“Whoa, take ‘er easy there, Pilgrim.” Who would have thought, the man famous for riding in on horseback, also loved to ride in… on the water? Really and truly, who doesn’t love cruising on a yacht? Marion Robert Morrison, more famously known as John Wayne , is one of the biggest actors of yesteryear. The star of classic blockbusters such as The Searchers, True Grit, El Dorado, and The Longest Day, loved to spend his free time on the water.
The Duke’s (a nickname given to him when he was young, and couldn’t be spotted anywhere without the family dog, “Duke”) passion for the water began early on in his life. Born in Iowa in 1907, John’s family moved to Glendale, California in 1914. He later attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship, and very likely could have pursued that as a career, until suffering a bodysurfing accident that forced him to stop playing, and pursue a new career. So technically, if it wasn’t for his love of the water, we may not have ever known Marion as “John Wayne”. With his successful movie career, John’s passion for the water never left, inspiring him to purchase his beloved yacht, Wild Goose .
The History of Wild Goose
Before she became John Wayne’s yacht, Wild Goose was a warship. Built in 1942, the ship was originally a U.S. Navy Yard Mine Sweeper known as USS YMS-328 . The 136-foot ship sailed in World War II and served the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and the surrounding areas. After WWII, USS YMS-328 was decommissioned in 1946 and later sold. After going through a couple of different owners, she was eventually purchased for $116,000 by John Wayne in 1962 and then underwent a serious and expensive renovation.
Cool Features of the Wild Goose
Life Onboard
From friendly fishing trips to Cataline cruises, this yacht perfectly symbolized Wayne’s social life. The Duke loved to play host to a variety of movie stars, musicians, professional athletes, and politicians such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Henry Fonda, Sammy Davis Jr., Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon. Some of his celebrity pals would even charter the boat themselves, including Tom Jones, the band America, and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. Much like her owner, Wild Goose also became a movie star, appearing in The President’s Analyst in 1967 and Skidoo in 1968.
The Legacy of the Wild Goose
Even though he often said he would never sell Wild Goose , shortly before his death in 1979, Wayne sold the yacht to help get his affairs in order. After exchanging a few hands of ownership again, the vessel found a new home with Hornblower in 1996.
Since Wayne’s ownership, more changes and renovations have been made to Wild Goose , however with an attempt to keep it as original as possible. “Remnants of Wayne’s presence exist both through efforts to preserve the boat as he had it and modern touches that remind visitors whose yacht they are on.”, mentions The Orange County Register . “The balance is apparent in the Fireplace Room. A naval battle mural Wayne commissioned faces the wood-burning fireplace, while framed movie posters of his films line the worn, white walls on either side.” And with all of the stories those walls could tell, it’s a no-brainer to see why Wild Goose was honored with an addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

On Board M/Y Goose: A trip back in time for our MD
Superyacht Content’s Managing Director, Mark Upton, took a trip back on board M/Y Goose at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, where she was listed for sale with Cecil Wright . It was on this classic vessel that he landed his first Superyacht crew job before moving up to become a yacht captain. Mark, however, remembers Atlantic Goose (her name when he worked on board) as being more than just the first yacht he ever worked on, it was also where he met his wife, Victoria.
In our interview with Mark, we learned more about the yacht’s legacy, and how it felt to return aboard after 25 years.
About M/Y Goose:
Built to Lloyds class by renowned UK shipyard Tough Brothers and completed in 1987, M/Y Goose was launched originally as BRAVE GOOSE – the second yacht by the same name belonging to the late Sir Donald Gosling. She was rebuilt in 2000 and has been meticulously maintained ever since, with the most recent significant work taking place in 2021/2022. The vessel has just passed her Lloyds 5-Year survey.
M/Y Goose can accommodate up to 10 guests across five deluxe suites comprising a full-beam master stateroom on the main deck with a further four en-suite guest cabins positioned amidships on the lower deck for maximum comfort. Further accommodation can sleep a crew of ten to ensure a high level of guest service.
The contemporary but country-style interior for Goose was conceived by H2 Yacht Design and features delicate walnut and ash wood paneling and fine soft furnishing fabrics in the expansive interior guest lounge.
Q&A with Mark Upton, former Captain and current Managing Director of Superyacht Content:
1. how long did you work onboard m/y goose, and what was your role on board.
MU: I joined “the Goose” as a deckhand on 11th October 1997. 25 years ago today. I joined in Hamilton, Bermuda, just before a boss trip before heading south to the Caribbean. I was only actually on board for about 10 weeks due to the owner going through the process of buying a new yacht. So, at the end of December, a few of us moved on to the new yacht.
2. Having worked on a few vessels in different roles, what sets M/Y Goose apart from other Superyachts you worked aboard?
MU: She was and still is a very traditional design. She probably bridges the gap between yachts of the 60’s and 70’s, and the more modern design of a full-width owner’s cabin. However, by modern standards, she is still small, compared with recent yachts of the same length. At the MYS she was next to M/Y Gitana, which is a very similar length but looks a whole lot bigger.
3. Stepping back on board 25 years later, how did that feel? Has the vessel’s interior changed dramatically? Does it have the same atmosphere?
MU: To me, she seems exactly the same. A lot has changed really as she’s been refitted, but the feel and style are still there, and still the same. She’s such a classic.
4. During your time on Goose is there a memory/destination that sticks out to you as your favourite moment onboard?
MU: My first day on board. It was the day I met my future wife for the first time. I knew right then and there. Unfortunately for me, she didn’t see the attraction straight away! Bermuda and Atlantic Goose will always hold fond memories for me.
5. Lastly, M/Y Goose has recently been listed for sale. Could you describe the type of owner you would like to see buy M/Y Goose and how you would like the boat’s legacy and history to continue?
MU: I think the previous owners of The Goose all fall into the same category. Traditional British owners who view the yacht as a home from home. The current Captain and I both described her as a “country cottage’. She is like a home-from-home, comfortable, familiar, and a place you look forward to being. I think the new owners will be similar. She’s a great yacht to travel on and be comfortable on when you get there. Ideally, someone who will be sympathetic to her history and maintain her as a classic yacht, rather than try to modernise her aesthetically too much. It would be great to see her looking the same in another 25 years!
Cecil Wright is delighted to announce their appointment as the Central Agent for the sale of GOOSE , the 45m British-built motor yacht, with an asking price of €4,950,000 (excluding tax).

