Sailing superyacht technology has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years - we take a closer look at nine of the most stunning examples...

1. Aquarius

The brief for Aquarius included that she should be, ‘an elegant, muscular sailing yacht with a classic profile for family enjoyment.’ But that barely scratches the surface of the main requirements for this giant ketch. The owners also wanted a yacht that would combine good seakeeping characteristics with performance, reliability and quality.

Essential features included relative simplicity, robustness of systems and a contemporary interpretation of elegant, classic lines, with a clean and uncomplicated appearance. Aquarius ’s graceful lines and timeless shape belie a rugged world cruiser configured to be self-sufficient for extended periods when voyaging well beyond the popular Med and Caribbean circuits. In addition, the yacht is welcoming for family and friends, while providing sufficient performance to compete in superyacht regattas.

2. Pink Gin VI

The Baltic 175 Pink Gin may have captured most of the headlines for her sheer size and cleverly engineered topside balconies, but below decks a collection of Cuban art and some phenomenal styling demand equal attention.

Mark Tucker’s team at Design Unlimited in the UK worked closely with the yacht’s owner, Professor Hans Georg Näder, with whom they had co-operated on his previous Pink Gin , to produce an unusual exercise in interior styling.

The Baltic 142 Canova  may not be using the hydrofoils popularised by the America’s Cup , but her 29ft 6in long (9m) horizontal sliding foil employs the same principle of lift to reduce heel and boost speed. The designers of the Dynamic Stability System (DSS) say it could improve the performance of this super-cruiser by 20 per cent, delivering a sustained 25 knots – not bad for a superyacht that displaces 146 tonnes. This is the first time the DSS has been used in superyachting, but its benefits will be used for comfortable, fast long-distance cruising rather than gaining an edge on the racecourse.

With styling and interior design by Lucio Micheletti as well as the in-house team, Canova  sports a sleek, low deck saloon with a hard, fixed bimini extending over the forward cockpit area. Below, her vast deck saloon, providing panoramic views, forms the focal point of her luxury accommodation.

Unusually, the owner’s suite is located almost amidships, where motion is at its least, with further accommodation for six guests in three cabins. Other features include a Rondal rig with electric in-boom furling, a lifting keel and a propeller leg rotating through 180 degrees.

LOA: 43.3m (142ft 1in) LWL: 41.6m (136ft 6in) Beam: 9.m (29ft 6in) Draft: 3.8-6.5m (12ft 6in-21ft 4in) Displacement: 146.5 tons (328,160lbs) Naval architect: Farr Yacht Design Interior design: Baltic Yachts / Lucio Micheletti Exterior design: Lucio Micheletti Builder: Baltic Launched: 2019

Part of the world’s largest sailing yacht series by length, Seven is hull number 3 in Perini Navi’s 60m ketch series, after Seahawk and Perseus 3 . Launched in 2017, she was feted for her groundbreaking interior lighting design throughout all five guest cabins. A powerful motor-sailer, her twin MTU engines and 47,000-litre fuel capacity mean a globe-trotting range of 3,600nm when motoring at 12 knots.

LOA: 60m (197ft) LWL: 50.4m (165ft 4in) Beam: 11.4m (37ft 4in) Draft: 4.3m-12.3m (14ft 1in – 40ft 4in) Mast height: 62.2m (204ft) Total sail area: 2,097 m2 (22,572ft2) Displacement: 575 tonnes (1,288,000 lbs) Naval architect: Ron Holland / Perini Navi Builder: Perini Navi Launched: 2017

This may be the fourth 100ft yacht designed to the Wallycento box rule, but it’s one that raises the bar with regard to combining form and functionality with outrageously cool aesthetics. Considering that Wally is yachting’s deity of style, that’s saying something.

Tango is at the very forefront of modern fast monohull design and advanced technology. Its stealthy black livery and long, low lines combine with a bold reverse sheerline to create a potent, powerful look. The ruthlessly clean deck is signature Wally. The image of the single helmsman on deck, with all that power and beauty controlled simply by the touch of a network of buttons on the pedestals, has become an icon for the Italian brand.

