The Yacht Refit Guide: Tips and Realities

yacht refit interior

Although owning a yacht is a fantastic pleasure, these majestic ships also need a lot of care, which necessitates frequent trips to the yard for refit or maintenance.

A yacht refit is a significant undertaking that needs excellent management, budgeting and solid scheduling of the participating crew and contractors, whether performing a comprehensive overhaul or simply a few cosmetic and system modifications.

What is a yacht refit?

In accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines, the team will:

  • oversee every stage of construction
  • keep an eye on the technical and financial performance of the contractors
  • plan all surveys
  • handle all paperwork related to classification, flag, and technical regulations
  • and eventually launch and deliver the boat that you need and want.

Experience in yacht refit project is very important

The team has a wealth of expertise dealing with the daily challenges associated with operating large yachts. Choose a project management team has the qualification to offer a full range of yacht management services, offered in a variety of packages in order to suit one owner’s demands.

What types of yacht refit can be done?

yacht refit interior

Examples of refits of yachts refit that can be done :

  • Restoring: preserving an old wooden boat
  • Modernizing: Using modern systems, technologies, and styling
  • Customizing: Making changes to the yacht according to the owner’s desires and wants
  • Modifying: Modifying the yacht to win a competition.
  • Replacing or adding: Adding new equipment or replacing the old deck with a new one.

How to start a yacht refitting project?

Start by considering the main purpose of the work and what you hope to gain from the renovation. The main works will determine the main refit timeframe and the facilities required, but additional wish lists can typically be accommodated.

By distinguishing necessary work items from those that don’t take priority, you may clearly define the work’s scope and order of importance.

Prioritize anything that interferes with a vessel’s ability to operate safely. Additionally, anything that compromises the integrity of the vessel, such as exterior paint coatings, tank coatings, water leaks, etc., should not be put off since if they are they will wind up being very expensive to fix and will ultimately reduce the asset’s overall worth.

Any significant project that will affect the critical route needs to be prioritized in addition to any required tasks. For instance, they can be full paint, teak decking, interior renovation, or additions. This will constitute the procedure’ initial step in the quotation. The second stage consists of optional tasks that can be completed in the allotted time.

Understand the owner’s requirements in terms of cost, time, and quality. If quality is a given, then putting deadlines first might jeopardize the budget and timetable.

Know the Resources of your shipyard before refitting your yacht

Each shipyard has its own specialities, and they are not all made equal. If the shipyard is taken away from its core capabilities, we cannot expect a wonderful outcome. It can be beneficial to choose the shipyards you use with care.

A very frequent mistake is to assume that anyone working in the refit industry can guarantee the resources required to complete the job. A second possible mistake is to neglect to confirm this crucial detail. Once they obtain the firm contract, many of these setups — effectively the retrofit brokers — quickly look for subcontractors to carry out the work on their behalf and frequently offer extremely low prices. They frequently provide simple amenities, and sometimes not even these.

Keep On Budget : The Hardest Task of a Yacht Refit

You must constantly compare the amount of work completed to the percentage of money spent if you want to stay within your budget. However, it takes actual experience to realize that 80% of the budget has already been spent and only 50% of the work has been completed. Project management software is good at calculating how much money has been spent thus far versus the budget.

From the beginning of the job, the captain and shipyard project manager often meet. They confirm and agree on how much has been accomplished. The sooner you notice the slippage, the earlier you can remediate the steps. Quantifiable standards are necessary to assess the degree of completion, and they are crucial for projects involving paint and cosmetics.

Find a yard that will fix prices for work items so that they take on the financial risk and there are no hidden fees.

Get the Insurance and Firefighters Ready in Case Your Refit Goes Wrong

Insurance for shipyards is essential. To accommodate lateness, financial overruns, or any damage incurred in the shipyard, the contract’s specifics must be unquestionably clear. Check your policy to see if it covers situations involving “hot work,” such as welding, as some do not.

Similarly, due to the nature of the work, fires can break out at shipyards. Thus, check that the shipyard has top-notch firefighting capabilities. Conduct staff fire drills on a regular basis. Also, insist on crew and 24/7 watch schedule vigilance throughout the yacht refurbishment.

