RC Sailboat Buyer’s Guide

Whether you’re after some peaceful weekend sailing at your local pond, or you plan on blowing the competition out of the water at RC races, a great RC sailboat is a must have.

We know there’s lots of options out there – but don’t worry, we’re here to help you find the best RC sailboat for you!

There’s a range on the market, from the fast and furious like Volantexrc RC Sailboat to models just perfect for a Sunday morning cruise. Here’s what to look out for.

While RC sailboats are speedy, they certainly aren’t the fastest boats on the water, and many hobbyists who want a zoom around the lake opt for a catamaran or race boat. That’s not to say sailboats aren’t speedy – with those designed for racing reaching up to 30mph. However, most sailboats are perfect for a tranquil day on the water, just like their full scale counterparts!

If you’ve got a need for speed, get a sailboat like DragonForce 65 RC Sailboat which is specifically designed for competitions with a lightweight design.

RC sailboats will come with a steering servo, most likely already installed. The rudder is used for steering which can make them slightly less smooth to steer than other RC models, but they should still be very easy to control.

Design and Detail

A DIY RC sailboat allows you to be a little more creative when it comes to the detail, and many hobbyists choose to put their own stamp on their boat with unique colors and patterns. Small but intricate details will give your sailboat a more realistic look and help it stand out from the rest at competitions.

A long, sleek design will allow the boat to go faster across the water, while bigger and heavier models are perfect for slower speeds. If you’re serious about RC sailboats, most can be upgraded with new parts to get them race-ready.

Sailing the high seas with your RC sailboat is a great way to spend an afternoon, or an entire day, and our top 3 RC sailboats will guarantee you hours of fun. For the easy to follow instructions, smooth and sleek design, and the high quality parts, the DragonFlite 95 RC Sailboat claims the top spot for best RC sailboat.

FAQs About RC Sailboats

If you do not see your question, or an answer to it, listed below, get in touch with us and we’ll happily give you one!

How do RC Sailboats work?

RC Sailboats work through radio control, which is a given considering the “RC” in the name, and a bit of skill. You need to steer, draw the sail, etc. Interestingly enough, it’s a lot like sailing a real sailboat, but you’re using a controller to do it.

This is where the skill part comes in. Drawing the sails, for example, requires timing and precision to ensure that you’re doing it properly. If you don’t, you face it sinking, should the model be a very extensive one, or not sailing properly at all.

the-best-rc-sailboat

Where can I race a RC Sailboat?

You can race a RC Sailboat virtually anywhere. Although, racing in the ocean may not be the best idea if you’re very invested, both emotionally and financially, in your boat.

This is where lines come in. A lot of users will have a line system to ensure that if there is a crash and their boat sinks, or whatever the case may be, they can still retrieve their vessel without actually having to go into the water.

Are there are RC Sailboats that use wind?

Yes! Some RC Sailboats do not use electricity or a motor as a source to run. Some only work with windy weather, but still require a controller for steering, drawing the sails, etc.

What happens when the wind stops?

This is another instance where a tow line comes in handy. If the wind stops you have two options – wait for it to come back, or use your tow line to reel it back in. Some users have small tugboats that are able to go out and retrieve a RC Sailboat that has a downed sail, has stalled, etc.

What if it tips?

If your RC Sailboats tips, it’s obviously not a very good one. The good quality ones have something at the bottom to ensure this doesn’t happen unless it’s hit by another one, has a hole in the side, etc.

It may tip into the water from the wind or have the bow go under water, but it should not tip on its side completely in any instance other than one of the reasons previously mentioned.

If it does tip, reel it in using your tow line or go into the water and get it.

I would definitely go for K2 – manufactured by Sailboat RC company. That 1-metre hull beast won World AND European Championship, USA Nationals, Southern America Cup, Australian Nats…and all in 2017/2018 season!!

Check it out, it is outstanding piece of art really, a must have RC Sailboat.

I am looking for 1 mtr fibreglass remote controlled sailing boat preferably European or american. Thanks Annette

' src=

Hej! Have you found something? I search for a rc sailboat that I can transport with my bicicle.

' src=

Hi Annette, I too am looking for a 1 meter or 3 foot sailboat. Had a “Tradewinds” that was 3 feet long and loved it! BUT, the 5 pound center board weight (I used BB’s) was hard to find…. Want to get one so it can be sailed in the pond/small lake outside. A friend got one too and we used to “race”. But, we had no buoys – there are usually two or three and depends on the size of the boat.

In the Chicago area, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana (Munster), Michigan, and Florida (about 20 miles from Orlando) – we were lucky and I was sailing anywhere from 13′ to 45′ boats. People that did not know me were freaked out when I could sail.

Another boat makes sense here. And, if I had two, then another person can sail too. And, I can make buoys that are needed to race boats. Hmm, that is a good idea.

I am a former professional licensed Captain, sailboat dealer and racer who is now landlocked. Looking to start RC sailing, but prefer to identify key class associations, publications and such information to make sure there is a strong RC class or one design to guide me. Looking forward to guidance first, then back on the water the right way.

My 18-year-old sails 420s and Lasers competitively, and is now asking for a r/c sailboat for Christmas. He has never used one before, but thinks the idea sounds fun. He is engineer-minded, grew up rigging and racing. We live on a bay off the ocean. Can anyone recommend a r/c sailboat $300 or less?

' src=

I am sourcing an RC catamaran (3’+-) and would like suggestions. Thx.

' src=

what about a orion?

The 9 Best RC Boats for Racing Around Lakes, Riding Upstream, and Ripping Through Waves

Like sailing or speedboating, but tiny.

rc boat

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

RC boats come in lots of shapes, sizes, and styles, but the best models can shred water from afar without becoming sinking ships. We’ve rounded up the best remote-control boats for beach visits, lakefront races, poolside entertainment, and some advice on picking the best RC boat for you.

Stay in play and check out our picks for the best magnetic toys , remote-control trucks , and remote-control planes .

The Best RC Boats

  • Best Overall: Alpharev R308 RC Boat with Case
  • Best Value: Force1 Velocity H102
  • Best Bargain: Cheerwing RC Racing Boat
  • Best Upgrade: Pro Boat RC Blackjack 24"
  • Best Sailboat: Playsteam Voyager 400

What to Consider

While you can likely get away with using a larger RC boat on a pond or lake, you may want to stick to a smaller model if you’ll be floating yours in a backyard swimming pool or need to pack something tiny. RC boats can be up to two feet long, so make sure to consider the journey to the water, too, especially if the boat you’re eyeing doesn’t come with a carrying case.

Weight and Speed

The RC boat’s weight helps determine how fast it can move. Heavier boats are better equipped to move at high speeds without capsizing, whereas lighter boats can be speedy using less power, a.k.a., slower acceleration. Think of it like torque on a car (or a full-sized boat, for that matter)—the more power the boat gets from the battery, electric, or gas motor, the faster it can accelerate.

Speed is also dependent on the type of hull—some boats are shaped for optimal turning and curves, while others are built for picking up speed while driving in a straight line.

The priciest models can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. We mostly recommend recreational, battery-powered RC boats that reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour, since the more powerful, expensive models are meant for hardcore hobbyists and professional racers.

Capsize Recovery

Many RC boats have anti-capsize, or capsize recovery, functionality to prevent them from flipping over (and staying overturned). Flipping an RC boat is extremely easy, especially if you lack experience, and can lead to a sinking ship. If you’re new to RC boating, consider grabbing one with capsize recovery, making your boat rebalance and flip back over if it tips.

How We Selected

We researched each model’s speed, customer rating, durability, and unique features. We also consulted buying guides from several top hobbyist publications. We’ve picked options for every type of RC boat customer, whether you’re a casual hobbyist, buying a first boat for your kids, or you’re a dedicated RC enthusiast.

ALPHAREV RC Boat with Case R308

RC Boat with Case R308

This boat features an anti-capsize hull system, so if it tips over or gets hit by a wave, it’ll flip back over to recover. It also has LED lights installed to make it easy to see when it’s dark. Thanks to the autopilot mode that loops the boat into a figure-eight shape, children can easily use it, too.

