PONANT: Luxury Yacht Cruise Review

PONANT: Luxury Yacht Cruise Review

This chic French line was founded in 1988 and is a Francophile’s dream. Ponant’s crew is discreet, the décor is subtle and the food is tantalizing. French desserts, cheeses and wines accompany passengers on cruises around the world , from French Polynesia and the Caribbean to the North and South Poles, and lots in between.

Passengers are a well-traveled, well-dressed international lot and the handsome captains stroll around the ship in short sleeves chatting with guests as if they are one of the passengers. Ponant is a bit of Europe no matter where the ships are sailing.

In late 2014, the company’s name was simplified from the French Compagnie du Ponant, to just Ponant, a simpler name for the company’s growing international audience, though Ponant still remains the only French-flagged, French-flavored cruise line out there.

Some sailings are directly operated by Ponant and others are under charter to well-known firms for individual sales as well as for special interest groups.

Ponant also owns Paul Gauguin Cruises, operating the ship M/S Paul Gauguin in French Polynesia and that will continue to operate under its current name.

The newest ships in the fleets are the 184-passenger sisters Le Laperouse, Le Champlain, Le Bougainville, Le Dumont-D’Urville, Le Bellot and Le Jacques Cartier, which started to debut in mid-2018; the 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot debuted in 2021 and specializes in polar expeditions.

Passenger Profile

Mostly Europeans, heavy on French, Swiss and Germans, with a growing number of Francophiles from everywhere else — including North America, Australia and Brazil. Children are welcome and expected to be well behaved; there is a children’s menu, video game consoles, and when there are a number of kids on board, a few activities will be organized by a staff member.

On a handful of special family-friendly sailings per year (often a Med itinerary in the summer), a Kids Club is offered with kids’ counselors supervising games and activities for ages 4+.

Several firms charter Ponant ships (either full or partial charters), so they will determine the languages, and a number of them are in the English-speaking markets.

$$  Moderate to Expensive

Voyages are offered all over the world, from Alaska to the polar regions to Africa, New Zealand, Australia, the Caribbean, Mediterranean and everywhere in between.

Fares range from $500 per person per night to about $1,000 per person per day.

Included Features

  • All onboard meals
  • Open bar throughout ship
  • Stocked cabin mini-bar & all soft drinks.
  • 24/7 room service

PONANT

Ponant Itineraries

The ships roam all over the world on one- to two-week cruises (some longer) — Mediterranean and Northern Europe, Alaska and Canada, Caribbean, Central America, both coasts of South America, West Africa and Southern Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, French Polynesia and Oceania, Hawaii, Indonesia, East Asia and focus on Japan, Australia and New Zealand, Antarctica, the Arctic including the Northwest Passage, trans-ocean positioning voyages.

A few highlights include:

The Treasures of India and Sri Lanka voyages sails for 13 days around the Indian peninsula from Mumbai to Chennai. You stop at UNESCO World Heritage sites while visiting Kerala and Goa, as well as Galle and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka.

A two-week Alaska cruise travels from Nome to Vancouver, exploring the route of fur traders. The ship sails the Bering Strait amid lakes, glaciers and pretty mountains.

Weeklong Best of Croatia voyages travel roundtrip from Venice and visit all the gems of Croatia, stopping in Korcula, Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split, as well as a stop in Kotor, Montenegro.

An eight-day Pearls of the Caribbean cruise is a roundtrip voyage from Fort-de-France, Martinique, to lesser-visited gems of the Caribbean, Your ship makes port stops at Bequia Island, Mayreau Island, Grenada, Barbados and Tobago Cays.

The Australia’s Iconic Kimberley cruise is a thrilling expedition into the Outback. Covering 10 days traveling from Broome to Darwin.

New for 2025 are four 12-night winter cruises along the St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and the French island chain of Iles de Saint Pierre et Miquelon. Activities are camping in an Inuit community, ice fishing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, and riding a fat bike. Calls are made at Saguenay, Sept Isles, Gaspe, Magdalen Island, Saint Pierre, and Sydney

The French flare, the amazing food and gorgeous interiors — tres chic.

Ponant features incredible itineraries and well-curated voyages with a fantastic range of enrichment and learning opportunities with its expedition team.

When to Go?

The fleet cruises in different regions of the world during the best times to visit.

Ponant Activities & Entertainment

The ships are in port nearly every day, but if there’s a sea day, most people enjoy simply sunbathing by the pool and soaking up the scenery.

In the French way of doing things, there isn’t an abundance of scheduled activities or group events. There are theme cruises from time to time focused on gourmet food and wine, film and topics like oceanography, with experts giving talks and demonstrations.

Evenings, a singing duo moves around the ship before and after dinner to serenade passengers as they sip cocktails and chat about the day’s adventures and the ones that lay ahead.

At the top of the tiered decks at the stern on Le Boreal/L’Austral/Le Soleal/Le Lyrial is a wonderful al-fresco bar, an ideal place to plant yourself as the ship sails off into the sunset — likewise on Le Ponant’s sun deck.

