Caccia all'oro russo.

The crew of a $300 million yacht linked to a Russian oligarch is 'refusing to sail' with US officials trying to seize it, report says

The US has been attempting to seize a $300 million yacht linked to a Russian oligarch for weeks.

But the crew is "refusing to sail" with US authorities, according to court documents viewed by CBS .

The crew fears that cooperating would ruin their reputation in the yacht industry, the outlet reports.

The crew of a $300 million superyacht linked to a sanctioned Russian oligarch is "refusing to sail" with US authorities who are attempting to seize the vessel, according to court documents obtained by CBS News .

For weeks, US officials have struggled to seize the Amadea, a luxury superyacht docked in Fiji that the Justice Department says is owned by Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The lengthy legal process was further complicated on May 7, when the ship's crew declined to aid US authorities on the ship's departing voyage, CBS reported.

The reasoning behind the crew's refusal was two-fold, according to CBS' reporting based on a sworn affidavit from the ship's British captain, John Walsh.

The first is that the crew members are no longer being paid to sail the Amadea because the owner's funds have been frozen. On top of that, the crew is worried that breaching its employment contract by working with US law enforcement could ruin their professional reputation, the report says.

"In short, the current crew of the Amadea are refusing to sail on the Amadea with the U.S. authorities to an unknown destination," Walsh wrote, per CBS.

Following the incident, the US appears to have hired a new crew for the ship. However, the boat's captain repeatedly rejected having new crewmembers on board due to a lack of proper "vetting," CBS reports.

The 348-foot Amadea, equipped with a helipad, pool, and eight cabins, is one of the largest superyachts in the world.

Kerimov, its alleged owner, was sanctioned by the US in 2018 and is said to have "close ties" to Russia's president Vladimir Putin. The billionaire gold magnate is one of dozens of oligarchs whose foreign assets have become chess pieces in the West's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

So far, the US has fallen behind its European allies when it comes to seizing the sanctioned billionaires' "ill-gotten gains," an economic punishment officials hope will turn the country's elite against Putin.

Lawyer Feizal Haniff argued that the ship's true owner is a Russian oil executive named Eduard Khudainatov, who is not sanctioned. On Friday, a Fijian court dismissed the lawyer's appeal that was preventing the ship's seizure. He has a week to appeal the decision.

'A' - or a $300 million yacht

Of course the owner of this impressive yacht is a Ruassian, Andrey Melnichenko. Its yacht features a radical shape and was designed by Philippe Starck. Completed in 2008 the yacht is estimated at $300 million.

Called 'A', the yacht features is secured by a fingerprint security system, with only four people in the world having access to it. And after you get inside there is an all-white, 2,583-square-foot master suite wrapped n bomb-proof, 44-millimeter glass. The combination of the rotating bed and the rotating platter allows limitless angles for watching the sunset, sunrise or the 60-inch plasma TV, which retracts from the ceiling.

Instead of regular couches and mahogany walls, there are Baccarat-crystal tables, shiny white finishes and polished silver, a kind of Manhattan-loft-meets-Vegas aesthetic. Many of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling mirrors, which Mr. Starck says have a built-in "mathematical beauty" that also refer to the "mathematical genius" of Mr. Melnichenko. The walls of one room are covered in white sting-ray hides, while another is covered in hand-stitched calf's leather. The main deck features two Michel Haillard chairs made from alligator hides and Kudo horns.

Mark Zuckerberg's $300 Million Superyacht visuals slammed as 'climate hypocrite's hideaway'

Mark zuckerberg's superyach sparks controversy over climate hypocrisy as internet mocks his ownership of luxury vessel despite environmental advocacy..

Mark Zuckerberg's latest status update screams real-world billionaire choice: a $300 million superyacht. With an estimated net worth of US$180 billion per Forbes, one of the world's richest men and founder of Meta dropped a whopping sum on a superyacht he calls Launchpad. While the yacht itself looks like something out of a James Bond movie, complete with stunning features and cutting-edge tech, the internet isn't oohing and aahing. Instead, critics are slamming it as a “Climate Hypocrite's Hideaway.”

Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing at the US Capitol, in Washington, US. (Reuters)

Mark Zuckerberg’s superyacht visuals go viral

Mark Zuckerberg's new yacht has become a social media sensation thanks to a viral TikTok video capturing its stunning visuals. The massive vessel, currently docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, isn't shy about its luxury. Spanning 118 meters, the yacht made its debut sail back in March 2024 across the Atlantic and has been turning heads ever since. Designed by the Swedish-based Espen Øin International, the reported $300 Million Superyacht boasts “a sleek, multilayered exterior with a robust steel hull and an aluminium superstructure.” Reports Suerpeyacht Times.

