The 25 Largest Yachts in the World

The list runs from lürssen's 592-foot 'azzam' to fincantieri 439-foot 'serene,' with a fascinating group of bespoke vessels in between..

Top 25 Superyachts Now

The new arrivals in 2024 knock the mighty 436.4-foot  Al Mirqab   and  Koru , Jeff Bezos’s sailing yacht, off the list. The “smallest” yacht— Serene —measures a whopping 439.3 feet. A raft of behemoths didn’t make it, including Feadship’s 290-foot Project 821 that is launching this year, the largest build from the Dutch shipyard to date.

Two of Lürssen’s 2024 deliveries also fell short, including Project Deep Blue and Project JassJ. That said, the German yard remains top of the leader board with the immoveable 592.6-foot  Azzam . It also claims 13 of the 25 world’s largest yachts, two of which are new entries.

The list is interesting because most were built in the last 15 years, but there are several historical yachts, including  Savarona , launched in 1931, and  El Mahrousa , launched in 1865, that withstand the test of time. Others like  Yas  and  OK are conversions from other types of vessels. The inimitable  A  is a one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated sailing superyacht.

Here are the world’s top 25 yachts by length.

Azzam | 592 feet, 6 inches

Lürssen Azzam

Lürssen could never really boast about Azzam after its launch in 2013 because of the owner’s penchant for privacy, though it did describe the interior by Christophe Leoni, which features a 95-foot-long main salon, as “inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century.” Owner Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi directed a team of designers and engineers who started with the bare concept, worked through the technical challenges of what might be the most complex superyacht ever, and finished with an unusually large vessel that can top the 30-knot mark when operating in “sprint mode”. Its gas turbines, connected to water jets, also give it the ability to operate at high speed in shallow waters. Nauta Yacht’s exterior features a long, sleek forward area, with well-proportioned tiers moving up to the skydeck. It took an impressive six million man-hours—or four years including engineering—to build.  Azzam  accommodates up to 36 guests, and a crew of 80.

Fulk Al Salamah | 538 feet, 1 inch

"Fulk Al Salamah," Mariotti Yachts

Little information has been released about the world’s second-longest superyacht, the custom-built Fulk Al Salamah , and it has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced in 2014. Even the overall length of 538.1 feet has been estimated from AIS data. However, the imposing vessel, built and delivered by Italian builder Mariotti Yachts in their Genoa shipyard in 2016, is believed to be owned by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman. Last refit in 2021, the yacht has an exterior design by Studio de Jorio, and it is considered by some to resemble more of a support vessel than a superyacht. Nonetheless, aerial photography shows an impressively large helideck, raked masts, and a bathing platform.

Eclipse | 533 feet, 1 inch

Superyacht Eclipse

The 533.1-foot stately  Eclipse , one of two yachts on this list owned by sanctioned billionaire Roman Abramovich, took five years to design and build. When it left the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 2010, it was the world’s largest yacht. The interior has 17 staterooms and a palatial primary suite, with the capacity to carry 85 crew. Both the interior and exterior are designed by Terence Disdale. A proportional profile is defined by tiered decks that sweep upward and bend ever so slightly at the aft ends. Eclipse  has a 185-foot-long owner’s deck, the capacity to hold three helicopters, a sophisticated stabilization system, six tenders, and an enormous spa, gym and beach club, not to mention one of the largest swimming pools on any superyacht. Hybrid diesel-electric engines are connected to Azipod drives that give Eclipse a top-end speed of 21 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Dubai | 531 feet, 5 inches

DUBAI UAE - DEC 16: Dubai - yacht of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. December 16 2014 in Dubai UAE

Even at 531.5 feet, Dubai ’s all-white Winch-designed exterior belies the dramatic and vibrant interior within. Colorful mosaic floors, a spiraling glass staircase, 70-foot-wide atrium, and bursts of red, blue, and green create a carnival of scene. Originally commissioned for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei as a joint project between Blohm+Voss and Lürssen . Known as “Panhandle,” the project was halted in 1998 with just a bare hull and skeletal superstructure. The hull was sold to the government of Dubai, and, under the direction of the country’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, work on the 531.5-footer began again, though this time by Platinum Yachts. Dubai delivered in 2006 and is now the sheikh’s royal yacht, with accommodations for 24 guests and quarters for 88 crew. The SOLAS-certified seven-decked yacht has a landing pad for a Black Hawk helicopter, submarine garage, disco and cinema, and can reach a top speed of 26 knots. There’s also a waterfall that cascades from the yacht’s pool, located aft of the main deck. The yacht’s range of 8,500 nm at 25 knots gives it the potential to cruise around the world in record time.

Blue | 518 feet, 3 inches

Lürssen Superyacht Blue

Lürssen’s newest entry on the list, Blue , which delivered to its Middle Eastern owner in July 2022, may rank at number five out of the world’s largest yachts, but its diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system goes a long way to minimize emissions. The yacht also features an electric Azimuth pod drive that can be used independently or in conjunction with the twin propeller shafts. There is a waste-water treatment system and an advanced exhaust treatment system to help reduce NOx levels, as well as cut down on vibration and noise pollution. Interior and exterior design is by Terence Disdale, Blue is defined in profile by a raked bow with a helipad, an aft deck pool, and twin balconies forward either side of the owner’s full-beam suite. There is a second, smaller helipad aft. The British designer has reportedly penned a feminine and elegant interior, though no images have yet been released.

Dilbar | 511 feet, 8 inches

Espen Øino Dilbar yacht

The 2016 launch of Dilbar gave Lürssen the distinction of not only building the longest yacht ever ( Azzam ), but also the largest in terms of volume. Espen Øino designed the exterior, creating a full-bodied superstructure of long, flowing decks, along with two helicopter pads, two helicopter pads, one of which has a hangar with an H175 helicopter always on standby.  Dilbar  also has an oversized garden and an 82-foot swimming pool that can hold an incredible 6,357-cubic-feet of water and according to Lürssen, is the world’s longest on a yacht. The interior by  Winch Design  is defined by its “rare and exclusive luxury materials,” says the builder, declining to go into detail. Despite  Dilbar ’s volume, the designers did a masterful job making the yacht look relatively svelte. In June 2020, Dilbar returned to Lürssen for a significant refit, where the yacht remains following U.S. sanctions placed on the owner, Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, in 2022. The yacht’s value is estimated to be $600 million.

