James MIchael Grimes, 28, discusses how he narrowly survived falling off a cruise ship and spending 15 hours in open water on Thanksgiving

James Michael Grimes’ Thanksgiving was unorthodox.

After winning an air guitar contest, he toppled off the side of a cruise ship , battled a "sea creature," treaded water for more than half a day, and survived on bamboo — or maybe just some kind of stick — until the Coast Guard picked him up the next day.

And, according to him, though alcohol was consumed, it did not play a part in the chain of events.

Mr Grimes, 28, survived a harrowing 15 hours at sea that could have turned tragic had he not managed to keep himself afloat while waves washed over him in the Gulf of Mexico .

Mr Grimes and his sister were on a Carnival cruise ship departing from New Orleans and bound for Cozumel, Mexico on 23 November. At some point that evening, Mr Grimes’ sister noticed he had left to use the restroom and had not returned. After failing to return the following day, she reported him missing and, a few hours later, the Coast Guard was notified that the man had vanished.

According to Mr Grimes, who gave an interview to ABC News’ Good Morning America about his ordeal, that night he had just won an air guitar competition in one of the ship’s lounges and had hit the bar to celebrate.

He said he did not have "tons" of drinks and that he "couldn’t really say" how much booze he had actually consumed, but assured the interviewer he was not drunk at the time.

Whatever the case, the next thing he remembers is floating around in the Gulf of Mexico without a ship in sight.

He treaded water for hours, noting during the interview that he was terrified of drowning and was desperate to see his family again.

"I wanted to see my family and I was dead set on making it out of there, you know. I was never accepting that this is it. This is going to be the end of my life," he said during the interview.

As he fought to stay above the waves, Mr Grimes claims he had an encounter with a "sea creature" that he initially worried could have been a shark. He claims the creature had a fin and bumped his leg, spooking him to the point where he felt the need to kick at the animal.

"I thought it was a shark. I mean, I was swimming in one direction and looked around I seen it out the corner of my eye and it came up on me really quick and went under and I could see it and it wasn’t a shark," he said.

He saw the fish had a "flat mouth" just before it bumped him, prompting him to kick at it.

Mr Grimes had nothing to eat or drink for the duration of his time floating in the Gulf. That’s why when a stick that he says "looked like bamboo" floated by him he scooped it up and began chewing on it. Though he has no idea if it provided any nutritional value, he did note that it at least provided the comfort of tasting something other than salt water.

He began to worry as night fell — the water’s temperature cooled, and his body was running out of energy — but he says he remained positive, believing he had survived for a reason.

"You know, the fall didn’t kill me, you know, sea creatures didn’t eat me, I felt like I was meant to get out of there," he said.

And he did; he was eventually spotted by a passing tanker, which notified the US Coast Guard rescuers. The Coast Guard units arrived on scene and, according to one rescuer, likely found Mr Grimes just in time.

Richard Hoefle, a US Coast Guard Aviation Survival Technician, told 4WWL News that Mr Grimes was "at his limit" when they found him.

"Some people break down and cry, some people are in shock, and they don’t know what’s going on, some people are ecstatic and they act a little crazy because they are so happy to be out of the situation that they’re in," Mr Hoefle said, describing typical reactions of individuals who are rescued. "Mr Grimes had nothing left. He had no energy. He had nothing left to give. My best guess is that he had between a minute and 30 seconds left before we lost him completely."

Mr Grimes said he recalled being secured by Mr Hoefle and remembers "just thinking ‘thank you, you are like a guardian angel.’"

The Coast Guard transported Mr Grimes to a hospital in New Orleans. He was treated for hypothermia and dehydration, and has since been released.

Mr Grimes told Good Morning America that the experience "opened my eyes" and taught him to be mindful of that which he takes for granted. It also left him lacking a proper cruise experience.

"I definitely would be open to go on another cruise," he said, "because I really didn’t get to go on this one."

A man has died after falling off a yacht in the English Channel.

The incident happened in waters off the northwest of France at around 2pm on Friday.

A nearby fishing vessel went to the scene to assist French rescue teams, while the UK Coastguard offered communications support.