Sir Donald Gosling Obituary: Remembering the Superyacht Owner
Generous, warm, knowledgeable, modest and ever the gentleman, superyachting legend and former owner of the 75 metre Leander , Sir Donald Gosling has died at the aged of 90. BOAT International reflects on his life-long love affair with yachting.
Sir Donald's love affair with the sea started aged just nine when his mother used to take him to the Round Tower in Portsmouth to watch the warships coming and going. From that point, yachts, ships and the sea dominated his thoughts, and enrolling in the Royal Navy was the logical outcome.
After a spell of active service at the end of WWII and beyond, Gosling found himself on civvy street following the post-war cuts in the Navy. With the transition to land and training as a surveyor came the hankering to get back on the water, and with the help of a few savings, his first “yacht” followed shortly after: a three metre clinker-built boat with an inboard engine, which he kept on the Thames.
A successful business partnership with Sir Ronald Hobson meant Gosling was soon able to trade up, and in 1953 he acquired Elizabeth Gertrude , a fine yacht launched in 1935 that had been built for Lord Rothschild. In 1960, he built his first custom yacht – the 22.9 metre Silver Goose .
It was the first of many yachts that would bear the Goose name, and she was followed in 1972 by the first, 35 metre Brave Goose – built by Toughs of Teddington on the River Thames – her name changed after a promise made to his son who had shown great courage going through an operation as a child.
Another Brave Goose – 41.7 metres and also built at Toughs – followed in 1986, and at the same time Gosling acquired the 48.8 metre Katalina , which he deployed to the Caribbean. No sooner had he sold Katalina – deciding two yachts was a headache – then he sold Brave Goose , and was suddenly without a yacht. However he had fallen in love with the 49.25 metre Edenforth , and bought her in 1988.
In 1990 Peter Insull asked him to go to a shipyard in Germany, which was making the transition from warships to yachts. There, he saw a 2,000 tonne yacht under construction and bought her, imposing his own wishes on the build. In 1993, Leander G (after HMS Leander – Gosling’s Navy posting) was launched and has remained a staple of the superyacht scene ever since, welcoming both charter guests and Royalty.
Appointed Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom in 2012, Gosling also held a long association with charitable causes, particularly the Royal Navy. He served the White Ensign Association for over 40 years, including as president, and in 1992 created The Gosling Foundation.
The Foundation provides help to a wide spectrum of causes with priority given to the Royal Navy and HM Forces, the police and law and order. The Foundation became known for joining forces with the UK Government providing a substantial grant to save HMS Victory for future generations to appreciate. Sir Donald remained a trustee, vice patron and president of other charitable trusts including the Greater London Fund for the Blind, The Labrador Rescue Trust, Chatham Historic Dockyard, The Hobson Charity and the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation.
Gosling’s passion and enthusiasm for the sea – whether enjoying Leander , cruising the Thames on his canal boat Maisie, or going out for a blast on the newest Brave Goose , a 17 metre Sunseeker – and for yachts in particular, made him as a true legend in superyachting.