With a gross tonnage of 5,000 gross tons, the yacht can cruise at speeds of up to 24 knots, providing an epic cruising experience for the billionaire owner. It currently holds the 45th position as being one of the world’s largest yachts. The beast also has a helipad designed in case the Meta owner changes his mind and wants to catch a sudden flight. With this Mark Zuckerberg joins a group of tech billionaires who also own superyachts, including Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison and the Google cofounders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Zuckerberg’s superyacht criticised for carbon emission

Mark Zuckerberg's stunning new yacht has the internet buzzing, but the awe is laced with mocks and confusion. Poking sarcastic fun at the Meta founder, a vocal advocate for fighting climate change, the internet questions why he owns a private jet that reportedly burned over $158,000 in fuel within two months. Now, this superyacht is being criticised as one of the most polluting activities an individual can engage in.

For example, Roman Abramovich's yachts supposedly pump out over 22,000 tons of carbon a year, exceeding the emissions of some small countries reports the NY Times. Jeff Bezos' $500 million yacht, Koru, is another most polluting Billionaire toy contributing 7,000 tons annually. Zuckerberg's superyacht's environmental toll remains to be seen, but the juxtaposition with his climate activism has sparked a fierce online debate.

“Hey look it’s Mark Zuckerberg‘s yacht. I’m sure him flying private jets with Bill Gates is helping to plan it though. It’s all our fault instead.” Wrote an X user. “Mark Zuckerberg's giant yacht. But they tell you that driving a gasoline car is ruining the planet…,” wrote another.” “Is Zuckerberg's Yacht a Luxurious Paradise or a Climate Hypocrite's Hideaway,” said one more.

$300 Million Yacht of Sanctioned Russian Oligarch Suleiman Kerimov Seized by Fiji at Request of United States

Fijian law enforcement executed a seizure warrant freezing the Motor Yacht Amadea (the Amadea), a 348-foot luxury vessel owned by sanctioned Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov. Fijian law enforcement, with the support and assistance of the FBI, acted pursuant to a mutual legal assistance request from the U.S. Department of Justice following issuance of a seizure warrant from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, which found that the Amadea is subject to forfeiture based on probable cause of violations of U.S. law, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), money laundering and conspiracy.

The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control designated Kerimov as part of a group of Russian oligarchs who profit from the Russian government through corruption and its malign activity around the globe, including the occupation of Crimea. In sanctioning Kerimov, the Treasury Department also cited Kerimov as an official of the Government of the Russian Federation and a member of the Russian Federation Counsel.

Large yacht 300-foot yacht with name "the Amadea" displayed at the top

According to court documents, Kerimov owned the Amadea after his designation. Additionally, Kerimov and those acting on his behalf and for his benefit caused U.S. dollar transactions to be routed through U.S. financial institutions for the support and maintenance of the Amadea.

“This ruling should make clear that there is no hiding place for the assets of individuals who violate U.S. laws. And there is no hiding place for the assets of criminals who enable the Russian regime,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “The Justice Department will be relentless in our efforts to hold accountable those who facilitate the death and destruction we are witnessing in Ukraine.”

“Last month, I warned that the department had its eyes on every yacht purchased with dirty money,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco. “This yacht seizure should tell every corrupt Russian oligarch that they cannot hide – not even in the remotest part of the world. We will use every means of enforcing the sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war in Ukraine.”

“This seizure demonstrates the FBI's persistence in pursuing sanctioned Russian oligarchs attempting to evade accountability for their role in jeopardizing our national security,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray. “The FBI, along with our international partners, will continue to seek out those individuals who contribute to the advancement of Russia’s malign activities and ensure they are brought to justice, regardless of where, or how, they attempt to hide.”

“This seizure of Suleiman Kerimov’s vessel, the Amadea, nearly 8,000 miles from Washington, D.C., symbolizes the reach of the Department of Justice as we continue to work with our global partners to disrupt the sense of impunity of those who have supported corruption and the suffering of so many,” said Director Andrew Adams of Task Force KleptoCapture. “This Task Force will continue to bring to bear every resource available in this unprecedented, multinational series of enforcement actions against the Russian regime and its enablers.”

