Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

Before diving into the images of future perfect sailing vacations, every sailor should be aware of some essential information about the intended place.

  • The official language is Greek, although English is also widely spoken, especially in tourist places.
  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.
  • Greece is under the Schengen Agreement, which enables US citizens to enter the country without a visa and stay for no more than 90 days. For citizens of other countries, the consultation of the specialist is needed.

Greece yacht charter

Greece is a world-class, yachting destination. With an archipelago that boasts volcanic islands on the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, discover ancient cities, cliff-backed beaches, secret coves, and remarkable historical sites. Every year, boats of all sizes and shapes flock to Greece for stunning Grecian vacations with unparalleled experiences. To charter a yacht in Greece is truly a phenomenal holiday you shouldn't miss.

How much to charter a yacht in Greece?

Greece is blessed with beautiful weather year-round, and thousands of kilometers of coastline. With this, hundreds of yachts visit and enjoy the summer holidays, hopping from one Grecian island to another. Every type of yacht can be found on Greece's harbors and marinas, which means you'll have many yacht charters to choose from. A sailboat is perfect for anyone who wants a more classical and exhilarating cruise on the Aegean Sea. A 196-foot sailboat with five cabins can cost around $298,000 for a week's rent. A 45-foot catamaran, on the other hand, with two cabins for a small group of 4 adults, can cost about $15,000 per week. Furthermore, a luxury motor yacht that's 160 feet in length and having seven cabins can cost around $170,000 for a week's rent.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Greece?

There are three different island groups in Greece that offer the most spectacular yacht charter holidays. These are the Ionian Islands, the Argo-Saronic Islands, and the Cyclades. The Ionian Islands are found to the west of Greece and feature 12 islands and islets. They may up 6 archipelagos, Confu, Paxi, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaki, and Kefalonia. With charming villages, a bohemian vibe, and picturesque beaches, you will find this island group's undeniable beauty breathtaking and spectacular.

The Argo-Saronic Islands offer a sheltered location and breathtaking natural scenery. Its closeness to Athens, being only 12 nautical miles away, makes it one of Greece's most visited yacht charter destinations. The Islands consist of Agistri, Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Salamina, and plenty of other worthwhile islands to explore. With natural anchorages, water sports activities on the islands reign supreme. And with ancient ruins, historical monuments, as well as a great collection of bars, restaurants, and boutique shops, get to enjoy the best of both worlds on board your very own luxury yacht floating around the islands.

And of course, a trip to Greece must never end without a yacht charter to the Cyclades Islands. Located in the south of Greece, this island group is the most popular and most visited. With islands such as Mykonos and Santorini, these islands make up the quintessential Grecian islands. There are 39 islands in the Cyclades, with only 24 being inhabited. The most popular are Mykonos, Santorini, Delos, Paros, and Sifnos.

Mykonos is best known for its lively nightlife, but during the day, you can visit the splendid golden beaches, the scenery, the quiet and peace, and beautiful architecture across the island. Santorini is the most visited of all the islands in the Cyclades, and for a good reason. Santorini is world-famous for being the picture-perfect Grecian island with white-washed houses featuring blue roofs and shutters, and narrow and winding alleys. And with the blue waters of the Aegean Sea as the perfect view, Santorini is undoubtedly spellbinding. Other islands to enjoy are Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades, with ancient temples, such as the Temple of Apollo, as well as the Temple of the Goddess Dimitra in Saggri.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Greece?

When it comes to luxury yacht charters, nothing beats Athens in terms of offering yacht charter itineraries. With several luxury marinas such as the Flisvos Marina, which is the only marina in Greece to be awarded the 5 Gold Anchor designation, Athens is the perfect jumping-off point to the rest of the Grecian islands. And of course, it doesn't hurt that the famous city features gourmet restaurants, designer shops, and tailor-made luxury tours to start your yacht charter holiday.

Corfu Island comes in a close second for luxury yacht charters in Greece. With the Gouvia Marina, you are welcomed into the gateway to the Adriatic. With a cosmopolitan appeal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and plenty of secluded beaches to call your own, Corfu is an ideal luxury yacht charter destination. And if you want accessibility with your luxury yacht charter, Rhodes Island features a marina that is the biggest on the Dodecanese islands. The island has its international airport, with direct flights to international destinations. The marina itself offers a quiet and safe harbor, as well as VIP services.

Greece is a dream yacht charter destination. With incredible cuisine, enchanting volcanic islands with quaint and charming hilltop towns, and of course, exquisite natural beauty, a yacht charter in Greece is the best way to truly capture the country's beauty and timeless charm.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

The starting price for a yacht charter in Greece will be around $15,000 for a week for 8 guests plus expenses. There’s a vast selection of yachts available in the area, with many size categories to choose from:

- 20m motor yacht will cost around €15,00pw + all - 20m catamaran will cost around €15,00pw + all - 25m motor yacht will cost around €30,000pw + all - 30m yacht will cost around €50,000pw + all - 40m superyacht will cost around €120,000pw + all - 50m superyacht will cost around €225,000pw + all

The charter season in Greece remains quite long, offering warm weather almost year-round. The charter season starts in April - May and finishes late in the year around October. Peak season in Greece will be July and August, the two warmest months.

Most of the yacht charters in Greece will start in one of the region’s main marinas, such as Athens. A great cruise is to include the nearby islands.

Our charter broker Florence Xing has cruised the Greek islands extensively and recommends: - Corfu - Cross the moat and visit the 14th-century Old Fortress in the Old Town, before enjoying dinner in the Jewish Quarter. - Lefkas - Relax on the white-sand beaches, explore the sheltered coves, swim and sunbathe. - Kefalonia - The largest of all the Ionian islands has great beaches and green mountainscapes and formed the backdrop for the war-romance film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. - Paxos - Small, deserted and natural, this island is a great day trip.

Athens - Mykonos

The island is renowned for its vibrant nightlife scene, which rivals its stunning beaches as the main draw for tourists.

Visitors can drop anchor at "Little Venice," a charming seaside district filled with waterfront cafes that offer stunning views of the sea.

Additionally, they can visit the Folklore Museum and the Archeological Museum, as well as indulge in some daytime shopping or a sunset cocktail at one of the many chic Mykonos bars.

Mykonos - Kythnos

Kynthos island derives its name from a legendary ruler, and its idyllic setting seems to be straight out of a fairy tale.

The island's undulating hills covered in golden grass, picturesque stone cottages, and tranquil atmosphere make it an ideal destination in Cyclades.

Merichas harbor greets visitors with a peaceful hum and vibrant waterfront cafes. Travelers can explore the villages and caves and stroll along the vibrant and compact streets of Hora, adorned with murals, local frescoes, and windmills.

In the northern region, tourists can discover invigorating hot springs in Loutra, and with over a hundred beaches to choose from, sun and sand enthusiasts will find themselves spoilt for options.

Kythnos - Santorini

As you approach Santorini on your luxury yacht, you'll encounter stunning striated cliffs and white cubist villages perched atop the summit.

The bay is located near a dormant volcano which overlooks the area.

Sip on a cocktail while enjoying a breathtaking Santorini sunset.

Take a dip near the black volcanic-sand beaches or indulge in deep-sea diving at the readily accessible east coast.

