Luxury explorer yacht ARCTIC P is an impressive 88-metre vessel, which has received an extensive refit in 2015, which lasted 7 months. The refit was performed at the Navantia Shipyard in Spain, whereas ARCTIC P superyacht was originally built in Germany at Schichau-Unterweser, and launched in 1969. She has also received various refits in the previous years.

It is important to note that in 2014/2015 mega yacht Arctic P has received a complete refit of the bridge, engine control room and the gallery. It has also received an installation of new and significantly more fuel-efficient propellers, as well as a major overhaul of the vessel's beach club.

The beach club includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi and a dining table, all installed in 2015. The pool, jacuzzi and the dining table are convertible into a flush deck so the beach club presents a clean flat teak space, which can be used as a huge entertainment area.

The glass bottom of the pool, and the track bottom of the jacuzzi sink into the deck and the spaces then fill with water. On the other side of the beach club, the dining table rises from the deck into two sections, a smaller round section, to which another piece can be added to create a large oval table. This is very well suited for dining or gatherings and parties. The entire deck conversion takes less than five minutes.

ARCTIC Specifications

The owner pays great attention to safety on board, especially thinking of the safety of children, who are often on board mega yacht Arctic P. There is a removable railing, which separates the jacuzzi and pool area from the rest of the deck space when in use. When the jacuzzi and the pool are in the flush-deck position, the railings can be entirely removed to open up the space.

Accommodation on board Expedition Yacht ARCTIC P is provided to 12 guests and there is a crew of 25 members on board.

A Converted Classic: Explorer M/Y Arctic P

The 88m (287′) M/Y Arctic P began its life in 1969 as an ocean going salvage tug built by Schichau Unterwesser. The ship was later purchased by prominent Australian businessman Kerry Packer and converted into a private super-yacht with the ability to go where few other vessels are capable. With a steel superstructure and hull that includes plating as thick as 50mm in certain spots Arctic P is capable of and has successfully undertaken some of the most far-out expeditions of any modern yacht including setting the world record for furthest voyage south. On its southern expedition Arctic P and crew reached a distance of just 677 miles from the south pole.

Following the successful conversion from ocean-going salvage tug to private super-yacht Arctic P’s interior layout includes accommodations for 12 guests and 25 crew members. With a colossal fuel capacity of 1.4 million liters Arctic P has an incredible reported range of nearly 20,000 nautical miles with a cruising speed of 20 knots with a max speed of 22 knots. As a former ocean-going tug Arctic P draws an impressive 23′ which creates room for such massive tank storage within the hull.

In 2015 the super-yacht underwent an extensive refit at the Navantia Shipyard in Spain that included a completely redesigned beach club and the successful installation of a jacuzzi, swimming pool and dining area. In addition to the luxury amenities the galley, engine room and pilothouse were all renovated as well.

In 2015 Arctic P won the world super-yacht “voyaging” award for its successful record setting southern expedition.

The extensive seven-month 2015 refit of Arctic P has given the 88 metre explorer yacht some luxurious new amenities.

The most significant change is the redesigned beach club, where a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and dining table have been installed to make the area the yacht’s new entertainment hub.

Then at the touch of a button, the glass bottom of the swimming pool and the teak bottom of the Jacuzzi will lower into the deck and the empty spaces will be filled with water. Meanwhile, the dining table on the opposite side of the beach club rises from the deck. The entire transformation takes no more than five minutes.

The refit of Arctic P was carried out at the Navantia Shipyard in Cartagena, Spain, working with project managers MML.

”Working in partnership with Arctic P’s captain and crew over the years has enabled MML to fully understand their specific requirements for each refit or period in maintenance,” says Matt Liddell, MML technical manager.

While in for the refit, Arctic P also had a complete revamp of her bridge and engine control room. The galley of Arctic P was also updated.

Winning a Voyager’s Award during the World Superyacht Awards 2015. Arctic P is the yacht to voyage the furthest south ever.

Inside the Arctic P — Business Tycoon James Packer’s Million Dollar Superyacht

Titled one of the largest superyachts in the world, the Arctic P, owned by billionaire James Packer, is currently making headlines after he offered it to his fiancée Mariah Carey. The business tycoon, who vacationed in Europe all through summer with Mariah, has often been spotted travelling across the globe on this yacht.

Built by German company Schichau Seebeckwerft back in 1970, the Arctic P can cover a maximum distance of 18,000 nautical miles at 20 knots speed. The vessel measures 287 feet and can comfortably accommodate 12 guests, a total of 25 people including crew members. Rumoured to be Packer’s most prized possession, the superyacht was inherited by the business tycoon from his father Kerry Packer.

