Rain Made This Chequessett Yacht & Country Club Wedding All the More Romantic

The couple had to scrap their beach ceremony for one in a boathouse, but they couldn't have been happier.

When Molly Rossiter and Hayden Callahan first started dating in the fall of 2014, the then-University of Wisconsin students weren’t quite sure where their relationship was headed. They had mutual friends and went on study dates and to concerts, but Molly was just starting her senior year; Hayden, on the other hand, was about to graduate in December and move to Boston for an engineering job. That uncertainty disappeared, however, when the couple took a weeks-long road trip just two months into their courtship. “I think we kind of fell in love then and it solidified our relationship,” Molly says. They dated long distance for about a year while Molly finished up school and, eventually, joined Hayden in Boston.

After living in the same city for several months, Molly says they knew they were “heading towards marriage.” In December 2016, the couple started looking at engagement rings. “The first time we went in [to Barmakian Jewelers] we were just looking to see what size I was, and we actually ended up buying the ring together,” Molly says. “We had no idea that was going to happen.” Even though Molly knew what the ring looked like, she still didn’t know when Hayden would actually pop the question. She’d planned a surprise getaway to the Adirondack Mountains in February 2017, and had an inkling that Hayden might propose then. On the drive up, “He was acting so calm and collected,” she recalls. “I remember thinking there’s no way he’s going to do it.” When they got to their Airbnb, though, Molly had just started putting away groceries when she turned around to see that Hayden was down on one knee. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! It was a surprise to me even though I knew about the ring and everything,’” Molly says.

The pair spent the rest of the weekend quietly soaking up their engagement—and then the planning began. Molly and Hayden visited a few venues on Cape Cod, but weren’t sold on any of them. On Fourth of July weekend, they visited Chequessett Yacht & Country Club in Wellfleet. “It was the last one we were going to and at that point I was like ‘I don’t know if we should even go all the way to look at it,’ but we did, and we fell in love right away,” Molly says. They signed the contract on the spot. Then, on their wedding day, came every bride’s worst nightmare: rain. At the last minute, the couple decided to swap their planned beach ceremony for one in the yacht club’s boathouse instead. But yet, “I’m so glad [it rained],” the bride says. “The pictures came out so well and it turned into this beautiful night with the sunset, so it was actually perfect.”

THE DETAILS

While searching for hair inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest, Molly fell in love with the look of flower-adorned tresses. “Stacy [Kuehn] and I had a great consultation where she tried a bunch of different styles and we settled on a loose wave,” Molly says, “It held pretty well, which was surprising, and the flowers were still in my hair. Hayden pulled out about 40 bobby pins at the end of the night.” 

Outside of their ceremony, Molly and Hayden greeted guests with a custom wood sign from Etsy vendor Oaky Designs.

The yacht club’s boathouse provided an intimate, rustic-chic setting for Molly and Hayden’s ceremony. “Everyone was there watching us,” Molly says. “It felt very ‘together’ and cozy.”

Pinned to a chicken wire memo board, the couple’s DIY escort cards stemmed from a template created by Etsy shop Minty Paperie.

“I’m not really one for color, so I knew I wanted mostly greenery,” Molly says of the reception decor. The long tables featured loose, flowing garlands dotted with cream and pale-pink roses.

The couple treated guests to a naked white-almond cake with both raspberry and champagne buttercream. “I actually didn’t eat any until right before we went off for our honeymoon, but it was so, so good,” Molly says. 

Molly and Hayden called on a few of their friends to submit songs that they wanted to hear at the couple’s wedding. For their first dance, though, the DJ played “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones. “ My mom loves her and I kind of grew up listening to her,” Molly says.

Chequessett Club Wedding

Becca and Troy’s Chequessett Club wedding in Wellfleet, MA, centered around their love of the beach! We started the day with a first look at their favorite beach in Brewster, MA. Low tide is incredibly meaningful to them, so we planned the day around the tide chart. I also have a love of the beach and low tide. Photographing in bare feet surrounded by smooth sand is always a special treat. Becca and Troy’s wedding day brought sun and haze, creating a dreamy backdrop at their favorite place.

Becky and Troy requested family photos at their favorite Brewster beach. In order to capture this special request and flattering light for family photos we came up with a plan. Casual group photographs on the beach, to honor that special place. We also carved out additional time for more formal groups a little later in the day. The best of both worlds!

Their Chequessett Club wedding ceremony took place on the sand above the beach, between their tent set meticulously for dinner and the boathouse, ready for an evening of dancing.