Be sure to visit the excellent archaeological sites, including the 9th century B.C. Doric city-fortress of Ancient Thira.

A visit to the excavations of Akrotiri, also known as the "Pompeii of the Aegean," is a fascinating experience as it is an ancient city preserved to the present day after being covered in volcanic ash.

Santorini - Platys Gialos

Platys Gialos is an immensely popular beach in Sifnos, known for its long stretch of golden sand.

The beach is surrounded by trees and traditional white houses, and is further enhanced by the beautiful church of Panagia tou Vounou that overlooks the bay.

Additionally, the southern side of the beach boasts one of the most well-preserved ancient towers on the island.

All of these features make Platys Gialos a must-visit destination for tourists.

Platys Gialos - Serifos

Serifos Island is renowned for its Cycladic-style architecture, featuring charming white houses and churches that stand out against the rugged natural terrain.

This secluded island is an excellent choice for those seeking a peaceful vacation, as it has remained largely untouched by excessive development.

Serifos Chora, the island's capital, is widely regarded as one of the most stunning capitals in the Cyclades.

Visitors often flock to the narrow, cobbled streets of Chora to admire the sights and enjoy a refreshing drink at one of the island's bars, following a day spent lounging on the picturesque beaches of Serifos.

Serifos - Hydra

Hydra, which was first mentioned by Herodotus in the 5th century BC, has been a significant island for boat-building since the 17th century. The island's charming and picturesque streets have been a draw for affluent hippies and jet-setters since the 1960s.

Strolling through these streets can lead you to beautifully restored old Greek houses, and ascending high up provides a breathtaking view.

The port of Hydra is known for having some of the best restaurants among all the Greek islands.

Hydra - Athens

Athens is a city that encompasses both beauty and toughness, blending the past and present in an interesting way that makes it an intriguing place to visit.

Located under the mighty Acropolis, Athens takes its historical significance very seriously. The city has been in existence since the 5th century, and exploring it is like peeling back the layers of an onion, revealing ancient mythology, Byzantine culture, Ottoman influences, and a modern urban flair that makes it a vibrant destination.

The Acropolis is a must-see for travelers who want to marvel at one of the best examples of Greek antiquity. Art enthusiasts can lose themselves in the National Museum of Contemporary Art, while antique collectors can explore the ancient neighborhood of Monastiraki, with its rooftop bars and sprawling marketplaces.

Essential Info for Chartering in Greece

Most yachts are based in Athens. The majority of the crewed charter Greece departs from Athens to the Cyclades and the Saronic Gulf. Despite the Cyclades being the most inquired location because of the attractive islands of Mykonos and Santorini, a little research can go a long way for private yacht charters Greece. Firstly, the iconic islands are quite crowded in the peak months and even the limitation of the crew ship numbers hasn’t significantly brought down the visitor numbers to the key islands. The strong Meltemi winds make the journey from Athens a subject of elements, inquire about actually starting in Mykonos and Santorini . As the availability is subject to previous charter ending nearby or ideally in your preferred location, it is advisable to hold the purchase of airline tickets until a boat is secured.

The distances between Greek islands are quite considerable, a crewed motor yacht charter from Athens to Cyclades cruising at 12 knots usually does day hops of 3-4 hours, the time increases for catamarans cruising at ca 6 knots  to 4-6 hours. For this reason, many charters, especially involving first time charters, visit the Saronic Gulf – Hydra, Spetses, Poros. It is possible to cross from the Saronic Gulf to the Cyclades, which is usually done when Meltemi changes the plans of yachts from Athens.

The third most popular crewed charter destination in Greece is the Ionian Sea. The fleet of permanent yachts, especially catamarans, is limited. It is possible to charter from Athens, with the decisive factors being the availability of crossing of the Corint Canal which has been closed for reconstruction in 2021, open for only a few months in 2022 and uncertainty about being navigable in 2023.

Selecting Where to Charter in Greece

I want to see Santorini and Mykonos, my tickets are purchased for fixed dates three months from now in August and I need to start and finish in Athens, chartering a catamaran.

This is one of the most common inquiries, and one of the hardest to fulfill. Why?

  • Time to charter – with 3 months to charter, your best options are long gone. Ideally book 9-12 months before the charter
  • Flights vs Charter Location – with the distance between Athens and Santorini being 150 miles, the itinerary might not be possible due to weather, especially if we want to do Mykonos as well. Ideally, you’ll want to fly to Mykonos or Santorini or at least not plan fixed date island activities.
  • Fixed dates- One day up or down can completely change the offer of yachts available – you might need just that one that already has another charter booked for the day before you’re planning to return. It is a great idea to have your charter booked before you purchase your tickets.
  • Catamaran and long distances – as someone who does Athens – Santorini fairly regularly, it’s a great sail – for sport sailing. You’re on the open Aegean Sea and hiding behind islands is possible but further increases the distance – count 24 hours of sail one way and divide among the days of charter (24 hours x 2 ways / 7 days = 7 hours of sailing per day with a catamaran). Not a pleasurable experience.
  • Time of year – Santorini in August is equivalent to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It can be a fantastic place if you have the correct expectations. There are 6,000 islands in Greece – plenty of alternatives for high end restaurants, history, Greek cuisine and peaceful or more popular places. Notice places like Milos and Lefkada are being increasingly crowded as well.
  • Despite all the above – inquire. We’re well connected with local providers in all areas and are able to provide non-public offers or creatively fulfill your requirements.

Boots on The Ground Update: Charter Season 2024 and What's There To Know About Greek Yacht Charters

The summer yacht charter season in Greece is developing in an unexpected manner, with an unprecedented number of higher-end yachts posting price reductions – an unthinkable development given the record-setting 2022 Summer Med Season.

The increased airplane fares are partly to blame, in connection to the ongoing issues in the Greek infrastructure – not enough marinas to match the demand on other islands and continued over-tourism of key Cycladic charter locations. In addition, 2022 and 2023 have seen record increases in the numbers of new yachts – some 235 crewed boats were added to the yacht charter fleet, while most of the older yacht inventory got a refurbishment – in part also due to the EU funds promoting tourism.

