French authorities say they have seized a yacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Igor Sechin.

Sechin served as Russia's deputy prime minister from 2008 to 2012 and is the current CEO of state oil company Rosneft.

The u.s. keeps turning to sanctions despite their mixed record.

He is among the several "elites close to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin" that the U.S. Treasury Department targeted with sanctions last week. The European Union imposed sanctions against Sechin on Monday, calling him one of Putin's "most trusted and closest advisors, as well as his personal friend" and saying the two were in daily contact.

French finance minister Bruno Le Maire announced on Thursday that French authorities had seized Sechin's yacht — named "Amor Vero," or "True Love" in Italian — at the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat on Wednesday.

"Thanks to the French customs officers who are enforcing the European Union's sanctions against those close to the Russian government," he said, according to a Reuters translation of his tweet.

The 280-foot yacht had been docked in southern France's La Ciotat since early January, and was set to remain there undergoing repairs through the end of March, CNBC reports . But the French ministry of finance said the yacht was preparing to cast off when authorities began their check, which lasted several hours.

The ministry said it had identified Sechin as the main shareholder of the company that owns the yacht, according to The Guardian .

"As part of the implementation of European Union sanctions against Russia and in support of Ukraine, we seized a first yacht," French Minister at the Ministry of Public Action and Accounts Olivier Dussopt wrote in a tweet on Thursday translated by France24 .

The U.S. sanctioned more oligarchs on Thursday

The U.S. announced a fresh round of sanctions against Russian oligarchs later Thursday.

It enacted "full blocking sanctions" on eight oligarchs and their families and imposed visa restrictions on 19 others as well as 47 of their family members and close associates.

"These individuals have enriched themselves at the expense of the Russian people, and some have elevated their family members into high-ranking positions," the White House said in a statement. "Others sit atop Russia's largest companies and are responsible for providing the resources necessary to support Putin's invasion of Ukraine."

It said those targeted by the sanctions will be cut off from the U.S. financial system, with their assets in the U.S. frozen and their property blocked from use. The individuals named include Putin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, and billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

Superyachts headed for safe harbor after U.S. and Europe announced sanctions

Citing data from shipping database Marine Traffic, CNBC has reported that at least four Russian billionaires began moving their superyachts toward Montenegro and the Maldives — which doesn't have an extradition treaty with the U.S. — after the U.S. and other Western countries announced a raft of sanctions against Russian oligarchs and financial institutions.

President Biden has repeatedly pledged to pursue the crimes of Russian oligarchs, including in his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

"We're joining with European allies to find and seize their yachts, their luxury apartments, their private jets," he said. "We are coming for your ill-begotten gains."

The following day, the U.S. Department of Justice announced "Task Force KleptoCapture," which it says will enforce sanctions and other financial measures imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, seize the assets of people who violate them and leave no stone unturned in investigating criminal acts that support Russia's aggression.

German authorities deny reports that they seized an oligarch's yacht

France's announcement comes a day after Forbes reported — citing three yacht industry sources — that German authorities in the port city of Hamburg had seized Usmanov's superyacht.

The status of the yacht is unclear.

Hamburg officials have since denied the report, with a spokesperson for its economic authority telling The Guardian that "no yachts have been confiscated." Any order to seize properties subject to sanctions would have to come from higher federal customs authorities, they added.

But when the White House announced sanctions against Usmanov and other oligarchs on Thursday, it said the superyacht — which it called "one of the world's largest" had been seized by Germany. Officials said property like his yacht and private jet will be blocked from use in the U.S.

The yacht in question, named "Dilbar," measures 512 feet long and is valued at $600 million, both outlets report. It can accommodate as many as 24 guests in a dozen suites, as well as up to 96 crew members, according to luxury yacht comparison site YachtCharterFleet .

Putin's alleged yacht is believed to be out of reach

Satellite imagery obtained by CBS News shows the superyacht believed to be owned by Putin docked in Kaliningrad, a "highly militarized port in Russian territorial waters" and out of reach of U.S. sanctions.

Marine Traffic data suggests "the Graceful," Putin's alleged yacht, left Germany two weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the "hacktivist" group Anonymous took credit for changing the yacht's call sign to "FKPTN" and its destination to "hell."

France’s finance minister has announced the country has seized a yacht linked to Rosneft boss, Igor Sechin, in the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat, as German local authorities denied reports they had also seized the $600m superyacht belonging to Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov .

French finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, said it had seized a yacht linked to Rosneft boss Igor Sechin in the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat.

The finance ministry said the yacht was owned by an entity of which Sechin had been identified as the main shareholder.

The announcement came as authorities in Hamburg denied reports that Usmanov’s yacht had been seized in a shipyard in the German port city.

“No yachts have been confiscated,” a spokesperson for Hamburg’s economic authority said. “A handover [of the yacht to its owner] is also currently not planned. No yacht is going to leave the port that is not allowed to do so.”

The Hamburg local authority said any order to seize properties subject to sanctions would have to come from higher federal customs authorities.

A Forbes report citing three sources in the yacht industry had reported on Usmanov’s 156-metre (512-foot) yacht Dilbar, valued at $600m and regarded as the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage, was seized by German authorities on Wednesday.

Usmanov was on a list of billionaires to face sanctions from the European Union in response to Russia’s 24 February invasion of Ukraine .

Usmanov’s 156-metre (512-foot) yacht Dilbar, valued at $600m and regarded as the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage, was seized by German authorities on Wednesday, according to a Forbes report based on three sources in the yacht industry.

The Dilbar, owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, in Weymouth Bay in the UK in 2020.

The Guardian understands that repair works on the Dilbar yet have currently been put on hold, and that the ship is not in a seaworthy state.

The yacht has been in the yards of shipbuilding firm Blohm+Voss since late October. A spokesperson declined to give a statement but said that all projects by shipbuilder Lürssen would be treated “in accordance with the law”.

Forbes reported that representatives for Usmanov did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine’s adviser to the minister of internal affairs, Anton Geraschenko, responded to the report on Telegram by saying the yacht should be sent to Ukraine and refitted as a missile cruiser.

Usmanov bought Dilbar in 2016 for a reported cost of $600m from German shipbuilder Lürssen, which custom-built it for him over 52 months.

The firm describes it as “one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built, in terms of both dimensions and technology”.

At the time of its launch, Lürssen CEO, Peter Lürssen, said : “Dilbar has the most advanced security technologies of any superyacht in the world. But the things you read about it containing an anti-aircraft missile defence system are all nonsense.”

At 15,917 tonnes, it’s the world’s largest motor yacht by gross tonnage, and is typically staffed by a crew of 96 people, with space for 24 passengers in 12 suites. It has the largest pool ever installed on a yacht as well as two helicopter pads, a sauna, a beauty salon and a gym.

At least five other superyachts owned by Russian billionaires are now anchored or cruising in Maldives, an Indian Ocean island nation that does not have an extradition treaty with the US, ship tracking data showed.

The vessels’ arrival in the archipelago off the coast of Sri Lanka follows the imposition of severe western sanctions on Russia.

The Clio superyacht, owned by Oleg Deripaska, the founder of aluminium giant Rusal, who was sanctioned by the US in 2018, was anchored off the capital Male on Wednesday, according to shipping database MarineTraffic.

The Titan, owned by Alexander Abramov, a cofounder of steel producer Evraz, arrived on 28 February.

Three more yachts owned by Russian billionaires were seen cruising in Maldives waters on Wednesday, the data showed. They include the 88-metre (288 ft) Nirvana owned by Russia’s richest man, Vladimir Potanin . Most vessels were last seen anchored in Middle Eastern ports earlier in the year.

A spokesperson for Maldives’ government did not respond to a request for comment.

The $600m Dilbar is regarded as the largest motor yacht in the world.

The US has said it will take strict action to seize property of sanctioned Russians.

“This coming week, we will launch a multilateral transatlantic taskforce to identify, hunt down, and freeze the assets of sanctioned Russian companies and oligarchs: their yachts, their mansions, and any other ill-gotten gains that we can find and freeze under the law,” the White House said in a tweet on Sunday.

Washington imposed sanctions on Deripaska and other influential Russians in 2018 because of their ties to president Vladimir Putin after alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election, which Moscow denies.

France Seizes Yacht Linked to Vladimir Putin’s Best Buddy Igor Sechin

By Bess Levin

Since Russian president Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine , everyone from the U.S. to the U.K. to the famously neutral Switzerland have hit Russia with crippling, unprecedented economic sanctions. Key Russian banks have been kicked off of SWIFT, the network that connects financial institutions around the globe. The U.S. Treasury Department, as well as its European allies, have prohibited anyone from doing business with Russia’s Central Bank, finance ministry, and wealth fund. Russian flights have been banned from entering American, European, and Canadian airspaces. And in a move that has no doubt kept extremely wealthy Russians up at night, weeping into their blinis and frantically moving whatever they can offshore, Putin’s rich friends have been personally sanctioned, meaning they can say “do svidanie” to their very fancy toys and large stacks of cash.