The R308 comes with two batteries and two chargers, with users reporting approximately 20 minutes of power (counting both batteries) when operating the boat at full speed. It has a 400-foot signal range for distance driving and tops at 20 miles per hour. With its carry case, the R308 is a solid RC boat for most users.

Force1 Velocity H102

Velocity H102

This boat reaches speeds of 20-plus miles per hour, making it great for anyone who wants their toy to fly on the water. This boat features a capsize recovery mode, a water-cooled engine, and a double-hatched body, making it easier to control on waves. The charge time is a little long, three to four hours, but it can ride for up to 15 minutes at full power.

Customers say this boat reaches top speed fairly quickly, though some report that the controller is difficult to use and not very responsive. Still, it handles well on the water and is a super speedy boat.

Pro Boat RC Jet Boat Blackjack 24"

RC Jet Boat Blackjack 24"

A critical favorite, the Blackjack 24 is one smooth RC boat. It handles well with a very responsive controller, takes turns quickly, and according to one critic, it remains stable even at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Its bright color also makes it easy to see while it’s out on the water, so you’ll never lose track of it.

Customers report roughly 15 to 20 minutes of playtime, and many say it’s surprisingly fast and responsive. One customer also says that although it’s an experienced hobby-grade toy, it’s very intuitive to operate.

DEERC RC Boat with LED Light

RC Boat with LED Light

This is an excellent option for anyone eager to get into RC boating but unsure of their prowess on the water. It features two autopilot modes, so there’s plenty of opportunity to learn how to use it. It also has an extended playtime of 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to practice.

With features like capsize recovery, double hatch design, and low-battery and signal alarms, this boat is pretty much goof proof, making it the perfect boat for beginners on their way to becoming enthusiasts.

Altair Aerial AA102 RC Boat

AA102 RC Boat

If you need a well-rounded RC boat, this one has ample protection, zippy speeds, and excellent customer service, all in one attractive package. Its anti-capsize feature prevents it from tipping over, while several users say its nose bumper saved their boats from getting totaled through crashing.

It has an extra battery for more playtime, and several users say it provides up to 20 minutes of action after swapping it. Users who experienced issues with their boats were able to find replacement parts and products thanks to the company’s customer service help. Others say that it’s a terrific value, though the lack of a carry case is disappointing.

Gizmovine RC Boat

RC Boat

This Gizmovine RC boat is a solid entry for children due to its capsize recovery, double-hatch protection against internal water damage, and easy-to-read LCD controller display. Many users say the boat’s excellent for children under 10, and its speed of up to 20 mph is perfect for controlling on the water.

While some say its battery life is too short, the controller features a low-battery warning for when it’s time to swap them out—plus it comes with two. The boat’s claimed speed is quick, but a slower pace can preserve battery life and provide a steady ride for children.

User reviews also say it’s perfect for the pool or a small lake where it’s easy to retrieve.

VOLANTEXRC Brushless RC Boat

Brushless RC Boat

If you need speed and don’t mind investing more money into your hobby, this boat is fantastic. The fastest model on this list, this boat has a top speed of 40 miles per hour, a range of up to 656 feet, and a water-cooled system that prevents the motor from overheating.

It also has safety features to prevent damage from the high speeds, like waterproofing and a one-piece hull to prevent cracks.

The biggest flaw is its lack of capsize recovery, and several users say their boats flipped in action, causing them to swim out to retrieve their toys. It also only comes with one battery.

Cheerwing RC Racing Boat

RC Racing Boat

Cheerwing RC boats are fantastic if you’re looking for an affordable toy to race with your friends. This boat can hit up to 15 miles per hour and has some great features, including capsize recovery and automatic yaw correction, which rebalances your boat. It also signals when the battery is low or starts to lose signal, giving you peace of mind.

If you want to try RC boating without spending much, this is a solid buy. Its biggest downside is in its battery life—just six to eight minutes per charge—and it doesn’t come with the option to buy a second battery, so it requires frequent recharging.

PLAYSTEAM Voyager 400 RC Sailboat

Voyager 400 RC Sailboat

If sailing is your preference, the Voyager 400 is the way to go. Rather than rely on an electric motor to push it forward, the Voyager 400 can sail in any body of water via wind power. Its remote controls the rudder and the propulsion, and just in case wind isn’t in the forecast, it comes with a detachable motor to help propel it.

Customers say it’s easy to use, and everything is sealed to keep interior components dry when it tips over. Its rechargeable remote battery can work for up to one hour, which puts most RC speedboats to shame. A drawback, however, is that if it gets stuck at sea without the motor attached, you’ll have to wait for it to wash ashore.

Buying Guide Questions

Below are answers to some of the questions that usually come up as regards RC sailboats. It will help you make more informed decisions concerning RC sailboats as well as know where you can take the fun to among other stuff.

What size servo for one meter RC sailboat?

The prominent servo that is present in RC sailboats is the sail servo and there are two styles of sail servos, and you will likely find one of them in 1-meter RC sailboats. They are the sail winch servo and the sail arm servo.

Related: Wondering what the difference is with RC Hovercrafts? Then check out our guide on that topic.

The sail winch servo has a drum like wheel that houses the sail line. The rotation of the drum controls the length of the sail line that is being released or brought in. The main advantage of this sail servo is its small space requirement compared to the other sail servo. It can bring in the total sail line length in roughly three revolutions. However, its reaction time can be slow at times.

The sail arm servo utilizes a long arm to draw the sail line or release it. Its response time is quicker compared to the sail winch servo. It can be used alongside standard servo.

What causes RC sailboat to tip?

Various factors can cause an RC sailboat to tip. Top among these factors is weather conditions . An RC sailboat can tip if it encounters a harsh wind along with heavy rainfall.

Other factors can be mechanical failures, which usually occur as a result of some parts of the RC sailboat failing, or get damaged. If the sailboat collides with another sailboat or obstacle, it may also cause it to tip, this would of course not happen with RC Submarines or RC underwater drones , but those are typically more costly.

What is the length of a certified racing RC sailboat?

Various racing RC sailboats come with different lengths. However, to enter some competitions they have to meet the certified length requirement of the regulating body. World Sailing is the body that governs sailing as a sport around the world and they have a standardized length for sailboats of different classes.

For racing RC sailboats, the certified length is 1,000 mm (1 meter). This is also regarded as the hull length of the boat.

How to paint an RC sailboat?

It is usually fun to see RC sailboats with impressive patterns and colors different from their original manufacturer design. Most of these sailboats are products of extra work put in by the owners to identify their boats as well as give it an appealing aesthetic view of their choice. There is no harm in wanting to add some spice to your RC sailboat, however, it is important to know how to go about it.

There are various ways people take to paint their sailboats, however, learning people who already have experience in painting sailboats because this will save you a lot of stress, and ensure that you have for yourself a lasting design.

The first thing to do is to draw the pattern of whatever design you want on your boat, then tape areas that need taping using a masking tape that pulls off cleanly after paint without distorting the paint lines. Cover the areas that you don’t want the paint to touch, then apply the spray paint on the boat. Ensure that the paint is well dried before removing the tape.

How do RC sailboats work?

The traditional sailboat does not work like the conventional boat, and this is the same for RC sailboats. That is why is essential to understand how they work before setting out to sail.

Unlike the conventional sailboat, all you have to do to control this sailboat is to use the radio control system where is a feedback mechanism between the transmitter and the receiver. There are two major components of the sailboat that are responsible for steering and moving the sailboat forward; these respective components are the rudder and sail trim.

RC sailboats utilize wind energy to move the boat on water. It does this by redirecting the wind or capturing a sizable amount of wind, enough to propel it forward. To accomplish this, the sailor has to ensure that the sail trim is adjusted properly in the direction that allows it to capture enough wind and move forward. The sail servo controls the degree to which a sail will swing using lines that are attached to the sail. The shorter the line, the fewer the degrees the sail is allowed to sway, and vice versa.

