The 8 Best New British Yachts on the Water, From Sunseeker to Fairline

Quality among the top u.k. builders is always a given. it's the range of yacht designs that may surprise you..

Pearl 72

As an island, boats have always been the lifeblood of Great Britain. And many British yacht builders continue to uphold the country’s proud naval and maritime traditions. While there are a handful of superyacht builders, the UK isn’t known for eye-wateringly huge megayachts or avant-garde design—though that has changed as its largest international brands compete with the style-obsessed Ferretti Group and Azimut brands.

But what you do find with the Brits is well engineered vessels with a high level of attention to detail in both the interior and exterior design. From semi-custom motoryacht builders like Princess and Sunseeker to the rarefied realm of a highly sought-after Pascoe limousine, there’s something here for nearly every yachtsman.

And thanks to enduring popularity, there is nearly always a British-built sailboat from the Oyster yard, somewhere just over the horizon. In fact, whether you’re cruising the waters of the Caribbean, New England, or the South of France, you’ll find U.K. brands along with the highest luxury offerings from Italy and Northern Europe.

Here are seven of Britain’s finest, newest, and most noteworthy vessels on the water.

Project Fox, Pendennis Shipyard

english sailing yachts

This 114-foot explorer yacht, overseen by project manager Burgess and in build at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, was designed around the owner’s wishes. It has a rugged exterior that will be paired with a bright, contemporary interior by QLondon Design. The owner told Robb Report that he plans to cruise off-grid to remote areas like Norway for heli-skiing with his family and friends (thus necessitating five large staterooms). But he also wanted family-friendly features like a sun terrace, wine lobby, open-air barbecue, and DJ station. Of course, the real breakthrough here: The open stern, measuring more than 1,100 square feet can carry a large complement of toys and tenders, but also scientific equipment (the interior has space for a modular lab) for when the yacht is hosting research scientists. “Flexible cabins and connectivity are key,” said the owner.

The ubiquitous model of the Pearl lineup, the 72 received a creative new interior design earlier this year with the addition of a stateroom that gives it two master suites. The U.K. yard has always been high on haute design, offering different palettes by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, but this double-master suite idea is a first for this size of motoryacht. The yard has recently won awards for the naval architecture of its 95, which approaches superyacht status, and it will be launching a new 85-foot flybridge next year.

Fairline Targa 40

english sailing yachts

Fairline is also among England’s internationally renowned yacht brands, famous for seaworthy hulls and top-tier creature comforts. It hasn’t built yachts as large as competitors Princess and Sunseeker but has been equally creative with the design. The new Targa 40’s cockpit is a case in point. It has an enticing exterior layout, with the cockpit featuring a foldout terrace to starboard and a U-shaped dining settee to port facing the rest of the deck, not to mention the two sun lounges on the stern. The 40 is effectively a dayboat, but with two staterooms, it also works as a family weekender. There’s a master in the forepeak and guest cabin amidships which is best suited for children. The galley below decks is also very functional. Top speed for the Targa is 36 knots with the optional Volvo Penta D6-380 upgrades.

Princess Y80

english sailing yachts

Along with Sunseeker, Princess Yachts is the other heavyweight of British yacht building. These cruisers and motoryachts have proven to be perennial favorites on both sides of the Atlantic. The Y80 debuting at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival looks to continue the tradition. The Y80 brings to the table an “infinity cockpit” with a glass transom and modular furniture for multiple setups. It also has a flybridge that spans about two-thirds of the yacht’s nearly 84-foot length, effectively creating a legitimate third deck. The Y80’s owner’s stateroom is amidships and full beam, while it has a VIP in the forepeak. Two other guest cabins are to port and starboard. The Y80 has an impressive top speed of 30 knots, but at 10 knots the range is an even more impressive 1,000 nautical miles.

Cockwells Duchy Sport

english sailing yachts

The 37-foot Duchy Sport from the Cockwells’ yard in Cornwall, famous internationally for its custom tenders, is designed for watersports enthusiasts. This Sport offers multiple towing points for waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing, with interior space for nine guests. Bow and cockpit sunpads will be popular spots for tanning, while a Bimini covers the amidships. Standout features include a wetbar, retractable swim ladder, bowthruster with joystick control, and of course ample water-toy stowage. The Duchy Sport comes with twin 370 hp Yanmar 8LVs which can get it up to a top speed of 42 knots—a speed befitting of this model’s name. Cockwells is also building a new Duchy 60, a stylized motoryacht that should rival Downeast offerings from U.S. builders Hinckley and Malaysian builder Grand Banks.

english sailing yachts

The Oyster 495 is a 52-foot, 8-inch sailing yacht that entered the U.S. market earlier this year. A new design from the keel up, the U.K. builder was thinking global circumnavigation, or at least serious offshore cruising, from the onset. The yacht is also meant to be able to be singlehanded by a capable sailor. The plumb bow and teak decks imbue the 495 with a definite saltiness with performance and aesthetics. The cabin is noteworthy for being both ergonomic and well-lit. Reported top speeds for the 495 crest the 10-knot mark under sail, while a 100 hp Yanmar diesel pushes it along happily at 9.5 knots.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55

english sailing yachts

Sunseeker is one of England’s brands that has a global following. For good reason. The Poole builder has a range of vessels that extend from 38 to 161 feet. Sunseeker is known for good oceangoing performance and creative design. The Superhawk 55 is a reimagining of the Superhawks that enjoyed popularity with performance enthusiasts in the 1990s and Aughts before being discontinued in 2009. Sunseeker introduced the Superhawk 38 in 2020, which had echoes of its go-fast past. This 55, however, is more of a performance cruiser than a day boat. With twin Volvo Penta IPS950s the new Superhawk has a very respectable top end of 38 knots and a feature even Miami Vice hot-boat aficionados will appreciate—slow-speed maneuverability offered by pod propulsion. An aggressively raked profile complemented by stiletto-sharp hullside windows augment the Superhawk’s sporty vibe.