Al Saïd | 508 feet, 5 inches

Al Said measures 508'5" and was built by Lurssen Yachts

Another 500-plus-foot yacht from Lürssen, the original Project Sunflower gained its official name of Al Saïd following its launch in 2016. Espen Øino’s exterior is akin to a classic cruise liner, complete with the twin-exhaust stacks in the center of the superstructure. Owned by the Sultan of Oman, the yacht was listed for the sale for the first time in April 2022 for an undisclosed sum, but a buyer has yet to be confirmed. The six-decked  Al Saïd  can carry 154 crew and an estimated 70 guests across 26 suites. Lürssen reports a top speed of 22 knots. The London-based Redman Whiteley Dixon studio designed the interior, which includes a concert hall that can hold a 50-piece orchestra, a private cinema for 50 people; you’ll also find a medical room and dental care on board.

A+ | 483 feet, 1 inch

Lürssen Topaz largest yachts in the world

Very little is known about A+ (formerly Topaz) , which was launched by Lürssen in 2012. Tim Heywood Designs did the exterior, which features helipads on the foredeck and amidships on an upper deck. A lower aft deck includes a swimming pool. The German yard has not released any images of the Terence Disdale interior. Reported to be owned by Manchester City Football Club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan—Emirati royalty and deputy prime minister of the UAE— A+  is equipped with a 40-foot Vikal catamaran beachlander and is powered by six Wärtsilä engines to reach a top speed of 22 knots. It can carry 62 guests and up to 79 crew and was last refit in 2022.

Prince Abdulaziz | 482 feet, 3 inches

Prince Abdulaziz

The 5,200-tonne Prince Abdulaziz is one of the Saudi Royal family’s yachts, its first owner being King Fahd. Designed by Maierform, the yacht was the longest and tallest in the world at the time of its launch, a title the 482.3-foot  Prince Abdulaziz  held for 22 years until  Dubai  launched in 2006. The late David Nightingale Hicks, known for his use of bright colors, was the interior designer. The lobby is said to be a replica of the Titanic . The yacht is also rumored to be carrying surface-to-air missiles, though that may be an urban legend. Launched by Helsingør Værft in Denmark in 1984, it was last refit in 2023.

OK | 479 feet

Ohima Shipbuilding's OK

Originally built by Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding in 1982, the semisubmersible heavy lift ship was used for decades by DYT Yacht Transport as float-on yacht carrier. In 2022, the vessel underwent a private conversion at Karmarine shipyard in Turkey, turning it into a luxury, though highly unusual, yacht named OK . Modifications include a matte-black paint job, gold-tinted glazing, and teak decking. The vessel’s 328-foot submersible aft deck—a feature that first attracted her new owner, who uses OK to transport their 150-foot ketch—is now covered in a carpet of artificial grass. A 40-tonne crane allows for the safe and easy launch and retrieval of a vast range of toys, including a seaplane. The interior by Bozca Design is reported to include accommodation for 20 guests, a botanical garden, and a crazy Willy Wonka–inspired glass elevator that operates outside of the yacht’s superstructure.

Opera | 479 feet

Lürssen Yacht Opera

Very little is known about Lürssen’s mysterious superyacht Opera , though it’s thought to be a rebuild of Project Sassi, which was destroyed in a fire in 2018 at the German shipyard. Now four feet longer than the first iteration, the superyacht became the 11th largest yacht in the world when it delivered to its patient owner in 2023. Exterior and interior designed by Terence Disdale, Opera has a whopping 66-foot beam and an interior volume exceeding 10,000GT. No interior images have been released yet, though judging by its two swimming pools, one with a lifting floor, and two helipads—one on the bow and one on the upper aft deck—it seems no expense has been spared.

El Mahrousa | 478 feet, 1 inch

"El Mahrousa" Yacht, Samuda Brothers

El Mahrousa , which means “The Protected” in Arabic, is currently Egypt’s presidential yacht, though the 478.1-footer has a separate history as that country’s royal yacht. The London-based Samuda Brothers began the build in 1863, and it was launched in 1865. The world’s oldest superyacht—and formerly the world’s biggest—was originally built for the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, and later carried three Egyptian kings into exile. The yacht was also at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. It features external design by the British naval architect Sir Oliver Lang and has had multiple modifications over the years, including a lengthening by 40 feet in 1872 and another 17 feet in 1905. During the second refit, the owners replaced its paddle-wheel engines with turbine-driven propellers. The yacht, in care of the Egyptian Navy, occasionally goes to sea for a day or two. In 2015, it was used to inaugurate the new Suez Canal.

Project Luminance | 475 feet, 7 inches

Superyacht Lumaniance

Delivered in 2024, Project Luminance (the real name is yet to be confirmed) is Lürssen’s newest entry on the list. Exterior designed by Espen Øino, the yacht has a raked bow, a contrasting paint job in a dark blue hull and silver superstructure and a whopping 8,999 gross tons of interior volume. Few details are yet known about the gigayacht owned by Ukrainian mining and financial services mogul Rinat Akhmetov, including the interior by Francois Zuretti, but aerial shots reveal twin helicopter pads—one on the foredeck and another high up aft—a large beach club, and an infinity pool, with a private spa pool area on the foredeck.

A | 468 feet, 5 inches

Nobiskrug sailing yacht A.

Undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects ever delivered by German shipyard Nobiskrug, the Philippe Starck-designed A is a wild fantasy of the future. Delivered in 2017, the futuristic look of  sailing yacht  A includes smooth, silver-metallic surfaces and windows that look nearly invisible, a 26-foot draft, three composite masts that bend slightly, and a deck hidden by high bulwarks. The Philippe Starck–design is a wild fantasy yacht of the future. The 468-foot sailing yacht is a technical victory for Nobiskrug , which developed composite fashion plates to create the unusual shapes without compromising any strength or fluidity. It has the tallest freestanding composite masts on any sailing vessel, a diesel-electric propulsion system, and state-of-the-art navigation systems. The boat also reportedly has an underwater viewing platform in the keel. Starck’s traditional interior features dark wood, copper accents, and cozy patterned carpets. The split-deck main salon is divided into zoned seating areas with integrated bookshelves. A remains today the world’s largest sailing yacht six years after its launch, though many argue it is better defined as a sail-assisted yacht.

Nord | 466 feet

Lürssen OPUS Launch

Nord was announced in 2015 but didn’t hit the water until its 2020 sea trials in the Baltic Sea. The 466-foot yacht features interior design by Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard and was Lürssen’s first yacht launched from its floating shed at its facility in Vegasack. Boasting top-tier amenities, the yacht includes a sports and diving center on the lower deck, multiple tenders ranging in size up to 50 feet and a large swimming pool. The two helipads support the yacht’s long-range cruising capabilities for autonomous exploration, and a retractable hangar means a helicopter can slide neatly into the superstructure for storage when not in use. A generous 20 staterooms accommodate 36 guests across six decks, while a sleek aft-sloping superstructure gives Nord an individual profile on the water.

