MAT 1220, A New Rocket Signed Mark Mills

MAT 1220

The MAT 1220 is a great design, signed by Mark Mills , for a new generation of IRC racers for MAT, emphasizing versatility both in performance profile and configurations. The premise for the boat is to produce a modern light design that is equally at home offshore as inshore, taking the rating-friendly features of the successful ‘French’ IRC design type and combine with slightly lighter displacement.

This French style of IRC design combines features such as medium displacement, greater emphasis on bow overhang, fin keel of moderate draft, and a number of sail plan tweaks to arrive at a very competitive corrected time solution inshore over 12knots true, and offshore in most conditions. 

Because of this combination of these features, it is inherently competitive reaching, and the Turkish yard has been working on improving the inshore character of the MAT 1220 in sub-12 for better light airs windward leeward performance without giving up the ability to get on the step downwind at a reasonable wind speed.  The base rating for the fin keel version with pinhead main is around 1.155, while with the fin keel and a squaretop it could go up to 1.190.

Building on the deck and styling of the MAT1070, the large cockpit offers an optimal platform for high-level racing as open space for fun family sailing.  The interior of the MAT 1220 can be completed to a range of fitouts from stripped racing to offshore racing to family racer/cruiser.

The sail plan of the MAT 1220 is built around the lower-rated pinhead main, but for lighter air venues the square top main offers a useful increase in sail area.  A twin rudder option is available for more offshore-oriented campaigns, and multiple winch choices range from the base layout to a pedestal-driven solution and a powered winch option.  Because it is not an extreme type form with a medium-sized sail plan and reasonable displacement, stability, and draft, the yard is also working on an ORC optimized configuration.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

MAT 1220 – another Mark Mills-Rocket

These days Alp Somer, one of the founders and partner of MAT Yachts in Turkey, published some renderings and first pictures of the latest boat and the internet kind of exploded. The IRC-optmized racer/cruisers from Izmir are an insider´s tip and regularly stir up the scene, win races, especially in the Mediterranean. After “discovering” MAT myself two years ago (I love the MAT 1070 really much!) I wrote another article on the upcoming MAT 1340 and with the brand new 1220 surprising us all, I took my chance to seek contact to Alp again.

Lars Reisberg | NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Merhaba, Alp. Good to see you again! Before we speak about the lasts Mark Mills rocket, let me ask: The MAT 1340 as announced prior to C19-craziness hasn´t seen water right now, why is that and why did you launch the 1220 beforehand?”

Alp Somer | MAT Yachts: “Hi there, Lars. Yes, that is true. We had announced the MAT 1340 prior to the whole Corona-crisis and sadly we had to hold this project during these very uncertain times. You see, with very limited racing opportunities almost everywhere in the world this market kind of “closed”. Also, we noticed that there was a strong tendancy of owners and buyers towards slightly smaller boats. That said, smaller boats need with fewer people on board. Sounds logical.”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “I understand. So you switched and pushed the new 12.20 instead. This is an IRC-optimized boat. In the Northern countries, like Germany for example, the IRC-scene is a fairly small one as most races are ORC and people tend to favor these boats. What´s your opinion on this?

Alp Somer: “Well, you see, the IRC-racing scene has a great number of boats and is still the leading system for the big worldwide respected offshore- and inshore-events. On the other hand, you are absolutely right, one must not ignore ORC. This is becoming more and more popular in many countries. Our new MAT 1220 is designed with features such as medium displacement, greater emphasis on bow overhang, fin keel of moderate draft and a number of tweaks in the sail plan that this boat will arrive at a very competitive corrected time solution inshore over 12 knots true. This is also valid in most offshore-conditions. Because it is not an extreme typeform with a medium sized sail plan and reasonable displacement, stability and draft, I can announce that we are also currently working on an ORC-optimized configuration.”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “The 12.20 looks awesome. What do you recon are the improvements over the MAT 1245? Where will the new one be better at? Will the 12.45 be phased out?”

Alp Somer: “Our MAT 1245 is a very successful IRC-racing concept, very hard to beat in certain conditions, especially in upwind-downwind races, light and medium. It has also plenty of interior and I would call it a true dual purpose yacht. We will of course not terminate the production of this boat. The aim for the MAT 1220 is to create a lighter, faster boat to provide more excitement. The premise for the boat is to produce a modern light design that is equally at home offshore as inshore, taking the rating-friendly features of the successful ‘French’ IRC-design type and combine it with slightly lighter displacement. Because of the combination of these features it is inherently competitive reaching, and we have been working on improving the inshore character of the boat in sub-12 for better light airs windward-leeward performance without giving up the ability to get on the step downwind at a reasonable wind speed. The base rating for the fin keel version with pinhead main is around 1.155, while with the fin keel and a square top it could go up to 1.190.”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Which target group of sailors do you want to motivate to go for a 1220? How many units have been ordered so far?”

