As a result, Seiko has become a sought-out brand for watch modification aficionados with a motley of movements and mod parts that are easily available out in the open market. Watch modding - horological counterculture?

With the wide availability of mod parts, watch parts, and their numerous variant styles, one can definitely and almost limitlessly exercise their right to express themselves through the modern art of watch modification. 

Those who became part of the community have various reasons to enjoy customization. Some want to focus on tinkering with watch parts; some are curious about how things work. Finally, some want to achieve a specific look different from the original timepiece from the stores because they find the typical store items to be dull.

Now, don't worry if you're just starting to dip your toe in the watch modding scene. You're not the only one. Setting out to design your watch from scratch can be challenging. Every brilliant and skillful watch modder started as a newbie. And there's no shame in starting with little to no knowledge of watch modding - as long as you start somewhere.

Lots of horology enthusiasts turn to Seiko for watch modification purposes because of the brand's relative price-friendliness and the extensive accessibility of mod parts for Seiko watches. Ready-made Seiko mod parts and watch parts are always ready for purchase in stores, whether physically or online. Additionally, one can get ready-made Seiko mod parts from reputable businesses online, like a ceramic bezel. Now, deciding on what kind of watch you want to mod is essential to doing a decent watch modification. So you can go ahead and pick a commonly modded watch type from Seiko. One of the go-to watch types for watch modding is the discontinued but still affordably available Seiko SKX007, a divers' watch.

A timepiece for MODern consumers

The Seiko SKX007 is legendary. As mentioned earlier, this particular timepiece by Seiko is affordable, yes, but also timeless. Its classic looks have inspired many in the watch modification community to produce mod parts dedicated to it. It has a history as an ever-reliable watch that could accompany you to dive as deep in the oceanic depths as much as you can or need. That storied reputation made it clear for horology enthusiasts with little or no modding experience that it was the choice watch for personalization and modification. Why? Because it was durable. It could stand to get modded.

Although Seiko discontinued the SKX007, it has become a collector's item. In addition, a slew of imitative SKXs is out in the market. Some of the imitations are downright worthless, but some of the higher-quality replicas can be very convincing and might fool a would-be buyer into spending more than they ought to. The SKX007 was never meant to be a premium or luxury watch. Instead, it utilized an inexpensive movement paired with utilitarian parts, making imitation SKXs easy for replica manufacturers to create.

However, it might be better to build a Seiko SKX007 from the depths up, so to speak. The SKX007 was a great budget diver's watch at its best. It never tried to compete with other watches in terms of make and materials, and it was a reliable go-to watch for anyone that needed a quality watch that could work for years without any issues or need for service.

But for the more advanced and aggressive watch modder or horology enthusiast, rebuilding one could be the best way to express oneself with a one-of-a-kind timepiece. Especially since the problem with getting a limited SKX piece today is that it can be too expensive. However, if you were to buy it as a watch collector's item, that could still work. However, be sure to keep it in a safe place or compartment, and do not wear it too often outside of your home - if that's what you want out of your SKX. 

For anyone that wants an SKX-style watch made to be used, it makes a lot more sense to build one. It could be more labor-intensive, but it is less pricey that way. After all, it would be a labor of love for any lover of watches and timepieces.

The Seiko Yachtmaster

A less daunting way of approaching a watch mod job for beginners is to turn to aspirational builds inspired by well-known watch designs or timepiece designs. Introducing the Seiko Yachtmaster modification build - a watch mod style that will surely never fail to steal the attention of anyone in the same room you are in. So let's dive right in! In watch modding, you can recreate the style of a more exorbitantly-priced timepiece for cheaper. And with vastly more creative freedom.

The Seiko Yachtmaster (YM) mod build is one of the most popular and well-loved builds in the watch modding community. One of the easiest ways to distinguish this build or style is through its bezel insert. There are several variant colors of Seiko SKX007 Yachtmaster bezel inserts, including silver, gold, and black, just to name a few. As a result, this build is generally bigger and showier than similar-looking builds like the Submariner.

Some Seiko Yachtmaster build choices that are available for you out in the watch modification world are:

• The black Yachtmaster build  - one of the most popular builds because of its effortlessly cool appeal, and of course, black can go well with anything.

