History in the making The first seven decades of Feadship
2019 marked seventy years since the formation of Feadship. While the three main participants in the First Export Association of Dutch SHIPbuilders all have histories dating back decades further, the official establishment of what is today the world’s leading superyacht brand took place in a café in Amsterdam in 1949.
Capri , crowned Queen of the 1953 International Motor Boat Show.
Capri was crowned Queen of the 1953 International Motor Boat Show. Feadship’s high quality impressed judges and owners alike, who were especially wowed by Feadship’s skill with steel, which was rarely used for yachts in North America at the time.
Having set up his own yard in 1913, Henri de Voogt went on to become one of Holland’s greatest designers, working with both the Van Lent and De Vries yards before the establishment of Feadship. Joining the group in 1950, Henri designed many Feadships and played a pivotal role as the lynchpin between the Feadship families.
Dutch Treat 1954 – designed by Al Mason. Few people know that Feadship has a fine fleet of sailing yachts, that were launched until 1972.
As orders started flowing in for motorboats in both steel and aluminium, Feadship stopped building wooden yachts – Souris II in 1955 was the last.
Feadship had now firmly established itself in the lucrative American market and was coming to the attention of some pretty famous people, including Malcolm Forbes, who commissioned the first of three The Highlander Feadships in 1957.

Onlookers stare in amazement as Feadship Sunrise navigates the narrow roads of Amsterdam en route to the 1962 HISWA boat show. The yacht had already been bought by beer magnate Freddie Heineken but she certainly made waves as the largest yacht displayed to date in an indoor exhibition.
Personalities
This photo from 2003 captures the spirit and the flair of a man who was a great friend of Feadship for decades.
Carlo Riva designed and built countless beautiful boats in his lifetime, and his projects with Feadship in the 1960s (including Sunrise ) have gone down in yachting legend.
Senior naval architect Bastiaan Vermeer (second right) is congratulated by Joh & Henk de Vries and Jan van Lent on being awarded the Order of Oranje-Nassau after forty years of service to both Feadship and his country. In addition to his incredible work at De Voogt, Bastiaan was a powerful force in promoting Feadship as a brand, travelling to visit clients the world over at a time when that was a very different proposition compared to today.
Cees van Lent joined the yard that would later bear his name in 1917 and ran it on his own from 1947 onwards. A prolific designer as well as an expert boatbuilder, Cees was also chair of Feadship from 1950 to 1963. He was delighted and honoured to welcome Prince Bernhard (left), the consort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, on board the Feadship Billow at the 1960 Amsterdam boat show.
Another Feadship client known the world over was Henry Ford, who caused great excitement every time he visited by handing out gifts to the children of the yard’s workers. In this iconic shot of the christening of Ford’s 33-metre Santa Maria , the captain’s wife Ruth Hargrave gets ready to smash the champagne against her giant bow.
Feadship launched no fewer than 106 yachts during the 1960s, with an average size of 20 metres. The largest of all was Westlake III , launched in 1966, whose 45 metres and three decks placed her at the vanguard of a growing superyacht industry.

The hands-on involvement of clients embracing the Feadship build experience is not a new phenomenon, as this image from 1971 shows. The construction of Kapal IV not only pleased her commissioning owner Lou Kapelski: it has also stood the test of time, with the yacht (now named Victoria ) recently completing an exciting circumnavigation of Tasmania.
Talking of fascinating interior features by Pierre Tanter, here’s the hospital he created for Al Riyadh . This 65-metre Feadship was insanely large for the time and remained the longest member of the Feadship fleet for many years. At the start of the three-year build in 1975 the yard was too short to accommodate her and the nose protruded out of the back façade, covered by sails. As one might expect, when completed, Al Riyadh was the most luxurious yacht anyone had ever seen.
“ Our history illustrates our ongoing quest for pure custom creation”
The 1970s saw the emergence of dedicated interior designers who were not attached to any single yard. One of the first Feadships produced by such a star was LAC II , launched in 1975. Pierre Tanter created a lavish, Oriental-style interior with highlights such as an exotic trompe l’œil in the main salon and wallpaper with an Asian bamboo motif in the beauty parlour, complete with barber’s chair.