Pascoe E-Limousine Electric Tender

english sailing yachts

Pascoe tenders reside in the garages of some of the world’s biggest and most glamorous superyachts, thanks to the yard’s dedication to customization. The E-Limousine is the builder’s first fully electric vessel, the result of six years of R&D. Top speed is reported to be an impressive 40 knots, with a range of 60 nautical miles at a fast cruise of 20 knots. The builder says not only is this boat greener than a traditional tender but will also offer a smoother, quieter ride thanks to the construction used to mitigate vibration.

Sailing the English Channel for the first time

  • Andy Du Port
  • June 1, 2022

Sailing the English Channel requires planning and preparation, but if you haven’t done it before, it’s easier than you might think, says Andy Du Port

english sailing yachts

Sailing the English Channel for the first time can be a daunting prospect, especially if your sailing experience so far has been in local waters, mostly remaining within a few miles offshore. However, so long as you thoroughly prepare yourself, your crew and your boat, a Channel crossing should be a relaxed and enjoyable experience, with all the attractions associated with ‘going foreign’.

In this article I have assumed that your knowledge is at least that of an RYA Day Skipper and that your boat is seaworthy and capable of offshore passages. That is, she is certified as Category A (Ocean) or B (Offshore) and suitably equipped.

There is a list of recommended equipment which you should have on board in the safety chapter in Reeds Nautical Almanac (affiliate link). Clearly, there is not room here to cover every aspect of planning and executing a cross-Channel passage.

Your First Channel Crossing  (affiliate link), published by Adlard Coles Nautical goes into far more detail and, though I say so myself, is well worth reading. The only significant changes since the book was published in 2013 are related to evolving entry and exit formalities as a result of Brexit .

Plan your trip around good weather and a crossing can be thoroughly enjoyable. Photo: Theo Stocker/YM

Sailing the English Channel from the Solent to Cherbourg is about 65 miles and is the equivalent of a return trip from Portsmouth to Poole. Most cruising yachts will make the passage in 12-15 hours – easily done in daylight during the summer months.

What follows is equally relevant for any Channel crossing route or other offshore passage of about the same distance.

Sailing the English Channel – Forward planning

Your top concern before setting off is likely to be the weather. Whatever your experience, no one wants to bash into a Force 5 for 12 hours only to arrive tired, cold, wet and miserable.

A typical husband and wife crew in a 35ft yacht will probably draw the line at Force 3-4 on the nose or perhaps Force 4-5 if off the wind.

Good visibility, and ideally sunshine, is a bonus, so you need to study the forecasts for several days ahead and pick your time. Whatever you do, don’t fall into the trap of sailing to a deadline and taking unnecessary risks.

Your reputation as a skipper will be greatly enhanced if you wisely decide to abandon a trip rather than compromise safety or invite mutiny. Postponing your departure is far less demoralising than beating a retreat with your tail between your legs.

Have a grab bag ready including a PLB or EPIRB if you have one. Photo: Theo Stocker/YM

Preparing for your first Channel crossing

There is some equipment which you need for an offshore passage which might not already be on board.

A liferaft should be carried. They are expensive to buy but hiring one for a short period is a viable and much cheaper option.

A fully inflated dinghy on deck and ready to launch is a poor substitute, and is not recommended. If that is your choice, don’t even think of towing it. Not only will it reduce your speed through the water (even ¼ knot over 60 miles will add more than 30 minutes to the passage time), the chances of it misbehaving or going AWOL are not worth contemplating.

A grab bag should be prepared and stowed readily to hand. Contents should include: handheld VHF radio , EPIRB/PLB if carried, handheld GPS receiver (if not incorporated in the radio), seasickness pills, any essential medication, torches, flares and water.

Some of these may already be included in the liferaft contents. The addition of passports, wallets and ship’s papers would greatly ease the admin pain later.

english sailing yachts

Laser flares and a PLB offer a good alternative to traditional pyrotechnics

Flares are potentially dangerous and you can only carry a limited number anyhow. LED ‘flares’, which have many hours of active use, are becoming popular.

A Radar reflector is a requirementof SOLAS V and must be carried ‘if practicable’.

A table of life-saving signals must also be on board – another SOLAS requirement. It may be downloaded or can be found in Reeds and the Cruising Almanac.

Turning away from the horrible prospect of having to abandon ship – which is highly unlikely but must be catered for – you need to make sure you have ample fuel to motor for 12 hours or more if the wind fails and enough provisions to keep everyone fed and happy.

There is no need to prepare and cook to cordon bleu standards. We find that a more or less constant supply of snacks backed up with some more substantial sandwiches at about the halfway point fits the bill nicely. If it is a bit chilly, a mug of something hot – tea, coffee or soup – is a real morale booster.

Remember that France is an hour ahead of the UK, so don’t bargain on shops or restaurants being open for supper when you arrive.

If you steered due south without any course corrections, you may well end up several miles down tide of your intended destination

Paperwork for a Channel crossing

The documents you need for leaving the UK and entering France post-Brexit can be found at www.gov.uk and also the RYA website. Electronic methods of submitting these documents are still being refined. At the time of writing, you still need to complete a C1331 and post it, or an e-C1331 form, which is an Excel file you download, fill in and email.

english sailing yachts

Plot your positions every hour to keep track of your tidal set. Photo: Andy Du Port

Other documents that you must carry onboard are: n Passports for every crew member:

  • Certificate of registration (usually SSR)
  • Proof of VAT status if applicable
  • Ship Radio Licence and Authority to Operate (Short Range Certificate)
  • Proof of insurance (original certificate, not a copy)
  • Certificate of competence (ICC)
  • RCD Declaration of Conformity (for vessels built after June 1998). Given the ongoing worries of having red diesel on board (only in the main tank, never in cans), a record of all fuel receipts and engine hours is strongly recommended.

Crew for sailing the English Channel

For your first crossing, choose your crew carefully. If sailing two-handed, your mate should be Competent Crew standard or, preferably, like you, at least Day Skipper qualified.

Consider a situation where you become incapacitated; would your crew be able to call for help and/or get you and the boat to a safe haven?