It’s fair to say that watch wearing has become more than just a marker of status. People refuse to be labeled by what they wear; instead, they alter parts of the timepiece to suit their personality and lifestyle.

In our years of selling Seiko mod parts , modifying our own watches, and interacting with the community, we've come to understand that every brilliant and skillful watch modder started as a newbie. And there's no shame in that!

One less intimidating way of approaching a watch mod is to take inspiration from well-known builds. For this purpose, we spent some time deconstructing and contextualizing popular watch mods in this new series of articles, which we're coining "Behind the Build". 

First off, we’ll be starting with the Seiko Yachtmaster Mod -- a style that never fails to grab someone’s attention.

Let's dive (wink wink) right in.

The Seiko Yachtmaster

The Seiko Yachtmaster (YM) Mod is one of the most popular and well-loved style of builds by watch modders. The easiest way to distinguish this style is from the use of a Yachtmaster bezel insert. There are various color versions of Seiko SKX007 Yachtmaster bezel inserts which includes silver, gold, and black, just to name a few.

The bold, yet still somehow elegant, bezel insert style can be traced back to 1992 when the Rolex Yacht Master had its maiden voyage in the market. It received an overwhelming reception as it was a timepiece that just oozed opulence - The market had never before seen a luxury watch, designed for luxury seacraft owners. Additionally, the Yacht Master broke Rolex’s tradition of rarely launching watch variations as they decided to offer it in 29mm, 35mm, and 40mm sizes.

Who would have guessed that years  later, the Yacht Master would inspire watch modders and builders to emulate it, using the classic Seiko SKX007 as a platform? The SKX, the watch for the everyman, is everything that the Yachtmaster isn't - and yet the pairing of the two diametrically opposed styles seems so natural when you look at a well-executed Yachtmaster build.

Gold Yachtmaster

The full gold Yachtmaster style build is definitely not an easy one to pull off - you have to possess a certain type of personality to wear a full gold watch, and not allow it wear you instead. That being said - when done right, it looks absolutely bling-tastic.

Silver Yachtmaster

Don't think the full gold look is up your alley? A Silver Yachtmaster build might be what you're looking for. Paired with the right  watch dial , it's the classy and understated choice.

Black Yachtmaster

Black Yachtmaster builds are by and large one of the most popular ways to execute this style. It's no surprise that our Black YM Style bezel insert is our bestselling bezel insert, of all time!

They're low-key, stealthy, and just look so damn cool. Some Black Yachtmaster style builds use a black watch case, as shown in the above image. Others prefer to use a silver watch case, which adds a nice bit of contrast. See below for an example.

Two-Tone Yachtmaster

Two-tone builds are usually identified by their use of two different tones of metal, with gold being one of the accent tones. Popular combinations are black and gold, or silver and gold. A great two-tone build is all about balance, and when executed well, they're one of the most gorgeous watches out there.

This style has its fair share of fans, evident by the many incredible photos circulating on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and various websites. But some are still on the fence because not all modders, and would-be modders, successfully find compatible parts needed for their first SKX Yachtmaster build. Another issue is - there are so many different parts, where does one even start?

Beginners may also encounter doubts, and feel discouraged about whether they can make the mod work. These are common, and very normal, issues that are typically faced even by experienced modders.

It really takes time and repetition to transition from clumsy hands into being able to pull off precise movements and apply just the right pressure to achieve the first build.

We admit though, that the process is a bit technical. And handling delicate bits of a watch to build an SKX007 Yachtmaster mod, or any other style of watch build, requires patience and some level of dedication.

Gorgeous watch. Great 8L35 mechanism. Great price. Superb customer service. Marc shipped the watch really fast. The USPS delivered it quick (even though it took place during the Holidays' high season). Overall, it was a great addition to my Prospex collection. Watch arrived in perfect conditions. I'm totally happy with the watch & the service provided by Long Island Watch. It's really amazing. The only thing that I noticed different, is that the pics on this site and the Seiko USA site, show the 2nd & 3rd upper bracelet links all solid with no drilled holes. Mine came in virtually with the same bracelet. But all the links were drilled for the pin & collar system. If anyone knows the reason why, I'll truly appreciate an explanation, in order to illuminate me. I apologize for my ignorance, regarding the difference on the bracelet links. Shalom & blessings to everyone.

