rya powerboat level 1

This course is an introduction to boating techniques including everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment, general seamanship, knots, stowing kit and preparing the boat to go to sea.

The course is good for children to have some tuition in the basics of powerboating, seamanship, etc. giving them confidence and interest when joining their parents and friends on a powerboat having the knowledge to be a helpful crew in preparing the boat, mooring, coming alongside, anchoring, etc. as well as driving the boat under supervision.

We would generally run our PBL1 course in one of our 7m Coastline Ribs, providing the students the opportunity of driving a fast planing Rib giving them experience in a boat which may be similar to their parents or friends ribs or sports boats.

INSTRUCTOR TO STUDENT RATIO Maxiumum 3 students to 1 Instructor. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Candidates should be competent to the standard of Level 2 (including the coastal endorsement). Whilst the course does include time on developing your boat handling we will not have time to develop basic techniques. It is recommended that attendees acquire a First Aid certificate and VHF Operators Certificate either before or after attending the course.

MINIMUM AGE 16. Children over 16 (and under 18) can attend a normal course at any time but we must have the parent/guardian’s specific permission  – please call to discuss.

Aimed at experienced leisure boaters and those seeking to work commercially. The Advanced Course can be followed by the Advanced Examination. This course addresses areas such as night navigation, rough water handling and search patterns – a great course!

COURSE DURATION 2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 3 – 4 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO 3 students to 1 Instructor. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE The course assumes you can handle a powerboat very well as it is about developing your skills rather than starting them! It also assumes you understand navigation to the level of Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper Theory (although you don’t actually need the qualification). We would always suggest that we have a chat with you about your experience before you book the course to ensure that this is the best course for you

MINIMUM AGE 17

COURSE DATES We run Advanced courses on our boats at least every two months but for groups of 2 or 3 we are always happy to schedule dates to suit your diary. If you are a commercial or government organisation, then we can organise a course to suit you.

RYA CoC exam for Power Boats

What training and preparation should I undertake before taking the exam

2 Year relevant experience, including night pilotage. Ideally around 30 days, 2 days as skipper. 800 miles and 12-night hours. If you hold and RYA advance Power Boat course completion certificate the sea time is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12-night hours. Your theory knowledge should be at Yachtmaster theory level.

This will vary from person to person, but it is easy to underestimate the level that you need to be at for the Advanced Examination. The common mistake to make is to assume that because you have taken the Advanced Powerboat Course that you are at the right level. The Advanced Powerboat Course is a good work-up to the exam and certainly most people should undertake it. However, by way of example the Advanced Course may introduce you to night navigation whereas the exam requires you to demonstrate a high degree of competence at night way above the level you would have been at if the Advanced Course was your first trip out at night. In short, the advanced course introduces techniques and methods whilst the exam tests that using those techniques and methods is second nature to you. This will only be the case if you have invested plenty of time practicing the methods and actually put them into practice on real passages.

Make sure that ahead of the exam that you ensure that your theory is fully up to scratch (you need to be at the level of RYA Yachtmaster Theory) and put time in ensuring your close quarter boat handling is very good in any conditions. You should be able to put a RIB into almost any marina berth the examiner chooses either bow or stern first in any conditions. Practicing the various pilotage techniques, you will use day and night to ensure you are totally happy with their use is of course essential.

The examiner has to judge whether to recommend that you are capable of being responsible for 12 passengers, so he/she has to be sure that you have the necessary skills.

Charter of RIB for examination cost varies according to number of examinees. One person £210, Two persons £120 per head, Three persons £80 per head plus the RYA exam fee.

Aimed at those already working as a tender driver transferring guests/passengers in sectors such as the superyacht world or in other environments where you may need to transfer guests and passengers.

COURSE DURATION

2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 2 – 3 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO

3 students to 1 Instructor. You will often find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE

The entry requirement for this course is RYA Powerboat Level 2 course with the strong recommendation that attendees already possess the RYA VHF Short Range Radio Certificate and the RYA or STCW95 one day First Aid qualification.