After dinner from time to time, a dance performance or film screening may be scheduled in the show lounge.

Ponant Dining

The delicious French and continental cuisine is a big part of the Ponant experience. I still sometimes dream about the dark chocolate mousses we devoured on a L’Austral cruise to Croatia (I gained several solid pounds on that cruise).

Each ship has two restaurants, one a more formal fine-dining multi-course French gourmet venue for dinner and the other a casual buffet restaurant with outdoor and indoor seating and themed offerings.

Some of the chefs are French (the pastry chef was on my last cruise) and no matter where they are from, they’ve been schooled in the French culinary tradition.

Meals incorporate fish and grilled seafood, and plenty of delicious soups and salads of all kinds. When possible, local ingredients are used, from cherries in Kotor, Montenegro, to rainbow trout from Nunavut, in the Arctic. Amazing desserts on offer might comprise a hazelnut mousse cake, lemon meringue tarts and that to die-to-for chocolate mousse already mentioned; easily the best desserts I’ve ever had on a cruise ship.

A selection of cheeses from France and Italy are a staple in the buffet and go well with the complimentary wines generously poured, I remember an especially refreshing French rose at lunch on route to our next Croatian port of call. You can always order a bottle off the extensive menu if you want something extra special.

Le Ponant is an 88-meter, three-masted sailing ship with lots of wood and nautical touches such as navy blue and white bedding and fabrics in the rooms. Most cabins are on the lowest of the four passenger decks and have twin beds — two rooms have king beds — and there are a few triples. Five larger cabins are higher up on the Antigua Deck.

Le Boreal/L’Austral/Le Soleal/Le Lyria l are nearly identical sister ships with the majority of cabins measuring between 200 and 236 square feet, not including the balconies (which all but eight cabins have). Cabins are designed in stylish neutrals of champagne, smoky greys or blues, and crisp whites with pops of color, like a red border on a bed throw or pillow.

All cabins are stocked with L’Occitane toiletries, bathrobes, mini bars and iPods, and a have a great split bathroom set-up — toilet in one little room and a large shower (and/or tub) and sink in another. They also have a desk and great adjustable reading lights on either side of the bed. Many standard cabins can accommodate three people with one on a sofa bed; ideal for families are the Prestige suites, which are ostensibly two connecting standard cabins. There are four large suites on the Deck 6 near the top of the ship.

The 184-passenger sisters Le Laperouse, Le Champlain, Le Bougainville, Le Dumont-D’Urville, Le Bellot , and Le Jacques Cartier feature the Blue Eye, an underwater sightseeing lounge. They make up what is termed the Ponant Explorer Class with enhanced ice-breaking capabilities.

The 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot is the largest ship in Ponant’s fleet. It offers 123 cabins with private balconies. Four 1,011 square-foot split-level suites sit at the back of Decks 6 and 7 and offer private terraces and whirlpools.

Public Rooms

All ships have two restaurants (except the Le Ponant sailing yacht), one main lounge, one combination lounge/bar, and a lovely outdoor bar with sea views.

There is no casino.

Each has a spa with a Turkish steam room, hair salon and an excellent ocean-view gym with a row of treadmills and recumbent bikes, plus a Kinesis wall with weights, pulls and grips for weight training.

A small library area (with a gaming console nearby) and a boutique round out the public areas, unless you also count the medical clinic.  There are two indoor lounges and lots of deck space for sunbathing. All vessels have a platform for watersports when anchored in favorable conditions.

The polar-class Le Commandant Charcot features a 270-person theater, two restaurants, main lounge and heated indoor pool in a large sun room, with a pool bar and fire pit. This vessel also offers an Observation Lounge with a library, as well as a well-equipped gym and a Wellness Lounge with massage rooms, hair salon and sauna.

Meanwhile, the intimate yacht Le Ponant has one restaurant, an outdoor bar, Bar Emeraude, an indoor bar/lounge and a small spa offering massages. The ship also has a gym and yoga sessions are offered on the sun deck.

Spirit of Ponant Catamaran

Based on Lagoon’s Seventy 7 model, the newcomer was built in Bordeaux, France. The cat features six generous staterooms for up to 12 guests and cabins for four crew. Ponant says seafarers can expect personalized service, including a private chef, tailored activities, and other high-end touches.

“The concept and design of this Lagoon Seventy 7 yacht has been praised by everyone in the industry, won over by the spacious interior and exterior areas,” Guillaume Le Brec, the experienced skipper in charge of this project at Ponant, said in a statement. “Guests will really appreciate the high-end finishings as much as her exceptional sailing qualities.”

Furthermore, the itineraries are completely customizable, too. The inaugural seven-night roundtrip voyages from Bonifacio can be tweaked to the traveler’s interests, with the captain offering recommendations. After a stint in Corsica, Spirit of Ponant will cruise around Mahé, a.k.a. the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, for the winter season.