The rudder on the other hand is used to steer the sailboat in different directions. There is a servo that actuates the rudder of the sailboat to accomplish this after the radio system of the sailboat has received an input signal from the controller.

Understanding how a normal sailboat works may be the key to you having a long-lasting time with your RC sailboat. Also, it is essential to always go for products with good quality to prevent avoidable disappointments.

Expert Tips for RC Sailboat Enthusiasts

Maintenance and care guidelines for rc sailboats.

  • Cleaning : Regularly clean your RC sailboat after each sailing session. Use fresh water to rinse off any saltwater or debris that may have accumulated on the boat and sails. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the materials.
  • Drying : After cleaning, ensure the sailboat is thoroughly dried before storage. Moisture trapped inside the boat, spars, or on sails can lead to mold and deterioration over time.
  • Storage : Store your RC sailboat in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. You might want to use a boat stand to support the hull and prevent warping.
  • Battery Care : Take care of the boat’s battery by following the manufacturer’s charging and storage guidelines. Avoid overcharging, and if the boat won’t be used for an extended period, ensure the battery is stored partially charged.
  • Lubrication : Check the moving parts, such as the rudder and winch mechanisms, and apply appropriate lubrication to ensure smooth operation.
  • Hull Inspection : Periodically inspect the hull for any cracks, chips, or damage. Repair any issues promptly to prevent water from entering the hull.
  • Sail Inspection : Examine the sails for tears or fraying along the edges. Small tears can be repaired with sail tape, while larger damage may require professional sail repairs.

Sailing Tips for Better Performance and Enjoyment

  • Wind Awareness: Pay close attention to the wind direction and strength. Learn to read the water’s surface for wind patterns, and adjust your sailing technique accordingly.
  • Tacking and Jibing : Practice tacking (turning the bow through the wind) and jibing (turning the stern through the wind) to efficiently navigate the sailboat and maintain good speed.
  • Sail Trim : Properly adjust the sail’s angle and tension to maximize its efficiency. Experiment with different sail settings to find the optimal trim for various wind conditions.
  • Nosediving : If your RC boat is nosediving when sailing downwind , you may be overpowered. If you have a smaller rig, then you may want to change it so that you can better control your boat.
  • Avoid Obstacles : Be mindful of obstacles such as rocks, buoys, wharves, and other boats while sailing to prevent collisions that could damage your sailboat.
  • Learn from Others : Engage with the RC sailboat community, either in person or online, to learn from experienced sailors and exchange valuable tips and tricks.

Troubleshooting Common Issues and How to Address Them

  • Unresponsive Controls : If your sailboat’s controls become unresponsive, check the batteries in both the boat and the remote control. Ensure they are properly charged and installed.
  • Drifting Off Course : If your sailboat constantly drifts off course, check the rudder alignment and make sure it moves freely. Adjust the rudder angle as needed for better control.
  • Sails Not Catching Wind : If the sails are not catching wind effectively, check for any obstructions or entanglements. Adjust the sail trim and position to optimize wind capture.
  • Water Leakage : If you notice water inside the hull, inspect for cracks or loose fittings. Apply waterproof sealant to potential entry points to prevent further leakage.
  • Low Battery Warning : Pay attention to low battery warnings from your sailboat’s remote control system. Avoid pushing the battery to its limits and return to shore promptly if the battery is running low.

The Choice of the Best RC Sailboat is Yours

Radio-controlled sailing boats are far from toys as they are built to be authentic miniatures (from 1/4 to 1/40 scale) of normal-sized racing boats. These smaller toy sailboat versions are popular with collectors and sailing enthusiasts but have in recent years become the focus of regular RC sailboat racing events held at an increasing number of clubs around the country. These races take place in lakes, ponds, and harbors, and can be just for fun or as competitive as the full-sized racing already is.

Unfortunately, not all of these products are available on Amazon, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find them elsewhere… so have a look around and you might find one.

The quality construction of remote-controlled sailboats makes them strong and durable which means that a good quality small-scale boat will give you years of racing enjoyment. With the many varieties and styles already available, you can rest assured that you will be able to find something that you’re your style and budget. And with the growing popularity of the sport, who knows… maybe RC sailboat racing will one day become an Olympic-caliber sport.

Choose POCO DIVO Compass RG65, and let your sailing experience be fun.

Lightweight and Fast

Let’s have a closer look at the design and materials of this RC sailboat since these very features influence its performance. Made of ABS plastic, POCO DIVO Compass RG65 weighs only 3 pounds but don’t let this information make you doubt its performance. Thanks to a smooth sophisticated bow, it reaches great speed in no time and is on par with its heavy professional rivals. This model boasts waterproof feature which means all electric details of the boat including servo and receiver batteries are protected from the detrimental influence of water. Then there are the sails. Besides being water-resistant, they are also quite durable and can withstand strong wind. If you’re looking for a reliable, lightweight, and easy-to-control RC sailboat, this model from POCO DIVO will definitely meet your requirements.

Get Ready for Regatta

One more feature of this RC sailboat we’d like to point out is its operating frequency of 2.4 GHz. As it was mentioned above, this frequency allows you to use a sailboat in close proximity to several other models. As for this very control system, it creates interference-resistant radio waves that give you a chance to compete with up to 20 other racers without any performance loss.

If you’re going to spend your weekend taking part in long-distance racing, it’s recommended to take extra batteries with you. Having changed them between racing sessions, you’ll have stronger radio signal. Plus, it’s unlikely they will die out when you least expect.

DragonFlite DF95 Class

First-class sailing experience.

The DragonFlite DF95 is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the people behind it advertise as one of the most complete offers on the market. And they aren't necessarily wrong as just about everything needed for sail comes with the package and we will get to that "everything" in but a moment.

On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to include a receiver, transmitter, and batteries to that package now, would it? Sure, those are easy to purchase on your own, but you can't really say that your product is ready to use straight out of the box if it doesn't include the aforementioned parts.

Having said that, this little ship has a lot going for it and we feel confident placing it so high up on our list. The company says that it's been developed according to the latest radio sailing design concepts, construction, and components that are required for a truly first-class radio sailing experience. And, for the most part, we're inclined to agree.

The Right Components

So, as for those cutting-edge components that you wouldn't find in the majority of other RC sailboats, we would most like to start with the carbon fiber keel fin and an advanced design keel bulb. That said, the keel step and the one-piece carbon must deserve just as much recognition and so do the Mylar sails, arguably the best sails on the market right now. We could also talk about the zinc alloy ballast, especially about its optimal bulb shape and a flat tail.

But we would so much rather focus on what all of these components add up to. And what they add up is an RC ship that was perfectly designed to be of a convenient size, both on and off the water. Though the model is lightweight, its long, narrow hull gives it the sort of light wind performance that most other RC yachts could never replicate.

Dominate the Competition

Generally speaking, this kind of lightweight design would lead to an inability to perform in strong winds. But that isn't the case here.

Sure, like every other RC boat, it can get overpowered from time to time. But even when that happens, the model still remains easily controllable to windward. It has virtually no tendency to "nosedive" and always gives you great speed downwind.

To rephrase our earlier point, the people behind the DragonFlite DF95 have set to provide their customers with a first-rate sailing experience and we'd say they did a pretty good job of that. Just pick out a radio, a set of batteries, and a receiver and you'll be ready to dominate the next RC sailboat racing competition. Whether it is the fastest or the smallest model is up for debate (though it is certainly up there) but it is definitely one of the most maneuvrable RC sailboats out there.

Everything is Under Your Control

Unlike the majority of RC sailboats that move only on sails, Golden Bright model is equipped with a motor. This very peculiarity gives you a chance to enjoy sailing your boat when the weather is calm. Control features are worth mentioning, too. Radio signals are transmitted at 27 MHz frequency that provides operating range of up to 160 feet. Both transmitter and receiver work on batteries (1x 9V for the transmitter and 4x AA for the receiver) and, what is more important, you can use either rechargeable or primary batteries to run your vehicle. The only thing to keep in mind is that they should be fully charged if you don’t want your sailboat to stop in the middle of the pond during a regatta.

Rage RC B1300 Eclipse 1M

Value package.