Alp Somer: “MAT 1220 is built as a true racing boat and not comparable to production boats fitted with some racing features. It has always been the case with MAT Yachts. Therefore we are targeting experienced sailors able to read numbers and usually buying their next boat. I am proud and happy that we have been able to sell three hulls even before our official announcement of the MAT 1220. Two more so far which are going to clients who are already racing with our yachts. So we are pretty excited as of now.”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “What are the current delivery times, or maybe waiting times, for a MAT yacht in general? How has your company been affected by the C19-craze in general and the latest problems in worldwide supply chains?”

Alp Somer: “In general we aren´t that much affected which is a very good thing. Also, we I can say that our order books are pretty well filled, which is also great. The next delivery is for a MAT 1070 would be November 2022 if ordered soon. For the new MAT 1220 the same. For the MAT 1340 it will be early 2023. That´s because it is harder and significantly more expensive to supply raw material and equipment. Fortunately, even the worst days of pandemic, we only briefly had to stop the production. So just for a short period of time. In this, we are lucky that we were among the few to having a modern, clean and spacious building in a green and healthy area. So not much affected by Corona. Also, we quickly organized a private transport-system for our staff to avoid public transport and”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “What are MAT´s future projects when 1220 hits series production and maybe after 1340 has been launched? Any new boats upcoming, maybe as well with Mark Mills?”

Alp Somer: “We have a lot of ideas, as you can imagine, Lars. But at this moment we focus on working ourselves through the order books and getting our new projects started. We have a pretty attractive line-up o6 six different boats in our offer. You should come and visit our yard here in Izmir!”

M.A.T 1220 “Blue Moon”, a very special 12 meters

On Monday 8 August 2022 Blue Moon was launched in Cesme (Turkey), the first example of the new M.A.T 1220, a composite and carbon racer designed by the British Mark Mills for the Turkish shipyard M.A.T  , announced as one of the best performing boats in its category in class a IRC and ORC compensation. Armare Ropes oversaw the design and construction of all the Blue Moon running rigging, as well as other high-performance cables installed on board.

The M.A.T. shipyard needs no introduction. For almost 30 years, thanks to the projects, mainly curated by Mills Design, it has been offering cruiser racer boats of absolute prestige, ranking among the most representative sailboat builders in sizes from 10 to 13.5 meters. For example, in 2021 the M.A.T. 12 “Sailplane” won one of the most important regattas in the world, the Rolex Fast Race in IRC 1 class. Armare Ropes started an important collaboration with the shipyard that led to the design, production and supply of all running rigging for this last, important project: the M.A.T 1220.

The construction features of the M.A.T. 1220 leave no doubt about the racing ambitions of the project. Approximately 5,000 kg of of displacement combined with a very large sail plan, for an absolutely respectable power-to-weight ratio. The boat is optimized to give its best in long offshore races, with average winds above 10 knots, and to excel at both downwind and upwind. The lightness of the project is the result of the vacuum infusion construction of the hull and deck, in composite materials and with extensive use of carbon. Mast and boom, both in carbon, are supplied by Axxon.

Ropes and accessories chosen for this project are obviously part of the Armare Ropes performing lines, with extensive use of Dyneema SK78 and SK99 cores, combined with covers in various mixes of special materials, with different characteristics depending on the intended use on board. Review of Mat 12

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 200.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Mat 12 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.55 - 2.65 meter (8.37 - 8.67 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Mat 12 is 1.96, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Mat 12 is about 271 kg/cm, alternatively 1519 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 271 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1519 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

41′ IRC Cruiser/Racer blending performance, comfort and accommodation in a true dual-purpose yacht.

The MAT 12 design represents an extension of the successful Mills Design IRC Cruiser/Racer theme blending the performance characteristics of a racing design with the comfort and accommodation of a performance cruiser, resulting in a true dual-purpose yacht. With success across the Mediterranean she built on our production IRC experience while sharing many of attributes of our 40′ racing design Tiamat to promise both racing and cruising enjoyment.

This design concentrates on good all-around speed in a wide range of conditions. The balance of features and performance is made possible by quality cored vinylester/e-glass boatbuilding by MAT. On deck the security of seats and coamings creates a comfortable space for family and friends, while racing the large cockpit aft of the seats provides an uninhibited racing platform. Twin wheels allow the driver the best possible vision and communication with the mainsheet trimmer seated directly in front of him. A liferaft locker in the cockpit floor is a great feature for offshore racing and multiple opening ports and hatches provide the best airflow to the interior. The selection and location of deck gear reflects the race-winning capability of the design, allowing a skilled crew to extract the racing potential. Below the 3 cabin interior provides a lot of accommodation, with full galley and nav facilities and a fully enclosed head.

The swept spreader rig with masthead spinnakers and non-overlapping jibs is not only favoured by IRC, it is also the most popular sailplan for a wide range of sailing. With no runners or large jibs to worry about both racing and cruising are faster and more enjoyable. Nice features like external chainplates under a recessed cover reflect the combination of practical boatbuilding and visual flair which make this such a successful design. The 3 cabin interior provides a lot of accommodation, with full galley and nav facilities and a fully enclosed head. Results show the MAT 12 brings a new level of performance to the production Cruiser/Racer market offering a better priced and faster design with a better deck layout and more enjoyable sailing than its competitors. At least 12 major hospitals, health systems affected by global IT outage

Some hospitals opted to cancel elective and non-emergency surgeries.

