Riva 110 Dolcevita review: Subtly asymmetrical yacht dares to be different

The hull barrels across the wave tops with nonchalance verging on disinterest

The Riva 110 Dolcevita is a masterclass in understated excellence, as expected from such a powerhouse brand

The global market for motor yachts of this size is febrile, cut-throat and small. A successful production run of a new model might amount to a couple of dozen units over its three- or four-year life, often much less, while development costs are measured in millions. Certain truths are held to be self-evident. Ignore them at your peril. It’s a brave shipyard that takes a risk.

The designers of the new Riv a 110 Dolcevita can perhaps be forgiven if it bears a passing resemblance to a lot of other shipyards’ attempts to appeal to the same small set of customers. You can tell with a glance what you’re getting: a full-beam master suite on the main deck, four spacious guest ensuites down at the waterline in that beamy hull and a spectacular saloon with huge windows to open up picture-perfect views of the seascape.

What this analysis doesn’t acknowledge, though, is the power of the Riva brand. It’s double-edged. Its effects are felt both inside the shipyard and out. Some customers, still, are happy to suppress their powers of rational discernment and buy a boat simply because it has a Riva badge on the side.

Back in the drought of the 1980s, such was the management’s reliance on this dwindling band of devotees that its complacency nearly sank the shipyard. Luckily it was saved, first by Stephen Julius and then by Norberto Ferretti, and to such effect that that happy band, apparently, is no longer dwindling.

Effortless chic.

Inside the organisation, the Riva name creates pressures that do not afflict other shipyards. Of course every successful manufacturer has its own production standards, but at Riva the designers and craftspeople are trying to satisfy standards which have been created for them by their company’s own mythology.

While it might not be realistically feasible, these days, to build their boats to a higher technical standard than other elite production shipyards, they nevertheless have to look like they do. Such are the expectations of romantics smitten by pictures of Brigitte Bardot in her plywood Riva speedboat .

To take a stroll through a new Riva motor yacht is a visual and tactile experience of the kind you get in custom superyacht yards. The emphasis on surfaces and finish quality, whether it’s the steel and marble in the bathrooms or the leather and lacquer in the living areas, underlines the importance of creating the correct impression. It’s expensive, and it has to look expensive – but without trying too hard.

Understated excellence

The design language in the 110 Dolcevita is classic modernist, shown to best effect not just in the stunning saloon but also in the pared-back white panelling of the lower-deck corridor and in the absence of such distracting detailing as handles or hinges.

The cabins’ wardrobe doors would try the patience of the most dedicated design buff, staring back blankly and offering no clue whatsoever to the secret of how to get them open. (Push the vertical panel, insert fingers in rebate and pull.)

With a hull nearly 24ft (7.27m) wide and no shortage of height in its profile, the 110 Dolcevita can boast some well-proportioned accommodation spaces, with headroom of 6ft 7in (2.01m) or more pretty much everywhere, and full-size berths in all the cabins.

The double in the forward guest ensuite on the starboard side can split into two berths – each 31in (79cm) wide – and with its drop-down Pullman deployed this would make a popular kids’ cabin.

Noteworthy options in the 110 Dolcevita’s interior include a huge, full-beam VIP suite down below, formed by merging the two midships ensuites. You can also select a pair of folding balconies on the main deck, at each end of the table, which would make an unbeatable spot for dinner on a warm, still evening.

Even leaving aside these temptations, though, along with the assured interior design and exemplary finish, it would be hard at this stage to pinpoint exactly what the 110 Dolcevita offers that others don’t. Understated excellence is everywhere but those unique little touches that one expects of a Riva seem harder to come by.

Even the flooding tender garage – a superb system that sees the beach club platform continue its descent into the briny until the sea comes in to float the Williams 505 – is a Ferretti Engineering innovation, which has been seen on other yachts from the Group.

The internal steel frame of the superstructure, on the other hand, is something novel. Completely hidden, it all makes sense once you realise that those slender mullions and supports between the saloon windows, which make a spectacular success of such an expansive glazed area, simply wouldn’t be strong enough to support the flybridge if they were made of glassfibre.

Up on the flybridge itself, meanwhile, the playfully mismatched glass panels in the hardtop might not be risky enough to be described as brave, but they are certainly unique, and as an example of the sort of flair that Riva buyers seek, they are both practical and pretty.

