Reina Boats Houseyacht

“Houseyachts” will be the next big trend in marine—if Reina Boats has anything to say about it, that is. The nascent U.S. outfit is launching a new line of vessels this fall that can serve as both yachts and luxury homes.

The pair didn’t just duplicate the “outdated” floating homes of the past, though. They set about designing a sleek vessel that would appeal to a new wave of discerning yachters.

Reina Boats Houseyacht

“The existing houseboats were stuck in the design of the 1980s, and almost 90 percent of the houseboats on the water were commercially rented vessels,” Günal said. “They were boats that yacht and catamaran owners would never consider buying.”

The line includes five models that run the gamut from a utilitarian “floating RV” to a lavish two-story overwater condo. Ranging from 26 to 60 feet, the fleet members pair upscale decor and high-quality furniture with top-tier appliances and smart-home technology.

Reina’s houseboats aren’t restricted to lakes and canals, either. The fleet has met the U.S. Coast Guard standards and can take to the open seas. Crafted from marine-grade aluminum, the vessels have a similar hull design to a catamaran and should be as equally sturdy. Each one is powered by the latest generation of Mercury outboards that are reportedly greener than other conventional engines.

“They are fuel-efficient, remarkably quiet, and operate smoothly,” Günal adds. “They also are certified with an Ultra Low Emissions rating from the California Air Resources Board (CARB).”

On top of that, seafarers can choose batteries as an alternative power source instead of a generator to further reduce emissions.

The story behind Benetti: The House of Yachting

As one of the oldest shipyards in the world, Benetti describes itself as The House of Yachting to encapsulate its 150 years of history, experience, tradition, and knowledge. Benetti’s legacy includes some of the world’s most recognisable yachts, including Spectre , Freedom (ex: Reverie ) and Soundwave (ex: 11.11) , that have been created by leading designers, such as Giorgio Cassetta and Stefano Natucci.

“The House of Yachting should not be understood as a proper brand per sé,” says Marco Valle, the Azimut | Benetti Group’s CEO. “It is a way of describing the shipyard which contains a promise to its clients and partners. Benetti has such a presence in the yachting industry because it is The House of Yachting, and that is what has allowed the shipyard to develop such a unique and valuable offering.”

Founded in 1873

Benetti’s impact on the superyacht sector is monumental, with 362 yachts measuring over 24 metres delivered to date according to BOATPro. One yacht that proved to be a huge turning point for the brand was the 86-metre Nabila. The largest and most extravagant superyacht on the water when she was launched in 1980 she set new standards in the sector. The build ultimately led to financial trouble for the build, but this then opened the door for Paolo Vitelli to purchase the brand.

Now more than 40 years later, this milestone has been followed by a myriad of modern-day successes, which have all contributed to Azimut | Benetti Group’s status as the world’s most extensive yacht and megayacht network.

In 2016, Benetti took a bold initiative to create a building hub dedicated to the construction of yachts over 80 meters. From this shed came the likes of the 107-metre Luminosity , 107-metre Lana and 108-metre IJE – the trio of yachts delivered in 100 days in 2020 that broke Benetti’s 100-metre barrier and set a new record for the industry.

More recently, the Benetti B.Yond 37M established itself as the greenest model in its class. The technologically forward and revolutionary semi-custom design features four decks and a steel hull powered by a hybrid system.

Not just a builder

While expanding its portfolio, Benetti accrued the knowledge and ability to meet increasingly innovative and demanding orders. Time and time again, the yard delivers on its highly-engineered naval platform with beautiful finishes, future-proof decor and technology – all of which benefits from Benetti’s rich history, experience and heritage.

“Benetti is not just tradition, it is also continuous innovation, a constant effort to put its deep knowledge at play to anticipate the desires of its owners and the latest trends on the market,” explains Valle. “The House of Yachting’s purpose is to set Benetti’s all-encompassing standard as a benchmark in the global luxury yachting scene.”

Another contributor to The House of Yachting’s high standards is the yard’s cooperation with brilliant architects and designers. Since the 1980s, Benetti saw a rising evolution in size and complexity of the yachts, which demanded input and expertise from the likes of Sinot Yacht Design, Bannenberg & Rowell Design, RWD, Cor D. Rover, Bonetti/Kozersky and Studio Lazzarini Pickering. As a result, Benetti was able to become one of the most versatile and innovative builders that delivered on design and functionality in a uniquely recognisable style.

Benetti’s Order Book

Today, Benetti reports a full order book until 2027, filled with a variety of custom builds and yachts from its five-category fleet: Class, B.Yond, Oasis and B.NOW. With 58 upcoming superyacht deliveries recorded on BOATPro, Benetti’s two sites in Viareggio and Livorno are working non-stop.

“There are more than 200 suppliers in our supply chain, and we have developed a relationship of value and trust with each one of them,” explains Valle. “We involve our partners in all of our future projects so that we can keep growing together.”

A superyacht ordered with Benetti can take up to five years to be completed. For Benetti owners, the wait is nothing short of worthwhile. “Our owners are lovers of beauty, deep connoisseurs of aesthetics and art, with very clear ideas about the design and technologies they want on board and are therefore willing to wait longer to have their Benetti yacht,” explains Valle.

“They identify with our values and know that we can guarantee them very high-quality standards. They know that Benetti is able to respond to any of their wishes because we guarantee thorough control over every phase of the project – from design to the realisation of every smallest detail – following them step by step at every stage, including after sales.”

Nautical success

The Azimut | Benetti Group is the world’s largest superyacht builder by total length of yachts under construction in BOAT International’s Global Order Book , and has been since 1999. The secret to this success? “We do really believe that one of the reasons for our success as The House of Yachting lies in our origins,” says Valle. “Benetti has its roots in Tuscany, in what is still today one of the main hubs of the yachting industry, while at the same time being the cradle of art.”

“Being this close to cities such as Florence, Pisa, and Siena, just to mention a few, has certainly influenced the development of this concept of elegant beauty that we want to embody in our yachts and that our owners have come to appreciate and recognise,” he adds.

Houseboats Get A New, Modern Upgrade As 'HouseYachts'

Boat maker reina boats is betting that “houseyachts” will become the next big thing..

Reina Hotel M32

Houseboats were very popular. From people that actually used them as their full- time residence to families on vacation, it was sort of cool to actually reside on the water. But as the years went on they started to look and feel… old. One company is trying to bring houseboats into the 21st Century by reinventing them entirely. Robb Report highlights how one boating company has come up with ‘houseyachts.’

Related Content

Reina Boats has come up with a complete line of “houseyachts ”. In a statement , company founders Hayri Dayi and Emin Günal said that they came up with the idea of “houseyachts” during the pandemic after seeing a need for something that was spacious and stylish enough to live in that wasn’t still stuck in the past like houseboats of yore.

Many boats do not have the living space to provide all the accommodations and comforts people want. Power catamarans offer more volume but also have become quite expensive. That left houseboats as the only option,” Günal said. In researching the U.S. houseboat market, however, Günal and Dayi realized that the vessel designs largely were outdated. “The existing houseboats were stuck in the design of the 1980s, and almost 90 percent of the houseboats on the water were commercially rented vessels. They were boats that yacht and catamaran owners would never consider buying,” Günal said.

So the duo set about designing vessels that would be modern and appealing and surprisingly, something that wouldn’t “cost a mint.”