Unexplored East Antarctica & French Southern Lands

Hobart, tasmania - cape town, dates: 17/02/2026 to  17/03/2026.

The Travel Concierge service

The theatre of mythical expeditions and a refuge for fascinating wildlife that is among the wildest on the planet, East Antarctica is still home to unexplored regions. Enjoy many moments of intense emotions on this 29-day half-circumnavigation of Antarctica , connecting Tasmania to the south of Africa, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, aboard Le Commandant Charcot , an enveloping cocoon shaped for the highest polar latitudes.

In these preserved lands, the icebergs drift majestically in sparkling waters, while the glaciers slowly flow, revealing the millennia-old secrets they have long kept . An ultimate quest and the promise of unforgettable and novel encounters in the footsteps of the greatest explorers, like Jules Dumont d’Urville, Erich von Drygalski or Douglas Mawson, the Australian legend of polar expedition who wintered at Cape Denison. Throughout your journey, our team of passionate experts will go over all the details of these historic exploits with you while sharing their knowledge of the wildlife and landscapes .

From Hobart , the departure point of many an emblematic polar expedition, set off on a unique polar odyssey, at the boundaries of the world, to admire all this singular territory’s natural treasures. During this unforgettable exploration, paced by the ice conditions between coastal ice floe, drifting icebergs and the largest polar icecap in the world - the Inlandsis in East Antarctica -, you will journey into this isolated region and make your way past the Australian research stations, Casey and Davis. Fascinating, bewitching, dizzying... there is no shortage of superlatives to describe Antarctica! In the icy depths of the Southern Ocean, mountains of ice rise like eternal sentinels, and Adelie penguins watch over the ice floe while humpback whales and orcas seem to guide the spirits towards unexplored horizons.

As you sail on to explore the eastern side of the White Continent, the ice floe and the ice disappear to make way for open-water navigation. Le Commandant Charcot will leave the Southern Ocean behind and you will perhaps have the chance to reach the French Southern and Antarctic Lands , in the wake of the great explorers who came from Europe in search of Terra Australis Incognita , such as Julien Crozet, Marc Marion Dufresne, Yves de Kerguelen or James Cook. During this all-new cruise in Antarctica, your senses will sharpen and you will be magnetised by the spectacle of the sparkling ice floe, the majestic tabular icebergs, the monumental ice shelves and the spectacular polar icecap . A unique moment, suspended in time, where the beauty of the White Continent is revealed in its full splendour.

We are privileged guests in these extreme lands where we are at the mercy of weather and ice conditions. Our navigation will be determined by the type of ice we come across; as the fast ice must be preserved, we will take this factor into account from day to day in our itineraries. The sailing schedule and any landings, activities and wildlife encounters are subject to weather and ice conditions. These experiences are unique and vary with each departure. The Captain and the Expedition Leader will make every effort to ensure that your experience is as rich as possible, while respecting safety instructions and regulations imposed by the IAATO.

Boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities

We invite you to read our boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities by clicking here .

Any new reservation implies the acceptance of these conditions.

To guarantee your entry into one or several countries, you must ensure that you comply with the formalities and health requirements specific to each destination. In just a few clicks on our online search engine, find all the formalities you must complete prior to your departure (visas, entry authorisations for each country, vaccinations, etc.).

The international situation can change rapidly, so be sure to check this information regularly prior to your departure. However, please note that we always recommend our guests contact the relevant national immigration and customs and border control authorities directly to find out what rules apply to their specific situation. PONANT is not responsible for any decisions made by guests based on the information provided by the online search engine.

The information below is current but subject to change at any time without advance notice from government authorities. Please consult your respective government agencies for visa and health information.

Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the completion of your trip. Passport must contain at least two completely clear, blank, unused visa pages for each visa required, not including any amendment pages. Visa pages with stains or ink from other pages in the passport are not usable. Guests who deviate from the scheduled embarkation or disembarkation port should research the foreign entry requirements for the port country. Due to government regulations, regrettably, Ponant will have to deny boarding to any guest who fails to obtain the appropriate travel documentation for this trip.

Australia : an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) must be obtained before your arrival in Australia. For more information, please visit https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder/visit . Carriers should be aware that there will not be any physical evidence in your passport. A copy of your ETA must be sent to PONANT at the latest 45 days prior to your cruise date. We also ask you to keep a copy of your ETA and keep it with your passport throughout the duration of your trip.

Australian customs regulations are very strict, especially for the import of food items such as fresh food (even sealed), fruits, eggs, meat, plants, vegetables, seeds, grains. Fur and feathers are also forbidden. We highly recommend you consult this website for further details : https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/can-you-bring-it-in.

It is recommended that you contact your health professional for any specific medical advise relating to travel through these regions, including advice on Malaria prevention and dengue fever.

List of items prohibited on board

To guarantee the safety and well-being of our guests, certain items are strictly prohibited on board. Should you have one of these products or objects in your possession, they will be confiscated immediately and will not be transported on the ship. When an item transported aboard is considered illegal, the relevant authorities will be notified systematically.

