AMELS Yachts – Operating Since 1918

The Netherlands has a rich history of prosperous shipyards. Shipbuilding companies like Feadship, Royal De Vries, and VanDutch are all based in this country.

But very few of them can claim to be as old as Amels. However, age isn’t the only noteworthy thing about Amels Yachts. They’ve got so much more going for them.

AMELS yachts brief history

Amels shipyard was founded in 1918. For about 64 years, they built magnificent sailing yachts—among other types of maritime vessels. In 1982, they shifted their focus to luxury superyachts.

From this point, it became the goal of many high-net-worth people to own an “ Amel.”

The shipyard specialized in semi-custom superyachts and often created a frenzy with their Limited Edition “Amels” series.

This is the case with the series designed by Tim Heywood. One of the yachts from this series is the 50-m Tigre d’Or .

The intermingled histories of the Amel shipyard and Damen Yachting (DY) might lead one to believe that both companies have always existed as one.

But it’s important to know that even though DY owns Amels (as it has for more than a hundred years), the latter had existed for about nine years before its present parent company (DY) was founded in 1927.

Notable Launches

Amels yachts built and launched the Hona in 2004. Redman Whitely Dixon designed it, and it measures 82m.

They also constructed Here Comes The Sun in 2016. It’s their largest yacht yet, with a length of 89m and a top speed of 17 knots.

Amels has two shipyards, both of which have climate control technology and house up to more than 200-m yachts. Their services include the designing, building, and refitting of vessels.

Relying on the powerful potential shipbuilding company Damen Group, Amels produces unique luxury yachts in the category up to 100 meters - vessels that combine the beauty of classical forms and modern technical equipment, including the latest security systems. The company positions its yachts as a symbol of longevity, beauty and comfort .

The powerful Amels docks can be enough to build yachts up to 200 meters, and the simultaneous construction and repair of several superyachts . The company specializes in the construction of yachts from 40 to 70 meters, and the construction process takes about two years.

Currently the company has introduced new concept of LIMITED EDITIONS, which allows to create a luxury yacht in a short time and with significant cost savings. Concept is embodied in a series of yachts AMELS 171 ( 52 meters ) and AMELS 212 (64.7 meters). Architect for these yachts - the famous Tim Heywood.

The First Amels 200 Has Launched

Amels in the Netherlands has launched its first Amels 200 , which is an evolution of the builder’s Limited Editions Amels 188.

Hull No. 1 of the Amels 200 has a length overall of 197 feet. Interiors are by Reymond Langton Design, with exteriors by Tim Heywood. Naval architecture is by Damen Yachting.

“There are many features of this design that bring a smile to my face,” Heywood stated in a press release. “The many flying buttresses, the complex winding surfaces, the upturned deck ends, the integrated life rafts, the sculptural mast and the complex stern—all form a harmonious design that sits securely in her environment, of which I am extremely proud. I believe her delicate, fluid lines will prove to be timeless, and she will still look as attractive in 50 years’ time, as she does now.”

Gross tonnage on the Amels 200 is 1,015. Power is hybrid-electric. Features include an elevator that services four decks, an air-conditioned gymnasium on the sundeck, and full-height windows in the owners’ stateroom. Accommodations are for 12 guests and 13 crew.

Burgess represented the owner in purchasing the yacht, which is expected to be delivered later this year.

What else is new at Amels and Damen Yachting? They just announced the sale of the 180-foot yacht support vessel Gene Chaser , which has a research laboratory on board. Gene Chaser will be used alongside the 180-foot Amels Gene Machine .

The Amels Shipyard story began in 1688. Once a small fishing port in Vlissingen, Netherlands, the shipyard complex was eventually expanded and still serves as the location for the Damen headquarters. The Amels we know today began in 1918 as a boat building business in the Northern part of the Netherlands. At the time, Amels was just a small shipyard. Producing about 100 vessels ranging from wooden fishing boats to steel tugboats. With plans to grow the company, Amels eventually moved their small shipyard to the center of Makkum, a quaint village in the Netherlands. There, skilled artisans worked to create stunning ships, all of which paved the way for bigger, more luxurious ships. In the mid-late 1970s, Amels began crafting luxury vessels. This shift in production helped to elevate Amels to a new level. In 1991, Damen acquired Amels, preserving the name “Amels” for its notorious quality and craftmanship. 

Growing the brand

Since 1991, Damen has continued to expand its footprint in the luxury yachting market. Taking over his father’s shipyard in 1969, Kommer Damen grew the business from six employees to over 12,000 with 35 shipyards globally. The family-owned legacy of Damen yachts continues to thrive. Today, Amels shipyard creates industry-shattering designs, raising the bar on what is possible. Entering the luxury yacht market in 1982, the 48m KATALINA was the first luxury yacht built by Amels. Situated in Holland, this pristine warehouse continues to produce the highest quality yachts available. Amels is a subsidiary of the Damen Group and is one of the largest luxury yacht builders in Holland.

