Herreshoff 30 Square Meter Sailboat
- Price: Contact seller
- Make: Herreshoff
- Model: 30 Square Meter
- Type: Racer
- Location: Greenport, New York, United States
Description
Historical Significance
Oriole II was one of the first American designed and built thirty-square meters to race competitively in international competition. She was designed in 1930 by the famous yacht designer Lewis Francis Herreshoff for Elizabeth ‘Sis’ Hovey. Driving ORIOLE, Miss Hovey would become the first woman to race and win an international sailing event. Her purpose was simple, to race in Kiel, Germany and Sandhamn, Sweden to recapture the Marblehead and Hoover Cups in 1930, both lost the prior year to the Swedes.
While the American’s lost both regettas, Herreshoff relayed, ‘we had only one new boat on the team, the Oriole II, sailed by Miss Hovey, and it is said she proved to be nearly as fast as the best German or Swedish boat in this class.’
Oriole II stayed in the Marblehead area for many years after Hovey sold her in 1934, placing respectably in capable hands against larger Swedish-built boats. By 1994, she had been acquired by the Museum of Yachting in Newport, Rhode Island. The Museum completed a full restoration of the yacht before adding it to their collection. The boat was acquired by her current owner in 2006.
Later recalling ORIOLE II, Sis Hovey wrote, ‘To me there is no boat as enjoyable to sail or as enjoyable to look at as a 30 square metre. They are easy to handle, lovely to the touch, as fast as a scared rabbit. I’ve raced many different kinds of boats since (ORIOLE II); from J-boats, YANKEE and RAINBOW, 12 metres EASTERN and WEATHERLY, down to 210s and 110s and everything in between, and to me there is nothing to compare to ORIOLE. Correspondence with George Fisher
L. Francis Herreshoff
ORIOLE II was designed by L. Francis Herreshoff, the first major proponent for the thirty-square meters in the United States. In an article printed in 1931, he stated, ‘It is safe to say that they (thirty-square meters) are the most modernistic-looking type we have, with their long fine ends and high, narrow sails. They are in their element in a strong wind and rough sea when they make really phenomenal speed for their sail area. In the races abroad, when there is any wind, they easily overtake and pass the Six-Metre boats.’
One of the most influential and successful yacht designers of the twentieth century, L. Francis Herreshoff, worked for: his father, Capt. Nat Herreshoff; the U.S. Navy in World War I; and for Starling Burgess, before going out on his own. L. Francis was also a prolific writer and, in addition to numerous articles, he authored The Common Sense of Yacht Design, The Compleat Cruiser, Sensible Cruising Designs, An L. Francis Herreshoff Reader, and a biography of his father, Capt. Nat Herreshoff: The Wizard of Bristol. Herreshoff's writing influenced generations of designers and builders.
Specifications
Beam: 6’9’’
Draft 4’9’’
Displacement: 5,557 lbs
Oriole is a 30 square metre racing yacht designed by one of the world’s greatest yacht designers and built by one of the finest boat builder’s in the world. She is an open cockpit racer, with a dramatic swept-back mast, small jib sail and very large main sail. She has a full keel, with lead ballast. The decks are done in canvas and epoxy.
The bottom of Oriole is a white oak keel with lead ballast attached by bronze bolts. The caravel planking of the hull is mahogany. The planking is attached to white oak frames that are 1 “x 1” sided and approximately 6 ½’on center. The planking is fastened by # 6 copper rivet, and 3/16” bronze wood screws, virtually all the fasteners have been replaced in the past 12 years.
The mast appears to be made of Sitka Spruce, and made as a box section tapering of to a to a round section at the top. The mast is a ¾ fractional mast that has about a 1’ bend as well as a lot of rake to it.
Sail Inventory: 2012 Quantum Dacron sails. 150% genoa, 100% jib; main. Used less than 20 times and in excellent condition.
Contact for inspection. No survey is available.
In a letter that appeared in Wooden Boat Magazine (WB-114), Sis Hovey described Herreshoff’s many innovations on ORIOLE II, ‘….he actually invented the roller-reefing gear, ventilated spinnaker, and Genoa jib – which were used for the first time on ORIOLE II when I took her to Kiel, Germany, and afterward in Sweden for team racing in 1930. Our jib was then known as the biggest biggest, and was copied in Italy and was called the Genoa jib. This bothered Francis, and I’m not surprised.’
Oriole II’s first, and most prominent, owner was Elizabeth ‘Sis’ Hovey, an early pioneer of women’s yachting who grew up racing in Massachusetts. In the thirties, the family name Hovey was widely associated with yachting and America's Cup history. Father Chandler Hovey was involved in the J Class and joined the Bostonians John Lawrence and Charles Francis Adam in the 1930 Cup defence with Yankee. Chandler passed on his passion to his two sons, Charles and Chandler Junior, as well as to his daughter Elisabeth, nicknamed "Sis".
While the Americans were romped in the 1929 Hoover Cup and Marblehead Cup, Herreshoff noted that a bright spot for the Americans in this series was that Sis Hovey, driving ORIOLE, became the first American to skipper a boat in international competition. Sailing ORIOLE, she placed respectably, edging out the Germans for the first place in the final race in Kiel, Germany.