On Thursday, France seized a yacht linked to  Igor Sechin, the CEO of Russian oil giant Rosneft, one of the world’s largest crude oil producers. The yacht, named Amore Vero, was  impounded  in the French Mediterranean port of La Ciotat, where it was  scheduled  to depart on April 1, according to French24. On Twitter,  Olivier Dussopt, the French minister of public action and accounts,  posted  a photo of the 280-foot vessel—which is reportedly outfitted with a “swimming pool that turns into a helipad.” He wrote: “As part of the implementation of European Union sanctions against Russia and in support of Ukraine, we seized a first yacht.” Earlier this week, French foreign minister  Jean-Yves Le Drian  told reporters: “If I were an oligarch, in Russia or France, I’d be worried.” And apparently, he wasn’t kidding!

What exactly does Sechin have to do with Putin, you might be wondering? Here’s how the European Union described him last month:

Sechin is…one of Vladimir Putin’s most trusted and closest advisors, as well as his personal friend. He has been in contact with the Russian President on a daily basis. He is considered to be one of the most powerful members of the Russian political elite. His connections to Vladimir Putin are long and deep. He worked with the President in the St Petersburg mayor’s office in the 1990s and has proved his loyalty ever since. In 1999 Mr. Sechin became Vladimir Putin’s deputy head of his administration, in 2008 deputy Prime Minister, and in 2012 Rosneft’s CEO. He is one of the Russian oligarchs operating in partnership with the Russian state.

According to the E.U., Sechin is “among those people from Putin’s circle who receive financial gains and important assignments in return for subordination and loyalty.” Among other tasks assigned to him by Putin, Sechin was apparently “involved in financing the vineyards of the palace complex near Gelendzhik, which is considered to be personally used by” the Russian president. Sechin, the E.U. account also reads, “actively supported…and benefited from Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine. Furthermore, Rosneft Aero, a subsidiary of Rosneft of which Mr. Sechin is CEO, delivers jet fuel to the Simferopol Airport which provides air flight connection between the territory of the illegally annexed Crimea and Sevastopol and Russia…he is supporting the consolidation of the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula into the Russian Federation, which in turn further undermines the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.” Sechin has been called “Darth Vader” and the “scariest person on earth.” So you can probably understand why other countries want to crack down on the guy, as (1) he appears to be a clear and present threat to Ukraine and (2) he’s conceivably in a position to call up his buddy Vlad and complain (though, according to reports, the Russian president “ doesn‘t really care ” about sanctions, whether they’re on the state or his pals.)

In other yacht-seizure news, German authorities have reportedly confiscated a boat belonging Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov. At 512 feet and 15,917 tons, Dilbar is the largest motor yacht in the world, according to Forbes. After his assets were frozen by the European Union this week, Usmanov complained he was the victim of character assassination, saying in a statement: “I believe such a decision is unfair, and the reasons employed to justify the sanctions are a set of false and defamatory allegations damaging my honor, dignity, and business reputation.”

France seizes Russian oligarch’s yacht amid EU sanctions

The move against Rosneft boss Igor Sechin came as Western states are implementing severe sanctions, including asset freezes, against Russia for invading Ukraine.

Custom officers in France have seized a yacht belonging to Rosneft boss Igor Sechin as it tried to leave the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat in a breach of European Union sanctions on Russian oligarchs, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said.

The incident came as Western states are rapidly implementing severe sanctions , including asset freezes, against Russia for invading its neighbour Ukraine.

The 88-metre (289-foot) “Amore Vero” arrived in La Ciotat on January 3 and was due to stay there until April 1 for repairs, the finance ministry said in a statement on Thursday, adding that the vessel was subject to the new sanctions.

But on Wednesday, customs officers noted the yacht was “taking steps to sail off urgently, without the repair works being over”, the statement said, adding that the officers therefore decided to seize it.

The finance ministry said the yacht belongs to a company whose main shareholder is Sechin, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It did not name the company.

Monaco-based Imperial Yachts, which according to Refinitiv data is linked to Amore Vero, told Reuters news agency the yacht was owned by a firm called Kazimo, which appointed them as managers of the boat in 2018.

