El Yacht Club inicia una semana de actividades por su 85° aniversario

Habrá pruebas deportivas, actividades sociales y gastronómicas todos los días, desde este sábado hasta el domingo 28. .

El Yacht Club Santa Fe inicia este sábado una semana de celebración con una nutrida agenda de actividades deportivas, sociales y culturales, la que culminará el domingo 28, día en que esta emblemática institución del yachting argentino festeja su 85° aniversario de vida. Para dar a conocer la grilla de actividades se realizó este viernes al atardecer una conferencia de prensa en su sede.

Ubicado sobre la margen del oriente del río Santa Fe (también denominado Canal de Derivación Norte), junto al imponente Puente Oroño y el emblemático Puente Colgante, el YCSF dio inicio en Santa Fe a la actividad deportiva de competición a vela, allá por 1936. La de entonces era otra ciudad y el blanco de los paños al viento sobre el río, de los primeros veleros que llegaron, llamaban la atención de los paseantes sobre la Costanera.

"El club se construyó sobre el terraplén de la cabecera Este de un antiguo puente de madera de quebracho, aguas abajo del Puente Colgante y posteriormente en 1968 fue trasladado a su actual ubicación al quedar la sede original afectada por la construcción del Puente Nicasio Oroño", recuerda hoy uno de sus más experimentados navegantes, el entusiasta Edgar Castillo (h); quien luego destacó que el club ha "representando en su historial a la ciudad tanto en contiendas nacionales como internacionales", dice quien hoy ocupa un lugar en el Tribunal de Honor de la institución.

Una tradicional embarcación original era el velero clase Santa Fe, muy similar en sus dimensiones a una canoa pescadora, con un aparejo de vela latina y un diseño acorde a la necesidad para lograr una navegación impulsada por el viento. A bordo de esos pequeños barcos aprendían a navegar los primeros deportistas de la especialidad que hubo en la ciudad. Incluso algunos de ellos llegaron a fabricarlos, aprendiendo el fascinante oficio de la carpintería náutica.

En paralelo, el club fue tomando un mayor impulso en obras. Hubo que refular el sector para levantar la cota y protegerlo contra las inundaciones. Se construyeron su sede social, la confitería, el SUM, vestuarios, guardería de embarcaciones, quinchos y la piscina, además de las caletas náuticas y la parquización del lugar para embellecer y dar confort a sus asociados, en un lugar privilegiado para contemplar el ocaso detrás de los edificios.

El último emprendimiento del Yacht Club fue su Sede Playa sobre la Setúbal, para brindar servicios a navegantes de veleros monotipos, La misma está ubicada sobre la margen oeste de la laguna, en un sector del predio del club Ciclón Racing. Desde allí los deportistas pueden acceder a una cancha de regatas privilegiada con la que cuenta Santa Fe, la laguna.

Servicios náuticos y sociales

Hoy la institución cuenta con todo lo necesario para brindar un servicio de excelencia a sus asociados y al resto de la comunidad, con un salón para actividades y fiestas, la confitería abierta a todo público, quinchos totalmente equipados, parque con juegos infantiles, entre otros. Además, son generadores de trabajo formal y de calidad. En cuanto a la actividad náutica, el club tiene un muy buen servicio de marinería, con todo lo necesario para la guardería y amarra tanto de veleros como yates y otros tipos de embarcaciones.

El YCSF es parada casi obligada para aquellos que recorren el río Paraná, navegantes que desde el Delta buscan remontar hasta el Paraguay. Y también para los de río abajo, que navegan hacia el Río de la Plata. El club les ofrece cómodas amarras de cortesía, con conexión eléctrica y de agua potable, entre otros servicios, a solo diez minutos del centro de la ciudad.

Párrafo aparte merece la tradicional Semana de la Setúbal, el evento náutico más importante de la ciudad, que cada año convoca a cientos de niños, adolescentes y adultos de todo el país, quienes compiten en la laguna Setúbal en las distintas clases de veleros monotipos, como optimist, láser, snipe, pamero, F18 y kite, entre otras.

Para ello se preparan y aprenden jugando la navegación a vela en el club y en la Setúbal, las niñas y niños que concurren a la Escuelita de Vela y a la Colonia de Vacaciones "Velitas". Mientras que adolescentes y adultos cuentan con el Curso de Timonel de veleros cabinados, la escuela de la clase Pampero (junto a UNL), y otras actividades como gimnasia, yoga y ritmos. Pero además de la vela, el YCSF tiene actividades como motonáutica, wakeboard y cruceros.

En estos 85° años de vida, el Yacht Club Santa Fe pretende seguir ampliando la pasión que los une: la actividad de la navegación. Es por ello que ofrece sus servicios a toda la comunidad, más allá de sus asociados. La colonia Velitas es abierta a todos los interesados, al igual que los cursos de vela. "El objetivo es que el santafesino entienda que no es indispensable contar con una embarcación para aprender a navegar, sólo debe acercarse al club", sintetizó Rubén Romano, desde la subcomisión de actividades sociales.

Romano destacó luego que "el YCSF ha sido uno de los principales actores civiles de la ciudad, cuna de destacados deportistas a nivel nacional en motonáutica y vela, sede de importantes eventos sociales, ejemplo de voluntariado en las grandes inundaciones, mentor del acercamiento a la náutica, al río, a la pesca y camping, al ambientalismo, anfitriones organizadores de eventos y competencias náuticas de todo tipo, dueños del balcón más lindo de la postal de la ciudad, lo que nos genera un gran compromiso para el futuro con un desafío para los próximos años de transformarnos en un club moderno, que incorpore nuevas disciplinas, más servicios y con mayores vínculos con el medio".

