Broker's Comments

This craft is fitted out mainly for racing and has been successful as such in local events. It performs well handling like a dinghy but is also very sea worthy and takes the North Sea in its stride. It has provided lots of fun for the owner and his children but he is now changing to a different class of boat.

HI im looking for info on these yachts cannot find much on the web..anyone had one? what are they like to sail etc?

bob26

Do you mean the Skipper 22 designed by Peter Milne or the Skipper 28 by Angus Primrose (both built by Richmond Marine)?

Or SK700 built by Cruachan Marine? There was a SK700 review in PBO 160 April 1980. Suggests they are light displacement boats - fast but tippy ... not really family sailing. Concluded: "All in all...SK is excellent value, has good performance and should appeal to those moving up from dinghy racing." LOA23ft,LWL 16'8", beam 8'2" displacement 2200lb ballast 800lbs (36%) sail 275sqft lifting keel 1.09/4'7" draught, fixed keel 4'7". Designer Stephen Jones. PM me if you want a copy of the boat test.

Same boat pictured http://www.ybw.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10805&stc=1&d=1302367842 Yes the pics in both seem to be the same boat (Skagen K8017) ... maybe one of these diffferent specs was for the prototypes mentioned in the guide to cruising boats and production boats changed??....sorry haven't quite got the hang of pics in posts

Yes thats the one about 23 foot open at the stern...that last photo is oban so that makes sense looks like it would be lively fun! and that skipper 700 is how it looks so ye very good info!

Seajet

I always thought the Skipper 700 had potential to be a good boat, though maybe requiring an experienced crew rather than a novice family - a bit like a smaller Aphrodite 101 in spirit, as both never seem to have been appreciated though quite different design approaches. When discussing ballast ratios, check where that ballast is situated ! Some lift keel boats have built in ballast stubs just below the waterline, others carry a bulb low down on the end of the keel... While I favour the latter idea, the ballast stub format may give better longitudinal stability ( just hard-mouthed steering on the ones I've tried ) and require a much lighter keel and mechanism; whether this is an aid to sailing or manufacture I'll leave to you to decide, but the S700 did always strike me as a sailor's boat.

E.Dubois, 3/4 Ton. I raced her at La Trinité sur Mer in France 80's

Rakau is a Stephen Jones 1 tonner (27.5 ft IOR), launched in 1981, I think built by the Webb brothers in Lymington for a couple of New Zealanders based in the UK. I raced against her in the 81 Lymington spring series. She was a stunning looking boat with her marquetry transom and very succesful, being RORC yacht of the year one year. Was later sold to France but no idea of her after that. Would love to here she's still around & being looked after!

She is still around. I saw her on 10 May 2013 at Veere (the Netherlands), lovingly maintained, under Dutch flag. Unfortunately I had no camera at hand.

There is a picture on Marine Traffic at this link: http://photos2.marinetraffic.com/ais/showphoto.aspx?mmsi=244032059&imo=0

a lovely little boat, I did the Fastnet on her in 81 prior to the Whitbread

I am pretty sure she was built in Burridge near the Hamble not in Lymington. She had a refit there too. Raced against her in Solent Points and always a favourite of mine. Patrick Pym helmed her quite a bit.

Just found this which give more info...http://www.histoiredeshalfs.com/One%20Tonner/OJo%20Rakau.htm I was on Creamcracker with Hoppie, just lost out to Rakau.

Seen under Dutch flag in Salcombe this summer ('19). Converted for cruising. Still stunning. Raced against her in Torbay Admiral's Cup in the early '80s.

Walk down memory lane - tied to the mast after st.malo - crew past out under table at awards ceremony 1st place. Provisions back across the channel - French bread and brandy ..massive storm knocked all electronics and I had to call in late 2 days work at the RORC - kiwis always,,,

rakau was an amazing sailing vessel in spite of her drunken crew,😘

Loved her and her crew -best life memories ever -

How did you know she had a drunken crew? Did I know you?

They went hand in hand - but she was special - thank God she didn't need a competent crew

❤️ Loved my times with Rakua and her drunken sailors I was always safe - even when tied to the mast.

Sail on sailors - proud to have been in Bermuda to watch next incredible generation of kiwi sailors take the cup,⛵

Singer SK700 Is this a good machine

I have been toying with buying the SK 700 and wonder if there are any opinions on this machine. Is it good bad or same as others. Thanks in advance.

susieknitter

I think that this is a lovely machine, especially as it has a knit radar that is really nice to use.

Thanks so much.

This is a work hourse. Very nice punch card machine

It is the best punchcard SInger made. I really like it. It is different than the Brother machines as far as the carriage goes, but easy to learn. It has a lace carriage that allows you to just use the 1 carriage instead of having to use 2 when using the Brother machine. Has a really nice color changer. I highly recommend it.

The Singer SK700 is a great machine. It has so many features built in: knit radar, intarsia, punch lace, tuck, slip, fair-isle, etc. I had one years ago, and sold it because I wanted the electronic machine. Let me tell you, I could kick myself for selling the SK700! I made beautiful things on that machine and wish I had it today.