Carry out a comprehensive briefing before sailing to ensure that everyone knows the plan, how long you estimate it will take, the expected weather and your thoughts on alternative destinations if the weather deteriorates. They also need to be familiar with emergency radio procedures and the operation/deployment of safety equipment.

If you have children on board, involve them as much as possible.

English Channel crossing navigation

As Sir John Harvey-Jones said: ‘Planning is an unnatural process; it is much more fun to do something. The best thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression.’

Another truism is that time spent planning is never wasted. Having sailed across the English Channel more times than I can remember during the last 50 years or so, the only times when things have got messy were when the skipper/navigator’s homework ‘could be better’.

At best, it would be a late arrival due to ending up downstream of the destination; at worst, the chosen destination becomes unachievable. If you get it badly wrong when making for Alderney, for example, it is quite possible for a spring ebb stream to whisk you to Guernsey whether you like it or not.

You will have your favourite books and publications. The examples below are some of mine, but I would not wish to recommend any particular publisher over another.

Space prevents elaboration, but you should consult:

Calculate a course to steer properly. If you follow the rhumbline on your plotter, the crossing will be much slower. Photo: Andy Du Port

Admiralty Small Craft Charts and Imray Chart Packs give ample coverage on paper while Navionics and C-Map are good options for electronic charts.

Personally, I would never sail without paper charts as a back-up even if navigating primarily by electronic means.

Any trusted tide tables. Admiralty Tide Tables and Tidal Stream Atlases are excellent, and the same data is available on, for example, the Imray Tides Planner app.

Both Reeds and the Cruising Almanac (affiliate link) have tide tables and small scale tidal atlases.

For this passage, the Reeds Channel Almanac or the Cruising Almanac are invaluable for the plethora of information they contain. I wouldn’t be without one of them.

Otherwise known as Cruising Companions or Sailing Directions, they give opinions and information about facilities ashore as well as useful navigational guidance. Imray’s Shell Channel Pilot (affiliate link) edited by Tom Cunliffe is hard to beat.

Allowing for the tides

Apart from the weather, the next item on your list of concerns will probably be navigating out of sight of land. Yes, we all think we know exactly where we are thanks to GPS, but is that good enough?

It is all very well knowing your current position; you also need to be able to predict your position at least an hour ahead, work out the course to steer, and decide what other actions to take if you are set off track – which you will be. Indeed, if you try to stick rigidly to the line on the chart while sailing the English Channel, you will sail considerably further and take much longer to reach your destination.

Let the tides take the strain. On a passage like this, it would be easy to think that you just need to clear the Needles Channel, steer south, wait 12 hours and arrive in Cherbourg. That might work if the tidal streams flowed at the same rates throughout the Channel, and if you took exactly 12 hours to get to the other side – six hours west; six hours east.

english sailing yachts

Rotate helms regularly to keep everyone involved and to hold a good course. Photo: Andy Du Port

In reality, the streams near the French coast and off headlands run very much faster than in mid-Channel. The solution is to make an informed guess about your passage speed and, therefore, your expected time underway. Then, having decided when to leave, plot your projected positions and look up the tidal stream rates at hourly intervals.

Some will be setting east, some west. Take the smaller from the larger and the result will be your net set in that direction. You must then work out the course to steer to counter that set.

If you are very lucky, you will steer a constant course for the entire passage and wind up at your destination having been set off track, to east and west, in the meantime.

As there are no navigational dangers in that part of the Channel, being off track is no problem.

In practice, you would be wise to aim to arrive a mile or so upstream of your destination in order to reduce the risk of having to bash into the stream for the last few miles.

At Cherbourg the distance between Passe de L’Ouest and Passe de L’Est is about 2.5 miles, so aiming for the middle of the breakwater will put you upstream of one of the entrances. As you get close to the French coast, it becomes more important than ever to monitor how you are being set. Make adjustments accordingly, allowing for any predicted changes in tidal stream as you get close to land.

english sailing yachts

Yarmouth makes a good departure port, minimising the distance of the crossing the next day.

Having drawn the track on the chart (paper and/or electronic) and measured the distance, you will need to decide the best time to leave before calculating the course to steer for the main part of the passage (as described above).

The shortest distance from the Solent to Cherbourg is via the Needles Channel, so the previous night in Yarmouth or Lymington is a good option. If leaving from the east, you might consider anchoring for the night in Priory Bay off Bembridge which will save about 5 miles if you are based in Portsmouth or Gosport.

Either way, it is a good idea to get an initial tidal lift for the first few miles.

Leaving via the Needles, this is essential in order to get through the Hurst Narrows with a favourable stream. At springs, an early departure on the last of the ebb is perfect for a late afternoon arrival in Cherbourg.

english sailing yachts

Execution of the plan

Before leaving, remember to tell someone ashore of your plans and estimated time of arrival (ETA). Just as important, brief them on who to contact (usually the Coastguard) if you are overdue. It is also a good idea to call the Coastguard just before departure with a ‘traffic report’.

You should call Solent Coastguard on Channel 67, which saves clutter on Channel 16. They will need to know: vessels’ name, callsign and MMSI; when and where you are departing from; where and when you expect to arrive; and the number of people on board.

They may well ask you if your vessel details are saved in their system, via the RYA SafeTrx app, which replaced form CG66. However, the app isn’t recommended for live tracking when crossing the Channel as it is not GMDSS approved.

The Coastguard will record all your details but they will not take any action if they don’t hear from you again! That is up to your shore contact. If you remember to do so, and are able to raise Solent GC from Cherbourg, a call confirming your safe arrival will be much appreciated.

Once clear of the Needles, the best advice is to fix your position regularly, using GPS and any other source available. Even a sounding may give a rough north/south position, and the shipping lanes also give an indication of progress across the Channel.

Visual fixes are a good back-up when in sight of land. A fix every hour on the hour is about right. Plot it on the chart and work up an EP for at least the next hour.