Reina Mini T4

Reina’s lineup consists of five models. At the bottom for those that dont need much space, you can go for something like the Reina Mini T4 , described as a “compact floating luxury home.” You get things like hardwood floors, deck area, private bathroom, living room and full kitchen in 24 feet of vessel.

Reina Live L44DR

If you want to go all out you can go for the Reina Live L44DR. The largest “houseyacht” model Reina offers, its a full two story floating condo.

Living area of the Reina Live L44 DR

Technically there are  two bedrooms, but those are made up of one huge master bedroom that splits into two and has enough room for five people; there’s a bathroom and shower and a c-shaped wraparound kitchen. Each model is equipped with the latest in smart home tech and high end appliances.

When its time to move these things, Reina says the ships meet U.S. Coast Guard standards, so they can float in any body of water, from lakes to the open ocean. They’re also described as green and fuel efficient, with engines that are rated as ultra low emissions from CARB (California Air Resources Board). They can also be equipped with batteries instead of on board generators if owners want to go greener.

Reina Boats plans to build its line of “houseyachts” in Turkey with the first model set to make its debut at Fort Lauderdale’s International Boat Show in October. Reina also isn’t talking pricing yet. Don’t count on them being cheap, but don’t count on them costing as much as a regular yacht either.

The Guide to Floating Homes and Houseboats

Here's what you need to know about foregoing life on land for a house that floats.

The Guide to Floating Homes

Floating houses are frequently sold along with their slip, and in many ways sell like a typical house.

Waterfront property certainly has its appeal. Access to the river, lake or ocean can provide endless enjoyment, especially if you're a person who likes getting out on the water. But have you considered living on the water itself?

There are a few options for making your next home on a boat or along a dock, from houseboats to a yacht or sailboat to a more permanently fixed floating house. Here's what you need to know before buying a floating home or houseboat.

What Is a Floating House?

A floating home is most often used to describe a house on the water that doesn't have a motor or navigation system, commonly docked among other floating homes. The hull is often made of concrete. Because they're not mobile under their own power, floating homes typically stay in one place long term and are permanently attached to electrical, water and sewer lines.

Floating homes "essentially are barges that houses are built into," says Scott Collins, who serves as public relations co-chair with his partner, Arleen Ma, for Floating Homes Association Inc. in Sausalito, California. The association located in Richardson Bay, which is north of San Francisco , is made up of a community of roughly 400 floating homes.

What Is a Houseboat?

Houseboats often have a more house-like look than a sailboat or yacht, with a rectangular structure to maximize space indoors. The hull is more often made of fiberglass, steel or aluminum, and the motor and navigation systems mean a houseboat can travel on its own and be hooked up to side systems in a marina slip for access to power and water.

However, you're less likely to use a houseboat for day trips down the river or out onto the lake. Bill Drage, principal owner of houseboat manufacturing company East Coast Houseboats, says that most of his clients plan to keep their houseboat dockside at all times.

The size and shape of a houseboat makes it harder to direct than a yacht or sailboat – Drage says one client "said it was like moving a refrigerator across the water."

Other Boats as Residences

If you prefer the look of a more traditional boat to a houseboat or floating home, you can choose to live on just about anything you can afford as long as it's comfortable. Yachts, trawlers and some sailboats have enough space to live below deck.

If you're living on a powered boat or boathouse and primarily staying in a marina where you have a slip, know the marina's rules before claiming your boat as your permanent residence. Some marinas have a maximum number of nights allowed on board, while others are more amenable to full-time residents.

How to Buy a Floating Home or Houseboat

Floating homes are frequently sold along with their slip, and in many ways sell like a typical house. Real estate agents will list the property on the market like they would any home on land. In cities where floating house communities are established, you can often find floating home listings on Zillow, realtor.com or other consumer-facing real estate information sites.

However, a floating home cannot be purchased with a traditional mortgage . Floating home loans do exist and are more commonly offered by local banks and credit unions where floating home communities exist than a national bank or lender. Houseboat manufacturers, floating home builders and floating home communities can be a helpful resource for researching your loan options.

Financing a houseboat is the same as financing any other kind of boat, and it is considered a personal property loan.

If you're looking for a houseboat or another type of boat you can convert into your new home, websites for boat sales, houseboat and boat manufacturers and boat dealers are the best places to go.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy a Floating House or Houseboat?

Like with buying a house, floating homes and houseboats vary widely in cost to buy one. For a new houseboat from East Coast Houseboats, Drage says the range starts with a one-bedroom, 22-foot houseboat that starts under $90,000. At the higher end of the spectrum, a two-story houseboat that's 50 feet long and 16 feet wide goes for around $350,000.

Existing floating homes and houseboats on the market can be less than $100,000 and reach $1 million, depending on size, style, condition and location. If a slip comes included, you can naturally expect to pay more.

Floating Houses Have Additional Fees

Don't forget to factor in the monthly cost of keeping a slip or berth on the dock. Collins and Ma report berth fees to be a part of the Floating Homes Association in Richardson Bay can be hefty. "They can be expensive – they're over $1,000 a month. But the property taxes are not set up on the land, only on the dwelling. So your property taxes are less, but your berth fee is more," Collins says.

If you're living in a marina that isn't an established residential community, you may not be required to pay property taxes at all. Be sure to inquire with the marina as you calculate your bottom line.

What to Know About Maintaining a Floating House Houseboat

The amount of maintenance you'll find on a floating home or houseboat is similar to what you'll find in most homes, though how you maintain it may be a bit different.

When it comes to systems that don't operate exactly the same as a home on land, a person with experience working on floating houses is ideal. "Plumbing and electrical and painting – you really should have someone that specializes (in doing the work)," Collins says. In a floating home community, you're likely to find that those specialists are your neighbors.

With so much exposure to water, expect a bit more rust and warping as a result. "Wood and metal deteriorate literally in front of your eyes," Collins says.

Phyllis and Guy Biederman have been residents of Floating Homes Association Inc. on Richardson Bay for about nine years, and they note that regular maintenance issues would be most closely in tune with having a seaside home, because of the similar levels of exposure to salt water and weather coming off the water.

Because many floating homes have a concrete hull, it's important to check on the hull's condition and be diligent to repair any cracks that form. "It would be kind of like having a cracked foundation," says Guy Biederman, who teaches creative writing.

"Except houseboats can sink," adds Phyllis Biederman, a nurse.

Tips for Living on the Water

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind before you forego life on land for a floating home or houseboat:

Get to know the neighbors. Especially if you're living in a community of houseboats or floating homes, you're likely to recognize your neighbors quickly, and even more likely to become close.

"The minute we moved here we received welcome gifts like flowers, cookies, books," Ma says of the Floating Homes Association community. "I thought, 'This would never happen in the city.'"

Less is more. Like with living in a tiny house, your storage on a floating home, houseboat or other kind of residence on the water will leave you with minimal storage space. To avoid the added cost of keeping a storage unit on land, get strict about how much you accumulate.

"Any time something comes into your house, something has to come out of your house," Collins says.

Prepare for plumbing inconvenience. Even if you're living dockside, plumbing on a floating home doesn't work the same as it does for a house on land – a pump that uses electricity is a key part of getting waste out of a holding tank that's part of your home and to the line that goes to the sewer.

"If the power goes out, which it can do quite a bit in the winter, you don't flush your toilet and you don't use your water," Guy Biederman says.