Organize the Crew For Your Refit

yacht refit interior

During the shipbuilding period, strategically organize your workers. Different crew departments are subject to varying workloads during shipyard seasons. The interior team has more downtime because they are primarily in charge of preventing damage to the yacht throughout the refurbishment and performing stock takes, etc.

The engineers, on the other hand, are typically busiest during this time of year. During a shipyard period, stewardesses, deckhands, and chefs, frequently have free time to attend professional training programs. Typically, the project manager for your shipyard will know about it. They can tell you how many crew members you will need to help do the job with the team onboard.

Expect Delay in almost every refitting projects

The truth is that there are a ton of excuses why you might not be ready on the scheduled day. When planning, take this into account and provide backup plans. Add at least 10% to account for unforeseen circumstances.

We work in real life. You can only apply so many coats of varnish each day or each week. If it is an international shipment, you may also have to consider the delay of parts. Further, you have to take care of the holdup of international shipments in customs, or the fabrication of a part when one cannot be found.

How much does a yacht refit cost?

yacht refit interior

The price of refitting a boat varies greatly, depending upon what renovations you need. A comprehensive retrofit for a superyacht (one that is longer than 120 feet) can go from $300,000 to $1 million. The price of retrofitting a 60-foot personal yacht ranges from $60,000 to $250,000.

To only renew the rigging of a 50 feet boat, the yacht refit may cost only about $20,000. If you want to change the look by replacing the wood, paint or restrain it, the cost will go up to $300,000.

When picking the best refit provider, there are a lot of other aspects to take into account in addition to the services the yard provides.

For instance, determining a yard’s reputation and financial standing are crucial. After all, how can you be certain that they will be able to fulfil – and surpass – your expectations if they aren’t highly recommended by other customers?

In order to establish a long-term relationship with the vessel, investigate whether a yard offers competitive pricing. It makes sense to wonder if potential clients are dependable partners if it doesn’t want to enter into a mutually beneficial business partnership with them.

Clients should prefer a shipyard that aims to build a long-term connection with the vessel and provides ongoing value beyond a single yard period.

At Windward Travels, we provide all refit works for sailing or motor vessels – short- or long-term contracts. Get in touch for recurrent or preventive maintenance such as careening, revisions and class visits. Contact the team for daily repairs such as a normal repair or fixing a technical problem. Whether it is mechanical breakdowns, piping, hull damage, air conditioning, home automation, call us during emergencies at any time of the year.

5 Yacht Interior Designers To Consider For Your Next Refit Or New Build

The best yacht interior specialists..

The world of superyacht interior design deserves its own Netflix series. Seriously. It’s a high-class, ultra-luxury, competitive business that turns a small idea into a masterpiece. A superyacht interior should have equal parts wow-factor and functionality to elevate the boat. It takes a particular eye for art, detail, layout, and innovation to be a top name in (any type of) design industry.

For most firms, designing a superyacht is a personal experience. They’re masters at balancing a thousand different elements to create a single, elegant outcome. Elite design studios have the skills, talent, and intuition to create a layout, design, and decoration that wins awards. We already highlighted impressive yacht interiors , but who are the teams behind scenes? Here are 5 yacht interior designers to consider for your next refit or new build.

Interior design by Hot Lab onboard Hull #4 of the Numarine 32XP

Italians have an eye for art and design, and award-winning design firm Hot Lab seamlessly integrates sophisticated detail into their work. Their interior designs are sharp, stylish, and modern. Over the years, Hot Lab has received several international awards, including World Superyacht Awards and Showboats Design , World Yachts Trophies, and Finest Interior Awards . The studio has solid relationships with both Italian and foreign shipyards and works together on both custom and series-produced yachts.

A great example of interior design by Hot Lab is on Hull #5 of the Numarine 32XP (available for a Summer 2022 delivery). The studio incorporates clever lighting throughout the yacht to give it a bright atmosphere that highlights materials from Armani Casa and custom marbles in greens and blues.

Contact Denison yacht broker Alex G. Clarke to inquire about the Numarine 32XP.

