Learn How To Sail

Few travellers can resist setting sail on the sparkling Mediterranean when in Barcelona! Here, I share the best sailing yacht tours , catamaran trips and motor boat tours , as well as private boat charters , and some unforgettable combined activities – such as Ferrari drive & sailing!

Life on the ocean waves! That’s what it’s all about. Blues skies, salty air, and the majesty of the Mediterranean unfurling in front of you as you sail out of Barcelona’s ports thirsty for adventure. (Hopefully with a copy of  Moby Dick and a bottle of rum tucked inside your cabin for good measure).

Barcelona is one of the best bases in the world for sailing holidays, with its clement weather , modern marinas and the wealth of picturesque coastal towns along the Costa Brava. Those with a week or so to spend at sea might also note the city’s proximity to the magical Balearic islands,  Majorca , Menorca and  Ibiza .

For the casual tourist … there are plenty of great sailing activities on offer in the Catalan capital, which can be enjoyed in a single afternoon, or less.

While for the casual tourist, who doesn’t have time for a weekend, let alone a week, on a boat, there are plenty of sailing activities on offer in the Catalan capital, which can be enjoyed in a single afternoon, or less, thus allowing more time for all the other fun things to do in the city !

You can even combine sailing with other fun activities, like wine tasting, supercar drives or helicopter flights! I go into more detail towards the end of this article .

What’s on Offer? How to Choose a Sailing Tour!

When choosing a sailing tour the first choice is whether you want to hire a private boat (with skipper), for just you and your partner, or friends and family. This can be done from as little as €250 for a 3-hr sail on an 8 metre yacht, with prices rising for bigger vessels. More details later on this page .

For most people, I would suggest that booking a space on public tour makes more sense, as it’s a lot more affordable and still plenty of fun. Broadly speaking, we can divide public sailing tours into three categories:

Sailing Yacht Tours

Sailing yacht tours are perhaps the most authentic experience as your skipper will rely on wind-power to captain your vessel and you’re sure to feel the ocean spray once in a while too! Prices start at €39 per person on a 1.5 hour Sailing Trip , while the in-demand Sunset Sailing Trips start at €69.

Catamaran tours are steadier and more comfortable, and still use windpower for the most part, but the experience is closer to a boat cruise. They are more affordable and you will share the vessel with a larger number of people.

Boat tours typically take place on big steady diesel-powered boats such as the famous Golodrinas ferries, although luxury, RIB and speedboat tour options also exist for adrenaline seekers!

Yacht life…. making the most of the Mediterranean!

Boat tours are all very well, but true sailors understand that the real thrill of sailing is to harness the power of the wind and plough the ocean furrows. If you’ve been on a yacht once or twice before, you can usually help the captain by winching in some ropes, or even steering the helm. While those who don’t know their port from their starboard (and have little intention of learning) can dedicate themselves to drinking champagne  on deck and working on their tan.

1. Sailing Tour (1.5 hrs) with Vermouth

This is the number one activity from Barcelona’s number one boat company, Sailing Experience . Their professional skippers will take you out on an 11 person sailboat for a 1.5 hour spin on the big blue. You’ll leave from Port Olimpic and, looking back across land, you’ll be able to admire views of the Olympic Village, sun-kissed city beaches and the modern skyscrapers of Poblenou. And you’ll do all that with a delicious glass of Catalan vermouth in your hand, or beer, sangria, wine or soft drinks, if you prefer. This tour runs four times a day (9:30am, 12pm, 2:30pm and 4:30pm) every day of the year – even on Christmas day – and costs just €39-44 per person.

2. Sailing Tour with Brunch

Get your day off to wonderful start by combining some sunshine and bracing sea air with a delicious brunch of local pastries, ‘pica pica’ snacks and hot and cold beverages. Another of Sailing Experience ‘s most booked trips, this 2-hour cruise must be one of the best ways to start a day of sightseeing in Barcelona. The tour departs from Port Olimpic daily at 9:30am… but if you’re not a morning person, you can book the same experience with snacks and aperitif for 12pm, 2:30pm or 4:30pm. Best to reserve your space early, as some time slots will sell out.