Record the position in the log, along with course steered and distance run, so you always have the information available to be able work out your position if the electronics fail. At the same time, make a note of the actual wind speed and direction, and the pressure from the barometer. The latter can give you an early heads up of an un-forecast deterioration of the weather.

english sailing yachts

Shipping normally sticks to specific lanes

Collision avoidance sailing across the English Channel

The Channel is full of ships! Luckily, they tend to follow the recommended lanes which are shown on the charts: roughly 255° for the northerly west-bound traffic and 075° for the southerly east-bound ships, but beware of ferries, fishing boats and other traffic which don’t follow the lanes.

Nothing beats a good lookout and lots of visual bearings. AIS is invaluable but not all vessels are fitted with it, some might not have it on, and others might be showing false information.

AIS increases the temptation to call ships on VHF. Try to resist this, and thereby prevent a radio-assisted collision.

Strict adherence to the Colregs will keep you safe, and don’t be afraid to comply with Rule 17(a)(ii) which basically allows you to take appropriate action to avoid a close quarters situation even though, when sailing, you are invariably the stand-on vessel when crossing the shipping lanes (not to be confused with Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) when you are not!).

If you can keep well clear of multi-tonne container ships hammering down Channel, so much the better. In poor visibility, you are required to use radar if it is available.

Take every opportunity to practise monitoring and plotting other ships in clear visibility.

If bad weather threatens or a deadline looms, get the ferry home rather than risk an unwise crossing

Sailing to France : Arrival

As you enter French territorial waters – 12 miles offshore, but look at the chart to confirm – you should hoist the Tricolour at the starboard spreaders. If you are flying a burgee to starboard, shift it to the port spreader as a courtesy flag should not be flown with any other flag in the same hoist.

You must also fly a Q flag until cleared by the French immigration authorities. Opinion is divided, but I suggest the Q flag is flown on the port spreader over the burgee. If for some reason you have lowered the ensign during the passage, remember that the law requires you to wear it when entering a foreign port.

Cherbourg is an ideal place to enter on your first time sailing across the English Channel. The western entrance is wider and has fewer outlying dangers than the eastern entrance, but neither is navigationally challenging.

Once through the entrance there is plenty of room to lower sails, prepare lines and fenders, and generally get the boat squared away. On entering the marina, be prepared to berth either side to, probably on a finger berth which is significantly shorter than the boat!

english sailing yachts

Arriving in Alderney for the first time – which can be a sensible alternative to Cherbourg if you are then bound further south – you also need to fly a Q flag before being cleared by Customs/immigration.

The only snag with Alderney is that the harbour is wide open to the NE, and any wind from that direction can make life very uncomfortable. Otherwise, apart from the tidal streams, the entrance is perfectly straightforward, and the leading marks/lights are easy to spot.

Returning home

Although you have only just arrived, now is the time to start thinking of the return passage if you are not going anywhere else in France or the Channel Islands.

Whatever you do, don’t get yourself into the position where you are running out of time – for work or other pressing engagements. It is a common mistake to sail into marginal weather conditions just to meet a deadline at home.

The safety of you, your crew and boat is paramount, and there are plenty of ferries back to the UK.

A distillation of technology and innovation, she is the result of a collaboration between the best experts of Groupe Beneteau’s teams and the designers Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP), the architects behind the winners of the last two Vendée Globe races.

40 Best Sailboats

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: April 18, 2019

the 40 best sailboats

Sailors are certainly passionate about their boats, and if you doubt that bold statement, try posting an article dubbed “ 40 Best Sailboats ” and see what happens.

Barely had the list gone live, when one reader responded, “Where do I begin? So many glaring omissions!” Like scores of others, he listed a number of sailboats and brands that we were too stupid to think of, but unlike some, he did sign off on a somewhat upbeat note: “If it weren’t for the presence of the Bermuda 40 in Cruising World’s list, I wouldn’t even have bothered to vote.”

By vote, he means that he, like hundreds of other readers, took the time to click through to an accompanying page where we asked you to help us reshuffle our alphabetical listing of noteworthy production sailboats so that we could rank them instead by popularity. So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.

The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?

In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. Their favorites poured in and soon an inkling of a list began to take shape. To corral things a bit and avoid going all the way back to Joshua Slocum and his venerable Spray —Hell, to Noah and his infamous Ark —we decided to focus our concentration on production monohull sailboats, which literally opened up the sport to anyone who wanted to get out on the water. And since CW is on the verge or turning 40, we decided that would be a nice round number at which to draw the line and usher in our coming ruby anniversary.

If you enjoy scrolling through this list, which includes all types of sailboats, then perhaps you would also be interested in browsing our list of the Best Cruising Sailboats . Check it out and, of course, feel free to add your favorite boat, too. Here at Cruising World , we like nothing better than talking about boats, and it turns out, so do you.

New Flagship for Bering Yachts: The B165

  • By Yachting Staff
  • March 19, 2024

Bering 165

Bering Yachts , known for its steel expedition-style trawler yachts, introduced a new flagship B165 explorer yacht at the Dubai International Boat Show.

“She keeps all the ruggedness, stability, range and all-weather capability while representing a Mediterranean and Caribbean approach to life: easygoing, relaxed and full of comfort,” the company stated in a press release. “You are still traveling in your home, but with so much more open space and fresh air that the onboard life becomes a full-circle indoor and outdoor experience.”

The shipyard describes the B165 as “Bering to the bone, but with a luxury twist.” On the main deck’s elongated after section, there’s a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. Folding bulwarks can expand this relaxation even more, and the pool can be covered for use as stowage for water toys and other equipment. There’s also space here for two tenders.

Inside on the main deck are dining and lounging areas, along with two VIP staterooms. An additional room at the bow can be outfitted as a guest stateroom, or as an onboard cinema.

Bering 165

The owners’ deck has more than 750 square feet of space, including a sleeping area, a head, and a lounge with a bar, table and seating. An open space aft on the owners’ deck has a table for alfresco dining, while at the bow, there’s a hot tub and a lounge. Crew have access to a private service room for preparing and serving meals, with a dumbwaiter that connects to a similar service area on the main deck, and to the galley on the lower deck.

Also on the lower deck are three guest staterooms, four cabins to accommodate eight crew, and a crew mess. An additional cabin on this deck can be used for supernumeraries such as nannies, guides and masseurs.