Try it out first. Life in a floating home isn't for everyone. Make sure it's a good fit by visiting friends who live on the water or sign up for a tour of a floating home community. Additionally, Drage says about 80% of his clientele right now are people purchasing houseboats to use as short-term rentals through services like Airbnb or VRBO, which can be an easy opportunity to try out dockside life for a couple nights – or even a couple weeks.

Sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich tried to offload his vast assets amid clampdowns on the country's oligarchs. Take a look at his luxury empire, including the 3rd-largest yacht in the world.

  • Billionaire Roman Abramovich was once the richest known man in Russia.
  • He was one of seven Russian oligarchs sanctioned by the UK government on March 10.
  • Before being sanctioned, Abramovich scrambled to sell his assets, including his $3 billion soccer club Chelsea FC.

Roman Abramovich was once the richest known man in Russia. Bloomberg pegs his net worth at $13.5 billion, a $4.1 billion slump since the beginning of the year.

His net worth peaked in 2008 at $23.5 billion.

Ambramovich, 55, is known for his collection of superyachts, luxury cars, private planes, and homes around the world. The Wall Street Journal once nicknamed his global collection of extravagant possessions " The Roman Empire. "

The billionaire is the  largest shareholder of Evraz , one of the world's top producers of steel . He also owns stakes in the world's largest producer of refined nickel, according to Bloomberg.

Most of Abramovich's vast fortune comes from proceeds from selling Russian state-owned assets after the fall of the Soviet Union. He owned stakes in industries like airlines, oil, and aluminum .

In 2003, he sold a 26% stake of Russian airline company Aeroflot to the National Reserve Bank. In 2005, he sold his 70% stake in Russian oil company Sibneft for almost $10 billion. He also offloaded his aluminum assets for more than $2 billion.

Abramovich did not respond to Insider's request for comment for this story.

Katie Warren contributed to an earlier version of this article.

From 2003 to 2008, Abramovich was the governor of Chukotka, a remote Arctic province.

During his tenure, he spent $1.3 billion of his own money on the region.

Sibneft, the oil company of which he owned nearly 70%, was registered in the region until Abramovich sold his shares to the state-run energy company in 2015.

Abramovich has been married three times and has seven children.

His most recent marriage was to Dasha Zhukova, with whom he has two children . The couple cofounded the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow and the New Holland Island cultural center in Saint Petersburg. In 2017, the couple announced they would be separating after 10 years together.

Abramovich was previously married to Irina Malandina for 16 years. They have four daughters and one son. At the time of their 2007 split, he was worth $18.7 billion. Although Russian courts usually award a wife half of the wealth built up during a marriage, Malandina settled for $300 million  — 1.6% of Abramovich's fortune.

Little is known about Abramovich's first marriage to Olga Yurevna Lysova, except that it lasted for three years, from 1987 to 1990.

Now, with the West's sanctions on Russia's oligarchs, Abramovich has reportedly been scrambling to sell his assets.

In the aftermath of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's organization named Abramovich one of 35 Russian individuals who should be considered for sanctions, The Guardian reported.

Abramovich bought London-based Chelsea FC in 2003 from long-time chairman Ken Bates for $233 million. Abramovich is "a keen follower of sport and international football," a statement said at the time.

In a statement in March, Abramovich announced that he would be selling the club. "This has never been about business nor money for me, but pure passion for the game and Club," Abramovich said.

He also said all the net proceeds from the sale would go to those affected by the war in Ukraine. Bloomberg reported that he is seeking a bid of 3 billion pounds ($4 billion).

Abramovich is understood to have turned down a £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) offer in late February or early March, per SkyNews.

Abramovich was among seven Russian oligarchs who were sanctioned by the UK on March 10.

Despite the billionaire rushing to offload some of his assets — including Chelsea Football Club — the sanctions now bar him from making deals to sell the club, banning all transactions between Abramovich and UK citizens and businesses .

Chelsea FC is the seventh-most valuable soccer club in the world, per Forbes.

It was worth about $3.2 billion in 2021, per Forbes . While the club has amassed millions of fans around the world, not all are happy with its stance on Ukraine.

Chelsea FC posted a controversial statement in February, where it failed to mention Russia or Abramovich's ownership.

"The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC's thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace," the club said in a statement on its website at the time.

However, Chelsea's financial future is now in doubt because of sanctions against Abramovich. Sanctions on him mean that the club's finances are frozen , and that Chelsea can now only spend around $26,000 per game on travel.

In 2018, Abramovich was granted Israeli citizenship and flew to Tel Aviv after facing delays in renewing his UK visa.

Upon moving to Tel Aviv, Abramovich became the richest man living in Israel. In 2020, local media reported that the billionaire had dropped $57 million on a seafront hotel in Tel Aviv.

In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, several high-profile Israelis — including the chairman of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum and a chief rabbi — urged the US not to impose sanctions on Abramovich, according to The Times of Israel.

The representatives wrote a letter to the US ambassador in February commending Abramovich's investments, philanthropy, and contributions to Israel, the outlet reported.

The museum's chairman told the Washington Post that Abramovich was the museum's second-largest private donor.

Reports indicate Abramovich is also rushing to offload his London real estate holdings.

The billionaire has homes all over the world, including a $118.4 million home in Kensington Palace Gardens in London, an area nicknamed "Billionaires' Row," according to The Guardian .

"He's terrified of being sanctioned, which is why he's already going to sell his home tomorrow and sell another flat as well," Labour MP Chris Bryant told the UK Parliament in March, per Bloomberg .

Abramovich is also among the billionaires who own homes at Eaton Square — an exclusive garden estate in London that is nicknamed "Red Square" because of the number of Russian billionaires who own properties there.

Abramovich has spent tens of millions of dollars on prime New York City real estate.

Abramovich paid $96 million for four townhouses on New York City's Upper East Side with plans to turn them into one megamansion. He also bought another property two blocks away.

In September 2018, Abramovich transferred four of the five properties, all in a row on East 75th Street, to his third ex-wife, Zhukova, for about $92 million as part of their divorce proceedings, the New York Post reported, citing city property records.

Abramovich reportedly owns a home in Antibes on the French Riviera.

Abramovich bought the Chateau de la Croe , a mansion that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, in 2001, per Bloomberg.

In 2018, A French court found that Abramovich had undervalued the holiday home and had not paid enough wealth tax in 2006 and 2007.

In 2009, Abramovich dropped $90 million on an estate on the Caribbean island of St. Bart's, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person close to the deal.

The 70-acre estate is replete with Balinese bungalows with ocean views, tennis courts, swimming pools, and music pavilions, per the Journal's 2009 report .

Homes aren't the only things Abramovich likes to collect: The billionaire has reportedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars on yachts on his lifetime.

Abramovich bought the superyacht Pelorus in 2004. At the time, it was the 11th-largest yacht in the world, per Yacht Harbour .

But Abramovich's second ex-wife, Malandina, got the yacht in their divorce settlement .

Before sanctions were imposed on Abramovich on March 10, a 460-foot superyacht Solaris that was linked to Abramovich   departed a Barcelona shipyard after being docked there for repairs since 2021. The $600 million vessel left Spain on March 8, and was tracked moving eastward after leaving the shipyard.

Solaris was spotted on March 12 , anchored in Montenegro.