Henk van Gerven , Theo van Lent and Jan van Lent in front of the Feadship Agrippina in 1970. After Cees van Lent passed away in 1963, his sons Theo and Jan took over the Feadship Van Lent yard together with Cees’s right-hand man Henk van Gerven. Dick van Lent also describes Henk as his mentor, illustrating his key support role to three generations of the Van Lent family.
When Feadship established its own office in the United States in 1977, the ideal candidate to become general manager was Don Kenniston . Previously captain of the Feadships Jardell and Big R , Don remained at the helm of Feadship America for 21 years and cemented Feadship’s profile as the go-to-brand for US owners seeking premium quality.
Stopwatch in hand, Frits de Voogt takes a keen interest in the sea trials of one of the many Feadships to which he contributed design and naval architecture. His career spanned almost five decades from the time he started taking over the reins of Feadship De Voogt from his father Henri in 1958 to his retirement a few years shy of the new millennium. Now in his nineties, Frits remains an inspiration to all who know him and his work.

The fourth of eight Feadships called Gallant Lady was launched in 1988. She encapsulates the visionary ideas of the owners Jim and Jan Moran, including a highly detailed interior and a request that the tenders be concealed so as not to spoil the lines of the yacht. The Feadship engineers devised a way to stow the tenders under a special hatch, raise the deck at the push of a button, hoist them up with stainless steel cables and lower them over the side using crane beams. This ingenious solution swiftly set a new trend for tender storage.
1986 was also the year when Malcolm Forbes took possession of his final Feadship called The Highlander . The original design was for a classic canoe-stern yacht but that all changed when Malcolm visited Holland and saw Azteca under construction. Jon Bannenberg was asked to create a ‘capitalist tool’ version in green, while still incorporating one of the finest modern interpretations of a classic stern ever seen. The resulting ‘floating business card’ remains to this day one of the world’s most iconic vessels.
Jim and Jan Moran : This amazing couple built a remarkable eight Feadships called Gallant Lady between 1984 and 2007, ranging from 27 to 52 metres. Jim was the man who introduced Toyota to America and used his Feadships as a floating corporate entertainment and conference centre.
Jon Bannenberg teamed up with Feadship on a number of radical exterior designs from the early eighties onwards. Throwing convention to the wind time and time again, the sparring partnership between Jon and Frits de Voogt has become the stuff of legend.
Jan Kops ’s distinguished career as chief designer at Feadship De Voogt spanned decades and over 100 magnificent yachts. His first project was Kapal back in 1971 and by the time Jan retired at the end of the millennium this drawing board master had almost four kilometres worth of Feadships to his credit.
In 1989 Feadship launched Cedar Sea II , an exceptionally complex yacht which included a garage to accommodate a stretched six-door Range Rover, custom tenders in the same style of the yacht, a wealth of exotic marbles and a surgery room with an underwater window. This artist’s impression with the signature of designer Jon Bannenberg illustrates how the stars of the superyacht world were becoming increasingly famous with the wider public.

While some Feadships in the 1990s started to feature more futuristic lightweight interiors, the owners of Virginian went back in time in a very handsome manner. The yacht’s classic exterior lines were matched inside by an old-world maritime atmosphere, complete with an open fireplace in the library. Installing such a feature safely required, of course, the very latest in smart engineering.
Another trend facilitated by Feadship was meeting people’s growing need for speed. Powered by gas turbine-driven water jets, the 50-metre Sussurro had the power of 22,864 horses in order to reach 46 knots, aided by a deep V-shaped hull concept. She was also a mere 196 tonnes, a sign that the age of lightweight interiors was well and truly underway.
Regardless of their style, Feadships in all formats were increasingly going on ever- longer journeys in the 1990s. Battered Bull and her owner Don Flynn set the standard by embarking on a two-year circumnavigation. The yacht also carried the largest tender seen on a superyacht at the time in the form of a 12-metre powerboat capable of 80 knots.
