What our travelers say

Origin & Theory Galapagos Cruise

Origin & Theory Galápagos Cruise

Two twin ships operating some of the best itineraries- in uncomparable style, a galápagos cruise on board the origin & theory.

Origin & Theory Galapagos Cruise

  • Two twin ships operating side by side
  • Sustainable luxury
  • Wonderful amenities

The Origin and Theory are two of the newest boats in the Galápagos cruise fleet. Built in 2016 and 2017, they travel as twin ships - one next to the other. Both have been designed to be as environmentally conscious as possible, and were constructed using zero-emissions materials. The operators are no strangers to sustainability - they were the first to be awarded the flagship SmartVoyager environmental certification, which they have held since 2000.

However, the Origin and Theory have no hint of the austerity sometimes associated with environmentally friendly vessels, and your amazing voyage of discovery around the Galápagos will also be one of luxury.

Stunning accommodation There are ten luxury staterooms on each ship, and all feature large panoramic windows for unparalleled views. Sumptuous touches included the finest linens, memory foam and soft pillows to suit all tastes, and twin beds that easily convert to a single King bed.

Measuring a generous 145 sq ft, each cabin on board the Origin and Theory Galápagos Cruise has individual climate control, and ample closet space, including a personal safe. The en-suite luxury bathrooms feature plush towels and bathrobes with slippers, and a delightful "rainfall" shower with its own ocean view! A hair dryer and luxury range of biodegradable cosmetics are also provided.

Unique in the fleet, every stateroom on the Origin and Theory features an Apple TV with a pre-loaded movie selection, a universal docking station for your mobile devices, and a personal Espresso machine and tea kettle.

Stunning amenities As befits a luxury experience, the public areas of the Origin and Theory are no less splendid. Unlike other vessels of this size, the Origin and Theory has its own dedicated fitness room with cardio equipment, weights and yoga mats.

There are several areas perfect for lounging, with comfortable seats and cozy decor. There is a comfortable library filled with books about the Galápagos, and about Charles Darwin - whose work "On the Origin of Species" clearly inspired the vessels' names.

Outdoor accommodation is wonderful, and includes a large sun deck with chaise lounges, daybeds, chairs and hammocks, a shower, wet bar, BBQ and tables for al fresco dining.

The food is stunning, and consists of international cuisine as well as gourmet Ecuadorian and Peruvian specialties. The chefs are also pleased to give cooking demonstrations on any of their recipes! Complimentary house wines and beers are poured during dinner, and there is a generous open bar policy excluding premium brands. Origin and Theory have raised the bar for what "all-inclusive" means in a Galápagos cruise.

Stunning wildlife itineraries The Origin and Theory operate two alternating 8 day/7 night itineraries together. These can be combined into one absolutely amazing 15 day trip with no repeated excursions - the ultimate exploration of the Galápagos.

One itinerary features the southern and central islands, the other visits the northern and western islands. Each ship carries two highly qualified, bilingual naturalist guides each, meaning the 40 guests on board each ship are split into four groups à 10 passengers. This will let you enjoy much lower guest-to-guide ratio than almost every other boat in the fleet! As well as visits to the stunning islands and their unique habitats and wildlife, the guides will lead you in other activities including swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and stand up paddle-boarding - all included with your cruise.

Our comment Stunning. We used that word a lot up there, but it's the only one we think justifies a Galápagos cruise on board the twin ships Origin and Theory. The ships are amazing, the crews go out of their way to ensure your happiness, the food is first class, and the encounters with Galápagos wildlife you will have will make memories that last a lifetime. For those who are conscious of their environmental impact, the Origin and Theory are among the greenest vessels in the Galápagos fleet, and yet they also among the most luxurious. Origin and Theory prove that sustainable tourism can still be luxurious.

Food & Drinks on board the Origin & Theory

The food on our Galapágos Cruises is among the very best you will find in South America. Most of the on-board chefs are internationally trained and have prior experience working in the best hotels and restaurants in Ecuador and indeed around the world.

You can expect a first-class selection of food, including a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced poultry and fish/seafood, rice and pasta dishes. Most boats will always include some typical Ecuadorian dishes on the menu during your cruise. If you have specific dietary requirements then these can usually be accommodated by the chef providing you have given advance notice. Please make sure you tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements you have at the time you book with us. If you leave it until you arrive at the dockside, then it may well be impossible to accommodate your needs.

Most boats serve a range of options at meal times in a relaxed buffet-style. At the first class and luxury end of the market, some boats have more formal dining where you will be served at your seat. However the atmosphere is always relaxed on board our cruises, and never stuffy or formal.

At Galapatours we love and respect the pristine ecosystems and fascinating wildlife of the Galápagos Islands, and we insist that our cruise partners do too. To protect the archipelago all our cruise vessels must have sophisticated water filtration systems, modern efficient engines, and strict maintenance schedules to minimize pollution.

The Galápagos National Park authority also defines exact cruising routes that dictate which ships can visit highlights at specific times, as well as limiting passenger numbers. These measures ensure that animals and habitats are not disturbed by too many visitors.

But at Galapatours we like to go even further. We voluntarily offset all the CO2 emissions of every cruise we sell - at no cost to you. And you can also play your part by traveling responsibly and following our Eco Guidelines during your stay. Click here to find out more about these guidelines, our commitment to sustainable tourism, and the Galápagos National Park rules.

Grand Majestic Galapagos Cruise

Grand Majestic

Designed and built in the USA in 2018, Grand Majestic is being hailed as the first MegaYacht in the Galápagos fleet. Constructed to the same exacting specifications as the best private luxury yachts in the world, Grand Majestic also has another trick up her sleeve – at 25kts, she's the fastest vessel in the Galápagos cruise fleet. That means you can spend more time experiencing what the Galápagos has to offer and less time traveling between visitor sites. All this while enjoying the highest standards of luxury and service. With only 8 cabins in total, there are superb levels of space, light and luxury. Most cabins features panoramic windows for unparalleled views of the islands. Each has been luxuriously decorated with designer fabrics and the highest quality fittings. Stunning bathrooms, climate control, luxury linens and the finest toiletries are just a few of the amenities enjoyed by all cabins. The grand master suite boasts an enormous 400 square feet of space, and is the perfect choice for that very special "trip of a lifetime". Communal spaces onboard are no less spectacular. Our favorite is the luxurious al fresco dining area up on the sundeck, offering absolutely stunning views as you enjoy the finest Ecuadorian and international cuisine and wines. The main deck houses the indoor dining area, extensively stocked bar, and a wonderfully comfortable saloon area featuring a stunning communal leather sofa. This is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing drink before dinner after your day's adventures, or to listen to your naturalist guide brief you about the wonders in store for you on your next excursion. Another standout feature is the large jacuzzi hot tub on the sundeck. It's a remarkable place to enjoy the equatorial night sky as the stars come out on a warm evening. If you would like to charter Grand Majestic for your own private use, we are able to facilitate this. Please speak to one of our Galápagos experts, and we can arrange this VIP service on your behalf. Grand Majestic is operated by Galápagos veterans, and they have put all their skills and experience to use in designing superb itineraries that allow you to see almost everything the Galápagos has to offer. As well as standout 8-day cruises, Grand Majestic can also cater for those with less time available in the Galápagos but who still wish to see as much as possible. Special 4- and 5-day itineraries are available. Excursions include wet and dry landings at some of the most stunning spots in the islands, as well as plenty of opportunity for snorkeling with exotic creatures like marine iguanas, Galápagos sharks and the friendly Galápagos Sea Lions. Of course, top of the range snorkeling equipment is available for you on a complimentary basis. Her bilingual naturalist guides are the among the best in the Galápagos, and they will enhance your visit with their in-depth knowledge of the islands' flora and fauna, as well as their expertise in locating the iconic species that can't be found anywhere else. With her speed, Grand Majestic allows you to enjoy more "contact time" with the Galápagos than any other vessel in the fleet. The fact that this speed is accompanied by standards of luxury never before seen in a boat of this type means that a Galápagos cruise on the Grand Majestic is an experience you will always remember. We have been working with the operator of this ship for many years, and we know they have poured heart and soul into Grand Majestic to bring you the best Galápagos cruise you can experience.