I wanted to buy this watch from a domestic (USA) authorized Seiko dealer. Island Watch satisfied this requirement and provided a very competitive price and excellent service. The watch is well-made and highly accurate. Despite its advertised large size, the watch wears well even on small to medium wrists. It is also a thick watch, and the bracelet is heavy and not as refined as its Swiss diving watch counterparts. All things considered - this is a classic diving watch that belongs in every collection of high end divers.

History of Seiko and Marine Master Family Watch Review

Introduction: seiko in history.

For professionals, weekend adventurers, and everything in between, Seiko has a long history of creating the ideal dive watch. In this three-part series, we'll take a look at the history of three different groups of dive watches under the Seiko umbrella - watches so iconic and cherished by watch enthusiasts that many have their own unofficial nicknames - and trace their evolution down to this time. modern, advanced technology, Prospex iteration.

Japan has always been hard at work with diving watches. They've definitely released a number of them, and the models range from Swiss watch tributes, to avant garde designs with limited appeal. The Citizen Aqualand series has always been very functional. On the other hand Seiko has released a number of dive watches, some with names like Samurai and Monster. Again, some are good, some may not suit my taste, but I believe each one is reliable. The Japanese are always playing around with the various movements in dive watches (all their watches for that matter). I've seen at least six different styles of movements on Japanese dive watches (quartz, Eco-Drive, Kinetic, Kinetic Direct Drive, Spring Drive, and Auto). The last four movements are at least somewhat mechanical. However, Japan is the only country besides Germany and Switzerland that can design and manufacture mechanical movements of reliable quality on any mass scale.

Previously, we looked at the Turtle diver family, a highly functional watch made for everyday use, ideal for recreational divers and watch lovers who need a watch that is sturdy and durable. Today, we take a look at the Marinemaster lineup, and Seiko's history of superior diving watches designed for professionals who risk their lives in the deep sea every day.

The 1960s were the golden age for functional watches. Long before watches became collectibles valued for their rarity, they were purpose-driven instruments intended to perform a specific job. In the 60's, a new job that required special tools and brave workers was professional diving. The planet's oceans, which hold large reserves of untapped natural resources, became fertile ground for exploration in the years following World War II, with technology finally being able to (somewhat) safely keep divers submerged for increasingly longer periods of time. For these professional divers, a reliable timekeeping instrument is essential, as untimely decompression stops can easily lead to bends, or worse. Constant dive time monitoring is an obvious necessity to stay alive underwater, and Seiko has served divers from the start with a distinct line of watches designed for the most serious of professionals, consistently focused on combining the most innovative designs and cutting edge horology technologies.

In 1967, Seiko introduced its first professional diving watch, the 6215-7000. While Seiko has made watches meant for diving before, the 6215-7000 is something entirely different. This watch is not intended for enthusiasts of casual recreational diving, but for divers who make their living by diving perilous. While early Seiko dive watches had a water resistance rating of 150 meters, the 6215-7000 was able to withstand depths of up to 300 meters. It achieves this (at the time of eye-popping) partial water resistance through the unique monocoque, or one piece, casing construction, keeping the possible entry points of water to a minimum. The 6215-7000 is also the first Seiko dive watch to have a crown at 4 o'clock, which has remained a Seiko diver trademark to this day, and offers a strong aesthetic link between early skilled diver watches and today's highly sophisticated Prospex divers.

The 6215-7000 was only in production for a year before being replaced by the 6159-7001. It is one of Seiko's most collectible dive watches. The new version is nearly identical in appearance and construction to the 6215-7000, but features high-frequency motion operating at 36,000 bph. The high-beat moves have become something special to Seiko, offering better speed precision and stability over time compared to movements that run at more traditional frequencies. Typically, movements are more difficult to manufacture and properly tune than standard movements, but over the decades, Seiko has been a leader in the manufacture and proper adjustment of high-frequency movements. The 1968 introduction of 6159-7001 was a real milestone in the making clock, and it is considered the world's first high knock diving watch.

The Marinemaster Watch

So in the picture Seiko Marinemaster is one of Seiko's finest automatic movement. The 8L35 is automatic with 26 Gems and a 50 hour power reserve. The accuracy easily matches the level of a certified chronometer, and often exceeds that level. The chronometer, for example, is accurate in 6 seconds per day on average, while the Seiko 8L35 is accurate in 10-15 seconds per month. Pretty good for mechanical automatic movement.