LOA: 30.48m (100ft) Beam: 7.20m (23ft 7in) Draught: 4.4-6.2m (14ft 5in-20ft 4in) Displacement (light): 47,500kg (104,720lb) Upwind sail area: 640m2 (6,889ft2) Downwind sail area: 1,398m2 (15,048ft2) Naval architecture: Mills Design Exterior design: Wally / Mills Design Interior design: Pininfarina Builder: Persico Marine Launched: 2017

The owner’s brief for Ngoni would be challenging for any size of yacht: “Build me a beast. Don’t build me a sheep in wolf’s clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon; fast and furious.” When the boat in question is a giant 58m (190ft) sloop with a displacement of nearly 400 tonnes this project was always going to push hard against existing boundaries of design, deck hardware and materials technology.

“The owner wanted me to take a fresh look at large yacht design,” Dubois recalled before his untimely death four years ago. “He wanted me to go back to my roots in the late 1970s and ’80s when we were designing race boats, but he also knew we had designed a number of high-performance yachts that were nevertheless seaworthy and comfortable cruisers. So I had to reset my internal computer, if you like, and look hard at how we could save weight and add strength.

“That’s how the reverse sheer came about. I was worried he might not like it. The next time we met in London I showed him the design and he loved it – in fact he gave me a big bear hug!”

LOA: 58.15m 190ft 9in LWL: 51.20m 167ft 12in Beam: 9.54m 31ft 4in Draught: 5.3m-81m (17ft 5in-26ft 7in) Displacement: 353 tons (778,224lb) Upwind sail area: 1,950m2 (20,989ft2) Downwind sail area: 3,093m2 (33,293ft2) Air draught: 75m (247ft) Naval architect: Ed Dubois Interior design: Paul Morgan / Rick Baker Builder: Royal Huisman Launched: 2017

Ahimsa is a 216ft sloop-rigged aluminum yacht, designed by the late Ed Dubois. Built with a combination of innovation and advanced technical craftsmanship, Ahimsa boasts a low superstructure and deck clean. Key features include the ability to hoist her mainsail in less than two minutes and tack the boat within 30 seconds.

The 83m carbonfibre mast is the largest ever produced by Southern Spars and had to be transported to The Netherlands in two pieces. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Ahimsa ‘s Code 1 sail is the world’s largest artwork on canvas, designed by the Norwegian artist Magne Furuholmen.

LOA: 66m (216ft 6in) Mast height: 83m (272ft 4in) Naval architect: Ed Dubois Builder: Vitters Launched: 2012

Svea , the newest addition to the now nine-strong J Class fleet, is one of the most outstanding new yachts of modern times – a harmonious meeting of historic and modern design; a blend of J Class lines and maxi grand prix yacht technology.

All Js dazzle on the water, but Svea simply stops you in your tracks. Her lines and deck are kept spectacularly clean, thanks to the compact wheelhouse, sunken wheel and wonderfully low boom.

Her dark metallic grey hull and black and red sail wardrobe lend her timeless lines a slightly menacing appearance – a purposeful racing look that belies the luxurious interior below decks. The aggressive aesthetics are in keeping with her name, a Viking word (it means Swede).

superyacht-liara-side-view-credit-breed-media

Not only is Liara a masterpiece of style, thanks to UK-based super designers Malcolm McKeon and Adam Lay combining to stunning effect, but she clearly represents a formidable amount of experience. And that all stems from the boss.

This is the fourth Liara for British serial yacht owner Tony Todd, who is now in his seventies. His initial brief was for a safe, comfortable family cruising yacht for circumnavigating the globe , hence the deep and well-protected cockpit. However, Todd has been racing yachts all his life, and once his competitive side kicked in and the odd regatta was mentioned, the speed, weight and deck layout to make this possible became critical features. The result is Liara , the definitive multi-role superyacht.