infinity

The luxury yacht constructed in 2018 is a testament to the pinnacle of purpose-built vessels, with its modern design and luxurious features making it the epitome of sophistication. Infinity has been crafted to offer unparalleled luxury while being environmentally friendly, and to provide a safe and secure experience for guests throughout their journey. It has been designed to exceed international maritime safety standards and offer opulent accommodations that perfectly complement the stunning views from the private balconies. One of the unique aspects of Infinity is its impressive capacity, which can accommodate up to 20 passengers. This is unusual for Galápagos vessels, as most are limited to 16 guests due to the maximum number of people that can accompany a Galápagos naturalist guide inside the National Park. Infinity has redefined the rule book by offering two naturalist guides, resulting in a more intimate and personalized experience with a smaller group of only 10 guests. This allows for a closer encounter with the remarkable Galápagos creatures and ample time to learn about the fascinating islands from the bilingual guides. In addition to kayaks and snorkeling gear, Infinity also features pangas and other facilities to enhance your enjoyment on board. The yacht offers a range of itineraries, including 8-, 5-, and 4-day options that visit some of the more remote islands that other cruise vessels may not, such as the incredible [Genovesa](//galapatours.com/destinations/genovesa "Galápagos Genovesa Island") and [Fernandina](//galapatours.com/destinations/fernandina "Fernandina Galápagos Island"). The yacht has been designed to offer ample space for socializing, fine dining, and relaxing with a cocktail, making for a truly special and unforgettable experience. The vessel boasts inside and al fresco dining, an al fresco bar, and a sun deck with breathtaking views and a jacuzzi. The cabins on Infinity are designed to provide a truly luxurious experience, with panoramic windows leading to private balconies and private en suite bathrooms that are beautifully finished. All rooms feature flat screen TVs, and there are two suites available that offer a spacious living room area and floor-to-ceiling glass panels leading to large private balconies. Fine dining on Infinity is a true luxury experience, with some of the best South American and Old World wines, a wide range of premium drinks, and complimentary filtered water, soft drinks, tea, and coffee available at any time. Food on board is restaurant quality, and guests can enjoy sumptuous meals in the spacious dining area or a relaxed lunch or barbecue on the al fresco dining porch. Infinity is equipped with the latest technology and safety features, making it one of the most comfortable and luxurious vessels in the Galápagos. This remarkable ship is perfect for those seeking an intimate exploration of the wonders of the Galápagos Islands in unparalleled style and luxury, and it is certain to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will be treasured forever.

Ecoventura MV ORIGIN Galapagos Review

Review of ecoventura mv origin galapagos.

The 2016-built MV ORIGIN is the first of all three identical ultra-luxury superyachts operated by Ecoventura Galapagos. The boat's sisterships are the same-designed MV THEORY (2019) and MV EVOLVE (2023). Ecoventura used to operate also the 1994-built MV Letty (IMO 8978942).

MV ORIGIN vessel (IMO number 9802190) is currently Ecuador- flagged (MMSI 735059381) and registered in Guayaquil .

In order to make the three fleetmates absolutely identical (by design and amenities), in 2022 Ecoventura conducted two drydock refit and refurbishment projects (for the boats ORIGIN and THEORY). MV THEORY's Jacuzzi (originally positioned on Darwin Deck/deck 3, behind the Wheelhouse) was relocated to the Sun Deck. MV ORIGIN's Deck 3 layout (behind the Wheelhouse) was also modified to be identical to THEORY's and EVOLVE's layouts.

Ecoventura Company (history and ownership)

The shipowner is Servicios Internacionales Turisticos Situr SA (Samborondon Ecuador-based) and the company operates its boutique luxury ships under the subsidiary and travel brand Ecoventura Galapagos. Situr SA was founded in 1980 (incorporated in February) and currently has 22 employees. Situr's headquarters are in Samborondon, near Guayaquil (Ecuador's largest city and principal seaport).

MV ORIGIN yacht (Ecoventura Galapagos)

Ecoventura's Founder, CEO and President is Santiago Dunn. The family-operated company was founded in 1991 and also has a sales office in the USA ( Miami Florida ). Since 2022, Santiago Dunn is also A&K South America's CEO.

In late-December 2022, the USA-based A&K Travel Group Ltd (the parent company of Abercrombie & Kent) signed an equity partnership agreement with Ecoventura SA, thus making the small Galapagos company part of A&K Travel Group. In 2022, A&K also acquired Crystal Cruises (previously owned by the 2022-bankrupted GHK/Genting Hong Kong). In 2019, A&K acquired Cox & Kings Travel Ltd (UK-based luxury operator part of Cox & Kings Ltd) via A&K's subsidiary C&K Luxury Travel Ltd. Cox & Kings Ltd is a 1758-founded (as an army agency, cargo/insurance/travel agency, shipowner, bank and publishing house) Indian luxury travel company ( Mumbai -headquartered) that in 2020 declared bankruptcy. Cox & Kings now operates in 22 countries, specializes in leisure travel and package vacations and has fully-owned subsidiaries in North America (USA and Canada), Europe (UK, Netherlands), Asia (UAE, Japan, Singapore), Australia and New Zealand.

In 2009, Ecoventura received two prestigious global travel industry awards - Conde Nast Traveler's "World's Savers Award" and Travel+Leisure's "Global Vision Award for Green Cruising".

The company is a devoted supporter of CDF-Charles Darwin Foundation (1959-founded nonprofit organization) headquartered at CDRS-Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island). The 2006-established Galapagos Marine Biodiversity Fund is a partnership between Ecoventura and WWF (World Wildlife Fund for Nature Inc/1961-founded non-governmental organization specializing in wilderness preservation). The 2017-established GBESF (Galapagos Biodiversity & Education for Sustainability Fund) is a partnership between Ecoventura, CDF and GANP-Galapagos National Park.

In October 2022, Ecoventura signed a partnership with Avianca Airlines (Colombia's biggest airline and the country's flag carrier) to develop a recycling center in the Galapagos to ensure that all waste from the islands is transferred to the mainland.

Ecoventura is a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux Association (1954-established) that currently groups 580+ companies (in 68 countries) that manage individually owned luxury hotels and restaurants (chain hotels are not permitted to membership) in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Relais & Chateaux members are often renowned hoteliers, chefs and restaurateurs. Their properties are usually listed as historic landmarks (castles, manor houses/mansions, townhouses) and offer exquisite haute cuisine and high-end amenities. Ecoventura was granted membership of Relais & Chateaux for the brand's exceptional service, unique experiences and sustainability/environmental commitment (conservation efforts in the Galapagos).

MV ORIGIN yacht (Ecoventura Galapagos)

Most of Ecoventura's cruise customers are young couples and families, and often the superyachts are guested by celebrities and famous billionaires. The company offers the Galapagos' lowest guide-to-passenger ratio (1:10/one naturalist for every 10 tourists). Each yacht is served by 13 crew/staff, including one dedicated concierge and two guides.

Decks and Cabins

MV ORIGIN staterooms (a total of 10 passenger cabins) are all outside and located on Beagle Deck (main deck 2). All cabins provide luxury hotel amenities and unobstructed ocean views. Four pairs (8 cabins) are with interconnecting doors making them ideal for families.

All crew cabins (8 total) are on Finch Deck (lower deck 1).

The boat has 4 decks , of which 2 are with cabins (one for the crew, one for the passengers). All passenger cabins being on a single deck is rather unusual (especially for a Galapagos-based ship), as opposed to other ships (superyachts and even smaller boats) where guests' accommodations spread on two or three decks, and some are with small Portholes (round-shaped windows).

Cabin amenities include King-size double beds (convertible to twins/single beds, premium linens, duvets, 3 pillows per berth), leather headboards, bedside cabinets (with a drawer), wall-mounted reading lamps, hardwood flooring, 2-3 large windows (non-opening, with shades), a small corner table/writing desk (stool, binoculars, magnifying mirror, reusable water bottles), radio/alarm clock, TV, in-built sound system, mood lighting, individually controlled air conditioning.