Coastguard said the victim - who has not been identified but is from the Greater Manchester area - was taken to a hospital in the port city of Le Havre by a French helicopter.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Sussex Police were made aware of a man having sadly died in the English Channel after falling from a yacht in French waters in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"The incident is understood to have happened at around 2pm on Friday.

"Police are supporting the coastguard by offering liaison with the man's family and will continue to offer support to the relevant agencies while the full circumstances of the situation are established."

It is reported another sailor from the same vessel was rescued safely by French lifeboat crews.

Last week, an 18-year-old from Louisiana went overboard  from a boat during a sunset cruise in the Bahamas, authorities said. The U.S. Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force searched for the teen, identified as Cameron Robbins, who apparently jumped off the boat. He was on a trip to celebrate his high school graduation.

The coast guard called off their search on May 27, they said in a news release.

Another Carnival cruise ship got caught in a tumultuous storm off the coast of South Carolina on Monday. Passengers said glass shattered, water poured in and the ship pitched. They also said there was a lack of communication from the staff during the frightening ordeal, which lasted hours.

Some people on board needed "minor assistance" from medical staff, and "guests on board the ship were safe," a Carnival cruise spokesman told CBS News.

Southern California boater Scott Thompson who fell into the Santa Barbara Channel and was helped by a nudging seal.

His fate was seal-ed.

A California man thought he would die when he fell off his fishing boat and into the frigid Pacific Ocean — but a friendly harbor seal showed up in the nick of time and helped get him to safety.

Scott Thompson, a sea urchin diver, blamed a lapse in judgment for the mishap that sent him falling off his boat into the Santa Barbara Channel in the middle of the night last month.

“I thought to myself, ‘Great, this is how I’m going to die. Today is the day I’m going to die,’” Thompson, who was wearing nothing but his shorts and T-shirt at the time, told KABC-TV .

Thompson said he left the boat’s motor running and it quickly got away from him.

“That’s when I realized, like, ‘OK, we got problems,’” he said. “And I just started swimming as hard as I could, towards the boat, and it really didn’t take too long to realize like, it’s getting farther, I’m not getting closer.”

Thompson said that’s when he began to fear for his life.

“The panic set in, it was like, ‘Wow! This is a pretty heavy situation,’” he said, adding that he kept telling himself to keep swimming.

While in survival mode, he said, he kept repeating, “You gotta get home to your family.”

“I was devastating myself, through my mind, just picturing my girls and my son growing up without me, and my wife, you know, not having a husband to support her,” Thompson told KABC.

But he said all of a sudden, he heard a big splash — which he assumed was a shark.

“When I heard that splash, my heart jumped out of my chest, and I was like, F—!  A shark!” he recalled in a lengthy post on Peter Maguire’s blog “Sour Milk.”

“Just then, a little seal popped its head out of the water right next to me, and looked at me like, Dude! What are you doing out here?”

With no one else for Thomson to turn to, the seal became his “best buddy,” he said.

“He was like my dog. ‘Come here, little buddy!’ I said. He’d bob up and down looking at me, then disappear under water, pop back up, and look at me,” Thompson recounted.

He said the little pup bumped him several times in the butt as if to prod him on.

“It was like he was telling me, Hey, Dude! Get your a– in gear and get going! I was starting to run out of things to say to him, so I sang him Grateful Dead songs and told him the same corny dad jokes that I tell my kids,” he wrote.

Buoyed by the cheering creature, Thompson felt determined to swim to an oil platform, which he reached after about five hours, KABC reported.

“It started getting brighter and I’m just like, I’m crying. And I’m like, shouting at the sky,” he told the station. Crew members on the rig provided first aid before the Coast Guard got him to a hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia.

Adorable Harbor Seal popping his head out of the water at Robert Moses State Park on Long Island in winter.

“Even putting on a wet suit, being prepared, getting in that water, and swimming to the platform was horrendous,” Paul Amaral, president of towing company Channel Watch Marine told KABC.

“I can’t imagine being in the water with shorts and a T-shirt at night. There was no moon, I mean it was pitch black,” he said.

In his post, Thompson wrote: “I’m a believer that there is a higher power now. I don’t know what it is, but there is a power greater than me. That was shown to me and I will never doubt that for the rest of my life.”