VIDEO: The Exclusive video debut of 80 meter LEONA

By Editorial Team   1 September 2023

Introducing LEONA, the second hull from the 80m 263 series,  built by the renowned Turkish shipyard Bilgin Yachts, LEONA sets itself apart from her sister ship TATIANA with a number of remarkable features and designs.

Scheduled to appear at the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show , the general arrangement in comparison to TATIANA remains largely unchanged.  Superyacht LEONA focuses on providing larger accommodations and emphasizes spacious room sizes. Her lower deck showcases this concept with an additional storage space in the form of a large owner's dressing room, replacing one of the cabins.

On the main deck, LEONA offers two generous VIP cabins with his and her bathrooms and dressing rooms, replacing the four guest cabins. The owner's deck experiences the most significant change, with the superstructure extended aft to create a palatial owner's suite. A private lounge with access to an exterior pool completes this lavish space.

LEONA's interior exudes opulence and sophistication, incorporating a bold and rich palette. Intricate detailing, decorative finishes, and a variety of textures are seamlessly integrated throughout the yacht. Gloss lacquers, backlit onyx, figurative timbers, gold inlays, and luxurious textiles create a visually stunning ambiance. The interior design was heavily influenced by the owner's love for travel, rich materials, and desire for exciting features, resulting in unique and captivating spaces that enhance the onboard experience.

The main stair lobby, spanning over three decks, features a striking bubble tank with RGB lighting and pulsing water jets, set against a backdrop of black marble with gold detailing. The main salon captivates with an imposing tiger onyx fireplace that divides the space between the formal dining area and spacious lounge. Inspired by African animal prints, textures, and patterns, the mirrors, mullions, and textiles create a harmonious and luxurious atmosphere, complemented by Roberto Cavalli furniture.

LEONA's lower deck boasts an extraordinary beach club layout, reminiscent of motor yacht TATIANA. However, the design theme takes a different direction. Greek statues sit on the pool edge, spraying colored water into the blue-patterned tile pool. Above, a fiber optic ceiling creates a mesmerizing 'night sky' star pattern. Composite marble reliefs capturing enchanting forest scenes adorn the sides of the pool, while amethyst stones and agates embellish the bar on the starboard side. A Moroccan-inspired hookah room, with sliding glass doors and a fold-down sea terrace door, offers a connection to the sea. The furniture in this area is richly decorated with timber carvings, gold upholstered trims, and sumptuous cushions.

The lounge features a glass cube-textured ceiling pierced by a skylight, surrounded by a mother of pearl cornice. Rich purple tones dominate the room, with gold trims adorning the furniture and sumptuous cushions.

The private top deck of LEONA is a haven of extravagance, blending contemporary and traditional architectural detailing. The central bathroom showcases ornate gold and blue tiles, accentuating the lavish shower room and circular bathtub. Mother-of-pearl panels bordered by white marble and ornate leaf cornicing adorn the bulkheads.

The owner's bedroom combines black and gold finishes, featuring a platform bed with black agate bedside tables flanked by polished black sahara marble. A cubed glass-textured ceiling, punctuated by a large skylight, bathes the room in natural light, highlighting unique loose furniture pieces.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

Related stories

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.

Amels 200 Superyacht Marsa

Marsa showcases a sleek exterior from the drawing board of British designer Tim Heywood. The owner opted for a distinctive two-tone paint job, with the hull, curves, and arches finished in Whisper Gray and the windbreakers decked out in dark gray.

Penned by U.K. firm Winch Design, the elegant interiors were designed with long expeditions in mind. (The owner intends to spend extended periods at sea, exploring the Mediterranean and beyond.) The sprawling living quarters, which can be navigated via a four-deck elevator, include cabins for up to 12 guests and space for lounging, entertaining, and working. The owner also decided to add a balcony to the main deck and an outdoor bar to every level because alfresco cocktails are always welcome after the nine-to-five slog.

As for cruising, Marsa is equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system that enables her to travel some 4,500 nautical miles at 15.5 knots. In other words, the yacht could travel from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to the U.S. (4,042 nautical miles) with no problems. She’ll release fewer emissions than a traditional gas-powered vessel, too.