Cabin bathrooms also have a large window (non-opening) allowing natural light directly into the shower cubicle. Cabin showers are with sliding glass doors, the WCs are wall-hung toilets. All toiletries are biodegradable and include soap, shampoo, conditioner. Premium bathrobes and sleepers are also provided.

Triple cabins additionally have a fold-away bed (concealed in the ceiling).

Landry service is provided complimentary.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

Ecoventura's newbuild yachts boast well-designed interiors (spacious public spaces and chic venues) and all-outside staterooms with contemporary furniture and premium hotel amenities. The boats are often privately chartered by small groups or affluent individuals to accommodate special events like parties, celebrations, business conferences.

Onboard venues and facilities include Bar Lounge, Dining Room, Library, Boutique Shop, Sauna Room, small Fitness (Gym Room equipped with 1x workout bench, 1x elliptical trainer, 1x exercise bike, free weights). The yacht has two Zodiacs (large-capacity RIBs/rigid inflatable boats stored forward on Deck 2) used for passenger transportation (ship-island-ship) and also for near-shore cruising tours. Each boat/group is led by a professional naturalist. Besides the Zodiac tours to the islands, Ecoventura also complimentary provides all tourists with snorkeling gear and sea kayaks. The cruise ship sails between the islands overnight.

Ecoventura Galapagos yacht (lounge bar)

Ecoventura's vacation travel experience features daily shore excursions (usually starting at dawn, after the buffet-style breakfast) as passengers are ferried via the Zodiacs to the island's landing point. The Zodiac landings are two types (depending on the island/destination) - wet (you must step into the water and wade to shore) and dry (you step from the boat directly to the rock). Around 3-4 hours are spent ashore at each site. In addition to the guided tours are complimentary offered activities like deepwater snorkeling (sometimes twice daily), beach swimming, kayaking, and boat rides.

Upon return to the yacht are offered snacks and fresh juices, leisure activities (swimming/snorkeling/kayaking near the ship or sunbathing/relaxing on the Sun Deck), follows BBQ lunch, and another set of land tours. Dinners (at ~7 pm) are served and with freshly prepared a-la-carte meals (including vegetarian and vegan dishes) prepared by the ship's chefs with the freshest (mainly locally sourced) ingredients and inspired by Relais & Chateaux.

The ship's top deck is a spacious sundeck/outdoor area for relaxation and sunbathing. The Sun Deck features a round Jacuzzi (bow-facing whirlpool bath) and is served by its own Bar (poolside wet bar with stools). Sun Deck's flooring is of premium teak and the furniture includes 4-seat tables, sofas, daybeds, padded lounge chairs, two hammocks.

Ecoventura Galapagos yacht (sundeck)

The MV ORIGIN yacht is equipped with 2x Zodiacs/RIBs (aka pangas), 1x glass-bottom boat, 5x tandem kayaks and 2x SUP boards (stand-up paddle boards/surfboards) which are provided to passengers free of charge during the entire voyage.

Onboard dining (all meals and beverages) are included in the Econventura's fares. The food is freshly prepared using only sustainably sourced meats and seafood. All snacks are complimentary and available at the Bar throughout the day. Ecoventura's Open-Bar policy provides complimentary beverages (wine by the glass, beers, spirits, cocktails, fresh juices, sodas, brand coffees and teas). Aslo included in the cruise tickets are the Wi-Fi Internet (shipwide coverage), kayaking and snorkeling equipment (masks, fins, snorkels), wet suits (available on a first-come-first-serve basis), Galapagos land transfers (airport-ship-airport) and all guided shore excursions/boat tours.

Not included in the cruise fares are the airfare and Galapagos park fees. Crew gratuities are recommended and ~US$35-50 per person per day (~US$250-350 per voyage). Onboard payments are usually made in cash (suggested). Crew gratuity could be also charged to credit cards (Visa or MasterCard). Gratuities are equally distributed among the ship's entire crew, including the tour guides.

Ecoventura's Open-Bridge policy allows passengers to visit the Wheelhouse (Navigation Bridge forward on Deck 3) and engage in conversation with the Captain and the officer on duty.

On Deck 1 are the crew quarters and the mess hall/dining room (midship), machinery rooms (aft) and the Gym and Sauna (forward).

WHY THIS TRIP

The Origin, Theory, and Evolve offer world-class service and amenities while saving fuel and treading gently on the earth.  The itineraries are carefully designed so you will experience the best of the Galapagos, while the inspired gourmet style menus, open bar policy, and sun deck and hot tub will keep you comfortable and happy.

TRIP DESCRIPTION

Ecoventura has a well-deserved reputation for offering quality trips while also being leaders in sustainable tourism.

They are dedicated to using tourism in the Galapagos as a means to protect the islands for perpetuity, and were among the first Galapagos companies to receive the Smart Voyager certification.

A trip on the Origin, Theory, or Evolve will be a top Galapagos luxury cruise experience, as the yachts have well thought out itineraries designed to allow passengers to really experience the best of the Galapagos Islands. They visit many of the more remote but less visited sites in the islands.

Additionally, the yachts have 20 passengers each so that there are 2 naturalists on board each boat, giving a guide to passenger ratio of 1:10 instead of the standard 1:16 on most other boats.

Menus have recently been updated to provide more fresh gourmet food, and dining will be a highlight of the trip. The yachts also have an open bar for local beers, wines, and liquors (premium drinks have additional cost).

The use of snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel), wetsuits, beach towels, kayaks  and even stand up paddle boards (SUPs) are all included in the cost of the cruise. Likewise mineral water, soda, juice, coffee and tea are available at no cost.

LOCAL OPERATOR: ECOVENTURA

The cruise ships are comfortable, eco-friendly and becoming friendlier in order to further reducing the company’s carbon footprint. The company supports environmental education and marine conservation projects in the Galápagos and Galápagos communities by employing locals, purchasing local supplies and sponsoring a local school and a nonprofit.

DAY 1: San Cristobal Airport & Cerro Tijeretas

Upon arrival to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island , the crew is waiting at the airport to escort you by bus to the main deck and then by zodiac to your yacht anchored in the bay. After the welcome briefing and safety drill, a delicious buffet lunch is served.

The group travels by bus to Cerro Tijeretas, or “Frigatebird Hill,” situated just outside town near La Predial. A fishing community from 1952 to 1960, La Predial is one of two sites where you can spot nesting colonies of both the Great and Magnificent species of frigate birds.

The trail leads to Playa Mann where you will witness beautiful scenery and vistas. The group returns to the yacht and departs at 3 p.m. to cruise around Leon Dormido aka Kicker Rock, a vertical tuff cone formation that rises abruptly nearly 500 feet from the ocean.

On the cliffs, you will spot blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies and Magnificent frigate birds. After joining your fellow yacht mates this evening for the island briefing, you will enjoy our captain’s welcome cocktail party and dinner prepared by our well-trained chefs.

Overnight:  On the yacht

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2: San Cristobal: Cerro Brujo & Punta Pitt

You arrive in Cerro Brujo , a breathtaking white coral beach considered one of the most spectacular in Galapagos and perfect for a peaceful walk. On the walk, you will enjoy expansive views and good bird watching. You can take an opportunity to snorkel or kayak from the beach or swim with sea lions as well as a Zodiac ride.

During lunch, the cruise heads toward the northeastern tip of San Cristobal Island to Punta Pitt , a tuff formation that serves as a nesting site for many sea birds including all three types of boobies: Blue-footed, Nazca and Red-footed boobies, both frigate species, swallow-tailed gulls, Storm petrels and a colony of sea lions.

Punta Pitt is considered a first-class site for birds and on par with Genovesa, or Tower, Island. You will return to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3: Espanola Island: Punta Suarez & Gardner Bay

You disembark at Punta Suarez on Espanola Island (Hood) , where you witness the highest rate of endemic species in Galapagos. Sea lions noisily greet our landing on their beach. Curious Hood mockingbirds peck at your shoelaces.