Dick van Lent grew up next to the yard that carries his name and started work there in 1974. Over the next 33 years, first as assistant manager and later as CEO, Dick was one of the driving forces of Feadship. A lifetime of achievement was recognised recently when he was awarded one of the highest distinctions possible in the Netherlands, membership of the chivalric Order of Oranje-Nassau.
By the 1990s the Feadship name had become a corporate identity in its own right in the yachting world. Hein Velema implemented a more market- oriented strategy long before other yards had even considered doing so, which matched the quality of the yachts being built.

Wedge Too , the first superyacht project for French designer Philippe Starck, was a radical departure with her art deco exterior and oiled teak deckhouse sides. The minimalist interior was equally eclectic, including wheelbarrow chairs and a bowler-hat pouf stuffed with a huge green apple. The epitome of a bespoke yacht, Wedge Too never ceases to amaze.
Another game changing speed machine was the mighty Predator , built for an owner who wanted to hit the 25-knot mark without using gas turbines. The answer was a knife-sharp, aft-raked vertical bow combined with a slender, low resistance underbody, four MTU diesels, special gearboxes and massive Rolls Royce controllable pitch propellers.
In a decade where speed was king for some, other Feadships were built with distance in mind. The 43-metre Andiamo was the first expedition- style Feadship and has completed four circumnavigations of the earth since her launch in 2003. Visiting some of the most remote places on the planet, Andiamo is the ultimate floating home with an industrial-scale full beam galley.

The 78-metre Venus was as ingeniously different as the man for whom she was built. The world’s first mastless motoryacht had her antennae and domes hidden within an architectural statement. The yacht also featured an unprecedented amount of glass with huge windows extending the length of all main deck staterooms and an all-glass pavilion deck that offers unprecedented vistas at sea.
This phenomenal 2018 launch for a repeat client is also the largest Feadship to date. The 110-metre Anna features a wide range of bespoke innovations such as diesel- electric propulsion, an aircraft landing pad, a stunning two-deck atrium, a giant health club and a football pitch.
When the International Superyacht Society presented Feadship directors Henk and Tom de Vries with the prestigious Leadership Award several years ago, the committee of peers and competitors succinctly summarised the decades-long service of the two cousins: “They have an extraordinary ability to believe: to believe that it can and it will happen.”
When Dick van Lent retired in 2016 as CEO of the Royal Van Lent yard, everyone knew he would be a hard act to follow. Jan-Bart Verkuyl has since successfully taken over the helm, leveraging on a career in the maritime world that saw him join Feadship in 2006.
Since joining Feadship as a director in 2013, Farouk Nefzi has taken the marketing and branding strategy to a whole new level. The diverse elements within the organisation have been brought even closer together under the ‘One Feadship’ umbrella.
The world’s first hybrid motor-superyacht, Savannah made a clean sweep of all the industry awards in 2016. In addition to her eco-friendly propulsion, she was the largest object given a metallic paint livery to date (in Sea Foam green). Savannah ’s awesome floating superstructure also won many hearts, as did the extraordinary interior with its semi-submerged Nemo room.
Feadship crossed the 100-metre mark in 2015 with the spectacular Symphony . As the first superyacht to sail under the Passenger Yacht Code, she is allowed to carry up to 36 guests. There are around 200 different finishes in Symphony ‘s remarkable interior, of all which had to be certified for fire resistance by class in a masterful synergy of artisanship and engineering.
Built for the youngest owner to date, the 70-metre Joy offers an unprecedented amount of outdoor space for all members of the family for whom she was created and the maximum length possible for a gross tonnage of around 1000 GT. Her super-cool looks were created with Bannenberg & Rowell in the first joint exterior design since Jon Bannenberg’s death in 2002.