2. Giorgio Cassetta

Interior design by Giorgio Cassetta onboard the Spritz 102

Italian superyacht designer Giorgio Cassetta is the dark night of yacht design. He flys under the radar yet he’s worked on some of the biggest and most stunning yachts in the world. His designs have personality, with a flare of timelessness and functionality that instantly makes you appreciate the setting. Past clients include Bennetti and Cigarette Racing, but he’s currently working with Alpha Yachts to design custom new build yachts.

Boutique shipyard Alpha Custom Yachts worked with Giorgio Cassetta to create an elegant interior for the Spritz 102 . According to Cassetta, the yacht has the feel of a Miami villa combined with great functionality. When inside the yacht, guests are never disconnected from the environment. The installation of the windows ensures constant visibility of the water and sky, even from the bed. The effect is particularly stunning in the full-beam owner’s cabin where the windows are oversized and less than half a meter above the water.

Contact Denison yacht broker David Johnson to inquire about the Spritz 102.

3. Gregory C. Marshall

Interior design by Gregory C. Marshall onboard CRESCENT LADY

Gregory C. Marshall, Naval Architect Ltd. is a Canadian-based yacht design firm that has built a reputation as one of the top naval architecture firms in the world. The interior of CRESCENT LADY , a 117’ Crescent 2020, is a Gregory C. Marchall design. Natural light floods into the interior space from expansive windows throughout the yacht. Inside, you’ll find clean, contemporary styling, which is complemented by high-quality joinery and modern fabrics and soft goods. Gregory C. Marchall created an interior that will stand the test of time onboard this Crescent 117, whose owner is accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin for the purchase of the yacht.

Patrick Knowles and his team apply their skills to ensure innovative creativity, attention to detail, and commitment to on-time delivery. Their ability to listen, understand, interpret, and transform ideas into results exceeds client expectations.

You may recognize a Patrick Knowles Design onboard REVIVE, a 150’ Richmond that was sold by Will Noftsinger and Chris Daves in March 2021. It’s one of the last (and some may say, the best) Richmond yachts ever built. In 2019, the second owner spent roughly $2 million making REVIVE perfect, and that included a completely new interior decor package by Patrick Knowles Designs.

5. Reymond Langton

Interior Design by Reymond Langton onboard ARKADIA

You’ll know a Reymond Langton design when you see it; the British design studio applies innovation, inspiration, and functionality to their work. Most notably, ARKADIA (formerly known as Project TRITON) a 50-meter new construction Heesen , boasts an elegant interior designed by Reymond Langton.

Yacht Interior Designers Guide: To Refit Or Not To Refit

Having spent quite a bit of time at various shipyards this first couple months of 2019, I am noticing that the yards are buzzing with refits and showing no signs of slowing down.

Why the refits? We are continuing to see yacht buyers who are interested in customizing a yacht but are unwilling to wait several years or pay the financial premiums that come with building a new custom yacht. If this is the case, an ideal solution would be a brokerage yacht that is purchased with a refit in mind.

A yacht refit can give an existing vessel an entirely new identity more expeditiously and more cost effectively. Great value can be achieved from successfully refitting an existing yacht to the buyer’s personal tastes and requirements. Either from the outset of ownership or during, a refitted yacht can exponentially add to the yachts aesthetic value, the buyer’s on board experience, and to the safety of their family and crew.

yacht refit interior

Yacht refit options range from minimal to massive.

Just about anything is possible with a yacht refit, allowing total customization within the yacht’s hull structure. One of the first steps is to determine what type of refit the vessel requires.

Does the yacht require a major refit, or “gut-n-chuck”? A “gut-n-chuck” consists of structural changes to exterior decks, walls or stairs, upgrades and repairs to the vessels mechanical and electrical systems, lighting, audio visual, plumbing, overheads, space planning, built in furnishings, mill work, solid surfaces, appliances, hardware, loose furniture, upholstery, window treatments carpet, wall paper, plus all of the soft goods, art and accessories. You can read about one of our most current extensive and highly custom yacht interior refits 142’ Christensen Lady Bee Refit: Striking A Balance Between Design & Desire on our Blog.

yacht refit interior

Or does the vessel require a minor yacht interior refit, or “fluff-n-puff”?  A “fluff-n-puff” includes fabrication and installation of soft goods such as bedding, upholstery, window treatments, carpet, wall paper, headliner, loose furniture, art and accessories.