Abramovich later spent nearly $500 million on a superyacht called Eclipse.

house of yacht

At 533 feet long, Eclipse was once the world's largest yacht, though it's since been overtaken by the 590-foot Azzam , which launched in 2013, and later too by REV Ocean , a sleek, 600-foot yacht that launched in 2019.

Among Eclipse's amenities are two helicopter pads, cabins to host 36 guests and space for 70 crew, a 52-foot swimming pool — and a missile detection system.

The yacht was in a Barcelona shipyard last year for renovations, The Guardian reported in February.

However, the superyacht this week appeared to be headed in the direction of the Solaris yacht . According to data from MarineTraffic , the two superyachts could eventually meet in the Ionian sea if the Eclipse were to keep its course sailing east across the Mediterranean Sea.

Abramovich has reportedly owned at least three other yachts in his lifetime, including Le Grand Bleu .

His car collection is nothing to scoff at either.

Abramovich reportedly has dropped more than $11 million on luxury vehicles , including the above limited edition Ferrari FXX. Only 29 were made.

Abramovich also bought a Pagani Zonda Roadster, one of only 15 ever to be made, according to The Telegraph. He has also reportedly bought  a Bugatti Veyron, a Mercedes AMG GT3, and an Aston Martin Vulcan.

Abramovich has a number of airplanes in his personal fleet, including a Boeing 767-33AER.

The customized interior of the aircraft includes a banquet hall that seats 30 people, a kitchen, an office, and a bedroom.

Abramovich previously owned a Dassault Falcon 900, which his ex-wife  Irina Malandina got in their 2007 divorce settlement, per Boss Hunting.

Meanwhile, a $65 million Gulfstream private jet linked to Abramovich was seen flying from Israel to Istanbul on March 14. Abramovich himself was spotted at a VIP lounge in Israel  before the Gulfstream jet made its journey to Turkey.

Abramovich's personal art collection comprises works by Pablo Picasso, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon.

house of yacht

In 2008, he spent $34 million on a piece entitled "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping" by Freud.

The very next night at Sotheby's, Abramovich paid $86.3 million for Francis Bacon's "Triptych, 1976," according to The Wall Street Journal .

But Abramovich's art collection could soon be under scrutiny. Several countries are looking to freeze Russian billionaires' foreign-owned assets, which could include some of the most valuable pieces in the world, reported The Art Newspaper.

Reddit users defend husband who did not tell his wife a crime was committed in their house.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Reddit user whose wife moved out of their house after she discovered a crime took place there before she moved in did nothing wrong by not telling her about the house’s history, other Reddit users insisted — but a communications expert told Fox News Digital the situation is far more complicated.

“AITAH for not telling my wife the  history of the house  I bought?” asked Reddit user “Pleasant-Tear3205” in a May 6 post on Reddit’s “AITAH” subreddit.

“AITAH” stands for “Am I the a–hole here,” a site for users to share conflicts with others and then receive opinions and judgments in return.

In the post, the writer said he’s 34, and that nine years ago, he bought a house, as he “wanted nothing more than to live on a few acres of land in a quiet house with my dogs” (he did not share his location).

He looked for “months” for a house with no luck, he said.

“Finally, a [real estate professional] asked me if I would mind if the house had  a bit of a history ,” said Pleasant-Tear3205.

“I said it would depend (wouldn’t want anyone showing up with a baseball bat to collect an unpaid debt),” the man shared with others.

Instead, he was informed that a murder-suicide had occurred in the house a few years earlier.

The husband claimed the home would be worth at least $100,000 more if the murder didn't happen inside their residence.

Unfazed, Pleasant-Tear3205 said he “didn’t think much of it and agreed to view the house” — which he ended up buying, as it had “four bedrooms and two bathrooms and is on three acres of land.”

“The asking price was $481,000, which I knew was a steal,” he said. “The realtor agreed it would be at least $100,000 more if it weren’t for the fact that a high-profile crime had occurred in it.”

The man said he put in an offer below the asking price, “and miraculously the owner agreed.”

“I haven’t thought about what occurred in the house more than a couple of times since,” he said.

Five years after purchasing the house, Pleasant-Tear3205 met “Jennifer,” a 31-year-old whom he married last year, he said.

“When I took her to my house for the first time, she fell in love with it,” he said.

That is — until she recently learned what happened there so many years ago.

“The other day, Jennifer was at the grocery store, and she got into a conversation with an elderly woman. The woman asked where she lived, and Jennifer described the location,” he said.

“Apparently the elderly woman told her, ‘Oh, the old Johnson house? Terrible what happened there’ and explained everything,” the man shared in his post.

This new information did not sit well with his wife — who “got home in a panic.”

An elderly stranger broke the news to the wife that a brutal murder happened inside the couple's home.

“She told me that we lived in the ‘old Johnson house,’ which confused me, as I had never heard that name. Then she told me about the murder-suicide, to which I responded that I knew about it but  never really cared ,” he said.

“Jennifer got slack-jawed and said she couldn’t live in a place where something so terrible had happened.”

Pleasant-Tear3205 reminded her, he said, “that that’s what she had been doing for the past year-and-a-half.”

His wife then “dramatically fled the house with a suitcase to stay with her parents,” and is now arguing with her husband about selling the house.

“She seems really upset about my not telling her, but as I said before, I legitimately didn’t care enough to even remember,” he said.

He posed this question to others: “Should I have said something about this to her before she moved in?”

Fox News Digital reached out to Pleasant-Tear3205 for an update.

An etiquette and communications expert told Fox News Digital that the situation is very complicated — and that there really is no “right” answer to this dilemma.

“In the case of  husband and [wife] Jennifer , it’s not whether he was right or wrong. It comes down to personal angst, superstitions, or she likes to be informed,” Rosalinda Randall, a California-based civility and etiquette speaker, told Fox News Digital in an email.

Of the more than 700 replies to date to the post, most said that Pleasant-Tear3205 was "Not the A--hole."

Randall suggested that perhaps the wife should seek counseling to better cope with her angst at the house — or maybe she could learn details about the incident to put her mind at ease.

“Perhaps she could consider how happy she’s been, prior to learning of the incident,” said Randall.

Her reaction to the news and sudden move out of the house, however, could be a sign that their relationship may not be as solid as Pleasant-Tear3205 thought it was, she said.

Since phone conversations have proven fruitless, Pleasant-Tear3205 could consider meeting with her at  her parents’  house, and “possibly include her parents in the conversations.”

“Note to parents: Mom and Dad, either stay out of it or talk to your daughter about how marriage works,” Randall said.

Pleasant-Tear3205 should seek to “find out whether she’s mad because he didn’t tell her or because of the actual incident” — and aim to “figure out how to eliminate lingering bad vibes at the house.”

Randall went on, “In this case, I believe that she needs to cut him some slack by trying to understand that it really didn’t matter to him — he wasn’t focused on the history of the house, but the future.”

She also said, “Now that she’s had some time to cool off, pout, whatever, it’s time to gather herself and hold a grown-up conversation with her husband.”

Without “communication and listening to one another,” the expert said, “the relationship is doomed.”

Reddit commenters had a much less nuanced take on the situation.

Many said the husband was not wrong to buy the house and that he was also not wrong to  not  inform his wife about its history.

Of the more than 700 replies to date to the post, most said that Pleasant-Tear3205 was “NTA.”

