Waikoloa sunset cruises are a great way for people who are staying at one of the Kohala Coast resorts on the Big Island of Hawaii to get out and experience the ocean. For those who are active enough to snorkel, we would suggest one of these same boats for a Waikoloa snorkel trip instead, and for most guests they will do one or the other … but not both.

If you do wish to snorkel AND go out on a sunset cruise, we'd suggest a snorkel experience on the Fair Wind II or Captain Zodiac rafting and then do one of these sunset cruises.

Which one of these boats to reserve? Well, Spirit of Aloha runs nightly, so it is a LOT easier for us to get you space on that vessel, as long as you are planning at least a few weeks ahead of time. Sea Smoke and Spirit of Aloha are both sailing catamarans, which will be most people's preference. Sailing really adds a nice touch to the evening. Alala is a powered catamaran that USED to be a sailing catamaran. The mast was removed though as it was really a monster of a rig and no doubt expensive to maintain for the amount of use they were getting out of the sails. The one advantage that Alala has though is that it leaves from a dock at Kawaihae Harbor. It's a good option for people who don't want to get their feet wet and sandy before boarding, or would have difficulty walking on the beach.

Fun ride aboard the Sea Smoke

Excellent crew, beautiful skies, fantastic ocean...what more could you ask for? Loved riding the waves up front! Snorkeling was just a bonus!

Aloha, Mahalo for checking in with your review! We're really happy that you enjoyed your Ocean Sports Snorkel Adventure and had fun with the crew. Sounds like you got the "e-ticket ride" on our bow seats! We hope to see you again on another adventure with us next time you're on the Big Island.

We went on the snorkel/sail trip. The staff are very friendly and helpful and funny. We saw whales and dolphins and that in itself made the trip amazing. The snorkeling was fine. The boat is clean and fun to ride - breakfast and lunch were included along with an open bar after snorkeling and it was all good! It was a really great adventure and worth the price.

Aloha! Thanks for taking the time to provide us with feedback about your Ocean Sports Snorkel Adventure. We're really glad you enjoyed the cruise, the crew, and the whales and dolphins (what a treat...during the spring time, we often see Humpbacks, but getting to see dolphins too is really pretty rare). We hope to see you again on another adventure with us next time you're in our neighborhood! Mahalo from the Ocean Sports 'Ohana

Capt. Ryan and his entire crew were awesome! They were very attentive, professional, friendly and even fetched our cocktails for us! I truly appreciated that they did not harrass the whales, rather gave them plenty of space to breach and dive. This was my first snorkeling experience and I could not have loved it more. My favorite part was being able to hear the whale-song as I took free dives down into the deeper water. I not only heard their songs, but I could actually "feel" them - it was both odd and beautiful. I highly recommend this adventure. We did have seveeral people on board that got deathly ill, but Ryan ensured they were taken back to shore prompty. This adventure if worth every cent!!!

Aloha, Thanks for taking the time to provide us and the Trip Advisor Community with feedback about your recent Ocean Sports Snorkel Adventure. We're really glad that you enjoyed the cruise, the crew, and the whales! Getting to hear Humpbacks singing underwater - and feel reverberations from their songs - is a real treat. And we appreciate your kind words about our Captain and Crew - we'll be sure to give them a head's up to read your review so that they know their efforts were appreciated. We hope to see you again on another Ocean Sports Adventure! Mahalo

We went out on the morning tour when the whales were most active and the water the calmest. We saw many whales including a calf and mother. A continental breakfast is provided. We all were VERY surprised when two whales were under the boat and suddenly came up for air right next to us. No one expected that and no one had their cameras at the ready. They have a microphone which they lower as we drifted. What a symphony of sound!. They made the trip informative and fun. Don't forget to get your "Passport" signed. A signed passport provides discounts at many restaurants and on additional Ocean Sports tours. See their website wwwhawaiioceansports.com and click passport rewards for details. .

Aloha, Thanks for taking the time to provide us with feedback about your Ocean Sports Breakfast with the Whales Cruise. We're really happy you got to see (and hear) the Humpbacks! Sounds like you had quite the experience when the whales decided to do a little "people watching"...and thanks for the reminders about our Passport to Adventure Rewards Program We participate with more than 20 vendors on the Big Island, offering discounts on all kinds of merchandise, activities and meals. We hope to see you both again soon on another adventure with Ocean Sports!