Will Fransen, who survived 24 hours in ocean after falling overboard off Coromandel Peninsula, describes ordeal

Melissa Nightingale

A man who fell off his boat and survived 24 hours floating alone in the ocean before using his watch to signal to rescuers says he “wasn’t meant to go yet”.

Cambridge 61-year-old Will Fransen said he tried and failed multiple times to catch the attention of passing boats after he fell overboard, and was “pessimistic” from the start at his chances of survival off Whangamatā and the Coromandel Peninsula.

Fransen had set off on a solo fishing trip on January 2 on his 12m boat, with plans to return the next day.

He had hooked and tagged a marlin and was about to release it back into the ocean when everything went horribly wrong.

He cannot recall if he had lifted the rail on his boat or if it had come out on its own, but with the movement of the ocean and the fish, he lost his balance and fell out of the open safety rail.

“The next thing I was in the water with the boat idling.”

He tried to swim back to the boat but within a few strokes realised it was moving away from him too quickly.

“I grabbed the line with the marlin attached and started pulling the line out. I tried pulling my way towards the boat only to have the line slip out of my hand, which is pretty gutting, because next thing my boat’s idling over the horizon and I’m treading water.”

He was about 30 nautical miles, or 55km, east of the North Island and would end up drifting a long way south, to Mayor Island in the Bay of Plenty.

Fransen had managed to keep a hold of his hat in the fall and tried to wave it and yell at passing boats, with no success.

He was not wearing a life jacket but had on a harness that had some level of buoyancy to it.

He then tried to swim towards the nearby Alderman Islands, but soon realised the current was taking him in the opposite direction.

“I gave up and just treaded water and watched the beautiful sunset overhead.”

Will Fransen did not expect to survive his time in the ocean.

At some point in the ordeal, Fransen saw a fin appear in the water nearby and spotted a shark.

“Fortunately it decided it wasn’t interested. It would have been a good couple of metres so it could have easily dealt to me.”

The shark stayed in Fransen’s mind for some time. Every time he touched a bit of seaweed he was startled.

As the night wore on he reflected on family, friends and life, and regularly hoisted his harness into the air to drain water from it, hoping it would be buoyant enough to keep him afloat after his death.

He wanted it to be easy to find his body so his children would be able to cash in his life insurance policy, he said.

“I would have given any money for a life jacket. I thought I was safe in the boat because the rails were up.”

Fransen trod water through the night, not sleeping, drifting many kilometres south until he ended up close to Mayor Island/Tuhua.

The weather conditions in the morning were rougher than the previous day, and he knew there were unlikely to be many boats out.

Fransen fought to keep his head above water as waves crashed over him. He ended up swallowing seawater and was shivering in the cooler temperatures.

“When I went in the water I knew the chances of somebody even knowing I was in the water were pretty slim. I was pretty pessimistic from the outset,” he said. “I just kept staying alive.”

Max White (left), James McDonnell and Tyler Taffs were fishing near Mayor Island when they came across a man who had been floating in the sea for 24 hours after falling off his boat.

He eventually saw another boat and thought he would try to use his watch to catch the sun’s reflection and shine it at the boat.

“As I was trying to get my arm up I would just go underwater. So that boat duly motored away. Then something changed. The wind stopped, the sea got a bit calmer.”

Fransen had been hallucinating throughout the day, often seeing boats where there were none.

“I imagined plenty of them.”

But then he saw three young men game fishing nearby, and this time someone saw the light he was reflecting off his watch.

“Oh, the relief. Oh, just, yeah, I thought, ‘Well, it’s over’.

“I wasn’t meant to go yet.

“James, who was driving ... in his words, he said, ‘I saw this waving arm and thought, well, there’s not supposed to be any waving arms out here.’”

Will Fransen was near the Alderman Islands when he fell out of his boat. Photo / The Coromandel

James McDonnell, Max White and Tyler Taffs motored over to Fransen and pulled him from the water, wrapping him in everything they could find to bring his temperature up. Fransen sculled warm bottles of water and cranberry juice.

“They immediately headed for home at high speed.”

Fransen’s face was burned from the sun’s reflection off the water, and his legs, arms and joints were sore from treading water, but he was able to walk to the waiting ambulance when they arrived at Whangamatā.