3. Sunset Sail with Cava

Barcelona boasts some beautiful sunsets, and there are few places better to enjoy them than out on a boat with views back over the city’s rose-tinted skyline, glass of sparkling Cava in hand. The activity takes place on a 12-metre yacht with a maximum of 11 passengers, and also includes snacks and other beverages. After a hectic schedule of sightseeing, this is the perfect way to round off your day! For a little bit extra you can upgrade this experience to include live music on board (either Spanish guitar or live saxophone!). Keep reading for more info…

Click the links to reserve directly with the provider, Sailing Experience, Barcelona’s most popular yacht company. You will receive a confirmation email with all the details you need.

Sunset Sailing with Live Music

Price: €91 per person Duration: 2 hours Boat size: 11 people Availability: Every day, leaving around 1 hour before sunset Departs from: Port Olimpic

Catamaran tours are affordable, relaxed and fun, and their twin hulls make them steadier than yachts, so I would recommend this option if you are prone to any seasickness. Catamarans vary in size, often fitting between 30 and 100 people, so obviously they are less exclusive than taking a trip in a yacht, and you may have to sit on the netting, but they offer good value for money. (They are also the vessel of choice for epic parties, if that’s your thing !).

5. Small-Group Catamaran Tour (2 hrs)

A great option if you want a bit more exclusivity than the larger catamaran tours, this small group option hosts a maximum of 30 people on board a gorgeous red-and-white catamaran, and even includes a free tapa (that’s singular of tapas!) and drink of your choice. Choose the day time tour and you can take advantage of a 30 minute swim stop and dive into the Mediterranean, or opt for the sunset cruise and enjoy the setting sphere. Reserve via Get Your Guide .

6. Sunset Cruise w/ Live Music (1.5 hrs)

It doesn’t get much more affordable than this catamaran cruise which costs less than €25 per person and even includes a live jazz concert on board. At 78 feet long this cat is big and spacious and you can buy a drink from the onboard bar with which to enjoy the sun setting over the Med. Available on Get Your Guide .

Barcelona boat tours come in a few different shapes and sizes, starting with a trip in the classic Golondrinas ferry.

7. Las Golondrinas Boat Tour

This affordable tour departs several times a day from the Port Vell (Old Port), near Las Ramblas, and takes you on a pleasure cruise along Barcelona’s coastline, past Barceloneta beach, all the way to the twin towers at the modern Port Olimpic, before heading back to where you began. This tour has been taken by 100,000s of travellers since it began back in 1888, and is still popular today. The tour takes place on a comfortable, large motorised catamaran (not a sailing boat!), departing several times a day. You can book via Get Your Guide .

8. Speedboat Tour

If you feel the need for speed, jump on this adrenaline pumping tour to skim over the Mediterranean like a black marlin who’s late for work. Your skilled captain is only too glad to show off some of the RIB speedboat’s acceleration and manoeuvrability, so if its thrills you’re after you should leave plenty satisfied. You can book via Get Your Guide . (Fancy a private speedboat instead? You can rent one from €195 per hour !).

15. Wine Tasting & Sailing

Probably my favourite of all the activities on this page, I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone with half a day to spare in Barcelona. There are a few different options here, but you can either set sail from Barcelona to the nearby Alella wine region, to enjoy a sumptuous wine tasting overlooking the sea, or you can do the winery first and then sail back to Barcelona, merrily tipsy as you recline on deck (which would be my preference!). For the other leg of the journey, you can choose private transport by car, or you can ride along the coast on an electric bike. (You can even choose to e-bike it both ways, but then you would miss out on the sailing!). Check out Get Your Guide, where you can select the best option for you .

For this activity you get to drive a 460hp Ferrari California around Barcelona, with the wind in your hair and the purring of a V8 engine under your bonnet. Afterwards you get to relax on a 1.5 hour sailing cruise, cocktail in hand. Prices start at just €110 for a combined 20 minutes Ferrari drive, plus 90 minutes of sailing. You can book the experience right here , or email us on [email protected] if you have any questions.