From the moment we stepped onto A'Bay and took a look the Sea Smoke anchored out in the water, we knew we would be in for a lovely experience. We were not disappointed! On Dec. 18, while friends and family back home were digging out from another snow storm, we set out on a beautiful snorkeling trip with 20+ other adventurers and a crew of 3 or was it 4? young men. Fruit juice was served to us as we left the bay, and yogurt, pastries and soft drinks were available to anyone who needed more energy. After a beautiful trip south toward Kona and a briefing on the fish we would be seeing, plus snorkeling instruction for those who needed it, the anchor was set and we were given at least an hour to snorkel about the reef off of Kewaikiki. The water was clear and warm, and we spotted many fish that we had not seen anywhere else during our week on The Big Island. When we realized that we were the only two still in the water, my husband and I returned to the catamaran for our all we could possibly eat deli lunch with several types of meat, cheeses, sliced tomatoes, two salads, chips, salsa and, most importantly, all we could drink cocktails! We each had a couple of "pink parrots (or was it pirates?)" and three "blue whales", a new creation that day. Ahhh, were we blissfully happy or what? My husband had all of his unusual questions answered during a conversation with our captain, and we helped the bartender extend his creativity. The sun was warm, the breeze was velvety, and the views of the mountains from the sea were beautiful. It was simply a magical day!! Thanks, Ocean Sports!

Aloha, Thank you for taking the time to provide us and the Trip Advisor Community with such detailed (and may I say, poetic) feedback about your Snorkel Adventure with us. We're very happy you could join us, and we're also very happy that you got to enjoy the beauty of the reef, the island and our legendary catamaran, Seasmoke. Our crew also appreciated your input in the creation of our newest cocktail, the Blue Whale! We hope to see you and your husband again on another cruise with us next time you're in our neighborhood! Mahalo!

I highly recommend this snorkeling excursion! The service was outstanding- Special thanks to Kane, Captain Jeff, and Ikaika for making my (sometimes grumpy) grandparents feel comfortable and ensuring their satisfaction with the trip. The snorkeling was really great, I saw a variety of fish, coral, and a Hawaiian Sea Turtle! The crew was very helpful with educating us on what we'd be seeing under the water as well. This was definitely worth the money and I'll be sure to use Ocean Sports again on my next trip to Waikoloa! :)

Aloha, Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback about your recent Snorkel Cruise with us. We're really happy you (and your grandparents) enjoyed the trip, the marine life, and the crew. We'll pass on your kind words to Captain Jeff, Kane and Ikaika too! We look forward to seeing you again on another adventure with us next time you're in the neighborhood! Mahalo, Hoku

How Does Sea Smoke Occur and Is It Harmful?

Sea smoke is an eye-catching nautical phenomenon. In a nutshell, it’s a thick layer of fog that sometimes appears on the surface of oceans, lakes and rivers — especially in colder climates. It goes by many names around the world, including steam fog, white frost and black frost.

Whatever someone call it, sea smoke is a dangerous obstacle for maritime workers and travelers. It’s also a telltale sign the oceans are becoming increasingly polluted in the air and underwater. Take a look at the science behind sea smoke, explore its harmful effects and discuss some eco-friendly initiatives that can reduce the presence of sea smoke.

How Does Sea Smoke Occur and is it harmful

What Is Sea Smoke?

Sea smoke’s name can be deceiving because it isn’t smoke at all — it’s water vapor. It often looks exactly like the regular fog one might see early in the morning on a cold day. Fog develops the same way on land and sea — when cold air mixes with warm air along the ground or the ocean’s surface, causing moisture to evaporate and raising humidity levels.

Once the humidity reaches a certain point, the air can no longer contain the evaporated moisture in its gaseous form. As a result, the water is forced to condense into fog. Since marine climates are already humid, sea smoke is a common occurrence. It also tends to happen at night and just before sunrise because of the colder temperatures.

Sea smoke has earned nicknames like “steam fog” because it can linger longer than regular fog, especially if there is no wind. The ocean provides an ideal environment for fog to thicken and develop a wispy steam-like texture. It might look visually appealing on the calm ocean surface, but it poses some major problems for seafarers.

Reduces Visibility

The most immediate problem sea smoke creates is a reduction in visibility. When you’re out at sea, conditions are already poor enough in the middle of the night, but sea smoke makes the surrounding waters practically invisible. Ships caught in the dense fog risk going off course, hitting debris in the water or colliding with another vessel.

