Invincible 40 Cat: 2019 Boat Buyers Guide

  • Updated: January 1, 2019

As a boat buyer, you might be asked, paraphrasing the server at your favorite diner inquiring about coffee sweetener, “One hull or two?”

Invincible’s patented monohull has one of the lowest drag coefficients in its class. On its Open Fisherman and Center Cabin boats, 33 to 42 feet long, an air-fed tunnel produces higher speeds with lower power, plus a more stable ride — all while maintaining supple maneuverability. Designed by naval architect Michael Peters, it’s a fast hull in which passengers stay dry and comfortable, even in rough seas.

Take the best from the Invincible monohull and double it, and you have the firm’s patent-pending catamaran hull, with that design’s additional stability.

Morelli & Melvin, America’s Cup sailing-yacht creators, created the hybrid semi-asymmetric design. The result? Monohull-like maneuverability with comfortable handling in even quartering and following seas.

A pod between Invincible cat hulls splits water to soften the ride, and even with their additional size, the cat fuel economy is comparable to a monohull.

Invincible 40 Cat A big, seaworthy boat that seems to yearn for single-day, as well as multiday, adventures to far-off fishing hot spots, the 40 Cat was Invincible’s first in that format, creating what it called “the most advanced fishing catamaran on the market.”

Seakeeping ability was its original and overriding goal, especially making high-speed turns without drastic throttle reduction. It accomplished that through its game-changing asymmetrical sponsons. The double-stepped hulls lift onto plane quickly, reaching 55 mph in 10 seconds and tops out at over 70 mph when rigged with 350 Verados.

A huge aft deck, with 26-inch-high gunwales and nearly 11½ feet interior width, sets the stage for efficiently fighting multiple fish.

Three livewells — twins of 55 gallons each at transom and a 72-gallon well beneath the cockpit sole — more than meet the two-livewell (93 percent) and big-bait-capacity (61 percent) minimums of survey respondents.

Coaming pads ring the interior to cushion anglers’ legs amid fights. When the battle’s done, the 40 Cat houses the catch in two massive fish boxes below the aft deck, with another pair forward.

Rod-holder and storage options let you create your own fishing boat. Options also include a hardtop, folding tower/dual station or crow’s-nest, three-across helm seat configurations, an aft-facing bench that adds seating for three more, an outrigger, coffin box and more.

Survey Says: On Target

  • Dry, stable ride matches boater priorities
  • Livewells meet or exceed expectations
  • Very fishable, solid, fast and reliable
  • Stable platform with plenty of speed, and room for live bait and equipment

Invincible Says

  • Looks as good as it rides
  • The best (boats) for fishing, diving and cruising
  • Premium customer service and unprecedented attention to detail
  • Built to order, by hand, so customers can choose exactly the accessories they want

invincible 40 catamaran review

TGYG LIFESTYLE BLOG

The invincible 40 catamaran vs. the freeman 42 catamaran.

  • September 9, 2020

The market for offshore catamarans is exploding. The new generation of catamarans are bigger, faster and a die-hard angler’s dream. Whether you need to travel 75 miles quickly to your favorite fishing spot or you want to head over to the Bahamas with everything you need, the new breed of offshore catamarans can do it all.

Invincible and Freeman are two of the most popular manufacturers of offshore catamarans in the 34 to 46-foot range. Freeman offers four models to choose from: a 34, a 37, a 42 and their new 47. Invincible offers four catamaran models: a 35, a 37, a 40 and their new 46 (as well as a lineup of monohulls). Today, we’ll look specifically at the Invincible 40 as compared to the Freeman 42.

When it comes to speed, range, fuel efficiency, fishability, spaciousness and amenities, both boats deliver. While two feet smaller than the Freeman 42, the Invincible 40 offers much of the same features.

