THE MARINE TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCE　Proven by adventure

Historically, the Danish people are well known for their sailing prowess and talent for boatbuilding. In the southern Jutland town of Haderslev, X-Yachts and Yanmar are helping keep this tradition very much alive.

“We are surrounded by so much water and therefore have a strong history of sailing,” says Kræn Brinck Nielsen, CEO of X-Yachts. Kræn grew up sailing dingies and excelled enough to represent his country. Later, he was offered his dream job at the helm of this local shipyard that has built its reputation as the best in performance yacht design and construction.

“It was an easy choice – I’ve known this company since I was eight years old and have sailed X-Yachts my whole career,” he adds. “Having something you are passionate about in your backyard was almost too good to be true.”

Reasons to celebrate

2019 is a special anniversary year for X-Yachts, as the company is celebrating 40 years in the business. Kræn attributes X-Yachts’ longevity to several factors, not least of which is the dedication of its staff.

“We have a long tenure with the employees, because they’re passionate about what they do. We’ve had the same designer right from the beginning. The first-ever sailboat produced by X-Yachts in 1979 is also back at the yard and undergoing a total makeover in time for our 40th anniversary celebrations.”

Interestingly, co-founder Birger Hansen is also still employed by the company and is showing no signs of slowing down – even at 70 years old. He is restoring the aforementioned, original X79 hull #1. This historic vessel will be exhibited at the ‘Gold Cup’, where the Haderslev harbour will be full of X-Yachts spanning the past four decades, with owners and enthusiasts enjoying this celebratory regatta.

Community spirit

Since that original X79, the company has delivered approximately 6,000 sailboats worldwide. Its 250 employees currently hand over around 75 boats a year to customers. Many of them come to the shipyard to see where their dreams have literally taken shape in the capable hands of the skilled workforce.

“Some of the stories are amazing, especially as these are dreams that people have had for many years,” enthuses Kræn. “We recently supplied a Danish customer with an X43. He sold his company, his wife left her job and they took their kids out of school. And now we’re following them in the Caribbean as they live out their dreams at sea.

“Then there are the three Maltese guys – aged 69, 71 and 73 – who spent seven years deciding to buy an XC45. They stepped on board and their next stop was Valetta, 3,000 nautical miles away.

“Another favourite are the Americans who were planning on getting a boat when they retired but decided instead to get the boat in their 50s, live on it and keep working. They purchased the boat five years ahead of schedule – simply by changing their way of thinking.

“We follow everyone’s experiences online and it’s a great way to keep in contact with our customers. Our community and ambassadors around the world are major drivers for further success.”

Positive customer testimonials are as important as the superior sailing pleasure that this world-famous brand is renowned for. Each boat is unique, but one uniting factor is that the hearts of the boats are powered by Yanmar’s series of common-rail marine diesel engines .

Partners in performance

“We want our boats to be a safe choice and the times when you need the engine, you want it to be reliable, like entering a harbour in heavy seas,” explains Kræn. “It’s vital your yacht can be serviced around the world. If my customer picks up a boat in Denmark and ends up in the Caribbean, he expects the same levels of service.

“Our customers typically sail their boats short-handed, so ease of use is paramount. This is especially true when it comes to easy sail handing, operating electrical winches, bow and stern thrusters, and so on. We need to offer them a reliable product in terms of use and support – our customers expect that.”

Yanmar’s famous reliability also extends out of the water, in its role as a trusted and valued supplier to boat builders, such as X-Yachts.

“We create moulds, build a hull and need the engines to be delivered on exactly the right date to fit our production schedules,” adds Kræn. “Having a supplier you can rely on to help facilitate that process is a ‘must’ to be successful in this industry.”

Judging by the full order book and huge extension being built at the Haderslev yard, the employees will no doubt soon start thinking about plans for the 50th anniversary celebrations, due in 2029.

Nava’s danish expedition: x-yachts dealer meeting.

In the picturesque city of Haderslev, Denmark, the X-Yachts factory recently hosted a dynamic international dealer meeting from 1st to 3rd November 2023. As proud partners and X-Yachts dealers in Croatia, we had the privilege to be a part of this event. The meeting was highly informative but also a celebration of craftsmanship and innovation.

The first day in the factory showroom was exciting. We met new dealers and key factory personnel. The impressive production ability of the facility, has reached a remarkable number of 80 boats annually. Amidst this, the unveiling of the latest Xc model, the Xc47, added a touch of thrill to the day.

On day two, our team engaged in workshops with North Sails, gaining valuable insights into sail technology. A behind-the-scenes factory tour showcased the meticulous production process. The highlight of the day was the live exploration of the Xc47 model in the showroom. Our team was amazed by the production precision, thoughtful design, and the flawless gelcoat.

On day three, we tested the X-Power 33c motor. In short, it’s a testament to affordability without compromise on quality. Its sharp design, akin to renowned brands, together with a flawless interior, positions it as the ideal companion for day trips, accommodating up to 12 passengers.

Day 4 and 5

The grand finale unfolded at the In-House Boat Show, where boat enthusiasts and potential clients joined the event. An impressive X-Yachts fleet, including Xc47 , X4 0 , X4 3 , Xp44 , X5 6 , and X-Power 33c , painted a vivid picture of nautical excellence. The boat show was an excellent platform to meet boat owners who are based in Croatia. Moreover, we were able to also engage with potential clients interested in testing and renting these exceptional vessels, as well as, to offer our charter management program.

Beyond the boats, the X-Living shop offered an array of products, from essentials for boats and homes to stylish and functional Musta clothing. The presence of industry giants such as Raymarine, NorthSails, Harken, Garmin, B&G, FurlerBoom, Elvstrom Sails, Yanmar, and others added to the vibrant atmosphere.