You won’t find anything like them in any other production boat. Their daring asymmetry provides a hint as to the core feature of the 110 Dolcevita – the design touch that provides the yacht with its personality, and helps make it a Riva.

You need to stand on the bow to appreciate it. Look aft, down the starboard side, and the walkway descends via the conventional external companionway to the main deck, from which you can enter the saloon via the side door, or continue aft to the cockpit.

Look down the port side, however, and the walkway takes you up a gentle slope to the flybridge, with access to the helm station, the upstairs dining table and aft to the sunbathing area.

Performance

It’s not just those hardtop panels that are asymmetrical. It’s the entire yacht, done in such a measured, understated way that you hardly notice. It’s very Riva.

The other thing that’s very Riva is the 110 Dolcevita’s performance. A Riva has to go well – speed is part of the brand promise – and a pair of 2000-series MTU V16s in a splendidly engineered machinery space provide a whopping 5,276hp.

Our test yacht, well loaded with around seven-and-a-half tonnes of fuel and water and the substantial tender in the garage, clocked a two-way best of 26.8 knots.

A heavy boat will always feel that way unless its power-to-weight ratio is unusually favourable, and that’s not an engineering possibility in motor yachts of this size. But the 110 Dolcevita had quite lively acceleration, running from tickover to 20 knots in 15 seconds, and to 26 knots in just 15 more.

In fact, it provided an involving drive, with precise if sedate handling, and a solidity in the cruise, which promises to translate into comfort on passage. It was quiet, and at a cruising lick of around 23 knots its safe range would be around 400 miles. Pretty impressive for such a big boat, but just what we expect from a Riva.

The Riva 110 ‘project, Riva’s new fiberglass flagship, is a promise of style, design and performance to reach levels never seen before. Through the collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, the studio founded by Mauro Micheli together with Sergio Beretta, the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee, and the Engineering Department, Riva 110′ promises to be a magnificent and beautiful flybridge yacht, as well as larger than ever before.

The completely renewed hull design measures almost 110 feet in overall length, with a beam larger than 11 feet. The exterior design further builds on the flowing lines of the 100′ Corsaro . Characterized by a super sporty profile, the Riva 110’ exhibits a large window in the hull with integrated porthole and, on deck, a long glass ceiling that stretches along the entire living room and it is formed by glass framed in stainless steel. The aft is equipped with the innovative Submersible Hatch, the exclusive movement system that Ferretti Group has patented, which has already convinced experts and triumphed during the Boat Builder Awards 2016 in Amsterdam.

Under way, the 110 Dolcevita is nothing short of majestic. Think of a Bentley on water and you have some idea what it feels like to cruise aboard this fabulous yacht. At a cruising speed of 23 knots she is supremely smooth and exceptionally quiet, with a range of well over 400nm. Should you need to get somewhere in a hurry, top speed is 26 knots (30mph).

A stunningly elegant and stylish interior is only to be expected when the object in question is a Riva superyacht. The interior of the Riva 110 Dolcevita is indeed breathtakingly beautiful. Ahead of the fabulous saloon on the main deck is a magnificent and very private owner’s suite, stretching right across the boat, with a wonderful outlook through huge windows down both sides. On the lower deck are 4 almost identical double guest suites, plus a separate, self-contained living and working area for a crew of 5.

The 110 Dolcevita is certainly a object of rare beauty, but Riva design is never just for show, it is always just as practical as it is beautiful. So it’s no surprise that the outdoor spaces on the 110 are an absolute delight. On top, is a huge, lavishly-appointed, split-level flybridge, with the forward section shaded by a substantial hardtop. On the aft deck is a magnificent al fresco dining area, and on the foredeck is an area almost as large with a huge sofa

The 110’ Dolcevita comes complete with a hot tub, lots of lounging area space and a number of al fresco dining spots. Featuring a bow lounge, an extensive flybridge as well as a large swim platform just a few steps away from the large cockpit, the yacht offers plenty of exterior spaces. 

The main salon features a refined design, with a large salon and a formal dining area. The crew can access directly from the galley, allowing the utmost level of service. 

She can accommodate ten guests in five cabins, including a master suite, two double cabins and two convertible cabins.

VIVA Yacht – Incredible $175 Million Superyacht

VIVA yacht is a masterpiece built by the renowned Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects , a Netherlands-based yacht designer, in their Kaag shipyard.

She was built in 2021 and is considered one of the largest motor yachts in the world that can accommodate up to 14 guests in luxurious comfort and 18 crew for excellent service. 

