination.

Our Zanzibar Sailing cruise, stopping off at beautiful anchorages makes for an unforgettable adventure that allows you to delve back into the mists of time. A Zanzibar Sailing holiday is a journey of cultural and historical discovery.

The following is a guideline itinerary on what to expect on a Zanzibar sailing holiday. We prefer to keep things flexible to match our guest’s interests and requirements, the mood on the day and optimizing weather and conditions to create the best experience we can.

Longer charters are available to combine other areas such as Mafia and Pemba Island Archipelago.

Mnemba Island

Detailed Itinerary

Zanzibar sailing cruise | 7 nights / 8 days.

Day 1: Stone Town to Menai Bay We start with the guests boarding the vessel in Stone Town, a world heritage site recognised as the oldest Arabian city still functioning today. Depending on your arrival time. We may overnight on the yacht anchored off Stone Town beach or we head south to Menai Bay and Fumba Peninsular.

This southern region is famous for its resident dolphins on the southern point at Kisimkazi, where if you are lucky you will be able to swim with dolphins. Because you are living on a yacht we can go to places others can’t and can be with the dolphins long before or after other boats have to depart.

The Menai Bay region also has 10 different islands, islet’s and sand banks we can explore including, Murogo island, Pange Island, Chumbe Island, Ukombe Island, Tete Island, Kwale Island, Pamunda Island, Miwi Island, Niamembe Island, Pungume Island, as well a number of small unnamed islands, sand backs and atolls.

We will spend a couple days hear, exploring, fishing, snorkelling and relaxing with nights spent anchored off totally deserted beaches.

If you go onto google earth and explore the Menai Bay region you will get a good sense of the area.

Day 2 & 3: Menai Bay Conservation Area

Day 4: Mangwapani / Tambatu Island Mangwapani was a favourite hideaway for old time slavers trying to avoid the British anti-slavery fleet.

Today the site boasts two hotels and a pristine beach.

A short walk away is the cave that once housed those poor souls who were unfortunate enough to have been captured as slaves.

Tambatu Island, one of th few islands in the world where Voodoo is still practiced.

Just south of Tambatu is a wonderful sheltered bay that often has a pod of dolphins cavorting around it. It’s also a great place to explore on Kayaks.

Day 5: Kendwa and Ras Nungwi Kendwa is one of the world’s top beaches.  Kendwa also hosts the monthly full moon party, and if you like to party then this is one you don’t want to miss.

A short walk from Kendwa is Ras Nungwi, the northern most tip of Zanzibar. Here one can witness traditional dhows being built in a manner that has been unchanged for nearly a thousand years.  There is also a turtle sanctuary. Visitors can interact directly with these ancient creatures, as well as coming into close contact with a number of other interesting inhabitants of the island.

There is a good vibe here in the evenings with good beach front restaurants and beach bars with live music, so if you feel like heading a shore and enjoying the night life, you can.

Day 6: Mnemba Island A 2 hour sail away is Mnemba Island Coral Atoll, a spectacular coral atoll and private island situated a couple of miles off the north east point of the main island.

Mnemba offers world class diving and snorkelling and provides a secure anchorage for the night. The island itself is private with a luxury lodge so you can’t go ashore but the yacht can anchor here for the night.

It’s a piece of heaven and with the snorkelling reefs directly under the yacht, so you can literally just flop over the side of the yacht to see the fish.

Day 7:  Mnemba Island

We will spend the day at Mnemba Island atoll and depart mid-afternoon to return to Nungwi for your last night.  Go ashore have drinks at one or two beach bars, or perhaps dinner at a beach front restaurant, or just relax on board for the last night.

Or we will spend a 2nd night at Mnemba and leave early the next morning.

Day 8: Nungwi - End of Charter

Disembark in the morning at Nungwi Beach.

Transfer to the airport or your next destination.

When is the best time to go sailing in Zanzibar?

We have no set itinerary on our Z anzibar Catamaran Cruises, as we prefer to tailor make each experience based on the time of year, guests interests and conditions at the time. We are very flexible.

Depending on how much time you have, we focus on the West coast of Zanzibar. You will get to sail and explore the Menai Bay Conservation Area, in the far south of Zanzibar, Stone Town and the numerous islands, just off the coast of Stone Town and then further north to Kendwa, famous for its water sports and nightlife and then onwards to Tumbatu Island, Nungwi and the famous Mnemba Island.