Obsidian: Feadship's New Cutting-Edge Yacht Sets Sail Towards a Greener Future

By Editorial Team 1 August 2023
Obsidian , the recently built luxury yacht by renowned shipyard Feadship, is making waves in the superyacht industry with its innovative design and commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
This 84.20-meter motor yacht represents Feadship's dedication to producing carbon-neutral superyachts by 2030, and it is the first of a new generation of large yachts that are focused on sustainability.
During trials, the yacht's generators ran on a second-generation biofuel called HVO, resulting in a 90% reduction in carbon emissions compared to yachts operating on fossil fuels.
One of the key features of Obsidian is its optimized hull design, which prioritizes energy efficiency at cruising speed rather than top speed. This, along with weight control measures and advancements in electric propulsion, allows the yacht to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
During trials, the yacht's generators ran on a second-generation biofuel called HVO, resulting in a 90% reduction in carbon emissions compared to yachts operating on fossil fuels.
The design process for Obsidian took place during the height of the global pandemic, with designers, engineers, and other parties unable to collaborate in person. Despite these challenges, Feadship's Senior Designer Bram Jongepier developed a sustainability index known as the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI). This index provides guidance on how every component and operation of a yacht contributes to its carbon profile and environmental impact.
There are so many points of energy savings integrated on this yacht that it is hard to count Mark Jans, Project Manager
M/Y Obsidian builds upon the success of Feadship's previous hybrid yacht, the popular charter yacht Savannah , which was delivered in 2015. The yacht incorporates Feadship's Advanced Electrical Drive (FAED) program for diesel-electric hybrid power, with 4.5 times more electrical storage capacity than Savannah.
The absence of drive shafts and rudders reduces drag, while propulsion and steering are provided by Veth contra-rotating thrusters. These thrusters were specifically chosen for their efficiency in a yacht with a relatively shallow draft.
Powering Obsidian is a 4.5 MWh battery bank charged by custom variable speed generators based on CAT C32 engines. The yacht operates on a 1,000-volt DC system, fully powered by electricity. The battery modules are housed in a chilled room amidships, allowing for optimal weight distribution and crew access.
The yacht has an impressive cruising range of 35 nautical miles at 10 knots on batteries alone, with silent operation at anchor for 10-15 hours.
Obsidian also focuses on reducing energy consumption for onboard amenities. The YETI tool revealed that about 60% of the energy consumed on the yacht is used for air conditioning, heating, hot water, lighting, and other lifestyle amenities. To address this, the yacht incorporates several innovations such as peak load shaving and computerized management of cooling guest and crew zones. Waste heat from generators and AC chillers is captured and reused, significantly reducing energy consumption.
In terms of design, Obsidian features a low, slim hull optimized for efficiency at cruising speed. Carbon fiber is extensively used to reduce weight, allowing for new deck layout possibilities. The yacht boasts a single-level engine room, creating more space for guest accommodation.
The interior layout, designed by British firm RWD in collaboration with MONK Design, is modern and bold, with surprising elements and unique spaces throughout the yacht.
Obsidian is also equipped with electric-powered tenders that can be charged in the water or in the tender garage. These tenders, custom-made by Tenderworks, align with Feadship's commitment to sustainability.
Overall, Obsidian represents a significant step forward in the superyacht industry's journey towards sustainability. Feadship's dedication to reducing carbon emissions and minimizing environmental impact is evident in every aspect of the yacht's design and operation. With its innovative features and luxurious amenities, Obsidian sets a new standard for luxury yachts that prioritize sustainability.
Currently it is not expected that M/Y Obsidian will be made available for charter. However, if you’re interested in renting a yacht of a similar caliber, you can view and compare all Feadship superyachts for charter .

Best Feadship Yachts for Sale
Feadship is a pedigree Dutch shipyard and one of the most successful luxury yacht builders in the world. Delivering yachts since 1949, Feadship is renowned for high-quality craftsmanship and their boats are among the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. Specializing in premium craftsmanship of some of the largest superyacht builds in the world, Feadship’s continuous evolution in the design, engineering and construction of their vessels has made them one of, if not the market leader in the large, custom superyacht sector.