Traveling through sea smoke also forces the ship navigators to react quicker to any obstacles in the water and reduce speed in order to maintain a safe speed . Ships going through sea smoke might have to perform tight and dangerous maneuvers to avoid an accident.

Creates Water Hazards

Sea smoke can be considered a water hazard, but it also creates other risks. If temperatures are cold enough, the fog will freeze onto the hulls of ships and any debris floating in the water. As a result, large chunks of ice can form and create more obstacles for the vessel to account for.

The best way to address this issue is to keep the boat fenders clean and make sure no ice chunks develop on them. The fenders can protect the rest of the ship from ice chunks floating in the water — as long as they don’t reach glacier size, which is rare.

Leads to Unsafe Ship Conditions

Sea smoke also leads to unsafe conditions on the ship. It keeps the air frigid and uncomfortable, sometimes causing temperatures to plummet into the negatives. Freezing temperatures can cause the ship’s outer deck to develop its own thin layer of ice, creating many opportunities for slips, falls and injuries.

More ships are transitioning to rubber flooring because of its non-slip properties and resistance to extreme maritime weather conditions. Rubber flooring has many installation options, so it has become a mainstay on commercial vessels of all shapes and sizes.

Another risk is that a thin layer of ice can increase the weight of the ship, reduce the metacenter, and therefore the stability of the ship .

Indirectly Contributes to Air Pollution

Sea smoke should not be confused with haze, a visually similar phenomenon that occurs in cities from environmentally-damaging airborne particles . While haze is a form of pollution, sea smoke is just harmless water vapor. However, it still indirectly contributes to air pollution.

Reducing visibility might cause delays in shipping routes and make large vessels burn more fuel , leading to more CO2 emissions . In a similar way, forcing the ships to change directions frequently burns more power and causes more air pollution.

How Maritime Travel Worsens the Sea Smoke Problem

Over the years, constant maritime travel for commercial or recreational purposes has changed the ocean’s climate. Ocean-going ships make up 3% of global carbon emissions yearly. That number might seem small compared to other industries, but not when you consider 90% of energy trapped by greenhouse gasses ends up in the oceans.

The introduction of greenhouse gasses to any environment leads to higher temperatures. The endless traffic of ships has contributed to a significant increase in ocean heat content in the last few decades. Temperature fluctuations are now more extreme — especially during the winter months — creating an ideal environment for developing sea smoke.

It’s important to acknowledge pollutants released from ports worldwide also cause global warming and a higher prevalence of sea smoke. The most dangerous pollutants include high amounts of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and carbon monoxide.

All types of activity related to the shipping industry have made the sea smoke problem worse. Vessels can damage ocean air and water quality most, but the heavy equipment and vehicles at port facilities are also guilty of producing harmful emissions.

A shipping vessel surrounded by sea smoke

How to Address the Sea Smoke Problem

Sea smoke is a natural phenomenon that won’t go away anytime soon, but the shipping industry can still take some effective measures to reduce its frequency.

By addressing the main air- and water-pollution sources, ships can make the sea smoke problem more manageable in the long run. Here are five big changes that are already underway.

Transition to Renewable Energy

The most impactful change to reduce sea smoke is the widespread transition to renewable energy. Wind and solar power are the two most popular alternatives to combustible fuels that have gained traction in recent years. Using strong oceanic wind currents has been a tried-and-tested seafaring technique for thousands of years, going back to the first sailboats.

Meanwhile, solar panel installations are becoming more common on commercial and recreational vessels. With today’s technology, shipbuilders can combine the two energy sources to create gigantic solar sails that produce zero emissions. These advanced ships are still in early development but show massive potential for the future of sustainable seafaring.

That’s not all — the Global Maritime Forum has also identified more than 200 zero-emissions projects making impressive advancements. These projects include ammonia, battery and hydrogen fuel-cell technologies, methanol-fueled vessels, and ships that run on hydrogen combustion.

Optimize Ship Designs

Another important development has been optimizing ship designs overall, from their propellers to their waste management systems. One green ship concept called the Orcelle uses three different propeller systems in its daily operations to reduce its reliance on fuel. It also has a slim torpedo-like structure that could be more aerodynamic than traditional ship designs.

A massive project still under construction called the Super Eco Ship 2030 could set the standard for future shipping vessels. It has fully electronic freight loading and unloading processes, and has no conventional fueling systems. If this model proves successful, it should cause commercial shipping companies and port manufacturers to rethink their operations.

