Il est en navigation et fait déjà bruisser les réseaux sociaux. Le Sailing Yacht A, designé par Philippe Starck et propriété de l’oligarque russe Andrey Melnichenko et de son épouse Aleksandra, ex-mannequin serbo-croate, chanteuse pop à Belgrade, est le plus grand voilier privé au monde . Il mesure 142,81 m (469 pieds) de long et aurait couté la somme de 360millions £ (417millions €).

Son propriétaire aurait  une fortune estimée à 13,4 milliards de dollars (12 milliards €).  Sailing Yacht A  a pu être construit grâce à la technologie du chantier allemand German Naval Yards, filiale du groupe  Privinvest.  Son design ultra moderne fait parler sur les eaux du monde. Les commentaires des observateurs ne sont jamais indifférents: soit ils aiment soient ils détestent.

Le Sailing Yacht A est le second bateau que le milliardaire russe commande au designer Philippe Starck qui lui avait déjà dessiné le A, bateau à moteur, coque blanche aux lignes élancées. Le Sailing Yacht A est un trois-mâts (rotatifs en carbone) arborant 3.747 m² de voilure. A elle seule, la grand-voile du projet Sailing Yacht A, tissée d’une seule pièce en fibre de carbone, mesure 1.464 m².

Trois mâts ailes pivotants

A l’extérieur, point de bastingage, le tablier du pont est en verre . Tout comme les trois hublots elliptiques situés sur la quille pour observer les fonds marins. Passionné de technologie, le propriétaire a voulu le meilleur. Le verre a été laminé et a perdu 50% de son épaisseur sans perdre de sa résistance. Il se murmure que, pour rassurer les assurances, chaque pièce a été immergée au fond d’une fosse de 120 mètres.

A l’intérieur, bien entendu, seuls les matériaux de luxe sont présents: coursives en bois précieux, tables en cristal de Baccarat, salons aux murs en acajou tendus de peau de raie, fauteuils en alligator agrémentés de cornes de koudou. Dans la suite du propriétaire, accessible par empreinte digitale, le lit pivote sur lui-même pour choisir le meilleur point de vue à travers les grandes baies vitrées blindées.

Avec 44 caméras et 24 portes étanches, le sailing yacht A fonctionne aussi bien pour la navigation que pour l’hôtellerie grâce à ses 54 marins, mécaniciens, cuisiniers et stewardess pour une douzaine de passagers.

Un milliardaire russe s'offre le plus grand voilier du monde

C’est un fameux trois-mâts, mais celui-là est unique. Son nom, le Sailing Yatch A. Ce navire aux lignes futuristes est sorti du chantier naval de Nobiskrup à Kiel en Allemagne pour rejoindre Gilbraltar. Il doit y être livré à son propriétaire, le milliardaire russe Andrey Melnichenko, 119e fortune au monde. Pour 425 millions d’euros, l’homme d’affaires s’est offert le voilier le plus grand du monde.

Ce vaisseau mesure 143 mètres de long pour un poids de 12.700 tonnes. Ses mâts sont en carbone et le plus haut atteint 100 mètres au-dessus de la ligne de flottaison, plus haut que Big Ben ou deux fois plus grand que la Statue de la Liberté de New York. Selon Privinvest, le groupe financier qui a fait bâtir le vaisseau pour le milliardaire russe, c’est sans contexte "le plus grand navire de tous les temps". Le projet a été mené pendant des années dans le plus grand secret. "C’est une nouvelle génération de navires qui incarne la modernité et reflète la volonté de notre groupe de briser les frontières de l'ingénierie et du design", a commenté Iskandar Safa, fondateur du groupe Privinvest. 

Un navire signé par Philippe Stark 

La conception de cette œuvre d’art nautique, dont le design futuriste fait forcément polémique auprès des puristes, a été confiée à Philippe Stark, la star française du design, qui semble s’être inspiré des vaisseaux intergalactiques des films de science-fiction. Pour le designer français, ce n’est pas une première dans le nautisme. Il a déjà créé un yacht de 119 mètres, également pour Andrey Melnichenko. Mais sa popularité dans les bateaux vient du Venus, un "petit navire" de 70 mètres commandé par Steve Jobs, le fondateur d’Apple.