This watch is different from the other Seiko Prospex Marinemaster watches I have talked about. It has Kinetic Direct Drive or Spring Drive movements rather than automatic movements. For example, I'm talking about the look-alike Seiko SBDD001, which has a similar name, but different looks and movements. The Seiko SBDX023 is an excellent offering from Seiko for a number of reasons.

This early professional dive watch laid the groundwork for what the public expected from the leading and distinguished divers of Seiko. The SBDX023 Marinemaster 300 is the logical next step in the Seiko professional diver chain, providing the clearest link to the modern watch on the Prospex line today. While the SBDX023 is produced exclusively for the Japanese market, many are imported to the United States and elsewhere, offering clear value over the much more expensive Swiss competitors. The construction, still monocoque, is extraordinary, and by the time this watch appears in the early 21st century, the basic physics behind the case design has been proven for a generation, and has been further refined along with Seiko's manufacturing capabilities. and techniques grow and become more advanced. The SBDX023 is not only an essential tool for divers, but represents the pinnacle of engineering for Seiko obsessives around the world.

Constant monitoring of dive times is an obvious necessity to stay alive underwater, and Seiko has served divers since its inception. consistently focuses on combining the most innovative designs and cutting edge horology technologies.

Seiko Marine Master's Appearance

The Marinemaster has a similar shape to previous professional dive watches, but the overall quality of the finish is sharper than the true vintage model, thanks to production beginning in the SBDX023 in 2000. Viewing the case in profile or from an angle reveals a smooth but well-executed transition between a polished and brushed surface, with its ultra-thin bevels and flowing, graceful outline of the casing. The engine that powers the Marinemaster is the 8L35 caliber.

With a revived interest in vintage watches, the Prospex line has produced a collection of ultramodern divers that take several design cues from the Marinemaster, 6159, and 6215 from Seiko's back catalog while offering only the best in current watchmaking technology.

The Seiko SBDX023 is the only Marinemaster watch that actually reads "Marinemaster" on the watch. Seiko has never been known for naming their watches artfully, so be aware that this watch is Seiko, in the Prospex lineup, which is Marinemaster, and is the model number SBDX023. Know that you can find it at the Gnomon shop. In fact, you don't have to go to Japan to get them, they are available online with free shipping.

What I really like about this watch is its compact design and good features. To me, this is what a classic Japanese mechanical dive watch looks like. Seiko was finally able to take everything people love about a Japanese-style dive watch and put it together into one watch that truly characterizes its theme. You don't buy a Japanese knockoff Swiss watch, you get something that is purely Japanese refinement from the dial and hands display to the philosophy in the movement (which has a very fine second hand unlike the cheaper automatic movements). Seiko's watches have always preferred functionality over form, but styles have evolved over time. One of these elements is the 4-crown clock position, as well as the large numeric index and meaningless bezel. On the inside, you'll see a slanted chapter circle with a minute increment mark that makes the watch easy to read, and just happens to add a nice 3-D display to the watch. Furthermore, the rich luminant on the face and hands is a bright plus as seen in the video above.

One of Seiko's main strengths is recognizing when and how to reintroduce classic designs to the market. With SLA025, the limited edition released in 2018 of only 1,500 pieces, the brand is paying tribute to the legendary 6159-7001. The watch's full name, 1968 Auto Diver Remake Limited Edition, shows the essence of what the SLA025 is and what Seiko is capable of digging through the archives. This timepiece lives up to the original in all the important details, from the distinctive hands set to the 4 o'clock crown to the classic case shape. The SLA025 is equipped with Seiko's Hi-Beat 8L55 movement, a logical choice given the importance of the 6159-7001's ability to carry high-frequency caliber to the depths of the world's oceans. At the 2018 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, SLA025 was also awarded the prestigious Sports Watch Prize.

If you miss SLA025, or miss the great example of old Seiko diver but can't part with the five numbers that are often needed to get the best of work, the Prospex SBDC061 is a must-have. Based on the 6159 design, the SBDC061 is an excellent modern interpretation of the classics. While the dial details, the dials of the 4 dials, and the outline of the case all clearly reminds us of the 6159, the SBDC061 is a modern watch in vintage clothing - the bezels look very shiny, offering a distinct flair from the cooler examples of vintage models, and the case is made in a traditional three-piece design, accessible from the back, unlike the monocoque cases of the past. The end result is a sleek and modern remodeling of the watch that is an important part of Seiko's history, and although it has benefited from the ornamentation of modern manufacturing techniques, it has not lost its original charm.