History of Feadship Yachts
The award-winning Dutch yacht builder comprises of two shipyards, De Vries and Van Lent, and the naval architecture firm De Voogt. Their origins predate the 20thcentury – the roots of the Van Lent shipyard go back to 1849, while De Vries opened its doors in 1906 and De Voogt designs go back to 1912. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the three entities joined forces, along with several other Dutch shipyards, to form Feadship (which is an acronym for First Export Association of Dutch Shipyards) as an export association to promote their yachts to a thriving American market. In fact, up until 1973, a Feadship was defined as a yacht sold to an American owner.
The seven yards were struggling in post-war Europe but were met with great success in America, thanks in part to their quality craftsmanship and finish, and the fact that they were made of steel, something the American market had not seen. Their success was also down to the fact that they offered completely custom designed yachts, such a concept was almost unique and a very attractive offering for the booming American market.
Following a period of success and massive growth in the industry as Western economies boomed, the Feadship shipyards underwent a series of mergers and by 1968 the Feadship brand was consolidated to become three original entities, comprising of the two shipyards De Vries and Van Lent, alongside De Voogt Naval Architects. Many of the descendants of the original three shipbuilding families still work for the company today.
Feadship’s yacht-building facilities are based in Aalsmeer, Makkum and Kaag, while the design and engineering center, De Voogt, is located in Haarlem. The Royal Van Lent yard on Kaag Island has two dry docks and two slipways up to 328 feet (100m). Over 300 craftsmen are based at the Kaag Island yard. The Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw facility is made up of a group of companies that operate two outfitting yards in Aalsmeer and Makkum; here more than 800 craftsmen build custom superyachts of 328-plus feet (100m) in length. 250 of these craftsmen work at the De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum shipyard facility building yachts up to 393 feet (120m) in length.
Feadship also launched a fourth new construction and refit facility in the heart of the Dutch capital in late 2019, where they have the facilities to build yachts of up to 525-feet (160m) in length.
Since more than half of Feadship’s clients are American, the brand operates an office out of Fort Lauderdale. This office runs sales, acts as the global center of operations for Feadship Yachts Charter Design. It also acts as the point of contact for the U.S., South America and the Caribbean. You can visit the office or check out our online selection to see a wide selection of Feadship yachts for sale.

Feadship Yachts Models: Luxury Yacht Fleet
To date, Feadship has delivered a fleet of more than 425 vessels, the majority of which have been motor yachts. Wherever there are Feadship yachts for sale you will find customers of the highest profile seeking the highest quality. Feadship yachts have attracted numerous famous owners and have won countless awards for their quality builds and innovative projects. Between 1957 and 1986 they built three yachts for Malcolm Forbes, president of Forbes Magazine, including the iconic steel-hulled THE HIGHLANDER, which is said to have inspired Henry Ford II into commissioning the 109-foot (33.2m) SANTA MARIA (1963).
Since then they have been responsible for the build of iconic vessels the likes of the 221-foot (67.3m) NEW HORIZON L (which at the time of her launch in 1983 was one of the most expensive yachts ever built), 172-foot (51m) GALLANT LADY (2007), the 154-foot (46.6m) AZTECA (1983), the 282-foot (86m) ECSTASEA (2004), the 255-foot (78m) VENUS (2012), the 324-foot (99m) MADAME GU (2013), the 333-foot (101.5m) SYMPHONY (2015) (the biggest ever Feadship built), the 301-foot (92m) AQUARIUS (2016), the 274-foot (83.5m) first eco-friendly superyacht SAVANNAH (2016), the 241-foot (73.6m) explorer-style SHERPA (2018), the recently delivered 305-foot (93m) LADY S, and the most secure superyacht in the world, the 203 foot (62m) SEA OWL .
In order to protect the Feadship pedigree, the renown luxury yacht builder recently launched their own Refit & Services facility. Combining all the services previously offered by the individual Feadship yards, the new company offers major refits in the Netherlands and has partnered with four leading yards in the Mediterranean and US for services. To continue the protection of the Feadship heritage, Feadship also formed the Feadship Heritage Fleet. Uniting the owners of classic Feadship yachts around the world, the association is restricted to owners of registered Feadships built more than 30 years ago.