Le Sailing Yacht A est un palace flottant doté d’une vingtaine de cabines. Il dispose de 8 ponts reliés par des ascenseurs, d’une piste d’hélicoptère, de salles de gym et d’un spa avec piscine. Mais le plus impressionnant est sans nul doute sa salle d’observation sous-marine de 18 mètres carrés installée dans une quille de verre. Pour fendre les flots, il dispose de voiles dont la superficie atteint 3.700 mètres carrés. Mais au cas où le vent ferait défaut, il est équipé d’un système hybride composé de deux moteurs diesel de 3.600 kW et deux moteurs électriques de 4.300 kW. Il peut ainsi atteindre une vitesse de pointe de 21 nœuds.

Éviter les ponts et traverser les couloirs aériens

Cette mise à l’eau n’a pas été un long fleuve tranquille. Le Sailing Yacht A devait prendre la mer il y a un an. Mais, la livraison a posé quelques problèmes. Pour atteindre l’océan Atlantique, il a d'abord dû faire des détours pour éviter des ponts installés à une cinquantaine de mètres au-dessus des flots. Il a aussi dû surfer entre les bas fonds à cause de son tirant d’eau de 7,5 mètres. Enfin, comme pour tous les navires de plus de 40 mètres, il a aussi fallu obtenir une autorisation pour traverser le couloir aérien de l’aéroport international de Copenhague.

Aujourd’hui, le Sailing Yacht A est à Gibraltar, mais des problèmes financiers l’empêche désormais de quitter le port comme le révèle Euronews . À son arrivée dans le port espagnol, le navire a été bloqué par les autorités après une plainte de Nobiskrug qui réclame à Andrey Melnichenko un impayé de 15 millions d'euros. Pour le porte-parole du milliardaire, "cet incident sera rapidement réglé". "Nous avons supposé que le problème était réglé puisque Nobiskrug était heureux de livrer le yacht le 5 février à l‘équipe du propriétaire, afin d’effectuer d’autres travaux en Espagne”, a-t-il ajouté. En attendant, le navire devra attendre le printemps prochain pour prendre la mer.

Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises has begun regular operations of the newest addition to its fleet.

The 138- by 17-metre, full-rigged Sea Cloud Spirit can accommodate up to 136 guests. It is being presented as an alternative offering for all travellers in the premium cruise segment who want to avoid larger vessels of competitors but still wish for the comfort inherent in a five-star luxury ship.

The newbuild is equipped with all the characteristics of a modern cruise liner. Of the vessel’s 69 outside cabins, 25 including the three owner’s suites are equipped with balconies. A spacious wellness area comes with three treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, and a hairdressing salon. The separate fitness area is located on the sundeck of the ship while dining and entertainment options including a lounge, a restaurant, and a bar with bistro are available as well.

For a quieter recreation option, guests may access an onboard library located forward of the seven de luxe outside cabins on the number three deck.

This premium vessel was designed by Spanish naval architects Sener to meet demanding environmental standards while providing passengers an elegant interior design and improved levels of comfort and convenience. Design work was carried out in compliance to DNV class rules.

Besides providing the full basic engineering of the ship, Sener also performed additional modifications at the owner’s request. These included extending the stern length by 1.9 metres, replacement of steel blocks with aluminium blocks, modification of the forward area of the veranda deck, relocation of the accommodation ladder, and changes to the ballast, fuel, and freshwater tanks.

For regular cruising, the vessel is dependent primarily on its three masts with sails that cover a total surface area of 4,165 square metres. Hoisting the sails is done by hand and can be completed in just under an hour. The vessel nonetheless features a backup diesel-electric powerplant that will allow it to reach a speed of 14.2 knots.

The backup propulsion runs on eco-friendly marine diesel and is designed to comply with existing regulations on emissions and environmental protection, ensuring minimal environmental impact even if the sails cannot provide adequate propulsive power.

Sea Cloud Spirit was built entirely at the Vigo facilities of Spain’s Metalships and Docks. The vessel was handed over to its new owners in May of this year and sailed out of Rome on its maiden cruise in September. After initial voyages along the Italian coast between Tuscany and Sicily, it will cruise the waters around the Canary Islands from November 2021 to April 2022. For the winter season 2022/2023, it is scheduled to debut in the Caribbean and Central America, and will also offer voyages from Florida to the smaller Bahamian islands for the first time.

Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich Owns 16 Yachts And Vessels, 10 More Than Previously Known

Documents show that the sanctioned tycoon has a much larger fleet than previously known. At least one of the previously unreported yachts is currently in French territory, putting it at risk of being frozen by authorities.