Course Price £180 Per Person

If you are looking to use your own boat or hire a boat, which is up to 10m in length, especially when abroad, then it is almost certain you will need to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

There are no prerequisites or formal qualifications required for you to take an ICC assessment but it is recommended that you have the experience up to Day Skipper level.

If you already have an appropriate RYA qualification you will be able to apply for the ICC directly without the need for an assessment. Being a powerboat school we can teach you on a Rib or your powerboat.

If you want to learn on a cruising vessel over 10 meters then we can arrange that for you too.

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or Boat License as it’s often referred to can be issued to:  UK Nationals  UK Residents

Other Countries that have accepted Resolution 40 can also apply for an ICC here in the UK, please follow the link below and go to section 2 of the application form to see if you are eligible:

Everything about the RYA Powerboat Level 1 in South Africa

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course is highly popular in the powerboating and yachting industry. However, barely anyone talks about the RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course in South Africa or anywhere, really. In this article, let’s see everything that we should know about the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course and certification in South Africa.

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course and Certificate in South Africa

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course and Certification comes under the jurisdiction of the Royal Yachting Association , a UK-based governing body that primarily regulates powerboat and dinghy sailing, yacht sailing, and inland waterways cruising. As a pioneer in the industry, the RYA certificates are recognised almost globally, making it one of the most valuable certificates in the world.

Ideally, any serious want-to-be skipper should be starting with the RYA Powerboat Level 1 certification. If you are looking forward to thoroughly consolidating your powerboating skills, this is the first certificate to go for. This most basic course in the powerboat industry covers basic boat operations, safety gear, using mooring buoys, and man overboard procedure (theory). If you would like to thoroughly understand boating, the RYA 1 Powerboat certificate course would be perfect for you.

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Prerequisite

There are absolutely no requirements for the RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course.

Kids as young as 8 years old can take this course. For kids between ages 8-11, the course will be majorly observational. Any practical sections of the course will be strictly under a certified skipper’s observation.

Kids between the ages of 12 to 16 have more freedom to practical accessibility, however, still remains under strict observation. Due to the nature of this course, it presents a perfect opportunity to present a whole new set of opportunities to your kids. Children finishing the course successfully will receive a certificate of endorsement according to the boat type they used in the course.

Also, it is important to note that there is no maximum age limit to this course. This means even an adult can take this course anytime. And of course, adults have all the freedom to take active participation in all practical aspects of the course.

This course lasts a minimum of a day.

So, why do people take the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course instead?

Simply because they can, and RYA allows it. Besides, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course focuses much more on practicality and gives in-depth knowledge on handling a powerboat. Also, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 license is one of the basic requirements for the superyacht industry.

There are no prerequisites to take the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course, and you can easily take it in South Africa. Many RYA-accredited marine institutes like Skipper Training SA provide intensive RYA Powerboat Level 2 training, examination, and certificate.

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is considered a children’s course and has been overlooked for a long time; so much that this course is majorly not available outside the UK as there is barely any demand.

Is RYA Powerboat Level 1 Certification Good for Employment?

As mentioned previously, the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is considered a children’s course and it does not provide any real value to your resume. The minimum industry standard is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 license. However, courses beyond the RYA Powerboat Level 2, such as Advanced Powerboat, RYA Day Skipper, or Yachtmaster qualification do add significant value to your resume.

So, should you really take the course? If it is available and you got time, why not? It only helps in consolidating your skill sets, which makes you a better powerboat skipper. Does it add any value on paper? Frankly, no, it does not. But as a boating enthusiast, it is an important milestone nonetheless.

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 is the most basic powerboating course out there. While it does not add any real value to your resume, it does help with consolidating your skills. As a powerboat enthusiast, this course is perfect for you or your kids to gently immerse yourself into the boating world.

In South Africa, RYA-accredited marine institutes mainly focus on providing the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course to meet the increasing demands of the superyacht industry. If you are looking for the Level 2 course in South Africa, feel free to drop us a message and we would gladly assist you.