Can superyachts effectively carve their carbon emissions down to net zero? Perhaps. YETI wants to ... [+] give it a go with the sustainability index.
Is YETI a hairy Himalayan, or a beloved cooler? In this case, neither. This YETI is a five-year-old with a big idea. A science-based, data-driven one, first conceived five years ago by Feadship Senior Design Specialist Bram Jongepier, now embraced by most of the industry's leaders. This YETI, Yacht Environmental Transparency Index, is designed to score and compare yachts based on how well they play with others, namely, the environment.
“Zero doesn’t exist,” Jongepier stated, acknowledging that zero impact is simply impossible. Aiming at what is, in fact, possible, Jongepier explained, “You cannot walk on grass without some degree of impact, but you can do it sustainably if you give the grass time to recover.” And that, confirms Jongepier, is how we should treat our oceans.
The group meeting in 2019 to further plans for YETI, the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index, as ... [+] a way to score and compare yachts based on environmental credentials was embraced by representatives of the yachting industry's top groups.
“Sustainability is essential,” Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship Director/CEO of Royal Van Lent Shipyard. “There is pressure from our clients, there is pressure from ourselves, there is pressure from our workers, there is pressure from our children. It needs to be done,” Verkuyl states emphatically. And so, they did it.

As that original group took Jongpier's 2018 idea and put together YETI 1.0, the first index, they handed the reins to the Water Revolution Foundation for follow through. By 2020, operational yacht profiles were analyzed and defined based on an AIS study using 297 years of data from 100 yachts.
The YETI 1.0 index score is awarded based on data input, allowing future yacht designs to benefit ... [+] from the results and comparisons to be made.
By 2021, a sail correction was developed, a shore power study conducted, and upstream diesel assessed, adding important details to the index. By 2022, YETI 1.0 launched, adding an engine and generator study for the YETI database, and a fleet review was conducted for 60 yachts. Awaiting the arrival of YETI 2.0, yacht designers, builders, and buyers are embracing this tool to help make yachting more sustainable.
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, feadship’s strategic roadmap.
Feadship, long an industry leader, has a plan for net-zero CO2 emission and minimal local pollution impact by 2030. Their 84.20-meter full diesel electric yacht Obsidian is equipped with architecture to run on HVO. Well beyond regulatory compliance, the yacht achieved the net zero CO2 target in 2023. Feadship concept Dunes expects to reduce environmental impact by 95 percent compared to current minimum compliance for yachts using methanol fuel cells.
Rendering of the Feadship yacht Obsidian, which will operate with 27% less total environmental ... [+] impact than a yacht of similar size launched only five years ago if run on fossil fuel, and 60% less when using HVO.
It's The Fuel, Stupid!
In February of 2023, Feadship posted an informative article on sustainability , essentially creating a verbal Venn diagram focused on the intersection of superyachts and the environment using the above headline. Feadship lines out that efficiency gains and emissions reduction cannot make sufficient change. Since the laws of nature cannot be cheated, further reductions must come from using different fuels.
Feadship busts the myth that are no suitable alternative fuels available, or that their yachts cannot use them. Although harder to find and more expensive, HVO offers a real drop-in alternative that immediately reduces CO2 emissions. Volvo Penta says that their diesel engines have been compatible with HVO since 2016, seeing it as a stable, high-quality fuel suitable for marine power systems that can lower fossil CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent, depending on the feedstock.
HVO vs Other Fuels
HVO is hydrotreated vegetable oil, sourced from vegetables or animals. Sometimes it is simply cooking oil, recycled and hydrotreated to address bacterial growth and stability. Made from paraffinic oil hydrocarbons, it is also called renewable diesel or green diesel.
Like diesel, HVO has similar chemical and physical properties, but with its fossil-free composition and low carbon content, it is an appealing sustainable fuel option. HVO can be blended in any proportion with diesel fuel. With regard to HVO and biodiesel, they both come from the same feedstocks, but the hydrotreatment of HVO and improved oxidation stability make it a higher quality fuel.