Refitted in 2014, the superyacht boasts of a new super-steel structure which makes the yacht strong enough to dribble through ice floes in the southern ocean. With white exteriors and an electric blue hull, the superyacht looks visually stunning, and stands out amidst the other white-dyed vessels.

The vessel features a stunning master suite with six separate accommodations spread over two levels on the deck. Designed by renowned interior decorator duo C. Kidston and A. Sassoon, the handcrafted furniture on the superyacht is furbished in rich upholstery. The wooden floors are adorned with fine rugs, while the floor-to-ceiling glass doors offer guests an unparalleled view of the ocean.

While many superyachts own motor boats and sea bikes, the Arctic P is well-equipped to hold a private helicopter as it has a helipad on its deck. 

Apart from stunning suites and the private helipad, the yacht also features an observation tower, amphitheatre, Jacuzzi and swimming pool. In fact, Packer is known to have hosted many celebrity parties on this yacht.

A staggering 99 explorer yachts were ordered or in build as of last year , marking one of the largest single-year increases seen in the past decade. Owners' appetite for adventure is evidently growing – but the perfect explorer is sometimes found further afield, with BOATPro also recording a growing demand for conversion projects. Cue the 87.6-metre Arctic P . Built by Schichau-Unterweser to be "the strongest, toughest salvage rescue vessel in the world" , she was relaunched in 1993 as the largest converted explorer of her time.

During her twenty-year tenure, Arctic P has circumnavigated the globe, picked up a World Superyacht Award and even set a Guinness World Record. BOAT takes a look at the life of this travelling giant... 

1. She's been owned by the Packer family for generations

"[ Arctic P ] was one of the first – possibly the actual first – expedition yacht in the world, and that extraordinary conversion was undertaken by my parents," said Gretel in a BOAT International interview . "So, for me, there is just so much history. Plus, I find her very beautiful." Australian billionaire and media tycoon Kerry Packer AC (Gretel’s father) is to thank for Arctic P 's iconic conversion, an inheritance that has been eagerly accepted by the next generation. When Gretel is on board, she usually goes on trips of several weeks, staying on board for crossings rather than flying to meet the crew at the final destination.

2. She's in the Guinness Book of World Records

In 2013, Arctic P arrived at the Antarctic Peninsula with a purpose. An unexpectedly warm summer had melted the Ross Ice Shelf (also known as the Great Ice Barrier) at its eastern end, providing the crew an opportunity to travel further south than any other vessel in history. The endeavour was a success – Arctic P made it an impressive 677 nautical miles from the South Pole, clinching that all-important entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Bonus fun fact : Arctic P 's team was an absolute powerhouse. Even the yacht's doctor had climbed one of the highest mountains in Antarctica in his early 20s (and also held the world record for the highest base jump).

3. She's had a lot of work done

As of 2022, this heritage explorer has needed four refits to keep her in ship-shape. Works included a stint at Navantia Shipyard in 2015, which saw her leave Spain with a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and dining table that disappears into the deck when not in use. A year-long rebuild at Palumbo Superyachts in 2019 is also worth noting, as she was redesigned to commercially-compliant (and thus charter friendly ) standards.

Arctic is managed by Y.CO with charters starting from €450,000 per week.

4. She has a 4D cinema onboard (among other luxuries)

While Arctic P 's rugged, tugboat exterior was maintained post-conversion, her interiors feel a world away from the harsh climates she cruises. Leisure highlights include a 4D immersive cinema with surround sound and vibrating chairs, a heated beach house pool protected from the elements, a fully-equipped gym, a curated library and an armada of toys including a professional dive centre. The top deck, also known as "Monkey Island", offers 360-degree views with forward-facing seats, low-slung tables for morning coffees and a casual dining area.

5. She was involved in a high-stakes sea rescue

In 1972, Arctic P famously rescued commercial expedition vessel Lindblad Explorer , which had run aground at La Plaza Point, Antarctica. Among the passengers was Swedish explorer Lars-Eric Lindblad himself, the man who led the first tourist expedition to Antarctica in 1966. The explorer was towed by Arctic P to Buenos Aires, Argentina and then to Kristiansand, Norway for repairs. 

Other adventures onboard Arctic P have included a visit to Cape Adare, the largest Adélie penguin rookery in the world and a nighttime excursion to Panama from the Galápagos Islands.