A trove of leaked documents has revealed several previously unreported assets owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich . The files, shared with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its partners, including Forbes , show that Abramovich owns at least 10 more yachts and vessels through offshore companies and trusts—in addition to six yachts worth at least $1 billion that were already public knowledge.

The documents come from MeritServus, a Cyprus-based corporate services provider used by Russian oligarchs, and were initially shared with The Guardian , which received them from an anonymous third party. According to The Guardian , the files show that Abramovich transferred ownership of 10 offshore trusts with billions of dollars in assets —including the trust that owns his yachts and private jets—to his seven children in early February 2022, just three weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and about a month before Abramovich was sanctioned by the U.K. and EU. An OCCRP investigation using company records and documents in the leak also revealed that Abramovich had invested some $230 million in a large Russian forestry company —whose other shareholders included the Russian government—between 2008 and 2016, before selling his stake for about $110 million one month before the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Forbes identified 10 vessels owned by Abramovich that had not been previously attributed to him, bringing his overall tally to 16. Eight of the ships are small vessels that, according to the leaked documents, are “used to support the operations” of Eclipse , the 533-foot, $427 million megayacht that Abramovich had built in 2010. Eclipse is currently moored in the Turkish port of Bodrum, with three more of Abramovich’s yachts—the 458-foot, $475 million Solaris , the 180-foot, $38 million Halo and the 220-foot, $20 million Garcon —all anchored nearby, along Turkey’s western Mediterranean coast. A representative for Abramovich did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Outside of the eight support vessels, the leaked documents also show that Abramovich owns a 40-foot Bluegame motor boat named Umbra A , valued at roughly $1 million in a 2016 annual report. The most valuable of the previously unreported yachts is the 80-foot Kewpie , worth about $3 million according to yacht valuation experts VesselsValue. The ship is registered in Bermuda and is currently located in the French overseas territory of Saint Barthélemy, more commonly known as St. Barts, where it has been moored since early November. Abramovich is a familiar face in St. Barts: He owns two properties on the island, one of which was frozen by French authorities in April.

That means Kewpie is also at risk of being frozen, because it’s located on French territory and Abramovich is under EU sanctions—unlike the megayachts in Turkey, which has not imposed sanctions on Russian oligarchs. And Kewpie isn’t the only one of Abramovich’s vessels that could be in trouble. His 162-foot, $11 million Sussurro has been moored in La Ciotat on the French Riviera for nearly a year. Yet another yacht, the 164-foot, $30 million Aquamarine , appears to still be in the Netherlands. Aquamarine ’s ultimate owner is a British Virgin Islands-based company that Abramovich transferred to his business associate David Davidovich on February 24, 2022.

Abramovich uses a complex structure of offshore entities for his yachts plus other assets including four jets , six helicopters and luxury villas and estates . His fleet of 16 ships and 10 aircraft—worth a collective $1.6 billion—are owned by several firms registered in offshore havens including Aruba, the British Virgin Islands, the Isle of Man and Jersey, all known for their secrecy and low-tax regimes. The leaked filings, combined with a seizure warrant for two of Abramovich’s jets filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in June, show that all of these assets—except Aquamarine —are ultimately owned by the Cyprus-based Europa Settlement Trust.

Until February 4, 2022, Abramovich was the trust’s only beneficiary. But on that day, two of Abramovich's representatives—David Davidovich and Tatyana Haykin—filed a document that added his seven children as additional beneficiaries. Four days later, Abramovich was removed entirely, leaving the trust and its trove of yachts and jets to his kids. The amendments to the trust appear to have been completed by February 24, the same day Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine.

Despite the changes to his trusts in February, Forbes still counts Abramovich as a billionaire with an estimated net worth of $8.7 billion. While the megayachts and jets are now technically owned by his children, the oligarch still appears to control them: Abramovich flew aboard his Gulfstream G650 from Israel to Istanbul on March 14, before departing for Moscow the next day.

Plus d’un siècle d’histoire pour le fameux trois-mâts ! Construit à Nantes en 1896, ce voilier de commerce fréquente les côtes de l’Amérique du Sud et les Antilles. Rachété en 1914 par le Duc de Wesminster, il est transformé en yacht de luxe. En 1921, devenu propriété du brasseur irlandais Ernest Guinness, il sillonne les mers du globe sous le nom de Fantôme II . Après la seconde guerre mondiale, il part en Italie pour la formation d’apprentis marins. Il retrouve son pavillon français en 1979 et depuis, il continue de naviguer et de faire rêver petits et grands…

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.  

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board." 

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