Up on the bridge deck, there’s a lounge with a bar, an outdoor cinema, a day head and a firepit. The captain’s quarters are here as well.

Above that deck is a crow’s nest with a hardtop where guests can have an unobstructed 360-degree view of the yacht’s surroundings.

Bering 165

Eco-friendly design is also inherent in the Bering 165, according to company founder Alexei Mikhailov: “We are building responsibly. Designing a large engine room, we definitely had alternative energy solutions in mind. There is plenty of space to accommodate hybrid applications and install a big battery bank.”

Power for the 499-gross-ton vessel will be twin 1,300-horsepower Caterpillar C32 engines, with a reported cruise speed of 12 knots and a maximum speed of 15 knots. Fuel capacity is nearly 18,500 gallons, which the team at Bering says gives the B165 a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles. ABT-Trac systems are installed for guest comfort.

Does the Bering Yachts B165 have a steel hull? Yes, with an aluminum superstructure.

10 Best Small Sailboats (Under 20 Feet)

Best Small Sailboats Under 20 Feet | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

Compact, easy to trailer, simple to rig, easy to maintain and manage, and affordable, the best small boats all have one thing in common: they offer loads of fun while out there on the water.

So whether you're on a budget or just looking for something that can offer ultimate daytime rides without compromising on safety, aesthetic sensibilities, alternate propulsion, and speed, the best small sailboats under 20 feet should be the only way to go.

Let's be brutally honest here; not everyone needs a 30-foot sailboat to go sailing. They come with lots of features such as electronics, entertainment, refrigeration, bunks, a galley, and even a head. But do you really need all these features to go sailing? We don't think so.

All you need to go sailing is a hull, a mast, rudder, and, of course, a sail. And whether you refer to them as daysailers, trailerable sailboats , a weekender sailboat, or pocket cruisers, there's no better way to enjoy the thrills of coastal sailing than on small sailboats.

There are a wide range of small boats measuring less than 20 feet available in the market. These are hot products in the market given that they offer immense thrills out on the sea without the commitment required to cruise on a 30-footer. A small sailboat will not only give you the feel of every breeze but will also give you the chance to instantly sense every change in trim.

In this article, we'll highlight 10 best small sailboats under 20 feet . Most models in this list are time-tested, easy to rig, simple to sail, extremely fun, and perfect either for solo sailing or for sailing with friends and family. So if you've been looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats , you've come to the right place.

So without further ado, let's roll on.

Table of contents

{{boat-info="/boats/hunter-15"}}

The Marlow-Hunter 15 is not only easy to own since it's one of the most affordable small sailboats but also lots of fun to sail. This is a safe and versatile sailboat for everyone. Whether you're sailing with your family or as a greenhorn, you'll love the Hunter 15 thanks to its raised boom, high freeboard, and sturdy FRP construction.

With high sides, a comfortable wide beam, a contoured self-bailing cockpit, and fiberglass construction, the Hunter 15 is certainly designed with the novice sailor in mind. This is why you can do a lot with this boat without falling out, breaking it, or capsizing. Its contoured self-baiting cockpit will enable you to find a fast exit while its wide beam will keep it steady and stable no matter what jibes or weight shifts happen along the way.

This is a small sailboat that can hold up to four people. It's designed to give you a confident feeling and peace of mind even when sailing with kids. It's easy to trailer, easy to rig, and easy to launch. With a price tag of about $10k, the Hunter 15 is a fun, affordable, and versatile boat that is perfect for both seasoned sailors and novices. It's a low-maintenance sailboat that can be great for teaching kids a thing or two about sailing.

Catalina 16.5

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-16-5"}}

Catalina Yachts are synonymous with bigger boats but they have some great and smaller boats too such as Catalina 16.5. This is one of the best small sailboats that are ideal for family outings given that it has a big and roomy cockpit, as well as a large storage locker. Designed with a hand-laminated fiberglass sloop, the Catalina 16.5 is versatile and is available in two designs: the centerboard model and the keel model.

The centerboard model is designed with a powerful sailplane that remains balanced as a result of the fiberglass centerboard, the stable hull form, and the rudder. It also comes with a tiller extension, adjustable hiking straps, and adjustable overhaul. It's important to note that these are standard equipment in the two models.

As far as the keel model is concerned, this is designed with a high aspect keel as the cast lead and is attached with stainless steel keel bolts, which makes this model perfect for mooring or docking whenever it's not in use. In essence, the centerboard model is perfect if you'll store it in a trailer while the keel model can remain at the dock.

All in all, the Catalina 16.5 is one of the best small sailboats that you can get your hands on for as low as $10,000. This is certainly a great example of exactly what a daysailer should be.

{{boat-info="/boats/hobie-16"}}

There's no list of small, trailerable, and fun sailboats that can be complete without the inclusion of the classic Hobie 16. This is a durable design that has been around and diligently graced various waters across the globe since its debut way back in 1969 in Southern California. In addition to being durable, the Hobie 16 is trailerable, great for speed, weighs only 320 pounds, great for four people, and more importantly, offers absolute fun.

With a remarkable figure of over 100,000 launched since its debut, it's easy to see that the Hobie 16 is highly popular. Part of this popularity comes from its asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam sandwiched hulls that include kick-up rudders. This is a great feature that allows it to sail up to the beach.

For about $12,000, the Hobie 16 will provide you with endless fun throughout the summer. It's equipped with a spinnaker, trailer, and douse kit. This is a high-speed sailboat that has a large trampoline to offer lots of space not just for your feet but also to hand off the double trapezes.

Montgomery 17

{{boat-info="/boats/montgomery-17"}}

Popularly known as the M-17, The Montgomery 17 was designed by Lyle C. Hess in conjunction with Jerry Montgomery in Ontario, California for Montgomery Boats. Designed either with keel or centerboard models, the M-17 is more stable than most boats of her size. This boat is small enough to be trailered but also capable of doing moderate offshore passages.

This small sailboat is designed with a masthead and toe rail that can fit most foresails. It also has enough space for two thanks to its cuddly cabin, which offers a sitting headroom, a portable toilet, a pair of bunks, a DC power, and optional shore, and a proper amount of storage. That's not all; you can easily raise the deck-stepped mast using a four-part tackle.