Laurel from Cape Cod Celebrations made sure every detail was absolutely perfect. Becky and Troy had so many personal touches. Their guestbook consisted of postcards for each guest to write on. The postcards were given to a family member to mail to the newlyweds throughout their first year. Instead of table numbers, tables were named after the places the two had traveled together. A cute memory accompanied each one. The notes from Becky’s fourth grade class with marriage advice was my personal favorite! The cocktail hour took place in the boathouse, after which guests moved back across the sand to dinner under the tent and back to the boathouse for dancing. This location has incredible space to customize! A lounge area was designed for the evening, complete with wood benches, patio lights, and games to play.

After dinner, we snuck back to the beach for some more photos of the the couple. We were looking for sunset, but instead got a soft, dreamy fog that was just as beautiful. I really enjoy breaking up portrait time with my couples, as we did today. They ended up with a collection of images on their favorite beach at noon, a few images under umbrellas before cocktail hour, and this set below after dinner. It’s so lovely to have a wide variety of light and energy in your final image collection. When you put these all together in an album, the story of the day comes through.

After dinner, guests got a fun surprise when an ice cream truck pulled up right outside the boathouse. Kids and adults gathered around the special lounge area, complete with patio lights, to take a break from dancing and enjoy a sweet treat.

Chequessett Club Wedding

Chequessett Club is a truly remarkable wedding venue, conveniently located just up the street from my parents’ house!  As they are members of the club, I have enjoyed countless hours at the beach and on the golf course. The venue offers a breathtaking view of Wellfleet Harbor and Great Island, which becomes even more stunning during sunset, especially at low tide.

Chequessett Club Wedding Locations

When it comes to wedding locations, Chequessett Club has it all. The clubhouse and a 9-hole golf course are situated on the inland side of the road, while on the oceanside, you’ll find a private beach, boathouse, and boatyard. Not only is it one of the few wedding venues in Wellfleet, but it is also among the very few on Cape Cod that provide the unique option of a beachfront wedding ceremony.

Private Beach

The private beach at Chequessett Club is an ideal setting for a beach wedding ceremony or for capturing beautiful wedding photos. Although the beach narrows at high tide, it expands significantly as the tide recedes, revealing stunning tidal flats and reflecting pools that add a magical touch to your photos. Additionally, picturesque sailboats are usually moored there, and a short walk down the beach is the historic Elephant House, a charming backdrop for photos.

Just above the private beach is an elevated area surrounded by beach roses, where boats are stored at Chequessett Yacht Club. This location offers a panoramic view of Wellfleet Harbor and Great Island, making it another excellent spot for capturing memorable wedding photos. You’ll also have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some colorful boats, adding a unique touch to your album.

The rustic Boathouse at Chequessett Club is a major highlight of this Cape Cod wedding venue. While it may be small in size, it boasts absolutely incredible views. The Boathouse is spacious enough to host a cocktail hour, a small wedding reception, or even dancing and cake cutting. A large covered deck extends along the length of the building, providing a stunning view of the bay. Moreover, an additional deck area has recently been added to the left side of the building. To access the beach, a beautiful boardwalk and a set of stairs lead directly from the Boathouse.

For those considering the Clubhouse, Chequessett Club also offers that option. The Clubhouse features a large tented deck at the back, overlooking the golf course. This spacious area can accommodate larger wedding parties and serves as an ideal location for dinner seating.

If you’re looking to explore more photo locations near Chequessett Club, there are plenty of options to choose from. However, if you’d like to venture offsite, I have extensive knowledge of the best spots in Wellfleet. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of photographing numerous families and couples in this area. Some of my favorite locations include the Old Lightkeeper’s House, Uncle Tim’s Bridge, Newcomb Hollow Beach, the Gut, and a secret sunset spot that I hold dear.

Chequessett Yacht Country Club Wedding Rainy Day Photos

Grace and Sean came all the way from California to be married at the Chequesett Yacht and Country Club.   Chequessett Yacht club is one of those unique venues on the cape that is on the water, and provides a venue right on the beach.  A hard to find venue on the Cape believe it or not.  Wouldn’t you know, on the last wedding of my season, it rained.  I had a bit of bad luck this year with weddings and weather.  The days it didn’t rain, it was bitter cold, and on the none bitter cold, it was windy.  We took it all in stride and my couples never once complained.  What are you going to do when you can’t control it?    The weather never bothers me especially if the couples agree to go out and play in the rain.  Grace and Sean did just that and we got some fabulous photos.  The wedding coordinator was Olivia From Cape Cod Celebrations. Desserts were provided by Local Scoops  They brought these amazing smelling crepes to the Chequesett Boat house instead of your traditional wedding cake.