There are many other examples of new technologies being included in modern ship designs. Waste management systems are now available that treat wastewater before dumping it into the ocean. Commercial fishing vessels use ballast water systems to avoid introducing invasive species to new environments and disrupting marine ecosystems.

Prioritize Efficient Routing

Sea smoke is one of the many hazards that can force ships to go off course and experience delays. Prioritizing efficient routing will help the shipping industry solve this problem. Simply utilizing the latest routing technology can reduce fuel consumption by 5%–15% and save vessels precious time.

By traveling on maritime routes with pinpoint accuracy, ships can stay on course and power through dense sea smoke without delays or accidents. They still have to watch out for other debris in the water, but they don’t have to worry about sea smoke as a threat to the crew’s safety.

Reduce Ship Speeds

Slowing down is another surprisingly effective way to deal with sea smoke and lower shipping pollution. Reducing the speed of maritime transport by just 10% leads to a 27% reduction in emissions — a significant improvement.

On a more fundamental level, slowing ship speeds allows them to navigate through sea smoke with a lower risk of hitting debris. If vessels simply slow down and take their time in treacherous conditions such as sea smoke, their emissions will decrease and their safety will increase.

Consolidate Cargo

Finally, consolidating cargo on commercial vessels can help the shipping industry reduce emissions and lighten the sea-smoke problem. With fewer trips, there is a smaller chance of encountering sea smoke and getting into dangerous situations. Consolidating cargo also leads to less fuel consumption and packaging waste, so it has many benefits.

Putting more weight onto shipping barges will also force them to reduce their speeds and perform maneuvers more carefully. In a roundabout way, all these solutions work perfectly with each other to reduce the shipping industry’s emissions. In the long run, sea smoke will become less of a problem and the ocean will be easier to navigate.

Sea Smoke is Here to Stay

All the shipping industry’s sustainability initiatives will benefit the environment and reduce the prevalence of sea smoke, but they can never completely solve the problem. Thick layers of fog will always appear on the ocean’s surface as long as the laws of thermodynamics exist. Fortunately, working around sea smoke will become easier as shipping technology advances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sea smoke.

Sea smoke is another name for fog. Fog appears when cold and warm temperatures clash, causing water molecules to evaporate and become thick clouds. Sea smoke also goes by names like steam fog and white frost.

Where does sea smoke appear most often?

Sea smoke can appear over any body of water, but it happens the most in oceans and large lakes in the Northern Hemisphere. These environments have the perfect temperature ranges and humidity levels for regular fog development.

Is sea smoke dangerous?

Sea smoke is safe to inhale because it’s just water vapor. However, it’s a dangerous hazard for ships because it reduces visibility, can create chunks of ice in the water and can even cause the decks of ships to freeze over. It can also indirectly increase fuel consumption and emissions by forcing vessels to alter their course.

How do humans affect sea smoke activity?

All maritime activity affects sea smoke, whether it takes place in the ocean or a shipyard. Greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry have caused air and water temperatures to fluctuate, which leads to a higher prevalence of sea smoke.

What can we do to reduce sea smoke?

The shipping industry can do many things to reduce its emissions and thus mitigate sea smoke. It can switch to renewable energy sources, update its ship designs, use route optimization technology, lower travel speeds and consolidate cargo on commercial vessels.

She is beautiful. In a Eliza Dolittle sort of way. Just needs some civilizing.

She is very well fitted out for offshore work for a Kettenburg.

I was priveleged to sail aboard Sea Smoke II, A catamaran, in the 70's.

That was James Arness third boat after this one and K-50 hull number one.

Pops

In the 60's I used to wait on James Arness's and Peter Graves's (his brother) mom in a drugstore in Minneapolis. She never told me that Jimmy had a boat.

name I'm guessing "Sea Smoke" is named after "Gun Smoke". This boat is more important than I first thought. While not as huge and glamourous, it is certainly in the room with Wild Goose.

Yep, that chimes with what I was told. Nice to see it in print.

Just returned from Maui. Family and I did a Friday night sunset cruise. Highly recommend this trip. Capt. Phil and crew are top notch. They work hard to make sure you have fun. Great food and drink, whale watching and great views. The crew was very careful loading and unloading passengers at the start and end of the trip. Overall a great time. If you want to sail with a competent and caring crew, then Sea Maui is the place to be.