Click here  for the full list of items prohibited on board.

Warning about the use of drones : the use of drones aboard PONANT ships, whether they are sailing at sea, at a port of call or anchored, is strictly forbidden. The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers are responsible for obtaining these permits; they should be able to present them at all times. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landing"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, position of ice, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience in remote areas: please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

Hiking or snowshoeing

During shore landings, depending on the ecological resilience of the biome, we will propose hikes at different levels, in the company of your experienced naturalist guides. From a simple stroll along the coast to walks lasting several hours to reach particular viewpoints or historical sites, you will make the most of the opportunities provided by the weather and ice conditions. When the itineraries allow, you’ll put on snowshoes* to set off like the explorers of old and discover areas that have barely known Man.

Kayaking - Le Commandant Charcot

You will make the most of the sailing opportunities and weather and ice conditions to glide along on the clear waters or between the ice floes and get as close as possible to the immaculate nature of the poles. Supervised by licenced expert guides, you will try your hand in a kayak- a craft favoured by the Inuits for at least 4,000 years.  The kayak was initially used for hunting and fishing; for you, it will be a means of making the most of your adventure on the White Continent or in the Far North.*

  • The all-new half-circumnavigation of the eastern part of the Antarctic, an unforgettable trip into the heart of the ice and the protected zones of the White Continent, between the Pacific, Southern and Indian Oceans.
  • Enjoy the unique experience of sailing along the east coast of Antarctica and make the most of these moments to observe the endless variety of forms and states of the ice, in the silence and respect of the landscapes you travel through.
  • Set off on the trail of the great explorers and sailors like Jules Dumont-d’Urville, Marc Marion Dufresne, James Cook and Douglas Mawson and relive their legendary sagas.
  • Aboard Le   Commandant Charcot , a polar exploration vessel opening to the exterior, take time with these unique moments of exploration and observation, in the silence and respect of fragile landscapes and encountered species.
  • Outings and shore visits in a zodiac inflatable with a reinforced team of naturalist guides.
  • Conferences and information meetings on board with our passionate experts, specialists in the fauna, flora and history of the polar regions.
  • Varied activities in a winter setting*: hiking or snowshoeing, shore visit on the ice, polar plunge, kayaking.
  • The discovery of the largest polar icecap in the world, the Inlandsis in East Antarctica, a huge expanse of ice more than 3,000 metres (almost 10,000 feet) deep, where a sense of vastness reigns supreme.
  • The possibility of observing humpback whales, seals, orcas, various penguins (emperor, Gentoo, Adelie, chinstrap and macaroni), and light-mantled albatrosses.
  • Extend your discovery of the Antarctic during a half-circumnavigation of the southern part of the White Continent.

* Each departure is unique. The itinerary, landings, wildlife encounters and activities are subject to weather and ice conditions.

At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

18 February 2026   21 February 2026 - At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Arrival 18/02/2026 Departure 21/02/2026

Spend exceptional moments sailing aboard Le Commandant Charcot , the world’s first luxury polar exploration vessel and the first PC2-class polar cruise ship capable of sailing into the very heart of the ice, on seas and oceans which the frozen conditions render inaccessible to ordinary ships. Le Commandant Charcot is fitted with oceanographic and scientific equipment selected by a committee of experts. Take advantage of the on-board lectures and opportunities for discussion with these specialists to learn more about the poles. Participate in furthering scientific research with PONANT and let us discover together what these fascinating destinations have yet to reveal to us.

Adélie Land

22 February 2026   23 February 2026 - Adélie Land

Arrival 22/02/2026 Departure 23/02/2026

Adelie Land covers around 400,000 km 2 (around 250,000 square miles) of the White Continent between the 136 th and 142 nd meridians longitude East. These lands claimed by France in Antarctica are home, on Petrel Island, to Dumont-d’Urville station , which is named after the eponymous French explorer who investigated the region in 1840. Here, the few resident scientists share the Antarctic desert with Adelie penguins, seals and orcas, as well as emperor penguins during the winter. The extreme climate of this land at the edge of the world, characterised by its very low temperatures and its violent winds or blizzards, make it difficult to access its shores, which are protected by thick ice floe. Be among the rare people to discover this unique place where you will be captivated by the polar silence and the ice reflecting the rays of the sun as you experience the Southern Continent’s powerful fragility.

Magnetic South Pole

24 February 2026 - Magnetic South Pole

Arrival 24/02/2026 Departure 24/02/2026

The convergence point for the field lines of the Earth's magnetic field, the  Magnetic South Pole  attracts the magnetic needle of the compass. While the Geographic South Pole is the Earth’s southernmost fixed point, marking the intersection of the Globe's rotation axis with the Earth’s surface, the Magnetic South Pole moves over time. In fact, it is linked to the Earth's magnetic field which originates in the Earth's outer core, which is made up of molten metal and is subject to convection movements. It was during the French Dumont d’Urville expedition to Antarctica, aboard the famous ships L’Astrolabe and La Zélée , that the hydrographer and engineer Vincendon-Dumoulin made the first calculation of the magnetic inclination that enabled him to localise this pole in 1838. Set off in search of the Magnetic South Pole, try to get closer to it and, if luck allows it, attempt to reach it!