He said he had McDonald’s and a Heineken as soon as he got out of hospital.

Fransen is still hopeful he can get his boat back, as it idles out to the Pacific. He has two planes looking for the boat, including one he chartered himself.

He wanted to thank everyone who helped him, including the emergency responders.

Max White, the skipper of the boat that came to Fransen’s rescue, said he and his friends were out near Mayor Island for a day of game fishing.

“One of my mates saw a glimmer of what ended up being his watch.”

The group headed over to investigate and as they got closer, White told his friends he thought it was “a human” floating in the water.

“It’s not something you expect to see 10 miles off the back of Mayor Island.”

He said it was “a bit silly” but the first thing he asked Fransen was whether he was all right.

“I guess in those circumstances you’re probably not all right.”

He recalled Fransen’s first words to him as being something along the lines of “glad to see you”.

“He was super cold, severely dehydrated.”

As Fransen started sharing his story, the group were surprised to hear he had been in the water “since yesterday” and had drifted a long way from the Alderman Islands.

“He was able to recall his story. It was a bit eye-opening for us.”

He suspected he had hooked a marlin before falling overboard.

White said that after a day’s fishing “you always expect to come home expecting to talk about the fish that you saw and the fish that you caught”.

To be able to go home and tell his family he had helped rescue a man from the water was a whole new situation.

Hearing this morning that Fransen was doing well was heartening for White.

“He recalled I guess his night in terms of being circled by a shark for a while there. He had been awake for nearly two days, I guess you don’t want to be sleeping if you’re trying to keep yourself afloat.”

The incident had been a good reminder about water safety.

White said people should make sure to tell others where they were going and when to expect them back. And they should make sure they had the necessary gear and it was accessible to them.

“Freak accidents do happen.”

White was thankful his friends had seen the reflection from Fransen’s watch and decided to investigate.

They had all thought about the “what ifs”, but were glad they had gone to check.

“We were just the right boat at the right time.”

Man bitten by crocodile in Florida Everglades after capsizing sailboat, falling in water

A 68-year-old man fell of a sailboat at a marina in the Florida Everglades and was bitten by a crocodile as he tried to swim to shore, authorities said.

The rare crocodile bite occurred Sunday afternoon at the Flamingo Marina in Everglades National Park and left the man, who was visiting the park, with a laceration to one leg that required medical attention, the National Park Service said.

The Everglades is one of the largest wetlands in the world and according to the National Wildlife Foundation, is the only place in the world where American crocodiles and American alligators co-exist. There are about 1.8 million alligators in Florida but only 2,000 crocodiles.

The man capsized his sailboat in the marina basin and was trying to swim to land with his boat when witnesses saw him go under the water, officials said. Park rangers responded and treated the cut on the man’s leg before he was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

No further information was released on the man’s condition.

It’s rare for an American crocodile to bite a human, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The only other documented case involving a crocodile biting a human happened in 2014, Lauren Claerbout, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in an email.

It’s also rare for alligators to bite humans , Claerbout said. In Florida, there are about eight unprovoked alligators bites to humans annually.

Crocodiles are a federally threatened species. They have narrower, more triangular heads and often prefer coastal, brackish and salt water, while alligators are darker, have broader snouts and are typically found in freshwater,

Rangers and park biologists were investigating the attack and monitoring the suspected crocodile.

The Coast Guard called off a search for a man who went overboard during a heavy-metal 'Headbangers Boat' cruise

  • A man fell overboard while on a heavy-metal themed "Headbangers Boat" cruise, WTVJ first reported .
  • The 41-year-old fell fom the ship, the Norwegian Pearl, Friday morning.
  • The US Coast Guard reportedly called off the search nine hours later.

Insider Today

A 41-year-old man fell overboard early Friday morning while on a heavy-metal-themed "Headbangers Boat" cruise, according to Miami news outlet WTVJ .

Per the outlet, the man fell Friday while the ship, the Norwegian Pearl, was sailing near the Bahamas on its way back to Miami. The US Coast Guard initiated a search, but it was called off after nine hours, according to trade publication CruiseHive .