There are a few things we like about the Rage RC B1300 Eclipse. And though its 1-meter hull is definitely one of those "things", that's not where we'd like to start. At the end of the day, it all starts with a package and here, you get real value out of that package.

Just about everything you need to get started is already there. The model arrives with the majority of the most difficult and time-consuming rigging already completed, so the final assembly should be about as quick and hassle-free as it gets.

On top of the big pre-trimmed decorated hull, the package includes a 2.4GHz radio system, rip-stop nylon sails, and, as we've said earlier, all of the rigging parts you need to build the mast as quickly and effortlessly as possible.

Hell, you even get a Li-ion receiver battery with a USB charger, 4 AA batteries necessary for the transmitter, and a nice little boat stand that you can use for maintenance and display. Nevertheless, some would say that the best part is that, despite the boat's size, you can just as quickly and easily dismantle it for storage and transportation.

Review of Rage RC B1300 Eclipse 1M Ready to Run Sailboat

Imposing Size With Attention to Details

Of course, no matter how complete the package, it wouldn't be worth much without a proper boat. Fortunately, calling the B1300 Eclipse a proper boat would be quite an understatement. There's a lot to this boat that makes it stand out from its little ship crowd but perhaps its most attractive feature is the size.

The large-scale model measure over 7-feet (213 centimeters) tall from the very bottom of the ballast bulb all the way to the tip of the mast. The impressive size makes this RC sailboat look imposing and eye-catching enough to attract at least a few jealous glimpses from the crowd at the next race.

But, despite its massive profile, the boat is surprisingly elegant. Part of it is the attention to the details that's a bit difficult to put into words. But another part of it is the quality of the build that's a little easier to describe.

Rage RC B1300 Eclipse 1M Ready to Run Sailboat in the use

A Looker With Second-to-None Performance

So, what is it that constitutes a quality build? Well, here, it mostly lies with the aforementioned 1-meter hull. Aside from its size, the hull stands out thanks to its precision blow-molded high-strength ABS construction. That said, the durable, reinforced rip-stop nylon sails are just as important. Aside from their rugged composition, the sails come with bright, attractive graphics, another little detail that adds appearance points.

Finally, let's talk about the model's performance. Oddly enough, it starts with the sealed, water-resistant deck hatch. Though it isn't directly responsible for performance, the deck hatch plays an important role by protecting internal electronic components, including the "drum-style" sail winch servo. Thanks to its protection, the servo gives you extra power and smooth, scale-like functionality that you simply don't get out of regular servos.

Bottom line, the Rage RC B1300 Eclipse is about as impressive and imposing as RC sailboats get without diving into the actual full-scale yacht territory. Under its stunning appearance, the model hides superb electronic components that make this boat not just a looker but an instant title contender at any competition.

Kyosho Fortune 612-III Sailboat RC

Realistic copy.

If watching sailboat racing gives you a thrill, maybe it's time to try it for yourself? Dive into the world of RC racing with Kyosho Fortune 612-III. This model resembles authentic vehicles that take part in American sailboat racing cup, and tiny details such as rigging winches, helms, and crew figurines make it look even more realistic. Just like most RC boats, this one is sold preassembled, and to start using it, you only need to attach mast, sails, and keel. By the way, installation of these parts doesn’t require any tools, so you won’t spend much time on preparation for the sailing session. As soon as all parts are assembled, insert batteries inside a transmitter and a receiver, and let your Kyosho sailboat impress you with its performance.

Reach High Speed in No Time

Kyosho Fortune 612-III shows great results on water due to its design and the materials it’s made of. The high-quality plastic of the hull, aluminum mast, and waterproof PE (polyethylene) sails ensure the sailboat durability while sporty design allows Kyosho to move faster. By the way, Fortune 612-III moves solely on sails big enough to catch wind force and develop high speed. Finally, there is simple control of the sailboat carried out with two levers located on the transmitter. Choose Kyosho Fortune 612-III RC sailboat and enjoy the combination of style, performance, and reliability in one device.

Interference-Free Control

Same as many other models, this Kyosho Fortune is equipped with an RC system so it can be used out-of-the-box. The transmitter operates on 2.4 GHz frequency that creates interference-resistant radio signals, making it possible for you to sail your boat successfully even if you participate in the regatta. The receiver is two servos aimed at controlling the sails and the rudder. Note that you need to buy 12 AA batteries (4 for a transmitter and 8 for the boat) for the vehicle to actually move. Don't forget to check on charge before using batteries since it determines the quality of radio signals.

Useful to Remember

If you take a closer look at this model and some of its rivals, you'll notice that its weight is quite light and its keel isn't very large. Bear this in mind when you plan your sailing session; also, it might be better to avoid racing if weather forecast predicts strong wind.

What Is an RC Sailboat?

Today the world of remote controlled vehicles is so diverse anyone can find something to his/her liking. Cars , planes, helicopters , tanks and other vehicles have made their way to the world of miniature replicas, offering hobbyists a huge collection of models to select from. In this article we bring to focus RC sailboats, small replicas of real boats that are immensely popular both with kids and with grown-ups. For anyone not versed enough on the tech specs that are crucial for choosing a remote-controlled sailboat, this review contains the important guidance that can make your choice less tricky.

It may sound a bit silly but there's actually a lot that goes into these "toys". From the differences in design and construction to competitive RC sail boating, they combine the excitement of any other competition with the technical/building aspect of DIY projects. Plus, they can make for a great father-son (or any other combination of family members, boats don't discriminate) bonding activity.

What Features to Compare

Buying an RC sailboat, pay attention to its  size and weight  first since these parameters determine who this or that model is best for. Small and lightweight boats are a great choice for kids or novices in RC sailing as they are more maneuverable and easier to control. Professional hobbyists love bigger and heavier models; of course, they may be difficult to handle but sailing them will surely add to your experience and will bring a lot of positive emotions.

Next, find out whether the model you want to purchase is equipped with a motor . In general, the majority of RC sailboats represented on the market don’t have a motor. They move with the help of the wind and sails, and the bigger the sails are the faster your vehicle speeds up. However, it’s rather difficult to make your boat move when the weather is calm. For this reason, some manufacturers equip their models with a motor to give you a chance to enjoy RC sailing even in windless conditions.

Finally, take notice of control features that consist of several factors:

  • Radio system can be included in the box or you need to buy it separately.
  • Operating frequency of controllers is either 2.4 GHz or 27 MHz. The former one is considered to be the best option for RC sailing. It creates interference-resistant radio signals that allow you to compete against several race participants. The latter frequency creates signals that suffice for competitions, however, can be subjected to interference.
  • Don’t overlook operating range of a controller. If you’re going to take part in long-distance racing, you’ll probably want to choose the model that boasts the greatest range.
  • Power source of radio transmitters and receivers is either AA or rechargeable batteries. Both types do the job great, and choosing between them is just a matter of preference.

Q: Is it easy to handle an RC sailboat? A: Actually, it is. Of course, if you’ve never handled any of RC vehicles before, it’ll take you some time to learn the basics. First, you’ll need to find out what an RC sailboat is, how to assemble it, the principle of its operation, and some electronics stuff. As soon as you know this, you can start practicing. In general, you’ll spend from several hours to a couple of days before you feel comfortable while handling an RC boat.

Q: Is it OK if water gets inside the hull? A: Taking into account the fact that RC sailboats are used on the water, it’s quite a normal occurrence. If you’re afraid the water will damage servos or batteries on the boat, worry not! RC sailboat manufacturers take care of safety issues and create hulls with water-resistant materials.

Q: I’ve assembled my sailboat and inserted batteries, but it doesn’t seem to work. What should I do? A: More often than not, batteries are the main reason of sailboat malfunction, so the first thing you want to do to solve the problem is take several steps:

  • Mak e sure the batteries are fully charged.
  • Check whether you positioned them right.
  • For proper operation, turn on the transmitter, and only then, a receiver on your boat.

If you’ve followed the instructions above but your RC model still doesn’t work, address the manufacturer for assistance.