25 February 2026   26 February 2026 - Adélie Land

Arrival 25/02/2026 Departure 26/02/2026

Wilkes Land

27 February 2026   28 February 2026 - Wilkes Land

Arrival 27/02/2026 Departure 28/02/2026

Aboard Le Commandant Charcot, follow in the footsteps of the American explorer Charles Wilkes , during his USS Vincennes expedition undertaken between 1838 and 1842. A veritable mine of information for scientists, this isolated land - where only moss and lichen have managed to adapt and to take hold, forming the tundra -, promises a unique moment. Under an immaculate white coat, a secret world comes to life: from the icy mountains defying the sky to the vast glaciers, some of which stretch all the way to the Southern Ocean, and the icebergs drifting silently through frozen waters. These landscapes, unlike any other, are sure to captivate you.

Sailing along Shackleton Ice Shelf

1 March 2026 - Sailing along Shackleton Ice Shelf

Arrival 01/03/2026 Departure 01/03/2026

During this unique navigation, suspended in time, admire the fantastic spectacle of the Shackleton Ice Shelf. In the luxurious comfort of Le Commandant Charcot , specially designed for polar exploration, the vast icy expanses of the Antarctic will unfold before your astonished eyes. The air here is imbued with solemn serenity, only broken by the distant cracking of icebergs drifting along the shelf. You will perhaps have the chance to observe the many mammals, such as the whales , seals and penguins , which prosper in these icy waters.

Queen Mary Land

2 March 2026   4 March 2026 - Queen Mary Land

Arrival 02/03/2026 Departure 04/03/2026

On the eastern shores of Antarctica, between Cape Filchner and Cape Hordern , admire the captivating landscapes of Queen Mary Land , recounting stories of legendary explorations. In the heart of this region, discovered in 1912, during Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic expedition , mountains of ice rise like giant sculptures, sparkling beneath the rays of the southern sun. The glaciers wind their way like rivers of glass, shaping sumptuous scenery.  In this frozen kingdom, colonies of emperor penguins gather on the shores and leopard seals bask on the ice floe while whales slip graciously through its waters.

5 March 2026   7 March 2026 - At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Arrival 05/03/2026 Departure 07/03/2026

French Southern and Antarctic Lands

8 March 2026   9 March 2026 - French Southern and Antarctic Lands

Arrival 08/03/2026 Departure 09/03/2026

In the icy immensity of the Antarctic, between the 37th and 50th parallels south, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands encompass the largest emerged lands in the southern Indian Ocean, from the Crozet archipelago to the Kerguelen Islands. In the wake of the greatest European explorers, like Julien Crozet, Marc Marion Dufresne or James Cook , who sought out Terra Australis Incognita, you will explore these volcanic lands, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In these sanctuaries of biodiversity which represent unique terrain for scientific research, majestic icebergs stand like ephemeral sculptures, silent witnesses of the passing of time, while king penguins or elephant seals, the lords of these inhospitable lands, populate the beaches with their gigantic colonies.

10 March 2026 - At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Arrival 10/03/2026 Departure 10/03/2026

11 March 2026 - French Southern and Antarctic Lands

The Moscow metro now has a full 4G coverage

  • On 19 Oct 2018

The Tele2 mobile network company became the first to build an infrastructure for 100% stations of the Moscow's metro. The high-quality 4G internet is now available on all 259 stations of the Moscow's metro, Moscow Central Circle (MCC) and monorail.

The operator has secured a 100% 4G indoor-coverage internet an all stations of the metropolitan metro, including the passageways, pavilions, and stairways. The investments into the project have exceeded 800 million rubles.

The Moscow underground is a specific infrastructure object, which has its own particularities. All works on designing, installation, and adjustment of the hardware should have been conducted exceptionally during night hours when the metro is closed for entry. A sufficient number of stations have a status of cultural heritage, thus, the network development has required additional approvement from the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow.

The network coverage within the metro system opens new horizons for the analysis of the "big data". Tele2 Network has analyzed the users' activity during the summer months and has indicated the busiest metro lines, which were: Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Zamoskvoretskaya and Kaluga-Riga lines. During the summer months, on the stations of Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya lines the subscribers have downloaded 125 TByte of internet-traffic, have made over 2 million calls with the total duration of 27 thousand hours, which equals to 3 years.

The three-master joins the large family of Relais & Châteaux establishments as a new member. It is the first sailing yacht in history to obtain the label and be included in its catalogue of the finest travel addresses in the world. Due to its small size Le Ponant offers exclusive ports of call. With only sixteen elegantly decorated staterooms and suites and a dedicated chef, the travel experience is as if you are on your own private yacht.