Your expert guide will reveal the secrets of Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, as well as the medieval legends of the Gothic Quarter, before you’re driven to Barcelona’s heli-port for an unforgettable helicopter flight over the Catalan capital. You’ll finish with a 1 hr boat cruise from the Port Vell. Great value at just €134.99 per person, all included. Book via Get Your Guide . Yacht Charter Companies

There are a number of yacht charter companies in Barcelona, from whom you can hire you a variety of boats, including sailing yachts, motorboats and catamarans. If you’re a qualified sailor you can leave a deposit and rent a yacht bareboat, ie. without a skipper/crew, and get going. However, most companies provide the option of hiring a professional captain to make sure your sailing holiday doesn’t end in you shipwrecking yourself on a desert island and being forced to grow a Tom Hanks-style beard.

Barcelona Yacht Charter

This leading private charter company, directly affiliated with Barcelona Life, has an enviable array of vessels to choose from – from 1 to 12 berth sailing yachts, top notch motor yachts, three catamarans and several historical yachts. You’ll definitely be the envy of the Costa Brava swanning along the Mediterranean in the Llaüt “Sant Ramon” from 1904. Virtually all of their vessels are available both for bareboat rental or with a skipper and/or crew and hostess. They can also arrange sailing day trips, boat parties and luxury cruises for large corporate groups . Whatever you need, email us on  [email protected]  and we’ll get back to you with a price quote.

yacht cruise barcelona

Sailing Holidays

Aspiring Buccaneers could even choose to spend a week or two in  Barcelona  learning the ropes (quite literally) on an RYA accredited sailing course that will have you hoisting, tacking and reefing up and down the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava.

Qualified sailors, meanwhile, can charter a yacht from Barcelona and take a leisurely (or not so leisurely) cruise around the Mediterranean, heading up to France or further down to Spain’s southern resort towns like Marbella.

We’re currently researching the best providers of sailing lessons and courses in and around Barcelona and the Costa Brava, where you can study for your  RYA sailing certificate , and become a qualified seafarer. We’ll be back to update this page shortly with this information.

Corporate Sailing Events

If you’re on this page looking for sailing activity for a corporate team building event then you’ve just struck gold. This sailing regatta allows up 400 people to take part, racing against each other on boats of up to 8 people. It’s a tonne of fun, and a great way to challenge your colleagues and also see them work together in a new way. Maybe that’s why Pepsi, Mars, Zurich, Unilever, DHL and Swarovski have all booked it for their staff in recent years. We work direct with the provider, with no mark up on the price, so just drop us an email on [email protected] with dates, group size, etc and you’ll hear back within 1 working day.

About the Author

Duncan the Author

Eleni Manoli

Hi Duncan, I am looking for a boat ride for two people as a gift for my boss, who is getting married and lives in Barcelona. Which one would you recommend? My boss and her partner are around 60 years old, so please take that under consideration, as they prefer things a little bit more comfortable. My budget for the both of them is around 220 EU, maybe stretching it to 250EU. By the way when I saw your picture I could not believe it. We met in Iguazu falls a few years back when my and my friend Agnes were travelling there. I have a few photos of the three of us when we went on the boat around the falls 🙂 Hope you are doing well and look forward to hearing back from you!

yacht cruise barcelona

Hey Eleni, small world! That was a lovely day at Iguazu! I’m checking out some boat options for you now, and will be in touch! x

I am looking for a private boat trip for 24 people.

We want to sail for 3 hours near Barcelona with music and drinks all-in.

We would like to leave on July 1, 2023 in the afternoon. Around 2:00 PM approximately.

Do you have a boat available and can you offer a total price?

Hi Bjorn, hopefully you saw the catamaran options my partners sent over!

Best way for private boat requests is to send us an email. Many thanks!