Q: Can my boat tip over or sink? What do I do in this case? A: Well, everything’s possible, and such unpleasant occurrences aren’t an exception. However, if one of them happened, you can save your favorite RC sailboat with a rescue boat (if you have it). Otherwise, you can swim to the place of an accident and get it from the water on your own.

Q: Can RC sailing help me handle a real vehicle? A: To some extent, yes. Even if you control your RC model standing on the shore, you still understand some essentials, for example how the boat moves or what measures should be taken to overcome this or that problem (strong wind, large waves). If you try to handle a real vehicle after running an RC one, you’ll already know what steps to take to direct your sailboat the way you need.

Q: What kind of boat is more difficult to maintain – with or without a motor? A:  Both sailboat types are easy to maintain. All you need to do to keep your RC sailboat in proper condition is rinse and wipe it with a dry cloth, remove all detachable parts, and store it on a special stand. You can also put a cover over it to prevent dust from gathering on its surface. The only thing to keep in mind is to protect the motor from bumps and falls since they can lead to its malfunction or breakage.

Choosing The Best RC Sailboat – 10 Questions To Ask

RC sailboats are a great hobby, as they can allow you and your family to enjoy spending time together, learn about boats, and get some exercise. Some people who are just starting out with RC sailboats may not know what to look for when they are purchasing a boat.  In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the things that you need to consider when choosing an RC sailboat.

In choosing the best rc sailboat, you’ll need to consider such things as where do you want to sail, what type of hull and sails do you need, will you be racing, what’s your budget, should you have a motor, and do you want a ready to sail boat, or a kit.

1. Where Do You Want to Sail Your RC Sailboat?

2. type of hull, 3. type of sails, 4. will you be racing, 5. what’s your budget, 6. portability, 7. what ancilliary equipment do you need, 8. do you want it to look like a full size yacht, 9. should it have a motor, 10. would you enjoy making the rc sailboat from a kit.

When you’re shopping for your first rc sailboat or looking for an upgrade, you may be overwhelmed by the number of choices available. How do you know which one to buy?

Well, you can start by asking yourself a few simple questions. Do you want a rc sailboat that’s good for racing, or do you want one that’s designed for casual sailing? How important is durability to you? And how much portability do you need? Are you looking to stay within a certain budget, or can you spend more? With so many options, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and make mistakes you’ll live to regret, so we’ve put together this list of things to look for when shopping for your first sailboat.

The best places to sail an rc sailboat are inland lakes and ponds. These calm bodies of water allow for smoother sailing, and allow for easier retrieval if things go wrong. Most rc sailboats are made to not handle rough waters, so it is best to avoid sailing them in the ocean.

If you do – some people enjoy sailing their rc sailboats at the beach and in the ocean – be prepared to rescue your boat from an outgoing tide or rough waves. Its advisable to look for rc sailboats which are extensively waterproofed on the deck, and perhaps even have inboard electric motors.

When looking for a quality RC sailboat, the first thing you should look at is the hull of the boat. The hull of the boat is the main part of the boat that will ploughing through the water, and it should be made out of a sturdy material. Hulls used to be made of wood, but most rc sailboats these days are made with hulls made from molded ABS plastic. These are light and very durable and relatively cheap.

There is also a choice in number of hulls: single, catamaran or trimaran. The Joysway Binary 400mm Mini Catamaran Sailboat (UK) is an example of a ready to sail rc sailboat with 2 hulls.

The hull will be fixed to a deep keel – Look out for a weighted keel, which will result in a much more stable sailing experience.

Most modern ready to sail rc sailboats come with polyester sails which are ready cut to fit. If you are buying your boat to race, you may want to buy a boat which allows different sail sizes and shapes to account for different wind conditions.

Racing rc yachts is very exciting and provides a whole new dimension to the hobby. There are, however, different considerations you must take into account, such as buying a specific rc boat type which is recognised as a racing class.

best rc sailboats

Whilst there are few ready to sail rc boats which readily fit into an international racing event, these can be bought. For example the Dragonforce 65 is in a popular racing category which can provide loads of fun to the amateur enthusiast.

If you do want to race, do make sure the boat you buy is in a popular category, so you will be assured of others to race against. Here is the Dragon 65 class racing:

The best way to further this aspect of the hobby is to join a club, details of which will be held with your local hobby shop, or check out a local club near you. You’ll find lots of help finding a club, as well as sailing your boat, at the  American Model Yachting Association and the Model Yachting Association in the UK.

The official body overseeing rc sailboat racing internationally is the  International Radio Sailing Association .

For more details on this, click here .

On the other hand, you may be only interested in casual sailing at the weekend. Your choice of rc sailboat in that case is wider and not confined to a particular model type.

The cost of rc sailboats start at $80 (£80) and can stretch to $500 or more for specialised boats. For a good all rounder, which falls into a popular racing category (if you do wish to race) such as the 65 category, you should expect to pay around $300 (or £250).

This should buy you all the gear, including transmitter, receiver and batteries.

How are you going to be transporting your boat? If you have to go by car, make sure that the mast/sails, and maybe the keel, are collapsable to get them in the car. If you walk to the local park pond, you may want to get a trolley for the boat, which could also double up as a stand to rig the boat at the water’s edge.

If you have other rc models, whether they are boats, planes or drones, you may already have some of the required equipment, such as the transmitter, batteries and the receiver, which could be adapted for the nautical world. This will obviously depend on the details of the equipment, and the type of models you already have. At the very least, the transmitter, if it’s a modern one using 2.4 GHz frequency, could well be adapted for use with an off the shelf, ready to sail, boat.

There are some beautiful model sailboats which are scale models of the full sized yacht, but these tend to be either kit built, and/or very expensive. The detail displayed, including model crew, is fascinating, but you may want to consider how robust such scale models are; they may not stand up to rough weather and handling over the lifetime of the model, depending on where you are sailing.

Such models maybe best left on the mantelpiece or window cill, and admired for their beauty.

An inboard motor in an rc sailboat is not common, but they are found in the more expensive models. The great benefit is that it will be easier to retrieve the yacht if it’s becalmed, or the wind is taking it further from shore with no hope of return.

There are a great variety of rc sailboat kits available to buy, but some are complicated and require a lot of work. That in itself may be the pleasure in getting involved in this hobby, rather than the actual sailing, and if you feel this may be you, look for a kit, such as the Lightning Sailboat or the Dumas Ace Sloop .

Otherwise you should be looking for a ready to sail, pre-assembled boat, such as the IBalody Creative Remote Control Sailboat (US & UK).

So with so many sailboats available, it can be really tough to choose the right one, but hopefully we’ve helped you think about what you actually want in an rc sailboat. If you want to know more about rc sailing, and see a wider choice of recommended rc boats, click here .

1. PLAYSTEM Voyager 400 RC - Best RC sailboat for the money

dji-mini-2-table-img

The Voyager 400 RC sailboat is one of the most popular on Amazon for a reason. Not only does it offer great value for money, but it's ideal for both beginners and intermediate users alike.

The boat stands 26.5 inches tall from bottom of keel to the top of the mast, with a 21-inch rise above the water surface, while its width measures 100mm exactly. With just some batteries and a gust of wind, you'll be ready to set sail - though you may want to avoid major waves and winds over 15mph. Voyager 400RC can be used in saltwater as well, as long as the conditions allow for it.  If you're just starting with this hobby and you want to try out a serious, sturdy and rather cheap boat, the Voyager 400 RC is absolutely perfect for you.

2.Rage Eclipse 650 (RC B1302) - Ideal for intermediates

The Rage RC Eclipse 650 sailboat is the perfect ride for any sailing enthusiast, whether they're just starting out or have been at it for years. The ABS hull is blow molded to ensure durability while the pre-applied trim design gives a full-sized sailboat look when out on the lake. There's even some convenience thrown in with this model since it arrives partially pre-rigged and ready to get on the water quickly!

The Eclipse 650 has a 17g drum-style winch servo which provides power and smoother, more scale like operation than conventional servos. From the box you'll find everything you need - 2.4GHz interference free radio system, 4 AA batteries for the transmitter and 4 for powering servos, plus an easy to assemble display stand to show off your new sailboat when not in use. With some final assembly, you'll be able to take your RC boat out on a breeze across your local pond or lake with ease!