On Monday, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the search was called off in a statement to Insider.

Related stories

"On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami," the spokesperson said. "The authorities were immediately notified and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation went underway. After an extensive search in cooperation with the United States Coast Guard it was unfortunately unsuccessful. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time."

Representatives for the US Coast Guard and the Headbangers Boat did not respond to Insider's requests for comment.

The Headbangers Boat set sail on October 31 and returned to Miami on November 4. According to its website , the cruise was an "immersive, hell-raising hurrah" for heavy metal fans. Lamb of God, the headlining band, told music publication Louder that they were "deeply saddened" by the news on Saturday.

"We're deeply saddened to have learned that a member of our community was involved in a tragic incident," the statement read. "Sending love and light to their family and loved ones."

The odds of going overboard on a cruise ship are low: Between 2009 and 2019, 212 such incidents were identified by the Cruise Lines International Association . However, just 28.2% of those falls resulted in a successful rescue.

As Insider previously reported, at least nine people have fallen overboard on cruise ships this year. Of those, only two have survived .

Most recently, on October 29, a passenger of Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas went overboard as the ship departed Barcelona. A spokesperson for the cruise line told Insider that the ship turned around, and the person was found.

"The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest," the spokesperson said. "Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board."

Man bitten by crocodile in Florida Everglades after capsizing sailboat, falling in water

H OMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — A 68-year-old man fell of a sailboat at a marina in the Florida Everglades and was bitten by a crocodile as he tried to swim to shore, authorities said.

No further information was released on the man's condition.

It's rare for an American crocodile to bite a human, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The only other documented case involving a crocodile biting a human happened in 2014, Lauren Claerbout, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in an email.

It's also rare for alligators to bite humans , Claerbout said.

Unresponsive man pulled from Boston harbor after falling off tanker ship

The crew of a commercial fishing boat recovered an unresponsive man who had fallen overboard from a tanker ship and began CPR before the Coast Guard rushed him to shore for medical care, officials said.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Boston responded to a call at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday that a crew member fell off the MTM Dublin who issued a mayday.

The search took place in pitch-dark conditions and rough seas near Boston Harbor, and the America found the crew member after being the first vessel on the scene, said Petty Officer Lyric Jackson, a Coast Guard spokesperson.

“We’re really luck that he was found. I don’t know why we did, but we did. We just happened to see his orange vest in the water,” America’s captain Bryant Moulton said.

Fisherman John Abraham, a friend of the America’s crew,  said finding the man with flashlights, was like finding a needle in a haystack.

“That’s all they had,” Abraham said. “Some of (the boats) have big spotlights but they didn’t have spotlights,” Abraham said.

The man was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water and crews performed CPR on the man as they were rushing him back to the harbor, where he was transported to a local Boston hospital, a Boston EMS spokesperson says.

“They did CPR all the way to the dock. And that was like a 45-minute, hour ride or more. They never stopped, never stopped,” Moulton said.

There is no details on how the fisherman fell overboard, but crew members tell Boston 25 that it’s close to a 40-foot drop into the water.

The MTM Dublin is a chemical tanker, according to marinetraffic.com.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

Passenger hospitalized after falling off charter boat on Miami River

MIAMI (WSVN) - First responders worked to save a person’s life after, officials said, they fell off a charter boat and into the Miami River.

Cellphone video captured City of Miami Fire Rescue crews pulling the victim out of the water, Sunday afternoon.

“The area where this all took place is right as you’re approaching the Brickell Bridge,” said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll. “Obviously, since it’s St. Patrick’s Day, they had a lot of boating traffic.”

Officials said the incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. A group of people on the charter boat called 911 after they saw one of their passengers go overboard.

“She said that she saw [the passenger] fall over, and as they attempted to turn the boat around, they saw another boat that may have struck [the passenger],” said Carroll.

When paramedics arrived, officials said, witnesses pointed out where the passenger, who 7News has learned is in their mid-20s, fell.

Although the water was deep, rescue divers were able to find the person quickly and pull them out.

More cellphone video shows first responders immediately starting CPR.

Paramedics transported the victim to Ryder Trauma Center in extremely critical condition.

As of late Sunday night, it’s unknown whether or not anyone will face any charges.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the incident.