“The individual you name is not connected with either Kazimo nor the yacht,” a representative for Imperial Yachts told Reuters when asked about Sechin.

“Kazimo’s lawyers are in touch with French Douane in order to correct the record,” they said.

The finance ministry did not immediately return a request for comment.

The superyacht was built by Oceanco in the Netherlands and delivered to its owner in 2013, according to yachtcharterfleet.com, which says its on-board features include a beauty salon and gym. It sails under the flag of the Cayman Islands, according to Eikon data.

Sechin is seen as one of Russia’s most powerful men who has worked with Putin since the 1990s when they both worked in the Saint Petersburg mayor’s office.

French authorities on Thursday also seized a Russian-owned cargo vessel at the port of Lorient, Brittany.

Western sanctions

The EU, the United States and the United Kingdom have announced sanctions against Russian tycoons who are closely connected to Putin.

These included sanctions against Sechin, pipeline boss Nikolay Tokarev, bankers Mikhail Fridman and Petr Aven and others.

Paris has said it is drawing up a list of assets in France owned by oligarchs, including yachts and luxury cars, with the southern Rivera coastline long being a magnet for the rich and famous.

“If I were an oligarch, in Russia or France, I’d be worried,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Monday.

US President Joe Biden has also tasked the Department of Justice with assembling a task force “to find and seize their yachts, their luxury apartments their private jets”.

The Maldives

Meanwhile, at least five superyachts owned by Russian billionaires were anchored or cruising in the Maldives, an Indian Ocean island nation that has no extradition treaty with the US, ship tracking data showed.

The French government seized a 280-foot yacht they say is owned by Russian businessman Igor Sechin, they announced on Thursday.

The yacht, named Amore Velo, was confiscated as its crew tried to depart from the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat, according to a translated letter from the French Ministry of Economy and Finance. The ship was initially scheduled to leave the port in April as it underwent repairs.

"At the time of the inspection, the ship was making arrangements to sail urgently, without having completed the planned work," the ministry explained.

Amore Velo is said to be worth $120 million, the website Super Yacht Fan said. It can accommodate 14 guests and a crew of 28.

Officials took the vessel under European Union sanctions meant to freeze the assets of Russian oligarchs, which went into place after the country sent troops into Ukraine last week .

"Thank you to the French customs officers who are enforcing the European Union's sanctions against those close to the Russian government," French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said in a translated tweet .

In a message on Feb. 28, the European Union condemned Russia's aggression toward Ukraine and named Sechin, the CEO of Russian oil company Rosneft, as one of President Vladimir Putin 's "most trusted and closest advisors, as well as his personal friend ."

"He has been in contact with the Russian President on a daily basis," the letter claimed. "He is considered to be one of the most powerful members of the Russian political elite."

"His connections to Vladimir Putin are long and deep," EU representatives added. "He worked with the President in the St. Petersburg mayor's office in the 1990s and has proved his loyalty ever since."

The EU alleges that Sechin receives financial gains and important assignments in return for his loyalty to Putin. They believe he "actively supported materially or financially" the decision to destabilize Ukraine, and has benefitted from the invasion.

According to the New York Times , the U.S. Justice Department created a task force this week to go after billionaires who have helped Putin in his invasion of Ukraine. The group is called Task Force KleptoCapture.

U.S. President Joe Biden has sought to freeze Putin's assets and those of other Russian national security officials, the outlet said.

Announcing the seizure on Twitter, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire thanked French customs officers for enforcing the European Union’s sanctions against Russian oligarchs closely linked to Putin.

Sechin is the CEO of Russian oil giant Rosneft.

A French finance ministry statement shared by Le Maire stated that the yacht was owned by an entity of which Sechin had been identified as the main shareholder.

The statement noted that the yacht arrived in La Ciotat on January 3 and was expected to remain there until April 1 to carry out repairs.

At the time of the seizure, however, the vessel was making hasty arrangements to sail away urgently without the planned repair work being completed.

Key Background

According to Reuters, the seized superyacht was built by Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco in the Netherlands and delivered to its owner in 2013. The vessel reportedly sails under the flag of the Cayman islands.

On Wednesday, Forbes first reported that German authorities had seized the 512-foot mega yacht belonging to Russian billionaire  Alisher Usmanov . French authorities seized a $120 million superyacht owned by Russian oil magnate Igor Sechin on Wednesday – the latest sign of an escalating crackdown on Russia’s oligarchs in response to the Kremlin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

French customs officials took control of the luxury vessel as it attempted to leave the port of La Ciotat in southern France – in violation of European Union sanctions targeting Sechin and other Russian oligarchs.