The key events in the Greek yacht charter industry in 2024

  • The cost of a July airplane ticket went from $900 to $1,400, year over year.
  • US inflation of 4-9% year over year weakens the purchasing position of the major charter market
  • Continued negative coverage of key Greek areas, from overcrowding of Santorini to DK Oyster restaurant scams on Mykonos continues to dominate the headlines
  • Turkey – following the Ukrainian conflicts, Turkey offered a safe haven to many Russian-owned yachts that risked being confiscated in Greece. In addition to the competitive VAT in Turkey (1% in Turkey vs 12% in Greece – in constant threat to be increased to full standard 24% with possible retroactivity of signed charters executed in future) – visit https://myturkishcharter.com for up-to-date and complete yacht offer of Turkish charter yachts. Greece has found itself in between the EU legislators and non-EU Turkish competition.
  • Santorini Marina – still in construction, unknown delays
  • Corinth Canal – successfully reopened June 22 after repeated construction works on 22 and 23! after walls repeatedly collapsed due to landslides.
  • Slow Opening of New Marinas – Licencing issues – limited births restrict navigation of charter vessels
  • Inflation of the Charter Fleet following record-setting 2022 yacht returns and EU subsidies for tourism that were leveraged for the purchase of new vessels
  • Increase of Ultra High Net Worth Individuals casting a spotlight – just Mykonos has seen Elon Musk, George Clooney, Christian Bale Matt Damon, Chris & Liam Hemsworth.
  • New, Upcoming Locations offer an alternative to the – “by now dead romantic idea of Mykonos and Santorini.” Antiparos is a hot charter location frequented by Tom Hanks, Jeff Bezos and Anderson Cooper. Anafi, Ikaria, Kythira, and Nisiros are coming up and the clients are more educated and receptive to the idea of chartering off the beaten and crowded paths.
  • A New Client Preference for Secluded Locations – A storm of documentaries have our clients requesting new experiences – we thank My Greek Odyssey and Peter Meneas on a journey of discovering his Kytherian descent and going much beyond and more with his yacht Mia Zoi or Costas Spiliadis – chef and owner of Estatorio Milos with the yacht Milos at Sea enable us to offer new immersive experiences creating not tourists, but travelers.
  • New Experiences – from having one or multiple jetskis onboard your yacht to chartering a Greek temple for your event, things are just easier to do in Greece. We’ve considerably expanded our concierge offering to accommodate requests ranging from beach horseback riding and spearfishing to luxury cars and entertainment events.

There’s a lot to love about the Cyclades, and it’s not just the gorgeous beaches and turquoise waters. Take a look at this video and you’ll see why we think you should consider the Cyclades for your next vacation destination!

The Cyclades

As one of Greece’s most popular yachting destinations, the Cyclades are home to popular spots like Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos. Despite their charm and unquestionable aesthetics, they are not as busy as other popular sailing destinations like France, Italy, or the Caribbean.

Discover over 20+ island destinations and 50+ anchorages that we have carefully selected for your pleasure. One of the most beautiful coastlines in the world awaits you.

Saronic Gulf & Eastern Peloponnese

The Saronic Gulf is one of Greece’s most picturesque seaside destinations, with stunning crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and a wealth of activities. The most famous island in this region is Hydra, which is known for its beautiful scenery and lack of cars (there are only 100 on the entire island!). There are also plenty of opportunities for water sports, visiting archaeological sites (ancient Corinth, Epidavros Theater), and of course, dining on fresh Mediterranean seafood.

Rhodes Island Dodecanese

The Dodecanese region of Greece is one of the country’s most beautiful and one of the least explored. The archipelago is home to several islands still largely unknown to tourists, which means you can explore top locations without fighting the crowds!

If you’re looking for a less-crowded, more authentic Greek yacht charter experience, you’ve come to the right place. The Dodecanese islands are the perfect place to unwind on your next vacation.

The largest island, Rhodes, is known for its beaches and nightlife, while Karpathos is popular for its hiking trails. The other islands have their own unique charms as well, but no matter which one you choose to visit, you’re sure to have a great time!

Whether you want an adventure or a relaxing getaway with the family, you’ll find everything you need in this beautiful area of Greece!

Ionian Islands

Located on the western part of the Greek mainland, the Ionian complex of islands comprises well-known spots such as Corfu and Zante, as well as the lesser-known islands of Ithaki, Kefalonia, and Paxi.

The culture, cuisine, and language of the islands are influenced by both Greek and Italian culture. When it comes to sailing spots, you can expect crystal clear waters with beautiful aquamarine colors that contrast with the lush vegetation. If you enjoy water spots, snorkeling or scuba diving are both great options!

The Ionian islands are a great alternative to the Cyclades during the hot summer months since they are not affected by the Meltemi winds.

The sparkling waters and stunning coastline of the Mediterranean are hard to beat, and with so many beautiful islands to explore, it’s no wonder sailing in Greece is such a popular pastime. But what does a yacht charter in Greece cost? And which islands make the best destinations for a sailing holiday?

charter a yacht in greece cost

How Much Does a Yacht Charter in Greece Cost?

The short answer is – it depends. There are a lot of factors that affect the price of your perfect yacht charter in magnificent Greece cost. These include the yacht itself, the time of year you charter, the length of your charter, and the number of people sailing.

Let’s break it down further to give you a better idea of the cost of a yacht charter in Greece.

The type of boat you charter will have the most significant impact on your Greece yacht charter cost. There are four main types of boats available for charter in Greece:

  • Motor Yachts  are ideal if you want to cover more ground on your Greece yacht charter holiday. They usually have more onboard amenities, making them slightly more expensive to charter. Starting price of a Motor yacht in Greece is 500 € per day.
  • Catamarans  are perfect for groups or families as they offer plenty of space and are very stable. They’re typically more expensive to charter than sailboats. On the other hand, they provide more space and stability. Starting price of Catamarans in Greece is from 500 € per day.
  • Sailboats  are a great option if you want to enjoy the peacefulness of sailing without worrying about charter costs. They are perfect for a  romantic getaway in Greece , and the starting price is 160 € per day.
  • Gulets are traditional wooden sailing boats that have been converted into luxury charter yachts. They’re usually more expensive to charter than other yacht types but offer a truly unique sailing experience. Time of Year

The time of year will also have an impact on yacht charter Greece cost. Generally, the summer months (July and August) are the most expensive as this is when demand is highest.

If you’re looking to save money on your yacht charter Greece cost, consider booking for May, June, September, and October instead. That is mid-season, which means that the weather is still very lovely and warm but a bit windier.

Length of Your Charter

The length of time you charter your yacht will also have an effect on yacht charter Greece cost.

A one-week yacht charter in Greece is the most common and most popular option and usually starts from 1.500 €.

For a more extended yacht charter holiday, consider two weeks or more . This will give you plenty of time to explore all the islands at a leisurely pace and usually starts from 7000 €.

Number of Guests

The number of guests you have on your yacht charter will also play a role in yacht charter Greece cost.

Most yachts accommodate up to 12 guests in six double cabins , although some larger yachts can accommodate up to 20 guests .

If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, consider booking a yacht accommodating fewer people. This will usually be more expensive but is worth it if you want the yacht all to yourself!

Type of Boat Crew

Greece is a magical place, and you probably want a relaxing vacation. That typically means that you don’t want to worry about a single thing.  Tailored yacht vacation in Greece  offers skippered and crew options. What is the difference?

Well, suppose you have no sailing experience or simply don’t want an active vacation where you need to raise sails, anchor your boat, or worry about the possibility you might damage the boat. In that case, you should consider having a skipper on board . This might be an extra cost to your Greece holidays budget, but it will pay off for sure.

Having a crew on board is a completely different thing. This is a service that is designed for all of you who seek an exclusive and relaxed sailing in Greece experience . Of course, you’ll have a skipper on board, but the rest of the crew is there to make all your wishes come true and surprise you with some fun activities for you and your guests on holiday.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to save some money, then a bareboat without a skipper is a great option. Keep in mind that you need to have a valid sailing license and fair sailing experience to consider this option.

Type of Service Will Affect Costs of Yacht Charter in Greece

If you want a fully crewed boat , you must decide whether you wish for food and drinks or self-catered service .

Of course, having a yacht fully stocked with the food and drinks of your choice is a great option, but it will cost you more.

