How Much Does a Catamaran Cost? (By Type)

We all want our catamaran or to upgrade our current ones, but keeping up with the prices and knowing whether we’re getting a good deal isn’t always easy.  For those of us who already own one, we know they are expensive, but we hope to get a deal. 

The online forums are usually of great help with costs. You should check the market before asking to see what’s listed and what recently sold prices are. In the meantime, let’s take a general look at what the prices are out there. Keep in mind that the prices jump significantly every extra 15 feet in length.

For cruising cats, you’ll fork out between $200 thousand and a million dollars to get a new one. The median price is $500K. On the other end of the spectrum, pre-owned cats average $300 thousand. Generally, they cost between $200K and $600K. Looking for something recreational, that’s small? Prepare to spend about $45K to $50K.

Let’s look at the different types of cats, their average prices plus the things that impact their prices. We did in-depth research, but as suggested above, still go ahead and check because getting the right price means being thorough. Let’s take a look!

We are going to tell you what the different types of catamarans cost and what helps to determine their prices. 

New catamaran’s average price per foot :

Catamarans get a lot more expensive from 50 feet and up:

• $2,835 per ft for under 30 feet
• $9,767 per ft for 30 to 50 feet
• $18,055 per ft for 50 to 75 feet

New Cruising Catamarans

A new cruising catamaran is one of the most costly sailboats on the market. It is only topped by the most modern aluminum or carbon yachts. Catamarans for cruising have an average price of $350,000, and you won’t ever find them for less than $100,000 when they’re brand new. According to length, a new cruising cat can fetch up to $1M in cost.

I know what you’re thinking (these prices are ridiculously high. I’ve been there, and I know what you’re thinking.) Why don’t I go with a monohull? You may count on paying about twice as much for a catamaran as you would for a monohull of the same length. It’s worth it, however, for the increased comfort and unparalleled quickness it provides.

Is there a reason why one catamaran costs $170,000, while another costs $340,000? Size alone isn’t the only thing to think about in defining the price difference between two cats. Pricing is influenced by the brand. However, design is the most important factor.

To keep costs down, a basic cruising catamaran uses only simple materials and tools. State-of-the-art cruising catamarans of the same weight and size class have vastly variable equipment, automation, and sailing traits. A pricey catamaran design takes thousands of extra hours to design and build.

The integrity of under-deck accommodation has a big effect on the boat’s final cost. The initial cost of high-end catamarans with central HVAC, innovative energy-saving systems, automation, and all of its related equipment is astronomical. It’s also worth noting that high-end custom interiors need quality fabrics and hours of expert labor.

Catamarans for cruising can be built and marketed for almost the cost of a fancy monohull. There aren’t very many differences in price between the various types of onboard cabins and equipment. Carbon fiber masts, AC, and auto-sailing controls aren’t standard equipment on the majority of cruising catamarans. That means they’re out of reach for most cruisers.

Small Racing Cat Prices 

Prices for small racing catamarans are very stable for specific types and makes. There isn’t much of a market for these yachts because they lack cabins. They’re great for weekend boat events.

The make, size, and condition of a small catamaran all play a role in its price. Racing catamarans like Hobie Cats, which are very popular with the sailing community, range in price from $10,000 to $30,000. Generally, an open racing catamaran costs between $10,000 and $20,000 and is readily available for less than $50,000.

The Cost of a Secondhand Catamaran for Cruising

Pre-owned catamaran’s average cost per foot :

The average pre-owned catamaran costs about more than 30% less than a new one:

• $2,200 per ft for less than 30 feet
• $9,000 per ft for 30 to 50 feet
• $16,200 per ft for 50 to 75 feet
• $30,900 per ft for 75 to 120 feet

There are certain pros and cons to buying pre-owned catamarans. Around $250,000 is the typical price of a 40-foot secondhand catamaran. In the 1990s, these types of catamarans became popular, and the age of the boat isn’t much of a factor.

A used cat for sale under $100K is about as cheap as you’re going to get. It’s possible to get a tiny vintage catamaran or one that needs repairs, such as new masts or rigging. Fixing a cat can save owners up to $50K. Therefore, the trade-off is worth it for them.

The most expensive pre-owned catamarans typically cost between $700K and $1 million. These 45- to 55-foot-long vessels represent the apex of the industry. They’re typically no more than a few years old. 