The Invincible 40

  • Draft: 22″
  • Dry Weight with engines: 15,000 lbs
  • Fresh water: 80
  • Fuel capacity: 800 gallons
  • Max power: 1800 hp

The Freeman 42LR

  • LOA: 42’0″
  • Beam: 11’9″
  • Draft: 24″
  • Dry Weight with engines: 14,500 lbs
  • Ready to fish: 17,500 lbs
  • Fresh water: 20 gallons

Catamarans

Fishability on both vessels is outstanding. The power and range of these boats are an obvious draw, but the myriad of features to enable a day pursuing your trophy catch is impressive to say the least. These boats offer numerous rod holders everywhere you might want them, huge livewells, fish boxes, tackle stations and storage for all your gear. With the beam extended all the way forward due to the catamaran hull design, the deck spaciousness of these center consoles is excellent. You can fish from every part of these boats with ease.

There are a few differences you’ll notice between the Freeman 42 and the Invincible 40 when spending time on them. First, the Invincible 40 comes with an optional dive door. The dive door is super useful for when the kids want to do a little swimming, but it can also come in handy when you’re pulling in a large fish. Perhaps not a deal breaker for many, but once you’ve become accustomed to using the dive door, it’s hard to go without it.

The bow on the Freeman 42 sits a bit higher than that of the Invincible 40. While catamarans, generally, sit a bit higher with higher freeboard than that of a monohull, the Freeman bow area sits even higher and has a step up in the bow which could be a tripping hazard in rough seas. The closer proximity to the water line on the Invincible can make various activities a bit easier, whether its walking around the deck or gaffing a fish.

The Invincible Brand

Additionally, the Invincible’s massive research & development efforts behind the hull construction make the boat really shine when leaning into high speed turns (similar to monohull handling). Long a criticism of the way catamaran’s ride, Invincible has spent considerable time and money innovating and improving the handling of its catamarans. These efforts continue to push the category to new heights.

While Freeman and Invincible are both indeed mainstays in the large cat category, Invincible’s approach to entering the market is quite unique. Backed by years of experience in the monohull market, Invincible took its time, spending years on research and development in order to enter the catamaran segment with a truly unique product.

Invincible partnered with legendary naval architecture firm Morrelli & Melvin, one of the world’s foremost authorities on multihull design. Armed with the resources of an established company and a partnership with premiere naval architects, Invincible started from scratch and spent years developing its entry into the market. The result was the impressive 40 Catamaran by Invincible. Following its successful launch, Invincible rolled out the 37 and the 35, and more recently, the 46.

Invincible’s patented, hybrid, semi-asymmetrical multihull design is the foundation of seakeeping abilities not seen in other catamarans. Simply put, no catamaran can execute the high-speed turn like an Invincible.

While backorder wait times may vary depending on the season and short-term increases in demand, generally speaking, Invincible is going to be building its boats slightly faster than Freeman due to its larger facility.

The company’s resources also mean they’re willing to accept near-endless variations of its product line. Buyers can customize just about every feature on the boat including things such as cup holders, rod holders, windshield type, seating layout and more. While many manufacturers like to limit options to simplify its build processes, Invincible just says, “Yes.” To about everything.

While the deep-V center consoles still reign supreme in Florida waters, more and more anglers are becoming interested in the catamaran option. With the latest outboard engines, these massive 40-foot catamarans are tough to match up with when it comes to deck spaciousness, speed, range and fuel efficiency.

While the entire line of Invincible catamarans will get you at least a 400-mile range at 40 mph, the 40 Invincible will offer 650+ miles at a 40-mph cruising speed. For anglers on the west coast of Florida where long runs are the norm, it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Are you in the market for an offshore catamaran? Consider talking to the Tom George Yacht Group team. The team of TGYG experts can help walk through your needs and wants and recommend the ideal boat for you and your family, ensuring long-term satisfaction on the Florida waters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are offshore catamarans so fuel efficient?

Catamarans can run with less water displacement than your typical monohull. Less displacement means better fuel economy. The less surface area via the two, narrower hulls as compared to a monohull means great fuel efficiency but also contributes to a comfortable ride since it can cut through the water with less “slamming.”

