National One-Design
National One-Design is a 16 ′ 11 ″ / 5.2 m monohull sailboat designed by William F. Crosby and built by Ray Greene & Co. starting in 1936.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Plans first appeared in the January 1937 issue of ‘The Rudder’ magazine. The designer was editor at the Time. Specifications are controlled by National One Design Racing Association, which owns the design. March madness predictions: andy katz makes his 2024 di men's basketball bracket picks.
Right after the 2024 Division I men's basketball bracket was unveiled on Sunday, NCAA.com's March Madness guru Andy Katz live-streamed his March Madness picks for Bleacher Report.
He gets into each of his picks in the video , but for now, we'll dive into his most notable predictions from each round and each region, as well as his Elite Eight and Final Four selections.
BRACKET: Check out the 2024 bracket
East region
- Reasoning: "Tucker DeVries is an outstanding player, a big time scorer coached by his father Darian Reese, and they won the [Missouri] Valley tournament by beating Indiana State. I like Drake here."
- Reasoning: "I just love the way the Illini are playing right now."
- Reasoning: "These games will be in Boston, so it's a de-facto home game for the Huskies. It will be an absolute war between these two teams, it's going to be incredibly intense, but In a late-possession game I like UConn to get to the Final Four for a chance at back-to-back championships."
West region
- Reasoning: "They [Nevada] have a team that's already won a tournament (Diamondhead Classic). They've got a lot of momentum and I love the way they're playing."
- Reasoning: "There's great guard play for both schools here, but I just think the momentum is going to continue for the Lobos. Richard Pitino has done an outstanding job resetting the season after the disappointing home loss to Air Force.”
- Reasoning: "We get Caleb Love vs. RJ Davis, ACC player of the year vs. Pac-12 player of the Year, teammates a year ago — what a great storyline in Los Angeles. I think Arizona wins it."
South region
- Reasoning: "Florida's sort of flew under the radar and had a really solid season — they played in the SEC title game — but here's where I pick an upset. I think Colorado beats Boise and Colorado beats Florida."
- Reasoning: "I think the Badgers have the ability to match Duke on the perimeter and be physical. Steven Crowl is playing very well right now and I think he can match up with [Kyle] Filipowski."
- Reasoning: "Reed Sheppard gets there (to the Final Four) like his dad Jeff Sheppard did, as a three seed. Kentucky advances."
PLAY TO WIN: Play the 2024 Bracket Challenge Game
Midwest region
- Reasoning: "Here's the upset: I don't like the mojo right now with Kansas. We don't know about Hunter Dickinson or Kevin McCullar Jr., and without them they are not the same basketball team I'm going with Samford."
- Reasoning: "Dante vs. Kalkbrenner: what a matchup inside. But Dante is a freak athlete, and I think Kalkbrenner is going to have some problems with him. I like Oregon dancing into the Sweet 16."
- Reasoning: "As much as I think Dalton Knecht, Purdue has the National Player of the Year Zach Edey. I like the Boilermakers."
Final Four
- Reasoning: "I think the X-factor is going to be Cam Spencer, he's going to make shots. In what I think will be a great high-level game, I think UConn advances to the national championship."
- Reasoning: "Again, I think this is where Edey rises.”
National championship
- Reasoning: "This is the game that we've been wanting all season long between the two best, most consistent teams. And with the way UConn has played in the biggest moments, I think they win back-to-back championships."

New jersey man indicted in drunken boat crash that killed 70-year-old.
An Atlantic City man has been indicted for a drunken boating incident that killed a 70-year-old woman, the Atlantic County prosecutor’s office said Wednesday.
A grand jury indicted Jeffrey Jastrzembski, 54, on Tuesday on a charge of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Norma Michaels. She was swimming in the Intracoastal Waterway — alongside a residential dock by her shore house in Chelsea Heights — when she was fatally struck by Jastrzembski’s 20-foot Robalo boat on Aug. 12, 2023.
Jastrzembski “accelerated” the boat near the Albany Ave. Bridge and was traveling at a “high rate of speed in the direction of the docks” in the moments before the deadly crash, according to the prosecutor’s office. He then made an “aggressive left turn,” which caused the boat’s propeller to slam into Michaels.
Michaels, an Atlantic City resident, ran Norma Michaels Entertainment, a Philadelphia-based talent booking agency with clients that include the Phillies and Eagles organizations, the Manayunk bike race and the Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
In her obituary, she was described as “a fierce matriarch, self-made businesswoman, and beloved member of her community.”
Police said Jastrzembski remained on the scene and was not injured in the incident. A subsequent investigation revealed he had a blood alcohol level between 0.19% and 0.23% at the time of the incident. He was arrested in January.
Even without a fatality, drunken boating on New Jersey’s waterways is a punishable act . A first-time offender with a blood alcohol level from 0.08% to 0.10% can face a yearlong boating license suspension and the loss of vehicle driving privileges for three months, according to the Asbury Park Press. A boater with a higher blood alcohol level, meanwhile, could lose their right to drive a car for up to a year. In both cases, fines and jail time are possible.

Trump officially takes over the Republican National Committee
HOUSTON — It’s official: Donald Trump is in charge of the GOP.
Two days after Nikki Haley dropped her presidential bid, the Republican National Committee used its spring meeting here to install a new leadership team hand-picked by the former president, a formal signal of his takeover of the national Republican Party.
The RNC’s membership selected North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley to serve as the party’s new chairman, and Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to serve as the co-chair in unanimous votes.
“He will work relentlessly to elect Donald J. Trump as our 47th president of the United States, flip the Senate, expand our majority in the House of Representatives and help us in our individual states,” said Ohio RNC member Jim Dickey, who nominated Whatley for chair.
The election came after a brief bit of private leadership jockeying between Whatley and South Carolina GOP Chairman Drew McKissick, who ultimately did not run for the RNC’s top job after Trump publicly endorsed Whatley.
“Our country and indeed the entire world can’t take four more years of Joe Biden and Democratic control,” Whatley said during his acceptance speech. “In less than eight months we will determine not only the fate of the US but the rest of the word.”
Whatley, who has served as the RNC’s general counsel, replaces Ronna McDaniel. She was Trump’s hand-picked party chair after he won the presidency in 2016, but she has come under fire from the party’s grassroots after the GOP had other disappointing elections in the Trump era, in 2018, 2020 and 2022.
McDaniel gave lengthy farewell remarks, at times fighting off tears as she thanked her family. She listed a series of accomplishments during her seven years as party chair.
“We grew our email list from 3 million to 50 million subscribers,” McDaniel said. “We finally launched a small dollar fundraising platform … we were getting trounced by Democrats over and over again.”
She also made clear that the overturning of Roe v. Wade cost Republicans in the 2022 midterms, and she said she urged more candidates to address abortion, but most did not.
“Not every candidate made it to their destination,” she said. “We can’t put our head in the sand and ignore abortion and the Dobbs decision … The RNC was leading, asking candidates to talk about this issue.”
McDaniel, who got a standing ovation after her remarks, agreed to resign after Trump formally endorsed Whatley. But she continues to have supporters within the RNC, including Kansas RNC Committeewoman Kim Bochers, who praised McDaniel during the meeting’s invocation, saying she had “been through the fire.”
With the party’s new leadership in place and Trump allies firmly in control, the RNC’s next biggest need is clear: raise money.
President Joe Biden and a collection of affiliated Democratic committees have $130 million cash on hand, a number that was just $65 million for Trump and his affiliated committees.
“We have to raise a lot of money,” Lara Trump said during her acceptance speech, holding up a check she said was a $100,000 donation that she had secured at the spring meetings.
A fight over what to do with RNC cash has also created a rift among some members of the party, with an increasing number of Trump supporters urging the RNC to spend its resources on legal bills associated with Trump’s criminal and civil indictments.
Chris LaCivita, a top Trump campaign adviser who will have significant sway over the new RNC structure, has said he does not think party money should be used for Trump resources. But CNBC reported Thursday that there is increasing pressure from RNC members to help pay Trump’s legal bills.
Two resolutions filed by Mississippi RNC Committeeman Henry Barbour that would have functionally barred the RNC from paying Trump’s legal bills. The resolutions did not get near enough support to even be considered at the party’s spring meetings.
“It was a publicity stunt. Never had a chance,” said an RNC member who opposed the measures. “President Trump is the leader of the party, and those never had a chance.”
Whatley, who did not meet with reporters, did not specifically say if he supports using RNC funds for Trump legal bills in his acceptance speech
He told members that “every dollar” raised will be put toward winning elections.
“If a proposal or request comes to us that is not focused on winning in November, it will not be considered,” he said.

6 ultimate island-hopping itineraries for 2024
Explore the world from the deck of your own yacht with a skippered charter, bareboat or flotilla holiday. Whether you’re a first-timer, a foodie or a family, there’s a sailing itinerary to suit every type of traveller.
Craving a holiday with the freedom to escape the crowds and explore hidden coves, secluded bays and uninhabited islands? Dreaming of anchoring somewhere to take a dip without another person in sight? Sailing enables you to access remote spots that are often inaccessible by land and to experience the diversity of a region, exploring islands, villages and resorts in a single trip. Whether you're just starting out, or keen to set out with little ones in tow, these itineraries suit every type of sailor.
1. Best for first timers: British Virgin Islands (BVIs)
Calm seas, sheltered anchorages, reliable steady trade winds and easy line-of-sight sailing make the BVIs one of the world’s best sailing destinations for less experienced sailors. The proximity of its islands also means you only need to sail for an hour or two to gain a sense of adventure and achievement as you successfully navigate to the next port of call. Set sail in Tortola and continue on to Virgin Gorda to witness The Baths, a geological wonder made up of granite boulders that stretch down the beach into the sea. Look out for hawksbill turtles as you sail on to tiny specks of land such as the idyllic Saba Rock, and be sure to end the day with a rum cocktail or two at one of the region’s many laid-back bars, which are often perched on unblemished stretches of white sand.
2. Best for families: Croatia
The calm, clear waters of the Adriatic combined with favourable weather conditions in summer provide easy sailing for families and, with more than 1,000 islands dotted along the Dalmatian Coast, there’s a range of activities and attractions with short hops to keep kids engaged. Set sail from the picturesque marina village of Agana and cruise gently to islands such as Brač, Šolta and Hvar, encouraging children to help out on board while keeping an eye out for passing dolphins. With their sheltered bays and clear waters, these islands are ideal stops for families. Spend an afternoon paddling in Brač’s Bobovišća Bay, before setting sail for the remote islands of the Kornati Archipelago, a wild and beautiful national park known for its empty hiking trails. Sailing stops here can be educational, too, with a plethora of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picturesque port towns steeped in history.
3. Best for food-lovers: Italy
Why base yourself on land to sample Italy’s incredible gastronomy when you can sail from region to region tasting the very best food and wine at numerous ports of call? Sunsail’s SailEatalia’s Italian Cuisine Procida Flotilla departs from the glamourous port town of Procida and sails to the Pontine Islands along the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast, offering stops to taste local cuisine, from classic dishes to regional delicacies as well as the country’s finest wine. Sample Ischia's iconic stewed rabbit in an independent restaurant at the top of a mountain or try the Italian coastal delicacy alici da portare (pasta with anchovies, olives and capers) in the quaint fishing village of Cetara.
4. Best for winter sun: Antigua
Gloriously warm weather between December and May and around 365 powdery white beaches lapped by clear waters make Antigua a popular winter sun destination for British travellers. Sailors can also relax knowing the region has consistent trade winds, safe anchorages and fairly short distances between ports, giving you more time to explore a variety of attractions at your own pace. Drop anchor in Deep Bay to snorkel around the famous shipwreck the Andes , discover uninhabited islands and visit famous places like Nelson’s Dockyard to sip cocktails and dance to the lively music of traditional steel bands.
5. Best for culture vultures: Croatia
A cultural treasure trove with 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from Roman fortresses to hilltop castles, Croatia is a mecca for sailors with a penchant for history and art. Start and finish a week’s charter in Dubrovnik to explore one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities on Earth, touring ancient citadels and Renaissance palaces, and be sure to include Lokrum, home to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery. Sail north and discover Mljet National Park and the island getaway of Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of famed explorer Marco Polo, where museums, galleries and excellent restaurants line the beautiful cobbled streets and defensive walls of the town.
6. Best for island-hopping: Greece
With thousands of islands scattered fairly close together, sailing from one to another is a breeze with the promise of a remote white sand or perfect pebble beach around every headland. Sailors are spoilt for choice, but the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of the mainland, are ideal for beginners looking for tranquil stretches of gin-clear water with light winds and warm temperatures in summer. Sail to Ithaca or Kefaloni in the south or to Lefkas, Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu. While Corfu is known for its party vibe and high-end beach bars, others, like tiny Antipaxos, feature just a scattering of houses, no proper roads and a couple of charming waterside tavernas where you can watch local fishermen bring in the day's catch.

C-e-a-s-e and desist: 'The New York Times' goes after Wordle spinoffs

The word game Wordle is shown on a mobile phone in 2022. The New York Times is accusing some Wordle clone creators of copyright infringement violations.
The New York Times has sent takedown notices to "hundreds" of coders who've made clones of the popular word game, Wordle.
Wordle is a hit online sensation where players have to guess a five-letter word in six tries. Since the newspaper bought it in 2022 from creator Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle, the word game has spawned a litany of spinoffs , from the more complex Quordle to the irreverent Sweardle.
Now, the Times is accusing some Wordle clone creators of copyright infringement violations and asking that their code be removed from the website GitHub , a platform that lets developers publicly share their code. The news was first reported last week by 404 Media.
The Times has filed at least three Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown requests since January with coders on GitHub over allegations related to Wordle, 404 Media reported . The law allows copyright holders to request that any material infringing on their copyright be removed from the internet, according to the Copyright Alliance .
One of those takedown requests went to Minneapolis software engineer Chase Wackerfuss, who created a clone called Reactle. Programmers could use Reactle's code repository — the website's term for where code and other files are stored — to create Wordle spinoffs of their own.
The notice requested that Reactle's code repository as well as any repository created by a coder who used Reactle's code — or "forked" it — be deleted.
Games & Humor
Here's what's behind the wordle c-r-a-z-e.
Times spokesperson Jordan Cohen said "hundreds of people" were notified via GitHub , and issued the following statement:
"The Times has no issue with individuals creating similar word games that do not infringe The Times's "Wordle" trademarks or copyrighted gameplay. The Times took action against a GitHub user and others who shared his code to defend its intellectual property rights in Wordle. The user created a "Wordle clone" project that instructed others how to create a knock-off version of The Times's Wordle game featuring many of the same copyrighted elements. As a result, hundreds of websites began popping up with knock-off "Wordle" games that used The Times's "Wordle" trademark and copyrighted gameplay without authorization or permission. GitHub provided the user with an opportunity to alter his code and remove references to Wordle, but he declined."
According to the takedown request posted by 404 Media, the Gray Lady argued that some of those copyrighted elements include Wordle's green and yellow tiles indicating correct letter guesses as well as its 5x6 grid.
Reactle's creator Wackerfuss told NPR in a statement that he removed its repository from GitHub after receiving the takedown notice from the Times , and that his heart went out to the developers who had used Reactle to create word games of their own.
Twitter boots a bot that revealed Wordle's upcoming words to the game's players
"Over the last two years, thousands of people have helped contribute, either directly or indirectly, to Reactle. Whether their motivation was to learn software engineering, contribute their skills to improving the project, or fork the code and build a game, the intention was always to learn and have fun," Wackerfuss said.
"It's just a shame we're losing this software and the community around it."
The Times said in a May 2022 press release of its financial results that Wordle had enticed "an unprecedented tens of millions of new users" to the outlet and it had had its "best quarter ever for net subscriber additions to Games."

A wooden boat carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslim refugees capsizes off Indonesia’s coast

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — A wooden boat carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslims capsized off Indonesia’s northernmost coast on Wednesday, according to local fishermen who rescued six people. The survivors said more people were still on the boat.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The six, four women and two men, were moved to a temporary shelter in the Samatiga sub-district. The fishermen told The Associated Press the refugees’ boat capsized about 16 miles (25 Kilometers) from the coastline of Kuala Bubon Beach in Aceh province.
Amiruddin, a tribal fishing community leader in Aceh Barat district, said those rescued indicated that the boat was sailing east when it started leaking and then strong currents pushed it toward the west of Aceh. The six said others were still trying to survive on the capsized craft.
About 740,000 Rohingya were resettled in Bangladesh to escape the brutal counterinsurgency campaign by security forces in their homeland of Myanmar.
Thousands have been trying to flee overcrowded camps in Bangladesh to neighboring countries with Indonesia seeing a spike in refugee numbers since November which prompted it to call on the international community for help. Rohingya arriving in Aceh face some hostility from some fellow Muslims.
Indonesia, like Thailand and Malaysia, is not a signatory to the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention outlining their legal protections, and so is not obligated to accept them. However, they have so far provided temporary shelter to refugees in distress.
Last year, nearly 4,500 Rohingya — two-thirds of them women and children — fled their homeland of Myanmar and the refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh by boat, the United Nations refugee agency reported. Of those, 569 died or went missing while crossing the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, the highest death toll since 2014.
Returning safely to Myanmar is virtually impossible because the military that attacked them overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in 2021 . No country has offered them any large-scale resettlement opportunities.