If you want to save some money, then a self-catered yacht charter is an excellent option as you can quickly provision the yacht yourself.

Ionian islands.

Greece yacht charter in Zante, Greece

The Ionian Islands are stunning, with striking white beaches and crystal clear water. They also have lively, vibrant towns and a remarkable history and heritage.

This group of islands includes:

  • Kerkyra (Corfu)
  • Paxi (Paxos)
  • Lefkada (Lefkas)
  • Ithaki (Ithaca)
  • Kefalonia (Cephalonia – the setting of Captain Correlli’s Mandolin)
  • Zakynthos (Zante)
  • Kythira (Cythera – known for its amazing ruins)

The islands have at different points in time been ruled by the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the Venetian Empire, the French, the Septinsular Republic (established by the Russian and Ottoman Empires), and the British. In the 19th century they returned to Greek rule, and today are considered a distinct region of Greece.

The Ionian sea itself is sometimes described as a “playground” for mega yachts : if you’re interested in water sports, this could also be a great destination for you. You can go diving in the waters of Zante, get lost in the romantic streets of Corfu, or go off the beaten track and visit Ithaca – home of Odysseus.

Naxos island by night, Aegean Sea

The Sporades Islands , also known as the Thessalian Sporades, are a quieter and less populated archipelago on the east coast of Greece, with abundant beaches and rich wildlife. The major islands are Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros.

Skyros has lush forestry and is home to the famous Skyrian ponies, one of the rarest types of miniature horse in the world, which can be seen both on local farms and running wild. Alonnisos features a Medieval castle, and tranquil, secluded coves ideal for travelers seeking peace and privacy. It’s also home to the National Marine Park, where you can find rare seabirds, dolphins, and the Mediterranean monk seal.

The main town on Skiathos on the other hand, has characteristic white houses with red roofs, gorgeous gardens, and a bustling, characterful feel. Take a look at the romantic ruins of a 13th century fortress on the peninsula of Bourtzi, surrounded by pines.

The magical Cyclades is a group of 220 islands, bounded to the south by the Sea of Crete. The climate is dry and mild, even in the winter months. On the islands you can find not only quaint local villages with their emblematic signature architecture, but also a wealth of Ancient Greek naval history.

Naxos is the biggest island in the group, and a great place to absorb the leisurely pace of Greek life: take a look at the alpine village Apeiranthos or check out the traditional village of Chalkio.

The island of Syros, known as the “ Duchess of the Aegean ”, is a must-see for architecture buffs, with amazing Medieval and neoclassical buildings. The island boasts the famous Castle of Ano Syros and extensive maritime history.

Other major islands in the Cyclades include Kynthos, which features a lovely and old-fashioned village, with scenic churches, narrow paved alleys, and little squares. Relax in the island’s thermal springs, said to have healing properties.

The Dodecanese islands are a group of islands worth visiting, if you are chartering a yacht in Greece. The main islands are Agathonisi, Astypalaia, Chalki, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kastellorizo, Kos, Lipsi, Leros, Nisyros, Patmos, Rhodes, Symi and Tilos.

Rhodes features a Medieval city, preserved for hundreds of years. Take a look at the incredible Palace of the Grand Master , and peek into the city’s archeological museum for a glimpse of history. The island is also home to great snorkeling spots. Other attractions are the small island of Chalki, with its amazingly beautiful harbor, and the more isolated and tranquil Karpathos.

Peloponnese

Marina Porto Heli aerial photo

The Peloponnese is a peninsula in southern Greece, connected to the main part of the country by the Isthmus of Corinth. Old-fashioned towns and stone villages, historic churches, stately monasteries and fascinating archeological sites are only some of Peloponeese’s miracles to see.

Its mountainous resorts also make it a great winter holiday spot. Some of the most popular attractions in this area are the Palamidi Castle, the Corinth Canal, Kalamata Beach, and the spectacular ruins of Ancient Corinth. You can berth your yacht in the beautiful Marina Porto Heli and explore Peloponnese for all its worth.

Greece yacht charter - Marina Zeas

If you don't possess an ICC or simply prefer to sit back and relax, you have the option to have one of our experienced skippers join your journey, taking the helm for you. We collaborate with a network of highly skilled, multilingual professionals who are eager to come on board.

It's worth noting that some of our larger catamarans and motor yachts are exclusively available as Crewed Charters. Greece yacht charter is the perfect private luxury cruise holiday. Nicholson Yachts offers a wide choice of charter yachts and cruise itineraries.

With over 6,000 islands in the Aegean and Ionian Sea combined, a Greece yacht charter takes island hopping to a whole new level. Greece comprises six major island groups. Each is determined by geographic location: Cyclades, Sporades, Dodecanese, Saronic, Ionian Island, and North Aegean Islands.

Immerse yourself in the local culture with a Greece yacht charter holiday. Cruise through sparkling turquoise waters. Here you can experience a bygone era. All islands are rich with ancient landmarks, pristine beaches, clear blue water and a vibrant culture. Of course, there is regional Mediterranean cuisine to sample. As a result each island has its own unique story to tell.

Highlights: Santorini and Mykonos

A private luxury cruise through the Cyclades leads to the buzzing islands of Santorini and Mykonos. Explore the Western coastline of Greece cruising through the Ionian Islands. Visit the infamous Shipwreck beach on Zakynthos. Noted for its pristine stretch of sandy beach and deep turquoise waters, Zakynthos is home to some of the best diving in the world. Undoubtedly, any island group you choose to discover will offer an exciting history lesson and vibrant cultural experience.

Greece Charter Yacht Itineraries

With over 6,000 islands to explore, Greece offers a variety of private luxury cruise itineraries. If you find it hard to make choice, then contact Nicholson Yachts. We can match you with the right charter yacht and cruise itinerary for you.

If flying into Athens, the Saronic and Cyclades Islands are the most convenient. Accordingly, they are the most popular Greece yacht charter destinations. These islands are easy to reach. As a result there is much to explore within a week's time frame. Beginning your Greece yacht charter in Athens to either Ionian or Dodecanese Islands requires at least 10 to 14 days minimum. However, both the Ionian and Dodecanese Islands have international airports. Thereby allowing easy access to embark and disembark.

Saronic Islands - Located 25 miles from Athens.

Major islands include: Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Aegina.

Because of their proximity to Athens, the Saronic Islands were one of Greece’s first island vacation destinations. As a result, they remain a popular cruising destination today. Recommended time frame of 5-7 days.

Cyclades Islands - Located 45 miles southeast of Athens.

This island group consists of 220 islands, the major islands are:

Mykonos, Santorini, Sifnos, Serifos, Naxos, Paros, Antiparos, Delos, Amorgos, Milos, Folegandros.

These islands are further apart than Saronic Island group and because of this, the distance should be considered when chartering a yacht. Additionally, the wind is another point to consider. Because the Cyclades are located in the center of the Aegean Sea, they lie unprotected by the mountainous mainland. When meltémi kicks up, it results in rough weather and potential for the Port-Authorities to impose sailing bans. This is a strong, seasonal north wind of Force 5 to 6, sometimes higher. The meltémi usually occurs in late July through August.

Dodecanese Islands - Located in southeastern Aegean Sea.