“You had the house for years before you met her. It’s not like you were hiding it from her. It never came up ’cause you don’t think about it. I don’t have any advice for your relationship with your wife, but NTA,” said user “Rude_Land_5788” in the top-upvoted comment.

Other users shared similar stories about their own homes.

“I unknowingly bought a house with a similar history. It was only weird the first night I found out. People die in houses all the time. It’s OK,” said Reddit user “pdxcouplese” in another top comment.

One of the replies to pdxcouplese’s comment noted that “in Europe ,  it would be weirder to live in a house where no one died if it’s near city center.”

Another user had a tongue-in-cheek suggestion for what Pleasant-Tear3205’s wife should do if she wants to avoid living where people have died.

“If your wife wants to go where no one has ever died before, suggest she volunteer to be one of those people who colonizes Mars,” said user “Ok_Perception1131.”

Hitler’s yacht sits off the coast of this Florida beach. Here’s why

The ostwind is one of many strange objects found in florida’s waters.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

This vessel — dubbed the Ostwind — has a strange history. It was once owned by Adolf Hitler.

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

According to historian Mike Miller , Hitler’s plan was to ride the yacht into England after Germany’s victory, where he would accept Winston Churchill’s surrender aboard the boat.

However, history had different plans.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. reportedly took control of the Ostwind, which was used as a training craft at the U.S. Naval Academy before being sold to a Nazi memorabilia collector in the 1970s, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Despite offers from a Nazi group to buy the yacht and turn it into a shrine, the marina owner ultimately reached out to Miami Beach officials about using the Ostwind as an artificial reef.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

Nowadays, the only way to view the WWII-era relic is to throw on some scuba gear and take a dive.

Of course, the Ostwind isn’t the only strange object to be sunken off of Miami’s coast.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

  • Smoke stacks
  • Radio towers
  • A water tower
  • Oil rig structures
  • A railroad barge
  • A minesweeper warship

A man in a paisley button-up shirt stands outside, with a large R.V. vehicle visible behind him and a few white flowers in close-up in front of him.

He Sang ‘What a Fool Believes.’ But Michael McDonald Is in on the Joke.

The singer and songwriter with a silky-smooth voice has written a memoir with Paul Reiser that recounts his story of pain and redemption with dashes of humor.

The voice of Michael McDonald has been compared to velvet , silk and sandpaper , melted chocolate and last year, by a besotted 11-year-old girl, an angel . He has harmonized with the best in the business. But his latest duet might cause even the most Botoxed foreheads of Hollywood to furrow.

“How you like us so far?” joked Paul Reiser, the actor and comedian, from one corner of a squishy sofa in McDonald’s Santa Barbara, Calif., aerie on a recent Tuesday morning. He was there to talk about the singer’s memoir, which they wrote together and will be published by Dey Street Books on May 21.

In the other corner, emanating the equanimity that’s as beloved as his baritone, was the man whose 50-plus-year career has included backup vocals for Steely Dan, Elton John , El DeBarge , Toto , Bonnie Raitt and on and on — backup so extensive and distinctive it’s inspired playlists on Apple Music and Spotify . He was wearing a paisley-patterned shirt, black trousers and, as one might expect of an angel who must tread this cursed Earth, puffy Hoka sneakers .

McDonald, 72, has also spent decades in the spotlight, albeit sidlingly, often with his famous blue eyes shut . (“Singing is such an intimate act,” he explains in the book, “and like kissing, it does no real good to see what the other person is doing.”) He led the Doobie Brothers in various iterations with his gospel-inflected keyboard style; released nine solo studio albums traversing multiple genres and continues to make live appearances at venues from Coachella to the Carlyle .

A man in a black shirt and dark pants stands a few feet behind a man in a paisley shirt with a white beard, both outside in a garden near a house with an angled roof.

The book is titled “What a Fool Believes,” after the Grammy-winning hit McDonald wrote in 1978 with Kenny Loggins, though with some hesitation. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s just too obvious,’” he said. “I wanted it to be something clever and mind-provoking, and I couldn’t really think of anything because, you know, I have a problem provoking my own mind.”

He was convinced by Reiser, who among many other projects wrote the best-selling books “Couplehood” and “Babyhood” in the 1990s, and a follow-up, “Familyhood,” in 2011.

“I mean, how lucky am I?” McDonald said.

“Awwww,” Reiser said. But seriously: “He’s very introspective, which you don’t see at first and then you go, ‘Oh, this guy is deeper than you think.’” A beat. “Not that I thought you were shallow!”

As if in a marathon therapy session, they plunged together back to the past. McDonald grew up Irish Catholic, bracketed by two sisters in a suburb of St. Louis. His father was a streetcar driver and ex-Marine, a teetotaler with an eye for the ladies and a beautiful singing voice. His mother worked in a trading stamps store and had a weakness for pep pills. The marriage didn’t last.

He had an Aunt Mame with a Victrola from which, at age 5, he learned to imitate Mario Lanza warbling “ Love is a Many-Splendored Thing ”; an Aunt Bitsy who introduced him to Rodgers and Hammerstein; and an Aunt Ann Catherine whose record collection included, revelatorily, Ray Charles. Burt Bacharach was a big influence, too. Beatles-wise, he gravitated more toward McCartney than Lennon.

“I always related to him,” McDonald said, “because I could sense from him that he heard a lot of the same music I heard — that kind of barroom, Tin Pan Alley chord progression.”

In one devastating passage, McDonald writes of getting his girlfriend pregnant in eighth grade and biking over to confront her parents, who insisted, along with his own, that she give the baby up for adoption. Too young to sort through this emotional wreckage, he steered away. “Disappearing became my MO,” he writes. “Distancing myself from whatever it was that might require accountability.”

He dropped out of high school and joined a series of colorful-sounding bands — the Majestics, the Sheratons, the Delrays, the Guild, the Blue. Old ballrooms; natty threads. Beer and marijuana became staples, and later, after he moved to Los Angeles and began breaking into the big time, cocaine.

Referred to Steely Dan by the drummer Jeff Porcaro in 1973, he “came to rehearsal a few days later and knocked everyone out,” Donald Fagen, the band’s surviving founder, wrote in an email. “There was a serious discussion about whether he should replace me as the lead singer, which would have been my personal preference. But, for some dumb reason, I was voted down. I didn’t insist, and I’ve regretted it ever since. I mean, here’s this monster singer and musician, and he’s also really funny and a sweetheart of a guy. What’s not to like?”

Patti LaBelle called about recording “ On My Own ” (1986) with McDonald, after a solo version went sour. “I said, ‘The person I would love to sing it with is quiet, beautiful Michael,’” she remembered. Recently they crooned it together on a jazz cruise on the Norwegian Pearl where, she said, he confessed nerves beforehand; when he emerged onstage, the crowd went bananas. “He’s one of a kind. He comes out whispering and then — all this power. It’s like he doesn’t even open his mouth, he’s just so laid back.”

Indeed, so constitutionally low-key is McDonald that Loggins, with whom he also composed “ This is It ” and “ I Gotta Try, ” and who released his own memoir, “ Still Alright ,” in 2022, didn’t even know his old collaborator is about to join him on the bookshelves.

On the phone, Loggins remembered the first time he heard McDonald in the Doobies’ “ Livin’ on the Fault Line .” “I just felt like, ‘Oh, this is going to be a major American voice,’” he said. “He kind of goes into a trance when we write, and if I say ‘play it again,’ he won’t remember, so I have to record all the time. We have completely different styles vocally, but blend really well. It’s not logical.”

