A lot has happened on the land, and beautiful big lakes were made from the wild sea.

If anyone in western central Europe really well and truly knows the North Sea , its ‘moods’ and its coasts as well as its waves and deluges, it is no doubt the Dutch. They have been mastering the sea for the last many centuries to the point where they know it inside and out, even having wrested land out of the its grasp. Intrepid seaman have researched and detailed its nuances in their cartography, and the daring courage of the Dutch paired with their love of discovery led them to their own colonial empire, to which today Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius , and Sint Maarten still belong and are “special municipalities” or autonomous parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands . At home, however, the subtle and technically perfect dikes, dams, polders, and salt marshes of the countrywide Zuiderzeewerk system – especially important around the Ijsselmeer in Flevoland and in Kroon (Wering Sea) in the province North Holland – are the benchmark of the effective domestic landscape architecture that has made the country what it is.

How do you make the most of the sea? What all you can do with Water:

Huge areas have been reclaimed through drainage and made possible to settle on. Originally the draining was planned for a different province, more specifically for a polder with the proposed name “Markerwaard” where today the Marker Sea exists, in order to protect Amsterdam against possible heavy storm tides. Instead, it was limited due to the costs, in order to keep the sea and the local recreation areas in tact, and to protect the “Houtribdijk”/”Markerwaarddijk” dam between Lelystad and Enkhuizen. This now serves as a major road connection between North Holland, Flevoland and Glederland. Water is highly respected in the Netherlands, but not feared. Instead, the Dutch use it in ways that strategically, wisely, and safely, in terms of protection, benefit them in the long run. They also go for using it to gain profit, if it so allows. Above all, people like to find fun in the wet element, and do so by fishing, swimming, wading, paddling, sailing , and surfing. Boats are in many areas more important for transport than cars, and yacht charters are available almost everywhere. Living on a houseboat in the Netherlands is less a sign of hard times in some cities and towns than in other countries, but rather a completely normal and widespread way of living.

The Veluwemeer south of Flevoland is a popular relaxation and vacation area in large part because of the recreational boating tours, especially to the Ijsselmeer. In addition, many of the more than 60 countrywide canals are open for leisure vehicles and sport boats to use. Some such canals include the Ems Canal between Groningen and Delfzijl, the Gent-Terneuzen Canal, the canal through Zuid-Beveland between Westerschelde and Oosterschelde, the Noordhollandsch Kanaal from Amsterdam to Den Helder, the North Sea Canal from the North Sea to the Ijsselmeer and the berths at Wohnbooten and the very popular Ringvaart des Haarlemmersmeerpolders. The Prinses-Margriet-Kanal from Lemmer to Groningen, the Schelde-Rhine Canal as a connection to Antwerp along with the Rhine-Maas Deltas, the Wilhelmina Canal in the Nordbrabant province, the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal as a connection from Maastricht and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the Twentekanal between Zuphten and Amelo are popular waterways among house- and motorboat travelers. Through the Haren-Rütenbrock-Kanal and the Ems-Vecht-Kanal in western Lower Saxony in Germany, in the districts Grafschaft Bentheim and Emsland, there is also a direct connection to the Dutch canals.

The beach and sea are never far: well known Dutch seaside resorts

The lakes and canals in the Netherlands are connected to each other, and also often with the always-close-by North Sea , whose 450-kilometer-long coast has nearly three-dozen venerable seaside resorts that practically line the shores. The largest of the resort towns is the Scheveningen district of Den Haag (the Hague), with the area of large dunes called Uilenbosch. Also well known and especially popular in the summer are Bergen aan Zee in Alkmaar, the port town Breskens in Zeeland with its marina, Cadzand-Bad on the border to Belgium and with its five-kilometer-long beach, and Callantsoog, which is the oldest nude beach in the Netherlands and has the highest sand dune in North Holland. De Koog on Texel is effectively the tourist center of the island, Westkapelle in Zeeland offers its fishing waters called Kreek, and Zandvoort in North Holland boasts its many restaurants, bars, and accommodations. Katwijk near Leiden on Prins Hendrikkanaal in South Holland is loved by tourists, especially German ones, and is a lively vacation town. Julianadorp is a part of Den Helder and is loved especially for its direct access to the waterways of North Holland. People have been going to swim in the waters of the seaside resort Domburg on the Walcheren peninsula in Zeeland since the early 19th century, as they have at the third largest resort in the Netherlands, Noordwijk. Renesse and Westerschowen are part of the Schouwen-Duiveland municipality in Zeeland. They are located on the sea, and are very popular for vacations and weekends away. Ouddorp and Vrouwenpolder, both on the island Goeree-Overflakkee, are popular surfing spots, and Zoutelande and Dishoek belong to the so-called Zeeland Riviera. In addition, Vlissingen is a hub of maritime transport, and also has a large marina.

Location description

From marina Lelystad Haven it goes in south-west direction to Amsterdam. Here we moor either in Six Haven or in Marina Amsterdam and spend 1 to 2 days in Amsterdam down to your‘ s whim.

Then we lock through Oranje Sluis and the North Sea Canal to IJmuiden. Here we spend the night in the Marina IJmuiden or lock the same or the next day with the accumulating water on to the North Sea island of Texel (50sm, approx. 5 h +, with accumulating water up to 3 knots faster!)