Yas | 462 feet, 6 inches

Superyacht Yas in Barcelona

As a converted yacht, Yas is one of the most interesting vessels on this list. The dolphin-like exterior was originally a former Dutch Navy frigate that launched in 1978 and eventually sold to the navy of the United Arab Emirates, where it was renamed Al Emirat . The yacht underwent its dramatic conversion in a facility in Abu Dhabi’s main port, emerging as a gleaming superyacht in 2011, with one of the most interesting profiles on the water. It was eventually delivered four years later. Reportedly owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, half-brother of the president of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the design by Paris-based Pierrejean Vision is defined by massive glass surfaces. Yas can accommodate 60 guests and 58 crew members. Mated to a steel hull, the superstructure is the largest composite edifice ever built.

Solaris | 459 feet, 3 inches

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

Owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the 476-foot  Solaris  was one of the largest yachts to deliver in 2021. Last refit in 2022 at MB92 in Barcelona, the vast, highly private explorer is built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft and features a displacement steel hull with bulbous bow and steel superstructure with teak decks. The eight-deck exterior by Australian designer Marc Newson houses a large helipad, sundeck, spacious beach club aft and 21,527 square feet of glass, the largest panes to ever be built into a yacht. Lloyd Werft also built the Russian billionaire’s previous explorer yacht Luna , which he reportedly sold for $360 million to his close friend Farkhad Akhmedov in 2014.

Ocean Victory | 459 feet, 3 inches

Fincantieri Yachts’ 459-foot Ocean Victory Photo by Trevor Coppock / TheYachtPhoto.com

The largest motoryacht ever built in Italy, Fincantieri’s Ocean Victory is owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Rashnikov, who was sanctioned in 2022. The seven-deck exterior by Espen Øino includes two helideck platforms and a hangar belowdecks, as well as exceptional outdoor social areas and a floodable tender dock. Ocean Victory has accommodations for 28 guests as well as quarters for 56 crew. The interior by Alberto Pinto remains a secret, aside from the yacht’s six pools, a 3,300-square-foot spa, and an underwater observation room.

Scheherazade | 459 feet, 3 inches

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

The 459.3-foot, Lürssen-built Scheherazade (formerly known as Project Lightning) was delivered in June 2020, with exterior design by Espen Øino and interior design by Francois Zuretti. Two helipads, forward and aft, and a large beach club aft are visible from aerial photographs, but aside from the yacht’s reported seven-foot beam, 40 crew and unique drone-crashing system for privacy, further details have not yet been released. The reason may lie with the yacht’s unofficial owner, believed to be Russian president Vladimir Putin. In May 2022, Italian authorities froze Scheherazade in the port of Marina di Carrara following an investigation conducted by Italian financial police who found the ship’s beneficial owner had “significant economic and business ties” to high-ranking Russian government officials, though the results of the investigation to date remain inconclusive.

Al Salamah | 456 feet

Lürssen Al Salamah gigayacht

When Lürssen launched Al Salamah in 1999, it was the third-largest yacht in the world. Its number 20 ranking shows how much has changed in the last 20 years. Code-named MIPOS, or Mission Possible, the yacht was designed by Terence Disdale . Originally owned by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the yacht was put up for sale for $280 million in in 2013 before it was reportedly given to Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as a gift. The large imposing exterior is primarily protected space, with an upper deck exposed to the elements. Al Salamah has staterooms for 40 guests, including two owner suites, 11 VIP staterooms, and eight twin cabins. The yacht can carry up to 96 crew and has a top speed of 22 knots. Al Salamah was last refitted in 2009.

Rising Sun | 454 feet, 1 inch

Lürssen Rising Sun superyacht

Designed by the original guru of yacht designers, Jon Bannenberg, Rising Sun was built by Lürssen for Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and is currently owned by billionaire David Geffen, who reportedly paid $590 million for the yacht. The yacht comes with a gym, a grand piano, multiple swimming pools, a beauty salon, and a spa with a sauna. Delivered in 2004 and last refit in 2022, the yacht’s exterior is defined by banks of windows across the superstructure. Rising Sun has 86,000 square feet of living space in 82 rooms. It can accommodate 18 guests in nine cabins, with the capacity to carry up to 46 crew. The interior by Seccombe Design includes a gym, cinema, and wine cellar, and the rear cockpit deck was designed as a basketball court. Geffen received global media backlash in 2020 for his “tone deaf” social-media posts that pictured himself on board his yacht during Covid-19 lockdown.

Flying Fox | 446 feet, 2 inches

Lürssen's Flying Fox superyacht.

The 446.2-foot  Flying Fox is arguably the most high-profile yacht on this list, primarily for being the largest yacht available on the charter market. In 2022, it was also singled out as “blocked property” by U.S. authorities in 2022 due to its previous management Imperials Yachts, which was on the US sanctions list. The yacht’s owner, however, Russian billionaire Dmitry Kamenshchik, is not sanctioned, so the yacht was turned over to him and returned to charter in 2024. Key features of the Espen Øino-designed exterior are a curvaceous dove-gray hull and a 3.7-foot swimming pool that runs athwartship on the main aft deck, the largest ever found on board a yacht. A two-decked spa also gives guests access to a cryosauna, hammam, and relaxation room with a fold-down balcony at sea level. Packed to the rafters with the latest amenities, the yacht holds a diving center, a decompression chamber, and two helipads. Flying Fox is PYC compliant and can accommodate 25 guests.

Savarona | 446 feet, 2 inches

Savarona superyacht 25 top yachgts

Launched in 1931, and by far the largest and fastest private yacht of her day, Savarona was built for American heiress Emily Roebling Cadwalader and is easily identified by its two mustard-colored funnels. The yacht was eventually acquired by Turkey to be the presidential yacht of Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey. Jane’s Fighting Ships described the yacht in 1949 as “probably the most sumptuously fitted yacht afloat.”  Savarona was later converted to a training ship for the Turkish Navy and, in 1978, destroyed by fire. The yacht laid in tatters for 10 years. A Turkish businessman spent around $45 million refurbishing Savarona , commissioning Donald Starkey for the interior and replacing the original steam-turbine engines with modern Caterpillar diesels. Savarona became Turkey’s official presidential yacht again in 2014, accommodating up to 34 guests in 17 suites and carrying up to 48 crew. Amenities include a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, a 280-foot grand staircase, a movie theater and a library dedicated to Atatürk.