Notably, the X-Yachts showroom stands out, offering a year-round open invitation for clients and owners to witness the craftsmanship firsthand. The nearby sea-front with pontoons is an interesting spectacle, when boats are being meticulously tested before reaching the eager hands of customers.

Now we are even more sure of further success of X-Yachts in Croatia and we, at Nautika Centar Nava, are looking forward to charting new waters together.

XYOA X-Yachts Factory Visit 2023

On the afternoon Tuesday 21 March 2023, 41 X-Yacht owners and their wives/partners checked-in at London Heathrow to fly to Billund, Denmark.  Despite the 2 hour delay in taking-off, it was an enthusiastic and happy bunch of travellers who were each met individually at Billund Airport by Torben and Lotte of X-Yachts Denmark.

A luxury coach was waiting outside the airport, and we were soon in the comfortable Harmonien Hotel in Haderslev where we were joined by a few other owners who had travelled by other means. 

Whilst most owners were from the UK, it was joy to meet three who had traveled from Canada and two from Switzerland.  Despite the lateness of the evening, X-Yachts had organised for the hotel to provide very tasty food and ample drinks.

After a hearty breakfast on Wednesday and a damp walk to the X-Yachts factory, we were entertained by some superb presentations in the showroom:

Kraen Brink Nielson, CEO, gave a warm welcoming speech and a brief history of X-Yachts.

Torben Kornum, Global Market Development Manager, welcomed everyone and outlined the nature of the presentations to follow.

Birger Hansen, one of the founders, talked about the very first X-Yacht, X-79 and more fascinating, his love of building outrageous and powerful motor bikes.

Thomas Mielec, Director of Design & Engineering, spoke about the philosophy and process of  X-Yachts design and the design of the latest X-Yacht, Xc47.

Lotte Bodilsen, gave an interesting talk on Danish design and its incorporation into X-Yachts’ design philosophy

After an enjoyable smorgasbord lunch, owners were taken on a tour of the factory and saw in particular, an X5.6’s nearly complete hull and in a separate building, its deck.  These were shortly to be bonded together.  All were impressed with the quality of workmanship on the X-Yachts and the clean and orderly layout of the factory.

That evening a spectacular dinner in the candle and fairy-lit decorated showroom was enjoyed by all.  Kraen and Torben welcomed the guests, and later Max Hubbard thanked X-yachts for their interesting and generous visit to X-Yachts headquarters. Only too evident was the “family” atmosphere of owners of different nationalities enjoying the company and camaraderie of the designers and builders of their favourite yachts.  Sadly it was a wet walk back to the Harmonien Hotel.

On Thursday, 23 March, owners visited the factory again to see the mock-up of the new Xc47 and other completed yachts in the showroom and the factory.  Many took the opportunity to visit a recently completed X5.6 in the marina and were suitably impressed even if their bank balance was not even sufficient to pay the deposit.  Later Dan Pedersen, multiple world sailing champion, and Torsten Bastiansen, Export Sales & Project Coordinator, gave a brilliant presentation on rigging. 

Meanwhile many of the wives/partners had visited the Danish furniture house, Ingvard Christensen in Vejle to better appreciate Danish design, but luckily none took the opportunity to purchase any of the wonderful items for sale.  Also visited were two outstanding houses/apartments of Danish design.

In the afternoon, owners and wives were eventually united at the factory whilst enjoying tea/coffee and delicious cake before retuning by coach to Billund airport.

It would be boring to explain how the party then spent a further two days waiting at the airport or in adjacent hotels for an airworthy aircraft to take them home.  However that did not distract from a most enjoyable and interesting visit to the home of our wonderful X-Yachts.

X- Yachts of Denmark

X-Yachts was founded by brothers Niels and Lars Jeppesen with Birger Hansen, in Haderslev, Denmark. Since then it has produced around 5,000 yachts.

Their first model was the 7.9-metre (26 ft) X-79, which was launched in May 1979.

An X-79 won what was then the biggest yacht race in the world, the Sjælland Rundt, with almost 2,100 yachts competing. The X-79 went on to become a one-design class with almost 500 boats built throughout the 190s.

In 1981 the X-102 was designed to race under the Three-Quarter-tonner Rule. X-102s won the Three-Quarter Ton Cup in Finland in 1981 (Soldier Blue) and in 1982, in Spain (Lille Du). A ‘Sport’ version of the X-102 was called the X-3/4 Ton and won the Three Quarter Ton Cup in 1985 (Sweden), 1987 (Holland), Italy (1988) and Greece (1989).[4]

Throughout the 1980s X-Yachts built many designs to Ton and IOR Rules, also winning the One Ton Cup in 1986 in Spain (Andelsbanken), x-402 and in Sweden (Okyalos, 1990).

In 1985 the X-99 was launched, which became an ISAF-recognized one-design, with 605 boats built.[5]

Seven of the top ten finishers of the 1987 Sjælland Rundt were X-Yachts.[6]

In 1990 X-Yachts based on the sucess with x-402 range, launched a Performance Cruiser range, beginning with the X-412 and X-382

Facts , story, results

Niels Jeppesen co- founder and CEO of x-yachts of Denmark, have given us some inputs for the x-402 class, its construction, its preformance and not least being the first large construction from x-yacht in Denmark, the x-402 set a new corner stone for the trade mark of high preformance racer/ cruiser that we all are familiar with.

Niels explains that the x-402 constrcution was the first large mass produced 40 feet boat in Denmark, back in 1985/86-

Based o nthe sucess made in the one ton cup result.s during 1984-86, the main markets were out side Denmark for the boat.. Especially in Holland, UK,  Italy and Spain were big markets for the x-402.

Also Germany with 4 boats placed on both side of Bodensee. dedicated for many years for racing on the lake, made the preformance and reputation of the x-402, well know in the yacting universe.