A client who was a lifelong boater decided to charter the 86’ Nordhavn, (named Cary Ali at the time) and immediately made the decision to purchase her. After spending some time on the 86’ Nordhavn VivieRae , he decided to build the larger 96’ Nordhavn VivieRae II . He engaged us to do a minor refit on the yacht to enjoy during the two year built process of the 96’ which he also hired us to design.

yacht refit interior

Sometimes an Owner, Owner’s Representative or Yacht Broker will request that a Yacht Interior Designer “fluff-n-puff” or even stage the interior of a yacht to assist with the sale.  This was the case with the 209’ Royal Denship Turmoil that we completed just in time for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. You can read more about staging in our blog post “Staging Yacht Interiors” .

The key to successfully refitting a yacht is the effective planning and correct execution of the plan.

The success of a yacht refit and the difference between a smooth project or one full of setbacks and frustration comes down to the plans and decisions made prior to beginning the refit.

The key players are the yacht interior designer, captain and shipyard who execute the plan; the designer making interior decisions, the captain and / or shipyard making mechanical decisions, and the owner that approves the financial and time implications.

Together, It is crucial for this team to prioritize goals, map out a course of action and create a plan that anticipates and considers any potential unforeseen issues that may arise. As work begins, unexpected surprises will need to be addressed promptly and methodically.

yacht refit interior

Realistic budgets can work to a Yacht Owner’s advantage.

The budget should be realistic and contain a contingency for unforeseen conditions.

The Owner should acknowledge their budget and be honest with their team, the Yacht Interior Designer and Captain. Some Owners are reluctant to divulge the actual budget to the designer. Setting a realistic budget will help an owner keep track of where their money is going and what it is going toward. The Designer would not want to give the Owner a Cadillac if they had a Bentley in mind or the other way around. The Owner must discuss the budget with the Designer and the Captain and determine how much money should be allotted for items such as the interior, paint, generators, etc.   A wish list should be created and future Owners and charter guests should always be factored in to maintain the yacht’s value. All of the experts on the team must be on the same page to determine if everything desired will fit into the budget.

It is what you don’t see that can cause unexpected budgetary issues.  To keep costs from creeping up during a yacht refit, quickly identify any additional costs or delays and address them. Almost anything can be done, it just may cost more time and money.

Born and raised in South Florida Pete grew up fishing and diving in the Atlantic ocean. It is hard not to gain a natural love and respect for the ocean for both it’s beauty and power. Understanding how the ocean deteriorates anything over time has helped Pete become a master at repairing it’s inevitable damage. Now, with over 25 years experience designing and building custom furniture and over 15 years in the marine industry; not many things surprise Pete when it comes to repair.

What about luxury you ask? Before the COVID shutdown, Pete enjoyed 5 years as production lead building the magnificent Ocean Alexander 70e Motoryacht CLICK HERE TO SEE THE END PRODUCT . This experience gave Pete the knowledge of all aspects of yacht construction.

“I take a lot of pride in my work. I’m good with customers, I understand their vision and can bring it to reality! If you can dream it I can build it from conception to completion!” Pete DeJong

Frequently Asked Questions

We can schedule an appointment as soon as today. Give us a call so we can learn your dream interior, goal time range, schedule and budget.

Every yacht refit and owner preference is unique. That is why we offer custom refits. Once we have an idea of material availability as well as the extent of renovations needed; we can determine a custom refit timeline for your specific project.

Absolutely, in fact, many yacht refits begin with the need for more storage. Our craftsman can design custom storage space throughout your yacht to decrease clutter and expand the cargo you can carry.

We keep close communication with the owner during the entire refit timeline. When a delay happens due to weather, materials, unforeseen damage under the surface or anything else that may cause more time to finish; we contact you immediately.

With the most up to date materials, high density foam, luxury vinyl, top of the line flooring and veneers.

Call us and let us design your refit!

