The pilothouse is open forward to the professional galley and below the dining area with an inlaid cherry table. The navigation station/office is aft of the pilothouse to starboard. The open-plan pilothouse area aboard PATRIOT serves up a sense of spaciousness seldom experienced on a yacht of this size.
The full-width Owner’s Stateroom is fully aft with a centerline berth, custom circular seat to starboard, vanity and flat-screen TV forward and plenty of drawer and locker storage. There is an abundance of natural light and ventilation via overhead hatches and hull ports and the en-suite head with stall shower is forward to port.

Front Street Shipyard: Defiant
A Hinckley Sou’wester 70 built in the mid 1990s gained a new lease on sailing life after a 20-month refit at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast.
Many people consider this design the most beautiful non-pilothouse Hinckley sailboat ever produced. This particular boat, which is now named Defiant , was the first 70 built by Hinckley. The woodwork on the interior was a particular tour-de-force of Hinckley joiner work.
Since then the yacht has put a lot of ocean under her keel. Under new ownership, Defiant arrived at Front Street in 2017 ready for a major refit that would restore her yacht quality and customize her to her new owner’s taste.
A major project was to cut away a large part of the aft underbody, including the skeg-hung rudder, and install a balanced carbon blade—a change designed to improve sailing performance and helm control.
Nicely fitting in with the new aft underbody, Defiant got a new hydraulic stern thruster—any 70-foot sailboat will be more pleasing with one of those. As is more common in large yachts with watermakers that reliably work, several fuel tanks were installed to replace water tanks. This will greatly extend range under power. Also new are all the refrigeration and air conditioning units, and new hydraulic lines.
The talented joiner work team at Front Street made some changes to the beautiful interior. Most of these were to rework stowage and cabinetry in the owner’s and two guest cabins. They built two new tables, both wood works of art. On deck they created an elevated seat behind the helm.
Given that all that wood, shiny or not, is the essence of what a Hinckley 70 is about, one would be hard-pressed to explain in what way Defiant is less spectacular than some new design, not nearly as classic, that might cost many multiples of Defiant ’s restoration price.

Pictures of 70+ foot seas
Hi, I am the writer of The Marshal series. My second book is set largely aboard a 70-foot Hinkley-built sailboat. There is one portion where they are being chased through the Sea of Okhotsk by a 400-foot giagayacht. They are in 70+ foot seas.
I was once in seas like this aboard the fv North out of Ballard, WA. We were off the coast of Ketchukan, AK in a gale-force storm. I’m wondering if anyone has any pictures of seas like this? It is for my book cover. There is a great shot at the end of The Perfect Storm, but very hard to extract that.
Many thanks,
The Marshal Cory Sanders