While the SBDC061 is a tribute watch that has its own set of settings in a professional diving setting, the SLA021 can be considered the uncompromising modern heir to all that Marinemaster represents. Although the dial does not say "Marinemaster", the cultural heritage here cannot be denied. The SBDX023 is very similar, but with the modern Prospex features that set it apart. The bezel insert, traditionally made of scratchable aluminum, is now ceramic, while the finish of the case makes use of Seiko's finest Zaratsu polishing techniques, giving this technically sophisticated timepiece a mirror-like luster and an unusual level of smoothness.

Since the advent of professional diving, Seiko has been at the forefront of creating the timepiece divers need to do their job safely.

At the top of Seiko's range of professional divers is the GPHG award-winning Prospex LX SNR029. Although, on the surface, this could easily be mistaken for SLA021, this is a completely different animal. The power reserve on the dial provides no small secret - it's powered by the Spring Drive caliber. Since the advent of quartz, Seiko's most significant watchmaking achievement has been Spring Drive. Combining a mechanical gear train with electronic timing, Spring Drive is more than just a "best of both worlds" option; it is a distinct step forward in watchmaking technology, and as used in professional dive watches represents a new standard not only in timekeeping, but also in safety. With an accuracy of +/- 1 second per day (+/- 15 seconds per month), the reliability and precision of Spring Drive technology will give professional divers confidence as they get down to complete the dangerous work they are doing.

The SNR029 also differs from other watches in this area of ​​the Prospex range in the material of the case. Crafted from titanium, the SNR029 is significantly lighter on the wrist compared to steel, making it a versatile and ergonomic choice. Although the SNR029 is not a small watch, the lightweight materials used make it wearable for almost anyone, either far below sea level or above. The natural gray hue of the titanium gives the watch an instrument-like appearance, but the finish is still Seiko's signature, one might say, without compromise. It's impressive that the craftsmen behind the finishing of the Seiko case were able to make this very industrial material look gorgeous.

Since the advent of professional diving, Seiko has been at the forefront of creating the timepiece divers need to do their job safely. From the high frequency divers of the early '60s, to the Marinemaster, to the modern Prospex range of professional divers, Seiko leaves nothing on the tech table to bring their customers the most useful instruments to excel at their job.

Prices and Perks

The Seiko Marinemaster SNR029 costs around $5,480.00 USD retail and is a good value considering all the high points. The price for Marine Master SBDC061 is  $820.00 USD. While for the Marine Master SBDX023  costs  $2,790.00 USD.  

Watches are not perfect, because there are only a few watches. Although it allows me to clear up a few things. This watch has a water resistance of 300m. Some may be wondering why not go deeper into the money. Well, unless you like seeing big numbers written on a watch, consider how often if your body wouldn't just dive that deep, and survive. So 300m will satisfy whatever you need. The watch is heavy too. To be sturdy and reliable, Marinemaster is basically a lump of solid steel. It's over 200 grams and the size is about 44mm. If you want to reduce weight, you can wear the rubber strap that comes with the metal bracelet. Furthermore, you can wear the watch for a few days until your weak wrist adapts. Seriously, that's all it takes to adjust to a heavier watch.

Lastly, the only real complaint that can be justified is the bracelet. Let me start by saying that this Seiko Marinemaster bracelet is super cool. It features a ratcheting system for easy installation and adjustment, which I really like. The thing is, Japanese wristbands have never matched the refinement and quality of their European competitors. They are not very liquid or feel solid. It's not about comfort, but expecting a Swiss watch over $ 5,000 usually has a very impressive bracelet. One day, the Japanese will be looking for a way to match Swiss and German bracelets, and at a lower cost. But until then, you should know that Europeans have a Japanese punch on that end.

The Seiko Prospex Marinemaster is a great addition to any collection, especially those who love Japanese or dive watches. It is one of those perfect everyday watches that will dutifully see its owner through any occasion. One thing this watch communicates to me through its European cousin is "my rough." In a good way. A good Japanese watch always seems ready for duty and able to take whatever you can throw at it, while Swiss watches make me want to shield them from the elements and harm to preserve their appearance. This is one of the reasons high-end Japanese watches like this call me, and why it should call you too.