It’s not uncommon to find a pre-owned 2019 Lagoon 450F for roughly $550,000 to $620,000, or $635,500 brand new, with a wave-piercing hull. The depreciation on late-model catamarans is relatively minor.

There are a plethora of variables at play when determining the price of a secondhand cruising catamaran. The age of the boat is the most important determining factor in its price. 

Most newer and late-model catamarans, even those made by reputable manufacturers, are in the $100,000 price range. Many sailors can’t afford to buy a sailboat outright, therefore this is a barrier to entry.

Catamarans Before the ’90s

Used catamarans from the 1970s and 1980s can find for significantly less money, and the main consideration is the boat’s condition. Interior, rigging/hull conditions are all included in this category. 

Since these vessels have an enviable reputation for their mythical qualities like speed, seaworthiness, or handling ability, they’ll command a higher price no matter how old or damaged they may be.

It’s important to have a good reputation when buying a secondhand catamaran because of its small size. Catamaran enthusiasts are close-knit and frequent the same web forums. Used catamaran prices are influenced by folks like this.

Why Do Catamarans Cost So Much?

Sailing enthusiasts often ponder why catamarans are more expensive than monohulls. Buying a 15-year-old 40-foot catamaran is more expensive than buying a new 40-foot monohull. Construction costs, demand, and ability all play a role in why this is happening.

The handling advantages of catamarans over monohulls cannot be overstated. For starters, they’re rock-solid, which means they’re better for passengers and crew alike when traveling through rough waves. They’re safe, easy to handle, and nearly impossible to capsize when on the water. They also feature a lot more useful interior storage and living space, so they can accommodate a large number of individuals.

When it comes to speed, catamaran vessels have an advantage over their hull-bound counterparts. Catamarans can go twice as fast as monohulls, resulting in lower expenses and a longer usable sailing range.

The cost of designing and building catamarans is significantly higher than the cost of building monohulls. To link the two halves and hold up the mast, catamarans necessitate meticulous engineering and material strength calculations.

A catamaran has two separate hulls with living quarters and an enclosed center cockpit, which consumes a lot more material than a monohull. Greater-quality components, such as winches, navigational systems, and other shipboard controls, all add up to a higher overall cost.

With just the expense of design and materials, a catamaran’s construction can cost as much as three times as much as a conventional boat. Used catamarans are in high demand because of the numerous advantages they offer their owners, and as a result, their manufacturers are unable to keep up with the demand.

What Determines the Catamaran’s Cost?

Numerous factors affect the cost of a catamaran, but the most important is its size and type. Predictably, larger catamarans cost a lot more than smaller ones. As compared to monohulls, the size of catamaran vessels does not vary greatly. There are significant price and use differences between large and small catamarans.

This is because there are two primary varieties of catamarans on the market, and they come in a wide range of sizes. The largest catamaran is the cruising catamaran, which is virtually never less than 30 feet in length or more than 50 feet in length. Catamarans used for leisure or racing have no cabins and are rarely longer than 30 feet.

Identifying an Affordable Catamaran

Is it possible to tell whether or not you’re getting a decent price on a catamaran? A suitable “official” source for boat pricing is a catamaran dealership or yacht appraiser. However, the online catamaran community must not be neglected.

McCONAGHY 55′ Catamaran

McConaghy Multihulls need little introduction. They are well known to be the pre-eminent builders of high tech sailing and racing craft. The McConaghy 55 Multihull was designed from the ground up by Jason Ker and his team highly experienced sailors, engineers and designers at Ker Yacht Design & Engineering.  Jason has been heavily involved in multiple Americas Cups including the most recent edition in catamarans.  The builder, Mark Evans and his team at McConaghy Boats are responsible for some of the most high tech racing machines and luxury superyachts in the world built for some of the most demanding customers and conditions.

Overview of the McConaghy 55 multihull:

The MC55 (formerly known as the MC52) has many improvements over the older model. The boat now has a larger cockpit with outside lounge seating as well as a forward cockpit which is accessible via the main salon. She sails close to windspeed, which means she can approach cruising speeds which are very close to the True Wind. Thanks to a meticulous control of weight owner’s will experience sailing unlike on any other catamaran. Sailing in utmost luxury at double digit speeds, effortlessly and safely.