Zanzibar Yacht Charter

Pemba Island Archipelago

For those with a few more days or a week to spend on charter, we can also include the Pemba Island Archipelago, 6-8 hours sail north of Zanzibar.

Pemba offers a remote private charter experience, where you are unlikely to see any other yachts or tourists!

Pemba Island Archipelago also offers a variety of different islands to explore and though it is similar in size to Zanzibar, it only has five island resorts on the whole islands… so you will have the place virtually to yourself!

We also can combine Zanzibar with Mafia Island Archipelago if guests have 7 to 10 days to charter, as Mafia is a 24-hour sail south of Zanzibar.

Sailing Zanzibar Island

How do Sailing Zanzibar Cruise Tours and Private Fishing Charter work?

You can simply put it this way. It is that Zanzibar boat excursion offered by professional fishers or captains that will take a group of guests out onto the blue surface of the Indian ocean water in hopes of catching fish. The yacht charter is rented to be used for the tailor-made trip aiming to fulfill your travel wishes.

What to expect during the Sailing Zanzibar Cruise Tours?

Are you excited about a moment of relaxation while sailing Zanzibar? If you’ve never been on a guided fishing tour or sailing cruise, it is normal to wonder what to expect during your tour. It is like any of our guided tours, your guide is your companion, and he will establish clear and consistent communication with you before and during the whole trip.

The good thing about this sailing tour is that it is a tailor-made one- designed for your team, and you have a chance to communicate with your captain your expectations. The whole boat tour isn’t about fishing. We will make sure that you just get the most effective experience possible on Zanzibar Island. The captain knows the best specific spots where they believe you’ll have the best things to see. He knows additional areas that can maximize your experience opportunities.

Sailing Zanzibar Cruise Tour

Although the private fishing charter seems an appealing experience, the actual fishing experience is what you create of it. The ocean breeze and warm sun are a top-up to this sailing Zanzibar tour experience. It creates a feeling of serenity that may make stay longer on the waters.

What to bring on our Private Fishing Charter- Sailing Zanzibar Cruise Tours?

Most of the items you will need during your sailing Zanzibar cruise are provided onboard except your personal items.  Fishing rods, reels, and tackle supplies are included in the package. If you want to bring your own stuff, you are free to do so. Water and snacks are provided on board. You are advised to wear comfy clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Don’t forget to wear light-colored clothing that will reflect the sun, absorb moisture off your body, and provide you with unrestricted mobility. We also recommend boat shoes.

What are the chances of catching a fish on a charter?

This is one of the questions asked when booking a fishing tour.  To put it simply, there is no guarantee you will catch a fish. All your captain will do is try his best to take you to the best spots where you can catch a fish. They don’t have control over nature. Fishing success can also depend on your skills, knowledge, and a bit of luck.  A first-timer may nearly always catch a fish or several species. Some of the spotted species are Striped Marlin, Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Short bill Spearfish, and Broadbill Swordfish.

Zanzibar Yacht Charters

Made up of fifty sun-drenched islands surrounded by brilliantly blue waters, Zanzibar is perfectly suited to luxury yacht charters. With stunningly beautiful coral reefs, dazzling white sand beaches and a profusion of exotic cultures, the archipelago presents a diverse array of cruising opportunities for discerning travellers looking to venture to waters rarely visited by superyachts.

Zanzibar luxury yacht charter guide A Tanzania yacht charter is likely to centre on the exquisite coastline of the mainland as well as exotic Zanzibar. This dreamy archipelago also goes by the name of the Spice Islands due to the wealth of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper harvested here for centuries. Its spice trade, in fact, boomed in the nineteenth century, attracting merchants from around the world. Nowadays, discerning travellers come here for lazy beach days, barefoot luxury and world-class diving sites.

Not many luxury yachts make it to this part of the planet, but this is part of its appeal. Travel here on a charter vacation and you won’t see another superyacht for days, plus you’ll be sure to have beaches and dive sites to yourself. Yet, this can be combined with visits to bustling UNESCO-listed towns, beach parties hosted by five-star resorts and superb culinary experiences.

