We had waited to try The River House because of early disappointing reviews. When the reviews improved we decided it was time to try it. We are finding most new restaurants need time, sometimes quite a bit of time to get their footing. We started... with excellent drinks at the bar. The pineapple martini was delicious and happy hour price at $10.00 was a bargain. My husband's Glenlivet scotch also a good price. We asked for a specific table, and although the restaurant was empty the hostess could not guarantee it. It was not reserved so we were puzzled by this. That was not what I expected, but we got it. Our server Kevin was fabulous. He knew the menu and was able to advise us about anything we wanted to know. I started with lobster bisque and my husband the heirloom tomato salad, both very good. We both had the Wagyu filets and they were outstanding. Scalloped potatoes to share also delicious. We shared a hot fudge sundae for dessert. We found the prices to be reasonable for the ambience, white table clothes, quality food and professional service. My only complaint is they DO NOT enforce the dress code policy they have. This is a widespread problem throughout Nashville. Multiple people had shorts on. I pointed out a man with flip-flops to Kevin and he said, "he should not be here". I agree, why was he allowed in? The no hat policy had guys stuffing their ball caps in the pockets of their shorts as they walked through the dining room. I did not deduct from my 5 star rating because everything else was so good. If management wants people nicely dressed they need to do something about enforcing the policy they have. Why have it if you're not going to enforce it. We will return and hope to see changes. More
There are an abundance of both new and old restaurants in downtown Nashville - and I think The River House might be my favorite overall. Being a sister restaurant to Brick Tops - which is a well known Nashville area chain - you can always... count on excellent food and service. I've now been 3 times and each meal was perfect. It seems that many of the other downtown restaurants lack the consistency of River House when it comes to the food. I wish I lived next door to this place because I would literally go multiple times each week. More
This is apparently a new place in Nashville, close to the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Bridgestone Arena, and hotels. Great cocktail service, and a nice by-the-glass wine selection. I started with a classic wedge salad. Very good and generous servings of bleu cheese... bits in the dressing. The waiter suggested the grouper, with lemon butter and crab. Excellent! The La Crema chardonnay was an excellent accompaniment, and the pour was generous. Modern decor, quiet, and high ceilings. All in all, an excellent choice. More
My wife and I went to this place with expectation. First, we expected it to be expensive. It was exorbitant. Especially the beverages. Front side of house demonstrated reasonably competent wait staff. The food was at best mediocre. We ordered a souffle appetizer. It was... dead cold. Back to the kitchen. Later it appeared and was hot. Wife has always loved Dover Sole. When it arrived it was so grossly overcooked it looked like leather. Sure enough it was inedible. Figuring they couldn't screw up prime rib and baked potato I went for it in spite of the price. On arrival the beautifully decorated baked spud was dead cold and so was the meat. Back to the kitchen. When re-presented meat was at least medium and still not hot. It also had an odd brown color. Sous-vide was the comment from the server. Potatoe was not hot either. I lost my appetite and left my wife to deal with the bill. She sat and sat and finally asked to settle up. "Oh, it's taken care of". Well, they could have done her the courtesy of telling her instead of wasting her time as she languished in limbo. We would have been way better off with a fried bologna sandwich from Robert's Western World. Don't go there unless you a snob and have money to burn on food isn't very good. Good place to be "seen" though. I just wanted a good meal. More
When you can't wear a cowboy hat that costs $1600 in a Nashville restaurant, you know it's going to be a bad experience. If you tout Chilean Seabass on your menu, don't offer halibut as a substitute because you run out. Lastly, if a group... comes in and you can't separate a check, you have a management problem. Everything is digital. 3/4 of our party is in the food industry or work as meeting planners. HORRIBLE. Do not eat here. More
The food was excellent. The service could not have been worse. Our server Sam was arrogant, rude and lousy. He was training a staff member and I can only hope the lesson was titled how not to treat customers. On the other hand the young... lady who made our salad was excellent. Our wine glasses were never refilled and he dropped the dessert along with the bill as much to me say “Eat up and leave” We took the hint and left. More