3.PLAYSTEAM Voyager 280 - Best cheap RC sailboat you can find (Under $100)

The Voyager 280 is the only RC sailing boat you can find that doesn't break the $100 pricepoint.

Compact in size and easy to use, this little boat stands at 17.5 inches tall and can be operated without any license. Just make sure to install 4AA batteries for the transmitter and charge its LiPo battery via its port in the back of the transmitter, which usually takes about 15 minutes.

Remember to check out conditions before hitting those waves - while it's perfect for light winds, we don't recommend using it in gusty winds or above 15mph.

To access its interior, simply turn its "table" on deck 90 degrees to unlock its hatch latch from the deck below it.

If you're ready for a great adventure out on the water, then grab your gear and let this little boat show you what's possible!

  • Compact in size and easy to use
  • Can be operated without any license
  • Not able to handle major waves and winds

What's the best transmitter for RC sailboats?

My following two recommendations are 2 great compact drones that are quite silent and also small enough to travel with and not stand out as annoying.

Thankfully, all the RC saiboats in this ranking come with a transmitter included, so you don't need to worry about it. Other models won't, but... well, other models are not included in this ranking.  There isn't the absolute best transmitter for all sailing boats. But pretty much any good 2.4 GHz RC controller with the proper channels will do the trick.

What are RC sailboats and how expensive do they get? RC sailboats are remote-controlled sailboats that are used by hobbyists and professionals alike for recreation, racing, and even rescue operations. Powered exclusively by wind, these boats are generally unmotorized and can come in various sizes. The price range is between $100 and $250 for the "hobby" level versions.   Getting into this hobby is not that hard, but when it comes to any type of RC boat, you must make sure you're having plenty of room on a lake or any other large water surface.

I won't be dwelling for much on how to start the hobby, because if you're already looking for the best RC Sailboat, you might have figured out these things for yourself. How does an RC Sailboat work?

There are two types of RC boats you might be thinking of:

  • RC motorized boats
  • RC boats with sails

The difference between these two is obvious, and they have completely different operation plans.  If you have an RC boat, you will rely on the motors all the time.  An RC sailboat requires you to maneuver and speed it up using just the sails and the power of the wind. It's not that easy!

You'll be controlling only the rudder (this controls the direction of the boat in the water) and the sail trim that adjusts the angle of the sails and how much your boat is influenced by the wind blowing.

Where can I race an RC Sailboat?

Harnessing the power of the wind seems like a pretty bad idea in a world where there are already waterproof electrical motors, but this is not made for efficiency, but rather as a hobby that requires going with the flow of nature. You can have fun with these awesome toys either in a pool, pond or even on bigger lakes. Most of them are "saltwater ready", but waves might give you a hard time if it's too windy.

What to look for in a Sailboat?

A good sailboat should have good equilibrium and not tip over in stronger winds. They should also come with tow lines and be made out of good enough materials so that water won't get inside easily.

A few other important factors that not many people think of when buying one are:

  • How good is the sail material
  • How responsive  the rudde r is ( how easily it steers left or right)
  • If it has any weak spots that can break without repair
  • Size and how easy it is to carry around

What do I do if my RC sailboat tips?

This shouldn't be a reason to worry if you're using it in normal conditions.

None of the models I presented should ever tip over in safe conditions and without holes in the hull or being hit by something else.

If your RC sailboat tips, turn off the radio controller and use your tow line, a boat or swim to retrieve it.

Are RC boats a good gift idea for children?

Sure, if your kid is passionate about sailboats, it could be an awesome gift, but otherwise these boats are rather hard to maneuver. So I don't recommend gifting an RC sail boat to a children unless they know how to use it.

How should you properly store an RC boat when you're not using it?

Storing an RC sailboat when you're not using it is important to ensure its longevity and performance. Here are some tips to keep your sailboat in great condition when storing:

  • Make sure to clean off any dirt or dust from the RC sailboat with a soft cloth before putting it into storage.
  • Store your boat in a dry place that is not affected by direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
  • For extra protection against moisture damage, you can place your sailboat inside a plastic bag with desiccants before storing.
  • It's also key to make sure the battery and all other electronic components are completely drained before storing - this will reduce the chances of corrosion occurring and damaging the vehicle.
  • To prevent paint chips and scratches, make sure that multiple boats are not touching each other when stored together.

RC Sailboats

Remote controlled sailboats use the natural wind for movement and the user controls the boats steering and positioning of sails with a radio transmitter. RC sailboats come in a wide variety of options, including electric motors, which can be valuable when the wind dies down or better maneuverability back to shore or to your boat.

Best RC Sailboats

RC sailing is a fun hobby, I particularly enjoy it when I want to sit back in a chair, relax, but still want to play with something RC. There is something inspiring about letting the wind take your boat across the lake or the pond. Get some gusts of wind and you can have a pretty exciting day maneuvering your boat around the waves and when a gust comes seeing the boat take off into the wind.

Finding the best RC Sailboats on the market has gotten pretty tough. Many other sites just recommend the top they find quickly on Amazon, but truly, many are good, they just require a bit of extra work.

To be perfectly honest, any boat will need some maintenance or work done whether it is a cheap boat or very expensive. The sails on these can produce lots of push which can pull glued on riggings off, tighten lines, snap things, etc. This doesn’t happen often, but when you read reviews about a snapped line or plastic part, of course when you have a 4′ tall sail and a gust comes it can cause something to go wrong.

Due to many manufacturers exiting the market either through bankruptcy or leaving certain niches of the hobby, the number of RC sailboats on the market has become very limited. As I did the research for this article, it almost saddened me seeing so many players gone from the market. Anyways, enough rambling, let’s get into it.

There are a few good sailboats on the market, but buying new is limited, that’s why I also suggest you also expand your search for used boats on eBay.

Kyosho Seawind

best rc sailboat

The Kyosho Seawind is a great boat that comes RTR from the factory including a 2.4Ghz radio waterproof high torque sail servo, as well as a waterproof rudder servo.

The ballast in the boat is environmentally friendly, lead-free as well as removable for easy transportation. In fact, the mast, keel, and ballast are easily removable without tools.

The boat is 39″ long, about 8.9″ wide, and almost 73″ tall. If you do the math, that is over 6′ tall. This boat is HUGE. The boat can handle a good amount of wind if need be, but has a sail area large enough to sail great at even the slightest of wind speeds.

Kyosho is a brand that has been around for many years and can be trusted to keep replacement parts on the shelf for many more years to come.

This boat is a good beginner model as it comes ready to run, as well as a model for the more advanced sailor. The boat only needs 8AA batteries to get out on the water.

  • Sails great
  • Could be too large to transport for some users

Megatech Nirvana II

best rc sailboat

The Megatech Nirvana II is not made anymore, but it was one of the better boats on the market RTR. I currently own two as they are a blast to sail with or without friends.

This boat was the perfect beginner boat due to the simplicity of the boat as well as the great sailing abilities.

They have a heavy ballast on the bottom and have a very simple sail servo and rudder servo that make running it easy. This model measures in at 32″ long 65″ tall, and 7.75″ wide. The boat weighs in at 5.5 pounds with most of that in the ballast.

I have had no problem with my boats, but do believe if I stiffened up the servo area, that would allow me to be more precise in my sail control as it does tend to have some give in it.

The ballast disconnects for easy packing in a car or storage.

Sadly, Megatech does not manufacture this great boat anymore, but if you would like to find a used model, click here to run a search for this model on eBay. You won’t be sorry if this is your first or even your last boat.

  • Awesome Beginner Boat
  • Removable ballast
  • Not made anymore
  • Could use a stronger servo to control sails

Joysway Orion Sailboat

best rc sailboat

Joysway is one of the leading manufacturers when it comes to sailboats. They have slowed down production lately, but still have some great models. The Joysway Orion Sailboat is the younger brother to the very capable sailboat the DragonForce 65.