“Thanks to the French customs officers who are enforcing the European Union’s sanctions against those close to the Russian government,” France’s Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire tweeted Thursday alongside a letter detailing the yacht seizure.

The superyacht arrived at the port in early January for repairs and was not scheduled to depart until April 1 as it underwent repairs. According to the letter, the 280-foot vessel was “taking steps to sail off urgently, without the repair works being over” – prompting customs officials to take control.

Igor Sechin

The massive boat – called “Amore Vero” – is technically owned by a company in which Sechin is the majority shareholder, according to France’s finance ministry. The yacht was built by Oceanco and completed in 2013.

The Amore Vero is one of the largest ships of its kind in the world and won “best yacht design over 50 meters” at the World Yacht Trophies, according to Oceanco . The yacht has a swimming pool on its main deck that converts to a helicopter platform, as well as a sundeck with a jacuzzi and various other ritzy features.

A close ally of Putin, Sechin is the former deputy prime minister of Russia and current CEO of Russian oil giant Rosneft. The European Union described Sechin as one of Putin’s “most trusted and closest advisors, as well as his personal friend.”

As Page Six reported, a growing number of superyachts owned by Russian billionaires have fled to the Maldives and Seychelles as authorities in the US and abroad crack down on the wealth of oligarchs. The international community is attempting to ratchet up pressure on Putin’s allies as part of its effort to end Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.

Yachts are just one target of the crackdown. On Wednesday, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich said he would sell Premier League club Chelsea as he faces mounting international pressure.

President Biden signaled his administration would aggressively pursue assets held by Russian oligarchs during his State of the Union address.

A Russian oligarch whose $120 million superyacht was seized in France reportedly told the captain to sail to Turkey as fast as possible after being sanctioned

  • A Russian oligarch told the captain of his yacht to sail from France to Turkey ASAP, per the WSJ.
  • Igor Sechin's yacht was docked in France when he was sanctioned after Russia invaded Ukraine.
  • French authorities tied the yacht down so it couldn't leave, a customs officer told The Journal.

Insider Today

Igor Sechin, a Russian billionaire and oligarch, told the captain of his now-seized superyacht to leave a French port and sail to Turkey as fast as possible after he was hit with sanctions, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

The US and the European Union put Sechin, who is said to be a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin , on their sanctions lists shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. Sechin is also known as Russia's " Darth   Vader ."

The report on Sechin's orders offers a glimpse into how the wealthiest Russians who were targeted by sanctions sought to move their yachts  and  private jets  across the world after the invasion of Ukraine in order to protect their assets.

Eric Salles, a lead officer on the seizure operation, said in an interview with The Journal that French customs officers found out last week that the yacht was preparing to leave the French town of La Ciotat despite having repair work scheduled.

Customs officers also heard the yacht was owned by Sechin, CEO of Russian state-controlled oil giant Rosneft, Salles added.

The customs officers went to the yacht and questioned the captain, Salles said in the interview.

The captain told officers that he had orders to leave the French port and "sail to Turkey as quickly as possible," Salles told The Journal.

After hearing this information, French authorities tied the yacht to the quay with steel-rope slings so it couldn't leave, Salles told The Journal. Officers proceeded to check documents, further question the captain and crew, and surveil the vessel 24/7, Salles added.

Sechin's yacht was officially seized by the authorities on Wednesday night, according to a press release  tweeted by French finance minister Bruno Le Maire. The yacht's captain — still on board the vessel with other crew members — wasn't arrested, Salles told The Journal.

Sechin is among several high-profile Russian business executives who have been sanctioned by the EU, US, UK, and others because of their ties to Putin.

Gennady Timchenko, a Putin confidant, and Alexei Mordashov, reportedly the wealthiest man in Russia, had their superyachts seized by officials in Italy , The Associated Press reported on Friday.

The European Union emphasized that Rosneft was involved in "financing the vineyards of the palace complex near Gelendzhik, which is considered to be personally used by President Putin." They argue Sechin "actively supported materially or financially and benefited from Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine."

In addition, they said a subsidiary of the company, Rosneft Aero, delivers fuel to the Simferopol Airport, which provides "air flight connection between the territory of the illegally annexed Crimea and Sevastopol and Russia."

"Therefore, [Sechin] is supporting the consolidation of the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula into the Russian Federation, which in turn further undermines the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine."

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