Hi Duncan, I am trying to find a way of crossing the sea from Barcelona to Palma, on a sailing boat. We want to get to Palma from London, by not flying, and by using as little CO2 as we can. Diesel ferry boats use the dirtiest fuel and end up not being any mor eco-friendly than flying! We can take the train to Barcelona but I can’t find a friendly sailor to take us across to Palma and collect us a week later for the return trip. In these days of ‘green tourism’ it seems like these sailing holidaly and party boats are missing a trick. Many people like us want to do the right thing for the environment but still travel leaving a smaller a carbon footprint as possible. Any ideas Duncan? There are two of us. My husband has some sailing experience so could help with ropes and things 🙂 Best wishes, Sonja (Thame, England)

I am not sure this service exists to be honest, but there are some sailing holidays that depart from Barcelona to Mallorca… you might want to run this page through Google translate for example, or get in touch with them to find out what is possible.

https://www.sailwiz.com/velero-mallorca-barcelona

I can also send your enquiry to my sailing partners, just in case they have any boats going out that way. What dates are you looking at?

Spain Travel Guide

During its long and fascinating history, Spain has done more to shape the modern world than any other country. Though nobody today would condone the actions of the Conquistadors in America, Spain did form the first major global empire and forever change the world map.

From Santa Cruz de Nuca in British Columbia down to Santiago de Chile in the far south, Spain left its footprint across the whole of the Americas. Yet the nation itself is relatively small, with a population or only 47 million, not all even identifying as Spanish or speaking Spanish.

Spain is in fact a divided nation. The northeastern autonomous community of Catalonia contains 8 million people who identify as Catalan not Spanish. As recently as 2017, this region attempted to become fully independent from Spanish rule. This region contains Barcelona, Spain’s second largest city, as well as much of Spain’s industry.

When visiting Spain, most people head first for three cities. In the north, Barcelona is the cultural and historical capital and the most popular destination. In the south, Granada is a focal point, featuring the ancient Moorish palace of the Alhambra. And in the center, you will find the capital city — Madrid. There are other wonderful places to visit in this diverse and culturally rich nation, notably Seville and Salamanca, but those three cities are by far the most interesting.

Traveling in the time of COVID

Like many destinations, some tours and visitor attractions in Spain have adopted special precautionary measures during the pandemic.

Face masks are mandatory in some locations, notably in enclosed public areas such as travel hubs and shopping malls. You are expected to supply your own mask and wear it when you enter buildings.

It is in your own interest to keep your distance from other visitors who are not in your family group or bubble. You are expected to keep your distance inside boats, coaches, train compartments, and other vehicles and when seated in restaurants.

At the time of writing, Spain welcomes visitors and visas are not required for US citizens. However, with the exception of children aged 12 and under, every person arriving in Spain must provide a negative COVID-19 test certificate (NEAR, LAMP, TMA, or PCR — NOT an antigen test) or proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days before entry using a vaccine authorised by the WHO or the European Medicines Agency. This certificate must be time stamped within 72 hours.

You can obtain the most up-to-date information directly from the Spanish government’s Spain Travel Health portal . During these relatively uncertain times, it is wise to also consult the US Department of State website for current travel advisories .

Airports & Entry

You can enter Spain by sea, land, or air. What works best depends upon where you’re coming from. However, if you are traveling more than a hundred miles, it is best to fly. It is cheapest and most efficient to arrive by airplane.

Spain boasts 47 airports, and most of them handle international flights. This is because there are so many popular tourist destinations, including many of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea that are popular clubbing spots for youths from across the whole of Europe.

When planning a journey to Spain, it is important to decide what cities you most want to see before flying and to compare ticket prices carefully. Because of the different airlines serving different airports, you will find an astonishingly broad range of prices.

It’s difficult to generalize due to competition between the airlines, but typically it’s much cheaper to fly into the two busiest airports in Spain: Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona El Prat . Direct flights to Granada, Seville, and Salamanca tend to be much more expensive.

Planning Tips

Spain is a fascinating country with a rich history and culture, which is why it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Europe. Here are a few specific tips to help you get the most out of your vacation.

If you have tips of your own about this beautiful country, please share them with other readers in the comments below.