All you need to know about the Seiko Marinemaster watch collection

Seiko’s aquatically-inspired Marinemaster watch collection represents expert dive watch technology and craftsmanship. Uniquely, the nicknames of many models belonging to this collection have been adopted by their collectors as opposed to Seiko itself.

Rookie collectors may not be aware of many dive watches belonging to this collection, since the series is submersed behind murky waters, often creating some confusion with regards to which dive tools belong to it and which do not. This guide to the Marinemaster series and some of its most important models should make the identification process easier for those who have always wondered. First, let’s start with a quick history lesson on Seiko’s dive watch legacy.

“…affordably priced but professionally adequate”

Seiko’s dive watch heritage began during the 1960s at a time when deep-sea divers needed an affordably priced but professionally adequate tool for underwater exploration. Seiko responded to this need, occupying a gap in the market for a dive watch that promised the know-how of an experienced manufacturer but an assessable price tag also. The Japanese brand’s first dive watch was made in 1965, yet it was the model that followed two years later that really made people sit up and take note. The Seiko 6215-7000 could withstand underwater depths of 300 meters thanks to a robust monocoque case that kept possible water ingress to a minimum. It featured a uniquely positioned crown at 4 o’clock and although not intended as a recreational dive watch, certainly exhibited aesthetical links to the popular and highly advanced Prospex watches that are collected by dive watch enthusiasts today. Next came the Seiko 6159-7001 equipped with a high-frequency movement, promising unparalleled accuracy and stability. Later came the Seiko SBDX001 Marinemaster 300 – another high frequency-powered model that laid the groundwork for many Seiko dive watches to come and officially marked the start of the Marinemaster’s story.

How did the Marinemaster watch evolve?

The Marinemaster collection is full of misconceptions and common misunderstandings but there is a fool-proof guide to some models that are either explicitly named Marinemaster or at least belong to an unofficial Marinemaster list. For a start, most Seiko Prospex watches are considered Marinemaster watches, especially those that promise 200-meter water resistance or more – a reference that can be cited on the caseback or on the tag in store. To make things clearer, we’ve outlined some models that belong to the Marinemaster watch collection, despite not always stating so in their title or on their dial.

Seiko SBCN005 Transocean & SBDX001

Contrary to belief, the Seiko SBDX001 was not the first Seiko Marinemaster watch. It was actually the SBCN005 Transocean model released in the 1990s. Its unique case was crafted from lightweight titanium and paired with a sapphire crystal glass front treated with anti-reflective technology. The Seiko SBN005 offered a barometer scale for reading atmospheric pressure, alongside a second time zone (24-hour scale) in a sub-counter at 9 o’clock and striking shots of yellow colour injected across a marine-inspired blue dial. The SBDX001 was released in 2000 and featured a mix of brushed and polished surfaces that gave the case of the tool watch considerable depth and definition. Powering inside the case was the 8L35 calibre, which propelled a set of chunky luminous hands around a sleek black dial marked with baton indexes and a date at 3 o’clock.

SBCN005 Transocean

Seiko Prospex SBDX003 & SBDX005

The Seiko Prospex SBDX003 and SBDX005 models marked the next transition of the Marinemaster series and were both launched together under the Seiko Year 2000 Historical Collection. Probably considered true collectors’ items, the SBDX003 and SBDX005 models are limited editions (exclusive to 500 and 1000 pieces respectively). The former features gold indexes on its black dial. Both itself and the SBDX005 omitted the “Marinemaster” reference on the dial, setting themselves apart from the former SBDX001. Although the absence of this feature may cause some collectors to think the models were not part of the Marinemaster collection, their depth rating of 300 meters (for the SBDX003 model) and 600 meters (for the SBDX005 model) suggests otherwise. The SBDX003 can be manually wound or hacked. It features a screw-down crown and presents the time through a Hardlex glass top. The SBDX005 is another hi-beat dive watch. The 6159B calibre performs at 33,600 beats per hour.