From April to December, the waved albatross, found only on Espanola, perform their wild mating ritual. Colonies of blue-footed boobies engage in “sky-pointing” to show off for potential mates.

Nazca boobies busily care for their young. Stunning swallow-tailed gulls are the only nocturnal gulls in the world and fish at night.

Red-billed tropicbirds take shelter under the cliffs. Also found here are Darwin’s finches, Galapagos doves and Galapagos hawks.

This is a great place to observe a unique species of marine iguana identified with traces of red and green colorings. Colorful Sally light-foot crabs crawl along the shoreline near to the famous “blow hole.”

After lunch and a wet landing in Gardner Bay on Espanola Island (Hood), you walk along a seemingly endless stretch of this white sandy beach where you’ll find large colonies of sea lions. With no trail to follow this is a chance to explore or take a long walk.

You may find a Galapagos hawk, Darwin’s finches or Hood mockingbird. Swim with sea lions right from the beach, explore the bay and islets by kayak or just relax on the beach.

There’s an excellent snorkeling site off Gardner Islet with a colorful diversity of sea life near Tortuga Rock. Explore caves by Zodiac covered with invertebrates. We return to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner.

DAY 4: Floreana Island: Punta Cormorant, Devil’s Crown & Post Office Bay

Step ashore at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island (Charles), one of the few populated islands in the Galapagos. Floreana presents a rich human history full of mystery and intrigue and the wildlife is abundant. Your first step on the green-sand beach is greeted by the sounds of sea lions.

You’ll follow a trail to a brackish lagoon, and the home of pintail ducks, common stilts, and the Greater Flamingos, the pinkest in the world.

Continuing on, you wind your way past a rich variety of plants including Morning Glory, Cut Leaf daisies, Palo Verdes and Scalesia leading to a beach with powder-soft sand. Sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand dunes and rays swim in the shallow water.

After the walk, take the opportunity to snorkel at Devil’s Crown or Champion , a shallow sunken crater colonized by a brilliant array of colorful fish and corral. Choose to have a picnic lunch on deck or dine inside.

After lunch, enjoy a visit to Post Office Bay , which is not the most scenic but definitely one of the most famous sites in Galapagos.

Here is where a wooden barrel was erected and put into use by whaling ships in the late 18 th century. Mail was put into the barrel and picked up and delivered by ships heading home, mostly to Europe and the United States.

You are invited to leave a post card and to pick up any mail from your home area. Our group returns to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner.

DAY 5: Santa Cruz Island: Highlands & Charles Darwin Center

Our bus takes us to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island . The scenery gradually changes as the route winds through all seven vegetation zones found in Galapagos.

Here, you visit the tortoise reserve at Las Primicias, one of the private farms in the highlands where giant tortoises are found in their natural habitat. Next, a stop at “the tunnels,” which are the largest lava tubes found in Galapagos.

Then it’s off to visit Los Gemelos ( “the twins” ), a pair of large pit craters where the bright red male vermilion flycatcher is right at home.

After lunch, a visit to the Centro de Crianza Fausto Llerena (aka the Charles Darwin Research Station) puts us among several tortoise species and the breeding center where new hatchlings are studied and protected until they’re ready for release back to the wild.

Scientists from all over the globe work at the station where they conduct biological research from anatomy to zoology.

A stop at Van Straelen Hall provides the opportunity to view exhibits and a presentation. Visitors can see the tortoise and land iguanas.

Puerto Ayora is the social heart of the islands with the largest population of 24,000 people. This evening you have the option to return to your yacht for a buffet dinner or remain in town on your own account.

Those who return to the yacht will be provided zodiacs to return to town to shop for souvenirs or to stop in at an internet café and connect with home. Zodiacs will be provided for your return to your yacht.

DAY 6: Bartolome Island & Sombrero Chino

At Bartolome Island , after a dry landing you’ll swear you’re walking on the moon. This young Island is inhospitable to most plants and animals.

From the beach you climb stairs for 30 minutes to arrive at the summit of a once-active volcano. Along the way, pause to marvel at lava bombs, spatter cones and cinder cones.

From the top of the wooden stairs, gaze out across the island for a panoramic view of the island and “Pinnacle Rock,” an eroded tuff cone.

Crystal-clear water is an invitation to snorkel from the beach with schools of tropical fish and Galapagos penguins or take a Zodiac ride.

After lunch, enjoy a visit to Las Bachas ( “barges” ). Just off this long stretch of beach with soft, white sand are interior lagoons where the Greater flamingo forages for food.

This stop also provides a wonderful chance to snorkel from the beach. Located off the southern tip of Santiago is Sombrero Chino aka Chinese Hat , a place owing its name to its shape.

After a wet beach landing near sea lion colonies, the trail gives way to a primeval landscape of volcanic rubble including cracked lava formations and lava tubes.

Marine iguanas and pairs of oystercatchers like it here, where you have the option nearby to snorkel at a site frequented by Galapagos penguins. After a briefing, enjoy a great dinner at anchor in a calm protected area.

DAY 7: South Plazas Island & North Seymour Island

Today we visit South Plaza Island , a small geological uplift with tall cliffs offering spectacular views. After a dry landing, the trails lead us through prickly pear cactus, or opuntia , and sesuvium .

Here you can find the Galapagos Land iguana feeding on the cactus leaves. Toward the end of the hill, you encounter a colony of bachelor sea lions. The dominant bulls are in various stages of recovery from battles lost over prime beach territory.

Swallow-tailed gulls, Shearwaters and Red-billed tropicbirds build their nests along the cliffs. After a dry landing at North Seymour Island , a small geological uplift, you follow a trail that leads to Swallow-tailed gulls, Blue-footed boobies and the endemic Land iguanas.

Visit the largest colony of Magnificent frigate birds found in Galapagos. Strolling the beach, witness Marine iguanas and sea lions body surf the northern swells.

After the walk you can take a snorkeling opportunity offered in deep water. Back at the yacht, you’ll partake in the Captain’s farewell cocktail party and dinner as well as a special slide show presentation by your guides.

DAY 8: San Cristobal Interpretation Center & Airport

With a visit to the Interpretation Center on San Cristobal Island you gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the Islands.

Afterwards, the group spends time in port before heading to the airport for our flight back to the mainland, departing at noon on Aerogal.

Overnight:  –

Meals Included: Breakfast

* 7-day/ 6-night cruise option  Passengers can disembark on Saturday from Baltra for a shorter, 6-night cruise. This is available only on seasonal or peak departure dates and not on holiday weeks.

ITINERARY B: Northern-Western Route DAY 1: San Cristobal Airport to La Galapaguera Cerro Colorado (yacht) DAY 2: Tower (Genovesa) Island: Darwin Bay and Prince Philips Steps (yacht) DAY 3: Santa Cruz Island: Las Bachas and Cerro Dragon (yacht) DAY 4: Fernandina Island: Punta Espinoza and Isabela Island: Urbina Bay (yacht) DAY 5: Isabela Island: Elizabeth Bay & Tagus Cove (yacht) DAY 6: Santiago Island: Puerto Egas and Rabida Island (yacht) DAY 7: Santa Cruz Island: Highlands and Charles Darwin Station (yacht) DAY 8: San Cristobal Island: Interpretation Center and Airport

origin yacht galapagos

DAY 1: San Cristobal Airport & La Galapaguera Cerro Colorado

The group travels by bus to the highlands to visit Centro de Crianza Jacinto Gordillo aka La Galapaguera Cerro Colorado where the national park has established a breeding program for the giant land tortoises that you will encounter in their natural habitat. Learn about their origin, evolution and threats by introduced animals at the information center.

Along the trail, you find the San Cristobal (Chatham) mockingbird and Calandrinia plant, both endemic to this island. After joining your fellow yacht mates this evening for the island briefing, you will enjoy our captain’s welcome cocktail party and dinner prepared by our well-trained chefs.

DAY 2: Tower (Genovesa) Island: Darwin Bay & Prince Philips Steps

Spend the entire day on Tower Island (Genovesa), considered to be one of the most spectacular Islands in Galapagos for bird species.