I had an absolutely fantastic experience at The River House! I wanted to go somewhere within walking distance from the symphony, and this was literally right across the street...so very convenient if you have tickets there. I loved that the atmosphere was classy, quiet, and... intimate unlike the nearby bars. Those aren't my scene. The staff was very friendly and attentive. My meal was expensive, but well worth it in my opinion. I had the prickly pear margarita, the parmesan crusted halibut with lemon butter glaze on the side, the crispy brussel sprouts, and a hot fudge sundae with peppermint ice cream....all were AMAZING! The halibut was definitely the star of the meal though...it came out hot, had the perfect outer layer of crisp, and tasted like it was caught this morning. The lemon butter was a perfect compliment. This is a great choice for a classy, intimate date night! More
We met with family at River House for dinner. Adding two people to the reservation was a pain as the restaurant never returned any voice mails. The place was busy but drinks got to the table at a good speed. I ordered a bottle of... Sancerre and the waiter brought a Sauvignon Blanc. When I protested that I ordered something else, he tried to tell me "it is the same". He finally brought us the Sancerre. Side dishes were good, which helped as one if our group was a vegetarian and there wasn't a single vegetarian entree. Our Diver Sole got to the table cold. So all in all, not the best experience we had had at River House. More
We haven’t been back to The River house in quite a while. The great waiter we had the last time is no longer there. Luckily our server Cydne was great. We started with a Shrimp cocktail, which was very good. My husband wanted oysters but... they were very expensive for 1/2 dozen, so he skipped them. My lamb chops were delicious as well as my husband’s filet. Creamed spinach and scalloped potatoes were shareable and also very good. Cheesecake for dessert and wine, all good. The dining room is nice with white tablecloths. It’s also is not noisy so we really enjoyed that. This is a restaurant that will be on our restaurant rotation. Very nice evening. More
It was a party of 3 and we all ordered Wedge Salad, Steak, sides, and dessert. It was all delicious and the place was very clean, unlike every other restaurant we had previously visited. We decided on this place after reading reviews and it did... not disappoint. Also, the service was great especially the hand written congratulations card by the staff for the graduate we were celebrating. Will definitely be back on my next trip to Nashville! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area to stop by an have a nice meal at the wonderful steakhouse.... nice bar too! More
Booked for dinner with my lady, it seems popular with the business/professional people. A relaxed atmosphere with plenty of staff who were efficient and polite. We had a dink at the bar first and our cocktails were good, plenty of customers eat at the bar... too. Our table toward the back of the restaurant was fine, quiet and able to hold a conversation. We both ordered steaks which were cooked as requested, very tasty but let down by the addition of too much salt during the cooking process. Overall not a bad experience, pricy but that wasn’t a shock. More
Our food was expensive but very good. We had a wonderful meal and our waiter was very friendly without being invasive/overbearing for our meal. We enjoyed people watching during our meal as people on the street walked by. It was nice and quiet inside while... at the same time still feeling trendy and fun. The staff made my husband a really nice birthday card and put a candle in his dessert too. If you want a fancy meal for a nice occasion here’s a go to spot in Nashville! More
Always like to try out an nice steakhouse on holiday and The River House was a short walk from our Downtown Hotel and looked a nice place so we gave it a go. I was impressed with the setting, ambience and the welcome. There were... plenty of good choices on the menu and despite all the meat choices I went for the Halibut (and added some crab on top!). It was cooked to perfection and the sides (spinach, potato gratin) were very nice too. As with most similar places the sides could easily feed two people. My friend had prime rib and lamb chops and those were well liked too. More
What a great find! The River House is a must if you’re looking for elevated food choices other than Nashville Hot Chicken and BBQ. Large dining area and bar so plenty of seating. I would recommend reservations, though. Nadia was our server and was engaging,... attentive and friendly. She provided outstanding service. The food was delicious. My husband and I shared a tableside prepared caesar salad. Francois made a perfect caesar salad. We were given two popovers to go along with the salad. I had the dover sole, and hubby had the ribeye. We shared the creamy whipped potatoes. My dover was moist and flaky, the ribeye perfectly cooked to medium rare, and the potatoes melted in my mouth. My husband ended with a good bourbon and I had a perfectly frothed cappuccino. I highly recommend this restaurant. More
If you like bricktops, you will love this place. You don’t often see beef Wellington on the menu and it was fantastic and perfectly cooked. And I’m not sure why it’s only four stars but I’m sure the five star reviews will catch up.