“For me, again I say this is the most beautiful yacht we’ve made, but I seem to say that with every delivery,” Oomkens added.

Marsa will now embark upon her maiden voyage, following a private itinerary created by her owner.

The Crew Chef Nina Wilson

Nina Wilson was a deckhand on a superyacht who turned her passion for cooking into a full-time job. She then rose to InstaFame as a sous chef on a 70m Motoryacht travelling the world and cooking up a storm! Lucky for ys, back in those days “The Crew Chef” Nina Wilson would post almost daily to instagram allowing us to see her learning process as a Sous Chef on board one of thew industries more popular charter yachts.

More recently, Nina has taken to YouTube where she has carved out a very successful yacht chef YouTube channel (more on that later!)

Perhaps, you have only recently discovered Nina Wilson and her galley talents, if so, you may enjoy the first half of this interview which took place back in 2018 when Nina was still a crew chef. Skip to the end if you are looking for the updated questions and answers from the start of 2022 when Nina had left her first head chef role.

Nina Wilson Interview: As The Crew Chef 2018

superyacht youtube

Can you tell us more about how you got into being a superyacht chef?

I grew up looking through my parent’s photo albums – it was filled with amazing snaps of them at sea working on these glamorous yachts (with very interesting hairstyles – it was the 80s!) After seeing how much fun they had and hearing all their crazy stories, I always knew I wanted to work on the ‘white boats’ as we call them in Australia.

I started out as a stewardess for 2 years, then moved out on deck as a deckhand for another 2, even completing my Yachtmasters! After a stint back in Australia working with my partner running a small sailing yacht, I discovered how much I enjoyed cooking – and then decided to move into the galley! Maybe after two years, I’ll try engineering …. Just joking!

superyacht youtube

How long have you been in yachting for? How easy was it for you to land your first yacht job?

I started back in 2014 and got my very first job as a sole stew within 24hrs of landing in France. Talk about lucky timing! I have always used agents, Peter Insull got me my very first job. YPI and Bluewater have also been great.

Read more: Crew agents list to help you get started in yachting

superyacht youtube

Where did you study, and what qualifications do you have from it?

When I made the decision to move into the galley I knew it was important to get some culinary training to give me a good start. I completed a month-long intensive course at Ashburton Chef’s Academy, and I highly recommend it! I left with a Level 2 in Food Preparation and all the necessary hygiene and food safety certificates.

superyacht youtube

What made you make the decision to transition from deck hand to the galley?

I was a deckhand on a yacht based in the UK – it was always cold and raining outside! So I was forever looking into the nice warm galley with all the delicious food …. I had always enjoyed cooking and after cooking for 8 guests on a tiny sailing boat it really cemented the fact I enjoyed creating meals a lot more than polishing stainless.

superyacht youtube

Who has the better uniform? The deck department or the galley?

I’ve got to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of my chef whites – at 5’2 I had to get some specially made and even then they are baggy. Sorry, but I loved wearing board shorts and a rashie all day!

superyacht youtube

What does a normal day look like for you off charter?

Starting at 8 am, getting ahead with lunch prep before then putting up some brekkie for the crew at 10 am, usually a fruit plate with either a smoothie or muffins – maybe even eggs and bacon on a special day! I’ll then crack on with lunch, trying to squeeze in a bit of dinner prep if I can. 12 pm lunch goes up, and I’ll take a break for 2 hours after that. In the afternoon, along with dinner prep, I’ll try to fit in a few cleaning jobs to keep on top of things. Dinner goes out at 6 pm and I’ll try to smash out the clean down as fast as possible after that!

superyacht youtube

What does a normal day look like for the sous chef on a charter?

Starting at either 7 or 8 depending on what the head chef has asked me – it usually follows the same routine excepting that whenever the guests are eating I’ll be assisting the head chef.

Unfortunately, they always seem to want breakfast at the same time as crew lunch….and then want lunch as I a prepping for dinner! After I put up dinner I will then take a short break before heading back into the galley to help with guest dinner – it can turn into quite a late night!

superyacht youtube

If you could have a table at any restaurant in the world for a dinner reservation tonight, which one would it be, and who would be your dinner date?