HVO A Short-Term Solution
As Methanol and Hydrogen technologies improve, Feadship sees HVO as an immediate but temporary solution that can significantly lower the impact of a yacht due to energy use. As methanol and hydrogen fuel cells evolve in preparation for installation and use on board superyachts, the use of HVO offers a quick and easy way to improve a yacht’s environmental profile.
While it may be harder to source and may cost a bit more, Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship Director and CEO of Royal Van Lent Shipyard is adamant. "If we don't do it, we become complacent," Verkuyl concludes.
Heesen Yachts Also On Board with YETI
Erik van Mourik, Manager of Cost and Accounting at Heesen, has also been part of the original team working to get YETI up and running. Van Mourik stated that Heesen hoped to learn more about energy use while exchanging knowledge with other participants so they could understand where and how to save energy and improve their yachts.

Assigning tasks to different groups, the reports came back to provide data that would build YETI 1.o. Heesen noted that one discovery from this data found that the hotel load of a yacht is a key factor. Under power just 5-10 percent of the time, hotel loads operate continuously while the yacht is occupied, making things like air conditioning, electronics, lighting, and spa bubbles important to energy use.
Heesen is already bringing the YETI tool into its standard build process, putting it to use in comparing yachts, reducing emissions, and directing new designs for a variety of elements.
How To Score On YETI
Can YETI help yacht owners drive down their footprint? This science-based, data-driven index thinks ... [+] it can.
With the goal of stimulating technologies that reduce energy demand and enhance system efficiency, YETI’s comparison index embraces everything from flow optimization, propeller efficiency, and displacement to heat recovery, insulation, recycling, sustainable sourcing, underwater noise and more.
It is free to request a yacht score. For a reasonable fee, The Water Revolution Foundation will do a complete analysis of the results and provide owners with important ways to reduce emissions. A full description of the YETI index, its credibility, and how to obtain a score are laid out in the YETI brochure .

Billionaires are getting ready for summer with wildly spectacular superyachts
- Superyachts, the most expensive asset a billionaire can own, are pushing the boundaries of luxury.
- The boats, which cost eight or nine figures, are getting larger and include more features than ever.
- From massage rooms to basketball courts, here's what the world's richest want on board.
For many wealthy boat owners, a private spa is a must-have on board. A sauna is a nice touch. A Jet Ski or two makes days at sea way more fun. And if you don't have someone on board who can whip up a Michelin-star-worthy meal , you might as well stay on land.
In the world of massive yachts , there's no such thing as too much. After all, if someone spends eight or nine figures to design the vessel of their dreams — or at least $500,000 a week to charter one — more is more.
"Yachting. It's not rational; it's emotional," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, where dozens of superyachts — often defined as vessels over 30 meters in length — were on display.
And while there are certain classic features, such as jacuzzis and bars, what superyacht owners want is evolving, insiders at the show said. That might mean more crew members, more space for helicopters, or more water toys, but might also include manicure salons and putting greens.
"The bar of what is the baseline expectation has increased exponentially just over the last four or five years," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. Clients are "spending more time on the boat and really wanting to extend the lifestyle they lead on the shore."
A lot of this can be chalked up to the pandemic. Superyacht purchases and charters spiked as life and luxury travel on land screeched to a halt. While the market has moderated slightly, the number of superyachts on order — 1,166 as of September, according to Boat International's Global Order Book — is still above pre-pandemic norms.
"What the pandemic really showed is that the appetite for being out there at sea, sort of living the marine lifestyle, is still as valid as ever," Kurtén said.
That means there's a lot of money on the water. The total value of the 203 superyachts over 30 meters delivered last year was $6.4 billion, according to data from SuperYacht Times. New custom builds from the world's most prestigious shipyards — Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco , Benetti — can run into the hundreds of millions. Even used superyachts at the Palm Beach show cost as much as $75 million.
