SILENT 80 3-Deck: On board SILENT-YACHTS’ most spacious catamaran to date
The future of yachting is here, and it's silent, spacious and energy-saving. SILENT-YACHTS, leader in luxury solar-powered vessels, is set to launch its revolutionary solar-electric flagship – the SILENT 80 3-Deck. With an LOA of 24.3-meters, and the yard’s most voluminous catamaran to date, this cutting-edge yacht is slated to make its debut this year, bringing a new era of responsible yachting to the world's waters.
“What sets the 80 Series apart is that it combines incredibly high levels of luxury and sustainability like no yacht ever before,” says Michael Kohler, founder and CEO of SILENT-YACHTS. “With bespoke design by Marco Casali and 26 kWp produced by the state-of-the-art solar array, there is ample energy to enjoy all the luxurious amenities on board with zero emission.”
Open or closed: Taking customisation to the next level
With the SILENT 80 3-Deck, prospective owners can choose between the 80+-square-metre open or closed fly deck versions. Described as “the defining feature of the yacht” by Kohler, this allows the owner to tailor their onboard experience to their personal preferences.
The open version offers a sprawling 84-square-metre ocean sky lounge on the fly deck, for those who prefer being outdoors with a closer connection to the sea. For those who value privacy and panoramic views, the closed version provides two options. The first option boasts an owner's suite with a staggering 360-degree view and an expansive 41-square-metre private terrace aft. On the other hand, the lounge version is ideal for those who cherish shared experiences on board. It replaces the owner's suite with a generous 39-square-metre dining area, complete with a bar and galley, while maintaining the same aft terrace.
Maximised onboard space
When compared to other catamarans in this size bracket, the SILENT 80 3-Deck has a strategic approach to maximise onboard space without compromising comfort or aesthetics. The boat offers ample storage for water toys beneath the cockpit, enhancing the overall functionality and recreational opportunities of the vessel and making it a dream for watersports enthusiasts.
“In the aft portside hull, the staircase can be raised to reveal a fully enclosed tender garage with a lift and launching system,” Kohler adds. “It fits tenders with a maximum length of 5.2 metres and has a direct charging point to recharge electric SILENT tenders.”
Strategic design: Beauty meets efficiency
The SILENT 80 3-Deck's design is a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality. The signature window strip running across each hull adds a touch of streamlined elegance to the yacht, a departure from the traditional bulky appearance of many catamarans. Esteemed interior and exterior designer Marco Casali deserves praise for his exceptional work in maximising solar panel coverage while maintaining an elegant and captivating shape. The result is a yacht that not only turns heads but also harnesses the power of the sun to propel you through the water with ease.
“The biggest challenge was to create a design that is visually appealing but also captures as much solar energy as possible,” Kohler explains. “As the solar array of course needs space, it still needs to integrate into the overall visual design language of a yacht in a beautiful manner.”
A solar-powered era of yachting
SILENT-YACHTS is at the forefront of ecological yachting, and the SILENT 80 3-Deck is a testament to its commitment to more sustainable solutions. With cruising speeds of 6-8 knots, the yacht's solar-powered energy system harnesses the sun's rays to generate silent, emission-free propulsion, offering unparalleled efficiency and a virtually maintenance-free experience.
Kohler highlights the importance of producing a yacht that is not only a pleasure to look at, but also very efficient. “All our yachts are required to be highly efficient in order to consume as little energy as possible while providing all the luxuries on board,” he says. “In order to achieve this favourable energy surplus, all onboard appliances need to be highly efficient, and the overall weight of the yacht must remain as low as possible to minimise the energy required for propulsion.”
The 25-year warranty on the solar panels underlines the shipyard's confidence in its green innovation and guarantees uninterrupted, eco-conscious cruising for years to come.

Meet the Silent 80 Tri-Deck
- By Yachting Staff
- Updated: December 2, 2019
Silent-Yachts has unveiled the design for its Silent 80 Tri-Deck, a solar-electric catamaran with a projected top speed of 16 knots.
