Maintenance and Enhancements for the Sandringham Yacht Club Marina

In 2022 the Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) Marina celebrated its 29 th birthday, and she continues to underpin the overall performance of the Club. Here is an update on the key elements related to this wonderful floating asset that houses upwards of 360 vessels.

SYC have 360 marina berths – 250 of which are currently in the rental pool, and 110 licensed to Members. In August 2023, 75 pens will come off their long-term licences and will enter the rental pool. This is a key moment for the Club, as at that point, 90% of marina berths will be in the rental pool.

The performance of SYC is inextricably linked to the occupancy of the marina, including the occupancy ratio of yachts to powerboats. Equally important is how active SYC marina tenants are in Club life. Currently, overall occupancy is maximized at 100%, with a ratio of 70% yachts to 30% power boats. Though occupancy is high, the Club always strives to find room for incoming boats that are keen to participate in core on-water activities. Moving forward as SYC offers a wide range of events, the Club will encourage all tenants to participate to some degree in club activities as participation is the key to a vibrant club.

Maintenance is another key area of focus for the marina, and SYC continue to invest heavily in this regard. In September 2021 the refurbishment of row B West concluded, marking the completion of a major phase of enhancements. The walkway, as well as all 26 pontoons on that arm, received new timbers, cleats, thru rods, knee brackets and more. The annual program thereafter will see a similar scope of work on row C West, and enhancements to the finger pontoons on D East in mid-2022, all finger pontoons to be addressed on E and F rows in mid-2023, and the work completed in mid-2024 with A West and its pontoons.

Other maintenance works include various pontoon replacements on D West. The pedestal replacement program has continued to advance and recent improvements to the marina entrance (new sliding doors, fuel kiosk, fuel jetty handrails, re-treaded on gangways) have been enhanced with the Ken King Centre refurbishment. In addition to the marina itself, staged maintenance works continue on the wavescreen. SYC also intend on completing a service pedestal upgrade, a changeover to LED lights and upgrades to all fire hose reels by mid-2024.

Other important related work includes the refurbishment to the breakwater to the west.

Seabed depths are a further consideration, and in early 2021 a hydrographic survey was completed. The results of the survey are viewable on the SYC website, as is the suggested pathway for those exiting/entering the marina from the western side. SYC are in talks with Parks Victoria about the siltation build-up in this vicinity as well as the non-operational navigational marker.

The SYC marina continues to be the Club’s crown jewel. The Club expresses deep gratitude to those who had the vision to see the marina’s development come to fruition in the early 1990s.

Sandringham Yacht Club

Members and guests of melbourne's sandringham yacht club can now enjoy one of the finest yacht club facilities in australia.

Sandringham Yacht Club opened its stunning new clubhouse to rapturous applause in July. The new clubhouse stands on the site of the old carpark and is closer to the marina, and to the yacht-racing action on Port Phillip Bay.

Built at a cost of $12.75 million, the new facility replaces the old clubhouse which has stood since 1956. Funding for the project was raised with a combination of a bank loan and from the members who were offered an extension on their marina berth leases, prepayment of locker and hardstand fees, and interest-bearing debentures.

The old clubhouse, built to host the Melbourne Olympic Games, offered 1400m² of usable area whereas the new clubhouse offers 2600m² and will have extra carparking on the site of the old clubhouse.

AUSTRALIA'S FINEST At the opening, the new facility was described by Commodore Philip Burn as "the best boating facility in Australia" and at the risk of sounding biased (as I am a member of Sandringham) I would have to agree.

The new Sandringham facility is not just a clubhouse for members, but a training facility, a function centre and a restaurant open to the public.

While the new building houses a members' bar and members' lounge, it also has an enormous function room, meeting rooms, an auditorium and a restaurant.

The club's function room will be available for bookings from the public and offers food and beverage facilities, state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, a moveable dance floor and stage setup, and stunning views to the south and west.

On its northern side, the club has a huge verandah overlooking the marina and safe harbour. This is open to members with a section adjoining the restaurant for the public.

The auditorium is downstairs and can seat up to 80 people. It is equipped with audio-visual equipment, wireless internet and is big enough to accommodate a fully-rigged sailing skiff.

In the members' lounge is a library stocked with interesting maritime books, comfortable lounge chairs, complementary tea and coffee, and two work stations with internet-enabled computers for members' use. Throughout the clubhouse are trophies, photos and club memorabilia.