Oh dear Lord NO! THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING TO US HERE?
God, I pray for you to deliver us real professional mariners in this time of great distress from such amateurs…
A. What is a gigayacht? B. it’s Ketchikan C. You should post your book on the forum,
we can proof read it …
D. It’s Hinckley
I wonder who the “Marshal” is? Is he Marshal Dillion? Is he Marshal Stalin? Is he the Grand Marshal of a clown circus parade?
well if a giga is:
Giga (pron.: /ˈɡɪɡə/ or /ˈdʒɪɡə/) is a unit prefix in the metric system denoting a factor of billion (109 or 1000000000). It has the symbol G.
then it must be a yacht one billion meters long!
A. What is a gigayacht?
The yachties do like their labels. Not much agreement on these but a general rule of thumb:
mega - 100’ + giga - 300’ +
They also like to “discuss” these matters ad nausea: http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/general-yachting-discussion/3666-super-mega-now-giga.html http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/general-yachting-discussion/2099-super-mega-gigayachts.html
Hull speed of a 400’ motor yacht is going to be about 27 knots. Hull speed of a Hinckley 70 (which has a 52 foot waterline) is 9.6 knots. That’s going to be a short “chase”
Not if it is down wind on a Santa Cruz 70.
Since I’m not aware of Hinckley (Though they do make works of Art) making sleds, even a 400 ft sailboat is going to run that Hinckley down very fast. Heck, even a Swan 60, or most J Boats over 40ft will run down a 70 Foot Hinckley.
Hinckley is the boat to take if you want to cruise the world in any weather, though they are fast, they can / have won races, but racing is not why they are built (actually very-overbuilt).
If anyone wants to give me a Hinckly, I’d have something even my grandkids could pass down with pride.
70ft seas? Lol I doubt a yacht could handle that no matter how much it cost to build.
“They are in 70+ foot seas” “I was once in seas like this aboard the fv North out of Ballard, WA.”
Sounds legit.
70ft seas? Lol I doubt a yacht could handle that no matter how much it cost to build.
While I know thery were not 70 footers, the seas were definitely equal to and sometimes slightly above the 42 foot mast.
70 Foot ocean crossing Sailboats are designed to handle seas beyond mast height. The Hinckley Sou-Wester 70 has a 93 foot mast. The Hinckley Sou-Wester 70 is also Bruce King Design, so It will handle 70 foot seas with ease. …and they remarkable easy to sail single handed.
Now…how often do 70 foot seas exist? Seen 40-50 footers, but never anything bigger. At least I’ve never been in anything bigger.
I’m trying to remember the last time I heard about 70’ seas by Ketchikan let alone why anyone would go up the outside in them and not up Chatham…
I’m trying to remember the last time I heard about 70’ seas by Ketchikan let alone why anyone would go up the outside in them and not up Chatham…
this clown is a complete Bozo there rshrew…he doesn’t even know where Ketchikan is likely let alone where one could conceivably encounter such seas. All the years I worked in Alaska, I never saw a 70’er even as a rogue wave. 50’ers yes, maybe even a 60’er once but never 70’.
Many thanks,
The Marshal Cory Sanders
Marshal!??!
Can guarantee he has never been in high seas in any kind of vessel.
50’ers yes, maybe even a 60’er once but never 70’.
Was onboard an 800’ 125K ton loaded tanker from Valdez toward Tsingtao when we ran into a typhoon in the western Gulf of Alaska and hove to for 5 days in seas up to 100’ and that is no sea story. Huge damage to deck gear, rafts, rails, and a smashed boatdeck. Antennae were shattered from whipping, lost one sat dome altogether. That old story about atheists in foxholes applies to sailors on tankers too … staterooms were completely trashed, crew completely exhausted. No way is anyone in any kind of boat going to “chase” another boat in much of a sea state…
A sailboat is a sailboat. A yacht is one of those fancy boats that c.captain loves to hate.
so square riggers with 100+ (150,175?) masts are designed to HANDLE 100+ seas?
of course it is not just the height of the sea but its period and pitch. Big or small, lots of vessels could survive extremely high seas if they were long enough but they usually aren’t when you get this:
70 foot seas near Ketchikan? I doubt it. Maybe the Captain told him they were 70 footers just to rag him a little. I’ve been in and out of Ketchikan for years and I’ve seen some rough water…but never a 700 foot sea.

- Hinckley Yachts
The Hinckley Company’s roots are deep in soil of Maine boatbuilding. The company, founded in 1928 to build and care for the boats of the local lobstermen, has been in continuous operation building such classics as the Bermuda 40 and the Picnic Boat. Henry Hinckley set the course with the Bermuda 40 in the early 1960s when he crafted her stunning lines out of a radical, new material, fiberglass. This combination of elegant form, material innovation and brilliant attention to finishing detail set the course Hinckley has been on ever since in the pleasure boat business.
Today, Hinckley builds Jetboats and sailboats from 29 to 55 feet and supports its owners and other yachtsmen with its network of service yards from Maine to Florida. Two other distinguished boat builders, Hunt Yachts and Morris Yachts, were acquired in 2013 and 2016 respectively.
- Hunt Yachts
Hunt Yachts presents two lines of efficient, high-performance powerboats designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates. Each model delivers the legendary sea-keeping, rough-water capability and dry, comfortable ride of the authentic Hunt Deep-V hull, the eye-catching and timeless appeal of “Hunt style”, and the opportunity for owners to personalize. Unlike mass market boats, Hunts are unique in that each has been built to order, customized to the owner’s needs and desires. The Coastal Series includes models from 25 to 36 feet. The Ocean Series includes yachts from 46 to 80 feet. The Ocean Series yachts are built in Taiwan by Global Yacht Builders. Hunt Yachts was acquired by The Hinckley Company in 2013 and Hinckley’s service network provides support for all Hunt products.
- Morris Yachts

In 1999, Palm Beach Motor Yachts set sail in a new direction which would change the face of Palm Beach, and the future of the company. Today Palm Beach builds Downeast style motor yachts ranging from 42’ to 70’ in express and flybridge configurations

Crafted by Maine boat builders with cumulative centuries of experience, Sabre’s iconic American-cherry woodworking and classic profiles turn heads in any harbor.
Back Cove Yachts crafts owner operator yachts that epitomize traditional Maine values – quality, ingenuity, and nautical sensibility. True to their heritage, Back Cove yachts are single engine motor yachts designed in signature Downeast style. Back Cove Yachts are efficient, practical, elegant and built in the State of Maine.
Vicem Yachts Vintage Line is built using the cold-molding process. A construction technique which embodies all the construction methods of the Turkish historical marine tradition; a modern procedure different from traditional boat building. Based on engineered wood construction, cold-molding uses laminated mahogany and a specific formulated epoxy resin to create the hull, decks and principal superstructures. This results in a strong vessel with a smooth ride, and natural insulation from humidity and noise.