Seiko SLA025 & Prospex SPB077

As you may have guessed by now, Seiko’s Marinemaster watches are a faithful reinterpretation of those legacy timepieces launched back in the 60s – the 6159-70001 and 6215-7000. Vintage-inspired dive watches have become part of Seiko’s heritage, with models such as the limited edition SLA025 released in 2018 proving and instant. With only 1500 editions available worldwide, the 300M water-resistant watch became a hugely sought-after timepiece, not just for professional and amateur divers but for true Seiko fans. Its design retook the 4 o’clock position upon its distinct case shape but was powered by the Hi-Beat 8L55 movement. The iconic model won the Sports Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève and now goes by the name 1968 Automatic Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition. The Seiko Prospex SPB077 is the more affordable version of the limited edition dive watch. It boasts the same vintage feel but costs a fraction of the price, albeit with a less superior water-resistance of 200 meters.

Seiko Prospex SLA021

The Seiko Prospex SLA021, although not bearing the “Marinemaster” lettering, is a vital part of the range. It bears a very close resemblance to the SBDX001 but boasts functions and features primed for facing extreme conditions out on the water. In the design, the aluminium material used for the bezel in many of the model’s predecessors has been replaced with highly scratch-resistant ceramic but still comes clad in its distinctive black colour to match the dial. The case of the Seiko SLA021 also showcases Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing techniques exuding a more high-end finish. Its lustrous sheen and polished surface is almost mirror-like and has been used in some of Seiko’s more high-end models to date.

Seiko Prospex LX SNR029

The Seiko Prospex LX SNR029 model launched in 2019 as part of the brand’s Prospex LX collection. Although the discrepancies about whether this model is included in Seiko’s iconic Marinemaster range can be confusing, the watch embodies many key features and design traits of the SLA021. Designer of the SNR029, Ken Okuyama, clearly mentions taking inspiration from the Marinemaster series when developing the dive tool. Its dial features a “Spring Drive” reference, along with a power reserve indicator between and 7 and 8 o’clock to show the remaining life of the Spring Drive Calibre 5R65. The movement features a gear train with an electronic time regulation, enabling it to promise an accuracy of +/-1 second per day. A luminous green glow shows between the triangular hour index at 12 o’clock and the 20-minute marking on the unidirectional rotating titanium bezel, enabling the diver to measure elapsed time underwater effectively. In the same fashion as the SLA021, the Seiko SLA029 features the high-end Zaratsu polishing techniques to the surface of its case.

How much does a Seiko Marinemaster watch cost?

You can pick up a quartz-powered Seiko Marinemaster watch from the pre-owned market in mint condition for as little as 1000 Euros. For a Marinemaster Professional 600m Spring Drive watch you can expect to pay up to around 4,200 Euros. The Seiko SBDX001 mentioned earlier can be purchased on the pre-owned market for around 2,700 Euros if in mint condition, whilst more affordable models like the SBDX017 are easier to come by. For professional dive use, Seiko released the Marinemaster Professional 1,000m Diver’s Hi-Beat Limited Edition SBEX001 with, as its name suggests, a 100-meter water-resistant capability. This model can be purchased on the market for 6,400 Euros. To stop this, the brand followed this up in 2014 with a 3000-meter water-resistant rating. The SBDX013 needed a robust case to fulfil this role underwater and was thus nicknamed the Tuna. Its titanium case with black titanium carbide plating can cost around 3.500 Euros today.

Although having evolved in technical capability using some of Seiko’s most robust materials and the brand’s extensive research and development - the Seiko Marinemaster watch collection has lost nothing in the way of charm, functionality or character. Hopefully, this quick and easy guide to some of the most popular Seiko Marinemaster watches has simplified the key ways to define the collection’s most important and collectable models. Whether looking to purchase some of the very first dive watches that sparked the birth of the Marinemaster series or in search of some of Seiko’s most recent additions – this line of popular dive tools is still recognised for its impressive water-resistant capabilities and high-frequency movements, constituting a mainstay in Seiko’s current catalogue.

If you are looking for a Pepsi model and you don’t like the usual shiny colors, just text them asking specifically to use a matte ceramic bezel, and they will, I had been looking for this for so long!