A movement with meaning

Relais & Châteaux, established in 1954, is an association of 580 unique hotels and restaurants throughout the world, owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs – most often families – who are passionate about their craft and deeply committed to forging warm, lasting relationships with their guests.

Relais & Châteaux members protect and promote the wealth and diversity of the world’s culinary and hospitality traditions, to ensure they continue to thrive. They are equally dedicated to preserving local heritage and the environment, as articulated in the association’s Vision presented to UNESCO in November 2014.

Common areas

The striking lines, the quality of the materials, the sophistication of the way they’re combined: the common areas, designed by French design studio Jean-Philippe Nuel, exude a sense of timelessness and offer a genuine connection with the exterior scenery and landscapes. Their design offers a blend of purity, excellence and a sense of easy living through the prominent use of stylish plain tones: off-white, taupe and caviar grey. No flourishes or embellishments here, but instead a unity between the common areas and the staterooms .

Perini Navi 47M Sailing Yacht

After a bit of a lull, Perini Navi is back with a groundbreaking new sloop.

The iconic sailing brand, which the Italian Sea Group bought for $91 million last December, has returned from the depths of bankruptcy with a 154-footer designed for the future of yachting.

Indeed, the sailing yacht ’s engineering and tech appear to be at the bleeding edge. The vessel sports a sleek aluminum hull and a deep V-shaped bow that helps it maintain a steady heel angle, as reported by Boat International . It’s also equipped with a 200-foot carbon-fiber mast that supports a main sail and jib collectively spanning more than 13,000 square feet. The innovative new sail handling system, meanwhile, tracks and controls the sails via captive winches below deck.

Elsewhere, the sloop’s twin rudders can be synchronized through a “fly-by-wire” system for greater maneuverability when both sailing and docking. She also sports a re-engineered keel that allows her to easily navigate shallow waters. (This maximum draft is 36 feet when the keel is down, while the minimum draft is around 13 feet when it’s up.)

In terms of grunt, the yacht packs a CAT engine that can produce 533 kWh at 2,100 rpm and two main generators offering 86 kWh each. The vessel is expected to reach around 13 knots at full tilt and can cover up to 3,500 nautical miles when traveling at a cruising speed of 10 knots, according to Perini Navi.

With a beam of 34 feet, the new sailer has a volume of 390 GT and offers a lot more space than other yachts in her class. She can sleep up to 10 guests across four ensuite cabins and one supersized owner’s suite. The quintessentially Italian interior was designed in-house and pairs a bold color palette with modern furnishings.

Elsewhere, the yacht sports a wide swim platform, a sprawling flybridge and a large bow housing a 21-foot tender. Of course, it’s also fitted with a dedicated crane to launch and recover toys and tenders.

The new sloop is expected to hit the seas in 2024. It’s certainly good to see you back, Perini Navi.

The Italian Sea Group (TISG) has shown the world the first look at its freshly redesigned Perini Navi sailing boat and it’s 47 meters (154 feet) of pure sailing perfection.

perini navi sailing yacht

Perini Navi Yachts is an Italian company headquartered in Viareggio, Italy, that builds luxury cruising and performance cruising sailing yachts ranging between 40 to 88 meters (131-288 feet) in length.

The shipyard’s aim has always been to create large yachts that could be easily handled by a small crew, and it has managed to do that by developing a computerized sail-handling system that allows sails to be furled and unfurled with the push of a button.

perini navi sailing yacht

The new Perini Navi sailing yacht, which is set to be delivered in 2024, has been given a fresh look and the redesign also included innovative new features like the implementation of a new sail handling system and a re-engineered keel.

perini navi sailing yacht

The new sail handling system comes with a self-tracking headsail with transversal track and removable staysail.

The shipyard’s new sloop model is being constructed with an aluminum hull and a carbon fiber mast, and the restyling work has mainly focused on improving performance and efficiency. As such, the yacht features a smart hull design with an extended waterline (43 meters/141 feet) and a deep V-shaped bow.

To increase maneuverability during sailing and when steering to enter ports, the yacht will feature a pair of rudders that can be synchronized through a “fly-by-wire” system.

The redesigned yacht is powered a CAT engine capable of 533 kW/h at 2100 rpm and two main generators of 86 kW/h each. TISG says it will be able to achieve a peak speed of around 13 knots (14.9mph). Additionally, they estimate a range of 3,500 nautical miles (6482 km) when the yacht is traveling at 10 knots (11.5mph).

With a 10.5-meter (34.4-foot) beam and a gross tonnage of 390 GT, the vessel positions itself at the top of her class for volume. This great volume allows it to provide accommodation for up to ten guests in four en-suite cabins and the owner’s studio.

perini navi sailing yacht

The renderings made public by  TISG  show lots of alfresco spaces onboard and a modern design on the inside, with a nautical theme and a refined color palette.