Most boat and some yacht owners use a polypropylene synthetic carpet for moisture resistance, UV fade resistance and increased traction. These carpets are expensive for the low quality look and not as comfortable as wool carpet since it is a plastic material. For a yacht, carpet is common issue that needs repair or replacement. When I personally do a carpet removal and new flooring installation, I suggest Amtico or other luxury options that last and feel better than manufactured marine carpeting.

From Miami to Jacksonville; Cocoa Beach to Tampa. If you are concerned about getting to us, our shop is located in the Port Canaveral cruise ship port. Our port can accommodate any size yacht and we have a Premier Marina for private yachts up to 110'. Check out what The Ocean Club Marina in Port Canaveral has to offer on their official website https://oceanclubmarina-pc.com/

We have multiple manufacturers to choose from with a plethora of color options available. It has not been a problem for us in the past to match any vinyl color. We can also change your color with a full vinyl reupholster while matching and complimenting your existing finishes.

When you need a vinyl repair that requires matching the correct color, the timeline starts with the availability of stock in the color you need. When your color is in stock, we can complete a vinyl repair as fast as 1 day.

Sometimes, we can speed up the process with a full vinyl reupholster of the furniture, padding or full headline replacement. We can find vinyl colors to match and compliment your existing finishes without waiting for a perfect match to come back in stock.

Normally a few days. Especially if the entire window must be removed, rebedded and allow for proper cure time. Luckily in the Florida Sun, the curing process does not take long.

We repair yacht furniture damage as small as a ding or tear all the way to a full upholstery removal and replacement. We can custom mold padding and foam for indoor yacht furniture with custom upholstery options. For exterior yacht furniture, we suggest vinyl fabric to withstand the harsh elements. There are many soft and colorful vinyl options to choose from.

Absolutely! Not only do we have options for yacht carpet replacement, we offer luxury Amtico Flooring upgrades that are manufactured to be more durable for your yacht than hard wood & yacht carpet. There are so many finishes, colors and countless possible layering patters, including an authentic Teak look most yacht owners prefer!

Setag Yachts

Yacht refit.

One of the most common questions we are asked by potential clients is what we mean exactly when we talk about offering a yacht refit service.

A refit is not just a solution to your challenges – but instead it’s protecting your investment. A sensible way of buying, instead of solving a challenge once you’ve bought it.

The best way to understand our service is to think in terms of buying a house. When you buy a new house, what’s the first thing you do? You renovate, redecorate and revive the decor. In other words, you ensure that it is more than simply another house for you – it becomes your new home. And by doing this, you personalise it to your style and ultimately increase it’s value ready to move on in the future.

Bespoke luxury

It’s very unlikely that you will want to live with the previous owner’s colour schemes, furniture and taste in interior design. And yet this is exactly what many people do when they buy a pre-owned boat. It makes no sense: why would you sleep in someone else’s mattress and rely on outdated technology – be it the navigation system or a home entertainment that isn’t compatible with your requirements?

This is where Setag comes in.

Future proof your yacht

We offer a ‘Third Way’ for customers who previously only had the choice of buying new or compromising with a pre-owned boat that isn’t fit for their purpose.

Our design & refit service means you get the best of both worlds, truly adding value by ensuring your yacht is future proof – drawing upon the same talents who built your boat in the first place and upgrading it to tomorrow’s standard – bespoke according to your needs.

Protect your investment

There’s a lot of logic in refitting a yacht: firstly because it can create an environment of which you are the first to experience; and secondly because it makes economic sense, adding value to your yacht and protecting your investment – both your yacht and its refit when you come to sell.

And when you’re spending between half a million and £5 million on a pre-owned yacht, why wouldn’t you change it to the decor and the technology that suits you? Why would you compromise and settle for something that is second best?

That’s why a refit with SETAG Yachts makes sense.

When is it time for a refit?

The reasons for a design and refit project and the age of the yachts we have Remastered, are as varied as the vessels and the owners themselves. Generally, a refit can be carried out on a yacht between 1 – 25 years old and typically, the rework coincides with technical/engineering upgrades of which we cover.