In 2005, the duo, along with Hall and Oates, Christopher Cross, Toto, Steve Perry and others, were affectionately spoofed in J.D. Ryznar’s web series, “ Yacht Rock .” A strain of the much-maligned catchall “adult contemporary” category was suddenly rebranded as “smooth music”: gleaming with high production values and a general mellifluence; the polar opposite of punk. McDonald was portrayed as the genre’s earnest common denominator: its anchor, its intergenerational secret sauce, who stumbles out of fashion and then rises again when “ I Keep Forgettin ’” is sampled by Warren G in 1994.

McDonald compared the yacht-rock phenomenon to oldies radio. “Even though I was a little ambivalent about both, at first, they turned out to be the two best things that ever happened to us from the ’70s,” he said, “because we kept getting airplay.”

This wasn’t his first time as a figure of comedy. In 1981, in an SCTV sketch, Rick Moranis portrayed McDonald driving intently down a highway in a convertible to clap on headphones and sing bits of backup for Cross’s “Ride Like the Wind” before rushing off to his next gig. McDonald contributed a song to the 1999 “South Park” movie and sang at a fictional “30 Rock” benefit . In “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005), an electronics-store manager played by Jane Lynch is excoriated by an employee for broadcasting a McDonald concert video ad nauseam. (“If I have to hear ‘ Yah Mo B There ’ one more time I’m going to yah mo burn this place to the ground!”) And in 2013 Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake donned silver McDonald wigs to sing “ Row, Row, Row Your Boat ” with him.

We have his current writing partner to thank, or blame, for the chapter title “Doobie or Not Doobie, That Is the Question.” Reiser, an accomplished musician himself who can sit down at the Yamaha and spontaneously ripple off a Rachmaninoff concerto, first encountered McDonald performing during an event at a neighbor’s house. “And in a surge of moxie, I went, ‘I live literally next door, and I got a music studio with two pianos that I put in just in case this ever happened,’” Reiser recalled. “Would you like to come over?’”

A jam session ensued. A friendship developed. Then the pandemic descended. McDonald thought that during lockdown he might apply himself with renewed vigor to his painting hobby . Reiser had another idea. “He’s the only reason the book exists, as far as I know,” McDonald said. “Putting one foot in front of the other was never my strong suit, on my own power. By myself, I become like a blob.”

McDonald’s wife, the singer Amy Holland, wandered briefly into their living room, which is large, cozy and barnlike, with plenty of blankets and candles and a banjo mounted on the wall bearing the visage of her mother, Verna Sherrill Boersma, who did a hillbilly routine as Esmereldy in the 1940s and resembled …. was it Bette Davis? “Celeste Holm,” McDonald said.

He and Holland were married in 1983, with the lead singer of Ambrosia performing “Biggest Part of Me” at the reception. They have two adult children, a submissive golden retriever, and a possessive Chihuahua who sleeps in between the couple.

One of their previous pooches cringed at his singing, McDonald noted, and would try to pry his master’s hands off the piano keys every time he played.

“Everyone’s a critic,” Reiser said.

Working with McDonald, he said, was often just a process of having him slow down and fill out anecdotes that, to him, seemed like no big deal — Steely Dan partying in the penthouse of a London hotel, for one. “I’m going, ‘That’s like a Fellini movie!’” One chapter is devoted to an extended bender with the band’s co-founder, Walter Becker , who died in 2017; another features an unintentional acid trip. ( David Gest also makes an appearance.)

“I remember looking to the guys who seem to manage it well — guys who did a little of this and did a little of that but didn’t have a problem like I suspect that I already did,” McDonald said. “Their whole thing was ‘You just got to manage it — you can’t overdo it, man.’” He paused. “And every one of those guys, to a man, is gone.”

Sober since the mid-80s — he said his current vices are “food and sloth” — McDonald is not only still here, but discreetly ubiquitous.

Forget about velvet and silk: The more you read and think and listen, the more his voice seems like a connecting thread running through America’s popular-music tapestry that, if pulled, might unravel the whole thing — or at least, leave a significant, unmendable hole.

And yet, he said, “to this day I keep expecting the doors to fly open and the impostor police to come and grab me and take me out.”

Man strikes back against seaside order with boat mural.

house of yacht

A Seaside man responded to a city letter ordering him to build a fence in front of his boat by painting a mural of the boat on the fence.

Etienne Constable said he received the letter in July 2023. The city required him to build a 6-foot coverage screen in front of his boat. After discussing the plan with his neighbor, Constable said he decided to follow the letter of the law and build the fence, but with a lifelike painting of the boat on it.

"I'm not a rule-breaker but I like to make a political statement as necessary as well as a humorous statement and a creative statement," Constable said.

So far, the city has not responded to the fence mural. Constable says he considers it a First Amendment right of expression and would be surprised if the city tells him to take the mural down.

Images of the fence have gone viral online, with thousands of comments across social media. Both the owner of the boat and the artist behind the display say they were surprised by how big of a response the painting has received.

"I'm all in favor of generating a discussion and making people smile," Constable said. "The reaction is extremely more than we ever expected and we're both just tickled about it."

The artist behind the mural, Hanif Panni, has murals around the Central Coast. Panni said the piece creates a conversation about what is an eyesore and what is art.

"I'm a big proponent of public art in spaces," Panni said. "It engages people in ways that reaching out and having conversations doesn't sometimes."

With all the attention the fence is getting, Panni says other Seaside residents have already asked for him to create murals for their boat fences.

Broward felon associated with school accused of vandalizing ex-girlfriend’s house

Pompano beach felon associated with private school jailed in fort lauderdale after warrant.

Andrea Torres , Digital Journalist

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – After Valentine’s Day this year, a 26-year-old Pompano Beach felon’s record got longer.

Deshaun “Versace” Robinson — who was associated with a private school — was allegedly in a vicious romantic conflict that resulted in vandalism.

Recommended Videos

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office records, surveillance video shows Robinson used his left hand to break a house’s window on Feb. 21, and fixing it cost his ex-girlfriend about $1,700.

“He willfully and maliciously damaged personal property,” BSO Deputy Timothy S. Butts wrote in his April 16 arrest report, which listed Robinson’s place of employment as the Premier Academy , a faith-based virtual school based in Coconut Creek that filed for dissolution on March 27, 2023.

Broward prosecutors filed the new felony case against Robinson on May 3. Broward County Circuit Judge George Odom Jr. signed an arrest warrant. Deputies served it on Thursday and he appeared in court Friday.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections , Robinson has four convictions. He was in prison from March 29, 2018, to Oct. 1, 2018, and from July 26, 2021 to Sept. 10, 2023.

There were four arrests in Broward County when he was 18.

There was a traffic case on May 13, 2016. He was accused of grand theft on May 22, 2016; robbery, burglary, and grand theft on Oct. 31, 2016; and burglary and grand theft on Nov. 28, 2016.

At 22, deputies arrested him for battery on Oct. 12, 2020, and Oct. 13, 2020. Prosecutors filed the related court cases on Oct. 15, 2020, and Nov. 17, 2020.

Both Broward cases were dropped when he was 23.

In 2021, records show Robinson was convicted and sentenced for four 2016 offenses: Grand theft of a motor vehicle, robbery, burglary, and grand theft. About eight months after his corrections’ release, he was facing the new charge of criminal mischief with damage of over $1,000, a third-degree felony.