Your wet landing at Darwin Bay will land you on a coral sand beach where Swallow-tailed and Lava gulls gather near the tide pools. Enter a forest of Opuntia cactus and mangroves where colonies of Great frigate birds nest.

The males inflate their red-throated pouches to attract the females flying overhead. The trail leads through a rich intertidal zone with a wide diversity of wildlife.

After lunch and a dry landing at Prince Philip’s Steps, a trail leads to Red-footed boobies nesting in Palo Santo trees and Nazca boobies nesting near the trail. In an open lava field, find large numbers of Storm petrels.

If you are lucky, we will see the elusive Short-eared owl. Chose to have a picnic lunch on deck or dine inside. Look for the beautiful Red-billed Tropic bird found in the crevices along the cliff by kayak or Zodiac.

You can choose to swim or snorkel from the beach with sea lions in these northern warmer waters or for those with experience, we offer snorkeling in deeper water. Return to the yacht for briefing and dinner before we cross the equator.

DAY 3: Santa Cruz Island: Las Bachas & Cerro Dragon

Today we visit Las Bachas (“the barges”). Just off this long stretch of beach with soft, white sand are interior lagoons where the Greater flamingo forages for food.

This stop also provides a wonderful chance to snorkel from the beach. At Black Turtle Cove aka Caleta Tortuga Negra we have a zodiac ride through a series of coves and inlets surrounded by mangroves.

Here you can view pairs of mating sea turtles (Sept to Feb), white-tipped reef sharks and golden cow-nosed rays. Located on the northern tip of Santa Cruz is Cerro Dragon aka Dragon Hill .

Along the trail, we find Darwin Finches, Galapagos Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, Audubon Shearwater and the endemic land iguanas, orange-yellow in color with large spines along their backs, were once part of the Darwin Station’s breeding program.

We find pink flamingos feeding in the salt-water lagoon as well as other lagoon birds; stilts, pintail ducks, sandpipers and more.

From the top of the hill, we enjoy a majestic view of the bay island covered in Opuntia cactus, Palo Santo and Cordia Lutea (muyuyu). After the briefing and dinner, we sail toward the western islands and cross the equator line for the second time.

DAY 4: Fernandina Island: Punta Espinoza & Isabela Island: Urbina Bay

Today you start with a semi-wet landing at Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island , the youngest and most pristine Island in Galapagos where no mammals were introduced.

Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch around the coast. Hundreds of Marine iguanas, members of the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline.

Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory. Flightless cormorants build their nests on the point and Galapagos hawks fly overhead.

There is a chance to snorkel here with sea turtles. After lunch, you will cross the Bolivar Chanel where whales are often spotted and dolphins ride the bow wave.

We disembark at Urbina Bay on Isabela Island , where four miles of coastal seabed and its marine life was exposed due to a dramatic uplift in 1954 when the volcano erupted.

The marine remnants of coral skeletons, some of them waist-high, are visited after a wet landing on the beach. Urbina is home to the very large and colorful Galapagos land iguana.

You will osee here occasionally giant tortoises and Darwin finches. Brown pelicans and Flightless cormorants nest here, and giant Marine iguanas are seen along the coast. You may encounter penguins while snorkeling here.

At Punta Vicente Roca , a Zodiac ride offers an incredible view of the tuff walls, and can enter the wave-sculpted cave where a sea turtle could be lurking. You may spot the dorsal fin of a Mola Mola, an odd-looking giant sun fish. You return to the yacht for a briefing and dinner.

DAY 5: Isabela Island: Elizabeth Bay & Tagus Cove

Today you visit by zodiac Elizabeth Bay on Isabela Island, starting with a visit to a secluded cove lined with large red mangrove trees. Here, turtles, rays, and shore birds can be seen.

You then motor to the rocky islets known as “Las Marielas,” where a colony of nesting penguins, Flightless cormorants and giant Marine iguanas are found. Isabela was created when six volcanoes flowed together and formed the largest island in Galapagos.

You have a dry landing at Tagus Cove, a favorite anchorage for pirates and whalers over the centuries. Old graffiti dating back to the 1800’s is written on the rocky cliffs.

Explore the coves by zodiac or kayak to find Galapagos penguins, boobies, pelicans and other seabirds. An uphill hike brings you to a salt-water lagoon, a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields and volcanic formations.

An excellent snorkeling site is offered from the zodiac or, if you prefer, take a kayak and explore the shoreline. After dinner, a sky full of stars beckons all on deck to observe the galaxy while crossing the equator for the last time.

DAY 6: Santiago Island: Puerto Egas & Rabida Island

We stroll along the shoreline at Puerto Egas on Santiago Island (James) looking for octopus, starfish and other sea life caught in the tide pools.

At low tide, catch a glimpse of marine iguanas as they feed on exposed green algae. Watch for great blue herons, lava herons, American oystercatchers and yellow-crowned night herons.

Our walk ends at the grottos, deep pools of clear water where you encounter fur sea lions. Before returning to the yacht, there is a snorkeling opportunity.

After lunch, take a seat on deck to view the dramatic landscape and dolphins that are often spotted here.

You begin the day by disembarking on Rabida Island (Jervis) , located near James Island. Rabida is considered the geographic center of Galapagos because this island sports the most diversified volcanic rocks.

The dark-red sand beach originated from the high content of iron in the volcanic stones. While strolling along the trail, you may find Marine iguanas, mocking birds, yellow warblers and several species of Darwin finches leading to a saltwater lagoon where Greater flamingos migrate.

After the walk, there is not-to-miss snorkeling option with a large colony of sea lions. You return to the yacht for the Captain’s Farwell cocktail party and dinner as well as a special slide show presentation by your guides.

DAY 7: Santa Cruz Island: Highlands & Charles Darwin Station

The bus takes the group to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island . The scenery gradually changes as the route winds through all seven vegetation zones found in the Galapagos.

Those who return to the yacht will be provided zodiacs to return to town to shop for souvenirs or to stop in at an internet café and connect with home. Zodiacs will return you to the yacht.

By bus you visit the Interpretation Center on San Cristobal Island. Opened in 1999, here you gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the islands. Afterwards, you spend some time in port prior to heading to the airport for your flight back to the mainland.

* 7-day/ 6-night cruise option  Passengers can disembark on Saturday in Baltra for a shorter, 6-night cruise. This is available on seasonal or peak departure dates only and not holiday weeks.

For those passengers departing early and require a transfer to the airport, there is an additional charge of $90 for three or fewer passengers.

The return flight from Baltra is subject to availability and confirmation is requested at the time of booking.

Enjoy a life-enriching adventure that redefines luxury expedition cruising aboard one of the luxury sister ships, Origin, Theory or Evolve. Venture ashore in small groups of 10 to experience these islands up close and personal. Small groups led by expert naturalist guides allow travelers to have a more authentic and educational experience.

The Origin, Theory & Evolve operate two 8-day Galapagos cruise itineraries, which can be combined to create a comprehensive 15-day cruise, or shortened into 7-day routes.

Possible shore excursions aboard the Origin, Theory & Evolve yachts include hiking ancient lava fields where you may encounter prehistoric reptiles; witnessing the courtship dance of the blue-footed boobies; viewing Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants and massive waved albatross; and exploring beaches of black, red and green sand. Snorkel, kayak or stand-up paddleboard in a marine reserve teeming with ocean wildlife that includes sea lions, dolphins, whales and tame sharks. Chic, stylish and luxuriously comfortable in equal measure, the prestigious Origin, Theory & Evolve are the only Relais & Chateaux-affiliated yachts sailing the Galapagos. Ecuadorian-owned and operated like floating five-star boutique hotels, they offer an intimate voyage, exquisite level of concierge service, locally sourced and refined gastronomy, and very best amenities the archipelago can offer.

These upscale sister ships are also leaders in Galapagos eco friendly, sustainable travel to the Galapagos Islands. The parent company was the first to earn and maintain the ecological certification SmartVoyager and is Ecuador’s first carbon-neutral cruise operator. Additionally, the Origin, Theory & Evolve all hold Rainforest Alliance verification, offering a gold standard for sustainable tourism.