Do catamarans offer a better fishing experience compared to a monohull?

With regards to features such as rod holders, rod storage and livewells, the features are typically similar. Anglers appreciate the increased deck space that the catamaran offers as well as the ample storage, but the speed and range of these boats allowing Floridians to get to their favorite fishing spots fast really make these boats shine.

Are offshore catamarans becoming more popular in Florida?

While center console monohulls continue to be the most commonly owned boats around Florida, the offshore catamaran has seen a surge in popularity especially for anglers on the west coast of Florida where long runs are typical. The offshore cats started to be seen by Gulf coast fishing charter outlets a few years ago, and the newer line of larger, more powerful catamarans are giving even die-hard monohull enthusiasts compelling reasons for consideration.

2021 Invincible 46 Catamaran

  • By Randy Vance
  • Updated: March 11, 2021

Invincible Boats continues to gobble up market share like tuna devouring baitfish in the most competitive boat market of all: hardcore fishing boats, particularly serious offshore fishing boats. And it has proceeded to compete with a line that includes both center-consoles and some of the most exciting catamarans to hit the waterways.

Twenty-five years ago, boatbuilders began to bring forth cats, and while some anglers embraced them, most did not.

Invincible 46 Catamaran running off the beach

Why not? Cats get boaters to the fishing grounds through heavy seas in greater comfort, and they let anglers fish on a more stable platform that straddles waves as they move under the boat instead of cresting over them as h monohulls. But some early cats heeled outward in turns, giving the impression the hull might topple over until straight travel was resumed. Many old cats required an inordinate amount of horsepower to make speed but still didn’t attain expected performance. Comically, some “sneezed” as air and water compressed beneath the deck and between the sponsons got forced forward to sweep back over the boat.

Our test 46 Cat was powered with quad Mercury Racing 450R outboards. You might ask, “Why all that horsepower?” The simple answer is: Why not? This 46-foot platform carries crew in comfort and has all the accoutrement of a sport-fishing battlewagon. It would run well on less horsepower—say, quad 300s—but if spending a cool million or more on your boat—why scrimp?

Invincible 46 Catamaran forward storage

Interior and Accessories

The helm station is wide enough to accept dual Garmin 24-inch displays, and our test boat’s system boasted chirp, side imaging and standard sonar, along with radar and autopilot. The hardtop is bonded to the console, and tempered-glass windshields protect the crew. Acrylic side curtains deflect wind from the speed, preventing lost hats. Despite the massive console, we enjoyed a clear view forward from the cushy chairs with flip-up bolsters.

Invincible 46 Catamaran helm displays

There are two rows of helm seats, each three seats wide. Behind these is the mezzanine area with an aft-facing bench that conceals a rigging station—fold the back down to reveal three compartments with drawers and tackle boxes. A cooler underneath that bench was equipped with a chill plate to minimize the need for ice. Even more tackle storage resides in cabinets on each side of the lounge.

At the foredeck, two large lounges with contoured cushions, folding armrests with cup holders, and comfortably reclining backs sit atop dual coffin boxes, accessed when one lounge or the other is lifted toward the centerline. Compartment dividers can be removed, turning three compartments per side into one large enough to ice fish.

Invincible 46 Catamaran cockpit seating

Most surprising was the spacious compartment inside the console, large enough for comfortably changing clothes. It is also equipped with a head and sink. Easy access to all electronics, batteries, circuit breakers and more can be found inside.

Invincible 46 Catamaran systems

The fishing cockpit has four livewells: Two in the deck at 72 gallons each, and two in the transom at 60 gallons each. Our tester sported a pair of dual tuna tubes, but if the owner opts out of them, the spaces can hold additional seating. There are so many rod holders on the gunwales and transom, you could just about close your eyes and slip a rod butt in one. A dozen rocket launchers in the hardtop and 10 more rod holders in the console’s side tuck through ports in the hardtop.

Considering its size, nimble handling and serious fishability, the Invincible 46 Catamaran is a tough competitor to beat.