Crescent | 443 feet

Lürssen Crescent superyacht Larry Ellison

Last refit in 2021, Espen Øino’s dark hull and tiered superstructure was one of the most exciting launches of 2018. Called Project Thunder internally at Lürssen, the custom-built yacht features cutouts along the hull sides that allow full ocean views from the saloon on the primary deck, as part of Crescent ’s distinctive curved superstructure. Its most noteworthy feature is the jaw-dropping bank of three-deck-high windows in the center of the yacht. This architectural feature serves as the centerpiece of a very compelling design. The yacht has accommodations for 18 guests in nine staterooms. Little is known about the François Zuretti-designed interior, other than Lürssen describing it as being “traditionally styled.” If it lives up to Crescent ’s brash exterior, the complete yacht promises to be an entirely groundbreaking design. In March 2022, Crescent was detained by Spain as property of Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin, who is sanctioned in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Serene | 439 feet, 3 inches

Fincantieri Serene superyacht

Serene  is the yacht that launched Fincantieri into the superyacht segment, and what a debut it was. The largest yacht ever launched in Italy when it was delivered in 2011 (surpassed three years later by Ocean Victory ), the Espen Øino seven-deck design features a long, sleek blue hull crowned by a white superstructure. Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design created the 43,056-square-foot interior for a Russian owner, which includes a double height atrium with a piano lounge at the top and a vast open-plan main salon below. Sunken LEDs and bright pink and purple neon lights create a modern party vibe in the social areas, which contrast with the elaborate yet more traditional guest suites. A spiral staircase with intricate metal banisters soars through the heart of the yacht. The open stern area has a winter garden (enclosed glasshouse) that allows dining in all seasons. Serene also has two helipads and a hangar, a big swimming pool, and a tender garage large enough for a submarine.

SOMNIO Yacht – World’s Largest Yacht Will Launch in 2024

SOMNIO yacht is the name of an exclusive new yacht project that will measure 222 meters (728 ft) and will become the new largest yacht in the world, both by weight and length.

This $600 million project has been described as a residential cruise ship designed to take its exclusive passengers around the world to the most sought-after destinations in remote places.

The interior of the SOMNIO yacht will be made up of 39 individual apartments, which are to be sold separately, giving this mega yacht more than one owner.

The yacht is currently being built by VARD in Norway and is expected to set sail sometime in 2024.

Somnio largest Super yacht

SOMNIO yacht interior

While the exterior of the SOMNIO yacht is being constructed by a shipyard specialized in cruise ships, the interior is unmistakably that of a superyacht.

The London-based design house Winch will collaborate with Tillberg of Sweden, both of which have extensive experience in the world of yacht design.

This will elevate the interior of SOMNIO and set it apart from other residential vessels like, for example, THE WORLD, which appeals to a far more budget-conscious target audience.

interior somnio living space

By combining the upscale amenities and design of a super yacht with the capabilities and facilities of a luxury cruise liner, SOMNIO is meant to cater to those who want to explore remote corners of the world from the comfort of their own home on the water.

The SOMNIO yacht will have 39 apartments available for purchase which can be customized with additional rooms or private facilities.

While a large portion of the yacht will be shared by all residents, SOMNIO also prioritizes the privacy that a private yacht might provide.

Buyers are encouraged to add a kitchen to their apartments to make themselves self-sufficient and able to cook for themselves on longer journeys.

However, an onboard restaurant with room service is available to cater to the needs of residents should they want a more luxurious experience.

interior somnio external

Apartments onboard the SOMNIO yacht range from just one-bedroom suites to four-bedroom residences, which can be customized to include a library, massage room, private gym or office space.

Sizes will start at 182m2, which includes 148m2 interior space and a 34m2 terrace. The largest apartment available is the 963m2 penthouse which spans across the entire top deck.

With 602m2 interior space and a spacious 361m2 deck, this property is guaranteed to attract high-profile buyers.

The interior design is entirely customizable, and buyers are invited to submit their ideas and requirements to the team at Winch.

The idea is for each resident to customize their living space to their own lifestyle, which might include extended stays onboard or several shorter trips.

Some might plan to work onboard while others will spend time with their families, which might require more space.

In addition to a large swimming pool, multiple jacuzzis, and several in-house restaurants, SOMNIO yacht offers a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, a large beach club with water sports equipment, and a panorama lounge to its residents.

Specifications

SOMNIO will become the new largest yacht in the world, measuring 222 meters (728 ft) and taking the title from AZZAM.

At a total weight of 33,500 tons, this massive yacht is often compared to a small cruise ship that caters to the richest and wealthiest.

However, instead of joining the never-ending race of building new super yachts, SOMNIO is set to create an entirely new niche, combining yachts and cruise ships into the so-called yacht liner.

1399 0101 Aparment Living Area sp 76 Cam005 mb 01 Winch Design

According to Jim Dixon, the creative director of yachts at Winch Design, a large part of the building process of the SOMNIO yacht will be similar to that of a cruise ship.

VARD, where the SOMNIO yacht is being constructed, has extensive experience in this field which is why the shipyard was chosen for this project.

Erik Bredhe is just one prominent name behind this high-profile project. The former Captain of the residential cruise ship THE WORLD is part of a steering committee that will be in charge of selecting residents for SOMNIO and inviting them to purchase apartments.

With this, he hopes to create a “community of like-minded individuals” on board the mega yacht.

Even though the launch of SOMNIO still lies at least two years in the future, there is already considerable interest in this new yacht, according to Jim Dixon.

Since the onboard apartments are highly customizable, there is even the possibility of one owner purchasing more than one residence aboard the yacht.

Somnio worlds argest yacht

This unique new yacht project will feature six decks, a large swimming pool aft of the vessel as well as a full beach club.

The 39 apartments will be spread across the decks and only the largest of which will occupy the entire top deck.

This penthouse suite will be the most exclusive onboard the SOMNIO yacht and is expected to sell for far more than the estimated $20 million for smaller apartments.

Digital renders of the mega yacht portray it with a metallic blue exterior with white elements and a large aluminum superstructure. The decks will be made of light teak with white or cream deck furniture.

The front of SOMNIO will have space for a spacious helipad which allows even large aircraft to land comfortably.

Somnio Super yacht

The SOMNIO yacht will follow an itinerary all around the world, prioritizing less-visited locations to be able to provide unique experiences to its residents.

The highly-experienced crew is prepared to cater to every need of its guests and adjust the route according to the wishes of the residents. ‘

Day trips and land excursions are, of course, available on request, as well as special events and celebrations.

SOMNIO is a luxury project , and as to be expected, the price tag of this mega yacht is sizable. The project is estimated to cost between $500 and $600 million, although an exact figure is not publicly available.

The 39 luxury apartments will be available for $20 million each, although sales are expected to be by invite only.

Each apartment will be customizable and can be adapted to the needs and lifestyle of each resident.