‘One of the things that rather surprised the foreigners was that a very young lady (‘Sis’ Hovey) sailed one of our boats and, in fact, made the greatest number of points on our team.’ L. Francis Herreshoff
‘This year a return race was sailed in Germany and our team again was beaten. However, we had only one new boat on the team, the ORIOLE II, sailed by Miss Hovey, and it is said she proved to be nearly as fast as the best German or Swedish boat in this class.’ L. Francis Herreshoff
Of ORIOLE II, Sis Hovey would later write, ‘Of all the boats I was lucky to sail, including J-boats, Herreshoff 12s, M-boats, Rs, Qs, and others, my 30-square meter was the most fun.’ Wooden Boat Magazine (WB-114)
Correspondence
Copies of correspondence regarding ORIOLE written by Sis Hovey to George Fisher.
I once had the pleasure of storing my boat next to one of the square meter yachts designed and built in the United States. This was the L. Francis Herreshoff designed Oriole. Sighting down the length of her underbody was an experience to take your breath away. A vessel of this general type, with a fin keel and a bulb at the bottom could carry substantially more sail area than the old square meter rule would allow. Such a boat would fly.
Oriole is an ideal example how deceptive it is to judge size by overall length. She’s s bit under 40 feet from stem to stern; however, she displaces only 5,500 pounds – talk about a low displacement-to-length ration!...Of course, in return for this, Oriole has been reliably clocked at 12 knots – now that’s sailing!

1985 Classic 30 Square Meter
- Description
Seller's Description
This is a 30 Square Meter sailboat originally 1932 design but built in the year 1985 as a replica in Sausalito with a fiberglass hull and aluminum spars.
There are 3 headsails including a brand new North roller furling jib. There is a full-size asymmetrical reacher that has been used sparingly. The roller furling is also brand new.
She also has an electric saildrive for power that is efficient and quiet. There are 4 batteries, lifejackets, flag, and other misc. parts that go with the boat.
The Square Meter evolved from a Swedish Sailing Federation Committee to design a yacht racing class that developed very simple boats that were fast racing machines of the day. Over time the sailing committee created the Square Meter Rule: yachts were to be classed by their sail area which was fixed and the race class or the 30 square-meter was born and very popular in the 1920 and ’30s.
She is easily sailed single-handed for weekend sails or regattas and can be handled with minimal crew. The boat has a small cuddy cabin that can be used for short cruises and has a marine toilet.
Own not only a gorgeous sailing classic but one that quickly glides through the water with ease. She is located in San Diego and was used by the seller as a daily sailer.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Selected by Duetscher Segler Vergand in a competition held in 1931. Sailed in the Melborne Olympic Games of 1956. (The gold medal in this event was won by noted Australian sailor, Rolly Tasker). Still raced in a number of fleets around the world (in some cases as variants of the original). In the UK it is the BRITISH SHARPIE or NORFOLK SHARPIE. In Australia called the HEAVYWEIGHT SHARPIE, and beginning in 1960, a modernized version called the AUSTRALIAN LIGHTWEIGHT SHARPIE.

Description
Gerd VI is one of the most extreme SK30 Squaremetres ever conceived by the famous naval architect and squaremetre expert Harry Becker. After a colorful life, Gerd VI received a comprehensive restoration under guidance of a professional classic yacht surveyor and the Swedish naval architect Peter Norlin. In collaboration with the Swedish Squaremetre Association Gerd VI was restored to be the very fast racing SK30 she was designed as and her racing records within the class can´t be a better proof of this successful cooperation. Besides of the structural and cosmetical improvements, Gerd VI now sports a custom designed aluminum mast with PBO rigging and modern laminated sails. Her stunning Harry Becker lines and the fact that this little treasure is in a better than new condition make this offer a unique chance to acquire a competitive and very rare Squaremetre.

30 Square Metre
There is no mistaking the graceful lines of a 30 square metre. with its long, lean hull, generous overhangs and lofty, slim-line bermudan rig, it is arguably one of the world’s most striking classes, and certainly one that commands immediate attention on the water..
“Of all the fast cruisers, the 30 Square Metres are probably the best,” wrote Uffa Fox in the 1930s. “The Skerry Cruisers with their liveliness and buoyant hulls are a type that appeal to many people… for their rules produce a fast type of craft that gives a great deal of pleasure to those sailing it, and also at the same time they produce a very sturdy little vessel, one that is both strong and seaworthy.”
Fox was a tremendous advocate of the Square Metre classes, or Skärgårdskryssare (Skerry Cruisers) as they are known in their native Scandinavia, and campaigned hard for them to be introduced to British waters. It was not until 1937 that the first one sailed on the Solent, by which time they were already well established in Sweden and the Baltic as both cruisers and racers.