This was my third catamaran snorkel trip and it was the best one yet! First and foremost the staff was amazing. Throughout the trip the entire crew stayed engaged in conversation, and not just with one person. Hands down best part of my week stay here in Maui! Lunch was fantastic-drinks were flowing-& we made it back in a timely manner! Thank you so much to the crew of Sea Maui for being the best part of my vacation!

I had the joy of going on a Sea Maui trip. The boat was large and the vibe the crew had was amazing. They served us breakfast and lunch with a smile, had great drinks and music, and made us laugh the whole time. I chose to do SNUBA, and it was worth every extra penny. If I went back today, I would use Sea Maui and I recommend them to all of my friends who are going.

The crew and management at Sea Maui always go above and beyond to make sure their patrons have the best experience possible. They serve good food and drinks and have a smaller amount of people they go out with and they offer something for everyone. They are def my go to when I’m looking to get out in the beautiful waters of Maui.

Slide

All Sea Cat boats are constructed with the use of AFTEC™ engineering and design with airflow technology, a purposeful design that utilizes the interplay of air and water to produce a ride quality that is unparalleled in seaworthiness and comfort. As air flows between the two sponsons of the moving boat, it is directed under the boat and enters the water at strategic locations that optimize lift and cushions the boat. The result is a phenomenally stable ride that remains smooth & dry despite unfavorable conditions. The only way to appreciate the difference provided by the AFTEC™ design is to ride in a new Sea Cat Boat.

Beauty & stability.

The Pacific 3200 catamaran is a uniquely designed boat with unparalleled performance. The twin asymmetrical hulls create a high speed, stable, and efficient ride not found in other boats this size. The patented catamaran design greatly reduces side rolls and pitching from wave action. The planing hulls allow you to cruise at 20+ knots, even when the weather turns bad. Reduced drag results in better fuel efficiency, allowing you to go further on a tank of fuel.  The interior has all the features needed for extended cruising and with four different layouts available, you can customize the boat to fit all your needs. All of this, along with the respected SeaSport name and matchless reputation, gives you the finest built, best handling cruising catamaran in it’s class.

MEET THE CREW Captain: Mike Marier Chef/First Mate: Julie Marier November 1 2023 -1 April 30th 2024 Mike and Julie met soon after high school and have been inseparable ever since. While raising their family, Mike & Julie took family vacations up north which always meant time on the water boating, fishing, skiing, biking and lots of great memories with the family. They also traveled to tropical destinations to escape the cold winter months. When they took a family trip to the Virgin Islands they knew they would be back for good at some point. They bought a sailboat in Florida after their family was raised, spent time there and made the jump to come back to the islands after selling their home and everything they owned in 2019. They have run successful charters in the Virgin Islands ever since. Mike grew up in the land of 10,000 lakes and took full advantage of as many opportunities as he could to hit the lakes. As a boy and young man he spent many summers up north at the family cabin taking advantage of all water sports. It’s here that Mike developed his love of being on the water. Mike has been an entrepreneur most of his life and has, along with Julie run a personal training business, owned a fitness center and worked in the oil fields. In his free time, Mike enjoys working out, reading and ´wrenching´ on things. Mike looks forward to showing his guests a great time and all the amazing experiences the islands have to offer. Julie was born in Minnesota and moved to California as a young girl. It was then that Julie fell in love with the ocean and the peace and serenity it brought her. Julie’s love of cooking and food started at a young age as her mother was a wonderful cook and teacher and had Julie in the kitchen with her. Because of her early start, Julie worked in the service industry in many different fields after moving back to Minnesota. Julie loves to cook a wide range of foods but her favorites are comfort style, using fresh local ingredients. Julie’s hobbies are crocheting, cooking, working out with Mike and people watching :). Julie looks forward to having you and your family join them for an unforgettable experience. They hope to help others create lasting lifetime memories in their dream destination.

Hospitality Is Extraodinary, A Treasure So Rare

Sailing with you on the Sea Dog has been a dream come true. Your company is fantastic and you´re the best crew. Your hospitality is extraordinary, a treasure so rare. You´ve given us a vacation of memories to share. Captain Mike, a navigator supreme, guided Sea Dog like a nautical Dream. Julie, a master chef, her culinary art. Each meal a masterpiece, a delight from the start. To pristine beached and blue seas. The Sea Dog sailed, The beauty of the islands Each day wonders unveiled. We are grateful to sail with you For this is a dream come true!