Origin, Theory & Evolve Galapagos Cruises offer talented naturalist guides, easy nature hikes and snorkeling. Each naturalist takes a group of no more than 10 passengers on all shore excursions and shares extensive insights into the islands’ diverse wildlife and natural history. This uniquely small guest-to-guide ratio is why these ships make our list of Galapagos luxury cruises . Small pangas carry passengers to shore for island visits where you will observe and photograph tortoise, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, volcanic landscapes and vivid sunsets. Families will appreciate select Galapagos family cruises geared towards active travelers with children.

Highlights of the East Galapagos Islands itinerary include visiting the intriguing waved albatross (April-Dec) only found on Espanola and spotting swallow-tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls on earth. On Bartolome, feel like you are on a mountain on the moon by summiting a dormant volcano. Get a new perspective with Floreana’s rich human history as well as spend time with the Galapagos penguins, herons and blue-footed boobies. Snorkel the waters around Devil’s Crown, a sunken crater with fish, coral, sea turtles and eagle rays. And send a postcard from Post Office Bay while learning about the unusual postal service of the Galapagos.

Highlights of the West Galapagos Islands itinerary include a coffee tasting on a biodynamic farm; the bird haven of Genovesa with opportunities to search out short-eared owls and frigatebirds; the white sands populated with greater flamingos on Santa Cruz; snorkeling to find penguins and sea turtles and view graffiti left by pirates on Isabela; a visit to the young and pristine island, Fernandina, to observe the largest colony of marine iguanas; and a ramble on the red beaches of Rabida.

At only 20 guests each, with interconnecting and triple cabin options, the Origin, Theory and Evolve are AdventureSmith favorites for private  Galapagos yacht charters .

Read on for details about this trip, or learn more about all of AdventureSmith’s Galapagos Islands cruise options and  Galapagos trips .

8-Day East Itinerary

Visit San Cristobal, Espanola, Floreana, Santa Cruz, Bartolome, Chinese Hat, South Plaza and North Seymour Islands. Highlights include visiting the waved albatross (April-Dec) only found on Espanola, spotting swallow-tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls on earth, and snorkeling the waters around Devil’s Crown — a sunken crater with fish, coral, sea turtles and eagle rays.

Route map of Origin, Theory, Evolve & Letty Galapagos Cruises 8-day East itinerary, operating roundtrip from San Cristobal Island with visits to Espanola, Floreana, Santa Cruz, Bartolome, South Plaza & North Seymour islands.

Upon arrival to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal Island, transfer by bus then panga to the anchored yacht. After a welcome briefing and safety drill, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch served on board. Settle in after lunch before the yacht leaves the harbor. Within a few hours, reach Leon Dormido, (Spanish for sleeping lion), a remnant of a vertical tuff cone formation, rising 500 feet from the ocean. Erosion has split the rock providing a spectacular backdrop for photographs at sunset. As the ship circumnavigates the formation, easily spot blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies and frigatebirds on the cliffs. After a briefing on activities for the following day, join the captain and crew for a cocktail reception. An elegant multi-course dinner, prepared by the onboard accomplished chefs, is served.

Origin, Theory, Evolve

lunch, dinner

Spend the morning with a panga cruise at Cerro Brujo, a breathtaking white coral beach with expansive views and good birdwatching and interesting geological formations like The Cathedral. After the cruise, take a peaceful walk along the beach, swim with sea lions or use the kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.

Return to the yacht for lunch served on the sun deck (weather permitting) before going ashore for a hike at Punta Pitt, a tuff formation that serves as a nesting site for many seabirds including all three types of boobies (blue-footed, red-footed and Nazca), both frigatebird species, swallow-tailed gulls, storm petrels, shearwaters and brown pelicans. Punta Pitt is considered one of the best sites for birds in the archipelago and is also home to a colony of sea lions. At Pitt Rock, enjoy a snorkel or swim with sea lions and colorful fish such as King Angel and surgeon fish before returning to the ship for a briefing and dinner.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today disembark at Punta Suarez on Espanola Island, home to the greatest number of endemic species found in Galapagos. Sea lions bark noisy greetings as you land on the beach, while curious mockingbirds peck at your shoelaces. Colonies of blue-footed boobies engage in sky-pointing to show off for potential mates. From April to December, the waved albatross, found only on Espanola, performs its wild mating ritual. Other easily spotted wildlife are the Nazca boobies busily caring for their young and stunning swallow-tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls in the world. You will also find Darwin’s finches, Galapagos doves, red-billed tropicbirds and Galapagos hawks, as well as a unique species of marine iguanas with traces of red and green colorings. Follow the trail to the dramatic ocean blowhole and watch for colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs crawling along the shoreline. Return to the ship for lunch on board.

In the afternoon, disembark at Gardner Bay, where large colonies of sea lions dot the seemingly endless white-sand beach. Enjoy time to take a leisurely stroll or relax on the beach, watching for birds such as the Galapagos hawk, Darwin’s finch, or Hood mockingbird. Swim with the playful sea lions from the beach, explore the bay and islets by kayak or take a panga ride to explore the caves covered with invertebrates. Admire the colorful array of underwater life at the excellent snorkeling site near Tortuga Rock. Return to the ship for a briefing followed by dinner.

Step ashore at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island, one of the few populated islands in Galapagos with a rich and intriguing human history. The olive-sand beach is alive with the sounds of sea lions, lava herons, yellow-crowned night herons, blue-footed boobies and penguins. Follow a trail to a brackish lagoon, home to Bahama ducks, common stilts, Galapagos flycatchers, yellow warblers and the greater flamingos. Wind your way past a rich variety of plants including the morning glory, cut-leaf daisies, mangroves (black, red and white), palo verde and scalesia. The trail leads to a beach where sea turtles lay their eggs in the powdery sand dunes and sting rays swim in the shallow water. After the walk, there is an opportunity to snorkel at Devil’s Crown, a shallow sunken crater colonized by a brilliant array of colorful fish and coral, white-tipped sharks, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and sea stars. Lunch is served aboard on the sundeck, weather permitting.

After lunch, visit one of the most famous sites in Galapagos: Post Office Bay, where a post barrel was erected in the late 18th Century for use by English whaling vessels. Visitors are invited to leave a post card and to pick up any mail destined for their home area. There is an opportunity to swim from the beach with sea lions. Late afternoon, take a panga or paddleboard ride near Baroness Point to look for sea turtles and rays before returning to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner.

Disembark at Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, the social heart of the Galapagos, with a population of 24,000. Travel by bus to a higher altitude with beautiful geological formations including the lava tunnels at El Mirador and Los Gemelos (the twins), a pair of massive craters. The guides will explain how they were formed. The highlight of the morning is a visit to Rancho Primicias, a privately-owned ranch where tortoises roam free. These slow-moving giants can grow to be over 500 pounds!

In the afternoon, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, the tortoise corrals and breeding center with hatchlings and miniature tortoises that will be repatriated when grown. Visit the exhibit honoring Lonesome George, a worldwide icon of conservation as the last surviving tortoise from Pinta Island that tragically died of natural causes. There’s another story with a happier ending: Diego, a tortoise from the San Diego zoo, brought his species back from the brink of extinction by fathering hundreds of offspring. Return to the yacht for the briefing and customary delicious multi-course dinner.

Wake up in solitude with no other boats in sight. Choose one of two options for a morning activity on Bartolome Island: a challenging hike or a panga cruise. The 400-wooden-step hike winds past mini lava cones and ends in a panoramic view of Pinnacle Rock. The panga ride around the island looks for penguins. Next, snorkel with schools of tropical fish, white-tipped reef sharks and Galapagos penguins. Return to the vessel for lunch served on the sundeck (weather permitting).

The afternoon itinerary depends on your yacht. Origin guests go ashore at Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat), a small island off the southern tip of Santiago that owes its name to its shape. Sea lions, marine iguanas, oystercatchers and volcanic rubble await. Theory guests visit Bachas Beach, including a wonderful opportunity for snorkeling after searching for flamingos in the interior lagoons. Evolve guests enjoy a slow panga excursion at Black Turtle Cove, listening for the telltale deep inhale of a sea turtle and watching for the wings of a school of golden rays. A guide aboard each yacht will offer an enrichment lecture on Charles Darwin and evolution or ongoing social/environmental projects, tonight after dinner.