Invincible 46 Catamaran outboards and transom livewells

These custom-built boats display none of the nasty characteristics mentioned above. In fact, the new 46 Catamaran, when properly trimmed—i.e., the outboard engines inward, and the inboard engines out—heeled sweetly inward in turns as sharp as we cared to make.

Read Next: Our Test of the Mercury Racing 450R Outboards That Powered This Boat

Morrelli and Melvin, famous designers of racing and power cats, drew this boat. Like all Invincible cats, the 46 possesses a hybrid semi-asymmetrical sponson design that is responsible for its comfortable maneuverability. The inside sponson walls are nearly vertical, while outside walls are shaped like a longitudinal cross section of a V-hull. The designers added a double step, and the overall effect is quick acceleration, comfortable turning, and a soft ride that will make you eager to fish—and run hard—in all but the roughest weather.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Quad Mercury Racing 450R outboards
  • Drive/Prop: Merc Bravo 1 FS 26″ x 15.25″ 4-blade
  • Gear Ratio: 1.60:1 (5.44″ HD gear case) Fuel Load: 305 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 800 lb.

High Points

  • Overall fit-and-finish of this custom-built boat is clean, sturdy and striking.
  • Hawse pipes and inwale-mounted cleats ensure secure mooring that won’t mar the finish.
  • In-sole livewells are the most gentle on baits and a staple of tournament anglers.
  • Optional jump seats that replace the tuna tubes are too short for long-range comfort
  • Transom door is omitted and, in light of gunwale doors, the transom space would be better used for tuna tubes or jump seats.

Toughest Competitor

Competitors are rare for fishing Catamaran’s in the 46-foot LOA range, but Freeman Boat Works makes a beautiful 47 ($1,250,000 with quad Mercury Racing 450s) that boasts comparable handling benefits, and is generously equipped for the hardcore angler.

Invincible 33 Catamaran Boat Review

  • By Randy Vance
  • January 19, 2022

Invincible 33 Cat on the ocean

Invincible, one of the top boatbuilders leading the charge in high-performance fishing catamarans, recently added another model to its cat lineup, a 33-footer that tucks easily into private moorings and offers many of the same fishing features and comforts of its heralded larger siblings.

How the Invincible 33 Cat Fishes

With a 10-foot-3-inch beam and designed a clean layout around a single-level deck, fishing room abounds. Generous rod storage includes 47 holders strategically located on the gunwales, transom, leaning post and center console. The 33-footer also features dual 65-gallon livewells: one in-deck in the starboard sponson, and an oval well with a clear acrylic lid on the transom, pressurized and fed from a sea chest with four pumps.

To port of the transom livewell rests a pair of forward-facing drawers ideal for stowing extra tackle, lines and other gear, while four large fish boxes (two forward and two amidships) offer plenty of fish storage, and the pump-out incorporates durable gulper pumps instead of the often-temperamental macerators. To starboard, a transom door provides direct access to the dual integrated swim platforms doubling as outboard brackets.

The foredeck affords nearly 40 square feet of standing room, an elevated perch ideal for netting bait.

Invincible 33 Cat helm

Invincible 33 Cat Amenities

The console seats three at the helm and mezzanine while preserving wide walkways to transit fore and aft. There is ample room inside for a plumbed head, storage, and ready access to systems. A forward-console lounge sits atop a storage box, insulated to keep food or the catch chilled.

The triple helm and mezzanine seating module sits over a sizable, with a tackle center behind the backrest. Drawers, utility-box slots, and tool and leader holders stash a considerable arsenal, organized for access and efficiency.

Invincible 33 Cat bow seating

Handling and Running the Invincible 33

The 33-foot catamaran boat rides smoothly in rough water, is stable at trolling speeds and at anchor, and resists rolling in beam seas thanks to the Morrelli and Melvin “hybrid semi-asymmetrical” hull design that combines the characteristics of symmetrical and asymmetrical sponsons.