The Amels 60 limited-edition yacht is a product of over three years of research and development. Setting the bar to new heights yet again, the Amels 60 offers the yachting experience of a lifetime. A harmonious balance between full custom and semi-custom, the Amels 60 has allowed for faster production time, greater value, and the same notorious Amels quality.

Explore the seven seas without leaving a trace thanks to the cutting-edge hybrid technology. While Hybrid yachts are still relatively new to the world of luxury yachting, Amels has put years of research into making their hybrid models just right. Damen’s in-house design team in collaboration with the in-house research laboratory has created a stunningly efficient yacht.

The Amels 60

From the outside, the Amels 60 is breathtaking. Standing proudly over the water, designer Espen Øino describes the yacht as “a dynamic design for the future.” The Amels 60 boasts 5,231 Sq ft (486 sq m) of exterior deck space. Included in that deck space is a shaded dining area with 360º ocean views, raised level foredeck for sun loungers (also doubles as a helipad), and a steamy six-person jacuzzi. 

While the ample exterior spaces aboard the Amels 60 are nothing short of extraordinary, the interior spaces are equally as impressive. The Studio Indigo team has worked tirelessly to create a design concept beyond what is expected. When it comes to the interior design of the Amels 60 yacht, Studio Indigo says this, “Consistency of materials, architectural detailing and form means spaces flow easily into the next, thereby creating the illusion of endless space.” The generous interior space lends itself to the generous ceiling heights of up to 2.2m (7’2”). Exploring the interior of the Amels 60 is like seeing a work of art for the first time. Every room onboard features a new hidden design element, keeping you surrounded by beauty at every turn.

The AMELS 200

The Amels 200 boasts a large volume yet modest carbon footprint. Allowing for unrestricted navigation of the world’s beautiful waters without leaving a trace. At the forefront of sustainability, Amels is committed to building only the highest quality vessels for owners and guests to collect, enjoy, and cherish for years to come. 

Combining world-renowned designer Tim Heywood’s expertise with Amels shipyard notorious craftsmanship, it’s no wonder why the Amels 200 is already selling quickly. The Amels 200 features a length of 60m (197’) and a beam of 10.6m (35’). The Amels 200 yacht boasts an impressive gross tonnage of 1,015. The Amels 200 is compliant with the highest emission regulation standards. The efficiency of the Amels 200 lends itself to the commitment to sustainability and a love for the ocean.

THE AMELS 200

When it comes to the sundeck, it doesn’t get much better than this. With a total of 493 square meters (about twice the area of a tennis court) of exterior deck space (5,307 sq ft), the possibilities are endless. The spacious beach club features a sauna, steam shower, and changing room. Additionally, the interior stair access takes you from the Main Deck saloon to the beach club with privacy and comfort. Furthermore, the yacht features an extended fixed stern 31 sq m swim platform (329 sq ft) in teak, with a removable swim ladder. Unveiled by curved glass doors is a massive 7-person jacuzzi along with several plush sunbeds. For your convenience, the deck forward of the jacuzzi converts to a touch-and-go helipad with ease. 

The interior of your yacht should feel like home but better. Luckily, the Luxury Projects team has created a space that is sure to feel like home. The ceiling heights aboard the Amels 200 are generous, to say the least, boasting heights of 2.2m (7’2”) on all four guest decks onboard. The dining area features large sliding glass doors, allowing for direct access to not only the dining area but the main saloon as well. The owner’s suite features massive windows, a full office, a stunning en suite bath, and more. All in all, the Amels 200 presents a harmonious balance between luxury and sustainability. 

THE AMELS 242

The Amels 242 yacht is 74m (242’) of pure luxury. Described as “the perfect size for a yacht,” the Amels 242 has it all. Perhaps one of the most notable features on board, the dedicated owner’s deck allows for ultimate privacy. Designed to enhance the simple pleasures in life. The main deck offers a 6.7 meter (22 ft) long, 3.4 meters (11 ft) wide swimming pool. The perfect gathering place for family and friends, the pool is surrounded by plush sun chairs. 

The interior spaces aboard the Amels 242 are nothing short of extraordinary. Designed by award-winning designer Andrew Winch, the interior of this yacht is truly a work of art. Warm neutral tones create a sense of comfort thought the yacht. As you make your way to the sky lounge, you’ll notice the many unique design elements including the ornate “champagne bar” for guests to relax, have a drink, and enjoy the view.  Upon entering the main saloon, guests are greeted with two massive curved doors, opening up to the main saloon and a 14-person dining table.

The owner’s suite is outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows. Spacious his and hers bathrooms also feature large windows for your viewing pleasure. The owner’s deck also features a 75 square-meter Owners Lounge (807 sq ft). Here, sunshine beams through the windows creating the perfect space to unwind. 