Unlike many other high-performance catamarans – the MC55 has been designed and engineered with safety as its core parameter. Potentially hazardous daggerboards which could create a hull breach have been avoided and replaced by a simple but highly effective push-button centerboard system – a first in this luxury multihull market segment. In the retracted position the centerboard is completely flush with the hull, yet full deployed a high aspect draft of nearly 9’ rivals the most efficient windward foils. In case of striking an underwater object, the centerboards will automatically raise and avoid damage to the hull structure. Thanks to her specially controlled vacuum infusion process of pressed panels of E-glass/Epoxy, carbon-hybrid composite foam construction the McConaghy 55 multihull is much lighter than similar length catamarans, yet she is luxurious, safe and immensely stiff. Like the last generation of America’s Cup foiling catamarans which are so strong and light that they do not need a fwd. crossbeam, the McConaghy 55’s stiffness and full carbon longeron also allow for this elimination of the forward crossbeam, which further lightens this amazing yacht.

Garcia Explocat 52 review: A go-anywhere aluminium catamaran

The new go-anywhere Garcia Explocat 52 offers an enticing combination of space, pace and rugged construction. Rupert Holmes tested the new boat for Yachting World and felt it's clear she has the potential to make easy 250 mile days in the right conditions.

In recent years there have been two clear trends in serious long-term cruising yachts. Firstly catamarans have become mainstream, to the extent that professional racing sailors talk of ‘buying a catamaran’ for cruising with their families – a monohull doesn’t even enter the equation.

This trend can also be seen in ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) entries, where multihulls are increasingly common. In 2020 they accounted for 28% of the total fleet and a much higher proportion of new boats and more recent designs.

The second trend is the rapidly growing popularity of rugged metal expedition yachts. Aluminium is favoured for this as it offers good strength and stiffness without a weight penalty, especially for yachts over a critical size. That’s why many top-end racing yachts were built of aluminium before composites dominated that scene.

It was, therefore, surely only a matter of time before someone married these two concepts to create an aluminium expedition catamaran. Cherbourg-based Garcia Yachts has been building metal boats for almost 50 years, including Jean Luc Van Den Heede ’s 36.15 MET, in which he scored a podium finish in the inaugural Vendée Globe Race in 1989.

Equally Garcia needs no introduction as a front-runner in the development of expedition yachts, thanks to the success of the Exploration 45 that was developed with ARC founder Jimmy Cornell eight years ago. What’s less well known is that the Explocat 52 is by no means Garcia’s first aluminium catamaran.

A pair of 43-footers 15 years ago were followed by the SC48, one of which consistently posted some of the fastest passage times in the 2017/18 World ARC .

As part of the Grand Large Yachting group Garcia was also able to draw on considerable expertise from Outremer and Gunboat for its latest model, while naval architecture is by Pierre Delion, who also drew the SC48.

The Explocat 52 is therefore the product of a highly knowledgeable development team and has already attracted plenty of attention, including nomination for the 2021 European Yacht of the Year awards.

The core concept for the Explocat 52 is a robust, safe long-range yacht that offers good passagemaking speeds. A high level of comfort, both at sea – even in inclement weather – and in harbour was also a key requirement, and the boat had to be capable of being handled by a couple.

Go anywhere?

While a key marketing message for Garcia’s monohulls is ‘Nowhere you can’t go’, the company accepts this won’t apply as literally to the Explocat 52, even though the boat’s impressive speed potential will enable routing around a lot of bad weather.

The problem is, unlike being knocked down in a monohull, capsizing a multihull is always catastrophic. There are parts of the world, especially at high latitudes in the southern hemisphere, or out of season in the north, where it could be impossible to route around potentially dangerous weather. Nevertheless, the boat is intended to stretch the boundaries that are sensible for exploring the globe with a catamaran, allowing owners to sail a lot further north and south than might be prudent with existing designs.

Rugged construction is also a benefit when venturing off the beaten track in tropical waters. If anything goes wrong while exploring a poorly-charted lagoon, for instance, a fibreglass boat may be in grave danger. Many foam sandwich hulls have surprisingly thin outer skins, which can make the structure vulnerable to abrasion, whether from coral or a concrete quay.

By contrast, the thinnest plating of the Explocat 52 is 5mm, which increases through 8, 10 and 12mm thicknesses, before reaching an enormously reassuring 14mm at the bottom of the hulls. The boat has framing of up to 14mm and is structurally engineered to eliminate flexing between the hulls.