Invincible 33 Cat mezzanine seating

On the water, the 33-foot catamaran displayed superb maneuverability and response. With twin Mercury Verado 400s, the Invincible posted a 6.5-second hole shot, took just 11 seconds to reach 30 mph, and hit nearly 62 mph at WOT.

With a maximum power rating of 900 horses, a pair of Mercury Racing 450Rs or Yamaha 425 XTOs make an appealing option for anglers looking for more speed and acceleration.

Invincible 33 Cat Performance

Invincible 33 Cat livewell

With the hybrid hull styles, the Invincible boasts turn-hugging inboard sponson sidewalls and wave-deflecting outboard sidewalls, so it makes sharp turns without heeling. Even in quartering seas, its sponsons hold firm in the slop. The hybrid hull runs great in a chop and with the addition of double steps to break surface tension and release the hull from the water as bubble streams are introduced under the hull, the 33 Cat offers superb performance in a wide range of sea conditions.

Test Conditions

  • Weather : Sunny, 85 degrees
  • Location : Miami
  • Wind : Southeast 12 mph Sea State : Light chop Test Load : Three adults, 50 gallons of fuel, 100 pounds of gear

In some eyes, Invincible Boats’ 37 Cat might have a tough act to follow. Its debut came on the heels of the much-anticipated rollout of Invincible’s first-ever multihull model, the 40 Cat, which I tested for the September/October 2018 issue of Sport Fishing .

But now, as the Invincible crew welcomed me aboard the 37 Cat at Crandon Park Marina on Florida’s Key Biscayne for a summer morning of offshore fishing, one of my first questions was, “Why would a customer choose the 37 instead of the 40?”

“Someone might want a slightly shorter length to fit in a slip or to dock along a canal in back of a home,” said Bill Cordes, Invincible’s director of sales and marketing. “The smaller size also helps when maneuvering in small, crowded marinas.”

Bait Mission We would soon test that theory — the first order of business was to squeeze into a narrow nearby channel to procure live pilchards from a local bait vendor. Equipped with SeaStar Solutions Optimus steering, controlling quad 350 Verado outboards, the 37 handled nicely in the tight confines. We easily sidled up to the stern of the bait boat in a spot where the 40-footer might not have fit. Cordes was right.

Invincible’s Jonathan Lipworth and I helped fend off as Cordes and Zack Howell, also an Invincible staff member, loaded bait. The 26-inch-high gunwales in the aft cockpit made it fairly easy to net the silvery baits from the floating pens. Between the 70-gallon transom livewell and the 72-gallon well below the aft deck, the 37 hosted more than 300 live pilchards, and we were ready for action.

As we headed out, Lipworth explained that the 37 has the same 12-foot beam as the 40, but that the transom design is different. The transom interior is flat, despite the integration of the center livewell, allowing you to more easily work a fish around the outboard engines.

Bluewater Bound With 260 gallons of fuel, pressurized livewells brimming and fish lockers stuffed with ice, the 37 Cat rocketed past Stiltsville and Cape Florida at 52 mph, turning 4,500 rpm, where the four engines burned 55 gallons of fuel per hour, resulting in 0.94 mpg.

A pair of Garmin GPSMap 8617 multifunction displays — one set on sonar, the other on the chart plotter — helped guide the way. The powder-coated aluminum uprights for the hardtop meld gracefully with the center console and serve to frame the thick acrylic windshield and side windows that protect the helm.

This 37 sported a leaning-post-style helm seat with tackle stowage underneath and room for three people, but you can order three-across bucket helm seats with fold-down armrests and flip‑up bolsters.

We were headed to 200 feet of water to kite-fish for mahi and sailfish, and as we passed the shallower patch reefs, waves out of the south began to grow. This is where the design of the Invincible multihull really shines.

Smooth and Natural The Morelli & Melvin-engineered running surface features a semi-asymmetrical cross-sectional design for each sponson. This shape allows the boat to lean inward while cornering. High-speed turns felt natural and comfortable, akin to a V-hull, versus turning flat or leaning outward.