How this man survived treading water for 29 hours after being lost at sea

Brett Archibald will never forget the feeling of doom while watching a charter boat sail away into darkness after he fell overboard in the Indian Ocean while on a trip with friends.

"I've got goosebumps just reliving it,'' he told TODAY. "And then I lifted my head and just realized, 'You're never going to catch a boat.' And (I) just knew it was over."

It was the beginning of an odyssey of survival for the then-50-year-old South African father of two, who battled sharks, jellyfish, dehydration and hallucinations while treading water for almost 29 hours.

Archibald recounted his incredible tale for the final installment of TODAY's True Grit series . He also documented the experience in his book, "Alone: Lost Overboard in the Indian Ocean."

It began on a surfing trip with friends in the Mentawai Strait near Indonesia's West Sumatra province in April 2013.

One night, he and some friends got severe food poisoning. In the middle of the night, amid rain and wind, he got up from bed to get sick over the side of the boat. He became dizzy, lost his footing, and plunged into the sea.

Man survives being lost at sea.

No one had seen him fall overboard. His first thought was that he was going to die.

"I knew it,'' he said. "There was no shadow of a doubt."

Archibald started to do the math, figuring it would be at least seven hours until his friends realized he was missing and about another seven hours until they were able to return to his location.

As Archibald floated in the ocean, he began to talk to God.

"The first conversations were very anger-driven,'' he said. "I scream. I can't even use the profanities that I used in that ocean.

"And then they evolved to reassessing my life. I reflected, I hadn't been a good person. I thought I was a great father and husband, but when I was faced with reality, I hadn't been."

He then started reciting cell phone contacts and singing Elton John songs while swimming with the current to keep his mind occupied.

Man survives being lost at sea.

As the hours passed, he began to fight cramps, dehydration and the stings of jellyfish. Eventually, he began hallucinating.

"It was like a rainbow with no color coming out the sea, but then it was the Virgin Mary,'' he said. "It was bizarre. I knew it wasn't real."

Archibald thought a miracle rescue was about to happen when he saw the charter boat in the distance. He started screaming and waving.

"They weren't even as far as the length of this room,'' he said. "And then they sailed away."

That realization was crushing.

"I just lost it,'' he said. "I screamed at the world. I screamed at life."

It was at about that time that he felt a shark bump into him from below.

"I said, 'Okay, I want to meet my end,' and I went under the water,'' he said. "I just remember seeing him, going, 'Oh my God,' because magnified under the water, I thought it was the size of the red bus (in London)."

It turned out to be a blacktip reef shark that eventually lost interest and swam away. Following that encounter, Archibald decided he could not go on any longer.

"So I said all my goodbyes, swam down,'' he said. "I remember lying on my back and just going, 'Okay, just breathe.' And I just took a huge breath."

He started choking on the water and then swam to the surface, thinking he was seeing a vision of a black cross. It turned out to be the mast of the Barrenjoey, a boat that had joined the search party.

A hunch by Australian skipper Tony "Doris" Etherington about Archibald's whereabouts had paid off. After 28 1/2 hours at sea, he was rescued.

A medic onboard estimated that he only had about another hour to live if he wasn't rescued. Archibald lost 13 pounds during the ordeal.

Incredibly, he went back out on the surfing charter boat the very next day. He believes he was spared in order to change his life.

"And (to) share this story,'' he said. "Because life is short, and if you don't live it well, you have regrets. I had 28 hours of regrets, and I've got a second chance."

SEE IT: Video Shows Louisiana Teen Moments After Jumping from Cruise Ship, Search Called Off

man falling off yacht

A video has surfaced showing boat passengers in the Bahamas moments after an 18-year-old Louisiana star baseball player jumped off the ship in response to a dare, resulting in a fatal outcome.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Cameron Robbins, who had just graduated from University Laboratory School (U-High), jumped off the boat as a dare on May 24. A video obtained by DailyMail showed Robbins splashing in the water near the boat before he vanished.

At the time, Robbins and students from other schools were on a graduation trip at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau.

At 11:30 p.m. on May 24, Royal Bahamas Defence Force personnel contacted watchstanders from Coast Guard District Seven, informing them that someone had fallen off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise ship.