This majestic 308-foot superyacht is considered to be the first in a line of future luxury yachts that also focus on significantly reducing its carbon footprint by running on diesel-electric power.

According to the AIS data , she is currently sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands.

The VIVA yacht is a luxury yacht with an emphasis on environmentalism. Her design was penned by Peter Marino featuring “great edifices” of glass, including floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for natural light and ventilation throughout the interior spaces.

Marino’s theme for this superyacht is an open beach house style with a touch of minimalism clearly shown in the design’s abundance of clean lines.

The VIVA yacht is a stunning 94-meter-long luxury yacht with an incredible 13.6m beam and a volume of 2999 gross tonnage, making it one of the largest yachts in its class.

Her water tanks can store around 71,000 liters of fresh water that the guests can use. 

The yacht is powered by twin MTU engines with a maximum speed of 20 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots, and a range that extends over 5k nautical miles. She is also equipped with at-anchor stabilizers to provide exceptional comfort levels. 

She is hailed as the most environmentally-friendly luxury vessel of its kind because of her eco-friendly waste treatment plant and heat recovery systems on board. 

She has been installed with an exceptionally advanced hybrid propulsion system to keep the environmental impact at around the same levels as his previous Feadship, despite that being 32 meters shorter in length.

Her price is $175 million and her annual running cost is at around US$ 17.5 million yearly. She is currently not believed to be for sale nor available for private charter.

As a private yacht, little is known about her owner who is a billionaire and features his initials on the helicopter register N702FF.

VIVA: The $250 Million Superyacht Of UFC Owner Frank Fertitta III

From his current position as CEO of Station Casinos to how he – alongside brother Lorenzo and childhood friend Dana White – transformed the UFC into a multi-billion-dollar promotion , there’s virtually endless information about how Frank Fertitta III made his fortune. How he chooses to spend said fortune, however, is a little more mysterious (at least for the fun stuff). One such indulgence we know the elder Fertitta brother has treated himself to is the ultra-luxurious Feadship-built superyacht known as Viva, which comes with an eye-watering price tag of US$175 million / AU$252 million.

Conceptualised by Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture in collaboration with De Voogt Naval Architects, while also showcasing interiors accomplished by Peter Marino, Viva was only completed in the Netherlands last year and delivered shortly thereafter.

If you’ve arrived or departed from the island by boat over the past few days, you couldn’t have missed the gargantuan visitor lurking just offshore.

The 308-foot superyacht Viva was moored off Nantucket earlier this week, just outside the jetties, as the massive vessel was too large to navigate into the harbor. It departed for Martha's Vineyard Wednesday night.

The $175 million Viva, which was built by Feadship in the Netherlands and completed just last year, features its own helicopter which has been spotted circling around the island this week. It is the 85th largest superyacht in the world, and is believed to be owned by billionaire Frank Fertitta III , the CEO of Station Casinos in Las Vegas and founder of Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The yacht’s helicopter sports the tail number N702FF, which was believed to have been chosen for Fertitta’s initials.

"That's definitely one of the biggest vessels I've seen around Nantucket in my 20 years here," Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said on Wednesday.

The yacht has been called the “most environmental-friendly luxury vessel of its kind” as it features a hybrid propulsion system that allows the boat to travel at 12 knots under diesel-electric power, as well as a waste treatment plant and heat recovering systems on board. Its annual running costs are reported to be in excess of $17.5 million .

Viva has a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. Among its many amenities are a cinema, a beauty salon, a gym, and, of course, a helipad on the upper deck.

Dmitry Korchak (born February 19, 1979 in Elektrostal/Moscow Oblast) is a Russian tenor and conductor.

Korchak received his musical education at the Moscow Choral Academy. In 2004 he won prizes at the “Francisco Viñas” International Singing Competition in Barcelona and at the Plácido Domingo Operalia International Competition in Los Angeles.

As a singer he has appeared at La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, the Paris Opera Bastille, London’s Covent Garden and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has collaborated with artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Plácido Domingo, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta and Kent Nagano.

From 2017 to 2020, Dmitry Korchak was Principal Guest Conductor at the Novosibirsk Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, where he directed his own festival, and Guest Conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.

Korchak has made several guest appearances at the Kissinger Sommer, the Salzburg Festival and the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, where he also worked as a conductor. Korchak also worked with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

 “Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