“The U.S. Marshals Service will continue to contribute our expertise in support of Task Force efforts to take possession of seized assets of Russian oligarchs during these forfeiture operations,” said Director Ronald L. Davis of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The seizure was coordinated through the Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture, an interagency law enforcement task force dedicated to enforcing the sweeping sanctions, export controls, and economic countermeasures that the United States, along with its foreign allies and partners, has imposed in response to Russia’s unprovoked military invasion of Ukraine. Announced by the Attorney General on March 2 and run out of the Office of the Deputy Attorney General, the task force will continue to leverage all of the department’s tools and authorities to combat efforts to evade or undermine the collective actions taken by the U.S. government in response to Russian military aggression.

Upon receipt of a mutual legal assistance request from the United States, Fijian authorities executed the request, obtaining a domestic seizure warrant from a Fijian court.

The Amadea, International Maritime Organization number 1012531, is believed to be worth approximately $300 million or more. The yacht is now in Lautoka, Fiji.

This matter is being investigated by the FBI’s New York Field Office with assistance from the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Canberra, Australia, the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, and the U.S. Embassy in Suva, Fiji.

Trial Attorney Andrew D. Beaty of the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section and Trial Attorney Joshua L. Sohn of the Criminal Division’s Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section are handling the seizure. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Marshals Service provided significant assistance. The United States thanks the Fijian authorities for their cooperation in this matter.

A superyacht owned by Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie attracted attention recently after being spotted in Miami, Florida.

A TikToker posted a video of "Kaos," Walton Laurie's 361-foot luxury yacht, as it was moored outside her "front door."

"Oh wow, this thing is huge," Bridget Brick says in the video, adding that the yacht "looks like a small city."

@bridgetbrix Never a dull day in Miami, as another, mega yacht pulls up outside my front door. Did you know it’s easy to look up any information about a yacht? I learned this while in Portofino, and from this little search, you can tell who owns yachts & who rents them. 🙊 # #miami # #miamilife # #yacht # #yachts ♬ original sound - Bridget Brick

All aboard S.S. Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

Zuckerberg's Climate Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds

yacht 300 milioni

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” my Midwestern Irish-Catholic grandmammy used to quip as she exacted her Old-World discipline on us, her captive grandchildren, in equal measure, with equal stringency.

“Spare the rod” was another favorite aphorism of hers.

She never had the chance to instill such basic life lessons into the technocrats who aspire to govern the future global dystopian techno-hell fiefdom, as envisioned by the likes of the “you will own nothing and be happy” World Economic Forum.

You , of formerly Middle-Class America, the envy of the world, might own nothing, but Climate Change™ crusader Mark Zuckerberg will, of course, keep his private jets and mega-yachts.

“Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, known for his climate change advocacy, has recently added a new $300 million mega yacht to his extravagant collection of toys, including a Gulfstream G650 private jet,” reports Twitter/X user Camus , accompanied by footage of the behemoth. “Powered by four MTU engines, Zuckerberg’s mega-yacht can reach a top speed of 24 knots. However, the use of large-displacement diesel engines contradicts Zuckerberg’s public stance on climate change and environmental sustainability.”

Once upon a time, PJ Media had a sizeable, respectable presence on Facebook, reaching readers there by the thousands who appreciated our work.

As the clearly top-down-directed Big Tech censorship regime of the late 2010s kicked into high gear, however, we were deluged with corporate “fact-checks” of our stories covering the Climate Change™ scam and other topics. Eventually, our reach was almost completely eliminated by increasingly draconian, stifling policy changes aimed at independent publishers like us.

As for Facebook/Meta kingpin Mark Zuckerberg himself and his brand-new toy, the carbon dioxide emissions via fossil fuel burning of a private yacht compared to an average person’s passenger car — which they need, by the way, to go to work and live, not as a weekend plaything to traipse around in — boggles the mind.

Via Super Yacht Content (emphasis added):

According to the Yachting Pages, the longest Superyacht in the world, 180m M/Y Azzam, holds 1,000,000 litres of fuel . To put it into perspective, that is the equivalent of filling a regular hatchback car 23,800 time s. Or, six Boeing 747 commercial airliners. West Nautical’s Vessel Manager, Tony Hildrew, a former Yacht Chief Engineer said: “Fuel is the single biggest expense when it comes to yacht operations, it is estimated that the global spend on fuel [for yachting] is around $150bn annually .”

Of course, fuel consumption depends on use. Zuckerberg has a lot of Climate Change™ conferences to jet-set to where he and his billionaire friends tell the peasants they can’t have air conditioning (or a car, or a gas stove, or a refrigerator), so it’s entirely possible that his particular yacht’s carbon footprint exceeds the average billionaire activist’s.