And it's not just traditional buyers like retired wealthy couples looking for a place to relax or celebrities looking for a place to party away from the paparazzi. New clients are often younger and have families, so want areas to work and watch movies . They also want pricey water toys, access to fitness equipment, or even pizza ovens for picky eaters.
"This would've never happened in the nineties," said Giovanna Vitelli, the vice president of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts. "You would go with your beautiful woman, Champagne — the idea of yachting was much more showing off with your jacuzzi and things like that."
Pure opulence has made room for function.
When Benetti's Nabila set sail in 1980, its 50-person crew, gold-and-diamond-encrusted interiors, and lavish parties captured headlines and even inspired the Queen song "Kashoggi's Ship."(Seven years later, Donald Trump bought Nabila for $30 million , renaming her the Trump Princess.)
"Life on board was considered very formal — big formal dining rooms, boats were high on the water, you would be segregated from the rest of the world," Vitelli said, remembering another client who insisted on a replica of the Sistine Chapel above the dining table.
But the ostentatious, palatial-like interiors that used to be highlighted in yacht brochures have made way for lists of more functional features .
Related stories
Rather than esoteric novelties like an extra-large safe for rifles that one builder had to construct per a Russian yacht owner's request , the superyachts on display at the Palm Beach show featured basketball courts, saunas, and ice baths.
Owners want elevators and luxury gyms. Pampering options, be it a massage room, manicure station, or a professional-grade facial machine, are a dime a dozen. Some bathrooms have fancy Toto toilets, which can cost around $20,000.
Sterns (that's the back of the boat) used to be built high to guard guests' privacy. Now, they're built as "beach clubs" — an open swim platform.
And what good is a massage room if no one on board can give one? Many superyachts can hold twice as many crew members as guests, if not more. One broker, representing a boat that didn't have a masseuse, said it could be quite a "tricky" issue because if a charter wants one, they have to find someone who can massage guests and "pull their weight with the crew."
"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," Kurtén said.
Of course, a crew comes at a cost . Most are considered full-time employees, requiring salaries and benefits like health insurance. Captains, first mates, and chief engineers often make six figures a year. That's without tips; a charter guest will typically spend six figures on gratuities for the crew who worked during a weeklong vacation.
For the superrich, there must be room for toys.
It's not just the onboard amenities that count. What's known as "toys" in the industry — water slides, eFoils, Jet Skis, and underwater scuba diving jets — are popular, and costs range from merely hundreds of dollars (banana boats) to millions ( submersibles , which are still popular despite the recent tragedy).
" Tenders and toys, the sky seems to be the limit," Kurtén said. "More is more."
Of course, if you can't fit all those toys in the yacht's storage space, you can just use another boat. Jeff Bezos' support yacht is a superyacht in itself, measuring 75 meters and costing tens of millions of dollars. (His main yacht, Koru , cost a reported $500 million.)
Support yachts are also faster, meaning the crew can get to a destination first and set up the Jet Skis, seapools, and the like, Dazert said. "By the time the owner arrives on the main yacht, everything's set up, and he can go and have fun."
Even tenders, the smaller vessel that brings guests from the ship to the shore, are getting glow-ups. The Nero, a 90-meter beauty available to charter for about $500,000 a week and modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship, has custom-built tenders to match the design. The most expensive ones often cost seven figures. Nero has three.
"It used to be a tender was a tender," Jeffrey Beneville, who handles yacht insurance at NFP, told BI. "Now they're called limousine tenders. Think of an incredibly luxurious gondola that's got a hard top so nobody's hair gets mussed when they're being dropped off at the Monaco Yacht Club ."
One thing that clearly hasn't changed in superyachting: showing off. If the boat next door at the marina has an indoor-outdoor cinema, it's natural to want one too. Ditto a wine cellar or helipad.
"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Vitelli, whose company is behind the Lana yacht Bill Gates chartered for a birthday party three years ago, said. "You push it a little more."
And that's a boon for yacht makers and brokers catering to the superrich.
"Our job is to make clients' dreams come true," Kurtén said.