This yacht is a variation on the builder’s existing 80-foot flagship, adding an air-conditioned lounge on the flybridge.
Owners have choices in the layout aboard the Silent 80 Tri-Deck. The yacht can be ordered with four to six staterooms, with an enclosed or open top deck, and with a customizable garage.
Because the yacht uses solar power, it has more garage space as opposed to engine-room space. The vessel can carry a nearly 15-foot tender, an amphibious car or any number of combinations of water toys.
What is the Silent 80 Tri-Deck’s cruising speed? 6 to 12 knots, with a top-end speed of 16 knots.

History of Silent Yachts
Silent Yachts, an innovative company known for pioneering the future of maritime navigation, was founded in 2005 by Michael and Heike Köhler in Austria. Michael, an avid lifelong sailor with a passion for sustainable energy sources, and Heike, a travel enthusiast and frequent voyage partner, sought a solution to issues of noise, smell, and fuel consumption that traditional sailing presented. Their belief that maritime travel could be both luxuriously comfortable and environmentally responsible led to the creation of Silent Yachts, a brand known globally today for their solar electric catamarans.Over the years, Silent Yachts has established itself as a frontrunner in the industry with multiple award-winning designs. Their game-changing approach to maritime travel utilises disruptive technology with cutting-edge naval architecture to produce vessels ranging from 55 feet to a recently launched 80 feet model. The company's boats are powered by solar energy, stored in batteries aboard, which makes their operations virtually silent, self-sufficient, and virtually maintenance-free, thus reinforcing their commitment to sustainability.Today, Silent Yachts is widely recognised globally with its headquarters still based in Austria, although their vessels are now built in Italy and Thailand, responding to the growing demand in those regions. Apart from these locales, Silent Yachts has extended its business footprint with sales offices in USA and Singapore and sales agents in over a dozen countries worldwide. The brand’s distinctive commitment to luxurious and sustainable maritime navigation continues to push boundaries, with plans to spearhead even more significant innovations in the future.

Silent Yachts is quietly establishing itself as a major player in the marine game. The Austrian-based builder, whose solar-powered fleet continues to grow apace, has just sold the first three Silent 80 Tri-Deck catamarans for roughly $6.7 million apiece.
As its moniker implies, this particular model is a triple-deck take on the yard’s flagship Silent 80 and is billed as Silent’s most spacious solar-electric cat to date. Designed and engineered by Marco Casali and MICAD, the multihull sports clean, straight lines, expansive windows and a distinctive flybridge that’s fitted with horizontal air grills inspired by supercars. Silent says this adds sportiness to the overall look.

The 80-footer is also equipped with an additional 970-square-foot deck that sets it apart from its predecessor. This space can be set up as an open-air sky lounge (open version) or enclosed and used as an owner’s suite, lounge or studio (closed version). Among the three sold, there are both open and closed versions and the latter will have a master cabin in the top deck.
The open model. Silent Yachts
Elsewhere onboard, the main deck offers a generous main saloon that spans more than 640 square feet, along with a galley, lounge and dining area. The lower deck, meanwhile, can accommodate four to six guest cabins and one to two crew cabins depending on the owner’s preferences.
Outside, the aft and forward decks feature sofas and sun pads for al fresco relaxation. Since there’s no big engine room hogging space, Silent claims the cat is fitted with the largest garage in its class. The vessel can hold a 17-foot tender, along with an integrated lift and launching system. The hydraulic swim platform could also potentially store a gyrocopter on floats.
One of the vessel’s biggest drawcards is its eco-friendly edge. It’s predominantly decorated with recyclable materials that are stylish yet sustainable. It’s also equipped with 70 solar panels on the roof of the flybridge that generate 26kWp of power. The green energy is then stored in lithium batteries to power the onboard amenities and enable the vessel to cruise at night.