Well thanks very much everyone. I am picking it up today. Will let you know how it is. I am getting lots of stuff with it.

Are the lace patterns limited in their selection due to using the same carriage to transfer and knit? This model is also interchangable with Silver Reed, does anyone know if the standard 4.5mm electronic K carriage can be used on this machines N bed?

You will find that there is a lever that enables you to see which row of the punchcard you are on without messing up your knitting. It is a boon when you get interrupted and are not quite sure where you have got too. Ribber is good too. JuliaJSDesigns

Aside from fine lace patterns where only one leg of a stitch is transferred while the other one stays on the same needle which cannot be done on a Singer, there is no limit to the kind of lace you can do on a Singer vs a Brother machine. Any lace pattern where the eyelets are right next to the doubled stitch (simple lace), can be knitted by just pushing the lace carriage across each row. Stitches are transferred and knitted at the same time. Any other lace pattern where the eyelets are one or more needles away from the doubled stitch (fashion lace), will take one or more passes without yarn in the lace carriage to do only the transfers, followed by a pass or two with yarn in the carriage to knit the stitches. To knit simple lace patterns like Brother machines do, you could knit them like fashion lace for the same result. The 700 was my first punch card machine and I really liked it and still have it.

I got it and it is lovely. Moves smooth like butter. No issues so far. Thanks all.

I have found that the Brother machine can be temperamental if it is cool where it is stored and you set it up for use - something to do with the band that goes across the back - whereas the 700 will not be problematic. Must say that I do like the Brother Garter Carriage to work my ribs at the bottom of a sweater, I then transfer them to the 700. Takes a minute or two to do but I really prefer to do this. the singer/studio/silver reed 700 is the newer model after the 360. I bought the 360 new the year the 700 came out because the company offered almost half off, but a dealer told me that the only difference between the 360 & the 700 was that the 700 didn't have ball bearings. both are work horses

Two thumbs up from me. I have one, just not enough time to throughly explore it. Laurelk in S. CA

I have only knit on Brother KMs. They are capable of knitting lace in multiple combinations with tuck sts, fine lace, weaving... Someone advised the Singer machines could knit Fashion Lace in addition. How does Singer/Knitmaster/Studio/SilverReeds fashion lace differ from the lace the Brother machines knit? If you knit regular lace with the Singer/Studio line the carriage transfers the sts and knits them at the same time. How is the Fashion lace knit?

For fashion knitting in the operation manual for the 700, it says to transfer stitches several times in each row or to transfer stitches in both directions in one row, move the Carriage to knit and transfer alternately. Then it says to move the carriage 8 times over the marked Card Memory Numbers 3-10, finishing with the carriage at the right side of the needle bed. During this the Carriage does not knit but transfers to their adjacent needles. The black numbers on the side of the punchcard tell you when the yarn is out of the yarn feeder and the numbers without black are when you put yarn in the feeder. In the case of Punchcard #L-10A, looks like 2 rows with yarn, 8 rows without, so I guess it is pretty much the same as knitting lace with the brother. I prefer to use the electronic carriage that transfers and knits every row. Here's a picture of the dress I made for my granddaughter for Valentines day using the electronic lace carriage. I knitted the yoke by hand.

Donetsk and Luhansk: What you should know about the ‘republics’

Who has followed Russia in recognising the controversial, Moscow-backed statelets in Ukraine? And what is life like there?

People wave Russian national flags celebrating the recognizing the independence in the center of Donetsk

Kyiv, Ukraine – Moscow-backed separatists have controlled the southeastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, known collectively as Donbas, for almost eight years.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised them only on Monday, paving the way for the official presence of Russian troops in the rebel-controlled areas that occupy about a third of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Why russia recognised separatist-held regions in east ukraine, syria backs russian recognition of east ukraine breakaway regions, stocks slide, oil jumps as russia orders troops to ukraine region, ukraine crisis: asia braces for economic fallout.

So far, only Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Syria have joined Putin in recognising Donetsk and Luhansk – along with breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. They all did so also on Monday.

The central question is whether Russia would recognise them in their current borders. Should it decide to help the rebels “restore” their statelets to the original borders, it may spell a large-scale war between Moscow and Kyiv.

At the moment, Russia will recognise “the borders, where the leadership of the DNR and the LNR are executing their authority,” Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told the Interfax News Agency on Tuesday.

But the foreign ministry also said on Tuesday that the issue of the borders is yet to be resolved.

While Ukraine and the West try to avoid war, other questions loom.

What are the roots of the region’s separatism? What has kept these areas alive since 2014? And what is their future?

Pro-Russian activists in Donetsk

Neo-Stalinism

A 13.5 metre-tall statue of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin still dominates the main square in Donetsk, the capital of the eponymous breakaway region in southeastern Ukraine.

And the constitution adopted by Lenin’s successor, Josef Stalin, has been restored by the Moscow-backed separatist leaders of Donetsk and neighbouring Luhansk after they broke away from the central government in 2014.