Superyacht itineraries in Zanzibar Start your Zanzibar yacht charter on the Tanzania mainland or catch a private helicopter to the heart of the island chain. Spend time in Zanzibar city on main island Unguja before relaxing on beaches and discovering its underwater riches. For more seclusion, head to quieter gems such as Mafia Island, Pemba Island and Thanda Island and be wowed by their natural beauty and get-away-from-it-all allure.

Sailing a Dhow in Zanzibar

  • By Robert Beringer
  • Updated: January 21, 2021

Zanzibar: the very name evokes exotic images of sultans, spices and 18th century explorers. I was traveling in Africa with my brother Dan, and it was time for him to head back to California—but I couldn’t go home without a quick visit to Zanzibar, an archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. I was so close, and I doubted that I would ever sail there aboard my own boat. My guidebook talked about beaches, restaurants, hotels and history, but the photos of the traditional sailing craft were what really hooked me—somehow, I was going to sail a dhow.

The plane landed in the dark, and I was whisked off to a hotel in the heart of Zanzibar City, a crumbling collection of Arab- and Indian-inspired old buildings that remind one of Old Havana. My driver insisted on escorting me all the way to the hotel office; I later learned that this wasn’t because of crime, but rather that there are no street signs. He assumed (correctly) that I would have gotten hopelessly lost in the night.

The many people I met over the next few days on this mostly Muslim island were poor but kind, and delighted to exchange a few words of simple Swahili or English with a clueless foreigner. Jambo, habari? (hello, how are you?) is a great icebreaker.

For close to a millennium, the dhow was the primary mode of transportation for Zanzibaris, providing vital trade and establishing Zanzibar City as the hub of commerce between mainland Africa and the Middle East. The stout craft are constructed of mahogany, teak and whatever else is available; are usually between 30 and 40 feet long, with a draft of around 3 feet; and have a wooden Bimini over a poop deck with a low waist. There is only one small marina on the islands, so visiting yachts are rare and usually anchor out. Most of the dhows anchor offshore and back their sterns to the beach to load cargo and passengers.

I arranged a ride through Eco+Culture Tours, a local company that donates a portion of their profits to community-development initiatives. At the beach the next morning, I was introduced to Capt. Ahmed and his mate, Hafi, who welcomed me aboard Cima , and then they quickly prepared to get underway. Soon the Yamaha fired up, the grapnel was weighed, and we were off.

Once clear of the anchorage, the crew hung the rudder and tiller off the transom, released the ties on the long gaff of the lateen rig, and hit the engine kill switch. We were sailing now! I explained to Ahmed that I’m a sailor from the US, and his eyes lit up. “Would you like to steer the boat?” he asked.

“Yes, sir. I thought you’d never ask!” And he gladly handed over the tiller. It was the end of dry season, the winds were blowing gently from the south, and the boat tracked beautifully, cruising along at about 5 knots.

Most dhows carry only life jackets and an outboard engine. There were no modern navigational instruments, electronics or running lights. Sailing was by line of sight, and the bilge was emptied with a bucket. In short, the boat hasn’t changed much in 1,000 years.

We were bound for Changuu, aka Prison Island, once used as a detention center for rebellious slaves and then as a quarantine station for yellow fever. I enjoyed a sublime half-hour at the helm until it was time to bring her into the wind and drop the hook.

After a quick tour of the island, we were back on board for the return trip. The wind had veered, and I learned of the dhow’s primary shortcoming: the keelless boats don’t sail to weather. I asked Ahmed for a primer on tacking. “It’s much work,” he said, then went through an abstract explanation that I had difficulty grasping as he started up the outboard.

All too soon my time was up. Waiting for the airport taxi in Forodhani Gardens I took a last look out at the harbor and the timeless dhows drifting back and forth, grateful for my time here in this magical place.

Meet the traditional wooden boat-builders of Zanzibar

A traditional boat builder in Zanzibar

A traditional boat builder in Zanzibar

The Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar lies off the east coast of Africa, comprising two large islands and a series of smaller islets. The bigger of the islands is officially called Unguja, though it’s commonly known as Zanzibar . While crystal-clear waters lap its idyllic beaches, the island’s bustling trade centre is a diverse melting-pot of Swahili, Arab and Indian influences.