Tonight I am craving pasta so much! I would love to head back to a restaurant in Villefranche , Marechiaro. The owners came sailing with my partner and I when we were running the smaller yacht together. Their carbonara is amazing  – they deep fry the pancetta and sprinkle it on top! I need to stop thinking about it…..I’m so hungry now.

Nina Wilson Interview update: 2022

What has been the most interesting thing you learnt from stepping up from sous chef to head chef.

Having to explain everything extremely specifically! Unsurprisingly, people are not mind readers ha!

superyacht youtube

What does a typical day look like as a head chef when working with a Sous Chef?

6/7am I wake up and bake bread, prep proteins for all meals, make breakfast platters. The sous chef joins around 8am depending on the guest movements.

8am – 11am is breakfast service whilst also prepping desserts for the day. I send daily menus off to Chief Stew to put forward to the guests.

11am Guest lunch prep with the sous chef fully swinging into cooking crew lunch.

12pm crew lunch is served, with a small break ideally for us both to sit down and eat! The sous chef goes on break, I continue with guest lunch prep and try to finish all the desserts for the evening as well.

2-3pm is usually guest lunch time. The sous chef returns from break to assist with guest lunch. After guest lunch I go on break for 2 hours.

3-5pm The sous chef prepares crew dinner I return from break and start immediately on guest dinner prep.

6pm Crew dinner is served so we try to sit for a bite to eat.

6.30 Sous chef starts on canape prep, I continue with guest dinner prep. The sous chef and I try to fit in a quick meeting to plan the nest days menus, and make a list of what we need to defrost. Anywhere from 9pm onwards is the guest dinner service, usually ending around 11pm.

Then we clean down the galley and pull items from freezer to defrost.

Bed time!

superyacht youtube

What was your favourite yachtie memory from 2021?

Going provisioning in San Diego at Specialty produce after a season in Alaska – the change in quality of produce made me SO HAPPY!

superyacht youtube

How did you manage your time differently as a head chef (opposed from previous Sous Chef roles)?

Yes, I had to learn trust and delegation – and also forced myself to sit down for meals!

superyacht youtube

What were some stand out dishes from your recent season for the guests?

The halibut burgers, caught the day before. Incredible. Also the spot shrimp tacos were a huge hit!

superyacht youtube

Favourite part of working in the galley on charter yachts?

Getting to be creative everyday!

superyacht youtube

What difficulties did you face with stepping up?

Interpersonal relations.

superyacht youtube

What do the days leading up to a guest pickup look like for you?

I’m usually planning a few menus. Then getting all of the ice creams & sorbets and frozen desserts made, getting sauces, stocks done. Baking off a few extra sourdough loaves to have ready in the freezer!

What was your favourite ingredient of 2021?

Halibut! we had sooooooo much halibut!

superyacht youtube

What has been the greatest achievement (or praise/feedback) you have had recently?

That I made the best chocolate dessert the guest had ever had!! I love it when they describe specific elements of the dish and why they loved it, it means they truly appreciated it.

What advice do you have for new chefs coming into the industry?

Prep ahead and always have alternative ideas. And if the guests change their mind, just go with the flow. Don’t get caught up in what you had planned – always move forward!

superyacht youtube

What advice would you tell your old crew chef self, now that you have head chef experience?

Cook faster! Plus, be more confident about your crew food – they are being treated well!

superyacht youtube

How did covid affect your life on board?

The guests were not eating off the boat, so it was allllll meals onboard.

How did the crew chef YouTube channel come about, and of course- will it continue? (Please say yes!)

I filmed a Atlantic crossing for Jared Watney, however he never ended up using the footage so I asked if I could put together a youtube video from it and after posting it went on from there! It really took off in a way that I certainly wasn’t expecting.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

Look for a rotational position – as my wedding is coming up in September, and I’m not planning on missing it haha!

You can follow more of Nina’s antics at her Instagram account, or over on Youtube.