Perhaps one of the most luxurious spaces onboard, the wellness center and spa. The huge full-beam 75 square-meter (807 sq ft) Wellness Center can be configured into a multipurpose space. 100% MADE IN FRANCE

Laminators, carpenters, varnishers, electricians, plumbers, mechanics, riggers, deck fitters, upholsterers… More than 30 tradesmen work together in the design and construction of sailing boats. Buying a yacht is a purchase like no other; it is part of a dream, a lifestyle that we build. For AMEL’s employees the conception of each boat is treated as a unique project. Active listening which anticipates requests, leads to proposals and facilitates the process until the owner takes charge of the boat and is guided with its maintenance. For Amel, a client, like a yacht, is not just a number, but is unique and part of the family.

Henri Amel, who was born on 16th April 1913 as Henri Tonet, was fascinated by sailing from a very young age. At the end of his teenage years, he began sailing on small yachts. He started to build boats in his bodywork business in Paris. After being called up for war, he continued his boat-building activities in Lyon. He was wounded in one eye during the war and lost his sight completely shortly afterwards for several years. But Henri Amel never gave up his dream to build yachts that would be robust, comfortable and easy to manoeuvre.

The beginnings

Les chantiers AMEL is created in La Rochelle when Henri AMEL, who until then had been entrusting the construction of his yachts to external yards, takes over the company ARPIN (Ateliers Rochelais de Polyester Industriel et Naval), based in the Ville en Bois district. At the time he had over forty employees, including his designer Jacques Carteau, the future technical director then right hand man of Mr. Amel, then CEO of Chantiers AMEL. Since 1962 AMEL has also had a base in the Mediterranean, in the new port at Hyères.

The La Rochelle workshops produced the Copain, the Pampero, the Super Mistral Sport and the Euros 39. As a pioneer in polyester construction, AMEL manufactures its boats using its own glass fibre, assembling via stratification internal bulkheads, deck and hull in a single piece, forming a perfectly waterproof and highly resistant structure.

On 5th February 1968, ARPIN’s workshops were completely destroyed in a fire. Henri Amel built new yards in Périgny, a new business park in La Rochelle. These new premise were inaugurated in January 1969 and would produce every one of AMEL’s yachts up to the current models.

21st – 24th September 1973:  first Grand Pavois in La Rochelle, on the initiative of Henri Amel, Michel Dufour, Fernand Hervé and Roger Mallard, four La Rochelle-based manufacturers.

The Coconut Road

Oct 1975 to June 1976:  La Route des Cocotiers: Mr. Amel crossed the Atlantic to the West Indies then passed through the Panama Canal to Polynesia on board the Meltem “Capitoune II”, which he had promised to deliver personally to his customer and friend in Tahiti. He was accompanied by 3 crew-mates. During this journey Mr. Amel designed the Maramu, working with Jacques Carteau at a distance.

January 2014:  Jean-Jacques Lemonnier leaves his position as chief executive and is replaced by Emmanuel Poujeade, Chantiers AMEL’s administrative and financial director, who joined the company in March 2000. Mr. Lemonnier remains Chairman of the Board.

AMEL 64 at the “Boot” Düsseldorf

January 2015 :  AMEL 64 is presented for the first time in an indoor boat show at the Düsseldorf “Boot”. The exhibited model features new interiors now proposed by AMEL with light wood species and a refreshing design.

September 2016 :  Creation of the AMEL Club with its blog dedicated to AMEL owners.

September 2017 :  Launching at the Cannes Yachting Festival of the new model, the AMEL 50, a 15.50-meter sloop.

European Yacht Of The Year

January 2018:  The AMEL 50 is voted European Yacht Of The Year in the Luxury Cruiser category.

September 2019:  Launch at the Cannes Yachting Festival of a new model, AMEL 60, sloop of 18m.

Renowned shipyard, Amels , has made a significant stride in the luxury yacht industry with the successful launch of its Amels 8001 model. This 80m (261ft) superyacht was seen outside her construction shed for the first time since its introduction in March 2022. The Amels 8001 is now set for her voyage to Damen Yachting's main shipyard in the Netherlands for the final outfitting stages.

The Amels 8001 is the first of the next generation of Amels Limited Editions motor yachts and is expected to be delivered to its new owner in 2025. This timeline is a testament to Damen Yachting ’s fast delivery promise, a hallmark of the 50+ Amels Limited Editions delivered to date.

Featuring design input from by celebrated designer Espen Øino, the first Amels 80 boasts a modern exterior design, infused with sustainable materials and innovative hybrid technology. Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, the design studio behind the yacht's custom interiors, will start shaping the interiors once the yacht arrives in Vlissingen, the Netherlands.

Characterized by a neutral and natural palette, with materials treated to remain as pure as possible, this striking superyacht hosts many features including a 200sqm sun deck, a waterside beach club that opens on three sides, an indulgent wellness area and spa, a dedicated owner's deck, and large framed windows for sweeping views on the main deck. The yacht also houses a multitude of watercraft and toys, plus a helicopter landing area.

A project that defines Amels' commitment to delivering high-quality, luxurious, and customizable yachts, the first hull of the Amels 80 sets itself as a benchmark for future builds and luxury yacht charters .