I absolutely love this image and the way the shoes. They got married in a tiny Inn in Wellfleet and then drove over to the Chequessett to get married.    She had visions of these shoes…

Instead, she ended up in these Hunter red rain boots which was just so cute!  I mean, you never really think of wedding day and rain boots but she made them ROCK.  They were her sisters and she threw them on and never thought about it for the rest of the day.  Love brides that just roll with it!

The bride and groom portraits were so much fun. They were such troopers! They were willing to go out sans umbrella and get some photos.  It made by day because I knew we could rock the portraits if they just gave me five minutes.

Then moving into the rustic Boathouse for cocktail hour, with a raw bar on the tented deck and beach games in the boatyard. For dinner, stroll a few steps up to the tented clubhouse deck where your guests will enjoy sunset views overlooking the 9th fairway. Finally, finish up the evening with dancing and cake in the Boathouse, possibly even a stroll down a moonlit beach.  

Both venues, overlook Wellfleet Harbor and Cape Cod Bay. Our unique South-facing site offers views of the entire Upper and Lower Cape Cod. Photographers regularly refer their clients to our private beach for their wedding photos, and the Boathouse's vast deck provides a backdrop that will amaze your guests.

When Jen and Rob reached out to me to photograph their Cape Cod wedding, the excitement for a wedding OUTSIDE of Rhode Island was palpable. I pictured all the Cape Cod, beachy + nautical things! Their vision was for the quintessential summer wedding with a mix of traditional, nautical, and elegance. And like other weddings I’ve photographed, I love both an island wedding and one with nautical style.

I’d say Jen and Rob’s wedding at the quaint Chequessett Yacht & Country Club was the ultimate Cape Cod wedding!!

After some photos of the bride and groom getting ready, we scooted over to the historic Uncle Tim’s Bride for Jen and Rob’s First Look! This iconic bridge was built in the 1800s and was such a unique spot to do a First Look. There was definitely some wedding day jitters, but luckily the First Look was great for Jen + Rob to get those nerves calmed.

Jen and Rob tied the knot by the sea. They were surrounded by friends and family on a white sand beach with beautiful views of Wellfleet Harbor. Guests enjoyed cocktails in the old Boathouse while browsing their oyster escort cards and slurping down clams at the raw bar. Meanwhile as cocktail hour closed, we gathered the whole wedding for a group photo. We then headed up the hill to the Country Club for an elegant sit-down dinner. Toasts were made, sentimental speeches from the groom prompted tears, and before long we were headed back down to the Boathouse for the real party! Jen and Rob cut the cake, walked barefoot on the beach for sunset photos and danced the night away to the band GQ and the Lady.

Congratulations to Jen + Rob!! You have now gotten me hooked on Cape Cod weddings!

About Chequessett Yacht & Country Club

When you are looking for Cape Cod’s best wedding Venues and If you dream of getting married in a cozy and rustic-chic atmosphere, Chequessett Yacht & Country Club is the place for you.  The Club’s history began on March 18, 1929. Since then, the venue has offered a lot of enjoyable sporting and social activities to its clients. Later over the years, many couples have discovered Chequessett as the ideal location to have an authentic Cape Cod wedding.

Its location

It’s situated on 106 acres with picturesque views of undeveloped woodlands, Wellfleet Harbor, and the Herring River on Cape Cod in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Gorgeous ocean views become part of your event and a stunning backdrop for your event photo session. Say “I do” on a white-sand beach as blue waves lap on the shore.

Facilities and capacity

You can happily celebrate your wedding, ceremony, reception, or rehearsal dinner at this country club. Chequessett has enough space for couples to share their special day with up to 200 guests. You can choose to have your ceremony or reception underneath twinkling fairy lights and lanterns in the cedar-shingled Boathouse Gallery or gaze out over the golf course in the Clubhouse Gallery. The ceremony on the beach is also wonderful. You can exchange vows at the water’s edge. You’ll be offered tented decks in case of rainy weather. Just imagine beginning your event with your ceremony on our private beach with the picturesque backdrop of Wellfleet Bay.

Then moving into the rustic Boathouse for cocktail hour and beach games in the boatyard. Of course, your guests will enjoy awesome sunset views. Finally, finish up the evening with dancing and cake in the Boathouse, possibly even a stroll down a moonlit beach.