12 Islands located about 250 miles from Athens. If you begin from Athens, then it requires at least two weeks of charter time. Major islands include: Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Kastellorizo, Symi

Sporades Islands - Located in the Northwest Aegean Sea.

Islands: Skiathos, Skopelos, Skiros, Alonissos.

Ionian Islands - Located off the West Coastline of Central Greece

Situated to the south of Peloponnese. Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxi, Kythira.

The Ionian Islands are approximately 200 miles from Athens. If departing from Athens, the transit requires an expensive transit through the Corinth Canal and charterers should plan for a 10-14 day charter minimum.

Greece Charter Yacht Season

April through October

Peak season is early July into late August.

Sailing holidays on a yacht rental is not just for sailors. It is for everyone seeking something more than the sea, the sun, and a sunbed. We provide professionally trained skippers for those who wish to rent a yacht and enjoy relaxing sailing holidays in Greece or those who wish to get involved and learn the ropes and the sails during a skippered yacht charter in Greece. After all, learning how to sail is easy. Depending on crew eagerness, our skipper will not only show how to navigate but will also provide firsthand knowledge of the Greek island destinations.

Skippered yacht charter in Greece - Sailing Heaven

  • need more experience and more confidence to take a yacht rental on their own
  • want to get familiar with the Greek waters (first time to Greece)
  • need a hand because no other in their crew may provide sufficient help
  • need a guide to be with them and show the best coves and secluded bays for moorage and/or swimming, as well as the best places in seaside villages to eat and drink
  • want to relax and enjoy leaving the helm and sails in the hands of someone who can be trusted

Our skippers are hospitable, friendly, discrete and knowledgeable about every destination and you will discuss together your preferences and plan your route. Choosing a skippered yacht charter, you also hire the skipper who will take care of the yacht for you and will ensure that you get the most out of your sailing holidays in Greece. When you select from our yachts for rent, keep in mind that you have to provide a cabin or berth in cabin for your skipper as he is obliged to sleep on board. Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. Although some of our yacht rentals are offered only skippered (yacht charter prices include skipper’s fee), you may choose any of our bareboat charter yachts fitting your needs and let us know if you wish to have a skipper (select the check-box on the form of the yacht rental booking request).

The Greek unspoiled coastline and offshore islands have so many spectacular spots to visit that it is a natural start to any itinerary. Skippered yacht charter in Greece is all about your own private cruise where you can plan your own itinerary and visit exactly the places and attractions you want, from some of the world’s few truly iconic destinations to serene coves that are not accessible by land.

Other Sailing areas in Greece

You can view the Acropolis in the evening from terrace bars such as 360 Cocktail Bar - a personal favourite! Avid gin lovers should also pop into Gin Joint and feast their eyes on all the incredible types of gins and inventive concoctions!

The Cyclades consist of many islands you can venture to on your luxury yacht charter in Greece. Snap away at Santorini’s spectacular mountainous landscape layered with pretty white houses and blue-domed churches.

You have many options for your yacht rental in Greece and so many things to do! Don't miss out!

What are the most popular islands to visit in Greece?

There isn’t really a definitive answer regarding which is the best Greek island to visit with your boat charter as each island has something unique to offer.  If you want to be privy to some of the most sensational sunsets in the Mediterranean, Santorini is the spot for you.  The magnificent views and luxurious atmosphere of the island make it especially popular with honeymooners or couples looking for a romantic getaway.  It also has a number of spectacular natural wonders, none more impressive than the underwater volcano that still simmers away to this day.

If Ancient Greek culture fascinates you, Crete is the island for you.  The excavations at Knossos, which was at the heart of the Minoan civilisation are some of the most well known in Greece and many of the finds are now on display in the Archaeology Museum of Heraklion.  Ancient architecture is not all that Crete is good for though.  It is also one of the best places to visit if you’re searching for secluded coves and hiking trails.  The best beaches include those such as Preveli, Potamos, and Elafonissi.

If you want to visit some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, Zakynthos is a good bet.  Shipwreck Beach, so called for the shipwreck that lies in the middle, is only accessible by boat, making it fairly secluded, in spite of its popularity.  The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari are another reason to visit Zakynthos.  Visit them and marvel at the seemingly neon glow of the light reflecting off the water onto the walls.

If you want to party, however, you should go to Mykonos.  While this island is every bit as beautiful as the other islands listed here, Mykonos is primarily known for its party scene, consisting mostly of beach clubs with lively dance music.

What weather and sailing conditions can you expect when you rent a yacht in Greece?

The weather in Greece, following the Mediterranean climate, from May to October is sublime. For those who enjoy scorching temperatures, visit in July and August when temperatures are 30°C+ and you can cool off in the pleasant sea waters.

The Meltemi wind usually blows in a northerly direction during the summer and can sometimes reach powerful wind forces depending on the area. This is worth researching, as areas in Greece vary. For example, in the Ionian Islands, the wind force in July and August ranges from 4-6, whereas in the Cyclades the wind force averages from 5-7.

What are the most popular ports to visit during a yacht hire in Greece?

Our yacht rentals are based all over Greece. You can start your yacht charter in the majestic and powerfully historic city of Athens, or alternatively, fly directly to an international island airport and go from there.

In Athens, you can rent a yacht in Marina Kalamaki, just 10 km away from Athens city centre.

In Mykonos, you can rent a yacht in ports such as Tourlos Marina, Ornos and Platis Gialos Harbour.

We also rent yachts in the Cyclades and Ionian Islands , as well as the Saronic Gulf .

One of the top benefits of sailing Greek waters is that often you are not required to pay a mooring fee! Occasionally, the local authorities may ask you to pay a small fee of around €20 for vessels sized 38 ft and under.

The dodecanese islands.

charter a yacht in greece cost

The Dodecanese islands are an idyllic destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and Greek culture. Nestled in the southeast corner of the Aegean Sea, these islands are famous for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundance of sunshine (read a full Dodecanese islands guide here ).

Serving also as a paradise for foodies, the Dodecanese offer a delicious combination of traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Fresh seafood, locally produced honey and olive oil, and traditional cheeses are just a few of the culinary delights you can experience on these islands.

In addition to the abundant natural and cultural attractions, the Dodecanese islands provide excellent sailing conditions. With their proximity to one another and the steady Meltemi wind that blows in the summer, these islands are an ideal destination for both experienced sailors and beginners.

Choosing the Dodecanese islands for your yacht holiday in Greece guarantees an unforgettable experience filled with adventure, relaxation, and a taste of authentic Greek lifestyle.

Each island in the Dodecanese group has its own distinct character and charm. Rhodes, the largest of the islands, boasts a medieval city that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kos, another popular island, is known for its vibrant nightlife and historical landmarks.

The Sporades Islands

Sailing northeast from mainland Greece, you will discover the Sporades , a cluster of islands renowned for their lush vegetation and stunning turquoise waters. A prime example of untouched beauty, these islands offer an authentic, laid-back Greek experience, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the more tourist-laden destinations.