A substantial keel with a long chord length is welded to the bottom of the hulls. They are marginally deeper than the rudders, which offers some protection, as well as providing a firm base on which to dry out on a beach. At the same time the key elements that have made Garcia’s Exploration monohulls so successful are incorporated.

These include fore and aft watertight bulkheads and upstands for through-hull fittings that enable all seacocks to be above the waterline. A skeg ahead of the saildrives and rudders provides good protection, while the rudders are large enough to offer redundancy in the event of one being lost. In addition, the top aft corner of the rudders have a sacrificial zone designed to eliminate risk of the blade puncturing the hull, or becoming jammed, if it hits an obstruction with enough force to bend the stock.

What about weight? Are metal multihulls uncommon because they’re simply too heavy? As with aluminium monohulls, where the material offers better strength/weight ratios for larger boats, around 14m/46ft overall length seems to be a transition point for catamarans.

Below that composite boats will always be lighter, but above that length aluminium is lighter for equivalent rigidity than a composite structure that doesn’t use exotic materials. At 18.9 tonnes lightship displacement the Explocat is therefore in the same league as other cruising catamarans of a similar size and indeed lighter than some.

Interestingly, it’s also a similar figure to that of the Exploration 52 monohull, yet the Explocat offers a large amount of extra space and 35% more sail area. Maximum payload is a useful five tonnes. But how does that translate on the water?

Rapid exploration

Our test took place from Cherbourg on a gloriously sunny late November day, with a gusty and shifty southerly breeze varying from 7-19 knots.

It’s immediately clear the Explocat 52 picks up and sails at speeds that belie its displacement, putting it in a different league to other expedition yachts of similar length, especially when reaching.

Broad reaching at 120° TWA with full main and Code 0 in 16 knots of true wind we cruised comfortably at 10 knots, reaching an unfussed maximum of 11.8 knots, with the boat still feeling rock steady.

When the breeze picked up to 19 knots, at the design limit for the Code 0, we furled it and continued with the Solent jib instead, losing only a couple of knots of boat speed. By the time we turned upwind the wind had eased significantly, which gave a good test in conditions that can challenge cruising yachts.

In just seven knots of true wind we made 5.3 close-hauled, rising to 6.2 in 9 knots of breeze. Maximum upwind speed was 9 knots in 15 knots of true wind. However, these numbers can’t be achieved if pinching – the boat likes to be sailed fast and free, with tacking angles of at least 105°. This is hardly a surprise for a boat of this style that’s sufficiently fast to have a big impact on apparent wind angles.

Even in light airs the Explocat is surprisingly nimble in tacks, showing no hint it might miss stays, or slow enough for steering to be difficult until speed is regained on the new tack. Obviously the steering has less feel than a lightweight monohull, but there’s enough feedback for it to feel reasonably responsive and enjoyable to helm.

The shifty and gusty offshore winds were ideal for figuring out the boat’s capability across a range of wind strengths, but the mostly flat water meant we didn’t see the boat performing in a more agitated sea state.

Pete Goss – another massively experienced high-profile Garcia owner – has sailed the boat in more lively conditions. Even fully powered up he reported the lee shrouds remaining tight and there was no telltale creaking of furniture below decks, indicating no deflection of the structure despite the high loads. “It’s incredible how fast she is,” Goss says. He was also impressed by how nimbly the boat tacks.

Cockpits and steering

Much thought has gone into optimising the deck layout. The core vision is for key operations to take place in the safety and shelter of the aft cockpit. The only exceptions are preparing the main for use and hoisting/dropping spinnakers and reaching sails.

As standard the helm station is offset to starboard at the front of the aft cockpit. It has a two-position swinging wheel, which provides an all-round view over the top of the coachroof in its upper position. When swung inboard and lower, the helmsman gains shelter from the hard top, while being able to see forward through the bridgedeck cabin windows.

However, at the request of the owner the first boat has twin outboard helm stations. Before sailing it I’d expected to prefer this arrangement, but didn’t warm to it. Granted, you can steer from the windward side, with a good view of the jib, but the headsail luff will also be visible from the higher of the standard steering positions.

The key problem with the twin wheels is the coachroof creates a large blind spot on the other side of the boat. This has potential to create issues when manoeuvring in confined quarters such as a marina or when bailing out of an anchorage in an unexpected squall.

Mainsheet and traveller are handled right aft on the crossbeam, while the headsail, staysail and kite sheets, plus furling lines, are handled by electric Lewmar 65 winches on each side of the cockpit. Plenty of large rope bins and bags help keep lines nicely ordered.

