Boat: Pacific Dolphin 1978, 28'
this age is likely quite different from any other surviving one. This is my first , so take everything I say with a pinch of .

Despite having very worn out old , I'm still able to sail up closely into the and make good headway - even in the boisterous conditions often found in Monterey Bay. Sailing into waves and swell is not too exciting - she holds her course well and doesn't bounce around too much. Sailing with the and with swell coming from the aft quarters can be a bit too exciting for me - she really starts rolling around and needs a lot of to keep on course. Going up to the to handle the main sail is very unpleasant in those conditions - you're going to want to clip on.

There have been plenty of to deal with - mostly old portholes and some stanchions needing reseating. Forehatch like a sieve around some custom glass someone had installed in it, currently glassing over that. Main rotted through and had termite damage, replacing that. Standing was new in 2019 (before me) and the chain plates still appear solid. to joint is unfortunately screwed on (not bolted and backed), with some intrusion over the years - can't currently detect any.

My planned future projects to ease solo handling, in priority order:
- clean and lubricate the sail track so I don't have to pull the main down
- 2' shorter (I'm not just enjoying) for better visibility forward to avoid those crab pots
- lazy jacks
- setup line reefing
- run lines back to through blocks and fairleads (going to need to get made up to spread the load better over the deck)

The forward V-berth is comfortable for 2 adults, though tricky to get in and out of. I think that's because the was lowered with a custom mahogany job which gained but reduced space (this is a pain, as it means the is too shallow for ANY , and also makes it incredibly difficult to run any or hosing.

The chart table lowers and folds out to turn the settee into another double berth, which works for my two young , or 1 adult. The quarter berth is currently sail , but am going to need to turn that back into a berth as the grow up.

the boat and I've been working on it for nearly a year now. It has been quite the but I have learned a lot. I hope to put her back in the in the this summer and start long-term sailing.
Mine is number 5, built in 1977.

I'd love to exchange some more info with you about our . So far I've only found one other person with a sister boat, but his is a Yankee built boat, so a few differences.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  1. YANKEE 28

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

Don't confuse the Yankee 30 with the 28. The 30 is an Olin Stephens design and is one of the best boats built in its day. The 28 was designed to mimic the 30 but was not designed by S&S. I don't even know who did it. The Yankee boat works were only is business for about 5 years and all the boats were very limited production.