Barack Obama, 2013:

Ultimately, if you think about all the youth that everybody has mentioned here… if everybody is raising living standards to the point where everybody has got a car and everybody has got air conditioning, and everybody has got a big house, well, the planet will boil over — unless we find new ways of producing energy.

And the governing authorities responsible would rather not have any pesky independent, uncompromised media around to report on it when things go south — the same reason they don’t want us reporting on dangerous gain-of-function research currently underway on American soil that will likely spark COVID 2.0, or any other technocratic machination that serves no one’s interests except a tiny handful of vicious elites.

None of this was ever about environmentalism or Equity™ or any of the various sweet nothings whispered into liberalized minds to push the agenda through; it’s always been about impoverishing and, ultimately, reducing the population.

Meanwhile, as I’ve documented before, as of April, Google has 24 PJ Media articles covering the Climate Change™ scam on the demonetized naughty list — a list that it adds to arbitrarily at will like a Kafka novel, with no explanation or recourse for us to recoup all of that lost revenue.

Shutting up dissident voices in independent media is crucial to that objective, as more and more of us wake up to that reality. This is why we are targeted for censorship.

Mediawan CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton on Breaking Barriers to Build One of Europe’s Biggest Independent Production Groups

International Visionary Award honoree Pierre-Antoine Capton reflects on journey to Mediawan CEO.

Pierre-Antoine Capton

It’s little wonder why French president Emmanuel Macron was visibly moved as he inducted Mediawan CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton into France’s Legion of Honor last October, calling the exec “the ultimate French success story.”

In a country rarely known to promote social mobility, Capton-esque career trajectories are scarce. A self-made entrepreneur born into a middle-class Normandy family, Capton began his professional life as a teen with an entry-level internship,  eschewing elite universities, making the exec a rare bird among France’s top media execs. For all that, Capton remains more humble than flamboyant, letting his track record speak for itself.

Popular on Variety

Following its recent acquisition of German production-distribution powerhouse Leonine (“The Lives of Others”), Mediawan is now worth more than €2 billion ($2.1 billion) and boasts an estimated annual revenue of $1.3 billion, encompassing more than 80 production labels around the world, including Brad Pitt’s Plan B, France’s On Entertainment (“Miraculous”), Chi-Fou-Mi (“Beating Hearts”) and Chapter 2 (“Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie”), Italy’s Palomar (“The Count of Monte Cristo”) and,  more recently,  the U.K.’s Misfits Entertainment (“Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story”).

While taking a hands-on approach and engineering high-profile acquisitions at Mediawan, Capton continues to lead Troisième Œil Prods., the vehicle he launched out of a modest office located in a parking lot back in 2001, that now produces some of France’s highest-rated talk shows, such as “C à vous.”

“I’ve always been guided and passionate about content, and that focus has set Mediawan and my production companies apart. We’re not guided by finance nor investor-dictated strategies,” he tells Variety . Instead, the company is driven by “our taste for production,” he adds, wearing a black Celine sweater and his staple dark-framed glasses, sitting next to a white marble desk lined with souvenirs. Large bay windows reveal the Eiffel Tower, among other Paris landmarks, peaking in from the outside, while within.

Capton also surrounds himself with strong women. He works closely with Elisabeth d’Arvieu, who joined the company almost four years ago after working at Lagardere and StudioCanal, and now runs Mediawan Pictures, overseeing all the film, animation and international labels.

A hard-core indie TV producer, Capton says he “didn’t know much about finance and didn’t yet speak English” when Pigasse and Niel approached him to co-create and lead Mediawan in 2015. Yet, under his leadership, the group raised an initial $321 million by listing shares on the Euronext Paris stock exchange, and got U.S. investment firm KKR on board as its major backer four years later, during the pandemic.

2015 marked a turning point for the French film and TV industry, with Netflix having just launched and Amazon’s Prime Video preparing to roll out. “As streamers were arriving in France, we had to seize the opportunity to produce high-quality content for our amazing producers, creators and auteurs,” says Capton, citing Florian Zeller as an inspiration. “When I was producing his plays, Florian shared his wish to direct his first film, and I realized that such a film from a French auteur would be complicated to finance within an international scope, even if that auteur was already the most celebrated playwright of his generation.” Both Zeller and star Anthony Hopkins would win Oscars for their work on 2020’s “The Father,” something that only fueled Capton’s hunger to “develop more grand international projects from Europe.”

Capton’s tastes when it comes to spotting projects certainly manage to capture the zeitgeist. He says he owes this skill to his grandmother, who “raised him during an important part of [his] childhood.”

