English Yacht Surveyor working in Gouvia Marine Corfu

Gouvia Marina, the first privately owned marina in Greece, is situated in Corfu, about 6 kilometres from the town of Corfu and 7 kilometres from the International Airport. For many years seamen considered the harbour and the bay of Gouvia a natural link between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Sea as well as a port of call, where they could sail in, to repose, enjoying the climate and the beauties of the island.

The marina has a mooring capacity of 1,235 yachts, on both permanent and floating pontoons while there are also dry dock facilities for approximately 520 yachts. Gouvia Marina can gladly accommodate boats up to 80 m long and with 5,5 m draft. At all berths electricity is available (220V and 380V) as well as fresh water. In the 3.500 sq.m.of building facilities, a number of different services are available, such as commercial shops, car, motorbike and boat rental offices, restaurants, bars and cafe, Port police office, refuelling station, supermarket, and laundry.

The marina offers a full range of technical boat services and dry-docking facilities with two 75 and 65-ton travelifts and two 60 and 45-ton mobile cranes.

Clifford Blaylock is the owner and manager of Marine Surveying. I have lived and worked in Lefkada for the last eight years.

I owned a beautiful 22-meter wooded motor sailor called “Glaros” which is Greek for seagull for over 20 years. I rebuilt her, and maintain her myself which taught me a lot about wooden boats. “Glaros” was British registered and used to take charter parties around the Greek Ionian Islands, but because of Brexit she was no longer allowed to work in EU waters, and I decided to sell her.

For over 40 years, I worked offshore in the Oil and Gas industry as a commercial diver. A lot of the work I did was as a hyperbaric welder, welding pipelines at the bottom of the North Sea and other places around the world. I was involved in the salvage of the century when 5 tons of Russian gold was salvaged from the shipwreck HMS Edinburgh eight hundred and fifty feet down in the Barents Sea.

Why should I choose a BMSE surveyor?

BMSE surveyors have all passed the Practical boat surveying course, and through the BMSE private forum and BMSE meetings, the surveyors gain further experience and abilities throughout their careers. Cliff is an Affiliate member of IIMS, and he is continuing his professional development through the (CPD) program to maintain his knowledge base, standards, and competency levels. As part of membership, IIMS members are expected to achieve a minimum of 10 points earned over a one-year period from 1st January to 31st December each year. Cliff has the CPD-compliant roundel logo on his IIMS website listing. He is continuing his professional development for 2023.

The main Classifications Societies and professional bodies are YDSA (Yacht Designers & Surveyors Association), MCA (Marine Coastguard Agency) , ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) Bureau Veritas, RINA, Lloyds, RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and IIMS (International Institute of Marine Surveyors).

Williams & Smithells will assist your surveyor with yacht details, history, arrange access to the yacht and/or boat yard, book or liaise with the yard for lift out, hull wash and block if required. Most surveyors like to be left to get on with the survey and will report back to the buyer direct after survey and before the report is written up. WHY SURVEY A YACHT IN GREECE?

You should have a marine survey of any boat you are thinking of buying – motor or sailing boat -generally all but the smallest will need a pre-purchase survey or if you are buying a “project yacht”. Well qualified yacht surveyors have a mixture of experience, specialist training opportunities and the backing of a well established Professional Association. You will need a survey for insurance in due course so find out the condition before you buy. If you intend to register the boat, ask for the tonnage measurement to be done at the same time.

The marine surveyor may identify faults that the average boat owner will not be aware of, possibly using specialist equipment. Knowledge of faults and deterioration can assist the purchaser regarding associated rectification of defects or appropriate allowances.

10 shipwrecks dating from 3000 BC to the World War II era found off the coast of Greece

Researchers have discovered 10 shipwrecks , including one estimated to be more than 5,000 years old, off the coast of Greece, along with scattered ancient artifacts from around the globe.

Using Homer's "Iliad" as a guide, an underwater archaeological team made the discoveries during a four-year survey off the coast of Kasos, a small island in the Aegean Sea, the Greek Ministry of Culture announced  Wednesday.

During the underwater missions, teams found the remains of 10 doomed ships, spanning thousands of years of history —  with the oldest one dating back to 3000 BC.

The ships sank during different eras, including the Classical period (460 BC), the Hellenistic period (100 BC to 100 AD), the Roman years (200 BC - 300 AD) and the Byzantine period (800 - 900 AD). The team also found the remains of a more recent vessel — a World War II-era ship made of wood that was almost 100 feet long.

Near the wrecks, the ministry said researchers also discovered a trove of "unique finds" originating from Spain, Italy, Africa and Asia Minor, including a Spanish amphora with a seal on its handle dating from between 150-170 AD.

Also discovered were drinking vessels, terra sigillata flasks from Africa and a stone anchor from the Archaic period, which lasted from the 8th century BC until the 5th century BC. A photo of the anchor was among six images from the survey released by the culture ministry.

All the shipwrecks and sunken treasures were found at depths of between 65 and 155 feet. From 2019 to 2023, researchers took more than 20,000 underwater photos and employed a side-scanning sonar to map the Kasos-Karpathos reef for the first time.

Centuries ago, Kasos served as a major trade hub east of Crete and, according to Homer's "Iliad," played a role in the Trojan War. Officials said researchers who surveyed the waters off the island actually used the Iliad and other historical sources to study the area.

"It is the first systematic research on the seabed of Kasos with the main objective of locating, recording and studying the antiquities of an area at the crossroads of cultures and once a center of navigation," according to the survey's website , which includes a 12-minute video  chronicling the underwater missions.

The team of international researchers includes diving archaeologists, historians, architects, geologists, postgraduate students and other specialists.

The announcement of the shipwrecks came just a few months after scientists found a partially submerged building, as well as a variety of ancient marble treasures, while exploring Salamis, a small island off the coast of Greece where a now-sunken city once stood.