A 72-meter super yacht Project 2024 by Feadship

Project 2024, a 72.6-meter mega yacht built by Feadship, has been announced

Feadship , a Dutch yacht building company, has collaborated with Nauta Design to offer Project 2024 , a 72m high speed luxury yacht prototype. Project 2024, which was unveiled at an online media briefing, was designed in collaboration with Nauta and highlights marine architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects . The idea was developed in response to a number of customer demands, according to the builder, and is tailored to clients who "have no expertise nor concern in the complicated technological aspects of a new construction."

Project 2024, on the other hand, provides a "incredible number of customised high product options." Many of the key technological components have already been developed, including the necessary engineering and marine design. Costumers would be able to save time on distribution and be free to "build their own personalized Feadship" as a result of this. As a consequence, the mega yacht will be delivered in time for the summer of 2024.

Project 2024 was influenced by plenty of innovative superyacht designs proposed by designers around the industry, according to chief product strategist Farouk Nefzi . “We've seen a lot of stunning futuristic concepts with cutting-edge technologies and fantastical dreams. But the primary issue is what is truly feasible now, and what kind of creativity can be implemented now.” The proposal has been "focused out to the greatest degree of precision," according to Feadship, and is "remarkably separate from just about any luxury yacht prototype model available today."

It was born out of a collaboration between Nauta and the builder on some other Feadship luxury yacht task and according to the company: “Their pleasant friendship encouraged them to imagine how their joint perfect Feadship could look for potential customers wanting to know about how to skip the early technological period of a new build implementation.” Nauta and Feadship spent a few months designing and developing a "unique concept that would incorporate all of their common experience" with Feadship De Voogt Naval Designers.

The 72m Project 2024 is the outcome, a completely Tier III compatible mega yacht with a steel hull and an aluminum upper body. Feadship ’s ceo Jan-Bart Verkuyl stated that the engineering team sought to integrate a variety of market-leading design developments into the concept. Resilience, future creativity and innovation and modern features are just a few of them. “We wanted to have a place where customers could invest extra time with family and friends,” the company says. The outcome is a 70-meter private yacht that incorporates all current construction trends. We know how important it is for people to be allowed to navigate from their yacht, so we have a tickle helipad on the stern, as well as plenty of windows and connections across the outside and inside.”

The main exterior elements contain wide screens, smaller size and "elegant" bulwarks, with a sea view and an inland and outside connection. The 564 square meter of cabin space can be fully customized to the customer's preferences and desires, with 12 guests sleeping in a wide master cabin, VIP cabin, and 8 extra rooms that can be configured as doubles or twins. The master cabin, which is located forward of the main deck, is defined as a "sanctuary of individual privacy and leisure," with pieces of clothing and coated surfaces that produce a "aura of clarity." The suite has his and hers standing cupboards, a lounge, and a personal balcony that results in higher deck's rooftop lobby and outdoor dining hall. A reach helipad has been designated instead of the upper deck, although this may be converted into extra seating if the buyer so wishes.

The above-mentioned sun deck is separated into three main areas. The forward area has a Hot tub that is arranged for tanning, while the center area has a seating area for 12 people that is protected by translucent windbreaker boards. Aft is a bar location. A huge food lift spans both floors, and an escalator will carry visitors around the yacht. Over on the ground floor, the aft section flows into the main saloon, which is separated into a bar and dining area with massive screens and panoramic views of the sea. There's also the luxury of adding flip terraces to the lounge, stretching it over the lake.

The beach club , which is located aft of the bottom section, is a highlight feature. The pool bar is extended by an additional 80 percent thanks to large square side wings. There is also a 3.3-meter pool and plenty of seating in the field. The rooftop bar has tight ties to the deck behind with curving steps – a layout element that allow families to take care on kids playing on the beach club. Verkuyl commented on the beach club idea, saying, "Lots of beach clubs are being built within boats, but we're really watching beach clubs expand and becoming more." It's an attractive room that connects you to the water surrounding you - a spot where you'd like to spend time with loved ones.” Project 2024 has room for 18 team members, along with a designated captain's quarters and eight extra rooms on the bottom section.

Victoria Beckham relaxes on her family yacht while husband David poses for a cute snap with daughter Harper as they enjoy a stunning sunset in France

Victoria Beckham and her husband David have enjoyed some well-earned family time on their luxurious yacht in France.

The couple shared a slew of Instagram snaps with their sons Romeo, 21, and Cruz, 19, and daughter Harper, as they enjoyed a beautiful sunset after a romantic dinner at a vineyard.

One snap showed a fresh-faced Victoria, 50, posing her the boat's deck with a jaw-dropping sunset in full view behind her.

David, 49, then posed for an adorable image cuddling his daughter Harper, 13, while another selfie showed the pair with proud mother Victoria.

It comes after David and Victoria enjoyed a romantic meal together at a stunning Vineyard in France .

The fashion designer looked incredible in a little black dress, while accessorising with a silver bracelet and her dazzling wedding ring.

Meanwhile, the former footballer wore a white T-shirt as he sat at a long table while enjoying a glass of red wine with Victoria in front of the picturesque background.

David shared the loved-up snap to Instagram and wrote: 'We have eaten in many beautiful places but WOW Domaine De Peretti Della Rocca'

Victoria also shared sweet images of their children Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 13, posing on a mega yacht in Sardinia.

It comes after David and Victoria reacted to their Emmy Awards 2024 nominations.

The couple have been nominated in a whopping five categories for the 2023 Netflix documentary BECKHAM.

The series gave an unprecedented look at David's career journey and a glimpse at the start of their romance and marriage.

The four-part series was nominated for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series at the 2024 Emmy ceremony, going up alongside Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV, STAX: Soulsville U.S.A. Telemarketers and The Jinx - Part Two.

It was also nominated for Outstanding Cinematography For A Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Directing For A Documentary/Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Picture Editing and Outstanding Music Composition.

In reaction David told HELLO!: 'It's a real honor for me and the whole creative team for BECKHAM to be recognized by the TV Academy.

'Making this series was such a personal journey, a love letter to football and my family. It has been overwhelming for me and Victoria that we have had such a warm and positive response to the series.

'I'm so grateful to the incredible team led by Fisher Stevens and also to all those people from my life and career who took part and who have played such an important role in my story.'

It comes after the Beckham clan seemed in high spirits as they enjoyed a day at sea earlier this week during a family holiday in Sardinia.

David gathered his family on a mega yacht in Sardinia for daughter Harper's 13th birthday, with his brood making the most of the warm weather and trying out water sports.

The hunk put his ripped figure on display as he went shirtless in a pair of lemon yellow swimming trunks before slipping on a life jacket to hop on a jet ski.