“We’d watch American sitcoms and all sorts of shows. I learned to count with a show called ‘Des chiffres et des lettres.’ I traveled thanks to documentaries. I educated myself with television, with cinema and series,” he shares.

No single program left a bigger impact than “Friends.” Adolescent obsession for the sitcom soon gave way to early-career intuition, when, as an 18-year-old intern decades before the binge-watching model, Capton thought to program a full season in a back-to-back, 24-episode bloc. “Some thought the idea bizarre, but it worked, and that’s how I got my first job at Canal+,” he says, pointing out the nice bit of symmetry that he now works with Plan B, an outfit co-created by “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston.

In some French circles, Capton’s “TV culture” has been perceived as not highbrow enough. But it’s something he says he’s “proud of,” asserting that his background and TV knowledge has led him “to build [his] company and meet wonderful people, and create Mediawan.” He also praises d’Arvieu for her “excellent taste.” But don’t expect Mediawan to start making trashy reality TV. “We don’t want to make anything we’d be ashamed of,” Capton says.

D’Arvieu says the common thread among all the companies under the Mediawan umbrella is a drive to be talent-centric. “All the producers we work with have this culture; they’re extraordinarily close to screenwriters and directors,” she says. “They work like artisans and artists.”

Traveling to Los Angeles and across Europe on a monthly basis for the last few years, Capton has made powerful allies, including CAA’s CEO and co-chairman Bryan Lourd. Lourd appreciates the fact that Capton is not only a businessman, he also “loves creators and storytellers.”

“It’s an unusual skill set in today’s world — that understanding of an artist’s temperament,” says Lourd, who also argues Capton stands out because he “didn’t come from a family, or money or any of that stuff.”

“It’s the most validating thing to know that someone is actually there because they want to be there, and they care, and they recognize other people and companies, too, that are scrappy, and like the self-made part of it,” he adds. CAA has worked with Mediawan in repping U.S. rights on Bille August’s series “The Count of Monte Cristo” as well as representing Plan B. Buying Plan B “really speaks to their tastes and [Capton’s] vision,” and a sign that they’re “playing the long game,” Lourd says.

“We knew from our first Zoom call that we wanted to tell stories together. We have common passions, values and aspirations,” he says, citing Plan B’s prestige pedigree with socially minded movies like “She Said,” recent box office hit “Bob Marley: One Love” and series “3 Body Problem,” as well as their love for auteurs such as Bong Joon-ho and Tim Burton whose latest films, “Mickey 17” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” respectively, were teased at CinemaCon.

Over at Plan B, longtime leaders Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner claim both companies “have complementary taste and sensibility” and “both love finding the intersection of commercial and quality work.” The pair also say that Capton’s “background as an indie producer is invaluable,” because he has created an “ecosystem” that is “very focused on empowering and supporting independent producers — people who develop and make things in a particular way.”

Indeed, if there were any doubt over his valuing independence, Capton points to the fact he “refused to sell [his] company Troisieme Oeil Prods. three times.”

Maxime Saada, Canal+ Group’s chair and CEO, says that when Capton took the reins of Mediawan there was skepticism, with some assuming he’d be the “straw man” for Pigasse and Niel. “But what he’s achieved in very little time is impressive,” he says. “He’s the only French person in the world of media, TV and film that people abroad talk to me about. Even in Korea where I just traveled, they only know Mediawan.” Saada adds that Capton has “taken many daring bets on talents, has maneuvered complex personalities and egos, and has been able to get them to build lineups.”

While the company will undoubtedly grow further in Europe and has plans to expand its footprint in Africa, the U.S. remains a key market. But Capton is determined to avoid pitfalls that derailed previous efforts by French outfits, such as EuropaCorp, that never gained a foothold in Hollywood. “Before we did anything, people said to me, ‘You’re going to fail, they’ll strip you off, look at all the French businesses that failed there!’ But honestly, we have the same frank discussions with U.S. studio bosses and agents as we do with our European partners, and we’ve yet to be stripped down and we haven’t lost money,” Capton says. “We don’t go there with [guns-blazing], and we don’t have a Mediawan office in L.A. yet. We just do our job the best we can.”

It’s also through sports that Capton says he’s met “players who are going to become partners in Mediawan,” teasing what should become yet another milestone partnership for the company.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

yacht 300 milioni

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

yacht 300 milioni

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

yacht 300 milioni

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

yacht 300 milioni

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

yacht 300 milioni

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

yacht 300 milioni

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

yacht 300 milioni

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