This boat measures in at 18″ long and 36″ high. This is the perfect boat to take on a trip due to its smaller size. The small size doesn’t mean you have lots of performance. This boat takes the wind and waves like its bigger brother.

Joysway includes an environmentally friendly zinc ballast, as well as good components such as fiberglass masts and booms.

Here is a very helpful in depth review with much more data and photos about this boat.

For a beginner, this boat will make anyone happy. Even for a more advanced sailor, this boat is fun as it is easy to pack around when traveling.

  • Great Beginner Boat
  • Smaller sized
  • May need some tinkering to work to its full potential

Kyosho Fortune 612

best rc sailboat

The Kyosho Fortune is similarly sized to the Joysway Orion but a bit larger. The boat is about 24″ long by 5.11″ wide and 44.68″ tall. The boat weighs in at 2.31 pounds.

This boat is the ReadySet model which includes a 2.4GHz radio, and two servos to get you sailing as soon as possible. This boat will require about 30 minutes of work to get it setup as it is not fully built at the factory to provide for a smaller shipping box. The good news about putting it together is that you will really learn how the boat works and operates to give you a leg up shall anything happen to it.

The Fortune is the perfect smaller sailboat to get around the pond, yet it is large enough to get through the lake. This model is readily available directly through Kyosho’s eBay store .

  • Ready to Run (RTR)
  • Good Quality
  • Needs some assembly

Joysway Binary

The Joysway Binary Catamaran Sailboat is truly a one of a kind boat. This boat reminds me of sailing Hobie Cats as a child, and from videos of it, it handles just like one.

The Binary is a smaller sailboat measuring in at almost 16″ long 10″ in width and about 22″ tall. The hull is made out of molded plastic and there is both a main sail and jib sail to propel this boat through the water.

This boat comes with a high quality 2.4GHz radio to help control it through the wind.

This boat sails a bit different than a monohull sailboat. This boat does not have a heavy ballast in the bottom, but it uses two hulls to balance. This boat can tip over and it won’t right side due to the dual hull configuration. You may want to have another rescue boat jut in case. Typically this won’t happen unless it is super windy or if you are experienced sailing, you should be able to correct it before it tips.

This boat has a good build quality, provides good protection from water for the electronics, and sails great. This model is for a more experienced sailor due to it being a multi hull and you may want some experience so you do not tip it over.

For a full in depth review, check out this article here.

  • Faster than a monohull of similar size
  • May need some tinkering around to get it to run perfectly
  • Can tip over leaving you stuck

Joysway Dragon Force 65

best rc sailboat

The Dragon Force 65 is a boat that was designed by sailing engineers from the ground up. The boat is good for the beginner as well as an advanced user.

The Dragon Force was originally released in 2013 and is currently on version 6 with its upgrades and variations. This boat is so popular, there is an ownership group dedicated to it as well as many clubs that use it as their standard racer.

This boat can be had in a RTR version or kit version leaving you to source your own parts. Depending on your level, either can fill your sailing void.

This boat is about 25.5″ long, 4.5″ wide, and 36″ tall. By no means is this the biggest boat, but it is a top performer. The hull is a molded ABS with a zinc alloy removable ballast.

This boat is sure to please the beginner boater as well as the more advanced racer. If you want bigger, this boat has a bigger brother, the Dragon Force 95.

  • Aftermarket Support
  • Has Nationwide Clubs
  • Designed by sailing engineers
  • None that we can find.

RC Laser Sailboat

The RC Laser Sailboat has been in production since 1994 and has sold over 22,000 models. From opening the box, this boat is ready to sail in 5 minutes. Like the Dragon Force 65, this boat also has its own sailing class .

This boat has a blow molded polypropylene hull with a molded fin keel and lead ballast. The electronics that come standard are class approved waterproof and the radio is a 2.4GHz model. This boat will need 12AA batteries to be water ready.

This boat comes with a B sail, but has A, B, C, and D sails available for different conditions. This is a single sail boat so there is no jib.

The hull is 41.5″ long, 13.5″ wide, and 73″ tall, and about 9 pounds so this is a LARGE boat. This boat has many accessories such as sails, cases, and parts available and there is plenty of support.

  • Ready to sail in 5 minutes
  • Lots of support
  • Lots of information online
  • This is a LARGE boat. Transportation may be difficult.

I hope this information helps you make an educated decision on choosing your next sailboat for purchase. All of these boats are different, have their advantages and drawbacks. I wish Megatech still made their boat, but there are some great boats on the list above.

Happy Sailing!

Introduction

When you think about RC sailboats, you may be reminded of the time you spent behind your parents’ house, sailing in circles on a tiny little body of water. You probably had an RC sailboat when you were a kid and it was one of your favorite toys. Or maybe you never had one but always wished that you did? Well, I’m here to tell you that now is your chance! There are so many different kinds of RC sailboats out there right now which makes it easy for anyone to find what they are looking for. In this article we will cover some of the best RC Sailboats out there as well as tips and tricks on how to use them effectively!

Best RC Sailboats: A Blog about RC Sailboats and strategies on how to sail them.

If you’re looking for information about RC Sailboats, this blog will be a great resource for you. The blog is written by an experienced sailor who has won races and championships in the past. In each post, he shares his knowledge with other RC Sailboat enthusiasts so that they can learn how to sail these boats like an expert sailor.

If you want to get started with RC Sailboats, this blog has tips on how you can begin your collection and what kinds of parts are needed in order to build your own fleet of boats. The author also gives links to other websites where more information about RC Sailboat building can be found.

Difference between an RC Sailboat and a normal sailboat.

The main difference between an RC sailboat and a normal sailboat is that the sails are controlled by a remote control. This allows you to adjust your sails, move around in the water, and even go backwards if needed. With an RC sailboat, there are no ropes or pulleys involved because everything is done with batteries and motors.

To control your RC sailboat, you will need a radio transmitter which sends signals to the motor that controls the rudder and boom (main mast). Without these components it would be impossible for someone who doesn’t know how to sail to get anywhere on their own!

How to Fly an RC Sailboat?

When you want to learn how to fly an RC Sailboat, there are several things that you should consider. You need the best RC Sailboats and a good strategy to start with.

  • Decide on what kind of sailboat you want. The most popular types are catamarans, monohulls and dinghies.
  • Choose the right type of battery for your boat: Li-po or NiMH? Li-po batteries have higher energy density but also cost more money than NiMH batteries so it’s up to you which one suits your budget best! Also check out our article about How much does lithium polymer battery weigh? This will help determine if your boat will handle well or not!

You might be wondering whether it’s better for beginners just starting out in this hobby? Well there’s no one size fits all answer here since everyone has different skill sets when it comes down

Parts of the Ship

Every RC sailboat has the following parts:

  • Hull – The hull is the body of the ship. It’s usually made out of plastic or wood and holds everything together. The hull also helps steer your boat!
  • Mast – The mast is the tallest part of your ship, which holds up your sails and all other rigging equipment.
  • Keel – Your keel helps with steering by helping to keep you going straight forward (instead of turning left or right). It can be made out of metal, plastic or wood too!
  • Rudder – A rudder helps steer left or right so that you don’t have problems navigating tricky areas like windy beaches or narrow rivers where rocks might get in your way! You’ll find this control stick on either side near where someone would sit in real life too – but only one person needs one per vessel when playing out there 🙂

Hull (Body of the ship)

The hull is the main body of the boat. It keeps your boat afloat and allows it to move through water. The hull is made of plastic, has a keel, rudder and sails attached to it.

The hull can be damaged if you crash into objects or rocks while sailing. You should watch out for these when you are sailing so you don’t hurt your boat’s hull!

Mast (The tallest part of the sailboat)

The mast is the tallest part of a sailboat and it’s usually made of wood or carbon fiber. The mast is connected to the hull by a hinge so that it can be removed for storage. If you want your RC sailboat to have a low center-of-gravity, you should adjust this so that it stays lower than normal (but not too low). This will make sure that your boat is stable when sailing in rough waters.