Jumping on behind him was Victoria who held on tightly to her husband as he rode the waves.

The Beckham matriarch sported a black swim skirt with her life jacket and accessorised with a baseball cap as she enjoyed the ride.

Yet it wasn't all fun and games for Victoria, who was sure not to let her gruelling workout regime slip on the holiday.

She was pictured pumping iron on the yacht, getting her reps in on the sundeck while casually clad in a plain black T-shirt and denim shorts.

Yet the day was all about the couple's youngest daughter Harper, who marked officially becoming a teenager.

The family celebrated by putting up pink and silver balloons, with Harper pride of place while she enjoyed breakfast with siblings Romeo, 21, and Cruz, 19.

Harper also headed out on the jet skis on the trip, catching a ride with Cruz.

Sadly, her eldest brother Brooklyn, 25, was seemingly unable to make the trip, staying in Los Angeles with his wife Nicola Peltz, 29.

He did, however, acknowledge his little sister with a sweet Instagram post on her big day, sharing a gallery of snaps captioned: 'Happy 13th birthday to the best little sister in the whole wide world xx we love you so much xxxxxxxxxxxxx ❤️.'

Victoria and David also celebrated the milestone by sharing sweet social media posts.

Fashion designer Victoria called her only daughter her 'best friend' and praised her as a 'beautiful, talented young lady' in her Instagram post.

She shared an array of snaps of her as a baby, some previously unseen, as well as a range of images of her growing up and them posing together as a mother-daughter duo.

Inter Miami CF owner David shared the same montage of his 'beautiful little girl' and gushed that she was 'his world'.

Victoria penned in the caption of her post: 'Happy Birthday to my best friend. You are sweet and kind and your smile warms our hearts every day.

'You really are our everything Harper Seven and we are so proud of the happy, beautiful, talented young lady you are becoming.

'We love you so so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Kisses @DavidBeckham @BrooklynPeltzBeckham @RomeoBeckham @CruzBeckham xxx.'

While David said in his post: 'Happy 13th Birthday to my beautiful little girl. Daddy is so proud of you.

'You have grown up to be a kind, generous & a beautiful young lady with the most amazing heart & the most amazing smile that we all love so so much.

'Always be the beautiful person that you are. Harper Seven your my world. #HarperSeven @victoriabeckham @brooklynpeltzbeckham @romeobeckham @cruzbeckham.'

Clarence Thomas accepted a free yacht trip to Russia and got flown out on a complimentary helicopter ride to Putin's hometown, 2 Democratic senators say

  • Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting undisclosed gifts and trips.
  • They say he accepted gifts such as a yacht trip to Russia and a chopper ride to Vladimir Putin's hometown.
  • The senators want an investigation into potential tax fraud and ties between Thomas and Harlan Crow.

Insider Today

Two Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting a free trip to Russian President Vladimir Putin's hometown.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon filed a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3, asking to open an investigation into the Supreme Court judge.

The letter said there was a "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars."

The letter's appendix , which lists 35 undisclosed gifts, shows a "yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and a "helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg," both listed under the year 2003.

St. Petersburg, Russia, is Putin's birthplace and where he grew up. The president now resides in Moscow.

The appendix list is titled "Likely Undisclosed Gifts and Income from Harlan Crow and Affiliated Companies." Harlan Crow is a real-estate developer and the former chairman and CEO of the Trammell Crow Company.

The senators cited a ProPublica report from May last year detailing Thomas' hushed-up financial ties to Crow.

The report said that apart from the Russia trip, Crow also funded Thomas' grandnephew Mark Martin 's boarding-school fees, which cost "more than $6,000 a month."

In their letter, the senators wrote that other gifts from Crow included "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," as well as "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

In September, Thomas said he'd accepted three trips on a private plane owned by Crow . He didn't mention any other gifts.

Whitehouse and Wyden aren't the only Democrats who've voiced concerns over Thomas' sketchy financial ties.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito on Wednesday.

"Justice Thomas and Alito's repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law," her statement reads.

Representatives for Thomas, Whitehouse, Wyden and Crow didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

A Royal Night Out: Inside the Monaco Red Cross’s 75th-Anniversary Gala

Friday night in Monaco saw one of the principality’s annual charity galas, the Croix-Rouge Monégasque (Red Cross Monaco), roll out—and because it’s Monte Carlo, it was certainly not your average fundraiser.

Let’s start with the venue: the Salle des Etoiles, or the Monte-Carlo Sporting, which, counter to what it might suggest, is not a sports arena but a resplendent concert and entertainment hall built in 1974; its retractable glass windows overlook the Monte Carlo Bay and the mega yachts that are constantly passing through. Then consider the guest list: it was crowned by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, President of the Monaco Red Cross, and H.S.H. Princess Charlène, Vice-President of the Monaco Red Cross.

Lastly, there is the charity itself, which, for all its magnanimity, has glamorous roots. Grace Kelly was president from 1958 until her death. The organization has been under the tutelage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II since 1982.

At around 8:30 PM, droves of guests arrived in black tie. Beyond the aforementioned royal set were attendees who perhaps owned a penthouse in town or visitors partaking in an annual summer pilgrimage to the Côte d'Azur. Then there’s the nostalgic set, influenced by the night’s cinematic promise with To Catch a Theif or James Bond on the mind. Speaking of Bond, in attendance was none other than Shirley Bassey, who famously purred “Diamonds Are Forever” for one of her three of her Bond songs.

By 9:30 PM, a four-course dinner by Thierry Saez Manzanares began—salad, a fish filet, and lamb chops. Just after guests were served dessert, they were treated with something a little more decade—a tombola presented by Tatiana Silva and Taïg Khris, with six lot prizes that were  very  Monte Carlo: a diamond-encrusted Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace, an Audemars Piguet watch, a yacht excursion for you and ten friends. And, lastly, a Kelly Bag–which was very apropos given the handbag’s namesake’s connection to the Red Cross Monaco.

A video montage of the history of the Croix-Rouge Monégasque (now in its 75th year) was projected onto the large screens in the room as guests saw flashes of Grace Kelly and the many other famous attendees of the gala: Maurice Chevalier, Josephine Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., and more. Plus, the event has heavy fashion lore—Karl Lagerfeld (whose hilltop Monaco home still hosts Chanel events to this day) attended the gala several times. In 1952, a Christian Dior fashion show was presented.

For the night’s musical act, another bright point in the event’s star-studded musical legacy: English funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai. But first, a firework display that could be marveled all the better given the retractable ceiling at the Salle des Etoiles had opened up, allowing uninterrupted vistas into the sky, which was also aglow with an orange-hued Buck moon.