In terms of performance, the M-17 is one of the giant-killers out there. This is a small sailboat that will excel in the extremes and make its way past larger boats such as the Catalina 22. It glides along beautifully and is a dog in light air, though it won't sail against a 25-knot wind, which can be frustrating. Other than that, the Montgomery 17 is a great small sailboat that can be yours for about $14,000.

Norseboat 17.5

{{boat-info="/boats/norseboat-17-5"}}

As a versatile daysailer, Norseboat 17.5 follows a simple concept of seaworthiness and high-performance. This small sailboat perfectly combines both contemporary construction and traditional aesthetics. Imagine a sailboat that calls itself the "Swiss Army Knife of Boats!" Well, this is a boat that can sail and row equally well.

Whether you're stepping down from a larger cruiser or stepping up from a sea kayak, the unique Norseboat 17.5 is balanced, attractive, and salty. It has curvaceous wishbone gaff, it is saucy, and has a stubby bow-sprit that makes it attractive to the eyes. In addition to her beauty, the Norseboat 17.5 offers an energy-pinching challenge, is self-sufficient, and offers more than what you're used to.

This is a small, lightweight, low-maintenance sailboat that offers a ticket to both sailing and rowing adventures all at the same time. At about 400 pounds, it's very portable and highly convenient. Its mainsails may look small but you'll be surprised at how the boat is responsive to it. With a $12,500 price tag, this is a good small sailboat that offers you the versatility to either row or sail.

{{boat-info="/boats/sage-marine-sage-17"}}

If you've been looking for a pocket cruiser that inspires confidence, especially in shoal water, look no further than the Sage 17. Designed by Jerry Montgomery in 2009, the Sage 17 is stable and should heel to 10 degrees while stiffening up. And because you want to feel secure while sailing, stability is an integral feature of the Sage 17.

This is a sailboat that will remain solid and stable no matter which part of the boat you stand on. Its cabin roof and the balsa-cored carbon-fiber deck are so strong that the mast doesn't require any form of compression post. The self-draining cockpit is long enough and capable of sleeping at 6 feet 6 inches.

The Sage 17 may be expensive at $25k but is a true sea warrior that's worth look at. This is a boat that will not only serve you right but will also turn heads at the marina.

{{boat-info="/boats/laserperformance-laser-sb3"}}

Having been chosen as the overall boat of the year for 2008 by the Sailing World Magazine, the Laser SB3 is one of the coolest boats you'll ever encounter. When sailing upwind, this boat will lock into the groove while its absolute simplicity is legendary. In terms of downwind sailing, having this boat will be a dream come true while it remains incredibly stable even at extraordinary speed.

Since its debut in 2004, the Laser SB3 has surged in terms of popularity thanks to the fact that it's designed to put all the controls at your fingertips. In addition to a lightweight mast, its T- bulb keel can be hauled and launched painlessly. For about $18,000, the Laser SB3 ushers you into the world of sports sailing and what it feels to own and use a sports boat.

{{boat-info="/boats/fareast-18"}}

As a manufacturer, Fareast is a Chinese boat manufacturer that has been around for less than two decades. But even with that, the Fareast 18 remains a very capable cruiser-racer that will take your sailing to the next level. In addition to its good looks, this boat comes with a retractable keel with ballast bulb, a powerful rig, and an enclosed cabin.

Its narrow design with a closed stern may be rare in sailboats of this size, but that's not a problem for the Fareast 18. This design not only emphasizes speed but also makes it a lot easier to maintain this boat. Perfect for about 6 people, this boat punches above its weight. It's, however, designed to be rigged and launched by one person.

This is a relatively affordable boat. It's agile, safe, well-thought-out, well built, and very sporty.

{{boat-info="/boats/chuck-paine-paine-14"}}

If you're in the market looking for a small sailboat that offers contemporary performance with classic beauty, the Paine 14 should be your ideal option. Named after its famous designer, Chuck Paine, this boat is intentionally designed after the classic Herreshoff 12.5 both in terms of dimensions and features.

This is a lightweight design that brings forth modern fin keel and spade rudder, which makes it agile, stable, and faster. The Paine 14 is built using cold-molded wood or west epoxy. It has varnished gunnels and transoms to give it an old-time charm. To make it somehow modern, this boat is designed with a carbon mast and a modern way to attach sails so that it's ready to sail in minutes.

You can rest easy knowing that the Paine 14 will not only serve you well but will turn heads while out there.

{{boat-info="/boats/wd-schock-lido-14"}}

Many sailors will attest that their first sailing outing was in a Lido 14. This is a classic sailboat that has been around for over four decades and still proves to be a perfect match to modern small boats, especially for those still learning the ropes of sailing.

With seating for six people, the Lido 14 can be perfect for solo sailing , single-handed sailing, or if you're planning for shorthanded sailing. While new Lido 14 boats are no longer available, go for a functional used Lido 14 and you'll never regret this decision. It will serve you well and your kids will probably fall in love with sailing if Lido 14 becomes their main vessel during weekends or long summer holidays.

Bottom Line

There you have it; these are some of the best small sailboats you can go for. While there are endless small sailboats in the market, the above-described sailboat will serve you right and make you enjoy the wind.

Choose the perfect sailboat, invest in it, and go out there and have some good fun!

43m Pershing yacht chorsuline

43m Pershing fast motor yacht Chorusline for sale

The 43.3-metre fast motor yacht Chorusline is newly listed for sale with Charles Carveles of Edmiston .

Delivered from the renowned Italian builder of fast yachts, Pershing , in 2019, this Pershing 140 is constructed of aluminium and was fully repainted in 2023. Her design is by Fulvio De Simoni with interior by Italprojects and naval architecture by Ferretti Engineering Department.

Chorusline is described by the broker as "like new" as she has only ever been used as a dayboat and her beds never slept in.

Accommodation for a party of 10 guests is arranged over four cabins, comprising a master suite, a double cabin and two twins with additional Pullman berths. There are quarters for a crew of seven in four cabins.