FOCUS ON TRAINING According to Commodore Burn, the new facility will have a big focus on training, not only of school kids, but young people looking to embark in a career in the marine industry.

"Certainly, we have school student programs here at Sandringham," said Burn. "In fact, we run about 2000 kids from 25 different schools through here each year. We teach them about boat handling and sailing, but more importantly, we teach them about safety and responsibility on the water," he added.

"However, one of our other big focuses is training young people for a future in the marine industry," said Burn.

Sandringham Yacht Club received $437,500 from the Victorian Government on a dollar-for-dollar basis to build a fully-equipped auditorium which augments its already impressive training facilities.

"We are working with William Angliss TAFE and Holmsglen TAFE to train young people in the marine component of a Resort Management qualification," said Burn. "We also train people who just want to learn to sail as we have introductory and intermediate courses for both kids and adults."

Interestingly, Sandringham Yacht Club is only the second sporting club in the country to achieve Registered Training Organisation (RTO) status, the first being the Western Bulldogs AFL Club.

Burn said that like other yacht clubs, Sandringham must focus on the younger members for the Club to survive: "We have around 2000 members at the moment," he said. "But, although our membership is growing, it's a fact that 55 per cent of our membership is over 50 years of age, so we need to have the younger folk come up through the ranks to lower the average age."

Sandringham's CEO, Richard Hewett, says the club employs 29 full-time staff plus up to 40 casuals in the main facility. Ten staff are employed in the sailing academy, there are 45 staff in on-site businesses and around 20 contractors.

Living on a Boat in Australia: What You Need to Know

The majority of people imagine themselves living in a house or apartment. However, others want to live their lives on a sailboat. Living on a boat has a lot of benefits, such as fresh ocean air and the ability to travel anywhere on the seas. While some people wish to live aboard a boat, it is crucial to know whether or not this is possible in their area. Australia is an excellent example of a country where some individuals would choose to live aboard a boat. The views are truly magnificent, with gorgeous mainland foreshores and mangroves juxtaposed against an infinite expanse of water.

The concept of living aboard a boat in Australia has a liberating quality to it. It’s easy to see why some people might want to live on a boat full time in such a wonderful country. But this raises the question of whether living full-time on a boat is a feasible desire. So, in this article, I’m going to give you information about liveaboard life in Australia. If you’re interested, keep reading!

Where to Moor your Boat?

The most important consideration is where you in tend to moor your sailboat. Note that the majority of marinas discourage long-term moorings. When they do, there are frequently additional fees to pay, as well as prohibitions on things like hanging laundry on the ship, loud parties, dumping sewerage, or any other type of garbage. Showers and laundry facilities are commonly available in marinas, but they frequently request a fee. And docking a boat in a suitable mid-range marina on a permanent basis is not cheap. Most now charge an additional fee for energy in addition to the mooring fee.

To moor in a marina, you must have at least third-party insurance. And, many are increasingly requesting that gas installations on boats and other vessels have to be approved. The Australian Government is now placing a lot more limits on where these can be constructed. While mooring off a buoy is inexpensive, there will be no amenities such as electricity or running water. Moreover, you will have to use your dinghy for your shopping ashore.

In addition, it is feasible to just anchor anywhere, however leaving a sailboat unattended at anchor for extended periods of time is not a good idea. Anchors have a tendency to come loose, particularly in bad weather. Many state governments and councils also have a list of where anchoring is permitted. When anchoring, you’re looking for a position that will shelter you from the elements, and these unique spots are hard to come by.

If you plan on cruising throughout Australia or up and down the coast, you should be able to discover anchoring spots that are good for brief stops. Power generation options like a generator, solar, wind are also crucial. On a boat, power is always an issue since people want to use more laptops, electronics, kettles, toasters, and other appliances.

Living Aboard Legislation in Australia

Living aboard can be either expensive or cheap. It depends on your way of living and your needs. Being at anchor is free, but you’re always at the mercy of the weather. Meaning that if the wind shifts, you have to find a new safe haven. You should also be aware of any applicable government legislation regarding garbage management, time limits, restrictions, and distances from structures in your area. The laws in each state and territory are different.