Jamiroquai lead vocalist Jay Kay, there in his signature hat, delivered a half-hour-long set (“This was easier when I was younger,” he joked to the crowd), grooving along as he went. Before the rest of the crowd joined, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène inaugurated the dance floor. How’s that for a royal ball?

Orbán's Moscow visit was 'an appeasement mission,' says von der Leyen

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's visit to Moscow was "nothing more than an appeasement mission," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech on Thursday.

"Two weeks ago, a European Union prime minister went to Moscow. This so-called peace mission was nothing but an appeasement mission," von der Leyen told the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

Orbán met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow earlier this month as part of what Orbán called a "peace mission" to find a way to end the war in Ukraine.

"Only two days later, Putin's jets aimed their missiles at a children's hospital and maternity ward in Kiev," von der Leyen said. "That strike was not a mistake. It was a message, a chilling message from the Kremlin to all of us."

"Our answer has to be just as clear: No one wants peace more than the people of Ukraine, a just and lasting peace for a free and independent country."

Orbán's Moscow trip coincided with Hungary taking over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, wherein EU member states take turns to chair discussions among themselves for six months at a time.

The European Union's president, Ursula von der Leyen, was confirmed in the role for another five years Thursday after parliamentarians voted overwhelmingly to re-elect her. The comments, made on Tesla's second-quarter earnings call Tuesday, largely confirms Bloomberg's original report about the delay, including that it was driven by Musk's desire to redesign certain elements of the prototype.

Couple Who Set Sail In Self-Built Eco-Friendly Yacht Found Dead In Lifeboat

The couple had left Halifax Harbour on June 11 aboard their yacht. (File)

A British-Canadian couple, who set sail across the Atlantic Ocean roughly six weeks ago, were found dead in a lifeboat off the coast of Canada. The bodies of Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood were discovered after their raft washed ashore on Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, reported the  NY Post .

The pair had embarked on an ambitious journey across the Atlantic Ocean, sailing from Halifax to the Azores in their self-built, eco-friendly yacht, Theros. The 42-foot vessel, powered solely by electric, wind, and solar energy, was intended to demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable travel. The couple had been posting about the construction of Theros on their YouTube channel, "Theros Adventures," and this voyage was to be their inaugural fully "green" journey.

They left Halifax Harbour on June 11 aboard their yacht bound for the Azores region of Portugal. They were reported missing on June 18 and found three weeks later on July 10.

While initially reported to be from British Columbia, it is believed that Ms Packwood was from the UK and Mr Clibbery was from Canada. Formal identification is still pending.

The cause of death is not yet known. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident.

Their sailboat, Theros, was severely damaged, and investigators suspected that it was struck by a larger vessel.

The area they were sailing in is notoriously known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the large number of shipwrecks that occurred there. The exact circumstances of the incident are still unknown, but investigators are exploring several theories.

One leading theory is that Theros was hit by a bulk carrier, which may have caused significant damage to the sailboat. Investigators have inspected a carrier ship, which was in the same area as Theros at the time of the incident, but they have not released their findings, as per the Saltwire .

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

The crew of the carrier ship reported that they did not notice any damage or collision, the Mirror  reported. Some veteran sailors have suggested the homemade additions to Theros may have contributed to the tragedy, particularly the excessive weight of batteries and solar panels, which may have destabilised the boat.

Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood met by chance in 2015 at a bus stop in London. At the time, Ms Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister, while Mr Clibbery was visiting from Canada. This chance encounter led to them eventually falling in love and getting married on their yacht, Theros, in 2016.

Bernard Arnault has been dubbed the Olympics' godfather. Here's how he built LVMH's fortune

These may be the most luxurious Olympics ever

PARIS — For decades, France’s LVMH has been the face of luxury for the wealthy who tote Louis Vuitton bags, don Christian Dior clothing, spritz Bulgari perfume and sip Veuve Clicquot Champagne .

This week, the world’s dominant luxury group — home to 75 high-end brands across fashion, jewelry, watches and alcohol — will be the face of a global event for the masses: the Paris Olympics, with its billions of viewers around the planet.

With a major sponsorship role aimed at burnishing the image of the Games and the French capital, it’s a new chapter in LVMH’s specialty of selling exclusivity at a grand scale under its chair and CEO, Bernard Arnault.

Assembling and growing dozens of exclusive labels under one powerhouse roof has put Arnault, 75, at the very top of Forbes’ list of the world’s richest people. As recently as June 3, Forbes estimated his wealth at $207 billion, narrowly ahead of Tesla’s Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. With ever-shifting stock-market prices, the three men often trade places (according to Forbes’ real-time billionaires list on Tuesday, Arnault and his family are currently No. 3).

LVMH’s cosmetics brand Sephora sponsored the Olympic torch relay . Berluti designed France’s opening ceremony uniforms. Jeweler Chaumet crafted the Olympic medals. Those will rest in cases designed by Louis Vuitton, whose headquarters at 2 Rue Pont Neuf will be hard to miss as the opening ceremony parade floats by on the Seine River.

“We tried to find a way to do it, to do something else than just signing a check and getting billboards on the side of the streets,” Antoine Arnault — LVMH’s head of environment and image and Arnault’s eldest son — told The Associated Press on Monday.

The extent of LVMH’s involvement is “unprecedented for a luxury brand,” says Luca Solca, luxury goods analyst at research firm Bernstein. Where such brands used to focus on athletic pursuits more associated with the rich — tennis, equestrian sports and yacht racing — LVMH and its competitors have increasingly used mass sports to reach customers and place a halo of excellence around their products.

“The prize is a high-level association to sports as a universal language that all consumers understand,” Solca says.

While his brands will be front and center, Arnault’s low-key public profile is a sharp contrast with those of Musk and Bezos. Although his company is adept at digital marketing, he’s not on social media himself. He can almost blend into the crowd, sitting quietly in his somber suits in the front row at fashion shows. Unsurprisingly, though, he’s well connected: He received the Légion d’Honneur in March from President Emmanuel Macron, whose wife, Brigitte, taught French to two of Arnault’s sons.

“He is almost like a head of state; he has that level of influence,” says political image consultant Frank Tapiro, dubbing Arnault the “godfather of the Olympics.” Tapiro, who worked with Arnault as creative director for the launch of the Miss Dior perfume, likened him to Louis XIV, the 18th century Sun King famed for wielding incredible power over his capital from afar.

An engineer who started out at his family’s construction firm, Arnault launched his career in luxury by taking over Financière Agache in 1984. He dumped his acquisition’s less attractive businesses, keeping only the crown jewels: Christian Dior and ritzy department store Le Bon Marché. Within five years, he had taken a stake in LVMH and become CEO of the company, born from the merger of Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton — brands established centuries before.