Where to drink Grey Goose in London this summer
By Condé Nast Traveller
Follow this season's cocktail trend to some of the best bars in London
SINCE LONDON'S NEW COCKTAIL REVOLUTION a few years ago, the city has embraced ever-changing drinks trends - from science-led innovations to fermented ingredients and pre-bottled concoctions. This summer, though, the mood is for lighter creations that are tailor-made for sipping in the sun on the outdoor terrace. They're drinks inspired by the classic Tom Collins, and use subtle, not overly sweet fruit flavours. 'Vodka, lime and soda is a big trend this summer,' says Joe McCanta. 'People are also moving away from full-bodied brown spirit cocktails in favour of more summery spritz-style drinks such as Grey Goose^® ^ Le Grand Fizz.'
Joe McCanta is a master mixologist who has worked in New York and London and is adept at spotting drinks trends from his prime position as Grey Goose Brand Ambassador. Born in California, the dapper 30-year-old trained as a jazz pianist before falling in love with cocktails and developing his craft in New York's East Village and Istanbul. Alongside Grey Goose, he has worked with El Bulli, the Soho House Group and even flavour boffins at Reading University.
WHERE TO HEAD THIS SUMMER FOR LE GRAND FIZZ COCKTAILS
Where to head this summer for the Grey Goose signature Le Grand Fizz summer cocktail, an elegant mix of Grey Goose vodka, St-Germain ® elderflower liqueur, fresh lime and soda water built over ice in an oversized wine glass for the ultimate refreshment for any summer occasion, and Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz flavours collection made from Grey Goose La Poire, Grey Goose Le Citron, Grey Goose L'Orange and corresponding aromatic garnishes.
ON-TREND IN WEST LONDON
Harvey nichols fifth floor bar in partnership with grey goose.
The goose lands in the heart of Knightsbridge, in dramatic fashion, with a complete redesign of the iconic Fifth Floor Bar . The bar has long been a favourite hangout for stylish shoppers in need of a post-retail cocktail, and has enjoyed several different wardrobe changes. The latest look sports a French luxury outfit inspired by Art Nouveau and the Twenties yacht set, using leather, brass, marble and dark wood to create a elegant, escapist bubble at the top of Harvey Nichols. Splashes of red and blue illuminate white and grey leather, while blue banquettes and private booths face outward to views over the Knightsbridge skyline. To match the decor, the bar team have been concocting new cocktails using Grey Goose vodka, including the full Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz Collection of summer cocktails featuring Grey Goose, Grey Goose La Poire, Grey Goose Le Citron and Grey Goose L'Orange.
MARYLEBONE MOVER & SHAKER
Two of the defining trends on London's culinary landscape in recent years have been the pop-up and the supper club. Combining the two, Carousel could be accused of having its cake and eating it - but only if there's a world-renowned pastry chef in residence. Since it opened off Baker Street in 2014, this industrial-chic space has offered curious diners the chance to experiment with different cuisines and encounter emerging chefs before anyone else. The roll call includes Portuguese hot shot Leandro Carreira and Argentinian firebrand Javier Rodriguez. Over the summer, visiting chefs such as Tommy Foster (Moro, Boca di Lupo) and Carl Ishizaki of Stockholm's Sushi Sho will be whipping up inventive aperitifs using Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz as their starting point.
KING'S CROSS KINGPIN
The gilbert scott.
The former Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras is a Victorian costume drama of a building, with its magnificent redbrick exteriors, high ceilings, rotund pillars and pomp-and-circumstance gilt. From August, Grey Goose is transforming the bar at Marcus Wareing's landmark restaurant into a living herb garden, ingredients from which will be handpicked to garnish a collection of Grey Goose Bloody Mary's and signature Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz's masterfully mixed by Dav Eames' bar experts. The departure hall with its Eurostar services to the home of Grey Goose is temptingly near. Bring a passport just in case.
COVENT GARDEN STAR
Tredwell's.
Grey Goose is bringing the French Riviera to the heart of London's theatreland with the launch of its summer terrace at Tredwell's , Marcus Wareing's dramatic all-day restaurant off Seven Dials. Guests are invited to sip Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz cocktails under blue- and white-striped parasols and fruit trees. There will be a series of Summer Soiree events featuring live jazz. It's a taste of the Côte d'Azur in Covent Garden (straw hats optional).
KNIGHTSBRIDGE PREMIERE
Restaurant ours.
Earlier this year saw the opening of the latest project from Tom Sellers, the sizzling young talent who opened the award-winning Story when he was just 26. The conservatory-style Restaurant Ours on Brompton Road continues his love affair with seasonal British cuisine. Grey Goose is launching a pop-up terrace at the restaurant's open-roofed bar. The bar team have expertly re-imagined the Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz cocktail collection to create a series of delicious twists on the summer classic - wear something floral to match the elegant garden-style setting.
COOL DOWN ON THE STRAND
Radio bar, me london.
The hip Parisian neighbourhood of Faubourg Saint-Antoine has become a more relaxed alternative to the over-exposed Marais with its galleries, coffee shops and boutiques. Here you will find Bertrand Grébaut, a dab hand at conjuring contemporary bistro dishes with playful combinations at his Michelin-starred restaurant Septime, a recent entrant to 'The World's 50 Best Restaurants'. Bertrand has taken the delicate flavours of Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz and created a summer sorbet using Grey Goose vodka, St-Germain elderflower liqueur, lime and white peach. But no need to reserve a table at Septime to sample one of his creations: the Grey Goose Sorbet Cart will be taking up residence over the summer at the Radio rooftop bar at ME London hotel , a perennial favourite with the fashion crowd.
HOW TO MAKE LE GRAND FIZZ
Combine 35ml Grey Goose vodka with 15ml St-Germain elderflower liqueur and squeeze of two fresh lime wedges over ice in an oversized wine glass and top with 60ml soda water. Garnish with three fresh lime wedges for the ultimate refreshment for any summer occasion. You can adapt the recipe using the Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz flavours collection made from Grey Goose La Poire, Grey Goose Le Citron, Grey Goose L'Orange and corresponding aromatic garnishes.