Can It Ever Get Any Better!

Our last evening we stayed in Caneel Bay on St. John, the end of a glorious week of adventure, beauty and fun. This was our first time to the Virgin Islands, the first time on a catamaran and I find it hard to imagine it can ever get better than this. The natural beauty of the islands can only be seen in their entirety from the water. The many deserted coves and beaches, where we walked in the soft sand and snorkeled in the crystal clear water, were an up-close and immersive experience second to none. Our son loved the underwater sea scooters and the wake board. Our oldest daughter would go out on the stand up paddleboards, and our youngest daughters jumped from the upper deck in between relaxing and handing out. Mike was the perfect boat captain. Everything on board worked well, there was plenty of water for showers and all the toys and activities were already for use. He sailed us to the best of the islands, taking into account the weather and waves so we had a comfortable and enjoyable trip. On the longer stretches Miked showed anyone who was interested how to sail the catamaran, how to go fast and avoid the other ships and boats while getting to where we wanted to go. Mike led our weeklong vacation while being kind, pleasant, and confidentially in command. This certainly made it easy for us to relax and enjoy the experience. As Mike led the boat, Julie led the accommodations and especially the kitchen. meals were the highlights of each day! The quantity, quality and presentation of breakfast, lunch, snack and especially dinner was wonderful. Juslie is an outstanding chef. The cuisine was fresh and flavourful while at the same time being hearty, healthy and a joy to behold! She kept the living area neat, clean and attractive! While exploring both the American and British Virgin Islands we felt like we were in a floating luxury hotel. Every day provided a new and unique experience and the transit from island to island was an ever changing seascape of stunning natural beauty. Every person in our family rates this as one of our best vacations ever. The only thing that might make it better was if we had a small convoy of 2 to 4 catamarans shared with friends and family, each crewed by a couple as thoughtful and capable as Mike and Julie. Thank you!

Thank you for the awesome week on the Sea Dog! The food was amazing! Thankful for all your knowledge about the islands. We are blessed to have spent the week with you both.

Deep Gratitude

The work you do is so important and so appreciated. Just wanted to express our deep gratitude for the dedicated work you do day after day. Because of you Mike and Julie, our time on Sea Dog was one of the best vacation ever.

Wonderful Experience

Thank you for a wonderful experience. The meals were amazing. We appreciate your hospitality and look forward to another trip soon!

Championed This Entire Memory For Our Family

GUEST REVIEW TO BROKER We arrived home safe and sound last night. I wanted to let you know what an amazing time our family had on the SeaDog. We were treated like family by Nick and Kate and our son absolutely adores Nick. He spent so much time helping Nate fish and educating him on things, that we saw Nate come out of his shell and have great moments of dialog with Nick. We couldn’t be more happy than this. Kate prepared amazing food all week and waited on us hand and foot. The SeaDog was very clean and accommodating. We couldn’t have had a better crew. We highly recommend Nick and Kate, they championed this entire memory for our family. Thank you.!!!!

BROKER PROVIDED REVIEW

Yacht Name: Sea Dog Rating of Yacht & Crew: 5 Was the yacht comfortable and clean? Yes very good layout and very clean. Was the yacht well ventilated? Very - we kept the doors open during the day and the AC was nice and cold at night Was the crew friendly and accommodating? Our crew was absolutely amazing. Captain Nick was the perfect balance of fun and safe. I knew about 30 mins in to being on the boat that he had our safety as his number one priority and that he knew sailing inside and out. He took us to great spots and when he wasn’t busy sailing he was busy cleaning up, getting toys out, helping Kate, or answering any of our million questions we were always throwing at him. He fished with us every night and that was definitely a highlight of the trip. Kate…no words. I think I speak for all of us when I say we wanted to take her home with us! She was the sweetest, kindest hostess we could ever imagine. Her food was delicious and her drinks were even better! She worked so hard the week we were there and you could tell she loved every minute of it. It would be hard to imagine doing this trip with anyone else. Was the food good and well presented? Yes the food was amazing. Every meal was delicious and our Chef, Kate, took into consideration all of the likes/dislikes we each told her about. Additional comments about the yacht and crew? We can’t imagine a better time than the one we had onboard Sea Dog with Kate and Nick. Every aspect was perfect - from the planning with VI Sailing to the trip itself. The boat was beautiful and safe and our crew took the best care of us. It was hard to leave on the last day. Cruising Area Did you like the area you chartered in? Yes! We were so glad we were about to visit both the USVI and BVI in one trip.