Maritime Safety Queensland, a department of transport and main roads body, is in charge of creating marine zone rules and limits in Queensland. Keep in mind that the legislation is divided into council regions. Broadwater regulation on the Gold Coast, for example, prevents anyone from residing aboard a boat within 3 nautical miles of a single location for more than seven consecutive days in any 60-day period. It’s also a bit of an aptitude test. This is because if you yell at the maritime cops, they will certainly not forgive any of your little transgressions. They’re just doing their job out on the sea. Remember, these are the same men and women who could one day save you or your boat if something goes wrong.

Moorings on swings or buoys are the next cheapest choice. You have the option of renting a swing mooring from a yacht club for a weekly charge or applying to the government for your own. Again, depending on where you live in Australia, the amount of time you can spend living onboard on your swing mooring may be limited. There are about 4000 swing moorings in Queensland, and you can purchase a lease through Maritime Safety. Renewal of the lease is approximately $40 each year. The cost of installing a mooring block and tackle is roughly $3000, and the mooring holder is responsible for maintaining it. Swing mooring leases are in high demand, and you may find yourself on a lengthy waiting list. It’s also an illogical situation because you need to own a boat to rent a swing mooring from the government.

Cost of Living in a Marina in Australia

While marinas are the most expensive they offer numerous benefits. These are convenient access, security, a safe shelter for your boat, power and water on demand, and a pleasant social atmosphere. The cost of a marina varies greatly based on the attractiveness of the area. For instance, on Queensland’s east coast, expect to pay around $25 per night in Gladstone Marina, $39 at Mackay Marina, and $85 in the Whitsundays.

If you pay for a full year’s fees in advance, the cost of a marina berth drops considerably. The cost of a boat slip depends on its size and type. And, a price list is available at the marina office or by emailing your local marina. A recent printout of fees at Meridien Marina, Abel Point, in the Whitsundays revealed that the daily rate for a 39ft monohull is $70, the weekly rate is $340, and the quarterly rate is $3150. A 39ft monohull costs $43 per night, $241 per week, and $2082.60 each quarter at Mooloolaba Marina. Keep in mind that there will be additional expenses if you live on a liveaboard. These include maintenance, insurance, sewage, gas, extra amenities, and your own personal expenses.

On the good side, living on the water eliminates council rates. Nevertheless, you must pay for boat registration and your insurance premiums are significant. You will also have to show proof of insurance if you moor at a marina. The majority of sailors spend between $1000 and $2000 per year on boat insurance. A survey report from a competent marine surveyor is also essential when purchasing a boat. Not only will it provide you peace of mind, but most insurance companies will refuse to insure your boat unless you provide a complete out-of-water record. There are several qualified surveyors in Australia, and most marina offices can send you in the correct direction.

Limitations for Liveaboards in Australia

You probably already know this, but the official line is that you can only live onboard for around 24 days a year in New South Wales. On the other hand, there are great spots in Queensland and some extremely nice places in Tasmania that allow liveaboards. Some sailors state that they frequently surpass the New South Wales “time limit”, however, they never had any issues with the authorities. But, in order to have your peace of mind, you would have to cruise and do not stay in one place for months at a time. Note that in NSW, there are relatively low time constraints if you want to live aboard in a marina. Marina owners will not tell you that they allow full-time liveaboards, but some do.

The Northern Territory is really relaxed, and there are great marinas and spots in Darwin. It’s also much easier to liveaboard in Queensland. For starters, it’s legal. Even yet, some marinas prohibit it, and others impose an additional liveaboard cost. Others may levy a fee for the use of electricity. Particularly if you have air conditioning. As long as you keep going, you should be fine, but there are specific regions where they will harass you mercilessly, and such areas are canal suburb areas near cities. Some areas, including Mooloolaba, appear to have local bylaws forbidding persons from living aboard at anchor or imposing short time limits, often 72 hours. Strangely, several derelict-looking vessels have been anchored in Mooloolaba for years, dragging all over the anchorage. This appears to be acceptable because no one is on them.

Bear in mind that not all places are suitable for liveaboards in Australia. This is because people would buy boats instead of houses if the government allowed living on boats near big cities. Moreover, the waterways would be clogged with habitation. Furthermore, the waterways would be full of garbage. The only places in Australia where you can live on a boat are distant areas where land costs are low enough that you can buy a house on land more affordably and conveniently. For example, nobody is going to let you live on a boat in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Alternatively, everyone would.