According to a witness, crews made multiple unsuccessful attempts to locate Robbins as the boat, resembling a pirate ship, stayed in the area for several hours. On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard called the search off , according to CBS 9.

#FinalUpdate press release: https://t.co/WyAamjsWl6 — USCGSoutheast (@USCGSoutheast) May 27, 2023

U-High baseball coach Justin Morgan issued a statement following the tragedy.

“Cameron is a kid who is truly loved by his teammates, teachers, and fellow classmates. He is a fierce competitor on the baseball field. He is a hard worker both on and off of the playing field. Our school community is struggling right now but hoping for the very best. Our thoughts and prayers have been and will remain with the Robbins family during this difficult time.”

The marine beacon sailor David Simpson was found on

Man found clinging to ocean beacon after falling off boat in Queensland

David Simpson rescued three hours after his yacht was discovered run aground between Bribie Island and Caloundra

A man has been found clinging on to a marine beacon after he fell from his boat into the sea off Queensland’s Sunshine Coast .

Emergency services scrambled to find the man after his 13-metre yacht was discovered run aground between the northern tip of Bribie Island and Caloundra at about 4pm on Tuesday.

The yacht still had its engine running and a dog and phone onboard, sparking an extensive air and sea search in nearby waterways.

The experienced sailor, David Simpson, told Channel Nine’s Today show he was thrown off his boat when a strong wave hit.

“The wave hit the side of the boat and I was trying to secure the dinghy, which had come a little bit adrift and a rope broke holding the dinghy,” he said.

“The dinghy hit me (on) my ribs and I fell about 2.5, three metres off the boat.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland jet skiers, a Westpac Life Saver Rescue helicopter, water police and coastguard members joined in the search. Officials said that up to 30 people took part in the search.

Authorities said they found the 64-year-old man at around 7pm, clinging to a marine beacon in the ocean, some 2.5km off Bribie Island. The man had swum about 2km to reach the beacon and climbed a ladder onto a platform.

Senior Constable Mark Muddiman from Sunshine Coast water police said that bar some minor injuries, the man was in good health.

“It was a pretty dramatic rescue,” he said.

“He was obviously happy to see us and to be rescued. He didn’t want to spend the night on one of those beacons. He was pretty overjoyed, but upset that his boat is still on the beach.”

Lifeguards had earlier found the man’s yacht washed up in shallow waters near Caloundra and Bribie Island.

Authorities said the man used the beacon to attract attention, by covering it with his hands and attempting to communicate an SOS to passing ships.

It was a container ship transiting through that picked up the man’s attempted message.

Muddiman said the man was on the beacon for around three hours, and it was his smart decision to use it that eventually led to his rescue.

“That’s what actually ended up showing us where he was, which is fantastic. It was through good observation by the ship that alerted us to where he was.

“He’s very, very lucky. Some of these jobs don’t end as well as this one, and we’re really glad it ended for the best.”

Authorities were baffled when they found the empty ship ashore, but used the man’s last phone call to narrow the search area. Emergency crews were working to retrieve the boat.

Coastguards told the ABC the man had been trying to secure something to his boat when he was flung off his vessel.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast regional operations manager, Aaron Purchase, said it was an “odd” case, but he was happy the man was found alive.

“Things have gone astray and caused him to go overboard … it’s odd but we’re very thankful he was found alive at the end of the day.

“We’ve seen smaller vessels that have capsized but nothing ever of that size that’s run aground under its own speed. It’s certainly a strange one, but thankfully everyone is OK out of it.”

Muddiman said the rescue was a good reminder to boat owners to ensure safety precautions were taken before and during any trip.

“The things we can take out of this is that it’s prudent to wear your life jacket, especially if you’re on the boat by yourself.

“Life jackets is the number one thing, make sure you have them on your boat. If you are out by yourself, it would make sense to have you life jacket on at all times, because you never know.”

Man bitten by crocodile in Florida Everglades after capsizing sailboat, falling in water

Associated Press

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A 68-year-old man fell of a sailboat at a marina in the Florida Everglades and was bitten by a crocodile as he tried to swim to shore, authorities said.