We spend the night in the Qudeschild marina in Texel. It is recommended to rent a bike and explore the island with its nice little places. The long sandy beach on the North Sea coast of the island is especially beautiful! Here in the marina Qudeschild you can spend a second night due to manifold amenities in the area. A special tip for nature lovers or families with children is a visit to the seals sanctuary in the Ecomare Nature Museum on Californiaweg near the North Sea coast halfway along the island.

With accumulating water we reach the lock Kornerderzand. Here we lock back into the IJsselmeer with the destination Hindeloopen or Stavoren.

From here you can set your course towards Enkhuizen the next day. Enkhuizen is an attractive and diverse shopping city. The cozy city center offers various small and large shops as well as a number of creative markets. With old-fashioned shops and modern boutiques as well as numerous cafes, shopping here makes fun.

Then we sail through the Markermeer back to Lelystad, past the artificially created group of islands of the Marker Wadden, a beautiful nature reserve.

The capital of the province of Flevoland is named after the builder of the final dike, Cornelis Lely. The place was built on a polder about 5 m below sea level. Lelystad is considered a green garden city with modern architecture. We recommend a visit to the nearby Batavia shipyard where historical wooden ships are reproduced. At the port of Lelystad, the almost 30 km long bank towards Enkhuizen begins behind the lock. When everything was still a North Sea bay in the past, the heavily loaded ships sailed from here with their treasures from Asia and brought wealth to the cities.

Welcome to the canal city. Water has always shaped life in Amsterdam. Since its foundation around 700 years ago, people have come from all over the world to settle here. Over time, the city became a melting pot of cultures. The Amsterdam canal belt with its countless colorful houseboats is part of the Unesco World Heritage Amsterdam, Holland's secret capital, Venice of the north, red light district and bicycle metropolis, a city where you have to stay once in your life.

IJmuiden is a major seaport in the Netherlands. The city owes its foundation and its name (mouth) to the construction of the North Sea Canal, which connects the city and the port of Amsterdam directly with the North Sea. Coming from Amsterdam at the end of the North Sea Canal, IJmuiden is an important junction in shipping and is often referred to as the offshore terminal of Amsterdam. IJmuiden is also Holland's largest fishing port. Early in the morning, fish auctions in the action halls offer the opportunity to experience Holland off the beaten track. Getting up early is rewarded with the view of the beautiful lighthouse in the morning light. Other sights of IJmuiden are the four locks, of which the Noordersluis, with a length of 400 m, is the largest in Europe.

Texel is the largest of the five Frisian islands in the Wadden Sea. It is 15 km long and 9 km wide. The flat island scores with its seemingly endless sandy beaches on the west coast. The lovely small towns and nature reserves as well as the seals sanctuary can be explored by bike. Typical for the island are the thatched, listed “Gulf houses” that serve as sheep stables.

Hindeloopen

Hindeloopen was once one of the wealthiest port cities in Friesland and has a long maritime tradition. With its old cobblestone streets, it is considered one of the most beautiful small towns in Europe. Life runs a bit slower here and you feel like you are in a picturesque village from a fairy tale book.

Stavoren is the oldest city in Friesland. The Hanseatic city is one of the largest leisure harbors. The name Stavoren is closely related to the type of ship “Staverse Jol”, which was once used for fishing by the Anchovies. Today, this form of ship, with an onion-shaped bow, long keel with little draft, is still used on robust steel cruisers.

In Enkhuizen at the harbor, old merchant and warehouse buildings provide a picturesque backdrop. Enkhuizen was in the 17th century, in the "Golden Century", the richest and most powerful city on the Zuiderzee and is the most beautifully preserved old town on the IJsselmeer. The Zuiderzee Museum in the old packing house is interesting. It provides  an almost complete insight into the history of the Zuiderzee, the fight against the water, shipping, shipbuilding, fishing, art and commerce.

Qualification requirements

For a yacht charter in the Netherlands, you need one of the licences listed below as well as a radio licence.

• Sport boat licence sea
• SKS (Sport Coastal Ship Licence)
• Internationally valid offshore patent
• or a patent for near-coastal navigation
• as well as a radio licence

If you do not have a sailing licence or do not have enough experience, you can also book a skipper for the desired yacht.

• Dinghy and outboard can be booked separately upon request and are to be paid on site.
• The deposit can only be paid in cash or by advance bank transfer.

Lelystad has an oceanic climate. To experience mild or pleasant temperatures in Lelystad, you should plan your yacht charter between May and September. The water temperature during these months is between 12°C and 20°C. In July, the highest average temperature is around 21°C.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

While the charter guests who appear on Below Deck have a great time while filming the show, many aren't invited back for a number of reasons.

• Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
• Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
• Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. In 2021, Barrie participated in a podcast, Pita Party: The Podcast , where he claimed that Captain Glenn bothered him while using his phone .

Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

7 Frank Fay

In Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Charter guest Frank Fay had a thing for second stew Kyle Viljoen. He pursued him on the yacht, but unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Frank will likely never return to the series as long as Captain Sandy Yawn allows Kyle to work for her. Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

6 Erica Rose

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

5 Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