Robinson’s employment status or reported association with the former Premier Academy was unclear Friday. While many felony offenses can disqualify a person from working in Florida public schools, the state’s requirements for private schools are not as strict. There are higher requirements for private school owners than for employees or volunteers.

Putin replaces Shoigu as Russia's defense minister as he starts his 5th term

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday replaced Sergei Shoigu as defense minister in a Cabinet shakeup that comes as he begins his fifth term in office.

In line with Russian law, the entire Russian Cabinet resigned Tuesday following Putin’s glittering inauguration in the Kremlin, and most members have been widely expected to keep their jobs, while Shoigu's fate had appeared uncertain.

Putin signed a decree on Sunday appointing Shoigu as secretary of Russia's Security Council, the Kremlin said. The appointment was announced shortly after Putin proposed Andrei Belousov to become the country’s defense minister in place of Shoigu.

The announcement of Shoigu’s new role came as 13 people were reported dead and 20 more wounded in Russia’s border city of Belgorod, where a section of a residential building collapsed after what Russian officials said was Ukrainian shelling.

Belousov's candidacy will need to be approved by Russia's upper house in parliament, the Federation Council. It reported Sunday that Putin introduced proposals for other Cabinet positions as well but Shoigu is the only minister on that list who is being replaced. Several other new candidates for federal ministers were proposed Saturday by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, reappointed by Putin on Friday .

Shoigu's deputy, Timur Ivanov, was arrested last month on bribery charges and was ordered to remain in custody pending an official investigation. The arrest of Ivanov was widely interpreted as an attack on Shoigu and a possible precursor of his dismissal, despite his close personal ties with Putin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday that Putin had decided to give the defense minister role to a civilian because the ministry should be “open to innovation and cutting-edge ideas.” He also said the increasing defense budget “must fit into the country’s wider economy,” and Belousov, who until recently served as the first deputy prime minister, is the right fit for the job.

Belousov, 65, held leading positions in the finances and economic department of the prime minister's office and the Ministry of Economic Development. In 2013, he was appointed an adviser to Putin and seven years later, in January 2020, he became first deputy prime minister.

Peskov assured that the reshuffle will not affect “the military aspect," which “has always been the prerogative of the Chief of General Staff,” and Gen. Valery Gerasimov, who currently serves in this position, will continue his work.

Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said in an online commentary that Shoigu’s new appointment to Russia’s Security Council showed that the Russian leader viewed the institution as “a reservoir” for his "'former' key figures — people who he can’t in any way let go, but doesn’t have a place for.”

Figures such as former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have also been appointed to the security council. Medvedev has served as the body’s deputy chairman since 2020.

Shoigu was appointed to the Security Council instead of Nikolai Patrushev, Putin's long-term ally. Peskov said Sunday that Patrushev is taking on another role, and promised to reveal details in the coming days.

Shoigu has been widely seen as a key figure in Putin’s decision to send Russian troops into Ukraine. Russia had expected the operation to quickly overwhelm Ukraine’s much smaller and less-equipped army and for Ukrainians to broadly welcome Russian troops.

Instead, the conflict galvanized Ukraine to mount an intense defense, dealing the Russian army humiliating blows, including the retreat from an attempt to take the capital, Kyiv, and a counteroffensive that drove Moscow’s forces out of the Kharkiv region.

Before he was named defense minister in 2012, Shoigu spent more than 20 years directing markedly different work: In 1991, he was appointed head of the Russian Rescue Corps disaster-response agency, which eventually became the Ministry of Emergency Situations. He became highly visible in the post. The job also allowed him to be named a general even though he had no military service behind him as the rescue corps absorbed the militarized Civil Defense Troops.

Shoigu does not wield the same kind of power as Patrushev, who has long been the country's top security official. But the position he will take — the same position that Patrushev worked to transform from a minor bureaucratic role to a place of sizable influence — will still carry some authority, according to Mark Galeotti, head of the Mayak Intelligence consultancy.

High-level security materials intended for the president’s eyes will still pass through the Security Council Secretariat, even with changes at the top. “You can’t just institutionally turn around a bureaucracy and how it works overnight,” he said.

Thousands of civilians have fled Russia's renewed ground offensive in Ukraine's northeast that has targeted towns and villages with a barrage of artillery and mortar shelling, officials said Sunday.

The intense battles have forced at least one Ukrainian unit to withdraw in the Kharkiv region , capitulating more land to Russian forces across less defended settlements in the so-called contested gray zone along the Russian border.

By Sunday afternoon, the town of Vovchansk, among the largest in the northeast with a prewar population of 17,000, emerged as a focal point in the battle.

Volodymyr Tymoshko, the head of the Kharkiv regional police, said that Russian forces were on the outskirts of the town and approaching from three directions.

An Associated Press team, positioned in a nearby village, saw plumes of smoke rising from the town as Russian forces hurled shells. Evacuation teams worked nonstop throughout the day to take residents, most of whom were older, out of harm's way.

At least 4,000 civilians have fled the Kharkiv region since Friday, when Moscow’s forces launched the operation, Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said in a social media statement. Heavy fighting raged Sunday along the northeast front line, where Russian forces attacked 27 settlements in the past 24 hours, he said.

Analysts say the Russian push is designed to exploit ammunition shortages before promised Western supplies can reach the front line.

Ukrainian soldiers said the Kremlin is using the usual Russian tactic of launching a disproportionate amount of fire and infantry assaults to exhaust Ukrainian troops and firepower. By intensifying battles in what was previously a static patch of the front line, Russian forces threaten to pin down Ukrainian forces in the northeast, while carrying out intense battles farther south where Moscow is also gaining ground.

It comes after Russia stepped up attacks in March targeting energy infrastructure and settlements, which analysts predicted were a concerted effort to shape conditions for an offensive .

Meanwhile, a 10-story apartment building partially collapsed in Belgorod near the border, killing at least 13 people and injuring 20 others. Russian authorities said the building collapsed following Ukrainian shelling. Ukraine hasn't commented on the incident.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Sunday that its forces had captured four villages on the border along Ukraine's Kharkiv region, in addition to five villages reported to have been seized on Saturday. These areas were likely poorly fortified because of the dynamic fighting and constant heavy shelling, easing a Russian advance.

Ukraine’s leadership hasn't confirmed Moscow’s gains. But Tymoshko, the head of the Kharkiv regional police, said that Strilecha, Pylna and Borsivika were under Russian occupation, and it was from their direction they were bringing in infantry to stage attacks in other embattled villages of Hlyboke and Lukiantsi.

Associated Press writers Samya Kullab in Kyiv, Ukraine; Vasilisa Stepanenko in Vilcha, Ukraine; Katie Marie Davies in Manchester, England and Dasha Litvinova in Tallinn, Estonia, contributed to this report.

All 11 Fight Scenes In Road House 2024, Ranked

  • Hard-hitting fight scenes with expert precision make the new 'Road House' a thrilling watch for action lovers.
  • Elwood Dalton's ruthless tactics and tragic past add an edge to the chaotic violence in the remake.
  • Director Doug Liman makes the fight scenes leap out from the screen.