Tip #1: Travel there for less

It is both easiest and most cost effective to enter Spain through one of the two most popular international airports — Madrid and Barcelona. Because they are such popular destinations, don’t just book a ticket with your favorite airline. Instead, shop around. To get the best flight times and cheapest rates, aim to book 3 months in advance.

Time of year is a major factor in flight prices. During the long summer vacation and Easter, flights cost much more due to the high demand. Planning your vacation outside of these two high seasons will save you a lot of money in flights and hotel rooms.

#2. Enjoy free tours

Though you will want to enjoy some tours that aren’t free, such as a Mediterranean boat cruise, you will find free walking tours in some cities such as Barcelona. For example, Free Walking Tours Barcelona offers a free 2.5 hour walking tour of the historic city center along streets laid out by Roman planners 2,000 years ago and lined with breathtaking Medieval buildings.

The expert guide will entertain you with information about the local history and culture as well as anecdotes about the many famous articles who have lived in Barcelona, such as Picasso and Gaudi. While not free, consider a scooter or segway tour of the Barcelona . Especially good for those who can’t walk far.

#3. Eat for less

If you’re staying in Barcelona, ask about the menú del día at local restaurants. This is a set price, 3-course meal with a drink offered weekday lunchtimes and occasionally on weekends. You can enjoy a complete traditional meal for as little as €15. Typically, the menú del día is not advertised, so you must ask.

There is also a menú del noche during the evening. This costs more than the lunchtime meal but still works out much cheaper than selecting dishes from the expensive menus found in tourist traps.

#4. Pay less for museums

Across Spain, many museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of every month. In Barcelona, this is the evening of the first Sunday. Time your vacation to coincide with the first Sunday and head for the most expensive museum you want to visit on that day.

#5. Book Ahead

There are many tours you can enjoy around major tourist attractions in Spain that provide you with transport and an expert guide and work out costing less than taking public transport and paying an entrance fee. However, you must book in advance to avoid possible disappointment because these tours are understandably often fully booked weeks ahead of time. This is especially important with the more popular tours like hot air balloon rides or helicopter tours of the city .

Restaurants & Eating Out

Spanish cuisine is strongly influenced by its rich history. You can find traces of Roman, Arabic, and Mediterranean dishes as well as imports from its former colonies. Specific traditional dishes vary around the country depending upon geographical position. Even more fun is a Barcelona winery tour . Explore the city while tasting wine! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Mediterranean

Spanish regions along the Mediterranean coast obviously feature seafood on their menus alongside signature local dishes. Typically, these dishes involve copious use of the olive oil so popular in Mediterranean countries. In Andalusia, the most southerly region, the local specialty is cold soups like gazpacho, with crushed cucumber, onion, pepper, tomato, and garlic. Calamares a la Romana is popular, but it is not for the squeamish. This is battered, deep-fried squid served with lemon and salt.

Rice-based dishes are popular along the coast, especially seafood paellas. The most famous paella is found in Valencia, though this features chicken and rabbit meat. In Catalonia, arros negre is popular.

Spicy fish or vegetable-based stews are popular along the Atlantic coast, such as fabada Asturiana, marmitako, and caldo Gallego. Chorizo is also popular. This spicy sausage is slightly sweet and utilizes lots of garlic. Sometimes it seems that each town and village boasts its own special chorizo recipe that is claimed to be better than all the others, such as the renowned chorizo Riojano. Fabada Asturiana is a white-bean stew from Asturias that makes ample use of the local chorizo variety.

Because historically food transportation was difficult and the central region imported much of its food from the coastal areas, the central regions are known for preserved foods, like Spanish ham and Manchego cheese. Inland, thick, spicy stews are also popular, like cocido madrileño. The most famous Spanish ham is jamon Iberico made from Black Iberian pigs and featuring a distinctive rich, savory taste.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Spain is famous world-wide for its fiestas, and its Balearic Islands are at the heart of the modern nightclubbing scene. For this reason, many travellers come to Spain specially to experience its vibrant nightlife. The island of Ibiza is renowned as Europe’s party capital, but the major cities each offer their own brand of exciting evening entertainments. Madrid’s nights are reputed to be never-ending.