The closed model. Silent Yachts
Speaking of cruising, the catamaran is fitted with a pair of powerful electric engines that offer up to 340 kW each in the most advanced version and give the vessel a max speed of 20 knots and a range of up to 100 miles per day. That means you can sail silently sans emissions to pretty much anywhere you please without consuming fuel. (The vessel also comes with a generator if you’re in a pinch.)
“We are happy that the interest in fully sustainable yachting keeps growing,” Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent Yachts, said in a statement. “Our latest orders are another confirmation of this trend for a much greener future.”
Indeed, the shipyard is currently developing an even bigger model and will release more information this year. It’s also partnered with Volkswagen to install the same electric powertrains currently used in VW’s ID.3 and ID.4 in an array of ocean-going multihulls. Like we said, major player.

Silent Yachts – Noiseless Limitless Cruising Catamarans
Solar power catamarans...ingenious and real.
Imagine leaving no footprint except those in the sand on faraway beaches as you silently cruise. With these solar catamarans, it’s possible! We covered these amazing solar-electric yachts back when they were mere concepts.
The Austrian-based solar catamaran producer drew stronger interest after the Silent 55 earned the Best of Boats Awards 2019 in “Boat for Travel” being “suitable for long distance travels with all amendments to live on board permanently, adapted for both inland waters and the tough conditions at sea.” Amazing results for where electric-solar catamarans were only a year or so before.
Silent Yachts began delivery of the Silent 55 in 2019 and in 2020, during a global pandemic, sold six Silent 80 catamarans (starting from $4.6 million). Construction in Ancona, Italy, was slightly delayed due to COVID19 closure of 2 of the 4 factories, but the shipbuilder continues with delivery of these amazing catamarans as well as their evolution. At the end of 2020, Silent Yachts had a dozen luxury electric catamarans in production from 55′ to 80′ at a starting price of $1.8 million.
After these successes, designer Marco Casali of Too-Design continued innovating crafting a Loft version of the Silent 80 to excite solar catamaran enthusiasts.
Founder and CEO, Michael Köhler, birthed the concept. Interior and exterior designs are by Marco Casali of Too-Design with Amedeo Migali of MICAD in charge of naval architecture.
The Silent 80 with its silent electric propulsion, has unlimited range; no noise or fumes. Seventy solar panels, electric motors, and lithium batteries (used by Tesla) have been incorporated into the design to make it most efficient while maintaining the overall balance in shape. If you want to know more in depth on this efficiency, read this excellent article on Silent Yachts’ engine, battery configuration, and power management .
All components are virtually free of maintenance which makes the running-costs much lower than that of a comparable conventionally powered catamaran. The Silent Yacht is powered by electric motors and has a cruising-speed of 6-8 knots, and maximum speed is 10 knots. Without an engine room, the Silent 80 has enough space for a 4.5 meter tender, and gyrocopter!
Success has not stopped this solar catamaran designer from striving for bigger and better ideas. Recently Silent Yachts Silent announced its plan to build catamarans in collaboration with Volkswagen, powered by VW electric drive matrix (MEB). The catamaran ranges will be designed by VW subsidiary, SEAT’s Cupra brand. Auto and marine manufacturers joining forces have shown success before when BMW teamed up with Torqeedo for outboard engines, so it will be interesting to watch.
High Cost of Solar Catamarans Debunked
As with any new paradigm, the skeptics have loud voices during early introduction of new concepts. And solar-electric catamarans are no different. As excited as we are about this, we must confess our healthy skepticism is still alive. But we recently read an interesting article that compares the Silent 80 to the Lagoon Seventy8 . It points out that because operation and maintenance costs are so low that only a few years of ownership negate the higher purchase price of the Silent 80.
