UPDATE: Figawi Race postponed to Sunday in Hyannisport

Update: Figawi Race announced Friday afternoon that all Saturday races have been postponed to Sunday due to inclement weather conditions. The J. David Crawford High School Invitational has been moved to Friday at 2 p.m.

This weekend’s Figawi Race will look a bit different than the annual sailing regatta has in the past. There’ll be no journey to Nantucket, no raucous party under the big tent Saturday night on the island. 

Still, there will be a race. Two, actually, as the event will divide up competition between Saturday and Sunday. 

Considering the coronavirus pandemic canceled the event in its entirety last year, Figawi Board of Directors Chairman Chris Standish is focused on the excitement of simply having back the Cape’s signature sailing event.  

"The core of our long-tenured racers said ‘We just want to get on the water and race,’ so that’s what we’re doing,” Standish said. "If the weather gods smile on us just even a little bit, we’ll have a great race on Saturday and Sunday.” 

The Figawi is a pursuit regatta, meaning not all boats will leave the Hyannisport jetty near the Hyannis Yacht Club (HYC) at the same time. Each day’s races will begin at 10 a.m., with boats all leaving from and then returning to HYC instead of ending their days on the island. 

Planning an event like this takes months. Standish said his team began planning this year’s edition of the 50-year-old race back in January, and at that time Nantucket just wasn’t a possible finish line. 

"None of us want to put anybody in an uncomfortable position, (and) none of us want to walk away feeling like may we contributed to some kind of COVID hotspot,” Standish said. “The logistics for this event starts around New Year’s. At that point, Nantucket was not even entertaining any permits. Once you get into February, it’s too late to do anything.” 

Turnout this year is smaller than it normally would be. Standish said 84 boats are registered, which translates to about 500 sailors. In past years the Figawi brought in around 200 boats. 

Celebrations still will take place after racing finishes each day, just not at a single location. Trader Ed’s and Tugboats on the Hyannis Marina will host events Saturday night, and both locations, as well as HYC and Baxter’s, will host Sunday night. 

"This will be a big boon for a lot of people,” Standish said. “We can’t wait to get back to Nantucket and have Figawi be the way it’s been for the last 40-plus years. But we’re trying to do the best we can, and we’re trying to get the people back on the water.” 

High school sailing teams will notice something different when they compete in their own invitational race at the Figawi on Saturday (or Sunday in the case of inclement weather). The race has been renamed the J. David Crawford High School Invitational and teams will sail around Lewis Bay in a race for the inaugural Crawford Cup. 

"How do you bring the new generation of sailors into the big event, so that when they grow up and someone says, ‘Hey, you want to do Figawi on a big boat with me, they say, ‘Yeah, I do!’” said Andrew Nugnes, a member of the Figawi Board of Directors and a former sailor and then sailing coach at Barnstable High School. “That was the whole concept that Howard Penn and George Bassett came up with back in 2000: How do we create more buzz for the younger sailors to continue to do this?” 

Crawford, who died in April, served as chairman and later treasurer for the Figawi. He also was a Commodore of the HYC and played an active role in the development of youth sailing on Cape Cod. 

"David was unbelievable,” Nugnes said. “It just seemed like he had this positive spirit about not only sailing or sports in general but just the youth and making sure those traditions kept going.” 

Barnstable is one of 13 high school teams that will compete for the Crawford Cup, and the Cape will have representatives from the bridges all the way down to the Outer Cape and Islands. The 12 Cape teams are Bourne, Barnstable, Cape Cod Academy, Dennis-Yarmouth, Falmouth, Martha’s Vineyard, Monomoy, Nauset, Nantucket, St. John Paul II, Sandwich, and Sturgis, and they’ll be joined by Dartmouth as the lone off-Cape entrant. 

Nantucket is the defending champion from 2019. 

"Team racing and fleet racing, they’re different, and they’re both exciting and fun in their own way,” said D-Y sailing coach Jeff Howell. “In team racing, you’re working against the other boats on the other team and you’re using the rules for your benefit. Whereas in fleet racing, you’re just trying to sail as fast as you can and get around the course first.” 

The Crawford Invitational will also give more young sailors a chance to experience Figawi than in previous years. There’ll be two separate divisions of the Invitational, and Nugnes said teams will be allowed to enter up to eight sailors. 

"We’re super excited that the sailors are going to get this opportunity,” said CCA athletic director Jeff Conlon. “Typically, our sailing program competes on a more regional level. … This really gives our more experienced sailors, and our younger sailors, an opportunity to have something that feels like that.”