Weather Considerations

The climate of Australia varies widely across its eight states and territories; most of the country has four seasons, with a wet and dry season in the tropical north. Seasons in Australia run counter to those in the northern hemisphere. Summer is from December to February, autumn is from March to May, winter is from June to August, and spring is from September to November. Always keep in mind the weather and rainfall forecast for Australia’s capital cities, so as to be able to plan ahead and wisely choose a liveaboard marina.

Most significantly, once you purchase a liveaboard boat, you will become more aware of different weather patterns and how to be prepared for them. Storm monitoring concerns should not deter you from owning a boat. Thousands of Australian homeowners are buying properties among the gum trees despite the fact that there are arguably more bushfire disasters in Australia than marine tragedies.

In other words, bad weather might strike at any time. While cyclone warnings have been issued in North Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia, storms have also hit NSW, South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. Marinas are rated to handle these situations, so docking in one gives you peace of mind. If you’re at anchor, you may need to find a safer haven depending on your location. Despite the difficulties, many sailors say that they would never go back to being landlubbers when their backyard is the ocean and the world is their oyster.

Information about Living on a Boat in Australia

For some, living aboard a boat may seem like a far-fetched fantasy, but it is achievable. In some parts of Australia, living on a boat is permissible. The rules are more stringent in other regions. Brisbane and the surrounding areas are notorious for having more stringent laws and negative attitudes toward individuals who desire to live on the water. These locales have been reported to demand exorbitant prices. However, the atmosphere toward boat residents becomes a little more relaxed as you travel north of Brisbane.

Even while the environment improves as you travel north of Brisbane, living on a boat can be expensive This is due to the fact that the sites where people wish to dock their boats are also docking areas. These fees may be determined by the size of the boat as well as the area’s overall charges. It’s not as simple as putting your boat in the water and leaving it there. Only a few regions, such as marinas, allow boaters to live on the water. Houseboats on river areas, rather than the open ocean, have become a more popular choice for Australians. This can be a more cost-effective way to live on a boat.

These solutions may still entail owning a small piece of property adjacent to the river,. But, for those who have decided that life on the sea is for them, it is well worth the change. Marinas are popular gathering places for boats all over the world to moor for a fee. However, note that marinas aren’t always used by people on a long-term basis. Marinas, on the other hand, make it possible to live on a boat. For instance, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is one of the most well-known in Australia. While it is true that you must be a member of the squadron to reside on your yacht in the marina (which is located in Manly, QLD), their costs are not as high as some others.

The cost of renting a berth for mooring a vessel varies greatly depending on the size. In addition, there are expenses associated with marina rentals and residing on the property at this location. These expenses include liveaboard fees of around $64 per vessel per week and $192 per vessel per month for its members. The liveaboard costs are only applicable to those who live aboard within the marina. They do not include the cost of renting a berth. It’s also a good idea to ask the marina about these fees ahead of time, as well as whether or not there’s a waiting list.

The Bottom Line

Living permanently on a boat in Australia is totally doable. But, keep in mind that it necessitates a completely different way of life. Because storage and facilities are limited, minimalism is the best option. It is not possible to just walk down to the store; you must plan beforehand. Then there’s the boat’s ongoing maintenance. It’s never-ending, and you’ll have to have some basic DIY skills or it’ll cost a fortune to get someone to come out and fix it. Also, consider the cost of sail replacement, rigging, engine repairs, and basic maintenance such as painting, repairing fittings, and hauling outs.

Finally, cruising around Australia’s coastline is a fantastic way to experience the country if done properly and with sufficient preparation and planning. You get to see locations that you wouldn’t be able to see from the ground or the air. You can stop for a few days and enjoy a location, then find a suitable marina to live in and later on change location if you want to. Lastly, note that there’s a vibrant and active cruising community in most marinas in Australia. Even though some Australian states don’t allow liveaboards there are still many opportunities for liveaboards in various marinas around the country.

Sandringham Yacht Club offers easy ‘try before you buy’ schemes

Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) has stepped up its campaign to get more bodies on boats of all kinds in Victoria, by looking at the bigger picture and offering ingenious ways of enticing people onto the water without it costing an arm and a leg.    

It can cost a bomb to join any sporting club, and for newcomers, joining and annual fees can be daunting when you are not sure if you will stay in the sport for the long run, or even in the short term.  