Arnault made his fortune by defying conventional wisdom, building a conglomerate in a field where rarity and exclusivity are watchwords. The company’s sheer size has created what Solca calls the “mega-brand virtuous cycle”: Its size and large profits let LVMH recruit top design talent, open bigger and flashier stores in elite locations, and support its brands with marketing and advertising spending that each brand could never attain on its own. That boosts profits further and the cycle repeats.

LVMH today is three times the size it was in 2009. Last year, it reported 86.2 billion euros ($93.2 billion) in revenue and 22.8 billion euros ($24.6 billion) in profit from recurring operations, for a more than 26.5% profit margin — one that businesses in sectors such as automobiles, airlines or food retail can only dream of. It’s a public company, but family-run. Arnault’s five children each play roles, leading to media speculation about who will succeed him at the top; however, his move to extend the retirement age for his job from 75 to 80 indicates he could be around for a while yet.

Arnault’s forte is balancing heritage with innovation to keep venerable brands from stagnating and giving top designers the freedom to update the classics. Louis Vuitton boosted its aura of exclusivity by multiplying handbag styles through limited editions, with partners like artist Jeff Koons, allowing buyers to feel they have something different from the pack — an approach Solca termed a “multi-pronged innovation engine” that keeps quantities limited and prices high.

“Mastering the paradox of star brands is very difficult and rare,” Arnault once told the Harvard Business Review, adding, “fortunately.”

“Our whole business is based on giving our artists and designers complete freedom to invent without limits,” he said. “If you look over a creative person’s shoulder, he will stop doing great work.”

In the topsy-turvy world of luxury sales, raising prices can actually increase demand — to say nothing of profits — by underlining the desirability of, say, a Louis Vuitton handbag that can cost $3,000 or more. The growing number of extremely wealth people who can afford luxury goods, and the company’s early move into China as it developed into a major luxury market, have buoyed his fortune, too.

Given the company’s emphasis on its French heritage, the Paris sponsorship is “quite congruent with LVMH’s image,” says Qing Wang, professor of marketing and innovation at the University of Warwick’s business school. “With the Olympics in Paris, it’s an opportunity to highlight that connection.”

The modern Olympics were invented, after all, by a French nobleman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and French remains one of the Games’ official languages.

“We do feel a responsibility because our brands are very notoriously French. We are French,” Antoine Arnault told the AP. “My father is very deeply French and loves his country. So, we feel a responsibility to, yes, to do things the right way.”

The company’s 150 million-euro ($162 million) financial contribution, a figure reported by news media and analysts but not confirmed by the organizing committee or the company, would place LVMH at or near the top of the Games’ largest sponsors list. The sponsorship helps the organizing committee reach its stated goal of a privately funded Games that avoid the cost overruns of earlier Olympics. (The Games’ 4.38 billion-euro budget is 96% covered by private revenues, including from sponsors, ticket sales and television revenue. The 4% share that is public funding goes toward the Paralympic Games that follow.)

There are risks to LVMH’s image investment — if, for instance, the Games are marred by protests in France’s unsettled political climate. “The French are considered world leaders in protesting,” notes Solca. And it’s an undeniable fact that, as Solca puts it, “luxury thrives on income inequality” — while Macron has touted the Games as wide open, critics have seized on the unattainability of access to many events and the luxury brands intertwined.

One thing is fairly certain: Paris won’t see a sudden upsurge in luxury shopping during the Olympics themselves.

The crowds may discourage rich travelers from coming to spend, and street closures will hinder access to stores — including Avenue Montaigne, where LVMH’s flagship store stands.

McHugh reported from Frankfurt, Germany.

Moscow jails Russian-American journalist for over six years

MOSCOW — A Russian court has sentenced Alsu Kurmasheva , a Russian-American journalist for U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) , to six-and-a-half years in prison for spreading false information about the Russian army , the court revealed on Monday.

A spokesperson for the court in the southern city of Kazan said Kurmasheva had been sentenced on Friday following two days of court proceedings. Her lawyer did not immediately reply to a Reuters question about whether she would appeal and the U.S. embassy did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Friday was also the day a separate court in Yekaterinburg sentenced another U.S. citizen, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich , to 16 years in prison for espionage , following a three-day trial held behind closed doors. His newspaper and the United States have called the trial a sham, and Washington says it is working to secure his release.

RFE/RL President and CEO Stephen Capus called Kurmasheva’s trial and conviction “a mockery of justice”.

“The only just outcome is for Alsu to be immediately released from prison by her Russian captors,” Capus said in a statement. “It’s beyond time for this American citizen, our dear colleague, to be reunited with her loving family.”

Kurmasheva, 47, is based in Prague and has been held since Oct. 18 when she was arrested while visiting family in her native Russian region of Tatarstan. She had first been detained briefly earlier last year while trying to leave Russia, and her passports were confiscated.

A court initially found her guilty of failing to declare that she had a U.S. passport, mandatory under Russian law, and fined her. A week later, she was charged with failing to register as a “foreign agent”, to which she pleaded not guilty.

Her husband, Pavel Butorin, who also works for RFE/RL, wrote on X: “My daughters and I know Alsu has done nothing wrong. And the world knows it too. We need her home.”

Butorin has said her arrest was related to a book that she had edited entitled “Saying No to War. 40 Stories of Russians Who Oppose the Russian Invasion of Ukraine”.

Gershkovich and Kurmasheva are among at least a half dozen Americans convicted and jailed in Russia amid the biggest breakdown of relations between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.

RFE/RL, which has broadcast news about eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union since the Cold War, is funded by the U.S. Congress.

Russia has designated it as a “foreign agent” and an “undesirable” organization, classifications that carry negative Cold War overtones and effectively ban it inside Russia.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has imposed long prison sentences on people convicted of criticizing the war, under a law that bans spreading false information about the military.

Butorin has petitioned for the U.S. government to designate Kurmasheva as wrongfully detained, as Washington views the case of Gershkovich, to open up further diplomatic avenues to negotiate her release.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller declined to comment on the department’s deliberations on whether to call Kurmasheva wrongfully detained, but said Washington had called for her release.

Repeating that call, Miller told reporters, “She’s a dedicated journalist who is being targeted by Russian authorities for her uncompromising commitment to speaking the truth and her principled reporting.”

PARIS (AP) — For decades, France’s LVMH has been the face of luxury for the wealthy who tote Louis Vuitton bags, don Christian Dior clothing, spritz Bulgari perfume and sip Veuve Clicquot Champagne .

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