Hospitals and health systems across the United States were among the industries affected by the global IT outage on Friday morning.

The outages, which stalled internal and external systems on Microsoft-based computers, were caused by a faulty update from CrowdStrike -- an American cybersecurity technology firm that provides cloud workload protection, threat intelligence and cyberattack response services

CrowdStrike said the outage was not a due to a cyberattack but rather a software issue that had been identified. A fix has since been deployed, the company said.

The Department of Health and Human Services issued an urgent alert to hospitals and law enforcement reporting that "multiple government agencies" were impacted.

At least 12 hospitals or hospital systems across the U.S. were affected by the outage with some reporting that they had canceled elective procedures Friday.

Those affected include Cleveland Clinic, Cincinnati Children's, Kaleida Health/Cayuga in Buffalo, Harris Health System in Texas, Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, Martha's Vineyard Hospital, Mass General, Memorial Hermann in Texas, Mount Sinai in New York, Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio and Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Mass General Brigham canceled all elective and non-emergency surgeries on Friday and issued an urgent message to employees about "a major digital incident … affecting all Mass General Brigham hospitals and sites."

Cincinnati Children's told ABC News that patients scheduled for surgery or radiology appointments should arrive at the scheduled time, but that they will likely face delays, advising families to plan accordingly.

All other non-surgical and office appointments before 10 a.m. ET were canceled.

"Many of our Microsoft-based computer systems have been affected by the worldwide technology outage," Cincinnati Children's said in a statement. "Our teams are working hard to minimize disruption to patient care and system operations, and we are bringing systems back up as quickly as possible."

Martha's Vineyard Hospital also said it was canceling non-urgent surgeries, procedures and medical appointments for Friday.

Harris Health System in Texas said some services remained open but elective procedures scheduled for Friday had been canceled.

"Dialysis services remain open at Harris Health Quentin Mease Health Center," the system said in a post on X. "All other Harris Health outpatient clinic appointments and elective hospital procedures are being canceled today and will be rescheduled when the information systems issues are resolved."

The University of Kentucky (UK) said in a post on X that the campus, including Kentucky Hospital Systems, was experiencing "some disruptions" due to the outage.

Later Friday morning, UK information technology services said some systems had been restored but others were still continuing to face impacts.

Memorial Hermann in Texas reported computers were down for about two hours, causing "minor interruptions to some applications."

Pharmacy chains also saw some impacts. Rite Aid pharmacies told ABC News it's seen "minimal impact" and pharmacies are fully operational.

The outage also affected hospital systems abroad including at least two hospitals in Germany , more than a dozen hospitals in Israel , the NHS system in Wales and multiple hospitals in Melbourne, Australia , according to local reports.

Executive with ties to Bannon convicted in billion-dollar fraud scheme

An exiled Chinese businessman who once had close ties to former White House adviser Stephen K. Bannon was convicted of defrauding his online followers of more than $1 billion, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Guo Wengui, also known as Miles Guo, was charged last year with wire fraud and money laundering after using money from thousands of followers to support an “extravagant lifestyle,” prosecutors said in their indictment.

Guo began amassing a following around 2018 through several avenues, according to prosecutors, including his web network called GTV Media Group, which researchers said spread disinformation about the coronavirus and the 2020 election.

In the March 2023 indictment filed in the Southern District of New York, prosecutors said Guo had “led a complex conspiracy” to solicit funds that he used to pay for a yacht, luxury car and 50,000-square-foot mansion. He was convicted on nine of 12 counts after a trial that lasted about two months.

In a statement Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said Guo defrauded followers to bolster his “life of excess.”

“Today, Guo’s schemes have been put to an end,” Williams said.

Attorneys for Guo did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday evening.

Guo made a fortune developing real estate in China before being accused of crimes including fraud and bribery, The Washington Post previously reported . He came to the United States in 2015 and bought a penthouse apartment in New York, according to prosecutors.

Once he’d moved to New York, Guo garnered an online following by posting videos and giving interviews “claiming to advance a movement against the Chinese Communist Party,” the indictment said.

His comments on China led Guo to become close with Bannon, who left the White House in 2017. The pair formed a partnership that prompted scrutiny from the Trump administration.

When Bannon was arrested in August 2020 and charged with wire fraud and money laundering — after saying he was raising money for a U.S.-Mexico border wall — he was living on Guo’s yacht, The Post reported . Bannon, who is serving a four-month prison term for contempt of Congress, is scheduled to stand trial this year in the fraud case.

Before his arrest, Bannon was serving as chairman of GTV, Guo told The Post in 2020.

Federal prosecutors said Guo had been using GTV, which had been touted as a “wide-ranging media company,” to solicit money from investors. Between April and June 2020, hundreds of millions of dollars worth of GTV stock was sold to more than 5,500 investors, according to prosecutors.

Guo was arrested March 15, 2023, in New York.

In their 12-count indictment, officials accused Guo and his financier of wire fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors said they had seized about $634 million from 21 bank accounts.

Guo’s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 19. He could face decades in prison, Williams said.