Keel (Part that helps with steering)

The keel is the part of the boat that helps to keep it steady and upright. It also keeps it from going in circles, as well as tipping over. The keel can be attached to either side of a boat, but most commonly it will be attached at the bottom of your boat’s hull. Most RC sailboats have metal keels made up of multiple pieces that are joined together using screws and fasteners with nuts on top to hold them in place during use so they don’t come loose while sailing or racing on your watercraft!

Rudder (Helps steer left or right)

A rudder is a long thin blade that helps the RC sailboat turn left or right. The rudder is connected to the hull of your boat, which means it will always be facing forward. It’s controlled by a servo (a motor with a metal arm), which is connected to your receiver via wires.

Boom (Connects the mainsail to the mast)

The boom is the long pole that extends aft of the mast. It connects the mainsail to the mast and helps control the angle of the sail. The boom is used to trim (change) your sails, which means adjusting them so they capture as much wind as possible.

Main Sail (Biggest sail on the boat, gives it power)

The main sail is the largest sail on your boat. It gives your boat power, which allows you to go fast. The main sail is located at the front of your RC Sailboat and has a large surface area for catching as much wind as possible.

Vang(Keeps the boom from falling too low when sailing downwind)

The vang is a line that keeps the boom from falling too low when sailing downwind. It is used on boats with a single mast, as well as boats with multiple masts. For example, the Hobie 16 has two sails and uses vang to keep them stable in windy conditions. Vangs can also be found on catamarans, which use two or more masts to support the sails. The main purpose of vang is to control how much tension is placed on your sail(s). When you tighten your vang, you increase tension which pulls up on your boom and raises it higher out of the water—and vice versa: when loosening its slackness, this allows more “give” in your tautness while still keeping things steady enough so that you don’t lose control over where exactly certain parts are going! In extreme cases where even having one extra pull line isn’t enough (like say there’s someone right behind us trying their hardest not just because they want everyone else around them happy but also because they’re terrified) then we would recommend using three instead: one at each end connected together by some sort of pulley system.”

Shrouds(Wire that holds up the mast)

Shrouds are wires that hold up the mast, and they keep it upright. Shrouds are made of wire, and usually of stainless steel. The main purpose of shrouds is to provide rigidity to the mast. They also prevent undue stress on other parts of your boat as you’re sailing. If a shroud breaks, your boat may become unstable or even capsize!

Boom Vang(Will keep boom in place when sailing downwind)

A boom vang is a line that runs from the boom to the mast, and helps to keep the boom from falling too low when sailing downwind. It’s controlled by a line that runs from the end of your spinnaker pole (or “stick”), up through a block on top of your mast, down through another block attached near or on your deck, back to where it attaches at two points on your sailboat’s hull.

When you want to raise or lower your sail using this system, you pull or release tension in this line – making it easier for adjustments in height.

Best RC Sailboats provide fun and can be used in racing

But how do you choose the right RC sailboat?

Well, the most important thing to consider is whether or not you want to race. If you just want to have fun and enjoy sailing, then a racing-style boat will be too expensive and complicated for your needs. Instead, look for an RC sailboat that’s simple but still provides a challenge (and plenty of fun). Look for boats with at least three sails. This way, you can take advantage of different wind conditions when sailing in different areas. You might also want a larger model if space isn’t an issue—they tend to move faster than smaller ones!

Of course there’s always another option: if you’re really serious about getting into RC sailboats and learning about them more thoroughly before buying one yourself then it might be worth checking out local clubs where enthusiasts meet up regularly so that they can share tips and tricks with each other while having fun doing so!

RC Sailboat Racing: An Exciting and Engaging Hobby

RC sailboat racing is an engaging and exciting hobby that is enjoyed by people all over the world. This activity involves racing small model sailboats against other competitors in a controlled setting, usually on a large body of water such as a lake or a pond. What makes this hobby so appealing is the combination of sailing skill, strategy, and the ability to handle changing wind and water conditions.

To get started in RC sailboat racing, you need to buy an RC sailboat. There are many different types and models of sailboats available, so it’s important to choose one that suits your skill level and racing needs. Beginners may want to start with a simple model, while more advanced sailors may prefer a more complex model that offers greater speed and maneuverability.

Once you have your sailboat, the next step is to learn how to navigate the water and handle the wind. This requires a good understanding of the effects of wind direction and current on your boat’s speed and maneuverability. Good boat handling skills are also essential to avoid collisions and maintain momentum. In addition, because racing involves more than just sailing skill, it’s important to develop sound strategies for success. Knowing when to tack or gybe, which side of the course to sail on, and how to position yourself relative to other boats are all crucial elements of RC sailboat racing strategy.

Choosing the Right RC Sailboat

Choosing the right RC sailboat for your needs is essential. Here are some key points to keep in mind when selecting your sailboat:

  • Choose a model that’s appropriate for your skill level . If you’re new to RC sailboat racing, consider starting with a low-priced and simple model like the Joysway Dragon Force 65 or the DragonFlite 95. These boats are affordable, easy-to-assemble, and provide excellent value for money.
  • Consider the size and weight of the boat. Larger boats are generally faster on the water, but can also be more difficult to control. Lighter boats can be more maneuverable, but can be more susceptible to wind and water conditions.
  • Look for a boat with features that suit your racing needs . Some models come with features like adjustable sails, ballast tanks, or digital controls that can give you an edge on the water. Others are designed to provide higher speeds and greater stability in changing wind conditions.
  • Compare prices and read reviews . There are many great RC sailboat brands and models available on the market. Take the time to research customer reviews, compare prices, and choose a model that’s right for your budget and racing needs.

Remember, choosing the right RC sailboat is only the first step in becoming a successful sailor. Investing in quality equipment, training, and practice are all crucial elements of success in RC sailboat racing . To learn more about selecting the best RC sailboat for your needs, check out websites like RC Sailboat Guide or Radio Sailing Shop for more information and product recommendations.

Handling Wind and Water in RC Sailboat Racing

RC sailboat racing doesn’t just require sailing skill, it also requires a good understanding of wind and water conditions . Here are some tips for handling wind and water conditions during a race:

  • Pay attention to the wind direction and strength . Use the telltales on the sail to monitor wind direction and adjust accordingly.
  • Be aware of the current and how it’s affecting your boat’s speed and maneuverability.
  • Stay alert for shifts in the wind and changes in water conditions. Watch other boats and adjust your strategy accordingly.
  • Learn how to tack and gybe efficiently. Practice maneuvering your boat through different wind angles and directions.
  • Use your boat’s rudder to steer and maintain course. Adjust the rudder position to compensate for wind and water conditions.

How do racing sailboats go faster than the wind?

Racing sailboats can go faster than the wind by utilizing the principles of aerodynamics and physics. When sailboats are inclined at a certain angle, their sails can create lift and a force that propels them forward, even against the wind.

Some methods that sailboat racers use to achieve higher speeds include:

  • Shaping sails to maximize aerodynamic efficiency.
  • Adjusting the sail angle and boat direction to optimize wind flow around the sails.
  • Using different sail types and sizes based on wind conditions.
  • Reducing weight and drag by streamlining the boat and crew movements.

Overall, the goal is to find the sweet spot where the boat is maximally efficient at converting wind into forward motion. For more information on sailing techniques and equipment, websites like Sailing World and Cruising World offer a wealth of resources and product reviews.

Strategies for RC Sailboat Racing

RC sailboat racing involves more than just sailing skill. It’s also a strategy game. Here are some key strategies to keep in mind during a race:

  • Pick the right starting position. Look for a clear path to the first mark and position yourself to take advantage of the best wind.
  • Keep an eye on other boats. Watch their positioning and try to anticipate their moves.
  • Use wind shifts to your advantage. When the wind shifts, adjust your course to get the best possible angle.
  • Take calculated risks. Sometimes it pays off to take a chance on an alternative course or maneuver.
  • Keep a steady pace. Avoid drastic changes in speed or direction that can slow down your boat or cause it to lose momentum.

Interesting fact: Did you know that there are specialized RC sailboats for racing ? These boats are designed specifically for speed, maneuverability, and racing performance.