A typical Spanish evening out begins with a visit to the small restaurants and bars for tapas to line the stomach. This transitions into bar hopping before hitting the huge international nightclubs found in all major cities. Due to relaxed licensing laws, these clubs and bars remain open until the early morning hours.

When staying in any Spanish city, it’s a good idea to gain some local insights from your hotel’s staff or tourist guides. The central streets and plazas are typically lined with bars that offer an eclectic mix of music and that are designed for people with different tastes. Rather than waste your time pushing through the crowds to then listen to music that isn’t your style, tell a local what you like and follow their directions. You can be certain that there is a live music venue that will cater to your tastes.

According to popular opinion, the three top nightlife spots in Spain are Ibiza, Madrid, and Barcelona. Ibiza, of course, caters to the young crowd with its mega clubs and all-night beach parties. Madrid is renowned for the huge variety of nightlife it offers where everyone is guaranteed to find a scene they enjoy. Barcelona’s nightlife is noted for its spectacular displays and wild abandon. But the nightlife isn’t limited to just these three locations since music and fiestas run in the Spanish blood. You can find a selection of lively bars and clubs in any Spanish town or city.

If you’re looking for an upscale experience, Marbella is the place to go. That’s where you’ll find the more exquisite cocktail bars and the difficult-to-enter clubs filled with the wealthy folks and celebrities. If it’s a pub craw you prefer, Malaga is famous for having the most bars per square foot in Europe. Granada is noted for its student vibe, Valenicia for its boho chic bars, and Bilbao for its funky nightspots. But if you want a truly exclusive Spanish experience, head for Seville. That’s where you can watch or maybe join in with traditional flamenco dancers.

Getting Around

It’s easy to get around Spain by airplane, train, coach, or hire a car. In fact, you’re spoiled because Spain’s transport network is so good.

Unlike many other countries, domestic flights are relatively frequent and affordable throughout Spain. Trains are typically cheaper, but you can often find air tickets for less than the same train journey, so it’s always worth checking both options before booking. However, if you fly, you do have the extra hassle of transferring from the airport to the city center while the main train stations are typically in the heart of the cities. As a general rule, if you’re traveling from one side of the country to the other, take a plane. If you’re traveling between neighboring cities, take a train.

Spain also boasts Europe’s most extensive high-speed railway network. Spanish trains regularly reach speeds of up to 190 mph! Check comparison websites before booking any train tickets because you can sometimes pay much less if you travel on a different train or sometimes by flying.

Coach & car

Because the trains are so efficient and there are also lots of domestic air flights, it’s not a great option to go by coach or to hire a vehicle. If you have lots of time and a tight budget, long-distance coaches can be much cheaper than the trains or planes.

Driving your own car gives you much more flexibility than you could ever get from a train. You will be able to visit and explore remote rural locations other tourists never see. However, you will find that your long-distance journeys take a lot longer by car or coach when compared with the high-speed train. Sadly, even if you hire a Ferrari, you won’t be allowed to drive along the Spanish roads at 190 mph.

Accommodations

Hotels vary across Spain depending upon where you’re staying. In Barcelona and Madrid, prepare to pay higher prices, especially during Easter and summer. Across the rest of the country, you can find rooms in a hostal for as little as €50 per night and in better hotels for around €100. Note that each city and region has its own high season due to special fiestas and local events, so it’s a good idea to research the specific towns you want to visit.

Booking in advance is highly advisable, especially during Easter and summer. Otherwise, you may not get the hotel you want or even the kind of room you prefer. You typically get the best deals in Spain by booking online. There are 5 general types of accommodation to choose from.

The high-class hotels are called paradores . These boutique hotels are often converted castles or other historic buildings. For example, the Parador de Siguenza is a castle that dates back to Roman times, and the 15 th -century Parador de Santiago de Compostela is said to be the world’s oldest hotel.

Hotels and hostals

In Spain, normal hotels are classed as either hotels or hostals. A hotel offers a full range of services but a hostal is a budget hotel with fewer services equivalent to a 1-star hotel. A standard hotel should be 3-stars, and a paradore is 5-stars.