I’ve selected all the components of my GMT-Master MOD, they were incredibly fast at responding and complied with all my requests, at no additional cost

I’ve noticed on other MODs imprecisions in the brushing and flimsy claps, I can say that I was impressed by this one (Royal Oak Tiffany)

Very well made, doesn’t feel at all like a 200 bucks watch, and a design that I never thought I could wear 😉 the chrono works perfectly, for some reason I thought it wouldn’t! mods are something else

I’m not familiar with this world, but I always wanted a DJ 36, I went for the Arabic dial and it looks stunning

Better than I expected 

I was a bit skeptic regarding the quality considering the price but I have to say it’s even better than more expansive MODs I have bought in the past, especially the bezel, and it comes with the tools to adjust the bracelet as well as a handy travel case

I received an incredible deal from the team after contacting them for the purchase of my 4 MODs (Royal oak blue dial, nautilus tiffany, nautilus green dial with rubber strap, and black sub no date) they’re all amazing and they also upgraded for free my order to 5 days shipping, thanks for everything

If you get the royal oak, add the rubber strap

The steel bracelet is great but for daily wear and to give it a more sporty look the Rubber strap has been just perfect, and I ended up using mostly that

There’s room for improvement

The watch looks solid and well made, nontheless the packaging is not exactly luxurious, a small leather case or something of that sort could make it feel like a true luxrury timepiece, just a reccomandation

Can’t go wrong with a datejust

I’m in love with this watch (Arabic dial DJ) it’s so classy, the dial is spectacular and the quality really surprised me

They shipped my Submariner MOD with the wrong back case, but responded rapidly and shipped the correct one at no additional cost

The 36mm datejust case fits me perfectly and the dial is a work of art, the back case arrived in glass instead of steel, but they told me they’ll ship me the correct one

I thought the 36mm variation would be too small for me but it looks incredible, the sunburst Tiffany dial is a delight to look at

Grat watch, not so great delivery

I have to say I’m a bit disappointed, the watch took one week longer to arrive, first they told me that it will take two days more to assemble since they were having an overload of orders, then the package got stuck in transit and they could only say to reach out to USPS, not satisfied by the post-purchase support

What a watch and customer support

I spoke with them for so long before ordering, I think we went on for 2 or 3 weeks, and they always patiently responded, the dj Arabic mod looks amazing and much better in real life

Everything is perfect, this Submariner MOD looks spot on, and the bezel does not have back play, which is something that was worrying me considering the price

It’s a very solid watch, I like that I can see the movement in the back, and the dial is very beautiful, it’s my first automatic watch so I wasn’t understanding why it wasn’t really working in the beginning but they were very fast and patient in responding and explaining me everything

The screws of the bracelet were a bit tight, nothing too bad but it delayed a bit wearing it, beautiful watch though.

I’ve never been that much into watches but this looked so good I wanted to try, my first automatic watch ever and I can’t take it off

Great watch but the logistics not so much

It got stuck in transit from Germany to Italy, I understand it’s not their fault but the wait was very annoying, the watch looks great though and the quality was surprising, even more considering the price

Beautiful Arabic dial

Dials with Arabic indices are very difficult to find and the wristmodding team was really fast at responding to my requests, 100% recommended

The 36mm fits my small wrist very well, the watch looks classy and the dial is just beautiful

I had never seen this offshore version of the royal oak mod around so I had to try it, my new favorite mod

Got it with the blue “natural rubber strap” I don’t know what that means, but i do know it’s hella comfortable

Perfect size

I thought 38mm was too small for me so I reached out to them and they were really fast at responding and explaining how a square shape fills the wrist differently than a regular round one, and it does, it fits my wrist perfectly. They were also nice enough to offer a free return in case it did not fit me properly, 5 stars!

I own a royal oak amongst other timepieces and I wanted a cheaper version for when I was traveling, I have to admit the quality of the case and dial put next to my AP is surprisingly close, what a watch

I asked them if there was a way to personalize this watch as it was a gift for my brother who’s a watch geek and dreams of having a nautilus, so they came up with this amazing front engraving, incredibly fast at responding and the quality of the watch is surprising, my brother was losing it. The only issue was that the clasp was very rigid so we had to go to the watchmaker to be able to loosen it

The watch looks great but the clasp was a bit rigid and difficult to open, it ended up opening and loosening up after a bit, but I reached out to them and they explained the functioning of the clasp and why it was so tight, but proposed to replace the bracelet anyways with one that has different clasp opening, I ended up keeping this but they told me that if at any point I change my mind they’ll ship the replacement right away.