It’s actually quite a tempting proposition to enjoy all the comforts and necessities that requires lots of power aboard without the smell, roar, and Earth-damaging emissions of diesel generators. And eliminating the dangers and inconvenient refills of the propane cooker in the galley is another reason to give a second and a third look at these new solar catamarans.
Read on for pictures and more details of these solar-powered cats with lots of options including hybrid diesel operations and and a true “sail” option.

Silent 80 Tri-Deck in Demand
Austrian-owned Silent-Yachts has sold three units of its flagship Silent 80 Tri-Deck, while the first Silent 60 is close to launching in Thailand.
Silent-Yachts has confirmed the sale of the first three units of Silent 80 Tri-Deck, its most spacious solar-electric catamaran to date. The 79ft 9in (24.3m) model is an advanced version of the Silent 80 and the first three sales include a mix of both Open and Closed versions.
The first unit is a Closed version with the top deck used for the master suite, although the interior area of future units can be used as a sky lounge or other layouts. The Open version has 90sqm of covered living area. The top deck features solar panels forward and on the hardtop.
Designed and engineered by Marco Casali and MICAD, the Silent 80 Tri-Deck has a base price of €5.51 million (about US$6,700,000).
Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, said: “We are happy that the interest in fully sustainable yachting keeps growing. Our latest orders are another confirmation of this trend for a much greener future.”
The main deck benefits from a 35ft 10in (10.95m) beam and has a 60sqm saloon with a galley, lounge and dining area. The main deck’s exterior space covers 120sqm and includes an aft cockpit with a lounge area and a bar, while the solid foredeck has a sofa, sunpads, tables and open space.
The lower deck is fitted with four to six guest cabins with double or twin berths and ensuite bathrooms, as well as one or two crew cabins. Semi-custom layouts are available. Following Silent-Yachts’ focus on being green and eco-friendly, the yacht is principally decorated with lightweight, recyclable and environmentally-friendly materials.
The solar-powered yacht has a large garage, taking advantage of the absence of a typical engine room. On port side, there is enough space for a 5.2m tender with an integrated lift and launching system or an amphibious vehicle. A gyrocopter on floats could potentially be placed on the hydraulic bathing platform.
The yacht is built using vacuum-bagged resin infusion to create a lightweight carbon-sandwich composite construction that has sound-and temperature-insulating qualities.
Like all models by Silent-Yachts, the Silent 80 Tri-Deck is self-sufficient, virtually maintenance-free and uses silent electric propulsion for unlimited range without noise or fumes and minimal vibration.
The options for electric engines range from 150kW each in the standard version up to 340kW each combined with high-efficiency carbon propellers. The model will be able to reach up to 20 knots with the most powerful e-motors combination and make up to 100nm a day at cruising speed without consuming any fuel.
As with every Silent yacht, the 80 Tri-Deck is equipped with SunPower solar panels that produce up to 26kWp. The yacht uses maximum power point tracking (MPPT) solar charge regulators and high-end lithium batteries from Panasonic, which provide capacity for all-night cruising, while the inverter available with up to 50kW provides power for all household appliances.
The energy production and propulsion systems require hardly any maintenance and produce no fumes or noise. Because of that, the operational costs of the vessels are substantially lower, compared to power yachts using traditional propulsion systems.
The Silent 80 Tri-Deck has a generator, which can be used to recharge the batteries in the rare case when higher speed is required for longer periods or if the weather is bad for several days.
The shipyard is currently developing an even bigger model and plans to release more information on this project later this year.
Meanwhile, the builder has revealed an image of the first Silent 60 outside the shed of the PMG Shipyard near Pattaya in Thailand. Following final installations, the yacht is expected to be launched into the water, with sea trials to follow. www.silent-yachts.com
SILENT RESORTS TAKES FIRST STEPS Building on the solar technology developed for Silent-Yachts catamarans, Silent Resorts is launching its first yacht-and-villa retreat in the Caribbean, while Asia is in the plans as the new company looks to grow a global network of exclusive, eco-friendly holiday destinations.