This constitution prescribes the death penalty for a number of crimes, making the separatist “People’s Republics” – and authoritarian Belarus nearby – Europe’s only homes to capital punishment.

After almost eight years of existence, the “republics” are understood to have evolved into totalitarian, North Korea-like statelets.

It is near impossible for foreigners to enter the areas. Ukrainians can only visit if they have relatives in Donetsk and Luhansk, and would have to cross into Russia first, which takes about 30 hours and costs $100 – a journey that also involves bribing officials at times. Residents need a Soviet-era residency registration.

In the statelets, secret police and “loyal” residents monitor every word, phone call and text message.

Dissidents or businessmen who refuse to “donate” their assets to the “needs of the People’s Republic” have been thrown in “cellars”, or dozens of makeshift concentration camps, without trial.

“It looks like the 1930s in the Soviet Union, a classic gulag,” Stanislav Aseyev, a publicist who was kidnapped in 2017 in Donetsk and was sentenced by a separatist “court” to 15 years in jail for “espionage”, told Al Jazeera.

For almost two years, he was incarcerated and tortured in these “cellars” until separatists swapped him and dozens of other prisoners in 2017.

Thousands of others were tortured and abused in the “cellars”, according to rights groups and witnesses. The grave human rights abuses make Donetsk and Luhansk far worse than today’s Russia, an international human rights advocate said.

“The cellars where prisoners are held in Donetsk, and the widespread use of torture, are among the most obvious human rights issues,” said Ivar Dale, a senior policy adviser with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, a human rights watchdog group.

But there are much wider problems such as civil and political rights, he said.

“You could say that the political repression in Russia is doubly felt in Donetsk and Luhansk and other areas effectively under control of the Putin regime,” Dale told Al Jazeera.

Rust-belt ruins

These tendencies have gone hand in hand with economic degradation.

The living standards are “many times, if not dozens of times worse than in pre-war 2013”, said Aseyev, 32, who now lives in Kyiv and has published a novel about the events in Donetsk.

This regress looks even more staggering considering Donetsk’s and Luhansk’s not-so-ancient history. The cities were founded by two Brits.

Children evacuated from the Donetsk region

Englishman Charles Gascoigne built a metal factory in what is now Luhansk in 1795, shortly after czarist Russia annexed Crimea and eastern Ukraine from the Crimean Khanate, a mostly-Muslim vassal of Ottoman Turkey.

Decades later, in 1869, Welshman John Hughes started a steel plant and a coal mine in what is now Donetsk, and the city was named after him – Hughesovka or Yuzovka – until the Soviet era.

The birth and rapid growth of both cities followed the czarist government’s drive to develop the immense coal and iron ore deposits of what is now eastern Ukraine.

Communist Moscow further spurred the region’s development, and tens of thousands of ethnic Russians settled there, making urban areas almost exclusively Russian-speaking.

Coal and mines grew deeper next to hillocks made of spent ore, and foundries, chemical and power plants dotted the region.

The political heyday of Donetsk began in 2010, when its native Viktor Yanukovych became Ukraine’s president – and brought cohorts of his cronies to Kyiv.

They tried to wrestle control of Ukraine’s politics and economy – but triggered months-long protests that began in November 2013 and ended in February 2014, when the Ukrainian parliament voted to remove Yanukovych from office.

The protests are known in Ukraine as the Revolution of Dignity – but Russian President Vladimir Putin still calls them a “coup”.

‘Russian spring’

In the czarist era, the region was known as Novorossiya – or New Russia – and the Kremlin would use the name in 2014 as it proclaimed the “Russian Spring” or “liberation” of Russian-speaking regions in eastern and southern Ukraine.

But pro-Russian rallies and uprisings in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and Odesa, its largest seaport on the Black Sea, failed.

However, thousands of Russian volunteers flocked to Donetsk and Luhansk to aid separatist militias – while many locals were ecstatic about the “Russian Spring”.

“Putin will come and restore order here,” one of their supporters, a rotund minibus driver named Valerii, told this reporter in April 2014 in Donetsk.

But four months later, after the separatists tried to confiscate his minibus, he locked his apartment, loaded the bus with his most valuable belongings, and left for Kyiv.

INTERACTIVE Ukraine Donbas region Feb

‘Price tag’

Even though Ukraine barred any economic ties to the separatist regions, they still exist – and even involve top politicians.

Pro-Western President Petro Poroshenko, who came to power after the Revolution of Dignity, admitted that he channeled government funds worth tens of millions of dollars in exchange for Donetsk coal in the winter of 2014-2015 because otherwise “half of Ukraine could have frozen”.

But Russia still had to bankroll the separatist provinces spending billions of dollars a year.

So, what are Moscow’s economic goals in Donbas?

“Very simple – to lower the price tag of maintaining the occupied territories,” Aleksey Kusch, a Kyiv-based analyst, told Al Jazeera.

To achieve that, Russia may want to remove the middlemen who pocketed the lion’s share of profits from the export of coal and steel and the delivery of humanitarian aid that was immediately resold on the black market.

“They kept up to 70 percent of the profits,” Kushch said.