Today’s visit is at South Plaza, a small geological uplift with tall cliffs where swallow-failed gulls, shearwaters, and red-billed tropicbirds build their nests. The trail leads you through opuntia (prickly pear) and sesuvium, and land iguanas are seen feeding on cactus leaves. The island is also home to a colony of bachelor sea lions, with dominant bulls in various stages of recovery from battles over prime beach territory. Return to the ship for lunch as the yacht repositions to anchor between North and South Seymour in deeper water. After lunch, snorkel at North Seymour, a small geological uplift which hosts swallow-tailed gulls, blue-footed boobies, endemic land iguanas and the largest colony of magnificent frigatebirds in the Galapagos. Watch for marine iguanas and sea lions body surfing the northern swells. Return to the ship for the captain’s farewell cocktail party and dinner, followed by a slideshow presentation.

Disembark after breakfast and travel by bus to the Interpretation Center on San Cristobal to gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the Islands. Afterwards, spend time in port before heading to the airport for your flight back to the mainland.

Terms & Conditions

This trip is subject to AdventureSmith Explorations  Terms and Conditions . Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. A Traveler Information Form, which includes a release of liability, must be completed and signed by all travelers. Your Adventure Specialist will send you a unique link to complete this form along with a packing list and extensive pre-departure and travel insurance information upon booking confirmation.

Arrival & Departure

Most flights to the Galapagos will depart Quito or Guayaquil between 6:00am and 11:00am on Day 1 and return between 2:00pm and 6:00pm on the final day. We highly recommend travelers arrive to Ecuador two days prior to their Galapagos cruise. If you would like assistance with international flights, please visit our  Booking Flights  resource page. Note: Your passport must be valid 6 months after your Ecuador trip concludes.

Internal Flights

Flights from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galapagos are not included in the cruise price, but are arranged for you by AdventureSmith Explorations through your ship. Your Adventure Specialist will book these flights for you on the scheduled Galapagos flight for your particular departure. Airfares vary by departure; your Adventure Specialist will detail these for you in their proposal and on your invoice. On flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands, baggage weight limits are currently 50 pounds for checked items, and 17 pounds for carry-on plus a small personal item. Subject to change.

There are numerous opportunities to swim, kayak, stand-up paddleboard and snorkel. The underwater experience is an integral part of any Galapagos cruise. We encourage all travelers to try snorkeling. Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins, floating vest and net bag) are provided. Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.

Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (dinghies). Trip members will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

Optional rendezvous scuba diving, where a dive operator meets the cruise to take a group out for the day, can be arranged for an additional cost. Diving must be arranged in advance and may be subject to a minimum number of guests. All diving equipment is provided. Dive experience and certification is required. Participating in diving means guests miss the regularly scheduled activities for that day. Contact AdventureSmith for details.

Room Configuration

In addition to listed s ingle  cabin rates, select double-occupancy cabins may be available at the standard per-person rate for t ravelers willing to share with the same gender. Shares that remain unmatched prior to departure are subject to pay the single rate.

Families & Children

Kids 5 years and older are welcomed aboard all departure dates, however family departures are recommended for young families. C hildren 4 years and under are welcomed aboard all designated Family departures, as well as exclusive charters. Children and teens age 17 years and younger receive a 15% discount off the regular cruise rate. Children age 11 and under receive a 30% discount off the airfare from mainland Ecuador. Discounts exclude holiday weeks and cannot be combined with other discounts. There is a limit of one discount per youth traveling with an adult paying full fare (two total discounts per family).

Special Family Departures are geared toward families traveling with children ages 7 to 17 that include age-appropriate activities and kid-friendly meals. Kids are welcome to visit the bridge and learn about astronomy, navigational charts and tie nautical knots with the captain. Special game nights and events like drawing contests and talent shows are planned. Family teen (ages 12-17) and college (ages 18-21) departures may also be available. Special Family Departures are not recommended for adults traveling without children. Contact AdventureSmith for details and availability.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Due to the active nature of volcanoes in the Western Galapagos, alternate excursions may be offered. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.

8-Day West Itinerary

Visit San Cristobal, Genovesa, Isabela, Fernandina, Santiago and the Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island. Highlights include searching out short-eared owls on the bird haven of Genovesa; a visit to the young and pristine island, Fernandina, to observe the largest colony of marine iguanas; and a ramble on the red beach of Rabida.

Route map of Origin, Theory, Evolve & Letty Galapagos Cruises 8-day West itinerary, operating roundtrip from San Cristobal Island with visits to San Cristobal, Genovesa, Isabela, Fernandina, Santiago and Santa Cruz islands.

Spend the entire day on Genovesa Island, one of the most spectacular places in Galapagos for bird species. Land at Prince Philip’s Steps, where red-footed boobies nest in palo santo trees, Nazca boobies nest near the trail and storm petrels gather in large numbers in an open lava field. With luck, you may see the elusive short-eared owl. Return to the ship for a BBQ lunch on the sun deck followed by an Ecuadorian ceviche lesson. Then head out on a deep water snorkel excursion from the pangas, or choose to paddle from a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the cliffs. Next, land at Darwin Bay, a coral sand beach where swallow-tailed and lava gulls gather near the tide pools. Enter a forest of opuntia cactus and mangroves where colonies of great frigatebirds nest, the males inflating their red-throated pouches to attract females as they fly overhead (June). Choose to relax on the beach or swim with sea lions in these northern warmer waters. Return to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner and an evening full of stars.

Today visit Las Bachas on the northern side of Santa Cruz Island. Explore the long stretch of a white sand beach and the interior lagoons populated by greater flamingo, then take the opportunity for some wonderful snorkeling from the beach and hope to see your first sea turtle. Return to the ship for lunch. This afternoon, step ashore on Dragon Hill for a majestic view of the bay and the island landscape covered in opuntia cactus, palo santo and muyuyo. The trail also offers excellent opportunities to see Darwin’s finches, Galapagos flycatchers, yellow warblers and Audubon’s shearwater, as well as the endemic land iguanas that were once part of the Darwin Station’s breeding program. In the saltwater lagoon, possible pink flamingos feed alongside other birds such as stilts, pintail ducks and sandpipers. After the briefing and dinner, sail toward the western islands and cross the equator for the second time.

This morning take a panga ride to Punta Vicente Roca, which offers an incredible view of the tuff walls, where you can enter the wave-sculpted cave. There is an excellent chance to snorkel here and find penguins and sea turtles that frequent this area. During lunch, sail through the Bolivar Chanel. Take a seat on deck to view the dramatic scenery and watch for whales and dolphins riding the bow wave and possibly the Mola Mola, an odd looking giant sun fish. Disembark at Urbina Bay on Isabela Island, where four miles of coastal seabed were exposed due to a dramatic uplift during a volcanic eruption in 1954. See the remnants of coral skeletons, some of them waist-high, and keep an eye out for the very large and colorful Galapagos land iguanas, as well as marine iguanas, Darwin’s finches, brown pelicans, flightless cormorants and the occasional giant tortoise. Return to the ship for briefing and dinner. A sky full of stars beckons you to go on deck and observe the galaxy.

This morning’s stop is at Punta Espinoza on Fernandina, the youngest and most pristine island in Galapagos, with no introduced animals. Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory, and hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, basking in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Out on the point, the flightless cormorants build their nests close to shore since they lost their ability to fly. There is a chance to snorkel here with large sea turtles that frequent this area before returning to the ship for lunch.

After lunch go ashore on Tagus Cove, a favorite anchorage for pirates and whalers over the centuries. Sections of the rocky cliffs are covered with graffiti dating back to the 1800s. An optional uphill hike leads to a saltwater lagoon and a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields and volcanic formations. Take advantage of the secluded cove and explore the shoreline by glass-bottom boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard in search of Galapagos penguins, boobies, pelicans and other seabirds. Return to the ship for briefing and dinner as we cross the equator for the last time.

