SW102 “Almagores II” Races Away From Cape Town on the “Cape2Rio Transoceanic Regatta”

SW102 Almagores II sailed back to her “birth place” in Cape Town recently to race away in the 16th edition of the Cape2Rio Yacht Race. First raced in 1971, the Cape2Rio is a 3,600 nm transoceanic regatta organized by Cape Town’s Royal Cape Yacht Club. Currently in its 16th edition, this race starts in Table Bay and ends in South America and is the longest offshore race held in the Southern Hemisphere. The race started on a clear and sunny day in 15 knots of westerly wind and dozens of spectator boats gathered to enjoy the show and cheer the teams on as they sailed away from Table Mountain.

While the waters of Cape Town are familiar to Almagores II, there are great unknowns ahead. Teams will have to face the challenges that come with transoceanic crossings and find routes that pass a high pressure zone predicted in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean without extending their courses too much. Over twenty teams are racing in this year’s edition with smaller boats getting a start a week ago and the larger and faster boats starting on the 11th. This part of the fleet ranges from the superyacht SW102 Almagores II to Giovanni Soldini’s stripped down racing trimaran Maserati Multi 70. Just as he did seven years ago for her maiden voyage and transfer from Cape Town to Genoa, the owner will be sailing aboard his yacht for the entire race.

Almagores II will be racing with a crew made up largely of the owners’ friends along with Captain Francesco Donati, who has been with the yacht since her launching. As per her previous participation in the ARC, Almagores II will be racing to raise funds for the Fondazione Theodora Onlus, a charity created to help hospitalised children. All funds raised will go towards sponsoring Dream Doctors, artists who have been trained to work with children and help them play and smile even through their illness. Almagores II Specifications

Launched in 2012 by the well known South African builder Southern Wind, the 31.4m (103´) sailing yacht Almagores II is a beautiful performance cruiser and the first vessel belonging to the successful SW 102 DS series. The Almagores II superyacht boasts naval architecture by renowned Farr Yacht Design, while both her exterior as well as interior are by Nauta Yachts.

31.4m luxury yacht Almagores II offers comfortable accommodation in 4 lovely cabins, including a spacious master cabin, 2 double cabins as well as one queen-size bed cabin, with crew quarters aft. These consist of 3 crew cabins, one of which can be used as additional Junior guest cabin. Almagores II yacht provides proportionally functional and comfortable owner as well as guests areas. Social life is encouraged not only by the roomy and stylish saloon but also by the ample guest cockpit and sun bathing area. 5 star meals to up to 10 guests can be served both inside or on deck, if necessary protected from the sun by the big sun-shade or from bad weather by the dodger. Privacy, comfort and luxury details are offered not only in the master cabin, but in the guest cabin as well. Built in composite, the SW 102 DS superyacht Almagores II is run by single Cummins QSB 5.9 MCD diesel engine. Her beam is of 6.9m (22´64´´) and her maximum draught is of 4.2m (13´78´´).

At the Yacht Club de Monaco the Explorer Awards ceremony

MONACO, March 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Awarding the owners who stand out for their commitment to protecting the marine environment. It is the aim of the YCM Explorer Awards by  La Belle Classe   Superyachts  that were handed out at a ceremony held at the Yacht Club de Monaco on Thursday 20th March after an environmental symposium dedicated to exploration, as part of the activities planned for the Ocean Week and under the aegis of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach. Organised under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II, since 2019 it is awarded by a jury of professionals. Attending the event there were the prince of Monaco Albert II and many famous explorers such as Mike Horn, Bertrand Piccard, Nina Lanza, Kathryn Sullivan and Victor Vescovo. A large delegation of the New York based Explorers Club also took part in the event. 

Four awards were handed out: Technology & Innovation went to the 25 meter ‘Cachalote’ who also got a four star Sea Index certificate for sustainability: “I’m moved because we dreamt about a ship that we had never seen before. The construction of it considered many elements such as the culture of our ancestors, the impact of nature and sustainability,” said owner Francisca Cortés Solari. The Science & Discovery went to 68 meter Archimedes: “I feel very lucky to have gone to so many places yet I feel like we’re just scratching the surface and coming to understand what the problems are. I feel very surpised that we won the award. I thought that we might be a candidate but never thought that we could win.” The Adventure & Environmental Ethics award went to 49 meter motor yacht ‘Gigi’: “I got a little emotional up there on the stage. From the beginning of this project we wanted to be different. Just to be invited to speak here it’s the confirmation that we’re doing it right. To get this tonight, I’m just speechless didn't expect it,” said owner Carl Allen. A special ‘Coup de Cœur’ prize was handed out to 47 meter motor yacht ‘Latitude’. Picking up the prize was captain Sean Meagher on behalf of the owner Anil Thadani: “We just won the Explorer award at the Yacht Club de Monaco in combination with the Monaco Yacht Club and the New York Explorers Club and I am a member of both and honored to be here.” 

The awards are a way of promoting men and women who are true explorers, perpetuating YCM’s fundamental  Art de Vivre la Mer  values.  

Earlier in the week the inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock also took place. The seven yachts displayed on the quey of the Club, M/Y Beyond Capricorn,M/Y Prometej, M/Y Audace,M/Y King Benji, S/Y NDS Evolution,M/Y U Boat NavigatorandM/Y Santandrea, represented a combinationof passion for adventure and innovation.