The class, along with the 22, 45 and 55 Square Metre classes, was conceived in 1908 after the Square Metre Rule was adopted by the Royal Swedish YC. The rule, which was simply based on the sail area in square metres, allowed huge flexibility in the hull and rig design. Early 30s reflected the style of that era, but it wasn’t long before designers experimented with longer, more extreme overhangs, increasing the waterline length of the hull when heeled over and consequently its speed.
Interestingly, one reason for the 30’s relatively modest sail area is that, unlike many of its predecessors, it was launched specifically for amateur crews. Many of the yachts designed in Sweden in the late 1800s were crewed by professional sailors, but in a move away from this, the rules specified that the Skerry Cruisers should be sailed by their owners and have a rig that was manageable by relative novices.
Of the Swedish-built boats, most were planked up in Swedish red pine or Honduras mahogany on steam-bent American or European white oak frames. Owing to the often extreme climatic conditions of Scandinavia, top quality timber was essential for the close-seamed hulls, and was well-seasoned prior to use to ensure longevity. Red or Oregon pine was used for the decks.
Their stability and good performance in strong winds and big seas soon proved them a viable class in Sweden, and before long interest had spread to other countries, including Finland, Germany, France, Brazil, Switzerland and America.
In Britain, their long, narrow hulls and vertiginous rigs were so different from other boats that many sailors were reluctant to invest in them. However, by 1938, 18 were racing on the Solent. Sadly, interest was to be short-lived, and in 1947 what remained of the Solent fleet raced together for the last time.
Since then interest has been sporadic, as many of the boats were shipped to South Africa. In Scandinavia, however, the class remains very active, and in 2008, 45 took part in the Square Metre Jubilee Regatta at Saltsjöbaden in Sweden.
Lottery prize
To foster enthusiasm for the 30 Square Metre class, the Royal Swedish YC used to commission one to be designed and built each year as a lottery prize.
Blondie’s 30
Lt Col HG ‘Blondie’ Hasler owned the 30 Square Metre Tre Sang in 1946. He used her extensively that season for offshore racing, and despite often horrendous conditions won three out of six races and sailed over 2,600 nautical miles. In doing so, Hasler helped overturn the rule books’ claim that you needed heavyweight, deep-keeled boats for offshore racing and helped inspire a new generation of light-displacement offshore racers.
WaterWitch 48
The Knud Reimers-designed 30 Square Metre WaterWitch , built by Uffa Fox in 1937, has inspired a new class to be built in New York. Scalett O’hara Specifications:
LOA: 12.70m * LWL: 9.5m * Beam: 2.23m * Draught: 1.48m * Displacement: 2.72tonnes
Historical:
Jonas Brundin is the Swede who came to Australia in 1992 as a business migrant bringing with him the plug for the 30-square-metre yachts, a Harry Becker design. He joined up with Garth Stewart and John Taylor with the view of building 30-square-metre yachts in Australia.
The three fibreglass 30-square-metre yachts were launched in 1993.
Pinchgut and Business Class (originally SAS Business Class) were built at Boatspeed in Gosford (which has since gone bust). They have a hand- laid foam-sandwich hull and deck.
The original Swedish hull which acted as the plug for the Australian mould was sold to Ross Wilson in Lake Macquarie. Ross named it Wisper. In 1994 Robert Skol purchased it from Ross, sailed it back to Sydney Harbour and re-named it Scarlett O’Hara.
The Australian mould was kept at John Taylor’s factory in Rouse Hill, but unfortunately, since John passed away nobody knows what became of the mould.
Scarlett O’Hara has had, and continues to have a very active presence on Sydney Harbour. She sails in multiple clubs and attends almost every big event on the water. The passion in her name describes her well as she is often flaunting her good looks with an invigorating experience for her crew.

Years of Bliss & The Best of ASQMA...
is Still to Come !
The 5 th Year Anniversary! The Legend is alive and continues. ~
Amazing reunions made, old friendships re-established, 30 SQM Yachts found, restored and returning to the waters renewed, varnish and paints sparkling, fittings sparkling, stories aplenty and as eye-catching as ever.
It has been an amazing half a decade for myself and the proud, passionate and dedicated owners (trustees) of the Australian Square Metre Yachts since this website was born in July 2010.
The contagious fascination with this yacht design creates a stir with yachties and people alike all over the world.
We would like to thank all of those people who have contributed to this website up to this day and we look forward to much more for the next year.
A very special ‘Thank You’ I sincerely like to express to Cameron Wiklund (ex Wings ) for his friendship and forensic (archive), creative, humorous and most of all passionate input as previous Acting President and Website Editor. We are very glad to state, that after Wings has chosen a new trustee, he is still sailing on Rob Skol’s Scarlet O’Hara escaping (temporarily) the plastic offshore yachts.
The website has surpassed 250,000 hits. We believe a rework website (in process) will contribute to the beauty of our ASQM Yachts. Many updates applied to the individual yacht profiles are in this very process. Be encouraged to visit these pages.
The next sailing season approaches steadfast. We look forward to your latest photos, stories, updates and news of your beauties sent to:
We trust you enjoy the website and look forward to another sensational year of everything and anything to do with Square Metre Yachts.
Perth, July 2014