The rig has twin headstays, with a marginally overlapping furling Solent jib on the main forestay, plus a self-tacking furling staysail. This runs on a neat Dyneema strop, instead of a more conventional but unnecessarily expensive and heavy track.

Combined with furling spinnakers and reaching sails it’s an excellent configuration that takes the hassle out of changing gear to suit widely different conditions.

The square-top mainsail has a Dyneema strop that pulls the ‘gaff’ forward to the mast track without any need for complex hooks, making it as easy to use as pin-head sails. A fuse attaching one of the mainsheet blocks to the boom is intended as a capsize prevention device if the boat is over pressed.

When the fuse blows the strop joining the block to the boom extends by two metres, immediately depowering the sail. The idea of the forward cockpit is to provide a protected position for a lookout when sailing in ice and for anchor handling. It also doubles as a well ventilated area for relaxation when at anchor in warmer climes.

It’s generally easy to move around on deck and there are decent steps at a gentle gradient between the various different levels. I also liked the cork deck – it looks surprisingly good, has great grip and is a more environmentally friendly option than teak.

There’s plenty of stowage, both in small lockers in the cockpit benches and in cavernous sail lockers at the front of each hull.

Davits are rated to take a 500kg RIB, allowing a substantial, powerful tender to be carried.

Temperature control

Alongside the rugged exterior is supremely comfortable and well thought out accommodation.

This, of course, isn’t a boat where it would be appropriate for the distinction between interior and exterior living spaces to be all but eliminated, as it is for many recent designs intended solely for hot climates. Nevertheless, the standard specification has a drop-down window each side of the door between the saloon and aft cockpit. This will help to open the saloon to the aft cockpit and improve ventilation in warm weather.

For colder parts of the world an air extraction system vents moist and stale interior air without needing to open hatches.

The main forward saloon windows are also equipped with demisters. In the same vein, dedicated lockers for foul weather gear and boots have mechanical ventilation and heating. These features make sailing in cold and damp regions far more civilised, yet are addressed by disappointingly few manufacturers.

The aluminium shell is lined with up to 76mm of high density foam, which provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. As a result the boat is impressively quiet inside when under way – in the saloon you can barely hear the engines, even at cruising speed, and the high bridgedeck – it’s 85cm above the water – means we experienced no slapping of waves.

Insulation of this standard is expensive to install and doesn’t show up on photographs. Yet yachts create a cacophony of noise in heavy weather. Effective sound proofing is therefore a critical element in creating a comfortable environment, while the thermal insulation will be a benefit whether in the tropics or the Arctic.

As you’d expect, the saloon is very bright and airy, with a good almost all-round view.

The biggest drawback in this respect is at the navstation, forward on the port side, as the mast support and starboard forward mullion obscure some of the view.

Also to port is a big galley that offers plenty of secure worktop space, with low fiddles, and masses of stowage. The test boat had additional fridge and freezer space in the starboard hull. Garcia says more than half its customers choose electric cooking and this boat has a microwave, electric oven and induction hob.

The company has its roots in custom boatbuilding and offers several choices for fitting out the hulls, with options for 6-10 berth arrangements, including a classic owner’s layout. The aft cabins have natural light through two hull windows, a wide aft window to the cockpit, plus opening ports aft and overhead.

Meet the VisionF 60

VisionF Yachts has introduced the VisionF 60, a catamaran expected to begin deliveries in spring 2024.

The boat is a fiberglass build with a nearly 33-foot beam and a draft just over 2 feet that is projected to have a top speed of 21 knots.

“Clients can choose between having the galley on main deck or in one of the hulls, and from multiple accommodation options, including four or three double cabins—including a spacious master stateroom—with two doubles and a kid’s cabin, or a guest cabin can be used a gym,” VisionF Yachts founder Coskun Bayraktar stated in a press release.

Relaxation spaces include the foredeck lounge and dinette, alfresco dining on the main deck and a flybridge with sunbathing space.

Standard power will be twin 360-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels for a projected top speed of about 21 knots. Solar panels can be added to the deckhouse for additional power generation.

When is construction expected to start on Hull No. 1 of the VisionF60?In early 2023. Look for owners to start taking deliveries in spring 2024.