Skiathos island, the most famous of the Sporades, is adored for its vibrant nightlife and stunning beaches. The island of Skopelos, in contrast, offers a tranquil retreat and is well known for its beautiful monasteries. Skopelos became internationally famous when the movie “Mamma Mia” which was filmed primarily on this beautiful island became a box office success. Alonissos, on the other hand, is a paradise for nature lovers and is home to the National Marine Park, providing shelter to a variety of rare species. Lastly, Skyros Island, with its unique combination of vibrant festivals, pristine beaches, and ancient traditions, offers a truly unique Greek experience.

All the Sporades islands are an exceptional choice for those seeking a combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and nautical adventure. Charter a yacht and let the Sporades enchant you with their emerald-green landscapes and cerulean seas.

The Cyclades Islands

The Cyclades , a captivating group of islands scattered across the deep blue Aegean Sea, are truly the epitome of Greek Island charm. This archipelago is famed for its iconic whitewashed buildings accented with brilliant blue domes, narrow winding alleyways, and stunning sunsets that bathe the islands in a warm, golden glow. Santorini island, probably the most well-known of the Cyclades, enchants visitors with its breathtaking caldera views, sumptuous local cuisine, and world-renowned wines. The island’s unique volcanic landscape has created beaches of various hues, from the red sands of Red Beach to the black sands of Perissa and Kamari. Mykonos, another jewel of the Cyclades, is a paradise for those seeking a vibrant nightlife scene. Along with its lively beach bars, Mykonos is also home to a charming old town filled with boutique shops, quaint tavernas, and the iconic windmills that overlook the island (best beaches for boat trips here ).

The islands of Paros and Naxos provide a more serene retreat, boasting idyllic landscapes, traditional villages, and crystal-clear waters, making them perfect for leisurely exploration. Meanwhile, the lesser-known islands like Sifnos and Milos offer an unspoiled beauty and tranquility that make for a truly unique Greek Island experience.

Choosing the Cyclades islands for your yachting holiday is choosing not just the allure of sun, sea, and sand, but also rich history, compelling art, mouth-watering gastronomy, and a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the heart of Greek culture.

The Ionian Islands

charter a yacht in greece cost

The Ionian Islands, nestled in the sparkling turquoise waters off the western coast of mainland Greece, are some of the most popular destinations for those seeking an unparalleled sailing experience. Boasting warm weather throughout much of the year, these beautiful islands are a magnet for those looking to bask in the Mediterranean sun while gliding gently over the waves.

Each island in the Ionian chain presents a unique allure, with lush landscapes, stunning beaches, and historical sites that echo the rich past of the region. From the rugged beauty of Kefalonia to the cosmopolitan charm of Corfu, there’s an island to suit every taste.

The Ionian islands are more than just a top destination for sailing enthusiasts – they are a gateway to an enriched travel experience. On these islands, visitors can immerse themselves in the cultural heritage of Greece, with ancient ruins, Byzantine-era monasteries, and Venetian fortresses standing as silent testimonials of the island’s storied past.

Moreover, the Ionian Islands are highly preferred by many due to their warm hospitality, laid-back lifestyle, and vibrant local festivals that provide a glimpse into the rich traditions and customs of the region.

In short, choosing the Ionian Islands for your next yacht holiday not only promises an exceptional sailing experience but also an opportunity to explore some of Greece’s most popular destinations. The rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty of Greece make the Greek islands a preferred choice for travelers from all corners of the globe.

The Argosaronic Gulf

charter a yacht in greece cost

When we refer to the Argosaronic Gulf we are actually talking about two neighbouring areas, the Argolic Gulf and the Saronic Gulf. The Argosaronic Gulf, nestled between the western coast of the Peloponnese and the mainland of Greece, is a hidden gem in the world of yachting. Known for its calm waters and short sailing distances between the Saronic islands, the Argosaronic Gulf is one of the top destinations for those seeking a relaxed and tranquil sailing experience.

The islands in this region, which include Hydra, Poros, Spetses, and Aegina, are known for their vibrant cultural scenes, stunning architecture, and historic significance. Hydra Island, for instance, is a charming place with no vehicles where donkeys remain the primary mode of transportation other than getting around on foot. This island offers a step back in time with its well-preserved stone mansions, narrow cobblestone streets, and quaint harbourside shops.

Poros Island, on the other hand, is famed for its lush, green landscapes and beautiful beaches, while the island of Spetses boasts a rich maritime history and an air of timeless elegance. Aegina island, known for its pistachio groves and the ancient Temple of Aphaia, offers a mix of lively beach scenes and quiet rural charm.

Choosing the Saronic Islands for your yachting holiday in Greece provides a unique opportunity to explore less-touristy islands, each with its enchanting character and allure. The short sailing distances between islands and tranquil sea conditions make it an ideal destination for those new to yachting, or for those who prefer a laid-back sailing experience. With its blend of picturesque scenery, historical sites, and authentic local culture, the Argosaronic Gulf truly offers a yachting experience like no other.

Renting a yacht for a Day Trip in Athens and Surrounding Areas

charter a yacht in greece cost

If you are looking to enjoy a day trip in Athens, renting a yacht provides an exciting and unique way to explore the city’s surrounding areas. You’ll be mesmerized by the city’s breathtaking coastal panoramas, featuring landmarks like the iconic Acropolis silhouetted against the Mediterranean sky.

A must-see stop on your day trip is the chic seaside suburb of Vouliagmeni, known for its pristine beaches and the famous Vouliagmeni Lake, a natural thermal spring of unique beauty. Vouliagmeni’s upscale restaurants and cafes offer a chance to indulge in delicious Greek cuisine before you set sail again.

Further along the coast awaits the ancient temple of Poseidon at Sounio, standing majestically on a cliff that plunges straight into the sea. As the sun sets, this archaeological site offers one of the most awe-inspiring vistas in Greece, a perfect spot to unwind and drink in the stunning view.

Chartering options: Crewed or bareboat?

charter a yacht in greece cost

There are two primary options when it comes to chartering a yacht in Greece: fully crewed and bareboat; and then there is also a skippered bareboat. The choice depends largely on your personal preferences, sailing skills, the kind of holiday experience you’re seeking, and your budget.

Opting for a fully crewed yacht offers the ultimate in luxury and convenience. This costs significantly more. With a professional captain and crew at your service, you’ll be free to sit back and soak in the spectacular views, without having to worry about navigation, cooking, or cleaning. A knowledgeable professional skipper can take you to the best spots, while a professional chef will pamper you with well-nourished, gourmet meals to your liking. Some people, that have the means, prefer chartering a fully crewed yacht when they want to indulge in a hassle-free luxurious holiday and want to have nothing to do with running the boat. Is this the case for you? See our crewed options here !

On the other hand, a bareboat charter allows you more freedom and autonomy, and a different level of privacy. There is no crew on board, you are in charge of your boat and you plan your own itinerary, which makes this option suitable for experienced sailors. The cost is significantly lower than a crewed charter. Bareboating provides a hands-on sailing experience, as you navigate your path and create your own adventures. You can explore hidden coves and isolated beaches at your own pace, anchor for a spontaneous swim, and enjoy the tranquility of a night under the stars. A bareboat charter offers the freedom to tailor your trip exactly to your liking, encapsulating the spirit of a true sailing adventure.

Finally, for the less experienced sailors, a skippered bareboat is the ideal alternative, whilst staying close to your initial budget. You participate in running the boat but someone else, is in charge; your skipper.