Many owners love their yachts and how they look externally, and simply outgrow the interior. We can elevate any project, small or large and all within a very quick turnaround.

Fall in love with your boat all over again.

What is the cost of a refit?

There is a false impression about yachts that they only require a refit if they are on their last legs and are barely seaworthy. This simply isn’t the case – it should be seen as a way to futureproof your yacht and make it reflect your taste, personality and needs.

A refit by Setag is there to add value.

Considering a Design and refit project?

We look forward to realising The Art of The Possible with you.

Redefined by Setag

Each project is truly bespoke, catering to individual needs. If you are moving into a new house, you naturally want to renovate to put your own stamp on it – to make it feel like your home. So, why would you be happy to live with someone else’s taste when it comes to your yacht?

Yachting Life

To be a yacht owner is a very special feeling. To feel the freedom of being on the water, away from the pressures of everyday life, with no deadlines but those set by the sun, is a very unique type of escape. It offers you a sense of luxury that you can rarely attain from material products – the luxury of time and space.

With SETAG, you can make a huge difference when you buy something secondhand, maybe a bit tired and then you put all of this beauty in it and you create what effectively is a brand new boat. Completely to your own liking, your own standard...creating the perfect boat for us.
Brilliant concept...new boat look and feel at pre-owned prices - by the industry experts. Recycling at its best!
The great thing is, none of this is off the shelf - I love this boat and now she’s got her frock on...this is the best money I've spent.
If you want to redefine, refit and remaster your boat who better to do it than the people who designed it in the first place? "What a fantastic idea!"
We cannot recommend the SETAG team highly enough. If you love your current boat, then for a fraction of the cost to change it, have it SETAG’d. The SY branding certainly helped us obtain a premium price. We got what we paid for her in 2017 plus what we spent with you!
I have worked with Chris for over 30 years and I’m pleased to see him develop his own brand - along with likeminded people with industry-leading expertise. The future is bright for Setag Yachts and pre-owned yacht owners, who can now refurbish their vessels to today’s - or even tomorrow's standards.
That has been one of the key selling points for us – having that personalised service and having a boat that is unique to us – is standout in its own right. We are pretty blown away…very very pleased. I think it’s fabulous…it has transformed the boat.
The perfect way to open up a new market: the "true reflection of luxury". Setag gets it: simplicity and personalisation are key – with the depth of knowledge to deliver.
Setag are probably the only company who can carry out all the tasks as a ‘one stop shop’. Other yards were reluctant to price work and needed to subcontract many tasks meaning higher costs and longer lead times. If you are in any doubt speak to Chris and his team, they know boats like no one else.
We have been waiting for this quality of service: a comprehensive, professional refit that we can rely on – because of the pedigree of its staff, with over 200 years' experience in our market.
You have put Princess magic into our beloved Broom.
Never have I come across a more able collection of professionals in this market. We have complete trust in Setag, since its team has been in the business for as long as we can remember. We're very excited to welcome this specialist refit company into our portfolio.

Aluminium repairs, maintenance, electricity.

With 20+ years of working with aluminium, we know this material inside and out. Got a dent from a buoy? Hit the rocks in Norway? Don’t worry. The experts that build our yachts are the same people who will fix yours.

Unless reclaimed, teak is no longer considered a sustainable choice for decking material. Luckily there are many other options available today. From anti-skid coatings and shot blasted aluminium to man made composite materials like Esthec which is durable, maintenance free and is available in various colours and custom options.

An overhaul, winterising or a brand new engine in your sailing or motor yacht? No problem. Our experienced engineers can handle any type of engine, whether it is new, used or refurbished.

From a new lick of paint and new upholstery to a complete makeover of your interior. We will be happy to discuss the various options and price tags to meet your needs. Our carpenters are true interior specialists. They can turn any type of wood into trims, decks, cabinets, and al sorts of furniture.

For many of us, finding the time to go sailing is already hard, let alone finding the time to work on your boat. Many boat owners opt for winter storage in combination with annual maintenance.

Painting your yacht requires precision. Our team of skilled professionals is equipped with the latest tools and techniques to ensure a flawless finish every time. We use only the highest quality paints and materials and take great care to protect your vessel or property during the painting process.