Presently, the main-deck owner's suite is used as an entertainment space with a dining room, bar and cinema room, connected to the saloon. This could easily be converted back to a cabin, all the plumbing and infrastructure being in place. Textured wooden panelling adorns the interior bulkheads, contrasting with dark wooden flooring, while abstract chrome sculptures and green items of furniture give the spaces a sparkle.

Her expansive sundeck sports a Jacuzzi and sunpads forward, an al fresco dining area, bar and ample space to lounge about, all protected by an awning. At sea-level, the fold-down hull openings and large swim platform make for a spacious open-plan, teak-decked beach club from where water toys may be embarked, the whole area easily reached via twin transom staircases from the aft deck.

Four 2,600hp engines, with less than 700 hours on them, give the 380GT low-draft, yacht for sale a top speed of 38 knots and the ability to accelerate from rest to 35 knots in under a minute.

Cruising speed is 28 knots and she has a range of 1,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. Her inventory includes a four-metre tender, two paddle boards and brand new stand-up jet ski

Lying in Hong Kong, Chorusline is asking $21,500,000.

A migrant has been stabbed and injured on a small boat in the English Channel today, GB News can exclusively reveal.

UK authorities, including a Border force vessel and two lifeboats attended the incident just before lunchtime.

The dinghy was one of eight small boats that reached UK waters on the busiest day of Channel crossings so far this year.

The casualty was transferred to the Walmer lifeboat and taken to Dover harbour.

GB News Kent producer filmed as an ambulance arrived at the harbour to meet the lifeboat. A short time later, that ambulance left for hospital under blue lights, but there is no word yet on how seriously injured the migrant is.

The remaining group of more than 60 migrants from the boat at the centre of the incident were taken onboard the Dover lifeboat. At Dover harbour, police officers were seen at the quayside checking migrants as they came off the lifeboat.

The migrants were then taken to the nearby Border Force migrant processing facility for further checks.

A Home Office source said that Kent police have taken the lead on the ongoing investigation into the incident.

A record 450 people crossed the English Channel in eight small boats

Kent Police said in a statement: "At 12.52pm on Wednesday 20 March, Kent Police received a report of a man with injuries consistent with stab wounds, following the arrival of a small boat at Dover Western Docks.

"The man has been taken to hospital with injuries which are not described as life-threatening and officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances, including where, when and how the injuries were sustained."

The incident happened on the day a record 450 people crossed the English Channel in eight small boats, taking advantages of an improvement in weather conditions.

Wednesday's arrivals beat the previous one-day record this year, when 401 small boat migrants arrived at the beginning of March.

An island with palm trees at its center ringed by beach with beach umbrellas is seen across an expanse of clear blue water.

You Haven’t Seen Blue Until You’ve Seen San Andres

The island, close to Nicaragua but part of Colombia, boasts waters in seven shades of the color. Counting them — from a boat, from a cay, from the shade of a coconut tree — is a meditative experience.

The attractions on San Andres include the tiny islands known as cays. Johnny Cay, which sits across the water from the more populated northern part of San Andres, looks like the dictionary entry for “deserted island.” Credit... Toh Gouttenoire for The New York Times

On San Andres, a small Colombian island in an archipelago off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, counting the blues in the famous “Sea of Seven Colors” is on every visitor’s to-do list. It’s a midday activity done en route as you cruise among the cays, or keys, dotting San Andres’s eastern side: low-lying (mostly) uninhabited specks that aren’t much more than coral topped with palm trees and circled by sandbars.

From my bobbing perch, I counted six: a deep sapphire, a dusky azure, stripes of teal, turquoise and cerulean and, in the distance, a swath of brilliant cyan against the edge of a tiny, palm-fringed island.

“Do you see seven?” the boat’s captain asked.

When I told him my tally, he laughed. “Six?” he said. “That means you can still relax a little more.”

San Andres is not on the radar of many U.S. travelers, but in Latin America, and especially among Colombians, it is a coveted honeymoon destination or a long-weekend retreat — a spot in the middle of the ocean to disconnect from whatever weighed you down on the mainland.

A man stands to the left side of the photograph wearing a blue short sleeve button down shirt. He is bald and has a goatee. In the distance you can see a town and blue water beyond it.

Connecting with history

The archipelago of San Andres and Providencia is more than 400 miles north of the mainland of Colombia, and closer to 100 miles east of Nicaragua, but thanks to a historical wrinkle that is still being ironed out, it is part of Colombia.

Kent Francis James, 73, was the archipelago’s governor during the 1990s and advised the current local and national government on boundary issues with Nicaragua. But his passion, he said when I met him on San Andres, is helping tourists connect more deeply with the island’s history.

“We want you to come here not just to get your skin burned, but to bring home a better understanding of Caribbean history,” he said, as we sat on his home’s balcony and enjoyed the view of the water in the distance, framed by bougainvillea and palm trees.

Mr. James scanned the horizon and pointed out the shipwrecks that litter the island’s waters. “We were geographically on the route of the Spanish going up the coast with gold, so this is the place the pirates used to be on watch,” he explained, describing how voyagers often underestimated the shallow waters surrounding the islands’ many cays and ran aground — to the delight of pirates like the Welsh-born Sir Henry Morgan, who is believed to have used San Andres as a base of operations.

We were technically in Colombia, but Mr. James spoke in clipped English — his accent itself a nod to the island’s history.

Although it is believed that the Dutch and Christopher Columbus landed on the archipelago, it was the British who settled San Andres around 1630. English was the island’s first language, and still today it’s spoken by the native islanders.

Unlike most places in Latin America, San Andres has no record of Indigenous peoples on the island. It was seemingly uninhabited when the Europeans arrived. And that’s why when locals refer to “native” islanders, they are referring to the descendants of the original British settlers or, more frequently, the descendants of the once-enslaved Africans those settlers brought over.

This Afro-Caribbean ethnic group is called Raizal, a takeoff of the Spanish word for “roots.”