Guesthouses

Bed and breakfasts are common around Spain. These are typically either fondas , which have a restaurant attached, or pensiones , which are budget guesthouses. If you’re an adventurer traveling by the seat of your pants, watch out for signs saying “B&B”, “ Habitaciones ”, or “ Camas ”.

Villas and apartments

Vacation properties are popular in Spain. If you’re traveling as part of a large family group, you’ll find a villa a cost-effective form of accommodation. However, they are typically rented by the week or longer, so not as flexible as a hotel or guesthouse.

If you’re headed for the great outdoors, you’ll be delighted to learn that Spain is awash with affordable campsites that typically charge around €6 per person per night. However, research in advance because campgrounds near the most popular natural or cultural attractions charge significantly more.

Interestingly, Spain’s climate can be divided along the same lines as its cuisine. The three main zones are the Atlantic, the interior, and the Mediterranean.

Along the Atlantic coastline, the ocean ensures that the summers remain relatively cool and the winters mild. In the deep interior, the climate is semi-arid. Along the Mediterranean coast, the summers are dry and hot while the winters are mild. This is the best time for a sunset sailing cruise and enjoy the sights from the water!

If you’re interested in hiking and sightseeing, the temperatures are mildest in spring and in the fall. July and August see the highest temperatures which are great for sunbathing but a little too hot for admiring architecture or hiking through the wilderness. You can expect temperatures over 86 0 F during the day and remaining over 70 0 F at night. The coolest months are January and February, which see a lot of rain in the north.

A common mistake is to visit mountainous regions in the winter without taking proper winter clothing. While these high regions are baking hot in summer, those picturesque mountain villages are often dusted in snow during January and February.

Attractions

Spain is rich in history and culture, so there are lots of things to do and see around the country. Unless you’re most interested in the nightlife, the three top spots to visit are Barcelona, Madrid, and Granada.

Barcelona is a city rich in culture and art. A great place to start is La Rambla — a pedestrianized street where you’ll find human statures, street performers, Bouqueria Market, museums, and other attractions including the 197-foot high Columbus Monument. Don’t miss the Magic Fountain of Montjuic which features half-hourly music and light shows during the summer months and weekends. When the fountain is in action, its water sprays are lit in different colors and dance to the music.

If you are interested in modern art, you’ll be in Heaven. The Picasso Museum is renowned for its unique collection of Picasso memorabilia from his school workbooks right through to his final masterpieces. But the most obvious evidence of Barcelona’s fixation with modern art is Park Guell, which is filled with Gaudi’s unique sculptures and buildings.

But Gaudi’s greatest accomplishment is unarguably the Sagrada Familia. This strangely designed basilica has become Barcelona’s most famous landmark, and it isn’t even finished yet. Gaudi laid out the plans and began the work, but the basilica will not be completed until around 2026.

If soccer is more your style, you’ll want to visit the world-famous Barcelona FC Museum. There you can learn all about the training and lifestyle of the world’s highest paid soccer players. A tour of the museum includes a visit to the players’ changing rooms and a walk through the tunnel onto the pitch itself.

History lovers should ride the Montjuic Cable Car to get scenic views of the city as they rise up to Montjuic Castle. This 17 th -century fortress offers fantastic panoramic views of the city and a fascinating armour museum.

And your kids will love Tibidabo Amusement Park. This is one of the world’s oldest parks — much older than Disney World or Universal Studios. Some of the rides there are genuine antiques, and the suspended airplane ride is considered an iconic symbol of the city. Don’t miss the historic automation collection in the park.

Madrid boasts a fine collection of historic buildings and the kind of internationally renowned museums you’d expect to find in any major capital city. The most iconic structure is the Palacio Real.

The Palacio Real, or Royal Palace, is the official palace of the King of Spain. Boasting 3,000 rooms and an amazing art collection, this is a fantastic place to learn about the glamor and luxury of a European royal family. During a visit, you’ll see a sweeping main staircase, the Throne Room, the Royal Chapel, and the Royal Apothecary.