‘Sandy’, as it is known to locals, has found an uncomplicated and affordable way to help potential new members, both children and adults, to try sailing and the Club’s facilities without having to immediately take up full membership. It provides ‘Day’ and ‘Season’ passes at a minimal cost, allowing users to sail and to use its clubhouse facilities post-race.

Day Pass membership allows for up to a dozen uses and entitles the user to a reduction in the nomination fee when converting to annual membership. The first six days cost $15 per sail (Thursday Twilight Sailing – no charge) and the remaining six days are $35 per sail. Should users wish to continue, they will need to become an annual member. On average, this successful scheme has produced 700-800 annual users to-date.

Proving just as successful is the Season Pass, a one-time introductory pathway option for those new to sailing, or transitioning from the Club’s Youth Academy or the Day Pass scheme. It is an ideal way to have your cake and eat it too.

Users are entitled to one year’s unlimited access to all Club Marine SYC Boating Academy courses, a card allowing access to: club racing, member facilities on the days of your courses and crewing days, a mentoring/buddy system, personalised service, and a complimentary ‘Discover Sailing’ experience for four people. At the end of the 12 month period, the nomination fee is waived should you transition to ‘Crew’ membership.

SYC’s Training and Development Manager, Michah Shuwalow says, “The Season Pass is doing everything that we set out to achieve – developing the students’ skills and knowledge while increasing the Club’s racing participation.”

Shuwalow adds wryly: “We’ve also bucked the trend of sailors being ‘male, pale and stale.”

One of many contented customers making the transition to full membership this season is Patricio Sepulveda, whose Pass had led to buying into a J24.

“I got my Season Pass last year,” Sepulveda says. “My only sailing background was windsurfing. Before October last year, I had never been at the helm of a keel boat or a dinghy, but I have a friend who sails, so we sailed a bit on his father’s boat. I enjoyed it so much, I decided I wanted a boat, but I had no idea about which boat or how to do it.

“I told my friend, ‘find me a boat, and I’ll buy it’ – so he found one, a J24 (he named it Baile De Luna which translates to ‘Moondance’) – and now I own a boat! Then I told my wife, ‘We have a boat now, so I need to learn to sail, so I can take us out’,” Sepulveda remembers, laughing.

“I went to Sandringham to see about lessons and keeping my boat there (it is now kept on the Club’s large hardstand) and I saw about their Season Pass and got one. From September to December I did three keelboat, two dinghy and one radio operator’s course there! 

“In the first week of January, I skippered my J24 at the Nationals (held at SYC, he finished 19 th with a best result of 13 th ) – I would not have been able to do that without the courses at Sandringham Yacht Club,” he says proudly. 

“The J24 community at the Club is very close – I made a lot of friends. On the water, everyone is very supportive,” he ends.

Discover Sailing – the easy way

Over the last five years Sandringham Yacht Club has hosted in excess of 3600 visitors at its Discover Sailing days – 1200 alone attended the most recent one in November, up 450 from 2016 – eclipsing the previous record by 200.

That is approximately 1300 trips/rides utilising five large keelboats, five J24’s, three of the Club’s Beneteaus, six Pacers, four Stand Up Paddleboards, four large powerboats and two RIBS, equalling 100 volunteers and 270 lifejackets!

Discover Sailing days is the perfect way to test the water. It costs nothing, you meet likeminded people and the Club is a friendly one. If you find boating to your taste, the next step is made easy with the Day or Season Pass options.  

Of course the beneficial flow-on effect of these programs is that they are giving boat owners more crew options and more competition. While some will buy their own boats, others will be happier coming to the Club to crew for others, equating to a wide talent pool for both dinghy and keel boat sailing via the Club’s crew register.

Moorings and fees

We have a variety of drying pontoon berths suitable for sailing yachts up to 32' (larger yachts may be considered on a case-by-case basis). The berths are ideally suited to bilge keeled yachts but swing/retracting keel yachts can also be accommodated. Our pontoons are located behind security gates and have water and electricity supplies. Our berths are generally accessible three hours either side of high tide and we have a pontoon available for boats waiting to access their mooring. (Note: Access to the River Arun is similarly restricted to HW+/-3h by a bar at the river entrance.)

Please note we have a small number of berths for small motor vessels but we always give priority to sailing craft.