A traditional boat builder in Zanzibar

Around four kilometres from this bustling hub is the fishing village of Maruhubi, and a former sultan’s palace ; another must-see for anyone visiting the island. In the village, locals enjoy a traditional way of life, with the men crafting fishing boats by hand. London-based photographer Christopher Wilton-Steer recently found himself on this beautiful part of the island, having visited Zanzibar as part of a local assignment. “I'm fascinated by other cultures and interested in photography that educates, demystifies, and challenges perceptions”, he tells Lonely Planet. “Ultimately, I hope my work inspires others to take the road less travelled, and encounter new people, places and cultures.”

Zanzibar fishermen

Christopher was immediately enchanted by Zanzibar. “It’s a beautiful and culturally rich tropical island, with an unusual history that includes slavery, colonialism and revolution”, he says. Unguja and Pemba are home to an abundance of tropical fruits like mangoes, coconuts and breadfruit, as well as a great variety of spices like pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. The main town, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is home to an amazing collection of doorways. The people are super friendly.”

Traditional craftsman working on a boat

In Maruhubi, Christopher met and photographed some of the local fishermen. “I was amazed to see that the boats, even the big ones, were all hand-made”, he says. “They typically take about six months to construct, with between one and four people working on each boat using hand-driven drills, chisels and rustic mallets. They’re usually made from mango or mahogany wood, of which there’s an abundance in Zanzibar.” Did he take away any learnings from the villagers’ way of life? “I think we could all benefit from putting more energy into doing fewer things well.”

GIBRALTAR, MEETING NEW FRIENDS.

Read on to learn more about the voyage of laurent and bérangère, along with their two children, aboard their sailboat, zanzibar…, arriving in gibraltar, a crossroads between two very different continents.

Upon entering the bay, we were greeted by numerous dolphins, which, like us, zigzagged between the cargo ships. We dropped anchor at La Linea de la Conception (a Spanish town just above Gibraltar). The anchorage was far from a dream location, between the jet skis racing around us, the groaning of cargo ships in the background, the whiffs of fuel oil, planes taking off and landing right next to us, to say nothing of the invading mosquitos.

If we stopped here, it was neither for the beauty of the spot nor for this Spanish town.  We would like to visit Gibraltar, this English enclave at the southernmost tip of Spain and of Europe.  What’s more, we have promised the children to go see the monkeys that live at the top of the rock.

To enter the territory, we pass through border control.  We hear around us a sort of dialect, blending English and Spanish.

After crossing through the middle of the airport runway, which for want of space could not be built anywhere else, we headed toward the cable car that would take us up to the top of the rock.  Barely out of the cable car, we found ourselves nose-to-nose with a big baboon, which seemed amused by the incessant parade of tourists!

The panorama is impressive:  the city, with the Mediterranean on one side and the Strait of Gibraltar on the other, the Andalusian coastline and Morocco straight ahead!

The children, however, were much more impressed by the rather tame baboons, which have found out that tourists provide a permanent supply of all sorts of food that they can savagely steal.  Blanche hid behind our legs and Gabin asked to climb into the baby carrier.

Friendly encounters

We waited at the marina to meet them at the dock.  There was a warm welcome, like old friends meeting again after a long absence, despite not really knowing each other.  This is how we made the acquaintance of the crew of “Karemo:”  Olivier, Marine, Guilhem and Philippine, and of the crew of “Gaia,” Adrien, Marine and Lazelo.

The children were delighted to meet playmates and hurried to show their toys.  Meanwhile, we, the adults, took turns hosting gatherings over drinks, lunch or dinner.  The ambiance was festive, and all the more so because this meeting coincided with Laurent’s birthday, another reason to celebrate!

This meeting has been a wonderful moment for sharing and trading stories.  The children were proud to show one another what they knew how to do aboard the boat...

Laurent could not stop himself from doing some handiwork aboard the neighbouring boat and sharing his electronic navigation charts.  In exchange, we would receive a coastal guide of the Balearic Islands, as well as some advice on the most beautiful anchorages.  Thank you, friends!

Unfortunately, it is already time for us to leave, yet with the promise of seeing one another again soon in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde or the Antilles…”