Chequessett Club’s semi-private nine-hole golf course has two sets of tees for 18-hole play with fabulous views overlooking Wellfleet Harbor. The course has challenging shot-making decisions, water hazards, small undulating greens, and strategically placed bunkers to add to the fun and challenge of this unique semi-links course.

Along with the unique offerings of the course, Chequessett Club hosts a variety of playing opportunities, including golf mixers, tournaments, and leagues; Public welcome!

GOLF RULES & REGULATIONS

The Chequessett Club has established certain rules to ensure the safety and enjoyment of members, their guests, and non-members alike.

GENERAL GOLF COURSE RULES

• Except when modified by the Club’s local rules, the rules of golf of the United States Golf Association (USGA) govern play. Local rules appear on the Club’s scorecard.
• All players must check-in at the Pro Shop prior to play.
• The Course Superintendent and the Club’s office shall determine when the course conditions prohibit play on any or all holes.
• All play must start on #1 Tee unless otherwise directed by the Pro Shop staff.
• No more than four players per group, unless authorized by the Pro Shop staff.
• Repair ball marks and spike marks on greens and replace divots in fairways.
• Rake all tracks before leaving a sand bunker. Place rake outside of the bunker.
• Practice golf activities are limited to the practice green and designated driving range. Practice is prohibited to, or on, regular greens and fairways of the golf course.
• Each player must have a set of clubs and separate bag.
• No coolers of any kind are allowed on the Clubs premises. Club supplied coolers & beverages are allowed at the Club. No exceptions.
• The Club shall not be liable for damage caused by errant golf balls.

TEE TIME POLICIES

Tee times are required from April 1st through October 30th. Tee times can be reserved in person or through the Club’s website: www.Chequessettclub.com. Reservations must include the name of each member, guest, or non-member playing. All non-members must reserve tee times online and pre-pay the greens fees. All members, guests, and non-members must check in at the Pro Shop before advancing to the first tee. If you do not plan to use your tee time, please call, and cancel within 24 hours to allow others to play. Reserving a foursome with the intention of single play is strictly prohibited.

GOLF HANDICAPS

Golf handicaps are required for Club leagues, Club tournaments, scrambles, quotas, and certain special club events. Members should post all scores after playing a round. Golf handicaps can be purchased by contacting the Massachusetts Golf Association. The Club doesn’t process handicap renewals or new registrations any longer. Link to Renew/Join below.

MGA Handicap Renew/Join

Suggested proper attire includes collared shirts for men, tucked in. No athletic attire, sweat suits, or tennis attire. For women, suggested attire includes sleeveless shirts with a collar or round collar shirts with sleeves. No athletic attire, sweat suits, tennis attire, halters or tube tops, nor tank tops. Only soft spike shoes and flat-soled sneakers may be used on the course.

PACE OF PLAY

Chequessett Club golf course has a pace of play of roughly 2 hours. Players in a group of 4 should finish 9 holes within the two hour timeframe for 9 holes. The responsibility of golfers is to be prepared to play and observe the “Ready Golf” recommendation. If your group falls behind the group in front of you, the expectation is that you make every effort to get back in position. Club officials reserve the right to ask players to pick up their balls and move forward to comply with the course pace of play.

COURSE CONDITIONS

Chequessett’s Course Superintendent determines whether the course is suitable for play and whether certain golf cart restrictions apply on a given day. Signs will indicate most restrictions. Golfers using riding carts must comply with any restrictions and follow carts signs without delay.

ELECTRIC GOLF CART OPERATION & RULES

• Individuals operating electric riding carts must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 16 years of age.
• Carts are restricted to two riders and two bags.
• Carts must follow the 90-degree cart rule. All carts should enter the fairway at 90 degrees from the cart path when approaching the position of a player’s ball. Carts are prohibited on the shoulder or surface of any tee, green, or bunker.
• The Course Superintendent determines if course conditions force the use of cart paths only or if prohibited altogether. If this occurs, it will be posted in the Pro Shop and by signs on the course.
• The driver of the cart always assumes the responsibility for returning the cart in the same condition when rented. The driver is also responsible for any damage caused during then operation of the cart.

BLUE (DISABILITY) FLAG PRIVILEGES & RESTRICTIONS

Chequessett Club recognizes the need for a disability flag program to enhance the golfing experience for qualifying members, guests, and non-members. Blue Flags for golf carts are available in the Pro Shop. In all cases, the 90 Degree Rule applies. Carts must park at least 30 feet from the green and near, but not on, the tee box.