To apply for a mooring please fill in the form below. Following our approval of your application we will email you with payment details. We aim to process the approvals as soon as possible. All pontoon moorings are drying and subject to a 6 metre minimum charge. .

Pontoon berths - inc light use of electricity at weekends  £225 per metre per annum 

Pontoon berths for multi-hull vessels  £280 per metre per annum

Pontoon restricted access (Ditch) berths  £113 per metre per annum

Side of slipway piled berth  £180 per metre per annum

Cruiser trailer left on site (strictly subject to availablity)  £348 per annum

Other charges related to moorings

Short term visitors mooring  £21 per night including use of clubhouse facilities

Permanent connection to electricity 1st Nov-28th Feb  £142  

Permanent connection to electricity 1st Mar-31st Oct   £55 

Notes to the fees

• Mooring contracts will be charged by hull length overall, subject to that minimum of 6 metres.
• Payment in full will be required from those taking up a berth part way through the year based on a pro rata basis from the first day of the month in which they arrive. (e.g. If you arrive on the 15th Feb you pay 11/12 of the annual fee)
• Any member in genuine hardship should make representation to the management committee via the club secretary.
• A berth holder’s request for a refund will be considered on a pro rata basis from the first day of the month following the day they leave assuming the berth is re-let (e.g. If you leave on the 12th June you may be entitled to a refund from 1st July i.e 6/12 of the annual fee)
• Request for monthly payment will be considered by the commodore on a case by case basis. Please contact the club secretary on the link below.

What are Swing Moorings?

Accessing your boat in a Swing Mooring

You will require a tender to bring you out to your boat when it is in a swing mooring. This may include:

Swing mooring vs. marina berth.

There are various benefits of booking a Swing Mooring for your boat as opposed to berth. These include enhanced privacy and ease of exit from RMYS. Of course, the main attraction is a lower price point. However, there are also benefits for leaving your boat in the RMYS floating Marina, such as shore power, water access, toilets and the marina community. Saldanha Bay Yacht Club

The yacht club is situated at 33°01.080’S, 17°56.000’E on the Northern side of the President jetty, North-Western end of Saldanha Bay.

Club facilities are available to visitors at the following charges:

Foreign yachts:  First 10 days free thereafter R20.00 per meter per day.  This includes temporary membership of the club for this period unless advised otherwise.

Local yachts:  Visiting yachts R20.00 per meter per day.  This includes temporary membership of the club for this period unless advised otherwise.

Visiting yachts at anchor will be charged R46.00 per person per day for the use of the clubhouse and shower facilities.

Visitors swing moorings are available, but booking is required. No Marina style walk on moorings are available. Allocation of moorings will be by the Mooring Officer only. No permanent liveaboards are allowed.

A slipping cradle is available for not longer than 9 consecutive days. Maximum allowable weight is 10 tons. Multihulls up to 48 feet can be accommodated on the cradle NB: Slipping is at Owner’s own risk. 

Non Members:

Cradle hire can be booked for a maximum of 9 consecutive days.  Payment is to be made in advance. If this period is exceeded, the boat owner will then pay an additional fee of R1100.00 per day for every day exceeded

• Slipping rate for Mono Hulls – R220.00 per meter
• Slipping rate for Cats – R440 per meter
• Standing rate for Mono hulls – R28 per meter per day
• Standing rate for Cats – R55 per meter per day
• If Club installs and removes cradle extension a R550 charge will be levied

Gas, paraffin and food supplies are all available in the town approximately 1 km from the Club. Diesel is available at the nearby fishing jetty; water and electricity (220v) are available at the Club jetty.

General Information  Facilities available locally include : inboard and outboard engine repairs; electrical and electronic repairs; post office; banks; supermarkets; restaurants; hotels; guest farms; general marine dealer; email collection point. The Yacht Club does not have a ferry service.

Boat owners want limit on increase in mooring fees

Boat owners in Guernsey want a limit on the proposed increase in marina mooring fees.

When surveyed, the majority of Guernsey Yacht Club's members were not in favour of the suggested increase.

A spokesperson for the club said local boat owners should not be paying for "expenditure not attributable to them and, in particular, the large deficit incurred in running the airport".

They pointed out that parts of the harbour are available for use by all, free of charge, and this should be considered when discussing charges.

In previous years, mooring fees have risen in line with inflation.

The proposal to increase 2024 mooring fees will be made at the March States meeting.