The hull rode very smoothly through seas, with little bow-to-stern rocking motion and hardly any deceleration when meeting the waves, as you might experience with a V-hull. To help soften the water that rushes between the hulls, there’s a pod in between to diffuse the pressure.

We reached our fishing destination near Fowey Light, and deployed a sea anchor on the port side, securing its line to one of the heavy-duty pull-up cleats. We let the kite line out on the starboard side.

The hull laid in the trough, yet proved very stable, owing to its wide stance and twin hulls. The crew used the rigging station with its foldout shelf abaft the helm seating to rig tackle and bridle baits. Invincible has cleverly installed racks for spools of leader line inside the tackle-stowage compartment. A slide-out 105-quart cooler resides below the rigging station.

Space Ship While we waited for a bite, I explored the rest of the boat. The 37 Cat abounds with deck space, offering plenty of room for the crew to fish in the aft cockpit and move fore and aft between the console and gunwales. In addition, like all power cats, this boat carries its wide beam all the way to the bow, and this affords plenty of space forward, including room for a wide coffin box with five rod holders lining each side and a cushion on top. Dividers inside the box let you separate different types of cold goods.

A seat for two on the forward console gives crewmembers a place to take a load off. A companionway on the port side of the console offers access to the interior, where I stowed my camera gear.

Commotion in the aft cockpit drew my attention from the boat tour. A sailfish had attacked the bridled pilchard on the long kite line, and Cordes was up first. He wound the reel quickly to tighten the line, free it from the release clip and then secure the circle hook in the corner of the sail’s mouth.

As Cordes fought the fish, I noted the thick coaming pads that encircle the interior of the 37, cushioning his legs no matter where he followed the fish. The boat’s stability made it safe and comfortable to battle the fish from the bow as well as the stern. This sail was tough, staging a longer fight on the light tackle than we all expected and adding a few aerial flourishes to the mix. But eventually, Cordes coaxed the beautiful fish boatside, where Howell leadered it and removed the hook for a successful release.

Mutton, Honey We set the kite lines back out, but this time decided to fish an additional pilchard on a bottom rig as we drifted into shallower water. That turned out to be a smart decision. About 15 minutes into our drift, the rod bent double. Howell picked it up and fought the fish, which turned out to be a brightly colored mutton snapper.

On that successful note, our time offshore had come to an end. We headed in to the smooth waters of Biscayne Bay to gather performance data on the 37 Cat. Turning Mercury Revolution4 23-inch-pitch, four-blade stainless-steel propellers, the quad Merc 350 Verados powered the Invincible to plane in 4 seconds and 30 mph in 7 seconds from dead idle. We achieved a remarkable top speed of 74.1 mph at 6,500 rpm, burning 141 gallons per hour for 0.52 mpg.

Since this test, Invincible has changed the engine height and installed Rev4 24-inch-pitch pro-finished props. This helped the 37 Cat record a top speed of 77 mph at 6,350 rpm in subsequent tests, where the engines burned 122 gph for 0.63 mpg, according to Invincible.

Our best fuel efficiency occurred at 3,500 rpm and 37 mph, where the engines consumed 35.1 gph for 1.05 mpg. However, fuel efficiency at 4,000 rpm and 44 mph was nearly identical. During Invincible’s testing, the 37 Cat achieved it highest efficiency at 4,000 rpm and 45 mph, where the Mercs burned 42 gph for 1.07 mph. At any of these speeds, expect a cruising range in excess of 500 miles based on the 550-gallon fuel capacity.

Ultimately, the 37 Cat gives up little to its larger sister ship. The 37’s seakeeping ability is excellent. Yes, it’s a tad shorter than its sibling, but in some cases, that can be an advantage, especially when you need to squeeze into a narrow channel to load the livewells with bait.

The 40 Cat has plenty of room to keep fish: two fish boxes below the aft cockpit — 268 gallons to starboard and 414 gallons to port — and two 158-gallon boxes forward.