Granada is reputed to be the most beautiful city in the world. However, most visitors head straight for the Alhambra. This Moorish fortress and palace is one of the world’s best examples of early Islamic architecture. Its breathtaking vistas, marble fountains, and unique mosaics are beyond compare. The palace began life as a Roman fort before the Moors invaded and made it their own. The Moorish fort was built in 889 and transformed into a much larger palace complex in 1333.

Visitors from the US will be particularly interested in visiting the throne room. This is where Christopher Columbus came to propose his voyage to the west to find a new trade route to India. If Queen Isabella had said no to his ambitious plans, the US and all the other American nations might not exist today.

If you want to explore beyond these three major tourist cities, head west to Salamanca to experience one of the world’s oldest universities. Salamanca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it is the third oldest university in the world founded in 1218. Arguably, it is really the world’s oldest university because it was the first officially granted university status by the Vatican, which was then the major power broker in Europe.

If you’ve ever seen Harvard or Oxford, you’ll know what kind of buildings to expect. However, here they have a more flamboyant Catholic touch, with more ornate details and bright colors. The main university library is a must-see attraction.

What to Pack on Your Sunset Cruise in Barcelona

What to pack for barcelona.

I'm all about convenience and there's no better way to keep everything you need on you than with a stylish belt bag. Plus, pesky pickpockets can be a really problem in the busy areas of Barcelona.

Here are my favorite things to pack when it comes to traveling around Barcelona (or anywhere, really!) I travel a ton , so I've got this down to a science now!

BEST BELT BAG FOR BARCELONA

Belt Bag

LIGHTWEIGHT SUNSCREEN

Don't forget that the sun hits different in Barcelona! Protect your skin. If you're traveling through Europe, don't forget that some airports, (specifically London ) have pesky liquid requirements.

N/A

SAND PROOF/QUICK DRY TOWEL

Going to the beach? Don't forget your towel! And definitely don't get stuck waiting for it to dry. These quick dry towels keep away the worst part of the beach (sand) and make it easy to store them when you're back in your hotel. Plus, they're super compact and light weight.

N/A

WHITE SNEAKERS

Hear me out - you'll be walking a lot while you're in Barcelona. In fact, you'll probably have to walk through one of Barcelona's neighborhoods to get to your sunset cruise. You could take an e-bike walking isn't your jam.

Grab a pair of cute white sneakers to pair with your sundress or evening out attire for a stylish and comfortable way to get around.

N/A

SIM cards can be a nightmare, I get it. Airalo makes it easy to add a SIM card right to your phone - one less thing you have to worry about when you get to Europe. You can purchase a card for Spain, Europe, or Global.

Just make sure your phone is compatible before you buy! You can check in the settings of your phone.

The perfect fit for an evening on the water! It comes in plenty of colors, making it easy to find something that fits your individual style.

N/A

LIGHT SWEATER

You'll need your swimsuit if you're visiting in the summer, but if you're heading to Barcelona during the fall, or even Christmas-time , a sunset sail might get a little chilly! Grab a cute sweater to stay warm when the wind picks up.

Barcelona, spain.

Barcelona is a true global city of breathtaking architecture, countless world-class museums, bustling markets, colorful parks and high-end fashion. This town is big but perfectly discoverable on foot. Imposing Montjuïc Castle is a good starting point for a stunning panorama of the city, and the renowned Joan Miró museum and Catalonian national art museum are also in the area. One might fill an entire day strolling amidst the 12th- and 13th-century architecture of the Gothic Quarter and then checking out the extensive collection of the Museu Picasso. But Barcelona may be most renowned for the unmistakable imprint made on the city by architect Antoní Gaudi, from the spectacular unfinished church of La Sagrada Família to the whimsical Park Güell. More of his work can be found along tree-lined La Rambla, one of the world’s most famous promenades and the perfect place to experience the striking architecture, designer shopping and delicious tapas of the city.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Book a terrace suite on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's newest vessel, Ilma , launching in 2024.