Perini Navi unveils 47m Art Explorer

The italian yard is set to debut the world's largest aluminium sailing catamaran at the monaco yacht show 2023 ….

perini navi sailing yacht

Perini Navi , a brand under The Italian Sea Group since 2022, has unveiled its first sailing catamaran, S/Y Art Explorer . Like all new Perini Navi yachts, this 47m can be managed by a single person, thanks to its fully automated sail plan. According to the yard, this technology allows the catamaran to achieve speeds of up to 10 knots, even in extremely low wind conditions.

Designed by architect Axel De Beaufort, who handled both the exterior and interior design, Art Explorer will make its debut from September 27 to 30 at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 .

"Perini Navi Art Explorer is an innovative project on technical, engineering, and human levels. It represents another significant milestone made possible by our continuous pursuit of stylistic and technological advancements, as well as the professionalism of the entire team behind the project," comments Giovanni Costantino, Founder & CEO of The Italian Sea Group (TISG).

"This project showcases our ability to lead in the large sailing yacht segment and pioneer cutting-edge solutions aimed at significantly reducing the environmental impact of yachts. Art Explorer is the result of our ongoing investment in the study and research of emission-reducing systems, contributing to improving air quality and the health of our seas. Just over a year after acquiring Perini Navi and launching the new 'Genesis' fleet, The Italian Sea Group reaffirms Perini Navi's position as a global player in the world of large sailing yachts," says Costantino.

65 square meters of solar panels have been installed on the deckhouse roof, allowing for the production of 12 kW and a daily energy accumulation of over 200 kW. This system is complemented by a lithium battery bank that enables zero-emission electricity generation for more than 6 hours at full load. Additionally, catalytic filters have been fitted to all exhaust gases to reduce emissions and particulate matter.

All manoeuvres in and out of the harbour, as well as operations in protected areas, will be carried out in full electric mode. The flybridge will serve as a platform for virtual exhibitions, workshops, and conferences, while the main gallery will host 'Icons,' an inaugural digital exhibit on the representation of women in the Mediterranean, curated by Nomi Daucé, archaeology curator at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, at the yard, three more Perini Navi yachts are currently under construction:

A 60-meter ketch, boasting naval architecture by Ron Holland and both exterior and interior designs by French architect Rémi Tessier. It's slated for delivery by the end of 2024.

A 56-meter ketch with naval architecture and exterior design by Malcolm McKeon , with interiors from Winch Design . This yacht is expected by July 2025.

An A47-meter sloop, conceived by Centro Stile TISG, is also set for a 2025 release.

Best Perini Navi Yachts for Sale

Specializing in premium craftsmanship of some of the largest super sailing yacht builds in the world, Perini Navi’s continuous evolution in the design, engineering and construction of superyachts in aluminum and has made them the market leader in the large, custom super sailing yacht sector. For more than three decades, Perini Navi has influenced the concept of the modern sailing yacht and has become well known for its innovative yacht designs. Their success is in part to its in-house design team and facilities to build their own special sail system of alloy masts. In fact, all Perini Navi’s sail controls, masts and rigging are developed and manufactured in-house.

Perini Navi Heritage

The Perini Navi Group, which today comprises four companies, offers luxury racing and cruising sailing yachts and in 2007 launched a sister division with a series of large motor yachts. Perini Navi was originally founded by Fabio Perini in 1983 in Viareggio, Italy. Unable to find a large sailing yacht that he could operate single handed, Fabio created a company to design and engineer his own vessel and launched a prototype sailing yacht with ample living space that could be sailed with a reduced crew. That yacht is still sailing the high seas today, going by the name of Elettra. Today Elettra boasts enhanced sailing and operating mechanical systems similar to the ones found on the new generation of Perini Navi yachts. She is petite compared with Perini’s greatest achievement, the MALTESE FALCON, but having been put to the test in 35+ knots of wind, Elettra can more than hold her own at the annual Perini Navi Cup in Sardinia.

For the Adventurous at Heart

By 1988 the company was building its own designs and had developed a computerized sail-handling system that enabled the sails to be furled and unfurled with the push of a button. In 2017, Fabio Perini opened the share capital of Perini Navi to new investors and with Fenix Srl, the holding company of the Italian Tabacchi family, Perini Navi’s two brands, Perini Navi and Picchiotti, merged into one.

Along with the original Perini headquarters in Viareggio, the Italian company comprises facilities in La Spezia, Italy, Tuzla, Turkey and a charter and sales division based in New England’s Rhode Island. The main shipyard and central offices in Viareggio produce the majority of the group’s two lines – the Racing Line and the Fast Cruising Line. The Perini Navi series of motor yachts, which were previously built under the Pichiotti name, are produced in the La Spezia shipyard, where there are 230-foot (70m) hangars, two travel lifts and 164-foot (50m) piers. The group’s metalworking division is in Yildiz, Turkey, and has a space for hull and superstructure construction. It was here that special projects such as the ground breaking MALTESE FALCON was created in 2006. With three masts with curvilinear spars, naval architecture by Gerald Dijkstra and Partners, and interior design by Ken Freivokh Studio, the 300-foot (88m) MALTESE FALCON was the first of its kind to be seen on the market with the revolutionary sailing system ‘the Falcon Rig’. Since then Perini Navi have been responsible for the build of iconic vessels the likes of the 196-foot (60m) PERSEUS 3, which features the tallest carbon fiber mast ever built and the biggest downwind sail area on a yacht thanks to her unique bowsprit. Most recently Perini Navi have presented models from both its sailing and motor yacht series – E-Volution and Argonaut respectively – that make up part of its enhanced range.