Just like the original movie starring Patrick Swayze, the new remake of Road House features plenty of brilliant fight scenes. The 1989 version of Road House is the ultimately guilty pleasure movie, packed with scenes of lowlife scum getting summarily beaten down by a stoic bouncer. The remake recaptures this crowd-pleasing feel, but it also features fight scenes which are laced with incredible tension. There are plenty of differences between the two movies, not least Dalton's UFC past in the 2024 version, but the remake is just as chaotically violent.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Elwood Dalton, a former UFC champion who retired after killing an opponent in the ring. Rather than cobbling together an unsatisfying life scaring underground MMA fighters out of their winnings, Dalton takes a job as a bouncer at a rowdy bar in the Florida Keys. Road House has been receiving positive reviews , and its hard-hitting fight scenes are a big reason why. Director Doug Liman previously worked on the action thrillers The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow , and he makes Road House 's fight scenes leap out from the screen.

Road House is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.

Road House Review: Doug Liman's Remake Is Bigger, Louder & Slightly Dumber Than The Original

Dalton breaking jack's fingers, dalton can incapacitate people with surgical precision.

Dalton often shows signs of his incredible understanding of human anatomy, presumably learned from years as a professional fighter. He knows exactly how to inflict the most damage with the absolute minimum effort, and this is how he turns the table on Jack when he pulls a gun on him. Jack thinks that waving a gun at Dalton will be enough to force him into his car, but Dalton doesn't break a sweat. He tells Jack very calmly that all he needs to do is break his index finger and his middle finger, and he follows through.

Dalton's Throat-Punch Kill

Dalton stops holding back after brandt's men burn down the book store.

One other instance of Dalton using his knowledge of the human body is when he kills Vince with a single punch to the throat. He explains that he's probably broken his hyoid bone and collapsed his trachea, but either result will stop him being able to breathe. It's an uncharacteristically cold-blooded moment from Dalton, and it suggests that mentally he could be back on the path to the dark place that saw him kill one of his opponents in the ring. This moment could be a tribute to the original Road House , in which Dalton rips out a man's throat.

Dell Being Killed By The Crocodile

Dell thinks he has the upper hand on dalton, but he ends up being eaten.

Dell doesn't take his initial loss to Dalton lightly. As soon as he's out of the hospital, he tries to run Dalton down in his car. When that doesn't work, he ambushes Dalton on his boat, aptly named "the Boat," with a shotgun in his hand. Just as Jack finds out, having a gun doesn't necessarily give you the advantage over Dalton in a fight. Dalton quickly disarms Dell and knocks him overboard. He tries to rescue him before a crocodile snaps him up, but he's too late. As everyone in Glass Key knows, "crocs hide their food."

Dalton & Ellie Fighting Brandt On His Boat

The waves level the playing field.

As Brandt tries to escape from his burning yacht, he takes a smaller speedboat with Ellie alongside as a hostage. Dalton commandeers Knox's boat and tracks him down, and he teams up with Ellie to fight Brandt as the boat is tossed around by the ocean. The waves add some extra jeopardy to the fight, but Brandt is no real fighter. If it was a regular fight on flat ground, Dalton probably could have killed him in seconds. He loses control of the boat before too long and gets catapulted into the bar, setting up Road House 's ending .

18 Best Jake Gyllenhaal Movies, Ranked

Billy breaking up a fight at the road house, dalton's apprentice learns how to take out the trash.

Rather than taking on every rowdy customer who comes to the bar, Dalton decides to train Billy and Reef as bouncers so that they can deal with the everyday troublemakers. They could hardly ask for a better teacher, as shown by how quickly their skills develop. Dalton is surprisingly hands-off in his approach. He tells Billy exactly what to do when a fight breaks out and one man has a concealed knife. Billy takes a big step back and pops him in the nose. Dalton can leave later knowing that the Road House is in safe hands.

Dalton's Career-Ending UFC Fight

Road house's ufc scenes use real-life fighters and pundits.

Director Doug Liman uses POV shots in Dalton's darkest moments, and his fight with Harris is the darkest of all.

Conor McGregor isn't the only UFC fighter in Road House . Jay Hieron plays Jax "Jetway" Harris, Dalton's opponent in his championship bout. Road House drip feeds the story of Dalton's fight throughout the movie. Eventually, it becomes clear why the event haunts Dalton's dreams. Dalton kills Harris in the ring by refusing to stop. Director Doug Liman uses POV shots in Dalton's darkest moments, and his fight with Harris is the darkest of all. The spectacle of the big occasion makes Dalton's trauma even worse. The cameras flash around him as he begins to understand what he has just done.

Post Malone's Bareknuckle Boxing Fight

The rapper is surprisingly convincing in his cameo.

Post Malone is one of the most surprising members of the Road House cast , along with Conor McGregor. He plays Carter, a bareknuckle fighter in the movie's first scene. Fittingly, the movie opens with a punch to the face, as Carter takes down a much larger opponent. The ring announcer claims that Carter has taken down six challengers in a row, but he backs down from fighting Dalton when he recognizes who he is. Road House starts with a bang , immediately signaling its intention to be just as action-packed as the 1989 original.

Knox Destroying The Bar With A Golf Club

Conor mcgregor's introduction shakes things up.

As soon as Conor McGregor is introduced as Knox, strutting boldly down the street in the nude, Road House kicks into another gear.

As soon as Conor McGregor is introduced as Knox, strutting boldly down the street in the nude, Road House kicks into another gear. He throws his weight around with Brandt's crew before strolling into the Road House like he owns it with a golf club in his hands. Knox brings a whirlwind of chaos with him, smashing glasses as he almost dances his way through the bar. He seems to enjoy violence and pain, and he picks fights with bystanders just to cause a nuisance. He even tears through the netting which protects the band.

Knox & Dalton's First Road House Fight

Dalton meets his match at last.

After Dalton decides that Knox's antics have gone too far, he steps in to confront him. Despite the chaos all around them as an all-out bar fight ensues, Knox and Dalton remain utterly focused on one another. Their fight is the first time that Dalton truly seems like he's in danger. Even being stabbed in the abdomen and hit by a train is less threatening than Knox tossing him behind the bar and slamming his fists through glass bottles as if they are made of tissue paper. Dalton walks away from the Road House, seemingly defeated.

Road House 2024 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play

Dalton taking down dell's gang at the road house, dalton finally shows what he's capable of.

Dalton's legend precedes him everywhere he goes , and this builds him up to be a fearsome warrior before he ever even throws a punch. Carter quits his fight as soon as he sees Dalton in the ring, and Billy says he is a big fan as soon as he meets him. Dalton has a lot to live up to, and his first fight scene shows that he's worthy of the hype. He asks Dell if he has medical insurance first, and then he brutally dispatches him and his four friends. Dalton's bone-cracking, head-smashing skills are put on display for all to see, but he never breaks a sweat.

Dalton & Knox's Final Showdown

Road house's final fight is also its best.

Dalton and Knox's second fight is a beautifully choreographed mixture of MMA mastery and sheer power.

Road House saves the very best for last. Knox and Dalton's final fight is just as incredible as the first one, but Dalton no longer reins in his killer instincts. Their fight is a beautifully choreographed mixture of MMA mastery and sheer power. They tumble around the ruins of the bar, grappling on the floor for a while, before both tiring and going blow-for-blow with the power of two heavyweight boxers. When Dalton seems finished, he draws on something extra to fight back and brutally stabs Knox with two broken pieces of wood. Road House 's post-credits scene shows Knox alive, setting up a potential rematch for the pair.