New images of Tecnomar's radical 43m catamaran This Is It released

New interior imagery of This Is It has been revealed by her central agency for charter, IYC . Built under Tecnomar , a brand of The Italian Sea Group (TISG), the 43.5-metre motor yacht debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 alongside TISG catamaran the Art Explorer .

The owner is Tasos Papanastasiou, a "self-made Cypriot" and founder of XM – one of the world’s largest financial forex platforms. Michel Chryssicopoulos, global managing partner at IYC , was the broker who introduced the client.

This Is It 's sculptural exterior is designed to "evoke fantastic sea creatures", with a hull optimised to enhance hydrodynamic efficiency for reduced fuel consumption. IMO Tier III-compliant, she will also be equipped with innovative exhaust gas treatment technology (SCR - Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Naval architecture is owed to Lateral Naval Architects .

Enveloped by more than 600 square meters of glass windows, the catamaran's composition created a significant challenge in terms of weight control. According to TISG, the complex curved shape of the aluminium superstructure pushed the performance of the material to its limits. "The realisation of this extraordinary project challenges the 'conventional' perceptions, driving us to completely recreate the boundaries of aesthetic parameters," said founder and CEO of TISG Giovanni Costantino.

Accommodation is for 12 guests across six ensuite cabins. Brought to life with a large skylight and with a head height of 3.3 metres, the spacious owner's area will evoke the feeling of a "seaside villa" with its panoramic terrace. There is further accommodation for a crew of 12.

Interiors are owed to Mattia Piro and Gian Marco Campanino of The Italian Sea Group. The spaces are styled in futuristic shades of champagne and platinum-grey with smooth finishes such as Alcantara suede, high-quality leather and bronze, platinum, and gold metallic surfaces.

“Naturally, what applies to external lines also applies to interior styling,” said Gian Marco Campanino. “Smooth, cocooning and curvilinear are perfect words to describe the interior of the yacht, plus a touch of pure luxury due to the use of sophisticated and precious materials."

The main lounge features floor-to-ceiling doors that, when fully opened, connect with the exterior lounge to create a holistic convivial area complete with a bar, game area, swimming pool and formal dining space. There is also a galley with polarised glass for events and show cooking.

The upper deck hosts a spa, fitted with a dedicated treatment area, sauna and sensorial shower. Adjacent to the spa is the yacht's "playroom", a convertible cabin that can be used to entertain children or as an additional guest room, according to the shipyard.

This Is It has a maximum speed of 19 knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles when pared back to 10 knots.

She will be the largest motor catamaran available for charter from April 2024.

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Since both of them  described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo

Zefira is the largest vessel crafted by Fitzroy Yachts to date. The Dubois designed vessel was built to exceptional quality levels which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts. Measuring 49.7m, sailing yacht Zefira is the largest luxury yacht crafted by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand to date and is the largest sloop Dubois Naval Architects has designed without a fly bridge. Sailing yacht Zefira is the 7th Dubois designed sailing yacht to be built by Fitzroy Yachts.

The modern interior, of sail yacht Zefira was designed by Remi Tessier and features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather providing clean lines and bright comfortable living areas. S/Y Zefira’s large saloon on the main deck opens to a covered cockpit area which features electrically retracting side windows. Lighting and entertainment control systems by Liquid Automation, enable the interior ambience to be effortlessly controlled at the touch of a button.

Superyacht Zefira’s stainless steel galley features a black granite bench top and stylish Gaggenau and Sub Zero appliances. The carefully planned layout of the galley and is extremely spacious and functional for a sailing yacht. Forward, the forward crew area is built to match the guest cabins with similar styling and detail incorporated into the joinery. There are a total four crew cabins each with their own ensuite accommodating up to 8 crew.

The Dubois designed fast cruising sloop Zefira, built under the project or model name x50 was crafted to exceptional standards which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts.

Sailing Yacht Zefira boasts excellent technical performance and features beautiful lines. Her aluminium hull is painted a stylish light grey and she measures 49.7m with a beam of 9.95m. Zefira is powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

MOSCOW, November 19. A drone flying to Moscow has been downed by air defense systems in Elektrostal in the Moscow Region, no one was hurt, Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on Sunday.

"In the Elektrostal municipal district, air defense forces repelled an attack by a drone, which was flying toward Moscow. According to preliminary data, its fragments fell down incurring no damage. No one was hurt," he wrote on his Telegram channel .

According to the Moscow mayor, emergencies services are working on the site.