Since the beginning of 2023, our new painting halls have been ready for use. Besides the fact that we will make extensive use of it ourselves, we also offer opportunities for third parties to perform painting work here. Click here for more info about our painting service, painting venue and renting possibilities.

Our mast rigger Jan is always happy to perform a thourough inspection of your mast and rigging. After inspection we provide a report for the insurance company or the new owner.

On aluminium yachts in particular, extra care should be given to the electrics. Are you unsure or have you discovered electrolysis? We would be pleased to check your yacht and make the necessary amends.

Customer Care

Our commitment doesn’t stop after delivery. Carefree ownership is all-important to us. Our subsidiary KM Yachtservices provides peace of mind by keeping your yacht in peak condition and supporting owners with a full range of exceptional services.

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told <em>Robb Report</em> during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.</p>

Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located.  “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told <em>Robb Report</em>. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting. </p>

The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.</p>

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Nero,’ a 295-Foot Superyacht Inspired by a 1930s Classic

Nero is a yacht styled on JP Morgan's Corsair series from the 1930s.

It’s described as the “most head-turning yacht on the planet,” and this week, the classically styled Corsair Yachts Nero is the undisputed headliner at Palm Beach International Boat Show.

At just under 300 feet long, the beautiful hull is too lengthy for the docks at the main show area on the West Palm Beach waterfront, so it is being displayed to potential charter clients in the nearby Safe Harbor Rybovich superyacht marina.

Nero is at the show to entice charter clients (through Burgess Yachts) for summer cruises in the Med and winters in the Caribbean. With Nero’s British captain David McMorrow as our guide, Robb Report took a tour of this iconic superyacht, discovering fascinating facts about this so-called “Spirit of Corsair,” based on financier J.P. Morgan Jr.’s series of Corsair yachts in the 1920s and 30s.

Here are eight unknown facts about this remarkable vessel.

One Man’s Success Leads to Another Man’s Dream

Back in 2004, the British videogame entrepreneur and yachtsman Neil Taylor set out to find and restore a classic motoryacht in the style of American banking legend J.P. Morgan Jr.’s series of yachts named Corsair . Unable to find a suitable candidate, he took the bold decision to build his own, styled on Morgan’s last Corsair, the 350-foot Corsair IV (above) launched in 1930. Such was Taylor’s commitment and passion to the project that he designed both the yacht’s exterior and interior layout himself, only turning to U.K.-based IMT Marine Consultants for the naval architecture and hull design. Built under tight secrecy, the steel-hulled Nero , as the yacht was christened, was launched in 2008.

A Shipyard Was Created to Build It

Taylor had hoped to use a European yard to turn his dream into reality. But in the end, he formed his own company, Corsair Yachts, and signed a deal with China’s Yantai Raffles Shipyard to rent its entire facility and 400-strong workforce. He also pulled together a team of 30 specialists who had previously worked with pedigreed builders Lürssen, Benetti, and OceanFast for the most technical work. It was not a quick process: Taylor micro-managed every stage of the yacht’s construction, which took over four years.

Plenty of Power and a Fake Smokestack

Nero is powered by a pair of slow-spinning, commercial-grade MaK/Caterpillar diesels, rated 2,333 hp each. Flat out, it can run at 16 knots, though Capt. McMorrow prefers to cruise at a more sedate 11 knots. With the fuel tanks topped off with 46,000 gallons of diesel, the yacht has a range of over 4,500 nautical miles, burning just 118 gallons an hour at 14.5 knots. To keep it stable in those Atlantic swells, the yacht has four Naiad fin stabilizers, a full keel and extensive ballasting. “She’s incredibly stable even in the roughest of seas, and remarkably quiet,” says McMorrow. As for that distinctive yellow and black funnel on the top deck, it’s just for decoration.