Posadas Nativas

Cleotilde Henry, 75, is one of the island’s Raizal leaders. Her family traces back to the African slave trade, she explained, as she set out crunchy slices of fried breadfruit and balls of sweet coconut on her dining room table. She didn’t make the treats just for me — she sets them out every day for the tourists who rent rooms in the upstairs of her home through the island’s posadas nativas , or native inns program.

“I was born in this house,” she said, pointing around the small living room to yellowed family portraits in wooden frames and crocheted table coverings. “So when I thought about what I could do to make money from tourism, the only thing I had was this house.”

Today Ms. Henry, who is also the president of the archipelago’s Posadas Nativas Association , rents 12 rooms, which can be found under the name “ Cli’s Place ” on travel-booking websites like Booking.com.

Across the archipelago, around 200 homes have been designated “posadas nativas,” offering an opportunity for tourists to stay with a local family — usually under the watchful eye of the matriarch — in their home, and to eat local, Raizal foods.

It’s the local solution to a universal challenge: how to retain the unique identity of a place when tourism starts booming. Less than 20 years ago, Raizal people accounted for 57 percent of the population of San Andres, but each year that number gets smaller, as Colombians from the mainland are lured to the blue waters of island life.

A bikini and a golf cart

Although the beaches of San Andres are not among the most beautiful in the world, the water a short distance offshore is, thanks to the sunken reefs, and so many visitors skip exploring the interior of the island in favor of getting wet.

Each cay differs from the next. Johnny Cay, which sits across the water from the more populated northern part of San Andres, looks like the dictionary entry for “deserted island”: a clump of palm trees ringed by white sand. Rocky Cay is not much more than its namesake rock, with a lean-to beach bar and a rusty shipwreck sticking out of the water beside it. You reach Haynes Cay by wading through waist-deep water, holding a wobbly rope connecting the cay to a no-frills restaurant built on a sandbar. A typical day vacationing in San Andres includes bopping among the cays, pausing to doze against their palm trees or swim in the water around them, and, along the way, counting blues.

Like the pirates of the past, today’s snorkelers and scuba divers are delighted by the sunken ships dotting the waters, as they get to explore the underwater ecosystems created by those wrecks. In 2000, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization established the massive Seaflower Biosphere Reserve , a vast protected marine area surrounding the islands.

“It’s like a mountain range under the water here, and that’s why we have deep spots but also these sandbars and cays,” explained Jorge Sanchez, 68, a former dive instructor on the island who invited me to his home one afternoon to view topological maps of the area’s ocean floor. Waving his hand across one map, he added, “The ocean species don’t know where the border is between Colombia and Nicaragua, so this is a great place to see all kinds of animals from different places.”

Even if you don’t enjoy the waves, San Andres is a gorgeous setting to enjoy the seven shades of blue from afar. And the not-too-steep hills and smooth-enough roads mean that the breeziest, most fun way to do that is by renting a mule (pronounced moo-LAY), a little golf cart, the typical way visitors get around the island.

I’d never driven a golf cart any significant distance, so when Ms. Henry suggested that I put on my bathing suit and take one around the island, I balked. But about an hour later, I was smiling like a fool, the ocean wind blowing back my hair as I chugged down the road ringing the coast at about 25 m.p.h., with motorcycles zipping around me. I cruised past the cays, hopping in the water when it called to me, making my way down to the island’s less populated southern end. I stopped for lunch at the Raizal restaurant Miss Janice Place for fried fish and coconut rice.

On the way back, I planned to swing by Mr. James’s house, to tell him about my day. Without a good cell signal on the island, the only way I could do this was by popping in, so I headed toward his place, until the chugs of my mule became less frequent, and I finally realized the engine had shut off. My trusty mule was sliding backward down the hill. I slammed on the brake, slowing the slide, but couldn’t get the engine to turn over again. Fortunately, some utility workers witnessed the scene, suppressed their laughter and came to my rescue. They improvised a solution and hauled the golf cart to the top of the hill using long wires. I told them I was visiting Mr. James, and one of the workers turned and shouted over a wall of bushes — “Mister Kent! We found an American!”

Grinning, Mr. James emerged from his property to greet me, and as I waved a thank you to my utility-worker heroes, he explained he wasn’t surprised to see me.

“Because a tourist can spend their days on the beach, and fill their stomach with our food and rum, and then go home and never return,” he said. “But once you start to talk to locals about our history, you will always want to come back.”

Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport has direct connections to Panama City, Panama, and multiple cities in Colombia, and from San Andres it’s possible to get a flight to the neighboring island of Providencia.

Once on the island, the best way to get around is either by taxi, easily found in downtown San Andres or arranged in advance, or by mule , which can be rented for around 200,000 Colombian pesos, or about $51, per day.

Staying at a posada nativa, or locally owned inn, is the maximum immersion experience on the island, and often will be the most affordable lodging option; expect to pay about 235,000 Colombian pesos a night with breakfast. Cli’s Place Posada Nativa , Posada Nativa Licy and Miss Trinie’s Posada Nativa are some of the most popular.

For a more upscale experience, Decameron operates many hotels on the island, including the Decameron Isleno at Spratt Bight beach, a centrally located, all-inclusive option for about one million Colombian pesos per night. Hotel Casablanca offers rooms with a view of Johnny Cay for about 1.1 million Colombian pesos per night. Short-term rental options are also available through Airbnb. Many are within condominium developments and have amenities like pools, doormen and gyms.

Niko’s Seafood is a midrange restaurant near the center of San Andres serving fresh-caught fish cooked for around 50,000 Colombian pesos.

La Regatta is perhaps the fanciest restaurant in San Andres, specializing in seafood like ceviche for 75,000 Colombian pesos a or grilled lobster with coconut rice (215,000 Colombian pesos) served on a patio over the water near central San Andres. Reservations required, request the patio.

Miss Janice Place on the southern end of San Andres in San Luis offers typical Raizal food for 40,000 Colombian pesos for mains accompanied by coconut rice and jars of natural fruit juice.

Namasté Beach Club San Andres is near Rocky Cay with chic lounge chairs and a menu ranging from beach snacks like empanadas (around 30,000 Colombian pesos) to proper dinner like fried local fish (50,000 Colombian pesos).