Jill Zarin blamed “Below Deck” head steward Fraser Olender for her “disaster” megayacht outing, which was documented on an episode of the Bravo series last week.
The “Real Housewives of New York City” alum said she didn’t have any regrets about her behavior, which included taking issue with the food service, requesting a specific type of ice and even suggesting guests be given a bell to summon crew members.
“I went into it with the attitude that I want to make a good show. I was me, I literally was me. I was me the way I am in my real life,” Zarin, 60, told Heather McDonald on Tuesday’s episode of her “Juicy Scoop” podcast .
“If I like my Diet Coke then I want another. If I don’t like it then I will send it back. If I don’t like my food then I send it back. Most people do,” she continued.
“I think if the crew had a different attitude toward me and said ‘Jill, she’s a little pushy, she’s a Jewish mother, she’s a little bit of a know it all’ I think everybody would have leaned into it.”
The reality TV star went on to detail the two-day stay, which cost her pal an eye-watering $45,000 for “five meals” along with lodging.

“You get on the boat at 12 and right away you get lunch,” she said. “You get an explanation — which I actually taped on my phone that I am going to post — of Fraser [Olender] explaining the layout of the next two days.”
Zarin continued, “In fact, one of the things he emphasized which is ironic is that there would be snacks and food all the time everywhere. He actually emphasized and completely didn’t deliver. When I think about the trip, it was the head stew’s job to make sure things went seamlessly, and I kind of blame him for the trip being a total disaster.”
The Bravolebrity noted that she “felt terrible” for her friends who paid for the trip.

“They spent an enormous amount of money [and] I wanted them to have an amazing experience,” she said.
“I did this show because my friends wanted to go on TV. I don’t blame them, a lot of people do. [But] I didn’t mind doing it with them because as long as I am me, I am good.”
“Below Deck” cast member and stewardess, Barbara “Barbie” Pascual, later admitted Zarin “was right” about some of her seemingly outlandish requests on the show.
“You guys, I watched the show back, and I don’t think that Jill was as bad as it looked, and I just wanna also say that there were so many other moments where she was super fun and sweet and nice,” Pascual said on her Instagram Story last week.
She acknowledged that the former “Housewife” was “demanding,” but she was “not rude” and was making requests that were “actually normal yacht requirements” and “pretty logical.”
“She was right. She just wanted nugget ice in her Diet Coke, that’s not a big deal,” the stewardess added.

However, during the episode, Pascual said Zarin was “too much” to handle.
“I think she’s annoying. You’re a freeloading guest who’s extremely demanding. This is too much for me. I need another stew just for Jill,” she said in a confessional.
Meanwhile, Olender quipped, “Jill is crawling into my brain and eating away at my soul.”
Chef Anthony Iracane also took a swipe at the Jill & Ally founder in his confessional.
“I think the primary, she’s OK, but her friend taking over the boat, it’s like she’s a f–king captain. Like taking over the ship,” he said.
“Below Deck” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo
