High Voltage - 10 Electric Boats to Watch For in 2023

2023 Riva El-Iseo electric runabout

It's no secret -- electric boating is coming. That brings with it a fair share of opinions, and there are good arguments on both sides.

Gas-powered engines have been the backbone of boating since the advent of the internal combustion engine, so that makes for a strong track record going back literally centuries. Electric boating is still in its infancy, relatively speaking, and with that emergence comes growing pains. In the simplest of terms, electric boating is in the midst of sorting out how it can match key performance metrics like range, total energy output, and reliability that are on par with its gas-powered counterparts. Naysayers aren't wrong to say that electric boating isn't yet there, but the data behind that statement won't hold up for much longer.

In fact, 2023 could be the year that the proverbial floodgates open.

Engine manufacturers like Mercury Marine, Vision Marine Technologies, Torqeedo, and others are in the midst of an electric revolution. Mercury's new Avator electric outboard is just the start from the almighty Brunswick Corporation, and the 180e outboard from Vision Marine is already setting records . Mercury has already made bold claims about their plans for electric boats in 2023.

The tidal wave cometh.

Boatbuilders like Sweden's X-Shore are currently leading the pack by inching ever closer to large-scale market viability. Even auto manufacturers like General Motor s are starting to intertwine with the marine industry to help both sides advance their technological prowess.

So, what's in store for electric boating in 2023? Lots. Considering we've already taken a look at what's in store for gas-powered boating in 2023 , now is the time to go electric.

Here are 10 electric boats to watch for in 2023:

1) The X-Shore 1

electric yacht 2023

As arguably the leaders of the electric boating movement, X-Shore has announced a new model with a drastically lower pricepoint than their previous offering, the Eelex 8000. While the Eelex 8000 continues to be the figurehead of the electric boating movement, the premise behind the 'X-Shore 1' is to make electric boating an achievable reality for boaters across the pricing spectrum. The 'X-Shore 1' is now primed to make a big splash in 2023. Read more .

2) Four Winns H2e Bowrider

electric yacht 2023

Four Winns, which is owned by the larger Groupe Beneteau conglomerate, announced late in 2022 that they would be offering one of their popular 'H' Series dayboats in an electric configuration. This comes on the heels of Beneteau, which owns Four Winns, Wellcraft, Scarab, Glastron, Prestige, and others, announcing they will be adding electric power across their portfolio . In partnership with the aforementioned Vision Marine Technologies, the Four Winns H2e is a solid dayboat with a respectable 180 horsepower from Vision's E-Motion 180e outboard. Read more .

3) The Cybertruck IS a Boat!

Tesla Cybertruck

Sure, it's not a 'boat' in the traditional sense, but its not not a boat. That's according to Tesla titan Elon Musk, who has claimed that the upcoming Cybertruck must be capable of serving as a boat in order to get from the Cybertruck assembly plant to nearby South Padre Island. It's a distance of 500m, and Musk claims that the Cybertruck must be 100% watertight and be built to accommodate such adventures. Considering that Tesla is the worldwide leader of all things electric, you can expect this to spill over into the marine world. Especially when boaters try taking their Cybertrucks for a ride around the marina... by water. Read more .

4) Riva El-Iseo

electric yacht 2023

One of the world's best boutique boatmakers has taken the plunge. Fabled Italian manufacturer Riva is known for their impressive yachts, but they dipped their toe in the water of electric boating by launching the 27-foot El-Iseo. Designed as a yacht tender. The stunning runabout will use a Parker GVM310 electric motor, which packs some impressive performance for its size. If Riva is starting to dabble with their small boats, the larger ones won't be far behind. Read more .

5) Godfrey 'Mighty G' Pontoon

electric yacht 2023

Not only is it a great name, but the 'Mighty G' from Godfrey will have 100% power as the renowned pontoon maker steps foot into electric boating. Sure, it's the 'Mighty G' but that clever play on words is actually for a relatively small platform with a 15'7'' LOA and just a 7'6" beam. But the thing is, that's plenty for a lot of pontoon boaters and daytrippers. The Mighty G will also have two configurations -- one for cruising and one for fishing -- and it's Torqeedo outboard will have power equivalent to a 25 horsepower gas-powered outboard. Small, but mighty. Read more .

6) Taiga 'Orca' PWC

electric yacht 2023

Sure, it isn't a boat, but a PWC is a watercraft, so we're putting Taiga on the list. And it's not for the novelty, the technology behind Quebec's premier PWC builder is nothing short of impressive. The Orca PWC has a walloping 160 horsepower and a top speed of 104 km/h, which puts it on par with any high-end PWC on the market. It can also recharge up to 80% in just 30 minutes. If you're the investing type, Taiga is also a publicly traded company that has been doing well on the stock market. The company secured another $100 million in private investment funding in 2022 alone. Read more .

7) DeAntonio D48 Formenter

electric yacht 2023

You might see a little overlap between the DeAntonio D48 Formenter and another boat on this list, but that's not a bad thing. The D48 is a beauty, but it also brings something to the table that no other boat on this list does -- hybrid power. The Formenter blends both gas and electric power which alternate at the primary power source depending on the boat's actibity. For low-mid speed maneuvers, two 15 kW retractable electric motors run the show. When it's go-time, a 400 hp Mercury outboard picks up the slack. Not too shabby. Read more .

8) Candela P-8 Passenger Boat

electric yacht 2023

Candela has only been around since 2016, but in that time they've done an exceptional job reimagining the hydrofoil. The hydrofoil is actually a very old concept (you might recognize the name Sir Alexander Graham Bell, you know the telephone guy, he patented the concept in 1908), and Candela has blended some proven design traits with modern technology to create some remarkable watercraft. Their new P-8 Passenger is intended as a commercial shuttle or tourist vessel, but it also has potential as a handy dayboat. It produces a tiny 5 cm (2 in) wake and operates in near total silence, so for those looking for peace and quiet around the cottage, you'd be hard pressed to find a smoother ride than the P-8. Read more .

9) The 'Arc One'

electric yacht 2023

The 'Arc' has a list of celebrity backers that include Will Smith, Kevin Durant, and P-Diddy, but don't let the Hollywood favoritism fool you. The Arc is legit. With a hefty financial backing, the company completed its first run in 2022 with it's Arc One , a 24-foot runabout that looks as unique as it performs. Visually it's a little... out there, but under the deck is packs a 220 kW battery pack that generates over 500 horsepower and a top speed exceeding 40 mph. Despite it's size and weight, it has enough juice for a 5 hour runtime, which is solid for the electric boat market. You can already reserve one with just a $1000 deposit, so get on that. Read more .

10) Pure Watercraft GM Pontoon

electric yacht 2023

Like we mentioned before, there's a growing interplay between auto and marine manufacturers when it comes to electric power. Both sides have ample resources and good ideas, so it makes sense they'd start liaising with one another to take advantage of each other's capabilities. General Motors was one of the first to make that camaraderie apparent when they purchased 25% of Seattle-based Pure Watercraft for a cool $150 million USD. The intention was obviously to explore each other's battery technology, which ultimately led to the launch of Pure Watercraft's new boat -- a 24-foot pontoon that uses PW's own twin outboards paired with GM's 66 kW battery pack. The result is a unique boat (just look at the pics), but an excellent insight into the future of electric boating. Read more .

Electric Cruiser R30

“This is different from others because you can actually stay on it,” John Vo, formerly the head of global manufacturing for Tesla and an executive at other automotive and aerospace firms, told Robb Report at the event. Vo founded Blue Innovations about a year ago, after completing a stint at Lordtown Motors as head of propulsion.

Knowing very little about boats when he launched the company, Vo is using the Tesla model, at least partially, to get his fledgling brand going. The plan is to build 10 to 15 boats next year, and eventually increase that to 300 to 500 units with a mega-factory—producing one R30 every 30 minutes, mixing robotics with human labor. The R30 will be priced at $300,000, similar to its foiling competitors Navier and Candela. Following the Tesla model, interested buyers can reserve a production slot for $5,000, which is refundable.

Electric Boat R30

The R30 is an interesting design, with an almost New England styling, given its navy-blue hull and beefy hardtop. But it’s also clearly a day boat with a large sunpad on the foredeck, sunbed in the rear cockpit, and platforms at the stern that fold out on three sides, adding six feet to its 10-foot beam. The boat also has a weekender cabin with a dining table that drops down to form a double berth, galley with fridge, sink and cooktop, as well as an enclosed head.

Solar panels on the hardtop will slow-charge the vessel to about 50 percent of peak power when the boat is not running. The batteries are lithium iron phosphate (LFP), says Vo, which are safer with have a longer life cycle than batteries used in most electric cars.

Electric Boat R30

The beauty of electric boats is the relative lack of noise, exhaust fumes, along with instant torque and responsive acceleration. Vo said that the company went with an inboard configuration rather than an outboard because it didn’t clutter up the stern of the boat. “The draft is still only 24 inches,” he says.

This 30-footer is also unique among electric boats because it doesn’t have a rudder. Instead, a computer controls the propellers to turn the vessel, or move it forward or backwards. “It can turn tightly in its own axis,” says Vo.

The helm functions and electronics were also developed in-house with the goal of delivering an automotive experience that is more intuitive than other boating helm stations.

“We’re trying to recreate what you have in a car where you’re getting all key data in one central place,” says Vo. “We wanted to make things less overwhelming for boaters who might be less experienced.” The helm is much simpler than a conventional helm station on most boats, with push buttons that reveal different functions and data. The R30 incorporates a chartplotter, sonar, safety cameras and satellite-based radar as well as a Wi-Fi router. The company is considering Starlink satellite receivers for more advanced Wi-Fi. All systems will be linked to its headquarters for troubleshooting and maintenance.

The first R30s should be completed and delivered next year.

Meet the latest way the superrich prove they're really, totally worried about the environment: $10 million electric superyachts

  • Nico Rosberg took the Sunreef 80 Eco, a luxury electric yacht, for a spin.
  • The yacht uses solar panels, wind, and hydropower for 10 hours of cruising per charge.
  • Amenities include a self-playing piano, gym, and hotel-like cabin.

There has been a lot of chatter about the future of electric vehicles in recent months. As it turns out, the superrich have already moved on to electric yachts.

Sunreef Yachts recently unveiled their second-generation Sunreef 80 Eco. According to the company, it is "an eco-responsible luxury craft combining electric propulsion, superyacht living spaces, reliable sailing performance and the latest green technologies in the industry."

Former Formula One champion Nico Rosberg recently took one for a spin and gave an inside look at the luxury toy. It should be noted that since retiring from racing, Rosberg has become an "Elon Musk-worshiping" tech investor and eco-entrepreneur . So, this type of tech is important to him, even if it is out of reach for you and your friends.

The base price for the Sunreef 80 Eco is $9.5 million and goes up from there.

The first thing you notice about the boat is the curved solar paneling, which is curved and built into the hull, roof, and even the sail mast. The panels cover over 160 square meters.

The yacht also has a hydro propeller and wind generators to help recharge the battery and power the appliances, water toys, and tender (think your own personal tiny boat to get to shore), all of which are electric.

On one full battery charge, the yacht can do up to 10 hours of cruising at 8-10 knots of speed. The boat does have a diesel generator on board as backup and for longer trips.

Another nice feature, from an eco perspective, is the lack of noise pollution. When the engine is running on battery, it is almost completely silent, as demonstrated here by Rosberg.

Of course, you can't have a luxury yacht without luxury amenities, and the Sunreef is loaded.

Rosberg's version came with a self-playing piano and a pair of TechnoGym treadmills on the deck. The treadmills go for about $4,000 each .

And then there is the cabin, which looks like it is straight out of a luxury hotel, with plenty of storage, a walk-in closet, and a walk-in shower.

You can watch the entire tour of the supertoy here.

The Rise of E-Boat Technology

  • By Kim Kavin
  • November 3, 2023

John Vo knows nil about boats. He says it’s ideal for an e-boat builder. “People ask us what experience we have, and I say, ‘Zip. Nothing. Zero,’” says Vo, whose team at Blue Innovations Group is preparing to launch its first electric boat, the R30, this autumn. “But you can’t use the same people from the same industry to revolutionize themselves.”

Vo, the former head of manufacturing for Tesla, is just one among many minds trying to bring electric-powered boats into widespread production. So many longtime boatbuilders are transitioning from internal-combustion to electric power , and so many other builders are popping up anew, that the president of the American Boat and Yacht Council says his agency’s safety experts are being “bombarded” with requests about technology that’s changing by the day. E-boat prototypes and launches are coming from long-standing marine brands such as Chris-Craft (the Launch 25 GTe) and Four Winns (the H2e) at the same time that newer brands are promising everything from an electric dayboat (the Blue Innovations R30) to a catamaran with world-cruising capability, but without generators or fuel tanks (the Zen50).

And as the boats get bigger than about 30 feet length overall, trying to understand all the different ways they can work becomes even more of a challenge.

“I expect, in the nautical industry, we will have full-electric propulsion, but we can expect hybrid energy,” says Michael Jost, founder of eD-TEC, an electric-propulsion system that will be on the Silent Speed 28 tender at the Cannes Yachting Festival this autumn. “There will be smaller boats that can run fully electric, and the bigger boats will have fully electric propulsion but hybrid energy.”

Before joining the marine community, Jost was a manager at Volkswagen, helping to lead its transition to electric power in vehicles. He says the recreational marine industry today is where automotive was decades ago: filled with ideas and trying to learn what the broader marketplace solutions will be. The difference between automotive and marine, he says, is that with marine, you can go from displacement to gliding to foiling.

That’s right: Foiling technology that lifts boats off the water’s surface is also part of e-boat thinking today—so are wing sails, which most boaters recognize as part of the high-tech builds used for America’s Cup racing. And, of course, there’s ever more ways to install solar power, which can help recharge the banks of batteries that make electric boats go.

Every possible idea is on the table, Jost says, because the way cruising boats have always been built just isn’t efficient enough for the switch to e-power, which includes heavy batteries that weigh boats down. “The boats of today are not true,” Jost says. “If you have a bad boat, you don’t see it. You put more power, more gasoline inside, and then you are happy. But if you go electric, you are not happy because you don’t get the range. The boat has to be much more efficient than an internal-combustion boat—and the boat business does not want to change the hull. That’s why we are looking to support builders working with the hydrodynamic foils.”

Vo says his team at Blue Innovations Group is also trying to think differently about boat design: Forget about the hulls that traditional molds were built to create, and wonder instead about what might be possible from scratch. “In the old days, anybody who came to Tesla with a long automotive resume, we threw it in the trash,” Vo says. “Otherwise, you’ve got these people with a lot of experience, and they can overwhelm you. Instead of building your vision, they will try to assimilate you, and you revolutionize nothing. You just add another mediocre company. It’s difficult but necessary for us not to hire anybody with boat experience until we reach a critical mass and launch the product. At that point, we’d be stupid not to incorporate their experience into our process.”

Then again, brands with marine experience are also trying to lead. At Mercury Marine, vice president of e-solutions Perissa Bailey—who previously was director of technology at Ford Motor Co.—says it’s understood that electric boats are still in the phase of early adopters, with companies trying to figure out exactly what consumers want. One thing they know for sure at Mercury Marine, she says: “They don’t want to compromise the time they spend on the water. In the early electrification days in automotive, there were a lot of questions about range anxiety. It forced consumers to think about how many miles they drive a day and what’s the cost of ownership for an electric vehicle for that many miles. We’re going through that same learning curve in marine. Customers are saying, ‘If my leisure boating activity typically consists of this many hours on the water, I don’t want to compromise that just because I go electric. And if there’s a series of activities I do, if I’m [riding on a PWC] or fishing or whatever I do, I don’t want to compromise those either if I go electric. I don’t want to have to adapt my usage pattern to a technology. I want the technology to adapt to that usage pattern.’”

The trick is that the technological solution for a boater who wants to cruise to dinner and back is likely to be far different from the solution for a boater who wants to cruise off the grid for months, says Julien Melot, CEO and designer at Zen Yachts, which is preparing to launch the Zen50 catamaran. It has solar power, along with a wingsail, with the latter adding the long-distance range that previous models lacked. “The last boat was great for coastal cruising, but I would not have sold it to a family that wants to cross the Pacific. If it gets cloudy or overcast, the laws of physics apply, and you won’t have enough power to escape the storm,” Melot says. “On the Zen50, with the addition of the wingsail, that problem is solved.”

As with some of the other brands in the e-boat space, Zen Yachts is seeing early adopters who don’t necessarily fit the profile of traditional boaters. “Our client base is not experienced sailors,” he says. “They are more attracted by the fact that you are self-reliant. If the world collapses one more time, they know they can take their boat out, and they’ll be fine.”

And some leaders in this space are already thinking past the boats. They’re focusing instead on where boaters will want to go, as more styles of e-boats take to the water. Silent-Resorts, which is affiliated with the catamaran builder Silent-Yachts, is now creating destinations to harness electric power and make recharging easy for all types of boats, no matter what comes next. The first location, in the Bahamas, is scheduled to finish construction later this year, with build-out starting on the second location, in Fiji, around that same time. “We’re talking with all the builders,” says Victor Barrett, CEO of Silent-Resorts. “We’re setting up in areas where cruising is popular, and we’re setting up the micro grid that connects the marinas, facilities and residences. If you have a house that’s not occupied, all that power is going into the central grid so the boats can plug in, charge fast and go. The boats can feed power into the island as well. We’ll be the first company in multiple locations to have Silent-Marinas ready to accept electric boats.”

All these advancements, of course, are far from inexpensive. The cost of a Blue Innovations Group R30 is about $300,000. The Silent Speed 28, Jost says, is likely to retail for about 500,000 euros (that was about $550,000 at press time). “The batteries are expensive,” Jost says. “You need new software. You have to develop it. And you have to make it lightweight. It might take about five years for the price to come down.” Until then, expect to pay as much as $440,000 to $660,000 for e-boats up to about 30 feet length overall, he adds. “It’s double what you pay for an outboard system, but the scale of combustion comes from the automotive industry, so if that industry loses scale by going electric, you will also lose that scale for the nautical industry on combustion.”

And the people buying e-boats right now often care more about innovation than prices. Melot says four Zen50 catamarans have been sold. The first and third are going to the East and West coasts in the United States; the other two are headed to Europe. Three of the four clients are Tesla shareholders. “Typically, the clients already have an electric car, they already have solar panels on their home, and the next thing they can buy is an electric boat,” he says, adding that for these folks, electric power is the top consideration. “They don’t want to hear about a yacht that has diesel on board.”

Torqeedo’s Deep Blue 100i 2500 is an inboard system that provides 100 kW of continuous power for planing powerboats. It’s made with the same type of lithium batteries that are now found in some cars, but with components that are waterproof and that come with monitoring to guard against short circuits. The company offers a nine-year warranty for boats in private use, with the hope that the long guarantee will help customers feel secure about the type of power. Torqeedo also markets Deep Blue as low-maintenance and emission-free.

Taking Orders Now

Blue Innovations Group is taking reservations for the R30, which is expected to cost about $300,000. Customers who put down $5,000 can get one of the first 100 hulls. For $1,000, customers can be next in line after that. As of this writing, more than 50 reservations were in hand.

For Day Cruising

While some e-boat builders are trying to solve design challenges for long-distance cruising, Blue Innovations Group is starting with a dayboat. The 30-foot R30 will have the capacity to carry 12 people with an estimated run time of eight hours and a top hop of 39 knots.

Even Stronger

Swedish e-boat builder X Shore recently announced a partnership with the German company Bosch Engineering to improve the performance and efficiency on the drive system aboard the 21-foot X Shore 1. Bosch’s background is in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, RVs, rail, ships and other industries. This partnership marks Bosch’s first foray into the world of e-boats for leisure use. The goal of the partnership is to share series production experience as well as proven high-performance components from the automotive world.

Floating Solar Concept

The team working on creating Silent-Resorts is talking with government officials in Fiji about deploying a floating ring that collects rainwater and generates solar power as an eco-friendly way to address two of the biggest challenges that hamper island development. Eventually, a similar system may also launch in the Bahamas.

There’s finally an electric vehicle with a connection to Tesla that can be piloted on water. No, it’s not the Cybertruck , it’s the Blue Innovations Group (BIG) R30, a new yacht that publicly hit the waves for the first time this weekend.

The boat was launched on December 16, in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the company is based. It will provide “the ultimate boating experience ,” according to John Vo, BIG’s founder and CEO. Before taking on the high seas, Vo was Tesla’s head of global manufacturing.

“The R30 was designed from scratch. We threw out the playbook most boatbuilders follow because if you squint your eyes at a boat show, most boats look the same,” said Vo. “The R in R30 stands for Revolution, we decided to offer something radically different, radically better.”

Former Tesla Exec Launches All-Electric R30 Yacht With 800 HP

The electric yacht is equipped with a 221 kWh battery pack that weighs 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) and powers two motors with a combined 800 HP (596 kW/811 PS), which will get it up to a targeted top speed of 45 mph (72 km/h). In addition, it comes with an integrated UI, and solar charging capability to make it a first-of-its-kind all-electric cabin cruiser.

Measuring 30 feet (nine meters) long, BIG bills the R30 as the perfect vessel for friends and families who want to enjoy the water. To that end, it has a “folding ocean terrace” that expands to allow for more deck space. It also comes with a kitchenette, a fridge, air conditioning, and a bathroom with a bidet.

First shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, interested customers for the R30 can reserve one for $1,000. If they want to be one of the first 100 to get an R30, they can pay for the “BIG Reservation,” which costs $5,000.

Production of the yacht is set to begin in the third quarter of 2024 (not Q2, as was initially indicated), and it has a targeted price of $300,000.

Winners of Gussies electric boat awards

Gussies Electric Boats Awards Winners 2023

Congratulations to all of the 2023 Gussies Winners!

After voting by the public and an International Judging Panel of 25 electric boat experts, these are the boats who have taken First Place in their respective categories as best representatives of ‘excellence in electric boats and boating’.

See all Gussies Finalists     See all  boats nominated

The awards are named after Gustave Trouvé, the French inventor who decided the best way to work on the electric motor propelling his prototype boat ‘ Le Téléphone ‘ along the Seine in 1874 was to devise a detachable unit so that he could tinker with the motor in his shop at home. It was the birth of the outboard motor.

Now, in 2023, more than 160 boats from 25 countries and every continent except Antarctica entered ‘The Gussies’ and carry on his legacy. Congratulations goes not just to our winners but also to all of the designers and builders and technicians and everyone involved in bringing these boat to life and for helping to grow electric propulsion everywhere. The future indeed looks very bright.

E-Motion Rudder Drive, an electric engine with… the Propeller installed into the Rudder

E-Motion Rudder Drive

Hanse Yachts introduces E-Motion Rudder Drive – an interesting propulsion type, with a special folding propeller….

An electric engine and a folding propeller have been installed into the rudder shaft, replacing the combination of diesel engine and sail drive. As a result, the propeller thrust is in line with the rudder position. This enables turning in the smallest circles or rotating around your own keel; it could be a perfect solution for maneuvering in narrow ports.

Making 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Hanse 315 equipped with four lithium-ion batteries has a range of up to to 30 nautical miles – enough for all European inland waters and many coastal waters. At lower speeds, the range is significantly increased. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.

The quiet Rudder Drive is also lightweight: 100 kg less than the diesel saildrive option. The Rudder Drive does not require a hole through the hull, lowering the resistance while sailing. The electric drive’s simplicity means less maintenance, as well.

From a standstill position, the yacht immediately starts to turn without having to pick up speed first. In addition, you enjoy all benefits of an electric engine. It will be the future?

Hanse 460 review: First in a new range

  • David Harding
  • January 26, 2023

The Hanse 460 is the first in a new range of Hanses. From new designers, she is already a big hit, with over 200 sold and a European Yacht of the Year win to its name. David Harding reports

hanse electric sailboat

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.

What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.

This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.

In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.

The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.

At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.

Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.

There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing

Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.

At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.

Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.

Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.

Lifestyle choices

Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.

A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.

Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.

Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

Technology cooperation for new sailing yacht drive

Rudder Drive, the new electric propulsion system for sailing yachts developed by Torqeedo together with the large-scale boat builder Hanse Yachts and rudder manufacturer Jefa, combines outstanding maneuverability and minimal weight with a powerful emission-free motor.

The core of this innovative concept is the proven and specially adapted Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, designed in to the rudder blade itself. The streamlined system replaces the combustion inboard or saildrive and removes the need for a separate thruster on the new sailing yacht Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive, which debuts at the end of October.

Outstanding maneuverability

Due to the unique rudder placement of the 4 kW (8 horsepower equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, the motor can apply efficient, directional thrust. The Jefa rudder blade’s range of motion was extended to a total of 100 degrees. Demanding maneuvers can now be accomplished without a separate thruster. While motoring, the yacht can spin on its own axis – both forward and in reverse. While docking, the stern can easily be maneuvered into the proper position. This is highly useful in windy conditions or in narrow slips.

Exceptional endurance with minimal weight

Power generation while sailing

With integrated Torqeedo fast chargers, the emission-free version of the Hanse 315 is fully charged in just three hours. The batteries can be recharged at the dock or during sailing when the Rudder Drive’s folding propeller is used to generate power. Torqeedo is the only manufacturer of electric boat propulsion systems offering industrial engineering, complete system integration and ISO 9001 certified serial production in Germany.

World launch at the Hanseboot Hamburg

For the first time, the new propulsion system will be presented installed in the Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive at the International Boat Show Hanseboot 2016 in Hamburg. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Hanse Yachts booth (hall 6, booth C108) on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 2 pm.

Nominee Spotlight: Hanse 510

  • By Andrew Parkinson
  • October 5, 2023

The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.

Bow of the Hanse 510

As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.

According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.

The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.

Hanse 510 rear

“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.”

The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.

Hanse 510 at anchor

The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.

Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space.

The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.

Hanse 510 interior

Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.

At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

For the record:

1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

The all-electric eWolf tugboat at the Port of San Diego

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

What candela’s electric hydrofoiling passenger ferry means for sustainable transportation.

The all-electric-powered Candela P-12 ferry flies over the water on hydrofoils

I would never say “I told you so,” but…now that Candela , the world’s leading producer of all-electric-powered hydrofoiling boats, has just closed the largest funding round in the company's history, I might be bold enough to say…”I’m not surprised.”

That’s because I’ve been closely following the development of this wonderfully smart company’s hydrofoiling boats since I test flew a P-7 near their small and efficient shop in Stockholm in 2021. So, I’m really not surprised they just raised over $25 million to expand production of their game-changing P-12 ferry. And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.

“Our investment perfectly aligns with Groupe Beneteau‘s ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating and unparalleled experiences,” says Bruno Thivoyon, CEO of Groupe Beneteau, the world's largest boat manufacturer (15 factories, 9 brands, and more than 8,000 yachts built annually) with a total revenue of over $1.5 billion in 2023. “Candela’s technology, enabling significantly more efficient electric vessels, will transform waterborne transport into its next sustainable phase.”

A Candela P-8 and P-12 underway near Stockholm, Sweden

“We couldn’t be more excited about having Groupe Beneteau on board,” says Gustav Hasselskog, Founder and CEO of Candela. “As the leading global boat company, their trust is a stamp of approval for our technology to transform waterborne transportation. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead."

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.

And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.

“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.

The Candela P-8 and P-12 hardly make a ripple as they fly over the water on computer-controlled ... [+] hydrofoils

Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.

“EQT Ventures has steadfastly backed Candela's vision to accelerate the shift towards fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans since 2021. The launch of Candela's P-12 vessels signifies a watershed moment in sustainable transport", says Lars Jörnow, Partner at EQT Ventures.

The only question is: when will we see a P-12 ferry here in the US?

Candela’s electric ferries multiply as the startup lines up $25M in new funding

hanse electric sailboat

Electric boat maker Candela is approaching cruising speed with $25 million in new funding and the first commercial deployment of its new P-12 ferry in New Zealand. The company has global ambitions for its highly efficient boats and has completed and delivered dozens of them — which is a lot in this industry!

Candela has been slowly upping the size of its vessels for years, starting with the considerably smaller C-7 and C-8 (noting the length in meters) — of which, as of this week, they have now produced a total of 70. The P-12, a ferry design that can handle up to 30 passengers, made its debut late last year .

Just last week, the P-12 was given its first assignment: ferry people around New Zealand’s Lake Manapōuri , a scenic destination but also, more importantly, the site of the country’s largest hydroelectric power station. And now staff at that station can get to work via clean-running boat rather than driving, which the companies estimate will save around 240 tons of emissions per year. It’s a start, and it will help keep the lake clean and quiet.

International interest in these boats is also evident in the participation of Groupe Beneteau, a more than century-old boating company that makes thousands of vessels yearly, in the funding round. Groupe Beneteau CEO Bruno Thivoyon expressed in the press release that investing in Candela makes sense as part of the company’s “ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating.”

Many legacy boating companies are embracing electric engines and next-generation tech; I spoke with the head of another major manufacturer, Brunswick’s Dave Foulkes, at CES about it. He said that the collaborations are fruitful because the small, growing companies need the income and reach, while the larger ones need ready-to-deploy tech. Like any other industry, you have to know when to buy and when to build, and big boating companies are happy to buy — or invest.

Candela’s boats use hydrofoils with electric engines mounted on the bottom to effectively fly above the surface of the water once they get past a certain speed, vastly reducing energy consumption — historically and understandably a sticking point for electric boating. The approach does necessitate a powerful autopilot to keep it balanced, and despite their assurances, I wonder about how they’d handle log collisions, but overall the advantages seem to outweigh the drawbacks.

I drove one over the summer in Seattle (watching closely for logs, rather common in Elliott Bay) and wished they would replace the gas-chugging fast passenger ferries with P-12s. Candela isn’t the only one pursuing this market, either; Navier is also attempting to woo coastal communities with the draw of quiet, energy-efficient transit and is currently shuttling Stripe employees around the Bay Area . And while Zin Boats has been quiet for some time, they are also nailing down markets for the next version of their vessel.

The $25 million round was led, as mentioned, by Beneteau, with participation from EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB.

Bought an EV in 2023? See if You Qualify for the $7,500 Tax Credit

Find out if the EV you purchased in 2023 meets the qualifications for the clean vehicle tax credit this tax season.

Drawing of an EV on the ground

The EV tax credit has undergone some changes in the last two years.

The  2024 tax season  is coming to a close, but if you haven't filed your 2023 tax return yet, the  EV tax credit of up to $7,500  is one of the biggest tax credits available to US taxpayers.

tax tips badge art

This robust tax break, which offers a credit of up to $7,500 with the purchase of a new electric vehicle, was overhauled by 2022's  Inflation Reduction Act , and since last year, the IRS and Treasury Department have been clarifying how and when you can use the credit.

Here's what you need to know about the revised EV tax credit for 2023, including which cars qualify and how to claim it. And if you're considering purchasing an electric vehicle in 2024 , learn what you'll need to do to claim the credit in 2025 .

For more, here are other tax credits you may be eligible for , including tax tips for home owners .

What are the requirements for the EV tax credit?

The Inflation Reduction Act made several major changes to the tax credit:

  • There is a price cap on qualifying EVs. For passenger cars, the  manufacturer's suggested retail price , or MSRP, must be $55,000 or less. For vans, SUVs and light trucks, the ceiling is $80,000.
  • Beginning in 2024, vehicles that contain battery parts  from "a foreign entity of concern"  will be unable to claim any of the credit. For critical minerals, the cutoff is 2025.
  • The manufacturing cap, which disqualified automakers that have manufactured more than 200,000 EVs, has been lifted.
  • There is also a ceiling on the  adjusted gross income  to qualify for the credit.

Income cap for EV tax credit

For the most part, these changes took effect on Jan. 1, 2023, and will remain in effect until Jan. 1, 2032. Always check  the IRS website  for updates.

How you can buy an EV in 2024 and get the credit at the same time

If you're buying an EV this year, you may be able to have your cake and eat it too. Starting in 2024, you can claim that credit when you purchase your clean vehicle at the point of sale, effectively lowering the vehicle's purchase price. This way, you won't have to wait till you file your taxes in 2025 to receive the credit.

Which EVs are eligible for the tax credit?

The Inflation Reduction Act broke the credit into two halves: You can claim $3,750 if at least half of the value of your vehicle's battery components are manufactured or assembled in North America. You can claim the other $3,750 if at least 40% of critical minerals -- like graphite, lithium and cobalt -- are sourced from the US or a trade partner. (Both minimum requirements increase in the coming years, with battery components reaching 100% in 2029 and critical minerals maxing out at 80% in 2027.)

Nearly 4 dozen are eligible for one of or both credits under the new provisions -- including EVs from Chevy, Ford, Tesla and VW -- which are in effect through Dec. 31, 2032. The list will likely grow as manufacturers submit updated information and change suppliers. Find the most up-to-date info on FuelEconomy.Gov .

How do I claim the EV tax credit?

To claim the tax break, known as the Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit, you will need to file  IRS Form 8936  with your tax return. (You'll need to provide the vehicle identification number for your vehicle.) This is a non-refundable tax credit, which means you use it against taxes that you owe -- once your tax bill hits $0, you don't get the additional money.

Can I claim the tax credit on a used EV?

Starting last year, preowned plug-in electric and fuel-cell EVs qualify for a credit of up to 30% of their purchase price, maxing out at $4,000.

There are certain restrictions:

  • The used EV tax credit can only be claimed once in a vehicle's lifetime. Subsequent owners will not be eligible.
  • The MSRP of the car must be $25,000 or less.
  • The car must be at least 2 years old. If you bought it in 2023, it must be from model year 2021 or earlier.
  • Used vehicles purchased before 2023 are not eligible.
  • The vehicle must have been purchased from a qualified dealer who reports the transaction to the IRS.
  • The vehicle must otherwise meet the requirements for the EV credit.

Below are income caps for owners of used EVs wishing to claim the credit.

Used EV income cap

Do individual states have ev tax incentives.

In addition to the federal EV tax credit, a number of states offer rebates for clean vehicles. Some can't be taken in conjunction with the federal credit, so be sure to get all the information before claiming anything.

California's  Clean Vehicle Rebate Project  offered credits up to $7,500 for the purchase or lease of certain new EVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell vehicles, but the program expired on Nov. 8, 2023. California still offers a host of  state and local incentives  to EV buyers.

The Energy Department's Alternative Fuels Data Center  has information on various incentives offered by states, utilities and private organizations.  EnergySage , an online marketplace for home solar-energy solutions, has a list of state rebate programs.

Can I get a tax credit for installing an EV charger?

The Inflation Reduction Act also extended the tax break for residential charging systems through 2032 and made it retroactive to Jan. 1, 2022.

It's worth $1,000, or 30% of the cost of buying or installing the system, whichever is less.

The credit now also applies to  bidirectional charging equipment , which lets you use your EV to power other appliances or even your home. Not many models have that capability, but it can be handy in an outage or other emergency.

To claim the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, you must file IRS  Form 8911 .

Canoo spent double its annual revenue on the CEO’s private jet in 2023

electric yacht 2023

Tucked inside Canoo’s 2023 earnings report is a nugget regarding the use of CEO Tony Aquila’s private jet — just one of many expenses that illustrates the gap between spending and revenue at the EV startup.

Canoo posted Monday its fourth-quarter and full-year earnings for 2023 in a regulatory filing that shows a company burning through cash as it tries to scale up volume production of its commercial electric vehicles and avoid the same fate as other EV startups, like recently bankrupt Arrival . The regulatory filing once again contained a “going concern” warning — which has persisted since 2022 — as well as some progress on the expenses and revenue fronts.

The company generated $886,000 in revenue in 2023 compared to zero dollars in 2022, as the company delivered 22 vehicles to entities like NASA and the state of Oklahoma. And it did reduce its loss from operations by nearly half, from $506 million in 2022 to $267 million in 2023. The revenue-to-losses gap is still considerable though: The company reported total net losses of $302.6 million in 2023.

Still, one only needs to look at what Canoo is paying to rent the CEO’s private jet to put those “wins” into perspective. Under a deal reached in November 2020, Canoo reimburses Aquila Family Ventures, an entity owned by the CEO, for use of an aircraft. In 2023, Canoo spent $1.7 million on this reimbursement — that’s double the amount of revenue it generated. Canoo paid Aquila Family Ventures $1.3 million in 2022 and $1.8 million in 2021 for use of the aircraft.

Separately, Canoo also paid Aquila Family Ventures $1.7 million in 2023, $1.1 million in 2022 and $500,000 in 2021 for shared services support in its Justin, Texas, corporate office facility, according to regulatory filings.

This could be chalked up to small monetary potatoes if Canoo reaches its revenue forecast for 2024 of $50 million to $100 million.

We’ve asked Canoo for comment and will update this post if we hear back.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

electric yacht 2023

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Electric boats

Veer launches new low-cost electric boat for the average joe that won’t sink your wallet.

Avatar for Micah Toll

Electric boats offer major advantages for beginner and experienced boaters alike. But cleaner, quieter and more enjoyable boating often comes with a seriously hefty price tag. Or at least it used to before the Veer X13 was announced earlier this week.

Compared to the prices we’re used to seeing, the Veer X13 is a welcome change.

Electric boats like the Candela C-8 , Navier N30 , Arc One , and the R30 from Blue Innovations Group are all above (or well above) US $300,000.

We’ve seen somewhat lower-cost model announcements recently, like the X Shore 1 at US $139,000 or the POL Lux at US $135,000. But even those prices are out of reach for the casual boater that just wants to go fishing on the weekends without scaring off the fish or inhaling exhaust fumes.

That’s where the electric Veer X13 comes in, which is priced at… TBA. OK, so the company hasn’t shared pricing details for the electric version of the boat yet, but Veer unveiled two versions of the boat with the ICE-powered version carrying a 9.9 hp outboard engine starting at just $11,995. The company hasn’t shared pricing on the more interesting electric version yet, but expect to be able to buy around 10 of them for the price of even the cheapest electric boats above.

veer x13 electric boat

So how did they do it? Well, they basically just give you much, much less boat.

The Veer X13 isn’t a 30-foot luxury speedboat like most of the other big-name electric vessels on the market .

Instead, it’s a 13-foot (4-meter) two-seater meant for you and a partner to enjoy a minimalist day on the water.

It’s also not produced from hand-laid carbon fiber or fancy-formed aluminum like other big-dollar electric boats. The X13 is manufactured from rotomolded polyethylene. That’s basically the way they make kayaks, and it is a cost-effective way to produce large and hollow plastic parts, like boat hulls. If you’ve ever wondered why a canoe costs three to four times the price of a kayak on average, there you go.

But the Veer X13 is much more than a kayak. And it also includes more. The boat comes with a galvanized trailer as part of the price, making it easy for new boaters to get started right away.

The X13 uses the newly unveiled Mercury Avator 7.5e electric outboard motor , which makes sense as Veer was started by Mercury’s parent company, Brunwick.

The Avator 7.5e is a fairly low-power system with just a 750W continuous-rated motor and a peak power rating of 1,000W.

Mercury claims that the electric outboard performs closer in speed and acceleration to a Mercury 3.5hp FourStroke outboard, thanks to the higher torque and better performance of electric motors compared to gas engines.

The outboard motor uses 1 kWh battery packs that slide in and out of the unit for easy swapping. A single 48V battery is said to be good for 45 minutes when motoring flat out or longer at reduced speeds. Carrying a second or third battery makes it easy to stay out longer or travel farther. The 16-pound (7-kilogram) batteries are around the size of a small gas can that many boaters are used to keeping on board.

Top comment by Pedro

Couldn't you buy the outboard and hook it to any boat? It would be great of it ddn't use proprietary batteries and you could hook up something like an ecoflow.

The electric outboard includes a multipurpose tiller handle that can adjust up, down, left, or right for comfortable steering from any position or with either hand. It also folds down to become a convenient carrying handle when removing the outboard to carry it away from the boat.

Electrek’s Take

As much as I’ve enjoyed covering and test riding some of the fanciest and most powerful electric boats hitting the market over the last few years, I know that luxury electric boats aren’t going to make the kind of quick impact we need in the boating community. It’s affordable electric boats that will actually displace the polluting smaller vessels that are so popular on lakes, rivers, and bays around the world.

Boats like this new electric Veer X13 have the potential to do just that. Most average Joe’s aren’t going to buy a $300,000 electric boat. But if they can get this sucker out there for $15,000, trailer included, now that might be tempting to a lot of folks who never thought they’d be able to own an electric boat before.

There needs to be something in between the high-dollar luxury electric speedboats and the $1,000 underpowered Chinese electric boat I bought on Alibaba . And this could be it.