Ultimately, whether you choose a crewed or a bareboat charter, both options provide unique ways to experience and savor the beauty of Greece’s captivating islands.

What is the best yacht for cruising in Greece? Explore all your options

Chartering a sailing catamaran.

charter a yacht in greece cost

Chartering a catamaran comes with a plethora of benefits that make it a worthy consideration for your next yacht holiday in Greece.

One of the key reasons to opt for a catamaran is its sheer space and stability. Unlike other vessel types, a catamaran consists of two hulls, providing significantly more room and stability. This is particularly advantageous for families or large groups, as it ensures ample space for relaxation, dining, and sleeping.

The stability of a catamaran means that it heels less, resulting in a smoother sailing experience even in choppy waters. This makes it an ideal choice for those who are new to sailing or those prone to seasickness.

Catamarans are also known for their restricted draught, which allows them to navigate in shallow waters and anchor closer to the beach. This opens up a wider range of sailing areas, enabling you to explore secluded bays and hidden gems along the Greek islands that are inaccessible to larger vessels.

Furthermore, due to their design, catamarans offer unobstructed panoramic views, enhancing your sailing experience as you soak up the stunning Greek landscapes.

When it comes to boat hires in Greece, a catamaran is an excellent choice for those seeking comfort, stability, and accessibility, be it a bareboat, a skippered bareboat, or with a skipper and limited crew. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a novice, chartering a catamaran allows you to tailor your sailing experience to your needs and preferences, offering a unique and memorable experience in one of the world’s most coveted sailing areas (explore all our crewed catamaran options here ).

Chartering a Monohull Sailboat

charter a yacht in greece cost

Choosing to rent a monohull sailing yacht for your Greek Island adventure is an opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the art of sailing and the natural beauty of the Aegean.

One of the most compelling reasons to opt for a sailing yacht is the sheer thrill and exhilaration of harnessing the power of the wind. As you navigate through the crystal-clear waters, you are at liberty to become one with the elements, making your journey as much about the sailing experience as it is about the destination.

Sailing yachts offer a profound sense of freedom and adventure. Unbound by the need for frequent fuel stops, you can venture as far as the wind allows, exploring secluded spots off the beaten track that other vessels might not access. This allows for a more intimate connection with the stunning Greek landscapes and a chance to discover hidden bays, quiet coves, and untouched beaches.

On a practical level, sailing yachts are more economical to operate, as they rely primarily on wind power rather than fuel. This makes them an ideal choice for longer voyages or for those with a more environmentally conscious mindset.

Monohull sailing yachts also offer a more traditional and authentic sailing experience. There’s an indescribable romance to feeling the yacht respond to the wind and waves, hearing the sails billow and the rigging creak. It’s a peaceful, rhythmic, and mesmerising experience that connects you to the timeless allure of seafaring.

Chartering a Motor Sailer

charter a yacht in greece cost

Motor sailers resemble sailboats but the emphasis is on ‘motor’ and less on ‘sail. They will sail decently in a breeze but will be motoring around with the engine running most of the time. They are not fast but they are comfortable. And in Greece the motor-sailers that are available for charter are mostly traditional wooden boats.

Motor sailers also offer a generous amount of space, with large decks and spacious interiors, making them an ideal choice for families or larger groups. They are designed with comfort in mind, featuring well-appointed cabins and communal areas where everyone can relax and socialize.

Furthermore, the nostalgic charm of a traditional motor-sailer adds a unique dimension to your sailing holiday. The traditional design and wooden finishes offer an authentic and cosy atmosphere, reminiscent of a bygone era of maritime adventures.

In essence, opting to hire a motor sailer for your Greek island holiday offers the romanticism of sailing, the peace of mind of a powerful engine (or two) and the comfort and space of a larger vessel. It’s an option that provides an unforgettable sailing experience, allowing you to explore the enchanting Greek islands in style and comfort.

Chartering a Motor Yacht

charter a yacht in greece cost

Chartering a motor yacht presents a distinct set of advantages for those planning a yacht holiday in Greece. In most cases the most prominent feature of a motor yacht is speed. Unlike sailing yachts, a fast motor yacht can quickly cut through the water, allowing you to cover greater distances in a shorter periods. This is particularly advantageous if you have a packed itinerary and wish to explore multiple Greek islands within your holiday period. Motor-yachts are normally fully crewed yachts.

In terms of comfort and luxury, motor yachts are peerless. They are typically designed and built with sumptuous interiors, plush furnishings and equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, especially on the larger end of the scale, such as hot tubs, fitness centres, and home cinema systems. Some superyachts even boast features like helicopter landing pads and submarine docks, offering an unparalleled luxury experience on the water.

Moreover, a fast motor yacht allows for greater distances to be covered within the same time-span, achieving a broader cruising range from home-port that you would otherwise not be able to accomplish with a sailboat, be it a monohull or a catamaran. This allows for a wider choice of destinations at a further distance within a given duration of a charter. Naturally, the increased fuel consumption of a fast motor-yacht is a factor to be taken into serious consideration when setting your cruising budget.

In summary, opting for a motor yacht for your yacht holiday in Greece provides speed, luxury, and privacy, making it an excellent option for those seeking an exclusive and memorable maritime experience.

In a nutshell, opting to charter a sailing yacht for your Greek Island holiday is an exceptional choice for those seeking excitement, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the art of sailing. It’s a journey that allows you to savour the sun-dappled beauty of the Greek Islands whilst also delighting in the simple, profound pleasure of sailing.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in Greece?

The cost of chartering a yacht in Greece can vary significantly based on different factors. Among these, the type of vessel, the duration of the charter, and the season in which you decide to sail are the most decisive:

1.) Type of Vessel: The kind of yacht you choose to charter, significantly impacts the cost.

The selection between a motor yacht, a motor sailer, and a sailing yacht is pivotal to the charter experience. A motor yacht promises speed and luxury, appealing to those who prioritize comfort and convenience. A motor sailer offers a sweet compromise with flexibility, harnessing the wind when conditions allow but relying on its engines when necessary. Choosing a sailing yacht is for purists who find joy in the art of sailing and are content with a more elemental experience.

When considering bareboat versus crewed charters, the choice reflects a preference for freedom and privacy or the desire for a catered experience. A bareboat charter appeals to seasoned sailors who are confident in their navigation and vessel operation, craving the autonomy of guiding their course and exploring on their own terms. On the other hand, a crewed charter provides an enriched voyage where every detail is managed, from navigation to cooking, allowing guests to indulge in the luxury of being cared for while they absorb the scenic beauty of the Greek islands. It goes without saying that these two basic categories fit different budgets. Tell us your desires and needs and we will craft a tailored nautical itinerary just for you!

2.) Duration of the Charter

Naturally, the length of your charter directly influences the price. However, a long-term charter, beyond the norm, will involve a favourable charter rate

3.) Season – what time of the year?

The impact of seasons on charter rates in yachting can be quite significant. During peak yachting season, or High Season, such as spring and summer, demand for yacht charters tends to rise. As demand increases, charter prices also tend to go up. Conversely, during off-peak periods demand decreases. As a result, charter rates are usually more affordable. It is safe to say that the charter season in Greece spans from early April till late October or even November, with June, July & August being the busiest months of the year. However, some charter boats can be made available throughout the year, with prior notice. For those looking for a sincerely discounted rate, a quieter experience and wanting to avoid crowds, off season can be an excellent choice. Every season has its own unique charm and weather patterns.

What weather and sailing conditions can you expect when you rent a yacht in Greece?

charter a yacht in greece cost

Weather conditions are one of the most influential factors when planning a sailing trip and in Greece, it can truly be your ally.

Greece boasts a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. During the popular sailing season, from April to October, you can expect long, sun-drenched days with an average temperature range of 25-35°C.

The Meltemi wind, which blows from the north during the summer months, provides excellent sailing conditions for seasoned sailors, especially in the Cyclades Islands. However, this wind can be quite strong, so it’s best to check the forecast and plan your sailing route accordingly.

In contrast, the Ionian Sea is known for its gentler winds and calmer waters, making it a perfect choice for novice sailors or those seeking a more relaxed sailing experience.

As autumn approaches, the winds soften, and the sea remains warm, providing ideal conditions for leisurely sailing and swimming.

In short, the weather in Greece, with its predictable winds and abundant sunshine, is a yacht lover’s dream, providing perfect conditions for an unforgettable sailing experience. Always remember to respect the sea and weather conditions, and when in doubt, seek advice from local experts or your charter company.

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

charter a yacht in greece cost

The ideal time to charter a yacht in Greece largely depends on your personal preferences and the type of sailing experience you wish to have.

Spring (March-May): Spring is a fantastic season to start your Greek yacht charter. The weather is pleasantly mild with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. The sea is still a bit chilly, but sailors enjoy less crowded marinas and anchorages. Nature is in full bloom, painting the islands in vibrant colours and fragrant aromas.

Summer (June-August): This is the peak season for yacht charters in Greece. Expect temperatures to soar between 30°C and 35°C. The Meltemi wind offers exhilarating sailing conditions, particularly in the Aegean Sea. The islands are buzzing with activities, festivals, and events. The sea is warm, ideal for swimming and water sports.

Autumn (September-November): Temperatures begin to cool off, ranging from 25°C to 30°C in early autumn and gradually decreasing. The sea remains warm for swimming well into October. The Meltemi wind eases off, making for more relaxed sailing. Autumn also offers a rich palette of colors and is a great time for exploring local culture and cuisine on the islands.

Winter (December-February): While not the typical season for yacht charters, winter in Greece has its charm with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C. The islands are tranquil and the landscape is dramatic, offering a unique sailing experience for the adventurous at heart. There are also off-season deals to be had for those looking for a budget-friendly charter.

No matter the season, sailing in Greece offers an idyllic blend of stunning landscapes, historical sites, delicious cuisine, and vibrant culture, all under the intoxicating blue of the Greek sky and the inviting azure of the sea.

What qualifications are necessary to charter a bareboat in Greece?

charter a yacht in greece cost

If you’re yearning for a bareboat experience, the freedom of commanding your own vessel, and charting your course of preference, as you might expect, it is only possible to hire a boat in Greece if you have the necessary sailing qualifications. Indeed, Greece has strict regulations when it comes to sailing, particularly for bareboat charters. The Greek government requires at least one person on board to have a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or a national equivalent. In addition, proof of sufficient sailing experience is often requested by charter companies.

Therefore, if you’re considering a bareboat charter, ensure you have the necessary qualifications. If you don’t, a skippered bareboat is your next option. Or, if you simply wish to sit back and enjoy the voyage without the responsibility of commanding the vessel or participating in sailing the boat, consider opting for a crewed charter, for a considerably higher price, where an experienced captain and crew will handle all aspects of the boat. So then, crewed or bareboat? Are you facing a dilemma? Get in touch with us at Vernicos Yachts and we will clear things up for you.

charter a yacht in greece cost

Absolutely! Adding equipment to your boat charter can significantly enrich your Greek sailing experience, allowing you to explore the mesmerizing underwater world or paddle along the coastline at your own pace. The availability of equipment like snorkel gear, stand-up paddle (SUP) boards, or wakeboards largely depends on the charter company.

At Vernicos Yachts, we firmly believe that a yacht charter should be more than just a sailing experience in the strict sense; it should be enriched with water toys that add joy to your time in the water. That’s why we offer a wide range of additional equipment and boards to make your charter more enjoyable. Yacht Charters in Greece Report Unusually High Number of Bookings

Summer 2024 is busier than usual in the Mediterranean, especially with the limited offer of crewed yacht charters. First-choice motor yachts report a 65% booking rate, while catamarans are up to 73% booked. The remaining dates are being snapped up fast.

The team at MyGreekCharter is raising an alarm—if planning to wait until the last minute to book a charter, it might be too late.

“Unlike vacation rentals, the supply is virtually unlimited, and yachts are limited by available docking space in marinas. Having a yacht in a summer hotspot with docking space and charter rights is becoming increasingly more difficult,” says Daniel Asmus, owner of DMA Yachting.

For those yearning for a lavish summer getaway, the advice is to plan without delay, as the prime booking window is swiftly closing.

Key Market Trends for the 2024 Greek Yacht Charter Market

  • The development of new marinas is progressing slowly, restricting the overall yacht capacity.
  • Summer season kicks off almost 3 weeks earlier and ends 3 weeks later (April-October)
  • Luxury tourism has grown 87% since Covid.
  • The charter season is extending, starting in April this year, marking an earlier onset than in previous years.

Winter 2024/25 is filling up as well in the Caribbean

6 months earlier than in previous years, Caribbean charters are reporting 40% complete. The Caribbean, particularly the British Virgin Islands (BVI), is witnessing an uptrend similar to Greece. Mo Pristas from CharterGuru has reported unusually high bookings in the BVI, while Bahamas Motor Yachts reports a noticeably prolonged 2024 summer charter season.

The average value of crewed charters has been growing

Motor yachts are at the forefront of this growth, with this yacht category experiencing a 30% increase in the average expenditure per charter since 2021. This increase reflects a robust demand and a shift in consumer preferences towards more luxurious and extended yacht charters.

An additional factor to the increase of the charter amount is simply the increased size and value of the available yachts, which have grown from a  70’ average to a 98’ average since 2021.

The increasing number of new yachts entering the market is causing concern about industry overload

The rate at which new yachts are being introduced into the market is accelerating. While older yachts aren’t being replaced but refurbished to extend service life, the overall number of yachts is rapidly increasing. This growth puts pressure on an already strained infrastructure, sparking debate among industry experts about the potential for overcrowding and its limits.

The available docking space nevertheless limits this increase in supply. Greece is reporting huge issues with marina availability as new developments are being delayed.

Charterers are looking for less crowded charter areas

The iconic Cyclades Islands continue attracting visitors for their historical and aesthetic appeal, but the hype has consequences, and tourists are looking to less crowded alternatives. Lesser-known destinations like Antiparos , Anafi , Ikaria , Kythira , and Nisiros are gaining traction as travelers seek quieter, more unique experiences away from mainstream tourist hotspots. Greece's diverse coastline, sailing conditions, and enormous charter fleet offer many charter options. A little research goes a long way, with an opportunity to explore more authentic and unspoiled destinations in Greece.