SDSU basketball gets visits from 2 transfer bigs this week

Michigan State’s Mady Sissoko and Middle Tennessee State’s Jared Caldwell-Jones are the latest candidates to fill the Aztecs’ need for a veteran post

San Diego State secured its backcourt over the weekend with a commitment from Florida Atlantic guard Nick Boyd.

Now the big focus is on a big.

The Aztecs hosted Bowling Green forward Rashaun Agee on a visit two weekends ago but passed on him, and on Monday the 6-foot-8, 225-pounder who ranked 19 th nationally in rebounding committed to USC and new coach Eric Musselman.

Two more bigs are scheduled to come to campus this week: Michigan State’s Mady Sissoko and Middle Tennessee State’s Jared Coleman-Jones. Both have one year of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-9, 260-pound Sissoko arrived Monday as part of four-day, four-school whirlwind. He visited Washington on Saturday, Cal on Sunday and heads to Colorado tomorrow. A decision is expected by the end of the week.

Sissoko is from Bafoulabe, Mali, in West Africa, but the connection to SDSU is a tiny town in central Utah. He attended Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant with former Aztecs guard Matt Bradley, who rates Sissoko among his favorite teammates at any level and has raved to him about his experience on Montezuma Mesa.

He started 56 games for the Spartans and Tom Izzo over the last two seasons and was a popular figure inside and outside the locker room. But his minutes decreased from an average of 21.1 in 2022-23 to 15.3 last season, and he decided to head elsewhere for his extra COVID-19 season of eligibility and grad school.

Izzo, speaking last week on Tim Staudt’s radio show in East Lansing, sounded sorry to see him go.

“You know, Mady is a tough one,” Izzo said. “He had a tough year, yet I’m telling you, he’s a lot better player than some of the abuse (he got). Our centers took abuse, some of it rightfully so, some of it we (coaches) have to take some blame on.

“Mady will leave here in great graces. He’s going to graduate. He’s going to accomplish some things. And yet, some of me is sad in Mady leaving because I think he was progressing as a sophomore and then his junior year he just did not have as good a year. We’re going to try to help him get to where he wants to get.”

His numbers are hardly dazzling: 4.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game over the last two seasons with unimpressive advanced analytics. (Then again, Jaedon LeDee had career averages of 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds before coming to SDSU and becoming an All-American.)

The pros: He’s a battle-tested veteran who started in the Big Ten, learned to play defense from Izzo, has big-game experience and provides a positive presence in the locker room. And he might have more offensive success in a Mountain West largely devoid of quality bigs.

The 6-10, 240-pound Caldwell-Jones, in many ways, is the opposite proposition: a highly skilled offensive player who struggles on defense and played on a 14-19 team in Conference USA that lost 71-34 against Saint Mary’s.

The connection is an older brother who played football at SDSU. His father played football at Florida State.

Caldwell-Jones grew up in Georgia and began his career at Northwestern for one year (where he went by Jared Jones), then transferred to Middle Tennessee State for the next three. Last season, he averaged 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 44.2 percent on 3s and 77.1 percent from the line.

He can score at all three levels, rebounds well on the defensive boards and is an excellent passer for someone his size (his 20.4 percent assist rate was nearly double the next best on the team). His stats over MTSU’s final 10 games reflect that: 14.7 points, 48.0 percent on 3s, 80.4 percent on free throws, 8.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists (but 3.5 turnovers) and 1.2 blocks.

Unlike Sissoko, though, he’d be moving up a level in competition, playing for a team that beat Saint Mary’s by 25. He’s scheduled to visit SDSU on Tuesday and Georgia Tech on Thursday.

It makes for an apples-to-oranges comparison.

“It’s tricky,” Izzo said on radio about the transfer evaluation process. “We spend hours watching film on a guy someone else rates highly but might have played at Northern Michigan or might have played at Duke. That’s the kind of spread in this whole thing. It’s confusing, it’s hard, it’s different, and everybody is having to adjust to it.”

The other tricky part is not knowing who ultimately might be in the portal. Players have until May 1 to submit your name (but the end of the summer to choose a new school), and more are by the day. Grad transfers can still move over the summer even if they’re not in the portal by next week’s deadline.

So do you take a guy now? Or wait to see who might be available later, when most teams have filled their rosters and the competition (and price) for coveted players is lessened?

Exhibit A: last weekend. On Saturday, Ole Miss 7-footer Moussa Cisse entered the portal. On Sunday, 6-11 Ohio State center Felix Okpara and Texas-San Antonio 7-footer Carlton Linguard Jr. did as well.

The Aztecs currently have one available scholarship. They are replacing three departing seniors with three incoming freshmen, then had two spots open when Micah Parrish (Ohio State) and Cade Alger entered the portal. Boyd claimed one spot. The other will go to a big, possibly Sissoko or Caldwell-Jones or someone else who hasn’t yet visited.

There’s still a chance the Aztecs may add another transfer beyond that, most likely a shooter. But that would require someone else among the 13 scholarship players entering the portal or becoming a walk-on. The NIL age allows for that, since a player could technically pay his own tuition and be reimbursed by a collective.