This morning disembark on Rabida , a small island considered to be the geographic center of Galapagos because its volcanic rocks are the most diversified in the archipelago. The dark red color of the beach comes from the high iron content in the volcanic stones. Follow the trail to a saltwater lagoon where greater flamingos migrate, keeping an eye out for marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers and Darwin’s finches. Enjoy a panga tour aimed at spotting mobula and manta rays. Afterwards, do not miss the opportunity to snorkel with a colony of sea lions, rays and white-tipped reef sharks. Return to the ship for lunch.

The afternoon itinerary depends on your yacht. Origin guests take a panga ride at Black Turtle Cove through a series of coves and inlets surrounded by mangroves, to view pairs of mating sea turtles (September to February), white-tipped reef sharks and golden cow-nosed rays. Theory and Evolve guests visit Puerto Egas on Santiago Island, to stroll along the shoreline looking for octopus, starfish, great blue herons, lava herons, American oystercatchers, yellow-crowned night herons and marine iguanas at low tide. The walk ends at deep pools of clear water with fur sea lions and the opportunity to snorkel from the beach. Return to the ship for the captain’s farewell cocktail with the crew, dinner and a special slide show presentation by the guides.

Disembark at Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, the social heart of the Galapagos, with a population of 24,000 humans. Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, the tortoise corrals and the breeding center with hatchlings and miniature tortoises that will be repatriated when grown. Visit the new exhibit honoring Lonesome George, a worldwide icon of conservation as the last surviving tortoise from Pinta Island that tragically died of natural causes. A more hopeful story is Diego, a saddleback tortoise whose species was reduced to 14 individuals before he was transported from the San Diego Zoo and who has since fathered hundreds of descendants.

After lunch on board, travel by bus to the highlands, passing through all seven vegetation zones found in Galapagos. Your destination is Montemar, a privately-owned land devoted to the restoration of habitat for giant tortoises where they roam freely in their natural habitat. Learn about coffee growing and harvesting organic and biodynamic coffee during this exclusive visit and hike. Stroll the grounds and take in raw nature, enjoy the view and local art and handicrafts on display. Return to the ship for the captain’s farewell dinner and a presentation with highlights from your week in paradise.

The morning itinerary depends on your yacht. Origin and Theory guests visit the Interpretation Center on San Cristobal to discover more about the human history of the Galapagos Islands. There’s also a paved trail where one can enjoy a brief walk before a bus ride into town. Evolve guests enjoy an early morning visit to Isla Lobos. Afterwards, spend time in port before heading to the airport for your flight back to the mainland.

Reviews from Our Experts So You Know What to Expect

This detailed review of what it’s like aboard the 20-guest Origin in the Galapagos Islands showcases not only the guides, yacht, wildlife and itinerary but also how it feels to be among a community of like-minded passengers.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

This was my best holiday ever, I loved it and it was made so easy by Andrew and AdventureSmith because I didn't have to worry about finding accommodation or transfers from airports etc it was sooooooooooo relaxing for me. All the accommodation was first class and the food was amazing.

This trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The destinations were fascinating, the boat was beautiful, the crew was excellent, and the naturalist was outstanding. Every island had something to offer and the excursions were very well planned.

Beyond excellent! This was our 3rd trip to the Galapagos and unquestionably the best! Every member of our three generation trip with six adults and five teenager agreed. The activities (hiking, snorkeling, nature observation and learning), and family time on and off the ship were well-balanced. Active and yet some down time on the ship. Perfect...great destination/experiences, superb client service, and attention to details made this an extra special trip.

Accommodations Review

We loved the Mountain Lodges Salkantay Hike. The Salkantay Mountain Lodges were fantastic, only one thing would really help would be some form of drying room or oil heaters to dry wet clothing.

Meals Review

I was hoping to take some weight off, but that wasn't going to happen with 3 course meals everywhere we went.  The meals were amazing and having a 3 course lunch made for us up in the mountains was awesome.

Crew & Guides Review

Peter and Desirae Guides at the Galapagos were wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly people, we really liked them we just found that they lectured for too long, 1km walks taking 3 hours with most of it being lectures.  Just a little too much information.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Very impressed with Andrew's expertise and co-ordination of our trip, I changed my mind on what we wanted to do on numerous occasions and he effortlessly (well that is how he made it seem to me) gave me new itineraries, with prices and times etc. The Galapagos wildlife was my original destination and since we were going to be in the area and its a long way to come from Australia we tacked Machu Picchu on and are very glad we did. Thank you, Andrew.

Traveler Advice

- Make sure to take insect repellent and if you have issues with bites, some antihistamines.

- Possibly go to Cusco and couple of days early to acclimatise and make sure you read the dosage of the altitude medication properly.

- Take aspirin as pain reliever in high altitudes because it thins the blood.

- No need to take shampoo, conditioner or body wash as all the lodges and the ships provide it.

This trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The destinations were fascinating, the boat was beautiful, the crew was excellent, and the naturalist was outstanding. Every island had something to offer and the excursions were very well planned.

The boat is beautiful and we benefitted from the fact that only 11 passengers were on board. Our cabin was noisy during passages, but we managed the sleep disruption with the daily naps that are accommodated by the schedule.

The breakfast and lunch buffets were very good, with a variety of hot dishes and fresh salads and fruit. Unfortunately, the dinner entrees were typically over-cooked. The service was top-notch at all times.

If a rating higher than "excellent" was available, I would choose it. Our naturalist, Ceci Guerrero was extremely knowledgable, organized, and enthusiastic about the subject matter. She is also a friendly and lovely person with a great sense of humor and fun. If I were to visit the Galapagos again, I would make sure to be on Ceci's vessel.

Everything proceeded without a hitch, and Justin made the transactions simple and painless. We wanted a grand adventure that would fit out limited schedule, and we got it. Thank you!

Keep in mind that the weather reports on the iPhone read 10 degrees F cooler than actual. Our theory is that the sensor is in a high misty location. I packed too many long-sleeved shirts.

Beautiful vessel, comfortable cabins, and a top deck that was the best outdoor gathering place we've ever experienced. Even the area where we off-boarded and on-boarded the pangas was designed for smooth access to equipment and for entry and exit.

Especially liked the breakfast and lunch being served as a buffet. Lots of options and opportunity to try new dishes.

Itinerary Review

Our whole family, especially the adults, weighs in on destinations for family trips. Our previous trip, a luxury African safari, set the bar high. Galapagos was an easy decision.[We most enjoyed]...snorkeling with the sea turtles, sea lions and fish probably took first place for everyone. Each animal, especially the first sightings of everything was always awesome, and our naturalists had so much information to enhance each encounter. On board the Theory the teenagers gave the hot tub high marks.

GO! This is a trip I would recommend with children/youth old enough to absorb the unique environment, and ecological learning of a truly one-of-a kind place.

Superlative, since excellent doesn't describe Gustavo and Jose Luis. Gustavo was the "fun dad" for our teenagers, creating special moments, photos and experiences (liking jumping off the top deck of the ship!) We had a 16 yr old grandson who had a fear of open waters and had never snorkeled--our guides successfully took on the challenge, and he snorkeled twice! Both Gustavo and Jose Luis were the most knowledgeable guides we've experienced.

Fellow Passengers Review

Delightful. Our cruise consisted of our party of 11 and a four-person family that was a perfect match. They had two teenagers whose ages fit right in with ours, and soon our families were blended. I think all parties would agree that our trip was enhanced for the adults and teens by the presence of our travel partners.

Well done! With special thanks and commendations to Andrew for all his help in shaping a perfect trip for our family. He was exceptional. We have had a very long experience together, with a delayed trip tangentially related to COVID that he helped us through, and he was with us start to finish. He has probably logged more than 50 email queries from me over planning this cruise (and adding an Amazon extension) and unfailingly responded often within the day, and always within 24 hours. Great advice about which company to book for the Amazon portion, and even provided counsel about logistics of our pre-cruise time in Quito.