Our Crew Was Absolutely Amazing

We had the best week ever on Sea Dog with Captain Nick and Chef Kate. Every aspect of the trip far exceeded any expectations that we had. The boat was beautiful. Very spacious and the lay out was perfect for our group of 6 to be together or spread out when needed. Our absolute favorite feature of the boat was the flybridge. It was where we ended every day and I can’t imagine being on a boat without that space. Absolute Best Way To See the USVI & BVI

We just returned home from a fabulous week aboard the Sea Dog. We were celebrating a couple of 40th birthdays with some dear friends! We could not have chosen a better boat and crew. Nick & Kate took the best care of us and made the week even that much better! They even joined in on our 80s theme night. Loved getting to know them and would sail again with them in a heartbeat! Sea Dog was the perfect size for our group and we loved all of the snorkeling, SUP, and fishing! The sky bridge was my favorite spot for pre-dinner happy hour. This was the absolute best way to see the USVI & BVIs. We cannot wait to do it again!

Seawind 1600

CRUISING CATAMARANS FOR REAL SAILORS

Seawind Catamarans have long been Australia’s most popular cruising catamaran designs. With over 35 years experience in building the highest quality blue water catamarans. As already discovered by our growing family of adventurous and like minded Seawind fans the world over, a Seawind boat could be the ideal sailing catamaran for you and your family!

STATE OF THE ART COMPOSITES

What's in a seawind .

Seawind Catamarans is in continuous development with every new boat model, building on the knowledge and success of previous designs. Every catamaran yacht is the result of hundreds of collective years of multihull experience, and the best construction techniques the world has to offer. Seawind Catamarans uses Resin Infusion Technology to produce a lighter, stronger, and cleaner product. In partnership with High Modulus and DIAB technologies, the complex infusion implementation process was developed using a 3D simulated flow model (pictured here) to ensure that best quality and consistency is achieved with every new Seawind sailboat.

PROVEN RELIABILITY FIRST & FOREMOST

Every Seawind sailing catamaran is built for cruising practicality, but delivered on a platform of fast, performance hulls with a fine bow entry and strong stiff construction. Poise is combined with power in the shape of a relatively powerful sail area, providing a power to weight ratio to set pulses racing.  This additional power delivers the speed to bring significantly more destinations within reach, satisfying a modern market which may need to fit “extended” cruising into only a few weeks or months. But in all of the 600 catamaran boats launched, not one has ever suffered a rig failure or have we ever experienced a capsize.  Seawind catamaran yachts are built on a track record of success.

ERGONOMIC & PRACTICAL

Seawind Catamarans’ sustained success over so many years is built on key features which are part of our DNA. Huge cockpit doors open to combine the saloon and cockpit – a feature unmatched in the market, and which provide expansive and versatile living space.  The new Seawind 1260 enhances this feature further by adding a modular cockpit arrangement. Move chairs and seats to arrange the space as you need it, as circumstances demand.  Seat 8 people inside, and another 8 outside.  Or bring everyone in and make that a dozen inside or easily clear the cockpit for a long passage.  Every Seawind catamaran sailboat provides flexibility and luxury while sacrificing none of the practicality that made previous Seawind Cats models the success they are. Seawind boats also provide unparalleled entertainment space while sacrificing nothing in offshore safety.

PROTECTED SAFE STEERING

Dual helm stations are found on every Seawind Catamarans sailboat, and they offer 360-degree visibility, even on the largest Seawind 1600 model.  This allows the skipper to sail safely in crowded harbor conditions, and to keep an eye on the crew when offshore. Large targa tops offer protection from the harsh offshore conditions, both sun and rain, while panoramic opening windows provide ventilation as well as visibility.  Seawind Catamarans boats offer the protection of a pilothouse yacht, with the visibility and helming advantages of a sailing catamaran.

INDOOR/ OUTDOOR LIVING

The famous Australian indoor / outdoor, open lifestyle is entrenched in Seawind Catamarans designs, with an unbeatable living area complimented by brilliant natural ventilation, protected cockpit lounge, and social helm seats putting the skipper in control as well as in the conversation. Best of all, you can enjoy what many catamaran sailboats compromise on… visibility – for the skipper and crew, with 360 degree views from the helm and saloon seats all within the protection of the fiberglass coachouse and targa top.