To date the Perini Navi Group has constructed over 59 sailing yachts ranging from 80-feet (25m) to 300-feet (88m) in length, and four motor yachts ranging from the 83-foot (25m) ECO-TENDER to the 240-foot (73m) NAUTILUS (formerly GRACE E). They have another four super sailing yachts and two motor yachts currently under construction.

Perini Navi has attracted numerous famous owners and has won countless awards for their quality builds and innovative projects (close to 70 awards at last count).

The Perini Navi Group also offers clients a selection of service and refit facilities from the shipyards in La Spezia and Viareggio, as well as by Rybovich in the U.S.

Renowned for their high quality craftmanship and interior finish, exceptional comfort and seakeeping, Perini Navi builds are amongst some of the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

perini navi sailing yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

perini navi sailing yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

perini navi sailing yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

perini navi sailing yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

perini navi sailing yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

perini navi sailing yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Charter yacht of the week: Galileo, the 55m intrepid explorer concealed in elegance

Each week, we place a spotlight on one of the world’s finest superyachts for charter. This week, BOAT delves into the credentials of the 55-metre Perini Navi superyacht Galileo, an exploration marvel concealed in elegance.

Defined by a well-balanced, deep-blue hull  the 55.7-metre Galileo is as elegant as they come and looks like she should be cruising the Riviera’s stylish ports. This isn’t, however, what she was designed for.

In fact, Galileo has an impressive globetrotting résumé, thanks to her Ice-classed, steel hull with extra-thick plating. She was designed to conceal a fiend for exploration, complete with iceberg radar, rudders with ice knives, super-tough propellers and heated deck gear.

In warmer latitudes, she is not only a luxurious superyacht sanctuary, but the ultimate dive partner, equipped with sonar for wreck hunting.

Key Features

LOA : 55.7m Year: 2011 (2023) Guests : 12 Crew: 11 Entertainment: Diving, exceptional toy box, gym, exceptional chef Cruising: Maldives, Seychelles, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia

Delivered in October 2011, Galileo was built by Perini Navi's Picchiotti shipyard in La Spezia. She was the second vessel delivered by the yard that was designed by Philippe Briand’s Vitruvius franchise, which is well-known for its elegant, elongated lines and well-balanced profile. In Galileo’ s case, a low centre of gravity draws the design out, resulting in a hugely elegant vessel, which borrows cues from sailing yacht design, for which the designer (and shipyard), is famed.

The focus here, however, is seaworthiness and efficiency in the name of exploration. Her ice-classed hull has often ventured to cooler climes, cruising down the Antarctic Peninsula. This year, however, she will bask in the sunshine and explore South-East Asia before the Indian Ocean later in the year.

Galileo has a staggering range of 9,000 nautical miles, and a surprising amount of space on board with a volume of 726GT, with spaces well-equipped to accommodate guests for extended periods of time. This extends to noise levels in the interior; cruising at 10 knots will register just 46dB in the saloon and owner’s suite.

Life on board

Despite her hardy exterior, Galileo cocoons her guests in comfort and luxury with a warm and welcoming interior. She can accommodate up to 12 guests sleeping on board and embodies a traditional-meets-contemporary aesthetic with neutral tones, wooden finishes and bursts of colour. In a nod to her expedition credentials, there is a narwhal tusk in pride of place in the main saloon.

The theme throughout is predominantly mahogany with wengé inserts. Light pours into the main saloon, which has comfortable seating and a dining area, partly separated by a pillared sideboard. While she has been designed to emanate elegance, the interiors are well balanced with a natural wooden table and a collection of ornaments from her travels.

In line with her expedition credentials, the crew of 11 operate the yacht in remote areas for long periods of time, so a key consideration in the design was the exceptional crew area forward. The result is a proven track record pointing toward adventure, excellent food from the galley and a convivial atmosphere on board.

Out on deck, the theme contributes, with elegant spaces primed for lounging in the sun and taking in the dramatic surroundings. Her large foredeck is often used for yoga sessions on board, while her aft deck not only has a large dining table, but a large lounging area.

Where will Galileo be cruising?

In 2024, Galileo will be cruising South-East Asia before the Indian Ocean later in the year. She has planned visits to Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Maldives and Seychelles. In the June issue of the magazine , Galileo’ s captains Anthony Daebritz & Wes Bartho put their heads together to design the ultimate cultural route to capture Timor-Leste’s mesmerising heritage.

Galileo is available to charter with IYC with a weekly rate from €280,000

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