A Fitness Lover’s Dream

yacht refit interior

As part of Nero ‘s major refit in Genoa, Italy, in 2021, the cozy sundeck den, or “snug,” was transformed into a state-of-the-art gym. It’s filled with the latest Technogym equipment, including a multi-function Kinesis machine, treadmill, cross-trainer and cardio bike. Steps away is the 18.7-foot-long resistance pool on the foredeck, along with a Jacuzzi at the stern. Naturally, one of the crew is a certified physical trainer. The previous location of the gym is now a beauty salon and massage area. Nero ‘s teak-covered top deck, at over 200 feet long, makes a perfect jogging track. And when the yacht is under way, that forward pool is drained and becomes a garage for the yacht’s 16-foot Nautica RIB.

The 2016 Refit That Changed Everything

yacht refit interior

When Neil Taylor sold Nero in 2014, reportedly to Irish billionaire and Digicel telecommunications founder Denis O’Brien, the yacht headed to the MB92 shipyard in Barcelona for an eight-month major interior refit. The yacht’s original interior designer, Laura Pomponi of Italy’s Luxury Projects, oversaw the process, and it involved an exhaustive process of refinishing all the golden, high-gloss walls, ceilings, furniture, and joinery to a more contemporary, Hamptons-beach-house style. That meant many months of varnish removal and complex lime-washing. The refit also included stripping over 4,000 pieces of brass hardware and refinishing them in silver. Reupholstering Nero ‘s multitude of chairs and sofas involved well over a mile of new fabrics.

Toppled Over in a Drydock

yacht refit interior

Preparing for routine maintenance work at the Amico & Co dry-dock in Genoa, Italy, in 2019, Nero tipped over on to its port side while the dry-dock chamber was being emptied. According to a report at the time by Italy’s Liguria Nautica website, six crew members suffered minor injuries after a hull support in the dry dock collapsed under the strain of Nero ‘s weight. Despite the 30-degree angle, the vessel was said not to have touched the concrete walls and was successfully refloated.

The Owner’s Suite Spans Two Levels

yacht refit interior

“It really is fit for a king, and to me it’s the jewel in Nero ‘s crown,” says McMorrow, describing the vessel’s sprawling owner’s suite. Located on the main deck, it spans the yacht’s full beam and features an adjoining lounge on one side with a big-screen TV, and, on the other, twin, over-stuffed sofas, and a private den with a desk and conference table. Separate his-and-hers marble-lined bathrooms have huge walk-in closets and dressing rooms. A staircase leads up into Nero ‘s private observation lounge with access to the pool on the foredeck.

The Mini-Me Tender

yacht refit interior

A classically styled yacht requires a classically styled tender. So Nero ‘s elegant 31-foot ’30s-style wooden launch was built by Corsair Yachts in China by the same craftsmen who constructed the mothership. And when Nero went in for its latest refit in 2021, the tender also got a new coat of paint and varnish, new upholstery and a mechanical overhaul. “It’s a piece of art. Guests love seeing this tender as it approaches a dock for pick-up,” says McMorrow, noting top speed is an impressive 30 knots. The launch features mahogany construction, teak decks, and a low-profile cabin to keep guests protected from the elements.

85m Lürssen yacht Eye (ex Ace) transformed after multi-year rebuild

The 85-metre Lürssen superyacht Eye (ex Ace ) has been photographed for the first time in the Port of Gibraltar following a multi-year rebuild that has left her unrecognisable.

The superyacht checked into refit repair yard MB92 in spring 2022, likely following her sale to a new owner. She was renamed Eye in January 2024 and emerged from the yard just last month.

Details of the rebuild have been kept tightly under wraps, but recent sightings confirm a complete exterior overhaul – including the removal of her trademark superstructure arches and "eye" balconies.

Eye was delivered by the German yard in 2012. The yacht is known to accommodate 10 guests across five cabins, with each cabin decorated with different themes including Art Deco, classical, contemporary nautical and French Provençal. The master cabin sits on the main deck aft and benefits from a private terrace.

Onboard highlights include a cinema and a gym on the main deck, while a library with a fireplace, a piano and a games table can be found on the upper deck. However, the extent of the work done on Eye 's interiors is yet to be revealed.

This follows the 91.5-metre Oceanco Tranquility 's light refit at MB92 last year .

The three-month stint left her in good condition for the most recent summer charter season and included a number of cosmetic upgrades.
